Animal Samaritans’ 10th Annual Men of the Desert Fashion Show & Charity Luncheon Raises $170,000 To Fund Its Animal Rescue Program By Madeline Zuckerman It was a Who’s Who of the Coachella Valley, as over 450 guests turned out for a day of fun to celebrate a decade of handsome Dudes, Dogs, and Designer Men’s Fashions. This year’s 10th Annual “MEN OF THE DESERT” Fashion Show & Charity Luncheon was billed at the most successful

It Was a Good Theatrical Year for Some Theatres in Southern California By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Once again, it’s that time for recapping live theatrical productions of the Coachella Valley as the curtain of the ‘teen decade’ decends. Who knows what the decade of the ‘20s will bring to our desert audiences. After all, theatre productions, as well as our culture and our society, are constantly evolving both in subject matter, style, and in their
technical skills presentations. We leave the awarding of individual performances from our many talented performers and the creative technical teams who support them to the Desert Theatre League (DTL) to pass out trophies. However, it’s a time-honored tradition in the world of theatre that journalists, reviewers, and critics also get the opportunity to chime in with their opinions, which may or may not reflect DTL’s honorees. How the Secure Act will impact Retirement Planning
By Janice Gough The Secure Act signed into law on Dec. 20th by President Trump is the most significant legislation to bolster America’s retirement system in more than a decade. Notably, small businesses will be able to provide better plans to enable employees to save more money- more efficiently. Management fees and compliance for 401K plans made them the wrong choice for small employers in the past. It will now be more comfortable for small businesses to set up 401(k) s by increasing the cap under

which they can automatically enroll workers in “safe harbor” retirement plans is increased from 10% of wages to 15%. As an incentive to small business owners, a maximum tax credit of $500 per year will be provided to employers who create a 401(k) or SIMPLE IRA plan with automatic enrollment. Businesses can now enroll part-time employees who work either 1,000 hours throughout the year or have three consecutive years with 500 hours of service. Annuities can be offered as an investment option for employees. For those who desire safety in their plan, Annuities have guarantees and offer guaranteed income riders, such as a 7% guarantee rollup credit, each year for 10 years. Another benefit offered by annuities
is lifetime income payouts. Another change is the age at which retirement plan participants need to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) is changed from 70½ to 72. MEPs are Multiple Employer Plans, and small employers can join an MEP. The Secure Act will offer a more natural solution among smaller employers. More American workers will have access to qualified, workplace retirement plans through the expansion of open MEPs. These plans will have an enhanced ability to provide valuable retirement benefits and additional plan features. MEPs will still be subject to nondiscrimination testing. Through open MEPs and their cost-efficient institutional investment options and lower administrative costs,
American workers with employers of all sizes and industries will reap the added value of these savings. Among a host of sweeping retirement planning changes, the new law also allows tax-free 529 college savings plan distributions to be used to pay for registered apprenticeship programs and up to $10,000 in student loan payments. Over 30 states offer an additional state income tax deduction or income tax credit for 529 plan contributions. The Secure Act “expands access to retirement plans for millions of Americans and allows older workers to contribute more to their IRAs. It also makes it easier for small businesses to band together to provide retirement plans for employees – leading to at least 700,000 new savers.
Passage of Secure can help pave the way for bolder reforms in the enactment of the Retirement Security and Savings Act, which constitutes a broader set of reforms. Fifty-Seven specific provisions will be considered next year. As your retirement needs evolve, we look forward to working with our clients by providing solutions to help position you to achieve financial security in retirement. New Year Resolutions for HOA Members
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL [Second in a four-part series, with possible resolutions for the HOA owner. Next week’s installment will suggest ideas for managers.] I, the HOA member, resolve to:
NUMBER ONE: 1. Follow the Golden Rule. (paraphrase: “Treat others as you would like to be treated”) MY ATTITUDE: 2. Not refer to the HOA or board as “they,” since it is all “us.” The directors are also members who pay assessments and spend their time working to benefit us all. 3. Be neighborly, because shared ownership fails without cooperation. 4. Assume our directors are doing their best as volunteers, and give them the benefit of the doubt. 5. Not first assume the board is incompetent or dishonest when I believe it is overspending. 6. Avoid the “my home, my castle” attitude. We share the benefits of common interest ownership, which means we also agree to share control of our property. 7. Ask questions before making statements, criticizing, or even accusing others. 8. Acknowledge the board may have more information than me. This doesn’t mean the board is always right, but it does mean my opinion might not be fully informed. 9. Take the long view of our association property,
supporting growth of our capital reserve fund and maintaining our buildings. BE KNOWLEDGEABLE: 10. Read the information the HOA sends to me. 11. Be familiar with the CC&R’s, bylaws, and rules. I will be a better neighbor by understanding the use restrictions and rules. 12. Read the association budget and reserve study. I will ask informed questions, particularly about deviations from budget. 13. If I ask to review financial documents, I will not ask for “everything,” and request only documents which I really need, acknowledging my manager is not a librarian. HELP BOARD MEETINGS: 14. Insist the board follow our transparency laws, and only handle in closed session the limited items allowed by law. I will also help to contribute to orderly meetings. 15. Review the posted agenda before attending board meetings. 16. Organize my open January 1, 2020
forum remarks, and accept that the board may not immediately have answers or responses to my questions or suggestions 17. I will use my open forum time to inform the board, not to argue with them, and after open forum I will not interrupt board deliberations. 18. Encourage others attending board meetings to behave with decorum and respect, as we are all neighbors. HELPING: 19. Join a committee, helping share the load of operating our HOA. 20. If I disagree with the board, I will first provide suggestions and information before criticizing. COMMUNITY BUILDING 21. Find ways to enhance our community’s image. 22. Try to resolve disputes with a neighbor or the association before “going legal.” Legal disputes can fracture relationships for years. Neighborhood resolution is almost always more effective than lawyer action and court orders.
23. Participate in all member votes, even if only by mailing in my ballot. 24. Join a Community Associations Institute chapter, and suggest our HOA encourage directors also to be educated members and hire credentialed managers. 25. Frequently find opportunities to thank our directors, committees, and manager for their service to the community. 26. Vote for directors who demonstrate an attitude of service and commitment to do things the right way. LASTLY: 27. Follow the Golden Rule. Kelly G. 5 Tips to Ace College Entry Exams
By Desert Star Staff Because most colleges and universities require applicants to submit ACT or SAT results as part of admissions consideration, prepping for the test itself can be a critical component of that process. While it can oftentimes be hard to deal with the anxiety that comes with a rigorous test meant to show your mastery of certain subjects and concepts, such as reading and mathematics, consider these test prep tips to help boost your score while simultaneously lowering stress. Register Early: To allow yourself as much flexibility as possible, taking college entrance exams during your junior year of high school is encouraged. If you don’t get an ideal score, you can refine your approach and retake the exam with a better idea of what to expect. Take a Practice Test: Any test prep plan should start with a practice SAT or
ACT exam. Taking practice tests under realistic conditions can help you gain a better understanding of the content of the test, improve your time management and help combat test anxiety. You can use your practice test as a baseline to set goals and focus the rest of your prep on areas you would like to improve before the real thing. Sign Up for a Prep Course: If you find studying on your own difficult or not as successful as you’d hoped, a prep course can put you through the paces and hold you accountable. Complete with homework and in-class practice, prep classes can range from small groups to larger classes taught by test experts. Some school districts even offer afterschool programs dedicated to ACT or SAT prep.
Gather Supplies: To help reduce test day stress, gather everything you’ll need the night before. Check the list of banned items – cellphones
Photo courtesy of Getty Images aren’t permitted – to make sure you don’t accidentally bring something you’re not allowed to have. Ensure your bag is packed with your admission ticket, valid photo identification, several sharpened pencils with erasers, an approved calculator (with fresh batteries) and a watch, if allowed.
Get a Good Night’s: Sleep and Eat Breakfast While it can be tempting to stay up late the night before the test to cram, you’re likely to perform better with a full night’s sleep. Sleep is important for retention, and eating a balanced breakfast before heading out the door can aid in your ability to focus.
To make your morning easier, prep breakfast before bed to keep an early morning from starting even earlier. Remember, the college admissions process involves more than just test scores. Visit eLivingtoday.com for more education tips and information. Source: (eLivingtoday.com)
AARP Poll: 95% Women 50+ Likely to Vote in 2020
In a new poll sponsored by AARP, more than half of older women voters said they had an unfavorable view of national leadership. (Jessica Whittle Photography/Creative Commons) By Desert Star Staff CONCORD, N.H. According to a new Harris poll sponsored by AARP, 95%
of women 50 and older say they’re likely to vote in the 2020 presidential election. While older women are
expected to be a reliable voting bloc, 7 out of 10 say they still don’t know who they’re going to vote for. AARP New
Hampshire state director Todd Fahey reflected on the significance of this uncertainty for the Granite State. “In a state like New Hampshire with a first-inthe-nation primary, with some 40-plus percent of the population declared independents, it’s a pretty important number,” Fahey said. The women polled also said they prefer an experienced candidate over one with a new approach. According to the survey, the top issue for older women voters is health care, particularly its high cost. Fahey explained how the high price of health care impacts older women. “Most of them continue to struggle with the cost of health care,” he said. “Three in 10 have had to skip medical care because it was too expensive;
4 in 10 can’t afford to pay for their health care, and 7 in 10 feel that older people pay too much for health care comparison to others.” The respondents are also more likely than the male respondents to say the economy is on the wrong track and isn’t working for them. Other high priorities among older women voters include the opioid epidemic, prices rising faster than income, college affordability and the future of Social Security. The poll was conducted online in November and surveyed close to 2,000 women across the country. CA Law to Improve Conditions for Farm Animals Takes Effect
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A new California law to improve living conditions for certain farm animals goes into effect Wednesday - and it is expected to have ripple effects on the way animals are treated across the country. Proposition 12 increases the space a pig must have to 24 square feet by 2022. Josh Balk, vice president for farm animal protection with the Humane Society, says the gestation crates in wide use now are barbaric. “These are cages barely larger than their own body,” says Balk. “They’re basically forced to live in a coffin for roughly four years. You know, if this was done to a dog or a cat, we’d be arrested for felony cruelty charges. “ Starting Wednesday, veal calves must be given
43 square feet and hens must be given one square foot of space each. The law mandates a cage-free environment by the end of 2021 - and it affects other states because the measure bans the sale of animal products in California that don’t meet these standards. Amber Canavan, senior campaigner with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, says the new law doesn’t go far enough because female chicks can still have their beaks cut off, and male chickens can still be gassed to death. She recommends that consumers vote with their pocketbooks by going vegan. “We found that consumers can’t trust any label that says ‘humane,’ ‘cage-free,’ ‘free range,’” says Canavan. “And the
Chickens are commonly kept in battery cages about the size of a large microwave that fits six to eight birds. (Colony Cages) safest thing for consumers to do is to avoid products that come from animals entirely.” The National Pork Producers Council and the
American Farm Bureau Federation have filed a legal challenge, saying the law will hurt small family farms that can’t afford to convert
their facilities. A judge recently dismissed a similar challenge by the North American Meat Institute.
Colorado’s Wild Animal Sanctuary Rescues a Record 204 Animals in 2019
By Desert Star Staff KEENESBURG, Colo., -- Capping off a year with an already record number of
animals rescued from abuse home on December 29 from and neglect, an additional three a failed facility in Texas. tigers and two black bears Bringing the total number arrived at their new Colorado of animals rescued by The
Wild Animal Sanctuary in 2019 to 204, the five new residents can look forward to a life free from human exploitation while living in large, natural habitats. For the bears that means a life of roaming free with other rescued bears on 250 acres of forested land at the Sanctuary’s secondary location, The Wild Animal Refuge, in southern Colorado. Of note were 24 animals rescued from a roadside zoo in Virginia in August, including three tigers, two lions and two Asiatic Black Bears; 16 animals from the Wildlife Waystation in California, including 10 bears and three hyenas; a total of 13 bears from two zoos in Argentina, three of which are rare Spectacled Bears. The largest rescue took place in January when 131 animals were removed from a dire hoarding situation in Ordway,
Colorado. In all, a total of 31 bears of various species were given a new lease on life by the Sanctuary, with most of them being rehomed at the Refuge. “Naturally, we are thrilled that we could save so many animals and give them the best life possible; it is why the Sanctuary exists and what has kept the staff and volunteers going for 40 years,” stated executive director, Pat Craig. “We are also ever grateful to our wonderful supporters who make our work possible and all of us look forward to the coming year so we can change even more animals’ lives for the better,” he added. Do you really, really want a dog?!
By Desert Star Staff Do you really want a dog? Do you want to wake up early on a cozy Sunday morning, and take him out in the rain? After all, he needs his exercise. Are you ready to spend as much time as you can with him? Are you prepared for the lifestyle impact, the financial impact, and grooming considerations? Hmmm… Are you up for cleaning up various messes? Getting up in the middle of the night with a sick dog? Whether it’s a puppy, adult, or senior dog you’re considering adopting, the newness soon wears off, and then you’re left with a loving companion for, hopefully, many years to come. The overwhelming majority of dogs adopted from shelters aren’t puppies. In fact, most are 2-3 years old and up. So in this section, we’ll concentrate primarily on an adult to older dogs and their particular needs. However, if you’re looking to adopt a puppy
from a shelter, much of this information will still be beneficial. And for more information specific to puppies, please visit the puppy section of the site. Anywhere you go, you’ll find lots of shelter dogs in need of a right home. There are other benefits to adopting from a shelter. With a shelter adoption, you’re saving more than one life - you’re making room for another dog or allowing another dog to be kept at a shelter for a more extended period, giving them a better chance of being adopted, too. Another rewarding aspect of shelter adoption is the special bond many owners develop with their rescued dog. Opening up your heart and home to an “orphan” usually results in a stable relationship. That can mean a loyal, affectionate, and attentive dog for life. Read on to “check” that your decision to adopt is a solid one. Why do you want a dog? In deciding what type of dog

Time of your life For a dog waiting for his “forever” home, it’s always a good time to be adopted. But don’t let him down by bringing him home, and then deciding that it’s simply not the right time for you. The biggest trick is to stay healthy and happy.
Almost every book on dog breeds will give an indication of exercise requirements. As long as you hit the pavement and the park enough, your big dog will likely be happy lounging around your home. In fact, many small breeds (for example, Jack Russell Terriers) require more activity than large breeds. It’s all about activity needs As long as you take care of his exercise needs, the size of your home really doesn’t matter - whether you’re a city, suburb, or country-dweller. Of course, an off-leash park in a town is always great no matter where you reside. Areas designated for offleash dogs give your dog the chance to romp around as much as he likes, play with other dogs, and fetch toys like Frisbees, Kongs, and tennis balls. Of course, these parks are only for trained, socialized, friendly dogs. Additionally, dogs don’t need a yard to thrive. In fact, they may soon get bored hanging out in the backyard. Yards smell the same every day, and there aren’t any new and stimulating experiences. It’s much more fun and interesting to dogs to go out for walks (especially if you change your routes), or to dog parks, with you. This way, they’ll meet other people and dogs, and be excited by new environments. Male or female does it matter? Consider whether you want a male or female dog. Males tend to be more dominant and self-confident, whereas females may be more affectionate and homeloving. But, of course, these are vast generalizations; every dog is different.

By Desert Star Staff Many families look to the new year as a time to reset their eating habits and focus on making healthier choices. However, adults aren’t the only ones who could use a menu refresh as children may also need to focus on healthier food choices. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed children consume an unhealthy amount of added sugar every day. Researchers found nearly all of the toddlers in their study ate an average of 7 teaspoons of added sugar daily – the equivalent of a candy bar. Additionally, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, excess sugar consumption can lead to an increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. “Small children have small stomachs,” said Courtney Hines, a nutritionist for KinderCare Learning Centers, which care for more than 165,000 children around the country every day. “You want them to fill up on nutrient-dense foods, not empty calories in the form of added sugar. When children consume lots of sugar, their palates get used to overly sweet flavors. They may not accept other, less sugary flavors or learn to appreciate the natural sweetness of a piece of fresh fruit.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against the consumption of added sugar for children under the age of 2. Children ages 2-18 should aim for less than 25 grams, or 6 teaspoons, of added sugar per day. For families that want to cut down on the amount of added sugar in their diets, Hines recommends cooking more at home, relying less on processed, packaged foods and serving only water or milk for beverages. Consider these low-sugar ideas for meal and snack times to help control the amount of added sugar you and your family consume.
Dip Smart: Herbs, spices, citrus and fresh fruit add flavor without relying on the added sugars found in many popular sauces and dips. Consider making your own low-sugar alternatives at home so your family can still enjoy favorite flavors like these: • Ranch Dressing – In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, buttermilk, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper for a kid-tested, nutritionist-approved take on a favorite dip. Serve over salad or as vegetable dip. • Honey Mustard – Popular on a variety of sandwiches and as a dip or
salad dressing, combining plain yogurt with milk, honey and regular or Dijon mustard can create a more family-friendly version. • Teriyaki Sauce – Perfect for serving with healthier options like lo mein, chicken wraps or fried rice, a homemade version can be created using water, soy sauce, honey, ginger, garlic powder and cornstarch slurry. Swap Out Syrup: Pancakes are a popular breakfast option at KinderCare centers and in many homes, but even the healthiest whole-grain pancake becomes a plateful of sugar
if it’s doused in syrup. Hines recommends these toppings that are sweet and savory without the added sugar: • Nut butter or seed butter (such as peanut, almond or sun) and banana slices • Warm fruit compote (mix of warmed berries) • Applesauce (no-sugaradded variety) and cinnamon • Nut butter swirled into plain yogurt; mix in 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract to add a sweet flavor Snack Sweet: Opting for less added sugar doesn’t mean avoiding sweet snacks altogether. These alternatives can still help
satisfy those cravings: • Applesauce with baked cinnamon pita triangles for dipping • Toast topped with nut or seed butter, smashed banana and sprinkle of cinnamon • Frozen fruit smoothies • Plain yogurt topped with granola, nuts, seeds or fruit • Apple slices with nut or seed butter For more ideas to introduce your children to healthy habits from a young age, visit kindercare. com. particular ranking or order of outstanding and memorable productions that impressed me in 2019. Coyote StageWorks, of Palm Springs, produced the rip-roarin’ musical comedy “Honky Tonk Laundry” that starred Bets Malone and Misty Cotton; CVREP of Cathedral City, scored with its production of the musical “CHESS,” and CVREP’s excellent’s “Good People”; Dezart Performs, of Palm Springs also scored with two of their productions: “Maytag Virgin” with Joel Bryant and Kay Capasso, in star turns and “Hand to God” with a stunning performance by Eddie Vona as puppet-master Jason and his “X” rated puppet creation Tyrone; Desert Rose Playhouse of Rancho Mirage, starred our desert’s National Treasure actress and director extraordinaire, Judith Chapman as Tallulah Bankhead in “Looped.” Their production “Ruthless,” directed by Loren Freeman, was a campy-hoot and crowd-pleaser that starred theatre artistic director www.desertstarweekly.com
Robbie Wayne, in a role he was born to play. Desert Theatreworks’ production of “12 Angry Men, “ directed by Michael Pacas, was taut and intensely performed by his cast. Also memorable was “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” directed by Rebecca Havely. The Palm Canyon Theatre, of Palm Springs, produced several musical productions but excelled in “The King and I” that sparkled throughout under the wonderful staging and costume designs of Derik Shopinski and the singing of Se Layne as Anna, the English tutor to the King of Siam’s children. The haunting Palm Canyon Theatre production of The “Diary of Anne Frank,” lovingly directed by Dr. William Layne, and a cast of inspired performers was especially memorable. Fine work was performed by many in the Coachella Valley, but the above-listed productions really stood out for me in 2019. I also review many theatre venues outside of our Valley, which one can read every Wednesday in issues of the Desert Star Weekly. It’s my way of alerting our desert
residents that if you travel to cities in Southern California, such as San Diego, Solana Beach, La Jolla, Los Angeles, or Pasadena, there are always theatre productions worth your time and money. In 2019, LA theatres produced a boat-load of plays. Some revivals of musicals, road shows and touring companies, comedies and drama’, and of course new originals, hoping to hit the jackpot with a Broadway theatre willing to produce it. The most recent outstanding LA production I reviewed in December was Matthew Bourne’s sensational, reimagined Tchaikovsky ballet production “Swan Lake”; still on stage at the Ahmanson Theatre for its limited run in LA. Last summer’s triumphant revival of “Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward, at the 70-year-old Westchester Playhouse, was lovingly and creatively directed by Coward expert Gail Bernardi who pleased sold-out audiences during its six-week run. The Old Globe Theatre of San Diego is a longtime favorite venue of mine. They have been staging plays since January 1, 2020
1935. This 2019 season The Old Globe staged two outstanding and impressive productions: “Romeo and Juliet,” a brilliant, moderndress reimagining by The Old Globe’s Erna Finci Viterbi artistic director Barry Edelstein, who staged it in the Outdoor Festival Theatre. Also memorable was the Old Globe’s musical production of “Almost Famous,” based San Diego’s native son Cameron Crowe, on the Globe’s Shiley main stage venue. San Diego Rep Theatre, located in Horton Plaza, produced a stunning production of Lucas Hnath’s imagined sequel based on Henrik Ibsen’s iconic ground-breaking drama “A Doll’s House” titled “A Doll’s House, Part 2”, directed by Sam Woodhouse, that starred New York actress Sofia Jean Gomez as Nora. North Coast Repertory Theatre of Solana Beach, produced three outstanding productions during their 38thSeason: “Amadeus,” the riveting story of musical genius Mozart and his jealous rival Antonio Solieri was brilliantly directed by Richard Baird; who also directed the
triumphant “A Walk in the Woods” by playwright Lee Blessing; talky but terrific. “The Sunshine Boys,” one of Neil Simon’s best comedies was solidly helmed by Jeffery B. Moss and terrifically performed by Lenny Wolpe and James Sutorius. It was quite a season of theatre for Southern California audiences. Year 2019 has left the building. It’s now 2020. It’s also the beginning of a new decade. The above comments and selections were viewed through my lenses as I saw them as a member of the audience. I hope I selected some of your favorite theatrical productions, performers, and memorable moments as well during 2019. See you at the theatre in 2020. FYI: ATTENTION MOVIE FANS. ... HOROSCOPES ARIES
The time has come to shine in the world, to be recognized and applauded. Ponder upon your abilities and talents. They are to be offered, like gifts of the Magi, to humanity. You are to work in groups where people of Goodwill work. These groups understand the importance of justice, goodness and human rights. Outline your abilities, then create a structure and form on how you can serve with these gifts. This is the future.
TAURUS New goals may appear that will assist in giving your life order and the needed organization. Either a pilgrimage or deep study of a philosophical truth that defines your past, present and future. You may also discover and pursue new music. If tone deaf and can’t sing, you may discover new foods. Whatever you do, truth and justice are your keynotes. You are a living representative of the Ageless Wisdom teachings.
GEMINI Circumstances have changed you and you realize you’re becoming more determined and courageous. Simultaneously you also feel more emotional and realize that sharing (thoughts words, deed) is important. So many challenges must be overcome. How to express yourself so you’re understood and yet realizing how difficult it is to speak
JANUARY 1 – 7, 2020 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES
with clarity. For the next year, you’ve become a Scorpio.
CANCER It’s good to be solitary but now you seek more companionship, friendships and want to be emotionally closer to others. What is most important is to understand what love is. It’s not an emotion, and it’s hard to cultivate. Love is a force, a Light. It’s pure reason. It’s intelligence and magnetic. It emerges, like Peace, from intentions of Goodwill, which create Right Relations. This is an esoteric formula. When you remember, you can use it.
LEO Cancer’s horoscope applies to you, also, for you are the heart & purveyor of love. It’s important this year to look at your daily work schedules and health (which could use a bit more tending). You wish to be free yet you face many responsibilities. You have all these goals but not much energy to accomplish them. What is the message? That your health must be the foremost goal you undertake. You can do this. And you will. Many creatures depend upon you.
VIRGO Even if you’re challenged, you don’t often change your plans. At first you decide to communicate as clearly as possible. If this doesn’t work you continue on alone and then realize the shift you seek is indeed possible. New
thoughts begin to occur. Make time each day to stand in the Sun to absorb its warmth, love, and intelligence. Kindness is at the heart of the (all) matter(s).
LIBRA A deep spiritual awareness is seeking to develop slowly yet surely in your life. The presence of the Divine Mother and your real biological mother need to become one and the same. Family matters, past, present, future, are most important this month. Tend to them with care, forgiveness and loving understanding. You know how to do this with friends. Now it must be equally applied to family. Especially to one in particular.
SCORPIO Try not to let large philosophical issues become personal issues that create separations. Gather and then disperse information like a Gemini. Local travel is good for you now. Don’t stay home behind the curtains, doors and windows closed. You need to enjoy the outdoors more. Nature is the body of God. It’s calling you to attention, to health and healing, to come out and play awhile.
SAGITTARIUS Finances, big and small, past and present remain your focus. Most of the planets have taken up residence in your house of money, resources and values. You need to rest a bit more. Exhaustion can take over quite easily. Things
will be better in the money department. A good first step is to tithe regularly to those in need. What’s given is received back ten-fold. Have your values changed recently?
CAPRICORN You have the ability to inspire others to love more by the way you love them. When others spend time with you a calm inner sense of purpose and intelligence radiates from you. This is Jupiter (love/wisdom) presently residing in Capricorn. When friends leave you they are kinder, gentler and better humans. Recognizing this about your state of grace activates it consciously.
back to the present. You, too, need nature to walk in every day, for long lengths of time. Have you been working on future goals, knowing what you want and need? You will learn how to direct thought power to achieve those goals. But they must be named first. Be one-pointed. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.
AQUARIUS You are going through a new sense of self identity. A practical one. There will be reassessments and redoings of things undone... or not done well enough. It’s possible a parent or mentor will appear. Or a religious discipline will be remembered or resumed. These reactivate feelings from the past to be sorted out. Your tolerance grows with understanding and compassion. The new year is a time of reflection and of deep spirituality.
PISCES Work has been from dawn till dusk, an endless array of tasks, responsibilities, chores, duties, errands and creative work. It’s good. It’s exhausting. It’s calling humanity, calling the new world order and culture

Utah Gets Federal OK for Full Medicaid Expansion Plan By Desert Star Staff SALT LAKE CITY - Thanks to the state’s “fallback plan,” about 60,000 more Utahns will become eligible for Medicaid benefits on Wednesday. Federal officials last week approved a waiver for the state that includes a full Medicaid expansion with work-reporting requirements. That comes almost a year after Utah voters approved Proposition 3, an initiative directing the state to accept a full Medicaid expansion. However, state lawmakers overturned that vote and replaced it with a plan to install a partial expansion. Stacy Stanford is a health policy analyst with the Utah Health Policy Project. She says federal officials rejected the partial expansion, triggering a contingency or fallback plan that is part of SB 96, the enabling legislation. “Full Medicaid expansion makes it so the only thing needed to qualify is to be

poor enough,” says Stanford. “Utah has done that with some strings attached. So, if your income is low enough, you’re in - if you can meet the work reporting requirement.” The expansion extends coverage to individuals making less than $17,000 a year, or families earning up to $35,000. However, advocates such as the Utah Health Policy Project say work requirements could bump about 7,500 or more Utahns from the rolls. “They’re kind of giving care with one hand but taking it away from some people with the other,” says Stanford. “Because these work requirements we’ve seen in the only state where it’s been implemented - in Arkansas - that 18,000 people lost their health insurance. “ Utah officials were paying 32% for the partial Medicaid program, but the state will receive the 90% - 10% match rate, and will cover more

Stanford says the battle to expand Medicaid has cost Utah’s taxpayers a lot. “Utah has lost an estimated $5.5 billion in federal tax dollars that we January 1, 2020

Renee Zellweger Stars in ‘Judy’
“A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” Wizard of Oz Judy Garland appeared in fifty motion pictures, but perhaps her most beloved role was as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” In “Judy,” Renee Zellweger portrays Garland, who, at age 47, has come to London to perform in a fiveweek sold-out run at “The Talk of the Town.” Her goal is to revitalize her singing career so she can earn enough money to retain custody of her two youngest children. Their father, director Sidney Luft (Rufus Sewell), acknowledges that the children love her, but he feels he can give them a more stable home life. While in London, Garland has bouts of stage fright and often feels too emotionally ill to perform. Fortunately, the theatre manager (Michael Gambon) has assigned Garland an assistant (Jessie Buckley), who makes sure that Garland goes on stage every night.
During her tour, a former friend Mickey Deans (Finn Wittrock), pays a surprise visit. Soon a romantic spark is reignited, and he becomes her fifth husband. It seems that Judy is always willing to give love and romance another try. But as in all of Judy’s relationships, difficulties eventually arise. One of the most endearing portions of the film deals with two gay men Judy meets after her show. They are big fans who invite her to have a home-cooked dinner with them since it is late and restaurants are now closed. While fiction, not fact, this brief encounter is one of the highpoints of the film. It also reveals the love fans felt for Judy, and the love and appreciation Judy felt for her fans in return. While the film basically takes place in1969, the final year of Judy’s life, it periodically flashes back to Judy’s early film career. Actress Darcy Shaw plays the youthful Judy as she deals with her controlling
mother on the set of “The Wizard of Oz” or has fun with co-star Mickey Rooney in spirited film comedies. At one point, she acknowledges that Mickey was one of the best men in her life. Zellwegger is not only an Oscar-winning actress, but she is also an excellent singer who performs the following songs in the film: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Rain or
Shine,” “San Francisco,” “Get Happy.” “The Trolly Song” and “For Once in My Life.” The screenplay was written by Tom Edge, based on the stage play “End of the Rainbow” by “Peter Quilter. Sadly Garland died on June 22, 1969, at the age of 47 years from an accidental barbiturate overdose. ‘Judy,’ now available on DVD, is rated PG-
13 for substance abuse, thematic content, some strong language, and smoking. Running time: 1 hour, 58 minutes.

India set to overtake Germany as world’s fourth largest economy
By Desert Star Staff India will reach its goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2026, making it the fourth biggest economy on the planet, according to a report by the UK-based Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR). By 2034, the South Asian nation will be the world’s third largest, it added. “India has decisively overtaken both France and the UK to become the world’s fifthlargest economy in 2019. It is expected to overtake Germany to become fourth largest in 2026, and Japan to become the third largest in 2034.” The three countries India, Germany and Japan - will continue to battle for
the position of third-largest economy over the next 15 years, said CEBR. It noted that India’s “slow growth during the year has increased pressure for more radical economic reforms.” The country’s economy, hailed as the fastest-growing in the world, grew by five percent year-on-year between April and June. This was its weakest pace since 2013, coming on the back of slowing consumer demand and government spending amid global trade conflicts. Goldman Sachs projected this month that the Indian economy will rebound in 2020 as global conditions are set to improve.

Ambassador Calls For More American Trade With Greece
By Anthony Grant Addressing the prestigious Capital Link Invest in Greece Forum in New York City in December, Ambassador of Greece to the United States Haris Lalacos pointed out the “tremendous improvement in the bilateral relationship” while underscoring a strategic dimension to trade between the U.S. and Greece. “It is important to attract American investment to Greece,” Lalacos said to a roomful of captains of Industry from both nations, “because experience shows us if our friends and allies do not invest in Greece, others will.” The same day at the same event Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross praised the recent turnaround in the Greek economy but also delivered a warning: “Geopolitically motivated cash can be just as dangerous as a Trojan horse, and there can be a tendency for ports to become the equivalent of naval bases.” Of course, he was talking about China. I sat down with Haris Lalacos on the sidelines of the forum for some frank talk about travel, Trump, and more:
what you see as potentially malign influences—I’m using the American terminology here—if there is no competition for the Chinese in the area of investment? The port of Piraeus is a typical example of privatization that Greece had to have in a given period. It was an obligation that we had towards the representatives of the creditors at the time when the Greek economy was on the brink of default. We had to privatize part of the port of Piraeus to a concession. The ownership is still Greek. And the only serious bidders were the Chinese.
…there were no American bidders? There were no Americans and no Western Europeans. There was no interest. And we had an obligation— we couldn’t wait. Because we had signed an agreement, it was part of the first memorandum that we signed with the creditors. And the truth is that Cosco came to Piraeus and, in record time, developed Piraeus. Very honestly, what we saw was the continuation of an upward trend in the bilateral relationship which had started with the previous administration. During eight years with Obama, relations with Greece took an upswing, and the image of the United States in Greece improved massively. Like everybody else, we were a little bit anxious to see how the Trump administration would react to that. And it turns out they took it from where the current administration left it…in Greece, at the same time, we had a change of government, but all the

Texas church shooting
Gunman neutralized by parishioners after killing 1 & gravely injuring another in White Settlement
By Desert Star Staff A gunman killed one and injured another person during a service at a church in White Settlement, Texas before a parishioner shot him dead. In a graphic live-streamed video from the service, the gunman - wearing a black hood - approaches the communion server before pulling out what appears to be a shotgun. He manages to shoot two worshippers at point-blank range as the panicked crowd dives for cover among the wooden pews. Before the gunman can squeeze off a third shot, an armed “heroic parishioner”
as police later call him shoots the perpetrator. Multiple other bystanders pull weapons and encircle the man. Online responds: • At this time, we are not showing the video from the shooting. In it, you see a person near the front with a gun. Shots are fired. Moments after church leaders say on the mic, “we have a gentleman who came in armed to do harm, and the police are on their way.” • “It was the scariest thing. You feel like your life is flashing before you. I was so worried about my little one,” witness Isabel Arreola was
quoted by CBS 11 News. • Video Livestream still from West Freeway Church of Christ shooting - shooter can be seen wearing a black
hood of some sort and a rifle. • The gunman was killed at the scene, while one of his victims died on the way to the hospital, and another
one is still in critical condition. • Heavy police presence after church shooting leaves 2 dead and 1 injured.

When Holidays are Hard Tips for coping with a food-centric season
D
FAMILY FEATURES
uring the holidays, no matter where you turn, you find food, food and more food. From vendor treats filling the office breakroom to celebratory dinners with family and friends, virtually everything and everyone seems to be focused on food. For someone working to overcome an eating disorder, it makes the season anything but festive. Eating disorders affect 20 million females and 10 million males in the United States and can be diagnosed in boys and girls 7 years old and sometimes even younger. Eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice; they are mental health disorders similar to depression, bipolar disease or schizophrenia. It is not an individual choice to develop an eating disorder, but rather severe underlying pathological factors which drive individuals to take part in self-destructive behaviors associated with eating disorders. Genetic, environmental and social factors all play a role in the development of an eating disorder. Interpersonal issues, past trauma, low self-esteem, abuse, co-occurring mental health disorders, substance abuse disorders and unhealthy family and personal relationships can all contribute to the environmental and social factors associated with eating disorders. Even for someone who is well into a successful recovery program, the holidays can trigger unwanted thoughts and comments surrounding food. Whether you are actively treating your eating disorder or suspect you may have one, you can take steps to make this holiday season more comfortable with these tips from eating disorder expert and licensed therapist Dawn Delgado, director of clinical development at Center for Discovery.
1. Always have a safe plan. If you plan on attending a holiday party or gathering, you may want to consult with your dietitian to have a plan beforehand, especially if you feel you may be inclined to binge. If you feel triggered to binge, or if you feel pressured by another individual, create an escape plan, which may mean having a friend accompany you to the party or even come pick you up. Your plan may also involve finding a safe place at the party where you can be alone to gather your thoughts until you feel comfortable re-engaging with others. 2. Be prepared to say “no.” Many individuals, with good intentions, will push food your way. They will want you to try their favorite dessert or their new recipe without understanding your struggle. Know that it is OK to say “no” and to take care of yourself in these situations. You can choose to clarify why you are saying “no,” but do not feel obligated to do so. Also give yourself permission to decline joining holiday office parties, family parties or other holidaythemed get-togethers if your recovery could be compromised, or plan to bring a supportive friend. 3. Know your triggers before you engage in social situations. Understanding your triggers and learning how to use coping skills to control them at holiday functions can help keep negative thoughts and self-sabotaging at bay. If there are certain topics of conversation that trigger you then avoid those topics or change the conversation when those topics arise. Be honest with yourself, be honest with others, recognize your emotions and learn to take control of your scenarios.
Mindful Eating Tips
These simple steps can help you rediscover your natural intuition about food and hunger. These tips can be used all in one meal or you can choose one tip at a time to focus on. When you feel you have mastered one, try a new one. Over time, eating mindfully can become second nature. 1. Practice mindfulness: Start by eating one meal a day in a slower, more aware manner. 2. Hunger check: Before eating, check in with yourself to determine how hungry you are. Are you hungry enough for a meal or just a snack? 3. Emotional check: What are you feeling? Are you happy, content, stressed, bored or something different? 4. Senses check: What type of food are you hungry for? Do you want savory, sweet or salty? Do you want something hot or cold? 5. Time check: Do you have time to sit and savor? Or are you crunched for time? 6. Time crunch: Planning to nourish your body is an act of mindfulness. Taking the time to grab some food or packing food to eat on the go is being mindful that your body needs fuel. 7. Focus: Concentrate on the meal in front of you. Avoid doing other activities while you eat such as working, talking on the phone, watching TV, driving or reading. 8. Savor: While eating, notice the colors, smells, flavors and textures of the food. 9. Food awareness: Notice your reaction to the food you are eating. What do you like, what don’t you like? If you are enjoying your food, savor it. If you don’t like your food, choose something more appealing. 10. Patience and grace: Mindful eating is a practice that takes time to learn and develop. Since there is no judgment in mindful eating, give yourself grace and patience as you learn.

Supporting a Loved One
Watching someone you care for battle an eating disorder can be emotionally challenging, but your love and support can make a big difference during the stressful holiday season with these tips from the experts at Center for Discovery: n If you’re uncertain how you can help, just ask then be prepared to listen without judgment. n Make it clear you are willing to be a sounding board or assist your loved one in getting to a safe place if he or she is triggered during an event. n Voice concerns privately. Public comments about weight, body shape or food choices can only exacerbate the angst your loved one is feeling, and when you put him or her on the defensive, he or she is less likely to be receptive to your genuine concern.

2020 Resolutions: Organizing with Calendars, Reminders, and Notes By Desert Star Staff As we wrap up the holiday celebrations, it may be time for a new and improved you – or at least some new resolutions for 2020. Of course, New Year’s resolutions take commitment and resolve, but they also require organization and planning. If you want to create a new habit, you’ll have much better success if you organize around all aspects of your life, such as work and family time, and not just your resolutions. That’s where smartphones can play a role. Those handy devices in our pockets have numerous ways to help us keep track of our needs and goals. Here are T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile’s tips on how your smartphone can help you better organize your life, track your progress, and help you achieve those new year’s resolutions. 1. Organize your calendarMany of us already have packed home or work schedules, which can make it hard to introduce a new habit like going to the gym, learning a skill, or picking up a new hobby. Using a calendar on your smartphone or computer can help you manage your work and personal life so you can find time to set aside for new things. Apple and Google calendars can help remind you of to-dos, appointments, and meetings. And if you have a work calendar on a different email service such as Outlook, you’ll be able to integrate it with an Apple or Google calendar as well. These calendars also allow you to share events with friends, family, and co-workers. One great feature from Google Calendar is Goals, which will automatically schedule a time for your new resolution, whether it’s exercise routines or hobbies, based on where it will fit best in your schedule. It may not always be the best time for you, but it can help you stay on track and keep your goals top of mind. 2. Use a reminders app Using a reminders app is a great way to clear your headspace, as you can schedule both one-off and re-occurring reminders, and both time- and location-based reminders. For example, set a 6:00 PM reminder for “workout,” or create a “call Mom” reminder that will pop up when you arrive at home. If you’re an Apple iPhone user, you can also ask Siri to create reminders for you. For iPhone users, you can’t beat the Reminders app, which comes pre-installed on all Apple devices. The Google Keep app is the most popular for Android users and offers almost all of the same features. If you don’t want a separate app specifically for reminders, you can also schedule reminders in Google Calendar. 3. Use a note-taking app Tracking progress against your goals can help you see the

results of your work while giving you a motivational boost to keep at it. Apple’s Notes app is pre-installed on iPhones and automatically syncs across all your Apple devices so you can create to-do lists, write journals, and jot down any other notes you need to take. If you don’t have an Apple device—or even if you do—there are plenty of options for note-taking apps such as GoodNotes or Evernote, which also sync across your devices. And, as with the calendars mentioned above, you can share notes with others. 4. Peruse app stores for “Productivity” Unless your resolution, in particular, there’s a good chance the Apple App Store or Google Play Store will have an app that can help you achieve your goals. Want to run more? Check out the Nike Run Club. Want to learn how to play
the guitar? Try Yousician. Want to budget better? Look at Mint. Even if you’re not looking for apps for your resolutions, each app store has a “Productivity” category with many great options for
helping organize your life. Between calendars, reminders, and note-taking apps, there are plenty of ways to organize your life and keep track of the things you need to do. In the end,
do whatever works best for you and knock out those new year’s resolutions all year long! Want to get even more out of your smartphone? Check out Screen Time: How Much Is Too Much? in T-Mobile’s Newsroom.

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Music Columnist’s Favorite 19 albums of 2019
This year came and went in a flash but there were plenty of memorable albums that came out along the way. Here are my favorite 19 albums of 2019; rather than rank these (it’s impossible for me to play favorites) I am simply listing my top releases with artists being listed alphabetically. “Hyperspace,” Beck – With modern rock no longer a major force in the mainstream, Beck has continued his transformation into the future with his genres-blending fourteenth studio album “Hyperspace.” What a ride! “The Red Wheelbarrow,” Bobbo Byrnes – In addition to his role in the Fallen Stars, Bobbo Byrnes is a prolific and leading voice on the independent Americana scene. That will come as little surprise after getting a listen to his fantastic solo effort “The Red Wheelbarrow.”
sonic landscape created with melodic song craft, nuanced arrangements, artful vocal harmonies and the talents of the band’s all original lineup of Tony Scalzo (lead vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards), Miles Zuniga (lead vocals, guitar), and Joey Shuffield (drums, percussion).
“The Floating World” including the dreamy “Avalanche,” luxurious “Highway Machine,” magnificent Beatlesque “Floating World,” baroque pop ballad “Fence” and inspired “This River.” A breathtaking album that resonates more with each listen.
“Resurrection,” Kinky Friedman – Texas-based singer-songwriter Kinky Friedman’s “Resurrection” is a profound album of original songs that serve as a bona fide reminder of the power of music and masterful songwriting.
“Play the Hits,” The Mavericks – Thirty years into their singular career blending neotraditional country, Americana, rockabilly and Tex-Mex styles, the Mavericks have come full circle offering up their signature sound on 11 reworked covers on the delightful “Play the Hits.”
“Okie,” Vince Gill – “Okie” is an album that fully captures Oklahoma native Vince Gill’s towering talents as singer, songwriter and master guitarist.
“Morning Sun,” The HawtThorns – Shimmering songwriting and top-tier vocals take center stage on “Morning Sun,” the brilliant debut from the HawtThorns. Featuring “Everyday Life,” Coldplay the talented husband and wife – As seems to be the case duo of singer-acoustic guitarist every time Coldplay releases KP Hawthorn and singera new album, there has been guitarist Johnny Hawthorn, the plenty of dissension and debate HawtThorns somehow blend among fans about whether the the best of the Laurel Canyon British band’s long-awaited California sound, modern album “Everyday Life” merits Americana and melodic its ambitions. “Sitting on Top of the Blues,” Bobby Rush – Bluesman Bobby Rush’s aptly-pegged “Sitting on Top of the Blues” is filled with infectious tracks that recall the past while propelling the genre into the future.

“Reckless & Me,” Kiefer Sutherland – All the honest real life tales and authentic traditional country music elements that made Sutherland’s 2016 debut a thrill are firmly in place on his sophomore album “Reckless & Me” with the raspy-voiced singer demonstrating even more confidence with his signature vocals and ambitious arrangements. “Into the Blue,” Alice Wallace – An album that combines the best of contemporary Americana and country music styles, “Into the Blue” should further introduce emerging songstress Alice Wallace to a wider audience. “Where The Action Is,” The Waterboys – Singersongwriter Mike Scott and his outstanding group known as the Waterboys have returned with another must-hear album (“Where the Action Is”)
of literate and lusty rock. “WHO,” The Who – “WHO” is the Who’s best album since 1982’s “It’s Hard,” and is remarkable on every level – in fact it is one of the best albums of 2019. This is one fan who was genuinely surprised and ultimately thrilled to welcome back Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey this year. “Caretakers,” Pete Yorn – On Pete Yorn’s seventh solo full-length effort “Caretakers” there are quiet moments of reflection (“Caretakers,” “Friends,” “Do You Want to Love Again?”), wistful celebration (the folk rocker “I Wanna Be The One,” the infectious “POV”) and a determined quest to translate this crazy thing we call life into song (the dreamy “Calm Down,” the shimmering “Can’t Stop You,” “Opal”) that add up to an outstanding return.

Fans apoplectic as Ronaldo wins Dubai Globe Soccer Player of Year 2019
By Desert Star Staff Cristiano Ronaldo’s crowning as Dubai Globe Soccer Awards 2019 Player of the Year has been panned by fans who laughed off the gong as a made-up award as he beat Lionel Messi to win the honor on Saturday. Juventus winger Ronaldo was pipped to the 2019 Ballon d’Or by perennial rival Lionel Messi in early December, finishing in third place overall behind Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. Ronaldo opted not to attend the ceremony in Paris, instead collecting his Italian Footballers’ Association Footballer of the Year trophy a day later. Online response • Official: Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Best Player of the Year at the 2019 Globe
Soccer Awards. He beat Lionel Messi, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mané, Bernardo Silva, Alisson and Mohamed Salah. • This time however, Ronaldo was on hand in the United Arab Emirates to collect the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards Player of the Year award for the second year running, beating off competition from Messi, van Dijk, Sadio Mané, Bernardo Silva, Alisson and Mohamed Salah. • Fans were quick to lampoon the honor on Twitter as a flimsy consolation prize for Ronaldo missing out on being named the world’s best player and questioned its substance. One jibed “did he make up the award himself?” • This time however, Ronaldo was on hand in the United Arab Emirates to

Trump Plan to Import Cheaper Canadian Drugs Won’t Help Diabetics
Gary Zuckett, executive director of the West Virginia Citizen Action Group, calls the proposal a “Band-Aid solution” that faces too many obstacles,
including opposition from the U.S. pharmaceutical industry. He says what’s really needed is for Congress to pass more immediate legislation. He likes House Resolution 3, known as the Lower Drug Costs Now Act. “What I would like to have happen even more is to have H.R. 3 pass in the Senate, which would allow Medicare to negotiate for lower drug prices, and then would allow private insurance to piggyback on those negotiated prices,” says Zuckett. In announcing the proposal, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said that allowing drug imports can move the country to a more open and competitive market to eventually reduce prices. But the Trump proposal also excludes many expensive medications, including insulin. Zucket says excluding
insulin is a major drawback for West Virginians, who have the second-highest rate of diabetes in the nation. His group recently helped charter a bus from Charleston to Niagara Falls in Canada for those who need to purchase the drug. A vial of insulin in the U.S. costs about $300 without insurance, he says - while in Canada, the same product is $30. He blames the difference on corporate interests. “The whole system is rigged in favor of Big Pharma and Big Pharma’s profits, because they have highpriced lobbyists that can get the laws swung in their direction,” says Zuckett. West Virginians have been hit particularly hard by skyrocketing medication costs. The Mountain State ranks fifth in the nation for most money spent on prescription drugs, totaling $650 million in 2018.

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: LARRY DEAN BAILOR. PRIN1901469. To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both of Larry Dean Bailor. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by James R. Bailor in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that James R. Bailor be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedents will and codicils, if any be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held in this court as follows: JANUARY 28, 2020 at 8:45AM in Dept. PS3 located at 3255 E. TAHQUITZ WAY, PALM SPRINGS, CA 92262. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: ERIC A. RUDOLPH, 400 S. FARRELL DRIVE, SUITE B200, PALM SPRINGS, CA 92262 760-673-7600. Looking for a Healthy New Year’s Resolution? Don’t Overlook Your Eyes By Desert Star Staff The most ambitious time of year is upon us: the time to set New Year’s resolutions. All the parties have been hosted, the marshmallows have been toasted and you’ve binged on your new favorite TV show the entire month of December. Now you’re asking yourself, “What do I want to accomplish this year?” A New Year’s resolution is, for all intents and purposes, a good thing. Now consider this twist on the standard resolution format: opt for a few, small, lifestyle wins rather than mounting an allout assault on your current habits – more resolution-lite, if you will. Choose resolutions
that have clear start and end points, and that are attainable for you. Most of all, resolutions should make you feel good – that’s the whole point, right? “A resolution that checks all the boxes is to get an eye exam,” says VSP network doctor, Jennifer Chinn. If you have loved ones in mind, bring them. Their eyes will thank you. Here’s why: • It’s Easy: With a comprehensive eye exam, there’s no uncomfortable warm-up, pep talk or preparation period. Making an appointment is easy: you simply show up and your eye doctor tests different aspects of your vision and eye
health. Save the maximum effort for a goal further down your list, knowing an eye exam is a small investment of energy that reaps huge health rewards. • It Doesn’t Take All Year: You can be certain that unlike most resolutions where some level of delayed gratification is the motivator, a comprehensive eye exam provides immediate results. “All within your visit, you’ll learn the shape your vision is in, and, if you wear glasses or contact lenses, whether your prescription has changed,” Dr. Chinn says. • It’s Really Healthy: Beyond ensuring great vision, an eye exam offers
an incredible look into your overall health. In fact, an eye exam is often the first line of defense when it comes to protecting your health. During your visit, the eye doctor will examine your eyes to check their visual acuity (or how clearly you see), and for any signs of eye conditions like dry eyes, digital eye strain, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. “More significantly, a comprehensive eye exam gives eye doctors an unobstructed view of the eyes’ blood vessels and optic nerves, both of which can give away signs of chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and
even some cancers years before a person shows symptoms,” notes Dr. Chinn. Unfortunately, many outward signals of diseases and conditions don’t appear until some damage has occurred, making eye exams powerful, preventative tools to keep tabs on what’s quietly happening in your body. To find an eye doctor near you, visit www. vsp.com/eye-doctor. You don’t need 20/20 vision to see that the case for a 2020 eye exam is clear. Make this the year you commit to an annual trip to the eye doctor. StatePoint

DHS Man Suspected of Placing Camera in Cathedral City Bathroom
NBC PS News Staff A small video camera found inside a bathroom at a Stater Bros grocery store in Cathedral City led to the arrest of one-time registered sex offender suspected of placing similar cameras in bathrooms across the Coachella Valley, authorities said Tuesday. Cathedral City Police officers responded to the Stater Bros at 69244 Ramon Road on Monday after store staff located a video camera in one of the store’s public single-occupancy bathrooms. Officers determined that a “small, covert camera” had been affixed inside the bathroom, “for the purpose
of illegal video monitoring (and) surveillance,” according to the department. Through unspecified methods, police determined that Jason Pomare, 41, of Desert Hot Springs, had placed the recording device in the bathroom. Pomare was arrested at his home in the 13000 Block of Eliseo Road at about 5:50 p.m. Police said officers found several items at the residence linking Pomare to the crime. According to police, Pomare was previously a registered sex offender in California due to an unspecified sex crime, but he is no longer required to register.
Police said Pomare is suspected of placing similar cameras in unspecified bathrooms across the Coachella Valley. Police are in the process of contacting the affected restaurants, which were not publicly identified. Pomare was booked at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta. He remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail and is tentatively scheduled to be arraigned at the Larson Justice Center in Indio on Friday. According to court records, Pomare does not have any felony convictions in Riverside County. Source: NBC Palm Springs
5 Hasidic Jews stabbed in machete attack on rabbi’s house & synagogue
By Desert Star Staff At least five people have suffered multiple stabbing and slashing injuries following a gruesome machete attack during Hanukkah celebrations at a rabbi’s home next to a synagogue in Monsey, New York. The perpetrator, allegedly a black male, broke into the house of Rabbi Rottenberg Shul around 9:50pm local time, armed with a machete and began slashing and stabbing people, chasing the victims as they tried to flee the bloody chaos. Online responds: • Video from the scene of the stabbings at a synagogue in Monsey where Chassidim were gathered for a Hanukkah celebration. • According to some reports, he then tried to break into the adjacent synagogue, with people barricaded inside, but failed and fled the scene in a silver vehicle. • Video from the scene. • As the day progressed, New York
&
police reportedly arrested a possible suspect in a car that matched the description of a vehicle used to escape the synagogue. The arrest was made by NYPD 32nd precinct, which oversees the northeast of Harlem. • There were at least five victims – all Hasidic Jews – according to the local Orthodox Jews Public Affairs Council. It is not clear if anyone was killed, but at least two of those rushed to the hospital are reportedly in critical condition. • One of the victims was stabbed at least 6 times. The fifth/least severe case had a cut in his hand. Perp left in a vehicle with tag number HPT-5757 per the person who saw it, and we confirmed it with him directly (but it was dark and rushed.) a Gray Nissan Sentra. • “We are closely monitoring the reports of multiple people stabbed at a synagogue in Monsey, NY (Rockland County),â€? a representative of the
New York City Police Department Counterterrorism Bureau tweeted. • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo responded to the attack, calling it “a despicable and cowardly act.â€? Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city “will not allow this to become the new
normalâ€? and will “use every tool we have to stop these attacks once and for all.â€? • Someone on the scene: The perpetrator came into the rabbi’s house, started stabbing people. Someone took a small table, threw it at him & chased him out. He ran next door to the
synagogue, but they blocked the door & he couldn’t get in. He turned around & ran, jumped into a car. — Avital ChizhikGoldschmidt Police launched an extensive manhunt while videos shared on social media show dozens of officers working at the scene.

10 Doctor-Recommended Health Tips for the New Year
By Desert Star Staff Four in 10 adults in the U.S. have two or more chronic diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While certain conditions and risk factors are beyond one’s control, the new year is the perfect time to consider the many lifestyle choices you can make for improved health. “With too many holiday sweets and not enough exercise likely in the rearview mirror, now is the perfect time to consider your personal goals and how you can make positive health choices in the coming year,” says American Medical Association (AMA) President Patrice A. Harris, M.D. “The good news is that there are a few easy steps you can take that will set you on the right track for a healthier 2020.” To get you started, the AMA is offering 10 wellness tips for the new year: 1. Steps you take now can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Learn your risk by taking the self-screening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org. 2. Be more physically active. Adults should do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity,
or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity. 3. Visit LowerYourHBP. org to better understand blood pressure numbers and take necessary steps to get high blood pressure – also known as hypertension -- under control. Doing so will reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke. 4. Reduce your intake of processed foods, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Eat less red meat and processed meats, and add more plant-based foods, such as olive oil, nuts and seeds to your diet. Also reduce your consumption of sugarsweetened beverages and drink more water instead. Drinking sugary beverages -- even 100% fruit juices -- is associated with a higher allcause mortality risk, a new study published in JAMA Network Open suggests. 5. If your health care professional determines that you need antibiotics, take them exactly as prescribed. Antibiotic resistance is a serious public health problem and antibiotics will not make you feel better if you have a virus, such as a cold or flu. 6. If consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary
Guidelines for Americans -- up to one drink daily for women and two drinks daily for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age. 7. Talk with your doctor about tobacco and e-cigarette use (or vaping) and how to quit. Declare your home and car smokeand aerosol-free to eliminate secondhand exposure. 8. Pain medication is personal. If you’re taking prescription opioids or other
medications, follow your doctor’s instructions. Store them safely to prevent misuse and properly dispose of any leftover medication. 9. Make sure your family is up-to-date on vaccines, including the annual influenza vaccine for everyone age six months or older. If you’re pregnant, you can receive the flu vaccine during any trimester, but should receive the Tdap vaccine early in the third trimester
to protect yourself against flu and whooping cough. 10. Manage stress. A good diet, sufficient sleep (at least 7.5 hours per night), daily exercise and wellness activities, like yoga and meditation, are key ingredients to maintaining and improving your mental health, but don’t hesitate to ask for help from a mental health professional when you need it. Navigating Garden Catalogs to Plan for the Season Ahead By Melinda Myers As garden catalogs are piling up and online versions fill your inbox, your thoughts may turn to the growing season ahead. With so many choices of beautiful flowers and delicious vegetables, it can be overwhelming and hard to resist buying more seeds and plants than you have space to grow and time to tend. Start by flipping through the pages of various catalogs and searching gardening websites and online catalogs to gather ideas and

inspiration. Narrow down your search by selecting plants suited to your climate and growing conditions. Quality catalogs will list the cold hardiness zone of trees, shrubs, and perennials and often include the Plant Hardiness Zone Map developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These hardiness zones are based on the average minimum winter temperature. The lower the number, the more cold-tolerant the plant. Sunset Climate Zones for
North America may be new to many gardeners. A variety of factors beyond high and low temperatures were considered when the 45 hardiness zones were created. Microclimates, growing season, rainfall, humidity, wind patterns, and ocean currents were some of the other factors that went into defining these zones. Read the plant description and select plants that match the light, soil, and moisture in your garden. Make sure annual flowers and vegetables you select have time to

flower and produce before your season ends. Those with a longer time to harvest than your growing season allows will need to be started indoors. You will need time and indoor growing space to start your own long-season plants from seed indoors. Select the most disease resistant and low maintenance varieties whenever possible. Make sure you have enough space in the garden or containers for all the plants you select and for each of them to reach their mature size. Overcrowding plants increases the risk of disease and can reduce flowering and productivity. Look for award-winning plants when reviewing the catalogs. All-America Selections’ winners (AAS) are tested nationally and selected for improved growth habit, flowering, pest resistance, or some other unique feature for the home garden. Perennial Plant, Hosta, and Daylilies of the Year are selected by members of the various organizations for their outstanding performance. Consult your local University Extension service. Most create lists of plants and varieties that are best suited to your region. They often
recommend planting dates based on the average local soil and air temperatures. Your next step – inventory any leftover seeds saved from last season. When stored correctly in a cool dark location, many seeds can last for years. Longevity does vary with the type of seed, but you may be surprised to find you can get years of planting from one packet of seeds. Onions, parsley, verbena, and salvia usually last about a year, whereas properly stored Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and zinnias can last an average of five years. Create your list and set it aside for a day or two before placing your orders. A bit of planning can save you money and increase success as you grow plants best suited to your climate and gardening space. Melinda Myers has written numerous books, including Small Space Gardening. She hosts The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything” DVD series and the nationally-syndicated Melinda’s Garden Moment TV & radio program.
