Museum of History

Granite Museum Creates Historic Outdoor Journey By Pamela Price The Museum of History in Granite, covering 2,800 acres adjacent to I-8, Exit 64 at the Center of the World Drive ( near Yuma, AZ ), is easy to locate when you catch a glimpse of the Museum’s 25-foot section of the original Eiffel Tower installed at the

entrance. “That’s the last landmark you would expect to see en route to Yuma, AZ,” said my photographer. No, this is not a mirage, but rather an outdoor museum like none other. Having met the creators of this remarkable homage to world history, Jacques-André Istel

and his wife, Felicity, museum maven Sue Townsley said, “this historically inspired homage to world history enhances traditional history books.” After viewing history immortalized in granite from Battles of the Civil War and The Mayflower and the Plymouth Colony to A Giant

Step, an homage to American Astronaut Neil Armstrong, you realize this outdoor history lesson is a unique statement. Nate Garvelstein, a ninthgrade visitor from Boston, commented, “the engravings reveal history in a new light, reflecting the sun, you can wander from one era to another, the facts are literally etched in stone! History books aside, this unique outdoor

Museum is one of a kind!” Meticulously curated by Mr. Istel, this outdoor panorama of world history is diplomatic as well, their exhibit “American Beverage and Food” delving into a well-balanced menu of food favorites from hamburgers— etched in granite, of course—to regional American originals Continues on Page 7

Harvard students & alumni petition university to Revoke Degrees of Ted Cruz

By Desert Star Staff Not content to demand that political enemies be disbarred and banned from campus, Harvard University students are petitioning for the degrees of Senator Ted Cruz and others who challenged the 2020 election results to be revoked. A petition has begun circulating to demand that the university nullify the degrees of such graduates as Cruz (R-Texas), US Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) and White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany. The petitioners argued that by supporting President

Donald Trump’s allegations that Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory was fraudulent, the Harvard graduates helped create a “white-supremacist uprising” at the US Capitol. Cruz, a 1997 Harvard Law School graduate, spearheaded an effort in the Senate to force an investigation of alleged fraud in the 2020 election. Both Cruz and Crenshaw demanded an end to the violence during the January 6 Capitol riot. While Crenshaw supported an amicus brief asking the US Supreme Court to hear a lawsuit seeking to overturn Biden’s win, he also

Restrictions Will Remain in Place, Incoming Biden admin says

By Desert Star Staff Joe Biden has signaled that he plans to tighten Covid-19 travel restrictions, pouring cold water on a decree issued by the outgoing Administration that would terminate the entry ban on people from

Europe, the UK and Brazil. Jen Psaki, the spokeswoman for the president-elect, said on Tuesday that the emergence of “more contagious variants” of the virus meant that loosening limitations on travel was not an option.

“In fact, we plan to strengthen public health measures around international travel,” she wrote on Twitter. On our medical team’s advice, the Administration does not intend to lift these restrictions on 1/26. In fact, we plan to strengthen

public health measures around international travel to further mitigate the spread of COVID-19. — Jen Psaki Psaki’s statement was released shortly after Donald Trump issued an order saying that the entry ban on non-US citizens arriving from the UK, Ireland, the EU’s Schengen zone, and Brazil would be lifted from January 26. The decree stated that travel restrictions for China and Iran would remain in place. This action is the best way to continue protecting Americans from Covid-19 while enabling travel to resume safely,” the outgoing president said in a statement released by the White House. However, the ordered changes won’t take place until six days after Biden assumes the presidency. It appears the incoming Democrat has no intention of following through with the new rules. The incoming Administration did not elaborate on what kind of new

restrictions might be put in place. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced that all international travelers arriving in the US will be required to test negative for coronavirus within three days of their departure. The new policy will go into effect next week. Prompted by the spread of coronavirus, the United States has maintained international travel limitations for nearly a year. Trump imposed travel restrictions on China on January 31 last year. The ban on foreign entries to the US was extended to Europe in March. Biden’s team has expressed support for continuing Covid-19 restrictions, with the presidentelect even floating the national lockdown idea. The Democrat has warned of a “dark winter” for the United States, echoing some health authorities’ opinion that the coronavirus crisis in the country would likely worsen in the coming months.

Making your new routines easy and convenient can help convert unfamiliar actions into habits in nearly no time at all. Be sure to set realistic milestone goals so you can reward yourself for progress toward your end goal. If you find your self slipping along the way, take a look at what’s pushing you off your path and make adjustments. Keep your focus on the end goal and allow yourself some flexibility as you figure out the best way to get there. Find more tips to help keep your healthy living goals on track at eLivingtoday.com.

Boost Health with Lemons

Manage Meal Prep

Preparing healthy meals ahead of time makes it easier to avoid less nutritious choices when your days get busy. Use a couple of weekend hours to prep meals for the entire week and keep your healthy eating goals on track. The right tools can make the job even easier. Look for meal prep containers with dividers that help you control portions. Also look for options that stack neatly in the refrigerator and are microwave and dishwasher safe for extra convenience.

Lemons and their peels can deliver health benefits like the potential to reduce cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even cancer. You can easily incorporate lemons into your menu to help solve health problems or achieve desired outcomes like improved skin, hair, nails and more. In fact, the Nature’s Pharmacy app from Limoneira identifies 57 health concerns or desired outcomes, addressing them with 74 fruits and vegetables found in a typical grocery produce department. Setting your Goals for the Coming Year

By Janice Gough As we approach the end of 2020 and set our plan for the New Year, I have been reflecting on what has worked for me in business; I started my business in 1978 when women were not hired in the business of insurance or financial advisory. I signed with this first company that offered me an assignment. (you had to get appointed by a carrier to make your license active). Most men at that time said. “She will never make it.” But I said, “No Guts, No Glory.” This did not flatter the male ego, so most of them

thought I was doomed to fail. The most important trait to have when starting a business is: “You Must have a “winning attitude.” Goal list does not work. It must be your number for you to own it and not some company’s manager’s number. Managers would force you to give them your Goal list with expected monthly income from doing the goals. This was an exercise into futility. I had no plans other than finding a product that I could do well in sales and work the hell out of it. It brought me to the realization that we may not always achieve all our goals, especially when we attach timeframes and expectations to them. And working harder is not the answer. Your goals have to have a vision. As we saw in 2020, there always will be unpredictable outside forces that influence our ability to complete a goal. Even though plans can help us, they must apply to the present situation and what’s happening around us. Not having plans give us more creativity and adaptability to current situations. A lot of the time, these are the four activities that we are not doing well and need to work on: 1. Overcoming procrastination, 2. Keeping our focus, 3. Facing our fears and 4. Organizing (i.e., letting go of) our thoughts. What’s most important is overcoming the four challenges I just described. • For example, if you struggle with procrastination, the problem is that you are

choosing to put off what you know needs to get done now. By tackling the issue, the solutions will come. Many salespeople fail because of fear of rejection. If you can own this, it will get you past this fear. “There are 3 people in every interview…You, Me, and Me watching me perform.” Our goals are only as good as our imagination, and many times what we imagine is far less than what is possible for us to achieve. As 2020 has illustrated, We do not always know what’s going to happen. But I do know what I need to do when it happens. All one really needs to know is that they will be ready for anything that happens. The risk of using tightly defined goals may limit our ability to understand everything we can achieve, which is likely to be far more than we’ve ever imagined. This is not

S.O.S. to State Capitol

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL The 20212022 legislative session is underway and by mid-January the Legislature does not have any HOA bills pending. The past two years were eventful due to 2019’s Senate Bill 323’s substantial changes to the election processes, and 2020’s Assembly Bill 3182’s new protections of rentals within HOAs. In case a Legislator or their staff is reading, (or you want to suggest some improvements) here are ideas to HELP California HOAs. First, resolve the questions remaining about HOA elections. The new law lists only 5 possible board candidacy disqualifications, so, for example, term limits are apparently barred. Second, the statute references only board candidacy, so can boards fill vacant seats by appointing a person who would be ineligible as a candidate for election to

to say goals are not helpful. But when you set a goal for yourself, it can turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy and shape all that you imagine is possible for yourself. The point is that we will all have new opportunities and possibilities that aren’t yet apparent. Many times (I’ve learned and observed), when all the goals and lists of what we think we want to achieve disappear, we give ourselves the gift of freedom to know that we can succeed despite whatever comes our way. In doing so, we are more open to knowing how to respond to what is happening around us while it’s happening. To honestly know is to understand the big picture of what is possible, and this big picture is — simply — that anything is possible. If you do the work immediately in front of you, do it consistently and

do it well, you will be better off tomorrow than you are today. And, from my perspective, being better tomorrow is really the only goal you need. Eventually, if that is your goal, you will know how to live in limitless uncertainty and be open to all the possibilities, opportunities, and challenges available to you that help you grow. As we exit 2020, an unprecedented year for the world, my wish is that you will enter 2021, not merely imagining the possibilities but responding to them as they unfold. A new subpart “h” could be added to Civil Code 5115 so that the members, after failing to meet quorum, could proceed on a reduced quorum of 25%, to enable more elections. New Fair Housing Regulation 2 CCR §12176(b) requires that HOAs keep confidential anything about a disabled person’s request for accommodation. Therefore, such board discussions must be in closed session. Since Civil Code 4935, (listing the permissible closed session topics) does not include this subject it should be added to the list so boards can comply with Fair Housing confidentiality requirements. violent white supremacy?” The campaign to revoke degrees follows a petition earlier this month – led by Yale and Harvard students and alumni – calling for Cruz and Yale alumnus Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) to be disbarred from practicing law because of their election challenges. Civil rights lawyer Valarie Kaur said she supported the petition, even as Biden calls for unifying the politically polarized country because there can be “no healing without accountability.” Separately, Harvard professor Ryan Enos called on the university president, Lawrence Bacow, to block those who “encourage the violent overthrow of our own government” from being affiliated with the school. Students also demanded that the political pariahs be banned from speaking engagements at Harvard and from serving as Harvard Institute of Politics fellows.

The university removed US Representative Elise Stefanik (R-New York), who supported election fraud allegations, from the Institute of Politics. The latest petitioners acknowledged those moves but demanded more. Merely banning someone from campus “still grants them the benefits of their Harvard degree everywhere outside of Cambridge.” Supporters of the petition have pointed to a precedent for their demands – Harvard’s 2010 revocation of alleged Russian spy Andrey Berzukov’s degree. That argument equates making allegations of election fraud to obtaining a degree under a false identity and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The petitioners said their demands aren’t partisan because “the acceptability of violence in politics should not be up for debate at Harvard.” There were no such petitions January 20, 2021

at Harvard over the graduates who may have had some role in inciting or carrying out the political violence seen in Black Lives Matter and Antifa riots across the US last summer. On the contrary, the university and its students and alumni embraced the BLM movement. While the petitioners contended that “a Harvard degree is a privilege, not a right,” former Harvard Medical School Dean Jeffrey Flier said it’s neither a privilege nor a right. “It is a fact,” he said. “Heap well-deserved scorn on

Cruz et al., but the petition to revoke their degrees is absurd and puerile and should be embarrassing to signatories when they grow up.” Other observers said they were alarmed that the petition was signed not only by young students but also by mid-career professionals. “The un-personing purges in the West will continue until all bend the knee,” one commenter said. “To your point, this must come with a heaping helping of cognitive dissonance.”

Revolution of AR Intelligent Driving

By Desert Star Staff Raythink, the provider of the overall solution for the monitoring and displaying vehicle-assisted driving, participated in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for the first time to showcase its latest wide-angle spatial imaging AR HUD system. This new technology will be the core application utilized in intelligent vehicle cockpits in the future. CES 2021 adopted a fully digital exhibition mode for the first time. At this exhibition, Raythink, as a technology start-up, provided an AR HUD solution combined with intelligent driving, which

attracted significant attention. Raythink held online discussions with several manufacturers and technical experts to discuss the wide-angle spatial imaging AR HUD’s technological innovation and application. Raythink’s AR HUD solution uses its patented technology OpticalCore® to a wide-angle field of vision (FOV 23 degrees * 5 degrees @ 900mm eye relief, VID 15m ~ infinity). With this optical technology, we can move away from a dependence on HUD displays as shown on the PVB wedge-shaped film interlayer of windshields and present an apparent AR visual effect without ghosting

on any windshields. Raythink’s AR Generator® SDK, AR recognition algorithm and platform software system architecture can offer a safe and comfortable AR driving experience on any HUD by integrating environmental recognition with multiple data sources and the independent AR rendering engine, in combination with AI-enabled visual-spatial coordinate correction. In terms of the application of AR, Raythink’s AR HUD display product combines ADAS multi-sensor environment perception, map and navigation, and visual-assisted technology

for precise lane positioning to display several intelligent driving functions on the windshield to revolutionize the interaction with drivers, including lanelevel navigation, front collision warning (FCW), pedestrian collision warning (PCW), lane departure warning (LDW), etc. With the accelerated development of intelligent network-connected vehicles and the deployment of mass-market L3 automatic driving technology by various automobile manufacturers, the smart cockpit will be based on AR HUD as the main humancomputer interface in the future. The wide-angle spatial imaging

AR HUD brought by Raythink can realize the innovation of vehicle HMI to the greatest extent, allowing customers to feel the technology and safety of the vehicle through a visual sense, and experience the hidden joys of life in the environment through AR, to profoundly change people’s driving habits, redefine the pleasure of driving, and make driving a safe and pleasant experience enhanced by science and technology. Group Works to Research Internship Pay and Inequities

By Desert Star Staff Former unpaid interns in Congress are broadening their quest for paid internships, with a $200,000 grant to research racial inequities in internship programs across the country. The group Pays Our Interns was founded by interns who gathered data showing 90% of U.S. House of Representatives members didn’t offer to pay the people who worked for them as interns in 2017. Carlos Mark Vera, cofounder and executive director of the group, said typically, students of color are the ones who most often miss out on these work opportunities because they can’t afford to work for free. “For folks that don’t know, an internship can cost up to $6,000 when you’re talking about rent, transportation, professional clothing,” Vera explained. “Especially since most internships are in, like, New York City, D.C., Miami, you know, places that are not exactly cheap, so it’s mostly well-off kids.” A report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers said white students are more likely to have been paid as interns than Black students, and Latinx students are more likely to have never been interns. www.desertstarweekly.com

Vera noted the grant from Lumina foundations $15 million Racial Justice and Equity Fund will be used to expand its research beyond government into colleges and career centers. When Pay Our Interns first released its report showing that most congressmen didn’t pay their interns, it resulted in swift changes on Capitol Hill. Since then, Congress has passed budgets of $14 million to $17 million a year to fund internship programs. However, Vera found some children of political donors and people who could otherwise afford to be unpaid interns also tapped into the funds. “It’s not just enough about paying interns, but you also need to examine who are getting these paid opportunities, you know?” Vera contended. “And that is the whole point of this grant is, it really allows us to have the resources to examine that, and look into more research and data.” Vera said his group wants to make sure individuals from all backgrounds are represented across industries. He believes that ensuring more significant equity in internship programs that launch careers across the nation can be made.

Lumina Foundation created its Racial Justice and Equity Fund in 2017 following the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville to advance social justice initiatives, primarily focused on race relations on college campuses. (Pexels) Best Quality! Best Price! Guaranteed!

Groups Blast Feds’ Attack on Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan

The Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan contains habitat protections for many threatened species, including the desert tortoise. (Kurt Moses/Joshua Tree National Park) By Desert Star Staff MOJAVE DESERT, Calif. -- In the last week of the Trump administration, the

Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing significant changes to a 2016 plan that took eight years to hammer

out; a project that had set aside millions of acres for conservation and recreation, as well as renewable energy.

January 20, 2021

The BLM is now proposing to allow activities like energy development, mining and grazing on more than one million additional acres. Jeff Aardahl, the California representative for the group Defenders of Wildlife, said habitat protections in the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan are crucial to stopping the desert tortoise’s slide toward extinction. “The desert tortoise in California is in bad shape; its populations are crashing,” Aardahl explained. “So reducing those areas would be another blow to its potential for recovery.” The BLM also proposes slashing about four million acres from the plan currently designated as areas of critical environmental concern or California Desert National Conservation Lands. The feds claim these

changes are necessary to meet California’s renewable energy targets. Aardahl suspects the new proposal will be dead on arrival once the Biden administration takes over. “There’s nothing that requires BLM to do this,” Aardahl remarked. “It’s strictly discretionary on their part. And so, a new administration would have the full discretion to just simply announce to the public that it is terminating the previous proposal to amend the plan.” The public has 90 days to comment on the proposed changes to the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan. Cops outnumber protesters at state capitols across the US

By Desert Star Staff State capitols across the US have been reinforced against a possible wave of pro-Trump armed protests after the FBI warned of “armed groups” preparing to descend on them. The situation on the ground tells a different story. The Capitol Hill riot, which saw an unruly group

of pro-Trump protesters run amuck in the US Capitol earlier this month, has prompted politicians to warn of an undercurrent of right-wing “extremism” and “domestic terrorism” across the country. As journalists and liberal pundits openly talk of the need to “cleanse” the nation of “Trumpism,

“Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday will take place in a locked-down Washington, DC, behind unprecedented security, including 20,000 National Guardsmen. With Trump excommunicated from the internet, his supporters who stormed the Capitol facing draconian sentences, and

the National Guard itself being combed for potential Trump loyalists, the FBI warned the state-level government that “armed groups” of Trump supporters are readying an “uprising” on legislatures in all 50 states, beginning this weekend. Statehouses across the country upped their security, as anti-extremism “experts” amped up the threat to the media. Yet by Sunday afternoon, it became clear that either the FBI and the media overstated the threat, or the Trump army was standing back and keeping its powder dry. Armed protesters did show up outside the Ohio statehouse in Columbus, but they were outnumbered by police officers. A large contingent of the group appeared to be associated with the ‘Boogaloo’ movement and told reporters that they were not there on behalf of Donald Trump, but for “individual liberty for all.” In Georgia, only two armed protesters showed

up at the Capitol in Atlanta, while no demonstrators at all had shown up to most of the nation’s statehouses by midafternoon. In Florida, the FBI arrested one self-described “hardcore leftist” on Friday for allegedly attempting to recruit comrades to attack a proTrump protest in Tallahassee on Sunday. However, even if he hadn’t been arrested, he would have had no targets, as no protest materialized. President Trump has repeatedly called on his supporters to avoid violence, a call they appear to have heeded since the Capitol Hill riot. However, even if Biden’s inauguration passes peacefully, security at US legislatures could remain heightened for the foreseeable future. In Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced last week that security fencing and troop deployments around the US Capitol could be the “new normal” long after Inauguration Day.

Key Protection More Accessible as Organic Farms Grow in Numbers By Desert Star Staff Iowa is among the top states in the number of organic farms in operation, but producers have long struggled to obtain crop insurance that can better protect them from losses. A new initiative aims to help close these gaps. Last summer’s derecho storm left many Iowa farm fields flattened. Kate Hansen, the policy assistant at the Center for Rural Affairs, said these situations can be especially devastating for small to midsize producers who don’t have the right crop insurance that can soften the blow. She noted about a decade ago that there weren’t many coverage plans that matched up with their products when more organic farms came into existence. But that’s changed. “Now, there are over 80 certified organic crops that can be insured at higher organic prices,” Hansen explained. “And so, they’re just kind of more effectively insuring what they

have out there in the field.” Despite the expansion of coverage, Hansen acknowledged there’s still a disconnect in getting these farmers and ranchers to navigate newer plans. That leaves many organic crops under-protected. Her group is out with a new a resource guide that covers everything from contract prices to the claims process. The guide also features feedback from crop-insurance agents across the Midwest. Joshua Manske, an Iowa-based agent, said with the effects of climate change resulting in more extreme weather events, making connections with these producers can mitigate a lot of trouble. “You know, I can’t imagine somebody who’s dreamed of farming their whole life and worked hard every single day of their life to be able to do what they love... and some sort of event comes along and wipes out your crop,” Manske remarked.

CES 2021 ELECLEAN Disinfectant Recognized as an Innovative Technology

By Desert Star Staff The World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa has compiled a worldwide database of COVID-19 technological innovations to share information on technologies that have already made a difference in other parts of the world. Developed in Taiwan, ELECLEAN’s disinfectant solution has been recognized in the “Laboratory” category of innovations with the potential for adaptation and scaling in the fight against COVID-19. The World’s First Disinfectant Spray to Use Water as Its Single Reagent In the fight against COVID-19, alcohol is perhaps the most commonly utilized disinfectant and sterilization solution. But what if there was a way to achieve adequate disinfection with something even more familiar? Maybe something that comes from the turn of a faucet? Since 2016, Taiwanese startup ELECLEAN has produced disinfectant using water as its only reagent. Using nano-catalysis electrochemical technology, water is directly transformed into “reactive oxygen species” (ROS) such as hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide radicals. ROS effectively destroys viruses and bacteria by oxidation.

8

DesertSTAR

Delivered in the form of a portable and rechargeable device, ELECLEAN produces disinfectant from regular tap water in just 15 minutes at the touch of a button. Moreover, ELECLEAN is safe and eco-friendly. Upon destroying the targeted pathogens, ROS simply transforms back into the water. No chemical additives or preservatives are utilized throughout the process, which makes this disinfectant product non-toxic - unlike many traditional disinfectants. ELSE CLEAN has been certified by professional laboratories worldwide, including Chang Gung University, SGS, SNQ, and more. In particular, ELECLEAN has been verified as effective against pseudomonas aeruginosa, pneumococcus, H1N1, candida albicans, E. coli, staphylococcus aureus, salmonella, black mold, and more. A New Innovation for the Pandemic Era In August of this year, the startup launched a new product called ELECLEAN 360 in response to the pandemic. ELSE CLEAN 360 is an intelligent disinfectant station installed at entrances to buildings and other venues to provide full-body disinfection. The system effectively removes

viruses, bacteria, and odors from those walking through, significantly improving public health and safety in public spaces. ELSE CLEAN 360 has already been used for sanitation control of various venues and events, including the CHIMEI Museum, the National Library of Public Information’s Read Exposition, National Geographic’s 50th Anniversary of Earth Day Run, and more. Inspired by the Need for Clean Water After participating in January 20, 2021

various disaster relief programs in India and Southeast Asia, Dr. Chien-Hung Chen, Founder and CEO of ELECLEAN, found that clean water and disinfection were critical problems in need of solutions. Chen drew on his 13 years of water treatment research experience at the Material and Chemical Research Laboratory at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to invent a series of water purification modules to provide refugees with clean, potable water. After returning to Taiwan,

Chen founded ELECLEAN with the mission to become the world’s top-ranked professional disinfection appliance brand. In addition to ELECLEAN’s flagship disinfectant solution, our current product line also includes ELECLEAN plus+, ELECLEAN share, and ELECLEAN 360. It is expected that other products will be released, including ELECLEAN tissue and E-cube, soon. CES 2021 TTA-VR Pavilion: https://pse.is/393s2h PRNewswire SOURCE ELECLEAN www.desertstarweekly.com

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

Carey Mulligan Gives a Tour de Force Performance in “Promising Young Woman”

Historically, until recently, women who have been victims of sexual assault have not always come forward, and when they did, often, their complaints were filed away. The cinematic theme of women hell-bent on exacting revenge is not a unique one. A few of those films range from the light-hearted The First Wives Club to The Brave One, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Kill Bill, and SheDevil. In Man on Fire, starring Denzel Washington, Christopher Walken’s character says, “Revenge is a meal best served cold.” Although that revenge was not for sexual misconduct, it was nevertheless retaliation for the right reasons. You might be wondering what that has to do with Promising Young Woman, which earned multiple critics’ awards for both firsttime film director/writer Emerald Fennell and Carey Mulligan, who plays the lead role Cassandra (Cassie). She delivers an Oscarworthy, brilliant, profoundly layered characterization of a complex woman who waited for the right time to seek revenge. The film opens in a bar where people are dancing, nicely captured by cinematographer Benjamin Kračun. A group of young businessmen is having drinks and spot this beautiful young woman who appears to be very drunk. She has slumped down in her seat with her legs slightly apart, almost revealing her underwear. They joke about how easy it would be to take advantage of her. Jerry (Adam Brody) appears to be concerned about her safety and decides to talk to her. In a slurred speech,

she tells him that she’s ok and will be driving herself home. Jerry tells her that it would be safer for him to drive her home. At first, one might think this is a nice guy but wait. Once they’re in the car, as if she’s not drunk enough, he suggests that they stop at his place for a drink, to which she agrees. In short order, he attempts to rape her. In a split-second mercurial transition, she sits up straight, and in a sharp, sober, rational voice, says, “What are you trying to do?” We next see her walking with a bit of blood on her, but we never get to see exactly what happened. The next shot is in her bedroom, where she makes another tally mark in her scorekeeping notebook, which is filled with many entries. She still lives at home with her parents Stanley (Clancy Brown) and Susan (Jennifer Coolidge), who are very concerned that she doesn’t date or have friends. They think she should be on her own and for her birthday, give her a piece of luggage as a gift. When Cassie is not luring predators by night, she works in a coffee shop owned by Gail (Laverne Cox.) Ryan Cooper, an old med school classmate, well played by Bo Burnham, shows up in an unexpected encounter. He’s surprised to see Cassie and asks why she dropped out of school where she was at the top of her class and why she worked in a coffee shop. He realizes he was being rude and tells her she can spit in his coffee, which she does, and hands it to him. On the way out, he asks her for a date. The next day, Ryan returns to the shop

Carey Mulligan as ‘Cassandra’ is a quiet young woman by day with a different persona by night. Photo Courtesy of Focus Features and orders coffee, “But this time, without spit,” and asks her out again. She doesn’t answer but shows up at his hospital to say she would like to see him again but need to take it slow. Thus begins the development of a fun, loving, carefree relationship. Fennell’s carefully written script slowly unravels the tale of Cassie’s duplicitous life. She continues to lure men into her web, shocking them when she transitions from a falling down drunk to a sober woman threatening them for their potential sexual assault. This is a woman with an intricate, methodical plan. She is seeking revenge. As part of her plan, she calls Madison McPhee, an old classmate nicely played by Alison Brie. She invites her to lunch, and after finishing two bottles of wine, she brings up Nina Fisher’s name, her best friend since childhood who was raped by a medical student at a party. Madison says she has no idea what happened,

but knowing she was at the party, a horrific surprise awaits her drunken friend. Is this real, or is it designed to elicit fear? Cassie is obsessed with seeking retribution for her friend who committed suicide following the attack, and anyone remotely involved, directly or indirectly, is on Cassie’s hit list. The next person she confronts is Dean Elizabeth Walker (Connie Britton). Cassie tells her she wants to resume her studies and quite casually brings up Nina’s rape. At first, the dean doesn’t recall the incident, but her memory returns after a bit of prodding. Cassie reminds her that Al Monroe (Chris Lowell) raped Nina, but nothing was done about it. Citing all the complaints she receives, she defends herself, saying it’s usually “she said, he said.” Cassie quietly reminds her that she took Monroe’s side, believing him over Nina, a systemic failure in college rape cases. Cassie shocks the dean

in a chilling moment, informing her that she arranged for her young daughter to experience firsthand what it’s like to be molested. Is this real, or is it designed to elicit fear? Cassie is on fire and has one more act of retribution to complete. Her piece de resistance is reserved for the rapist Monroe, who is about to be married. His friends arrange a bachelor party. Cassie shows up as a nurse, and in keeping with Fennell’s unpredictable script, this spider is about to weave the biggest web of all with an unexpected denouement that lingered with me long after viewing the film. As I write this, the images are still dancing in my head.
