Story and Photos by Pat Krause The final day of the 60th anniversary of the Desert Classic crowned a new winner. Adam Long got his first PGA Tour to win in 6 starts by defeating Desert Classic Ambassador Phil Mickelson on the 18th green in front of thousands of golf fans. It was a 3-way tie coming into the 18th hole, Long, Mickelson and Hadwin all had 25 under. Hadwin had a lousy shot that took him out of the running. It came down to a final putt between Mickelson and Long. Mickelson had a long putt and missed by an inch.

Long had a short putt and put it in for the win. Fans were rooting for Mickelson as it would have been 15 years since his last victory here. Mickelson had crawled back from two behind in the last few holes to tie on 18. The winner won $1,062,000 from a purse of 5.9 Million dollars and a win in his resume. Second place went to Adam Hadwin and Phil Mickelson. Each would take home a big payday even if they didn’t win. Talor Gooch took 4th with a birdie on

PSIFF Closing Night

Alison McGirr, Director Bruce Beresford, Rachel Taylor, and Celia Massingham. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The PSIFF closed with a period film, Ladies in Black, by Director Bruce Beresford on Sunday night. The movie starts in 1959 Australia and is about a young girl that gets her first job at Goodes store. One older lady takes her under her wing to teach her about fashion and the role it plays with women. She shows her how to deal with wealthy women and her coworkers. This young girl plays her character very well. Julia

Ormond played the older lady. The other employees also have significant roles, and the fashions were exquisite for that period. Julia Ormond as the older woman teaches this young girl how to dress and helps her buy the dress she had wanted when she first started. The young girl grows up into a young woman before our eyes in this film. With schooling, she changes into a more sophisticated lady. The employees at Goodes

wear black during working hours, hence the name of the movie. Of course, it would not be a great film without some love interests involving the employees. There was a Q&A after the film. Goode’s employees in the movie, Rachael Taylor, Alison McGirr and Celia Massingham attended the film and the Q&A. These women were asked what was their favorite outfit in the movie. Each spoke about why they liked the dress they chose as their

favorite. The co-writer and producer, Sue Milliken, and Producer Allanah Zitserman along with the director Bruce Beresford were also answering questions at the Q&A. It surprises me that so many people stay for the Q&A and don’t rush off to the afterparty. The final after party was held at the Hilton Hotel on the upper floor. A DJ was playing good music, and the many food tables were filled with goodies. There was someone making cotton

candy while waiters walked around with more appetizers. It was beneficial as there were tables for seating and spaces to move around to talk to friends. The party was filled with happy filmgoers as they seemed to like this last film. This was the last hurrah for the PSIFF unless you consider that the Best of the Fest had movies playing in Palm Springs all day on Monday.

The special guest was Linda Hope, Daughter of Bob and Dolores Hope, who spoke so lovingly about her parents and especially about her mother. This night was about Dolores, so it was fitting she talked more about her than her Dad. She told how Dolores took great pride in the January 23, 2019

Dolores Hope building and took great pains to make sure it was built right. She was very fussy about that. Linda said her parents would be so proud that their dream became a reality and was smiling looking down from Heaven. Linda Hope told about how the Golf tournament came about with Bob Hope lending his name. She said he said, Delores, that it was her baby and she twisted arms and got their friends to get involved in the golf tournament. Bob got his

celebrity friends to play golf, and that made the golf tournament a big PGA event that just grew and grew. The Tournament has donated millions of dollars to local charities. LPGA pro-Shirley Spork told me that Dolores Hope gave the founders of the LPGA a Million dollars to help get it started. I heard Bob Hope won the Horatio Alger award along with friends Gene Autry, Gerald Ford and others. All philanthropists that believed in giving back. www.desertstarweekly.com

creating a health and wellness strategy, and evaluating relationships. Knowing who wish to share your time with is a key to happiness. Also necessary is the allocation of personal time, determining living arrangements, and recognizing the change in social rules. There is also the unfortunate, but a necessary, adjustment to the eventual death of loved ones. The life we lead is a result of the choices we make. The majority of successful retirees recognize the power of creating a realistic retirement vision and an action plan to achieve it. Armed with this mental model, they can make sound choices and progress toward their desired results. An excellent way to begin is by taking time to visualize what the word “retirement” means to you. What is it that attracts, scares, or excites you about this particular time of life? Next, write out a description of your imagined retirement life. Being as descriptive as possible is essential. What are you doing and what are you accomplishing? Vision yourself doing things that make you happy. What activities and hobbies will you enjoy? How will you manage your health and wealth? Who will be the professionals that you wish to

work with, you know? Imagine yourself in various ages of retirement. In your 90s and 100plus years, what would you like to have accomplished? What are you most proud of? What have you done that has brought happiness to you and others? What legacy will you leave behind? Once you have recorded a well thought out vision, share it with a partner or spouse, close friends and of course with your advisor. This process of sharing will provide different perspectives and help shape your final vision. Optimism is KEY throughout the retirement visioning process. It’s important to focus on the rewards of a balanced retirement, meditate on the feeling of being complete, enriched and financially secure. Retirement visions should be reviewed and rewritten as often as necessary until the idea feels right and is in line with your wants, needs, and beliefs. Meet with your advisor regularly to assess what is working and what is not. You may then make the required changes to meet your goals and expectations. As you enter the secondlongest phase in your life, take an informed, active role in getting it right. With

appropriate guidance and thoughtful planning, you will be able to enjoy life after work and relish it. For further help on retirement planning, you may contact Janice Gough at 760 251-7724 or Cell: (650) 200-8291 or Email Janice@ GoughFinancialSvcs.com.

Part III – Understanding How The Role Is DIFFERENT By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL All the knowledge and experience from the working world (“day job”) can actually hinder a volunteer’s effectiveness in the world of HOA governance if the differences between the two worlds are not understood. Outstanding directors have learned that much of what worked for them in their day job will likely work poorly in the context of board governance. The chain of command is completely different in a community association. In the workplace, there is usually a person who is the “big boss”, somebody who is your immediate supervisor, and someone who you supervise. In the association, no single person is in charge. Decisions are made by the board, so the chain of command is horizontal and not hierarchical. The president in a common interest development is not the “big boss.” The president has far less power in most nonprofit corporations since all important decisions are made by the board, and so the president’s vote is no more important than any other. In this very different

paradigm, the individual director typically has no personal power. Once directors embrace the framework of the board as decision-maker, they understand that they cannot make individual promises. This restraint can be very freeing since no individual is responsible for the association and its actions, as all decisions is made by board vote. So, when confronted at the pool or parking garage by homeowners demanding action, the director can truly say they can’t individually do anything and suggest the homeowner bring their concern to management or to a board meeting. Directors failing to adapt to the group decision-making process will often stray outside of corporate authority and are also prone to unilateral actions without waiting for input from their board colleagues. Such directors often view themselves as “action-oriented,” but their actions without board authority can be precipitous, create exposure to liability, and engender conflict with the other directors. The “Lone Ranger” in the HOA context is in great personal danger, since such a crusader is outside the protections of the corporate process and the Business Judgment Rule. A director’s role is in January 23, 2019

the title; A director directs. Directors are not normally required or expected to act. The board receives information and advice from many possible sources, and then responds to that information by directing the association manager, employees, and service providers to act. The best directors experience less stress, understanding that they are not called upon to do the work but rather to decide who will do it. Such directors are less likely to micromanage the association’s professional manager, if it has one. Superior directors allow, and insist that, the manager and service providers perform. Outstanding directors do not perform the work of a failing manager or service provider; but instead they find a new one when things are not working out. Healthy associations have

a healthy and orderly rotation of leadership, so be prepared to let someone else take a turn. Volunteer HOA service should not be a life sentence. Begin identifying and preparing your replacement on the board. Committees are a great place to identify people who have the interest and demonstrated commitment to the association and proper attitudes of service and governance. Don’t simply assume it always has to be you! Kelly G. By Desert Star Staff LAFAYETTE, Colo. – Moms in Colorado and across the nation are asking members of Congress to think twice before confirming Andrew Wheeler to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Wheeler, a former coalindustry lobbyist, made the case to U.S. senators on Wednesday that the EPA’s actions under the Trump administration show that regulations aren’t necessary to drive environmental progress. Mother of three Julie Piller of Lafayette attended the hearing, as a volunteer with the group Moms Clean Air Force. She says the EPA should be taking action to improve air quality standards, not rolling them back. “We need somebody that will boldly and honestly highlight what the real concerns of our air quality are, and what health dangers are, and move to boldly

address them,” says Piller. The Trump administration’s EPA has worked to roll back numerous protections, including fuel efficiency and emissions standards for cars, and limits to mercury pollution from coal-fired power plants. Wheeler defended the EPA’s work, arguing that fewer standards will keep vehicles affordable. He said protecting health and the environment would be his most important responsibility. Under Wheeler as acting chief, the EPA opened the door for legal challenges to the Mercury and Air Toxics Standard by revoking the agency’s determination that it’s “appropriate and necessary.” Piller notes mercury affects brain development in infants, which impacts a child’s ability to walk, talk and read. While Wheeler agreed it wouldn’t make sense to remove scrubbers already installed at some power plants

By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – “One suicide death is too many,” says Scott Ridgway, executive director of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. The public-private partnership responsible for reporting findings cites an almost 55 percent increase in suicides among children ages 10 to 17 in the last three years. The new report, in collaboration with the Tennessee Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control, analyzes suicide demographics to share with mental-health professionals, lawmakers and the public.

While there’s no single reason for a person taking their own life, Ridgway says children’s exposure to “mature concepts” should be a concern. “We’re seeing younger kids think about suicide and part of that is, is that they are exposed to social media, they are watching stuff on TV,” says Ridgway. “There’s a lot more exposure.” Experts say it’s unclear how big a role social media plays in suicide attempts, but a 2016 study ties online bullying to increased anxiety in young adults. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is open 24 hours a day, at 800-273-8255.

requests to expand access to early learning. Newsom is proposing to expand pre-

kindergarten programs to all low-income 4-year-olds in the state within three years. Kim Pattillo Brownson, vice president for policy and strategy at First Five LA, said other states that have put money into pre-K find that the programs show strong return on investment almost immediately. “And they’re seeing tremendous gains both in terms of academic achievement,” she said, “but also in terms of lesser rates of special ed in the K-12 system, and a lesser incidence of children being held back.” Pattillo Brownson said studies have shown that too many lower-income children are mistakenly placed in special education when they just haven’t had enough exposure to reading and writing. The budget also proposes $750

million for building new classrooms so more school districts have the facilities to offer full-day kindergarten. In his budget announcement, Newsom noted that about 25 percent of all school districts in California only offer a half-day kindergarten program, which can be difficult for working parents. Pattillo Brownson said the kids need the extra hours of instruction. “A part-day program is not sufficient to get children ready to read with our new and more advanced standards,” she said. Newsom’s proposal also includes new money for screening children for trauma or developmental delays, and seeks to expand home visitation programs for lowincome parents with newborns. The budget proposal is online at ebudget.ca.gov.

Colorado Moms Weigh In on Trump’s EPA Nominee

Andrew Wheeler, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the EPA, told senators that climate change is real and a global problem, but doesn’t view it as a crisis that must be addressed in an aggressive way. (USDA) to reduce mercury emissions, Piller was not convinced. “But if you’re not enforcing it, or you’re allowing new plants to be built without that same technology, then you really are going to

harm any progress that has been made,” says Piller. Companies have invested $18 billion to meet the current standard, and according to the Edison Electric Institute, pollution has dropped

by almost 90 percent. In addition to mercury, coalfired power plants release other toxins, including arsenic, benzene, cadmium, formaldehyde and lead.

Ridgway says helping to identify the root causes of kids’ anxiety could be the key to preventing suicide. His organization is offering free training for community, faith and civic groups focused on listening and compassion. “If they’re dealing with some stress in their life, instead of us just saying, ‘Oh everyone’s dealing with that,’ what we need to do is kind of find out what’s the root of what’s going on in that child’s life,” says Ridgway. He adds for every number and rate in the “2019 Status of Suicide in Tennessee” report, a family member, loved one, neighbor, co-worker or friend

left behind is also suffering. Ridgway says mentalhealth professionals no longer believe that people who talk about considering suicide aren’t “truly serious” or are just trying to get attention. He says it’s now clear that these cases should be referred to professionals. “Take every sign seriously when it relates to suicide,” says

Ridgway. “So, when a child says, ‘I am thinking about killing myself,’ instead of them saying that they’re ‘attention seeking,’ we really need to focus on yes, they’re seeking your attention.” Every day, three Tennesseans take their own lives. For help or to learn more about the suicide prevention training, look online at ‘tspn.org.’

Dems Slog Through Iowa on Path to White House

By Desert Star Staff SIOUX CITY, Iowa – New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will be in Iowa this weekend, the latest Democratic 2020 presidential candidate testing the waters where the nation’s first caucuses are held. Gillibrand will start her tour in the western corner of the state, much like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., did last weekend. Iowa State University economist Dave Swenson says because the eastern half of Iowa is already solidly blue, Democratic hopefuls are smart to reach out to voters in western Iowa, which is more rural and more Republican. “They’re somewhat behind the progressive growth curve in terms of economics, lifetime opportunities,” says Swenson. “But what kind of message can you bring to some farmers? Farmers

are always going to be conservative, but to some farmers that might resonate. What kind of message can you bring to shopkeepers?” While Iowa voted for Barack Obama in 2012, President Donald Trump won the 2016 election in the state by nearly 10 percentage points over Hillary Clinton. Iowa’s loss of manufacturing jobs and associated labor unions has meant deeper political divisions geographically than in earlier decades, according to Swenson. That’s because the state’s young adults now find more lucrative jobs in metro areas like Des Moines, Ames, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. So, he says rural voters are generally older and more conservative. “Distribution of the population changes where you have, increasingly, older

forward one-sided and ineffective remedies.” “It was the President who single-handedly took away DACA and TPS protections in the first place – offering some protections back in exchange for the wall is not a compromise but more hostage taking,” he stated. While the harsh rebuke from the Democrats was

rather predictable, there have been some dissenting voices among hardline conservatives, though congressional Republicans overwhelmingly sided with Trump. Rep. Steve King (RIA), who drew bipartisan condemnation over “racist” white supremacy comments on a radio show, appeared to oppose Trump’s proposal, tweeting “NO AMNESTY 4 a wall!” while calling a concrete border wall, a design that Trump no longer advocates, “a monument” to US sovereignty. The proposal also did not strike a chord with prominent conservative commentator Ann Coulter, a fervent border wall advocate who the left-wing media is blaming for goading Trump into the government shutdown in the first place. “Trump proposes amnesty. We voted for Trump and got Jeb!” Coulter tweeted, referring to former presidential candidate Jeb Bush, who has previously criticized Trump’s border policy as “heartless.”

The majority of Republicans sided with the president, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who floated a similar proposal himself, and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT). The latter, despite being at odds with Trump, called it a “reasonable, good faith proposal that will reopen the government and help secure the border.” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) chastised the Democratic opposition to the proposal as”completely irrational obstructionism,” while Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) called the compromise “a sign of strength” rather than weakness. Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) was also on board, calling it a “reasonable proposal,” as was Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), who described it as a “sensible compromise.” Some 800,000 government employees have not seen paychecks or have been furloughed for almost a month now with the shutdown hitting its 29th day.

Democrats reject Trump shutdown tradeoff in advance, GOP shows united front

By Desert Star Staff Democrats are up in arms over US President Donald Trump’s proposal to fund a border wall in exchange for protection for DACA recipients and TPS immigrants, denouncing it as a one-sided non-starter. Democrats began shredding Trump’s compromise proposal even before he went public with his “major announcement.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi put out a lengthy statement, calling it “a nonstarter” some five minutes before Trump was to address the nation. Pelosi, basing her statement on “initial reports” about Trump’s plan, said it represents “a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer echoed her stance shortly after Trump laid out the details of his plan to reopen the government, now almost a month in shutdown. Trump said that he was offering a “common-sense www.desertstarweekly.com

compromise” by proposing three years of legislative relief for 750,000 DACA recipients, young adults who illegally arrived in the US as children, and a three-year extension of stay for 300,000 migrants with temporary protected status. Apart from the $5.7bn wall, the proposal also included a host of measures to beef up border security and fend off drug traffickers, such as recruiting an additional 2,750 border agents and allocating $800mn in urgent humanitarian assistance, and $805mn to combat drug trafficking. Under the plan, the government would also hire 750 more immigration judges to better cope with massive backlogs. Helping DACA recipients is one of the main focal points for the Democratic Party’s pushback against Trump. But unlike in the Trump deal, they want wide-ranging amnesty for illegal child arrivals, rather than temporary relief. Blasting the proposal, Schumer said that Trump “keeps putting

Drug Price Transparency Bill Coming to Wash. Legislature

companies often have little competition. Dr. David Grossman, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente, said patients sometimes ask if they can split pills in half to make them last longer. “We are constantly trying to make sure that our members are not spending more than they need to,” Grossman said. “But when you have a limited choice of drugs available and there’s monopolies going on, it’s kind of tough sometimes to be able to essentially promise a patient that you can provide a truly affordable drug.” Grossman said rising drug costs are making health care unaffordable for some patients. The pricing transparency bill would require drug companies to justify price increases and health plan purchasers to report how drug spending contributes to overall healthcare spending and premiums.

Sharon Burke, director of clinical pharmacy services at Kaiser Permanente, said it isn’t just specialty drugs going up in price. “The one thing that’s also concerning is medications that have been on the market for a long period of time,” Burke said. “We continue to see price increases from manufacturers, so the drug price transparency bill will help give us some visibility into the why.” Grossman said more transparency equals more accountability. “You can’t solve what you can’t track,” Grossman said. “So, by putting these numbers out there and putting some sunlight on them, we hope that all sectors of health care and especially patients will have a better understanding of why pharmaceutical companies are increasing the cost of their drugs so fast.”

By Desert Star Staff OLYMPIA, Wash. — Could 2019 be the year Washington state lawmakers tackle the rising cost of prescription

By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Stress can affect a person’s mental and physical health in many ways, and as the government shutdown keeps many in financial stress, a new study shows fluctuating personal income may be associated with an increased risk of heart disease. According to research in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation, sudden drops in personal income during adulthood nearly double the risk of death, and more than double the risk for heart disease. Although the study is observational and not designed to prove cause and effect, cardiologist Dr. Reggie Robinson with MedStar Cardiology Associates says it acknowledges the social determinants of health, rather than focusing on diet and exercise.

“But there are a lot of social factors,” says Robinson, “like this income volatility and poverty, and loss of job (that) can play a huge role on long-term health outcomes, which showed in this study.” The study began in 1990 tracking nearly 4,000 participants in cities across the country between ages 23 and 35. The research also found women and African Americans are more likely to experience high income volatility and income drops than white men. Even though the research looked at a younger population, Robinson says the conclusions can easily apply to other age groups – especially considering that as people get older, they develop more risk factors, many of which can be triggered by worrying too much. “That acid build up in the stomach from all the stress that you may have may lead

to potentially increasing your risk of having ulcers and inflammation in the stomach or esophagus,” says Robinson. “It’s something that’s probably under-appreciated, how

work-life stress can impact your health.” While it’s easier said than done, Robinson recommends finding time to exercise or meditate, discuss issues with friends

and just take a deep breath from time to time to reduce stress. He recommends trying these natural measures before pursuing any that involve drugs.

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Good-government groups are speaking out on this ninth anniversary of the Citizens United decisionby the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2010, the court upheld the idea that corporations have the same rights as individuals, and that money they spend on political campaigns is a form of protected free speech. That opened the door for political action committees to take in millions without having to report the donors. Sheila Krumholz, executive director at the Center for

Responsive Politics, said the current system means billionaires, corporations, unions and even foreign interests can secretly funnel money into elections. “The voters will not have critical information to help them judge the credibility of the messages that they’re being barraged with,” Krumholz said. “And of course, a candidate will know who to be beholden to.” According to the website OpenSecrets.org, spending by outside groups not affiliated with the candidates or campaigns rose from 9 percent in 2010 to about

22 percent in 2016. Another group, Move to Amend, backs a constitutional amendment to, in effect, reverse the Citizens United decision. So far, 19 state legislatures have passed resolutions in support of such a move, including California. But that’s far short of the two-thirds of states that would be necessary. The California Legislature did pass a bill in 2017 requiring greater disclosure of donors. Krumholz added some national groups are now making some of their donor’s public. “The growth in partially-

disclosing groups was a big theme this past cycle, which is just as, if not more, troubling,” she said. “Because these groups have the facade of transparency but, in the case of many of their biggest donors, we still don’t know the original source of the money.” According to a 2018 report

from Issue One, which calls itself a “cross-partisan political reform group,” political action committees that don’t disclose all their donors spent more than $800 million on campaigns between 2010 and 2016. Just 15 groups spent 75 percent of that money - in most cases, to support conservative causes.

Women’s Marches in Reno, Carson City

The Women’s March in January 2018 drew large crowds to Reno. (Phil Roeder/Flickr) By Desert Star Staff RENO, Nev. – Women’s marched in Reno and Carson City, along with hundreds of other towns across the country – including a massive event in Washington, DC. This is the third annual

Women’s March, which started in 2017 on the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, an event that stands as the largest protest in American history. The so-called “blue wave” of 2018 swept record

numbers of Democrats, many of them women, into political power in the Silver State. So, Matthew Fonken, a lead organizer of the Reno Women’s March, says he expects big changes during the new legislative session,

which starts February 4. “There is so much we can accomplish with the new leadership down in Carson City,” says Fonken. “We’re very excited to see what they bring, especially with a woman majority in the Legislature.” The Reno Women’s March started at 11 a.m. at the Reno Arch. The Carson City event started at the Capitol Building at 2 p.m. The Las Vegas Women’s March was canceled due to “administrative problems,” according to the organizers’ Facebook page. But the group is still active and will sponsor an event to promote Medicare for All at the Clark County Library on February 9th. Fonken says he’d like to see progress on reproductive rights, sex education and HIVAIDS prevention, as well as on gun violence measures,

such as universal background checks. But he says the big priority is the move toward universal health care. “In 2017, we were able to pass the ‘Medicaid for All’ – and that was vetoed by our governor, Brian Sandoval, at the time,” says Fonken. “So, I think that there’s an opportunity this time around for us to expand healthcare rights to the state of Nevada with the leadership that we have in place. “ March organizers say they’re proud that in Congress, both of Nevada’s senators and two of its four representatives are now Democratic women – lawmakers who have promised to thwart any further attempts to weaken the Affordable Care Act.

Watch out, Trump? California Sen. Kamala Harris announces presidential run By Desert Star Staff California Senator Kamala Harris has announced her candidacy for president with a pledge to “bring our voices together.” The first-term senator has been billed as one of the Democrats’ best chances for defeating Trump in 2020. Harris, who served as California’s attorney general before joining the Senate, made her longanticipated announcement on Monday during an appearance on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America.’ “I love my country. And this is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are,” she said on the program. Lamenting that Washington’s “moral authority” in the world has suffered, she emphasized that national security would be among her top priorities as president. “I’m a career prosecutor. My entire career has been focused on keeping people safe. It is probably one of the things that motivates me more than anything else.” Harris, who is AfricanAmerican, also said she was “honored” to time her announcement to coincide with Martin Luther King Jr Day. A video announcing a formal campaign launch on January 27 in Oakland, California presents Harris as a

champion of “decency, equality, freedom and democracy.” Harris is expected to face off in the primaries against several of her colleagues. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York have both launched exploratory committees, although they’ve yet to formally announce their candidacies. Her announcement has been described as “historic” by Vox, with many Twitter pundits seemingly in agreement. Harris has already been pegged as a frontrunner in what will likely be a contentious current president. According Twitter engagement of the primary contest. Harris has come under fire from progressives for her record as California’s attorney general. Redford Charms in “The Old Man & the Gun” on DVD If you haven’t seen “The Old Man With a Gun,” rumored to be Robert Redford’s final screen role, you can enjoy it now on DVD. The film, written and directed by David Lowery (“A Ghost Story” and Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon”), is based on a real-life bank robber, Forrest Tucker, whose final bank heist and arrest came just before his 79th birthday. Robbing banks was something he truly enjoyed doing and according to Tucker, “It wasn’t to make a living, it was to live a life.” Lowery was inspired to write the film after reading journalist David Grann’s feature on Tucker in the New Yorker. Unfortunately, Tucker died in 2004, so he never got to see this charming movie “The Old Man with a Gun” based on his criminal escapes. The movie (described in the opening credits as mostly true) begins as Forrest enters a bank and robs it. His only

disguise is a fake mustache which he removes as he speeds away in his getaway car. The police follow in hot pursuit, but he cleverly eludes them by stopping to help a lady in distress (Sissy Spacek) who is having car problems. Later they go to a nearby diner for coffee to unwind. They seem to get along quite well as she tells him she is a widow who lives on a farm with horses and he fibs, saying he is a salesman. At one point in their comfortable relationship, he tells her he is a bank robber, and she laughs in disbelief. He smiles back, saying it was just a joke to see how she would react. Next, he robs a bank in Dallas along with his cohorts (Danny Glover and Tom Waits). As fate would have it, police detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck) and his young son are also in the bank at the time of the heist. After this

embarrassing incident Hunt is determined to be the one who captures Forrest, but ironically as he tries to track down the clever old bank robber, he becomes fond of him. “The Old Man & the Gun,” from 20th Century Fox, is

rated PG-13 for brief strong language. Running time is 1 hour, 33 minutes. Now on Blu-ray and DVD, “The Old Man & the Gun” contains director’s commentary and unique features that include an interview with real-life police

officer John Hunt, played by Ben Affleck in the movie. If you want to find out even more about this genial bank robber, check him out on Google. I did and discovered how closely the film followed his life and his crime career.

Broadway Legend Carol Channing Dead at 97

Photo by Pat Krause NBC PS News Staff Actress Carol Channing died of natural causes early Tuesday morning at her home in Rancho Mirage after a legendary Broadway and television career spanning decades. She was 97. Publicist B. Harlan

Boll said Channing died of natural causes at 12:31 a.m. She had suffered two strokes in the past year. “It is with extreme heartache, that I have to announce the passing of an original industry pioneer, legend and icon — Miss

NBC PS News Staff UCLA Bruin Katelyn Ohashi put together a showstopping floor routine Saturday in Anaheim, and video of the performance was viewed over 9 million times within 24 hours of being posted, with even Sen. Kamala Harris posting the performance on her Twitter. “This is fantastic. Congratulations,” Harris said to the 20-year-old on the social media platform, with the gymnast responding by telling the senator from the

great state of California, “I got you with tickets to any time!!” Ohashi, the 2018 NCAA floor champion, earned a perfect score from the judges for her energetic and crowd-energizing routine. The Bruin danced, jumped, tumbled and split to sounds heavily influenced by Michael Jackson, but the soundtrack of the routine was probably best described as the constant cheers from the crowd on hand. Ohashi appeared to

Carol Channing,” Boll said. “I admired her before I met her, and have loved her since the day she stepped — or fell, rather — into my life. It is so very hard to see the final curtain lower on a woman who has been a daily part of my life for more than a third of it.” Channing may have been best known for starring in more than 5,000 performance of “Hello Dolly!” — Both on Broadway and elsewhere. She got her start in the 1949 Broadway play “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” A devout Christian Scientist, Channing prided herself on never needing an understudy to cover any of her thousands of performances — except once, when food poisoning kept her from doing Dolly!’s Act II in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She successfully battled ovarian cancer in the 1970s bit did not talk about it for years. Channing, an only child, was born in Seattle Jan. 31, 19-21. Her father, newspaper editor George Channing, relocated the family to San Francisco for his work. Channing joined the high school debating team and

later said her interest in theater developed from her mother Adelaide taking her backstage to help distribute Christian Science literature to actors. As a result, she said, she came to equate the theater with church. In her 2002 memoir Just Lucky I Guess, Channing wrote that when she was 16, her mother confided that George Channing’s mother was African American. She later reported that her mother was Jewish. After dropping out of college in Vermont, Channing, then modeling as well as acting, visited booking offices in New York and Los Angeles, but largely to no avail. That changed forever when author Anita Loos saw her in the revue “Lend An Ear” and suggested Channing be cast as the gold-digging 1920s heroine Lorelei Lee in the musical adaptation of Loos’ novel, Gentleman Prefer Blondes. The show opened in 1949. It gave Channing a lifelong theme song: “Diamonds Are a Girl*s Best Friend.’ But it was as the meddling 1890s matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi that greatly raised Channing’s

entertainment profile. The show, based on Thorton Wilder’s The Matchmaker, opened Jan. 16, 1964. Channing was nominated for an Academy Award in 1968 for Best Supporting Actress in “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Feb. 8, 1960. The star is located at 6233 Hollywood Blvd. Channing received a Tony Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 for her work with the AIDS and Actors’ Fund. Channing was married four times. She retired to California with her fourth husband, childhood sweetheart Harry Kullijian, whom Channing wed in 2003 when she was 82. They created a foundation to promote the teaching of the arts in California schools. Kullijian died in 2011. Channing is survived by a son from her second marriage to football player Alexander Carson. Funeral plans were not immediately announced. Source: NBC Palm Springs

60th Anniversary PGA Desert Classic 2019

Phil Mickelson. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 60th anniversary PGA Desert Classic started the tournament with an hour-long fog delay. Rain is not a typical problem in the Desert. Then it began to sprinkle which lasted all morning. Rain does not stop a golf tournament. The golfers were all eager to get this first of the year PGA golf tournament underway. The fog or the rain did not diminish the crowds. Golf fans wanted to watch the number 1 player, Justin Rose and fan favorite and Host again this year, Phil Mickelson.

I talked with one excited fan when she was so eager to tell me that Phil Mickelson had shaken her hand. Host Phil Mickelson said he loves to start the year at this tournament. It has excellent courses, great weather, practice facilities, and he likes to get back to the Desert. The courses are in perfect condition, and the golf pros love that. There was a large gallery following both Rose and Mickelson. The new kid on the block that got an exemption was Charlie Reiter, who played

very well and was so excited to be back in the hunt with the Pros. On the first day, Phil Mickelson almost shot the coveted 59. He was playing well and thought he might have a chance at that number. He fell short by only one stroke with a 60. He still had a 2 point lead going into Sundays Final. There are more TOP PGA players in the field this year. Justin Rose is the first Number One to play in the Classic, so I was told. Last years winner, Jon Rahm, was going to try to make it a repeat this year

but was battling the effects of the flu. Fans get a lot for their money. There are more open to the public tents, open seating and pavilions this year. There was the Military Outpost by the 18th for Veterans, First Responders and their families with complimentary food and refreshments and the Michelob Ultra tent where beers were 1/2 price for Birdies on the 16th hole. There was the Casamigos Club 17 on the 17th and Albertson’s Vons Fan Pavilion on the 18th where fans could sit and watch

other things to offer besides great golf, fabulous foods, open public areas, and evening concerts. On Sunday, partnering with The First Tee, held a driving range event for kids 15 and younger. Each kid walked away with a gift for being there. There was another event where a PGA tour Pro gave tips on golf. The excitement for the whole family and devoted golf fans was always at a high at this

tournament. This tournament sometimes gives a young player a chance to win and

beat the big-name pros. The Desert Classic also chose three iconic people that were instrumental in making this tournament one of the best. Bob Hope lent his name early on and got his friends to play in the sport that made it grow into what it is today. Bob Hope played in the tournament with fellow celebrities each year until his health faded. Who else could get three Presidents to come and play in a tournament? Arnold Palmer won many times here and always had an Arnie’s Army, following him. He was even Host at the Desert Classics 50th anniversary. Palmer was a big name in golf with his fans also after he was not in the running to win. The one who started the tournament and made it grow was Ernie Dunlevie. His expertise and

the play on the final hole. Entertainment was again a big hit with Sammy Hagar and The Circle playing on Friday night and Bad Company on Saturday night that was all part of the daily ticket. The PGA is trying to make the tournament a more fan and family event to draw crowds. The ticket price is low, $30 daily that entitles the ticket holder to the golf and the concerts. dedication were ever present over the years. A great tribute to these three men. It was announced that the tournament would give one million five hundred thousand dollars to local charities. The competition and its foundation have provided over 60 million dollars in the 60 years since it started. That’s one million per year. I wonder if any other tournament could say the same. This tournament is unique in that way. Bob Hope and the PGA always wanted to give back to charities, and this tournament has made that come true. Everyone is hoping. Workday will come back as host. The Berger Foundation sponsored the Pro-am dinner and both concerts. Thanks a lot go to the Berger foundation for their support at this tournament and all over the Desert.

Neil Simon is still relevant with Brighton Beach Memoirs at IPAC

Photo by Paul Hayashi Photography By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association One of the enduring joys of seeing Neil Simon plays even 40 years after being written, is they’re still relevant when it comes to observing the foibles and folly of humans as viewed through the lens of America’s late comic genius playwright. Simon was a big family oriented playwright. He wrote mostly about what he knew best – working class American immigrant families, which back then in the 1930’s, most families had immigrant roots and stories. Simon’s plays were always up-beat. Never depressing. And he infused all his work with comedy. If people laughed with his characters, not at them, then he felt there was hope that things would get better for everyone. And America of the 1930’s, deep in the Great Depression, needed all the comedy help it could find. “Brighton Beach Memoirs” now on the stage of Desert Theatreworks, located in the Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC) in Indio,

CA is producing the first play in Simon’s “Eugene Trilogies”. “Memoirs” was written in 1983, followed by “Biloxi Blues” in 1985, and the last of the “Eugene Trilogies” was written in 1986. This poignant comedy is lovingly and sensitively directed Rebecca Havely. This semiautobiographical comedy explores life in the Jack and Kate Jerome household along with their 19-year-old son Stanley (Lee Padick) and 14-year-old Eugene (Angus Feath), a dreamer and a budding writer who plays Eugene, as well as the narrator who keep’s a diary. Eugene’s entries help the audience keep up to date with his keen observations and comical comments concerning the jam-packed Jerome household in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach section. Eugene has just experienced puberty and is now eager for larger adventures. Everything revolves around family. Beginning with his ailing, strict, father Jack (Stephen Blackwell), his morose older brother Stanley (Lee Padick) and

his relationship with his two teenage female cousins: older Nora (Bella Oden), and asthma suffering, young Laurie (Cameron Trubee), and their widowed mother Blanche wonderfully and sensitively played by Leanna Rodgers. It may be Eugene’s story but as they say it takes a close-knit family village to grow up back in the 1930’s as well as it takes today.

The play is a veritable Neil Simon gold mine of witty dialogue and poignant stage moments. It boasts a nicely nuanced and grounded performance by Ms. Ryan, as the nurturing earth mother Kate Jerome. Kate is the glue that holds the Jerome family together during the trying economic and social times of pre-World War II America. As was common in the days of the Great Depression, families who had a home or a spare room took in relatives and extended family members. Growing up in a small or cramped house, however, left precious little space for privacy for sexually awakening 14-year-old Eugene. “Brighton Beach Memoirs” is an American story that has been replicated all over the country. It’s just the family names and their ethnicity that has changed. Everyone has contributed to what the country has become and what it stands for today – a beacon for freedom and democracy for all. Rousing Songcraft Via New Releases

A trio of discs celebrating the ever-growing legacy of Big Star and that band’s late frontman Alex Chilton, as well as a new LP from Southern California songstress Alice Wallace highlight my latest round of recommended new listens. Artist: Big Star Title: Live on WLIR (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Replacements, R.E.M., Big Star Tell me more: Captured in the wake of the release of their second album, 1974’s brilliant “Radio City,” Big Star’s performance featured on “Live on WLIR” is essential listening for fans of the legendary Memphis band. The 15-track set recorded on New York radio station WLIR-FM features singer-guitarist Alex Chilton, drummer-vocalist Jody Stephens and bassist John Lightman performing many of Big Star’s most beloved original songs as well as an acoustic cover of Loudon Wainwright

III’s “Motel Blues” and a short on-air interview. Although the radio broadcast was originally released as “Live” in 1992, the recording has now been restored and remastered as both a single audio CD or double LP release. Highlights on “Live on WLIR” include the shimmering “September Gurls,” the melodic rockers “Way Out West” and “In The Street,” and the acoustic “Thirteen” (the latter one of several cuts that Chilton performs solo). The collection has new, updated liner notes from Memphis writer Robert Gordon (a Grammy winner for his essay on the 2010 Big Star box set “Keep an Eye on the Sky”) as well as a new interview with John Lightman conducted by Chris Bell biographer Rich Tupica. third act is celebrated on several new releases coming in February 2019, including “From Memphis to New Orleans.” Having found fame during his teens as lead singer of The Box Tops and cult acclaim in his twenties leading Big Star, Alex Chilton explored his Southern roots when he emerged from a self-imposed exile in the 1980s. The material featured on “From Memphis to New Orleans” is loose and authentic, showcasing a more relaxed Chilton than the intense personality showcased on Big Star’s seminal discs. “Paradise” (with its late ‘50s-flavored Buddy Holly stylings), the soulful New Orleans-minded “Underclass” and “Make A Little Love,” tuneful “Let Me Get Close To You,” and Beach Boys-mining “Little GTO” reflect the joyful spirit of this period in Chilton’s career. You might like if you enjoy: Big Star, Jonathan Butler Tell me more: The second of two Alex Chilton releases set for release by Bar/ None Records in February, “Songs From Robin Hood Lane” collects four previously unreleased performances as well as rare tracks and recordings long out of print. The dozen-song title finds Chilton offering up his emotional takes on jazz-styled classics ranging from “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying” and “My Baby Just Cares For Me” to “All Of You” and “Time After Time.” A version of the American Songbook classic “Save Your Love For Me” is especially poignant. multi-platinum selling singersongwriter Dean Lewis releases his brand-new single ‘7 Minutes’, a further taste of what’s to come from his forthcoming debut album. Dean is also set to make his debut performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show next Wednesday, Jan. 23. Building from a simple acoustic refrain into a surprisingly upbeat anthem, ‘7 Minutes’ was conceived in a London taxi after a disagreement with a girl. “The song is about meeting someone,” Dean says, “making memories and then feeling regret.” Many artists have explored the pain of lost love, but few have written about those first few moments of heartbreak when your head is spinning, and the gravity of the situation is dawning. Recorded at The Barn Studio

in London with producers Edd Holloway and Nick Atkinson -with whom Lewis worked on ‘Waves’ and ‘Be Alright’- ‘7 Minutes’ has already become a fan favorite with Lewis performing it live during his recent sold out headline shows across the world. Now with over a billion streams of his music globally and being named Billboard’s “Chart-Breaker” in October, Dean has topped local and international charts with ‘Be Alright.’ Achieving GOLD certification by RIAA in the US in December, ‘Be Alright’ is still charging up the charts hitting Top 40 at Billboard, headed Top 20 at Top 40, and Top 10 at Hot AC. The track is also the #2 greatest gainer at both Hot AC and AC radio formats and has just debuted Top 20 at AC coming in as the #1 most added this week. Last month Dean

2019. An album that combines the best of contemporary Americana and modern country music styles, the 10-track album should further introduce the emerging artist to a wider audience. Wallace has an emotive and dazzling soprano voice to be sure (just listen to her voice soar in the final moments of “Desert Rose” and artfully again in “Top of the World”) but it is the way she wraps her musical talents around persuasive songs often directed at issues of female empowerment and life in Southern California that elevate the soaring soundscapes even higher. Every song on “Into The Blue” is a great one with the tracks resonating with each listen; indeed residents of wildfire-ravaged Southern California will relate to the timely “Santa Ana Winds” while everyone will appreciate universal themes explored in “The Lonely Talking,” “The Same Old Song” and “Top of the World.” Information: AliceWallaceMusic.com.

World reacts to ‘Greek God’ Tsitsipas’ win over Federer at Aus Open By Desert Star Staff The tennis world has been waxing lyrical about the latest star to emerge from the ongoing Australian Open 2019, hailing Stefanos Tsitsipas as a ‘future world number 1’ following his fourth-round victory over legend Roger Federer. World number 15 Tsitsipas battled past reigning champ Federer 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 in their fourth-round match at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday to become the first Greek player ever to reach the quarter finals of a Grand Slam. Tennis fans all over the world have lauded Tsitsipas for his strong showing at such a young age against perhaps the

greatest to ever play the game. Some likened the victory to a ‘changing of the guard’ type moment similar to Federer’s own victory over Pete Sampras, aged just 19, to end ‘Pistol’ Pete’s 31-match Wimbledon win streak in 2001. Others, including Australian tennis star and Wimbledon winner Pat Cash went further and predicted Tsitsipas - who was also called a ‘Greek God’ - will follow in the footsteps of his vanquished opponent by ascending to the world number one spot. There is already a noted rivalry between Tsitsipas and German ATP Finals he semi-final of the year-end winner Alexander Zverev, tournament on his way to who also beat Federer int lifting the trophy. The two,

who both have Russian roots, have battled it out on the Junior Circuit and represent

two of the leading lights of tennis’ ‘next generation’.

Tolerance Education Center Participates in Worldwide Holocaust Remembrance Event By Desert Star Staff On January 27, 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Russian Red Army. In 2005 the UN designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, urging states to honor the six million Jewish victims and millions of other victims of Nazism and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides. On January 27, 2019, at 11:00 AM, Rancho Mirage’s Tolerance Education Center will be part of an unprecedented global event by screening the film ‘Who Will Write Our History’. This will take place simultaneously in more than 250 venues in 41 countries. The film recounts a story of Nazi resistance.

In 1940 German authorities established the Warsaw Ghetto, the largest ghetto in Nazi occupied Europe. It was surrounded by a 10 feet high wall topped with barbed wire. Over 400,000 Jews were imprisoned at an area of 1.3 square miles, surviving on meager food rations. From here Jews were deported to Nazi concentration camps and mass-killing centers. A secret band of journalists, scholars and community leaders decided to fight back. Known by the code name Oneg Shabbat (Joy of the Sabbath), this clandestine group vowed to defeat Nazi lies and propaganda not with guns or fists but with pen and paper. For three years they recorded eyewitness accounts, sealing them in containers and burying

f the crew is coming over to root for your favorite team, it may be time to spice up the menu. Whether you’re hosting the weekend get-together or watching the game after work, switch up your typical spread and serve something new to leave your guests cheering for more. When it comes to choosing an ingredient that can lend a winning assist to nearly any dish and score you some major points, look no further than California Ripe Olives. Variety is key when mapping out food for a crowd, regardless of the event. Plan on serving one main course

and two sides, and consider no-fuss options like chips and dips. If there are kids in attendance, make sure there is something neutral for even the pickiest eaters to snack on. However, try your best to avoid anything that needs a knife and fork to eat – finger foods typically work best when the game is on and conversation is flowing. The mild and unique taste of California Ripe Olives lends itself well to many different flavor pairings, such as these recipes for Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Peach-Olive Jam, Easy Olive Bread and Sun-Dried Tomato and Olive Tapenade. Whether your guests are fans of spicy, mild,

In large, high-sided saute pan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Season pork with salt and pepper, to taste, and cook in pan 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Stir in garlic and continue cooking 3-5 minutes. Pour in chicken broth, peaches and chili powder; bring to boil. Cover loosely with foil and bake in oven 2 hours. With slotted spoon, carefully remove peaches and transfer to small mixing bowl. Mix olives and mustard with peaches; set aside. Continue to cook pork in oven 30-60 minutes until fork tender. Allow to cool slightly then shred by pulling apart with fork. Assemble sandwiches by spooning pork onto toasted rolls. Top with arugula and peacholive mixture.

sweet or savory, the only limit is your imagination when you pull a can of olives from the pantry. Family farms across California grow 95 percent of the ripe olives consumed in the United States. Each can is a labor of love. Multi-generational family farms work with family-owned canneries in California to produce each can and ensure only the highest quality olives make it from the farm to your game-day table. A Blistering Comedy Starring Judith Chapman As Talulah Bankhead

Photo by Matthew McLean Continued from Page 1 see her perform locally in the Desert Rose Playhouse’s sensational comedy production of “Looped”, hilariously and cleverly written by Matthew Lombardo, and brilliantly directed by former Desert Rose Playhouse artistic director Jim Strait. “Looped” is based on a true incident that involved stage actor and Hollywood star Tallulah Bankhead in 1965. Ms. Bankhead was already infamous for being, shall we say, difficult as a performer. Punctuality and following the norms of show business rules were definitely not her strong suit. Alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity is what fueled her world. America dearly loves its rebels. They’re the ‘Peck’s bad- boys and girls who flout the rules of society and drown themselves in public and private hedonism much to the delight of the tabloid readers. They may be colorful and quotable but they usually flame-out early in life. The story of “Looped” revolves around a key line of additional dialogue that has to be recorded by Ms. Bankhead in a recording studio and then reinserted into the film. It’s a simple request that all film actors are required to do when necessary. But the movie

Judith Chapman in “Looped. Photo by Matthew McLean producers forget they are dealing with Tallulah Bankhead. The job of meeting and having her record the line falls to Danny (Mark Fearnow, in a nicely judged performance), a film editor who is unprepared to deal with the whirlwind star and ego of Tallulah Bankhead; a performer who never suffered fools easily. Miquel Arballo as Steve is the recording director in the studio booth who lends just the right amount of quiet professional frustration, in trying to do his job and then take his son to a LA Dodger baseball game afterwards. If this story sounds prosaic and not very engaging, you had better “fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night”, to quote Bette Davis as Margo Channing, in “All About Eve”. Judith Chapman’s towering comedic portrayal as Tallulah Bankhead, will loom large as a Desert Theatre League Best Performance by a Leading Female candidate, come the 2019 Desert Star Awards ceremony this Fall. The beauty of her performance lies in her overall professionalism, talent, and the inventiveness she brings to the task of recreating Tallulah Bankhead’s insecurities, salty language, warts and all style, and still have the audience in stitches with her impeccable timing, pacing, and stage business, that makes for a

deliciously, sublime evening of theatre entertainment for adults (strong language). It’s pure Judith Chapman totally immersed and completely in command within the skin, body movement, quirks, and tics of Bankhead that reaches out and grabs the audience turning them into acolytes of an actor who knows how to take the stage and perform her special magic. This is what the great Noel Coward called having

“Star Quality”. It’s reserved for only a few but when we’re in its presence, it is a golden moment in the theatre. A special kudo goes to Desert Rose Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Robbie Wayne, for obtaining the services of Ms. Chapman for “Looped”. The creative team led by director Strait features a small, intentionally cramped recording studio set design by Bruce Weber and a lighting design by the

redoubtable Phil Murphy, with costume design by Ruth Braun and Robbie Wayne, along with sound design by Jim Strait and Miquel Arballo, and Paul Taylor, assistant to the director, complete the creative team. “Looped”, performs at the Desert Rose Playhouse Friday and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 2 PM through February 10, 2019. This is a Must See production. For tickets call the Box Office at 760-202-3000.
