By Desert Star Staff SAN FRANCISCO -- A group of men who go by the name “Dadvocates” is pressing California’s congressional leaders for action on paid parental leave. The men on Thursday will deliver petitions with 40,000 signatures to the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in support of federally mandated paid family leave. Attorney Charles Stone, one of the Dadvocates, says paid leave allows families crucial bonding time that pays dividends for years to come. “It’s not just about the fact that you’re forming these

important relationships for the rest of your life,” he states. “It’s also about just the mental health and spiritual health of the family as a whole.” The United States is the only industrialized country that does not have a national paid leave program. California has a statebased family leave program that pays partial salary for 12 weeks, but many families can’t afford to take advantage of it. VA Anti-Tobacco Bills Aim to Keep Teens from Smoking

About 33 percent of Virginia high school students have used e-cigarettes at some point, according to the CDC. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. -- Even as the Trump administration raised the age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21 last

month, Virginia lawmakers have introduced three bills to make it even harder for teens to access tobacco products. The bills aim to increase the state cigarette

tax six fold, ban the sales of all flavored tobacco products and create a statewide retail licensing system. The bills’ cosponsor,

Democratic Delegate Patrick Hope of Arlington, pointed out that raising the cigarette tax from 30 cents a pack - the second-lowest rate in the nation - to $1.80 would bring the tax up to the national average. “The data shows that by increasing tax by this amount, it would decrease the number of people that smoke,” Hope said. “And in turn, it will reduce the access for youth to get their hands on cigarettes and become addicted.” Gov. Ralph Northam has proposed raising the cigarette tax by 30-cents a pack, but Hope said he doesn’t think that goes far enough. Almost 1 in 4 Virginia high school students uses tobacco in some form, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Another anti-tobacco plan that falls short, according

to Hope, is the Trump administration’s ban on certain e-cigarette flavors. Hope said the number of Virginians who vape has exploded over the past four years, and this bill would outlaw all flavored tobacco products in the Commonwealth. “You really can’t sugarcoat this in any way - the industry is flavoring these products to attract kids, and that is very harmful to them,” he said. “And so, what we’re doing is we have an outright flavored tobacco ban.” He added a bill to establish a tobacco retail licensing system would help ensure stores are keeping tobacco away from kids. Last fall, one person died and at least 30 reported lung injuries from using vaping products, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Despite Proposed Bill, TN Lags in Accommodation for Pregnant Workers

By Desert Star Staff A bill in Congress that would ensure pregnant women aren’t fired from their jobs for requesting reasonable accommodations in the workplace has received bipartisan approval in the House Education and Labor Committee, and soon should move to the House floor for a vote. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is co-sponsored by 26 representatives from both sides of the aisle. Elizabeth Gedmark is vice president of the workforce advocacy group A Better Balance. She said gaps in current state laws leave Tennessee’s pregnant workers at risk of losing their jobs for making minor requests, such as needing to sit or avoid heavy lifting. “We for many years have been working on a Tennessee Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, and that bill has garnered bipartisan support,” Gedmark said. “We expect that it will again this year, and we think

that 2020 is the year that Tennessee will be next.” The bill is sponsored by Democratic state Rep. Johnny Shaw of Bolivar. In 2018, Tennessee made national headlines when a New York Times investigation revealed six Memphis women had suffered miscarriages after lifting heavy boxes without being given breaks at their employer’s warehouse. Gedmark said outdated policies aren’t in line with the fact that women now outnumber men in the labor force, according to the latest federal data. “Women are now the majority of the workforce, so this is not the 1950s,” she said. “And we can’t rely on laws from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s for our reality now, where women are working farther into their pregnancies and more and more women are working, and they’re supporting their families.” She pointed out while a 1978 federal law bars employers from firing

Gedmark added that pregnancy discrimination remains widespread and is an uphill battle in courtrooms.

“Even in court cases where women had gone all the way to court with this issue, twothirds of them in post-2015 cases lost their pregnancydiscrimination claims,” she said. She also noted black

Maryland Has Largest Black Prison Population in U.S.

By Desert Star Staff BALTIMORE -- While racial disparities in imprisonment in the U.S. have decreased overall, Maryland’s is on the rise, according to a new report. More than 70% of the state’s prison population is black, compared with about 30% of the state population. This is the highest percentage of imprisoned African-Americans in any state in the nation, according to Marc Schindler, executive director of the Justice Policy Institute, which put out the report.

Schindler says the national average is a little over 30%, and he points out that underinvestment in neighborhoods, especially in Baltimore, and harsh crime policies are some of the many reasons for the large racial disparity. “We have to recognize that within the justice system in Maryland and how the justice system responds doesn’t help things,” he states. “It actually makes it worse oftentimes, and that includes over policing, very harsh sentencing, restrictive parole practices.”

The racial disparities exist even as Maryland’s prison population declined by 13% since 2014, according to the report. Meanwhile, Gov. Larry Hogan just announced four new bills to reduce violent crime that include adding up to 500 additional police officers. But Schindler maintains what’s needed is more investment in programs for young adults, not more policing. The Justice Policy Institute report shows that the racial difference in January 24, 2020

prisons is most pronounced among emerging adults ages 18 to 24, who criminal justice reform advocates say are developmentally more like teenagers. Tyrone Walker, who works with Schindler at the institute, was 19 when he was incarcerated for killing another man. He maintains if he had more resources in his Washington, D.C., neighborhood at the time, he might not have committed the crime. “They always talk about victims and perpetrators,

women filed nearly 30% of pregnancy-discrimination complaints between 2010 and 2015, despite making up only 14% of the female labor force.

but no one ever talks about perpetrators being victims,” he states. “A lot of us come from these crime-ridden communities with the wrong concept of what a man looks like, what community members are. A lot of us never heard the word ‘community.’ “ The JPI report suggests that Maryland consider legislation to raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction to 20, following the lead of other states such as Vermont, Illinois and Massachusetts.

Dr. Howard Cohen, CMD, HMDC, Medical Director for Family Hospice Care, and also an accomplished actor, will give a brief presentation on the importance of storytelling in coping with Alzheimer’s disease and introduce the play. About Isabelle Sarfati Ms. Sarfati was born in Paris, France, and lived there until her family moved to Israel when she was 12 years old. After completing high school and military service in Israel, Isabelle moved back to France (1984) but soon immigrated to the United States (1986), where she and her wife, Lorraine Carlson, would meet, marry and enjoy pursuing careers together in New York City and San Francisco before moving to Palm Springs in 2017.

Ms. Sarfati is very grateful to Alzheimer’s Coachella Valley for producing Broken Open and believing in the play’s heartfelt messages. Isabelle credits Lorraine with helping her condense into prose the essential truth about what has been a 60-year struggle to find out who her real father is before her mother’s memory, and self-identity are lost forever to Alzheimer’s disease. Today, Isabelle is laserfocused on completing her memoir, expanding Broken Open into a 3-act play, and creating an original screenplay documenting the pivotal role played by Madame Margot and others in providing a safe harbor of hope for post-WWII Jewish children and orphans at Le Château Rose in Normandy, France. Also, Isabelle recently started a Women’s Storytelling Group with Katie Ullman to motivate and engage others in writing and sharing their personal stories. About Dr. Howard Cohen Dr. Howard Cohen, CMD, HMDC, is the Medical Director for Family Hospice Care. Jewish Federation Of The Desert Addresses Security Issues

Tree of Life, Bruce Landgarten, Stephen Weiss, Brad Orsini & Miles Berger By Pam Price Dangerous times call for prudent security measures, and the desert is no exception to this new imperative. The Jewish Federation of the Desert in Rancho Mirage presented a town hall-style meeting on January 16th introducing the Secure Community Network ( SNC), a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 as a central address serving the American Jewish Community by addressing matters of security, all-hazard preparedness, and response as it impacts community safety. Bruce Landgarten, the Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, addressed the group on current security issues in the desert, which became an even more relevant issue in the wake of the Oct. 27, 2018 massacre of 11 individuals at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. “The actions implied in the three words ‘Run, Hide, Fight’ save lives,” said Landgarten,” adding “it was proven 16 months ago when the Tree of Life Synagogue was the site of the worst antiSemitic attack on U.S. soil. As horrible as the attack on that Shabbat morning was, the security training given the leadership and members of the Pittsburgh Jewish community in the 18 months beforehand unquestionably saved lives.” Speaking on behalf of the SNC, Brad Orsini CEO presented a two-hour lecture describing security measures that have been implemented at Jewish institutions, synagogues, Jewish Community Centers, day school, and camps focused on thwarting future attacks. The implementation of these security measures has proven to become a “critical, proven partner for Jewish communities across the U.S. and a standard insurance policy for communities and executives in need. An example given by SCN is when the conflict in the Middle East heightens, or the terrorism level rises in the U.S. community leaders rely on SCN to keep them informed and assist while implementing necessary precautions to secure their facilities and people. Warner Bros. ‘Goldfinch’ Now on DVD

The Warner Bros. film “The Goldfinch” is based on Donna Tartt’s 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about how a young boy’s life is changed following a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York that kills his mother. As he runs from the museum following the blast, he takes a tiny painting of a goldfinch with him. After the tragedy, 13-yearold Theo Decker (Oakes Fegley) is taken in by his best friend’s family, who live on the Upper East Side. Nicole Kidman is his friend’s mom, who eventually learns to love him as if he were

her own son. Theo is happy, and all is well until his father (Luke Wilson) suddenly shows up with his girlfriend Xandra (Sarah Paulson) and reclaims him, unfortunately for Theo. He then is taken to Las Vegas, where he is befriended by Boris (Finn Wolfhard), who lives in Theo’s neighborhood with his Russian father. The two boys soon become pals and hang out together all the time. When Theo’s dad is killed in a car accident, Theo runs away and heads back to New York. Boris has promised to join him in a few days, but he never does. Theo grows up and

becomes a New York Art dealer working with a mentor he met as a youngster. The older Theo is now played by Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”). He loves his job and still has the painting of the goldfinch that he stole years earlier. Or does he? “The Goldfinch” was written by Peter Straughan and directed by John Crowly. “The Goldfinch,” rated R for drug use and language, has a running time of 149 minutes and is now available on DVD and Blu ray. The DVD featurettes are: “The Goldfinch Unbound” with commentary about the film from the

director and actors, “The Real Goldfinch” about the painting, and the art museum where it is located and deleted scenes.

Well, it’s that time of year. Time for the Oscar telecast, which will air Sunday, February 9, at 5 pm on ABC-TV. If you are planning to enter a betting contest at work or elsewhere, you probably already have a strong hunch about the outcome. If you watched the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild awards, you have another set of clues. Their picks in the Best Acting

categories were: Best Actor-Joaquin Phoenix “Joker.” Best Actress--Renee Zelwegger “Judy. Best Supporting Actor-Brad Pitt “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” and Laura Dern for Best Supporting Actress in “Marriage Story.” The nine nominees for Best Picture are: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joker, Marriage Story, The Irishman, 1917, Ford vs. Ferrari, Little Women, Parasite, and Jo Jo Rabbit. My prediction is either Once Upon a Time in Hollywood or 1917, but your guess is as good as mine.

NASA asteroid warning: TWO huge space rocks to hurtle past Earth

By Desert Star Staff The new year brings with its new asteroid threats, with NASA warning of two close cosmic flybys in a single day following a busy festive period of Near Earth Object (NEO) approaches to our planet. The first NEO to buzz the Earth today is identified as 2020 AQ1 – and was only first spotted on January 11. Happily, the 755ft-diameter space rock screamed safely by us at roughly 2:54am EST, passing a mere 0.026 AU from Earth – 2.5 million miles from the planet’s core – at a speed of 61,500 miles per hour. The asteroid will head out into the Milky Way, but it is expected to make another loop around and come back www.desertstarweekly.com

this way on August 23, 2104. Were an object of that size and velocity to hit the Earth, it could level an entire city in seconds. Next up on Monday is 2013 DU, estimated to be up to 308 feet in diameter, travelling at a (relatively) paltry 14,226 mph, much slower than its earlier cosmic counterpart. It’s expected to pass the Earth at 9:19pm EST, at a safe distance of 0.083 AU or 3.5 million miles. The ESA has identified 21,655 NEO asteroids and 109 NEO comets, all of which pose a potential threat to our planet. However, as shown by space rocks like 2020 AQ1, which was only discovered less than two weeks ago, there are many more potential dangers lurking out there in space.

On Roe v. Wade Anniversary, FL Lawmakers Move to Restrict Abortion Access

By Desert Star Staff TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -Reproductive rights advocates say it’s likely no coincidence that Florida legislation restricting access to abortion services for pregnant teens moved closer to a floor vote on the 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade on Wednesday. About two hours before abortion rights advocates gathered in the State Capitol to celebrate the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on reproductive freedom, the Senate Rules Committee passed a bill 9-to-

7 that would require teens seeking abortions to have signed parental consent. Heather Shumaker, senior attorney at the National Women’s Law Center, says that would create unnecessary barriers for those teens. “You can’t legislate healthy family conversations, and we know from conversations with young people that those who feel comfortable talking to their parents about this decision -- who have safe environments in their home -- already do talk to their parents about

this decision,” she states. In 1989, the Florida Supreme Court overturned similar legislation, citing privacy protections in the state Constitution. Senate Bill 404 is just days away from getting a floor vote. Amy Weintraub, reproductive rights program director for group Progress Florida, says backers of reproductive rights across the state are concerned that today’s conservative court would be more likely to uphold the law, potentially

narrowing the scope of people’s rights to privacy. “It’s kind of like a Trojan horse,” she states. “They want to test the court’s acceptance of this type of law, in the hopes that more anti-abortion legislation will be easy to implement in the

months and years to come.” With support from Republican state lawmakers and Gov. Ron DeSantis, the bill is likely to become law. Still, its opponents say they’ll continue to make their case against the measure.

Third of Europeans know ‘little’ or ‘nothing’ about Holocaust

By Desert Star Staff Knowledge of the Holocaust is lacking in Europe, according to a CNN/ComRes survey, which found that a third of Europeans polled admitted they knew little or nothing about the genocide committed by Adolf Hitler. One in 20 Europeans in the countries surveyed by the news outlet has never even heard of the Holocaust. The lack of knowledge was particularly rampant in France, where one out of five people, between the ages of 18 and 34, said they’d never heard of it. In Austria, where Hitler was born, 12 percent of young people said they had never heard of the Holocaust. Austria also had the highest number of people who said they knew “just a little” about it, with four out of 10 Austrian adults giving that response. But Europeans do apparently see the benefit of keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive, with two-thirds saying that doing so helps ensure that similar horrors

will never happen again. That number rose to 80 percent in Poland, home to the Nazi death camp Auschwitz. Anti-Semitism & Jewish stereotypes Although half of Europeans said that commemorating the Holocaust helps fight antiSemitism, it hasn’t stopped anti-Semitic views from existing. For instance, 40 percent of respondents said that Jews are at risk of racial violence in their countries. Half of them said their governments should do more to fight anti-Semitism. Jewish stereotypes are also rampant in Europe, with four out of 10 people in Poland and Hungary saying that Jews have too much influence in global business and finance. Around one in three people in those countries said Jews were too influential in political affairs around the world. One in five people in France, Germany, and Austria said Jews had too much influence in the media, while a quarter said they had too much weight on wars and conflicts.

By Desert Star Staff PALM DESERT, CA – The City of Palm Desert invites all artists, galleries, museums, non-profit arts organizations, and private collectors to participate in the 2021/2022 El Paseo Sculpture Exhibition. The deadline for entries, which must be submitted electronically at www. callforentry.org, is February 21,

2020, at 11:59 p.m. MST.

However, when asked how much of the world’s population is Jewish, around two-thirds of respondents guessed too high. A quarter of Hungarians, for example, estimated that the world is more than 20% Jewish. They were off by a factor of 100, as around 0.2% is actually Jewish, according to Pew Research Center’s Global Religious Landscape study. Thoughts on Israel Twenty-eight percent

of respondents said that most anti-Semitism in their countries was a response to actions taken by Israel. In contrast, 18 percent said it was due to the everyday behavior of Jewish people. Still, only one in 10 Europeans surveyed said they personally had an unfavorable view of Jews. However, the number was much higher in Hungary, where 19 percent admitted

that they did. The number was 15 percent in Poland. One-third of those surveyed said that Israel uses the Holocaust to justify its actions. The CNN/ComRes poll surveyed 7,092 adults in seven countries: Austria, Britain, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Sweden. Interviews took place between September 7 and September 20.

Installation is expected to take place between October 19 and November 5 with a dedication to take place in January 2021. Artists who participated in the 2019/2020 El Paseo Sculpture Exhibition are not eligible. Selected sculptures will be showcased on the medians of Palm Desert’s world-famous shopping thoroughfare, El

Paseo, where they will be seen by thousands of residents and Palm Desert visitors. Southwest Magazine has identified Palm Desert and the exhibition, which has been featured repeatedly in national art journals such as Sculpture Magazine and Art in America, as one of five art destinations in the United States. The City of Palm Desert

provides a $5,000 honorarium for each selected artwork. The exhibition also presents a unique opportunity for artists to display and potentially sell their work. The City has purchased pieces from previous El Paseo exhibitions for its permanent public art collection and exhibition sculptures are sold to visiting collectors every year.

2021/2022 El Paseo Sculpture Exhibition Call For Entries The City’s Art in Public Places Commission will select 18 sculptures and up to four alternates from submitted entries on March 11. The City Council will review the selections and artists whose works have been approved for the Exhibition will be notified beginning April 13.
