Swafford Wins Career Builder Challenge
Big win in the desert, a $1,044,000,00 payday and moving-up in the FedEx cup from 69th to 6th. Story and Photos by Pat Krause Another great Career Builder Challenge ended with a thrilling conclusion. At one point, there was a three-way tie and a couple of others close behind. The play was fantastic regardless of the weather. Rain threatened almost every day. Fortunately, it held off on Saturday,
but then it became a little windy. On Sunday, everyone kept looking to the sky wondering when the rain would come. It was hard to believe, but it didn’t rain until play was done and the 2017 winner was, Hudson Swafford, with a -20 score. Runner up was Adam Hadwin, who joined the Elite
Players club with a 59, scored a-19 and gave Swafford a scare as he was so close behind and close enough to win. Brian Harman and Bud Cauley were also a threat to the leader with -18 to place 3rd. Dominic Bozzelli was close behind with a-17. If the golf gods were in their favor, any of them could have won.
By Jack Lyons, Theatre and Film Critic Artistic director Ron Celona has a penchant for finding and directing winning productions for his intimate 88-seat, CV Repertory Theatre venue. He has yet to meet a challenge he and his outstanding technical team can’t overcome. Their current production of “Baby The Musical”, is a case in point. This creatively performed musical, directed by Celona, boasts a cast of ten highly talented singer/ actors that shine in the intimate staging space of CV REP. In addition, the production also features four, live off-stage musicians, under the first-rate musical direction of Scott Storr. Most of the audience on opening night probably didn’t
know that this fabulous little musical gem was written back in 1983, running for a year on Broadway, nor did I. If one does remember it, then you’ll be pleased to know that a couple of tweaking, and updating features - a new musical number here and the dropping of a couple there, plus a fresh feel to the libretto to go along with Shires’ wonderful score and Maltby’s ingenious lyrics - have enhanced the overall enjoyment of this production. The time is the present and the place is a college town. Three appealing couples, each newly expecting a child, have different but familiar reactions to their coming blessed event. The “Millennials”, Lizzy and Danny wonderfully played and sung by Melody Hollis and Caleb Horst,
are university juniors who have just moved in together. The “Generation Y” couple, Athletic Pam (Erica Hanrahan-Ball) and her sports instructor husband, Nick (Perry Ojeda), have had some trouble conceiving. The Generation X couple Arlene (Janna Cardia) and her husband Alan (Tom Andrew), already have three grown daughters. Arlene, unsure of what to do at age 40+, is contemplating an abortion while Alan is thrilled with thought of a new baby. There are many poignant and compelling moments in this insightful production that really resonate with the audience. All productions today should be so lucky as to be blessed with an ensemble
Swafford was 2 strokes back of the leader when he made his charge, and he birdied the last 3 of 4 holes to win. This was Swafford’s first PGA tour victory. He said he started out slow but found his rhythm and knew he was playing well. Swafford has been close to a win lately, but it didn’t happen. Everyone kept telling
him he would win, just be patient, and it will happen. He said he was disappointed that he missed the last putt, but he would take a 2-inch putt to win a PGA Tour event anytime. He said he made some really great shots, and he got a couple of crazy breaks, Continues on Page 12

Astronaut Captain Scott Kelly at the Desert Town Hall Story and Photos by Pat Krause Desert Town Hall is celebrating 25 years of bringing some of the worlds most notable speakers to the Desert. The guests they bring are from all walks of life, politics, media, world leaders and more. This year the first speaker was in space for a year. Captain Scott Kelly, the astronaut, came to speak of his time in space, initial for six months and then for a year. This was a groundbreaking event for our country. His year on the space station included space walks, and his partners were Russian Cosmonauts. Kelly has a twin brother, Mark Kelly. This space mission included his brother for research on the human body as his brother’s body closely resembles his own. Extended stays in space studies are needed to hopefully bring a mission to Mars one day. Kelly said he was hoping that mission would come about during his lifetime. He says that is a possibility from what NASA has learned. Only time will tell if the human body can sustain a years-long journey to Mars. Kelly said that the most beautiful thing was the view of the Earth from space. He noted that he saw the diminishing rain forests and other changes even since his first flight. He was a great speaker as he told about his emotions and the excitement he felt. He feels very strongly about his part in these studies that he feels are so important. He said that

He learned that he had to apply himself day by day to achieve what he wanted, and that was to be an astronaut even at an early age. He wasn’t a good pilot when he started out but became what he called well enough through

Exchange-traded Funds & the Risks they Impose
By Janice Gough ExchangeTraded Funds (EFTs) are a powerful tool for building wealth and are often considered much less riskier than other asset classes because they allow for broad diversification of stocks and bonds at a fraction of the cost. Investors seeking greater diversification at a reduced cost are drawn to these investments. Despite their abundant upside, ETFs are not immune to risks and costs. Investors must be aware of these potential risks to ensure success and should avoid thinking that they can set

their portfolio to autopilot. Here are the Risks to review when owning these investments: 1. Market Risk Risk ETFs are only a wrapper for their underlying investments, and are still subject to the ups and downs of the markets they track. Although they provide investors many advantages that can help lower risks, however, nothing will stop them from declining if their basic assets fall. 2. Trading Risk Seen as tax efficient, transparent and cheaper than other asset classes, ETFs still entail costs in the form of commissions, sales charges, market impact costs and direct trading costs. And because of the large number of participants in this market, they may also suffer from crowded trade risks. Like other assets, ETFs also carry opportunity costs, creation and redemption fees, and taxes on interest income and capital gains, which must be factored into overall trading costs to avoid any future surprises. 3. Counterparty Risk or default Risk (usually a bank) This can come into play when dealing with lenders and synthetic replication of an index. This is the use of financial engineering, using derivatives (swaps) instead of purchasing the same holdings of an index. A derivative is a contract between two parties whose value is based on an agreed-upon underlying
financial asset or index or security. Banks may loan similar holdings in the basket of securities in the form of derivatives. In the case of securities’ lending, the risk is seen when holdings are lent to another investor for a short period or if the bank folded. This risk can be minimized by establishing collateral requirements. 4. Collateralizing Using derivatives over purchasing the actual stock (synthetic duplication) of an index leads to higher risk for which investors; however, investors are compensated by lower tracking error of the index and lesser fees compared with their physical replication peers. 5. Tracking Error Risk This risk occurs when an ETF does not mimic or follow the index it is tracking. Synthetic Replication of an index has fewer tracking errors than Physical replication. Physical replication must consider things like management fees, tax treatment and dividend timing. ETF funds that use physical replication simply purchase the same underlying investments (stocks, bonds, ect.) as the index they are tracking, however, due to larger transactional costs (buying and selling of securities) when rebalancing the portfolio, they exhibit larger tracking errors than ones that use synthetic replication, and expenses are higher.
5. Liquidity Risk It behooves investors to understand liquidity from the perspective of ETFs. Since ETFs are at least as liquid as their underlying assets. Trading conditions are more accurately reflected in implied liquidity rather than the average daily volume of the fund itself. Implied liquidity is a measure of what can potentially be traded in ETFs based on underlying assets. Investors who, in the past have relied on average daily volume to gauge liquidity, need to reassess their strategy for the ETF market. Liquidity usually is not a concern with the largest and most popular ETFs. 6. Composition Risk ETFs that track indexes but are not interchangeable. Two funds may track the same index or sector, but their performance may not be equal because of different holdings in the underlying basket. Investors should not assume all ETFs that track a specific sector that will perform the same. By understanding the vital features of the ETF basket itself, which are the various securities included in it and their individual weightings, will provide greater success... 7. Tax Risk ETFs’ tax efficiency does not apply to all of them, so it is important for investors to study a fund’s tax treatment, especially if it is exposed to commodity and currency markets. These
funds are usually taxed differently than others. Although ETFs typically do in-kind transactions to avoid paying capital gains distributions, actively managed funds may not do all their selling in kind, leaving investors exposed to capital gains’ taxes. This also applies to international ETFs funds that use derivatives, and commodity and currency ETFs. 9. Hype Risk ETFs are all the rage these days, with new funds popping up everywhere. Investors should study each ETF’s methodology and documentation and be wary of chasing the “next big thing,” by sticking to their investment strategy. 10. Closure Risk Some 100 ETFs on average close each year, at which time managers liquidate the fund and pay out their shareholders. The fund incurred capital gains, transaction expenses and in some cases legal expenses, which filter down to the investor. Investors should sell an ETF as soon as the issuer announces it will close. ACA Repeal Called “Devastating” for People with Disabilities
By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK - Advocates for people with disabilities say dismantling the Affordable Care Act would be catastrophic for them. Repealing the ACA would turn back the clock on progress toward increasing independence and opportunities for this population over the last quarter-century, said Susan Dooha, executive director of the Center for Independence of the Disabled New York, including protections against being denied insurance based on health status or disability. “The Affordable Care Act has a provision called Section 1557 that has helped protect people from discrimination in insurance,” she said, “and that would go away.” She said requirements to provide comprehensive benefits - including mental health services, wheelchairs
and rehabilitation therapies - that people with disabilities need also could be lost. When the ACA went into effect, Dooha said, premiums for private insurance and for small employers were cut in half. Key to that is the individual mandate that requires everyone, including those who are young and healthy, to buy insurance. “If everyone is no longer in the market together,” she said, “people who have coverage now who are paying their own way are not going to be able to afford it.” Congress already has passed budget resolutions calling for legislation to roll back provisions of the Affordable Care Act, but no replacement legislation has been introduced. One provision already on the chopping block is Medicaid expansion, which Dooha noted has made it possible for many people with disabilities to find

of dependency that they don’t need and don’t want,” she said. Dooha said her concern is that repeal of the Affordable Care Act and threatened
changes to Medicaid would be a massive shift of healthcare costs onto those who can least afford them.
showed scientists were underestimating the number of women above the age of 65 who are dying from cervical cancer, prompting a re-evaluation of the cancer screening guidelines which normally recommend 65 as a screening cut-off point. One in five women have a hysterectomy in the US so the readjusted calculations make a significant difference in national mortality rates. In particular, black women are more likely to have hysterectomies at a young age (in comparison to white women) because of their greater susceptibility to fibroids. The racial disparity in death rates between black and white women was underestimated by 44 percent. In the US, 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Four thousand women die from the
disease – deaths which could be prevented with routine smear tests and screenings.”This is a preventable disease and women should not be getting it, let alone dying from it,” says study leader Dr. Anne Rositch. “Since the goal of a screening program is to ultimately reduce mortality from cervical cancer, then you must have accurate estimates within the population targeted by those programs – adult women with a cervix,” Rositch added. “These findings motivate us to better understand why, despite the wide availability of screening and treatment, older and black women are still dying from cervical cancer at such high rates in the United States.” The researchers hope the updated statistics will help scientists to better understand cervical cancer, and crucially, how to prevent it.

Cervical cancer killing women at much higher rate than previously thought
By Desert Star Staff Women’s risk of dying from cervical cancer is much higher than scientists previously
thought, according to a new Johns Hopkins study which readjusted cancer calculations to eliminate women who had
hysterectomies. The new study, published in the Cancer journal Monday, found that black women in America are dying at 77 percent higher rate than previously thought, while white women are dying at a 47 percent higher rate from the disease. The adjusted figures by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health incorporate a new calculation system for cancer death rates. The study subtracted the number of women who have had hysterectomies - which usually involves the removal of both uterus and cervix, therefore eliminating the risk of contracting cervical cancer – allowing a more accurate assessment of how many women are actually dying from the disease. The new figures also

After a Weekend of Protests – Now What, California?
By Desert Star Staff BERKELEY, Calif. — In California alone, there were nearly 50 “sister marches” in tandem with Saturday’s Women’s March on Washington in the nation’s capital. Rallies included smaller hamlets - like Santa Maria, Santa Paula and Oxnard, up north - as well as marches in the major metropolitan areas. And many Californians went to the march in Washington, D.C. Ahmina Maxey was among them. She said that for her, it was about advocating for clean energy. Maxey is based in Berkeley and is the U.S. and Canada regional coordinator for the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives - so cleaner air is her priority. “I have asthma, a lot of my family and friends
have asthma,” Maxey said. “We are impacted by these poor decisions that our elected officials and their appointees make.” The latest poll from Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and Bill Lane Center for the American West, said that 55 percent of Californians would like to see tax reform from the Trump administration, but almost as many - 48 percent - think repealing the Affordable Care Act is a bad idea. The Women’s Marches cast a wide net in terms of social justice causes, with participants citing concerns about workers’ rights and reproductive rights, religious freedoms and environmental protections. To keep the momentum, Maxey said the focus now is on providing positive alternatives.
Oakland, Calif., was the site of one of the state’s almost 50 “sister marches” to the Women’s March on Washington on Sat., Jan. 21. (Oakland Women’s March) “Not only are we against these things, but we also are really for solutions that we can demonstrate, and that we
stand united in,” she said. Speakers at many of the events urged people to channel their energy and
frustration into working to improve their own communities, including running for office.
the non-member state ‘permanent observer’ status. “Anyone who is not a friend to our ally Israel is not a friend to the United States.”That same logic was used this January when House Republicans prepared a legislation that would decrease – even potentially eliminate – US funding to the UN. According to calculations by the conservative Heritage Foundation, the US provides over 22 percent of all UN funding. The bill to cut the funding was introduced shortly after the UNSC voted 14-0 to condemn the continued construction of illegal Israeli settlements – the resolution Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considered a backstab from the US, which declined to veto it, as per former President Barack Obama’s suddenly
critical attitude to Israel at the end of his presidency. Still, the resolution vote came the same year the Obama administration awarded Israel with its largest military aid package ever, signing a memorandum of understanding in September that would give it $38 billion over 10 years. However, with Donald Trump now in power, many Republicans seem to be attacking the idea of participating in the UN or cutting funding with renewed fervor. Each year, the US gives approximately $8 billion in mandatory payments and voluntary contributions to the international peace agency and its affiliated organizations. About $3 billion of that sum goes the UN’s regular peacekeeping budgets.
US exit from United Nations could become reality with fresh bill
By Desert Star Staff A Republican-proposed House Resolution has quietly slipped past the public radar – proposing that the United States withdraw its membership from the United Nations, just as another bill was being concocted to cut US funding to the body. The bill, proposed by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), entitled American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017, seeks a complete US withdrawal from the UN, that the international body remove its headquarters from New York and that all participation be ceased with the World Health Organization as well. Rogers and other prominent Republicans have repeatedly voiced the idea that US taxpayer money should not go to an organization that does not promote US interests – especially one that does not stick up for Israel together with the US. The new document is merely the latest manifestation of sentiment that has been brewing for some time. The bill was quietly introduced on January 3 and was passed on to the House www.desertstarweekly.com
Committee on Foreign Affairs. If approved, the bill would take two years to take effect. It would also repeal the United Nations Participation Act of 1945, signed in the aftermath of WWII. “The President shall terminate all membership by the United States in the United Nations in any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body of the United Nations...The United States Mission to the United Nations is closed. Any remaining functions of such office shall not be carried out,”according to the text of HR 193.The bill would also prohibit “the authorization of funds for the US assessed or voluntary contribution to the UN,” which would also include any military or peacekeeping expenditures, the use of the US military by the UN, and the loss of “diplomatic immunity for UN officers or employees” on US soil. Rogers had tried to pass the same bill in 2015, albeit unsuccessfully. “Why should the American taxpayer bankroll an international organization that works against America’s
interests around the world?” Rogers asked at the time in defense of his idea. “The time is now to restore and protect American sovereignty and get out of the United Nations.” Another supporter of HR 193, Rend Paul (R-KY) also put it like this in January 2015: “I dislike paying for something that two-bit Third World countries with no freedom attack us and complain about the United States… There’s a lot of reasons why I don’t like the UN, and I think I’d be happy to dissolve it,” added the Kentucky senator. Later, in June 2015, Rogers had introduced his document – then named HR 1205, but essentially the same USExit idea he’s proposing now. “The UN continues to prove it’s an inefficient bureaucracy and a complete waste of American tax dollars.” Rogers went on to name treaties and actions he believes “attack our rights as US citizens.” These included gun provisions, the imposition of international regulations on American fossil fuels – but more importantly, the UN attack on Israel, by voting to grant Palestine January 25, 2017

Israel approves 560 new il egal homes in E. Jerusalem as Trump takes office
By Desert Star Staff Israel has approved an additional 560 housing units to be constructed as part of its illegal settlement-building initiative in occupied East Jerusalem. The announcement comes 48 hours after Donald Trump took office as the 45th US president. Israel Radio talked to the Chairman of Jerusalem city hall’s Planning and Building committee, Meir Turgeman, who said the permits had been in the works, but delayed until Barack Obama was out of office.“I was told to wait until Trump takes office because he has no problem with building in Jerusalem,” Turgeman told Israel Radio, adding that there were hundreds more units awaiting approval. Nabil Abu Rdainah, spokesman Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told Reuters: “We strongly condemn the Israeli decision to approve the construction.” After new approval was granted, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced he had decided to lift restrictions on settlement construction in East Jerusalem. “There is no longer a need to coordinate construction in the Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem. We can build where we want and as much as we want,” the PM’s office statement
read, Reuters reported. Netanyahu also said he wants to allow construction of Israeli settlement on all Palestinian territories, which Israel has occupied since the 1967 Six-Day War. “My vision is to enact sovereignty over all the settlements,” the statement added. Obama – especially towards the end of his presidency – was critical of Israel’s settlement expansion on the grounds that it was destructive to regional peace and risked derailing a stable two-state solution. In his final weeks as president, he had to explain to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu why the US had withheld its traditional UN veto to block a new resolution condemning the illegal settlements. The American veto has protected Israel a great number of times before. Trump, on the other hand, may take a different line, as he edges US policy closer to Israel – most crucially, with plans to relocate the embassy of the United States from Tel Aviv to disputed Jerusalem. This has been welcomed warmly by the Israelis, while sending shock waves throughout the Arab world – with Jordan openly declaring that the move may lead to an explosion in radical Islamism, and Palestine
threatening to revoke its recognition of the Israeli state. Israel’s final approval of the new building permits was issued Sunday, marking a 180-degree reversal in Washington’s policy toward Tel Aviv. But settlementbuilding was unlikely to stop anyway, given that in 2016 it was revealed that hundreds of projects were still in the pipeline, to be built in the coming years. The current projects, according to Reuters, had been taken off the agenda in December at the last minute, following Netanyahu’s orders not to anger outgoing US President Barack Obama. But Israeli right-wingers
expect Trump to be far more cooperative on the matter. Israel has been building in East Jerusalem and the West Bank since 1967. The Palestinians believe East Jerusalem to be theirs. But Israel has been forcefully denying Palestinians the territory. The construction of these settlements, illegal under international law, has been the subject of growing controversy, mounting criticism from the international community, and a deteriorating security situation between Israelis and desperate Palestinians. According to Netanyahu, he will discuss the latest with Trump over the
phone on Sunday. “Many matters face us, the Israeli-Palestinian issue, the situation in Syria, the Iranian threat,” the Israeli PM said. Two days ago, the energy and infrastructures minister, Yuval Steinirt, said in an interview to Army Radio that “we are all praying that, alongside his sense of humor and colorful personality, Trump will understand the weight of responsibility lying on his shoulders and will turn out to be a courageous and serious president.” He added, “I very much hope and believe that he will move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.”
Iran to resume enhanced nuclear program if Trump dishonors P5+1 agreement
A general view of Bushehr nuclear power plant © Raheb Homavandi / Reuters By Desert Star Staff The head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Ali Akbar Salehi, said Tehran reserves the right to “act appropriately” if Washington reconsiders the so-called P5+1 deal on the Iranian nuclear program. “We can very easily snap back and go back … not only to where we were, but a much higher position technologically speaking,” Salehi said in an interview with Canada’s CBC News. to make a decision in that course, but we are prepared,” Iran’s nuclear chief added. According to the deal signed in July 2015 between Tehran and six major world powers (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany), Iran agreed to reduce the number of its centrifuges by two-thirds. Under the deal, governed by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Tehran also agreed to cap its uranium enrichment below the level needed for
bomb-grade material. The Islamic Republic also vowed to reduce its enriched uranium stockpile from around 10,000kg to 300kg for 15 years and agreed to international inspections. In response, Western countries agreed to lift international sanctions. Despite the breakthrough being hailed by former US President Barack Obama as a way to halt Iran’s alleged drive to develop nuclear weapons – an accusation which Tehran consistently denies – January 25, 2017
Trump previously called the agreement a “disaster”. During his campaign trail, the new president told an American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference in May that dismantling the deal was top of his agenda. “My number one priority is to dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran,” Trump said at the time, speaking before AIPAC in Washington, DC. “I have been in business a long time…this deal is catastrophic for Israel – for America, for the whole of the Middle East… We have rewarded the world’s leading state sponsor of terror with $ 150 billion and we received absolutely nothing in return.” In an interview with Iran’s IRIB news published on Sunday, Salehi noted that it’s too early to evaluate Trump’s stance on Iran. Tehran is gauging the new administration’s behavior in honoring its commitment to the deal.Salehi said Iran will not initiate a violation of the JCPOA, but warned that should Washington backtrack on the deal, Tehran will increase uranium enrichment capacity to 100,000 SWU in a year, the Tehran Times, reported. Last week, ahead of
Trump’s inauguration, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Washington could not unilaterally cancel the nuclear deal. “The president-elect has shown he is not happy about the nuclear deal, calling it the worst deal ever signed. This is only empty talk,” Rouhani said. “I don’t think he can do much when he goes to the White House.” The UN Security Council which monitors progress reports on the implementation of Iran’s nuclear deal, earlier this week heard that Iran is honoring its end of the bargain. “[The UN] has not received any report, nor is aware of any open source information regarding the supply, sale or transfer to Iran of nuclear-related items undertaken contrary to the provisions of the resolution,” Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman told the UNSC. Feltman also noted there’s no information on “Iranian ballistic missile activities or ballistic missilerelated transfers to the country undertaken contrary to the relevant provisions of the resolution,” the UN news service noted. www.desertstarweekly.com

How to Tell if You Have Flu, Cold or Stomach Flu
By Desert Star Staff While each year millions in the U.S. are sickened during flu season, many can’t distinguish between symptoms of the seasonal strain of the flu, a cold and the “stomach flu.” Knowing the difference, and how to properly treat each virus, can speed recovery. Similar Yet Different: While cold symptoms come on slowly and are limited to the head and upper respiratory system, flu symptoms affect the whole body and come on quickly. Telltale signs of the flu are fever and body aches. However, these are also symptoms of stomach flu, which isn’t related to a flu virus at all. Common viruses that wreak havoc on the digestive system include the norovirus and the rotavirus. Ironically, an immune system weakened by seasonal flu can leave you vulnerable to these so-called stomach flu viruses. What You Need to Know: Although high fever and body aches occur with both seasonal flu and viruses that attack the gastrointestinal system, these symptoms are more prevalent and severe in seasonal flu cases, and are accompanied by fatigue and headache. norovirus and the rotavirus both get the misnomer “stomach flu” from primary symptoms being watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and nausea or vomiting. Fever and body aches can also occur but are milder. No matter what the cause of a fever, it’s best to monitor your temperature. See a healthcare professional if a fever is too high or lingers for days. Treatment: For seasonal flu, the homeopathic medicine Oscillococcinum has been clinically shown to shorten both the severity and duration of symptoms. When patients took it within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, nearly 63 percent showed “clear improvement” or “complete resolution” within 48 hours. The key is to act quickly when symptoms surface, nipping them in the bud in a way that won’t interact with other medications or cause unwanted side effects like drowsiness. For stomach flu, stop eating solid food for a few hours. This will help settle your stomach. Then -- stick to foods that are easy to digest, such as toast, gelatin, bananas, rice and chicken -- avoiding fatty or spicy options. Stop eating if

HOROSCOPES ARIES
The key thoughts for Aries this year, in order to feel victorious in the midst of transformations in the world are: quality, devotion, courage, Right Relations, group endeavors and being directed by spiritual values that equalize everyone. Take seriously Buddha’s words. He prepared the Way for his Brother. Go through everything from the past. Eliminate most. Keep treasures. Take long trips up mountains.
TAURUS A new artistic ability has emerged much to your surprise, though you have longed for this since childhood. Make contact, a sort of networking on spiritual levels, with different people this year. Telling the truth concerning goals, purposes, the need for resources and resourceful people calls them forth quietly. Continue on your many paths. You have extra-planetary help. Pure foods and the circadian rhythm alleviates what hurts.
GEMINI Do you know what your future goals are? Sometimes neither Gemini nor Pisces can bring them into form and matter. We have goals but they remain hidden, etheric and remain in a visionary stage. This is a year of spiritual principles brought into outer practice. You find the Aquarian principles sustain and create health and vitality. You’ll ask for no boundaries,

thinking nothing is impossible. However, discipline is needed and this is a paradox.
CANCER Whenever you find yourself in a group, observe that you have become quite able at accomplishing multiple tasks. When seeking help and support, along it comes attempting to serve you. It’s important to live life as a cooperative participant. As routines disappear, imagination becomes a source of direction. Maintain daily disciplines for health and well-being. You need strength for the future.
LEO Work responsibilities expand. At times you may feel overwhelmed, other times you’re glad for the recognition and reliability of work. Sometimes you’re to be the leader. Leadership helps you focus on what the gifts and skills you have developed. Now they’re needed by the group. This is the Leo/ Aquarius partnership, yin/yang. Actually you’re the yang. Be fun-filled for the festivities.
VIRGO It’s good to assess all the good acts of service you have done for others. These are your deeply personal and creative achievements. Stay within these boundaries of goodness lest you feel emotionally exhausted and out of balance. The focus for
you is self-identity, expansive trips and travel that sustain your spirit. Work and family are most important. Protect them.
LIBRA You have shown discipline and structure these last years and they have helped create your self-identity as responsible and successful. Childhood may have felt difficult, harsh and cold, with either abandonment or strictness you didn’t understand. However, childhood was a training ground that has taken you into the fields of humanitarian service, assisting humanity always and everywhere. New resources emerge from the shadows. Someone misses you.
SCORPIO What personal decisions have you made recently from listening to your inner voice and instincts? Do you find them reliable and do they protect you? Notice I didn’t use the word intuition. Because very few of us have evolved enough into intuition. We must be directed by the Soul and have built all seven levels of our mind to enter intuition. Another name for intuition is the Rain Cloud of Knowable Things. That door is opening.
SAGITTARIUS Wishes are powerful. One day they manifest. Usually when our wish has dissipated and we’re wishing for something
else altogether. What have you wished for? What has come true? What are you wishing for now? If our wishes are deep enough we can’t reverse their manifesting in our lives. Most of our wishes are good things. I wish for you Right Resources and Right Use of Money. Love, too, of course.
CAPRICORN In the next months there are two important things to consider. You are to apply more of yourself to creative pursuits, bringing beauty out of everything. You are also to organize your money and finances. If young ones are around teach them about values and finance: how to save, how to give, how to choose things of value, how to care for themselves and having gratitude. All Capricorns are experiencing deep transformations, like inner earthquakes. You are the unicorn on the mountaintop.
forth new endeavors. You’ve already begun. Have fun now.
PISCES Chiron is in Pisces and Neptune, too. Both makes one very sensitive to the needs of the world. Sensitive to the abandoned, the unseen, the hungry, the homeless and the isolation many of us live in today. Chiron’s sensitivity makes you want to serve others. Your mind seeks ways to create an alternative way of life, a template of care for everyone. You seek resources. Ask for them. This is a spiritual journey. A journey of White Magic. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.
AQUARIUS You will feel in the coming months the need for a more stable home that sustains, comforts and protects. You seek a future that enabling you to feel both security and freedom. Each day prepare for that future through visualization. Visualize how you want to live, where, with whom. Visualization is your deepest creative resource. What we deep aspire to, appears eventually. Soon you will seek a new direction and bring
China’s Richest Man, Entertainment Tycoon Wang Jianlin, Rocks the World By Desert Star Staff DAVOS, Switzerland, -As the media and netizen are continuously stunned by the singing skills of China’s richest man, this week at the World Economic Forum (WEF), Wang Jianlin, Chairman of Dalian Wanda Group, quickly shifted his role from “showman” to
“businessman”, bringing extra emphasis to his mission to turn the real estate giant into a film, sports and tourism-led conglomerate and expand its reach across the globe. Wang Jianlin, the outspoken boss of Wanda Group, is known on Chinese social media for setting “small,
achievable” goals. In 2016, Wang’s major goal was to flip The Group’s focus from real estate to a few key services sectors with a new and growing emphasis on entertainment, tourism and sports. The results were spectacular, with a total increase in assets of 21.4 percent in 2016, according
to The Group’s annual report released on January 14th. To march The Group’s transition, Wang even sang four songs at the annual gala, ranging from rock songs to Chinese local opera. Wang’s performance was widely covered by global media and was considered as a smart PR move, even though media believe that it’s always a risk for an executive to do something uncharacteristic in the public. The videos of Wang singing have gone beyond viral, reaching more than 1.5 billion people globally so far, among which more than 1/3 are outside of China. It seems that the chairman’s personal hobby
not only shapes The Group’s corporate culture -- Wanda Group holds a company-wide singing competition “The Voice of Wanda” annually for its employees -- but also drives The Group’s strategy, as demonstrated in the annual report. At the WEF, Wang expressed the reason behind this transition, “Real state is a money spinner, but it cannot be sustainable and is not stable. Therefore, we’ll need to transit. People with money will go for health and entertainment. Entertainment is something that makes you happy, and sports are something that makes you healthy. Therefore, I’m coming to sports and entertainment.” Source: PRNewswire

Rah, Rah, Rah for ‘La La Land’
Writer/director Damien Chazelle won a Golden Globe for his original movie musical, “La La Land,” an inventive tribute to song, dance and dreams. By the end of the evening, the film garnered six additional Golden Globes that included honors for both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the acting category. The seven Golden Globe sweep may also portend golden potential when Oscar’s nominations are handed out soon. “La La Land” is set in Hollywood, a city that lures
in dreamers from every state, dreamers with stars in their eyes who want to be discovered. Such is the case with jazz pianist Seb (Ryan Gosling) and actress Mia (Emma Stone) who meet on a jammed L.A. freeway. While it is a great place to stage an amazing opening dance sequence atop hundreds of stalled vehicles, who would think of doing such a thing besides the very clever, creative Chazelle. As we all know, traffic jams can bring the freeway to a nerve-
Mia and Seb’s eyes meet, but it not love at first sight as he yells at her for thwarting his exit out of his lane, and she flips him the bird. They meet again, also unsuccessfully, but the third time’s the charm. Unfortunately, she is not a jazz aficionado, so can they make a lasting connection? An amazing fact about the film: Gosling, while a gifted guitarist, was not a pianist. However, he learned how to play the piano for this role and plays all of his music throughout the film. It is also interesting to note that this Canadian-born actor was, in his youth, a Mouseketeer on the Mickey Mouse Club circa ‘93-’95. Director Chazelle is drawn to jazz, which also played an important part in his film “Whiplash” starring wracking halt, and we just J.K Simmons, who won an sit there and fume, but as Oscar for his work as a harsh, “La La Land” begins people spontaneously leap out of their demanding music professor. Simmons also plays a cameo vehicles and begin dancing in “La La Land” as Seb’s boss on their cars, leaping, flipping and twirling until traffic starts to who fires him when he slips in some strains of jazz, which flow once again. The opening is truly creative. In fact, in was were not on the club’s play list. The music, composed so surprising and fun that my by Justin Hurwitz with lyrics husband started to applaud, by Benj Pasek and Justin as did the majority of the Paul, is pleasant, featuring people in the crowded movie the romantic ballad “City of theater. Hey, we’ve all been there, but never had the nerve Stars,” and the choreography by Mandy Moore is whimsical or inclination to dance on our as they waltz up into the car rooftops and hoods.

It’s been awhile since a musical has reached the silver screen. In the recent past, there was “Chicago,” with 13 Oscars nods and 6 wins, “Les Miserables” and “Into the Woods,” all adapted for the screen from successful theatrical musicals, but “La La Land” is a total movie original, penned by Chazelle. With so much buzz it should certainly win a Best-Picture nom from the Academy, and if the Golden Globes are an omen, it might not only bring movie musicals back into fashion; it could be a real contender. “La La Land,” runs for two hours, 8 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some language. Also in theatres: Martin Scorsese’s masterful “Silence” set in 17th century Japan and “Fences.” based on August Wilson’s powerful play, directed by and starring Denzel Washington. Both Washington and Viola Davis won Tony Awards when they starred in “Fences” on Broadway and Viola Davis won a Golden Globe for her dominant film performance, which may also mean an Oscar nod for her and for Denzel.

Charles S. Cohen to Host Film Series on KCET and Link TV BY BEVERLY COHN
We have our fingers crossed and hope we win.
“Chasing Madoff” is the fascinating story of Harry Markopolos, the original whistle blower on the Bernard Madoff scam. Part 1: The Film Series The Cohen Media group is synonymous with producing, directing, or distributing highend, award-worthy foreign films. Although there are American films in their vast library, it’s the foreign films that have received the most critical acclaim. Among the films that have been submitted for Best Foreign Language Academy Award consideration are: “Timbuktu,” “Marguerite,” (four César Awards) “Rams,” “Mustang,” “The People vs. Fritz Bauer,” “My Old Lady,” “Le Chef,” “Breathe In,” and the wonderful documentary, “Deli Man.” In yet another exciting project, Cohen has partnered with KCET, and will host a series of ten films he curated
from his vast library of over 700 films, many of which have been restored to their original condition. The series, which kicks off Friday, January 28th, consists of a cross-section of genres, from documentaries and musicals to comedies and dramas and will air Friday nights at 10:00 pm. Cohen recently sat down with a select group of journalists to discuss the new series as well as his fascinating background. Part 1 of this 2-part interview will focus on the upcoming KCET series, and the following has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes. Before we talk about the series, what is the genesis
LOCAL AUTHOR!!!
of the Cohen Media Group? Cohen: Cohen Media Group began in 2007 when I was fortunate enough to get together with the filmmaker responsible for “Frozen River.” We went to Sundance and won at Sundance. We licensed our film through Sony Pictures Classics. We went to the Oscars and were nominated in two major categories and also won some Spirit Awards. (More about the creation of “Frozen River” in Part 2) In 2010 we became a distributor of “Outside the Law,” which I licensed from StudioCanal. * We went back to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film. We’ve been there three times and received five nominations in total. We’re anxious to continue our run this year with “The Salesman,” Iran’s 2016 submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. This is a powerful film, which has already racked up three wins and six nominations.
Please talk about the upcoming Cohen Film Classics series you will be hosting on KCET-TV beginning in late January. Cohen: I am so thrilled to be with KCET and to be able to present these films through our collaboration. I’m a great PBS customer from the East Coast and I’ve heard the most wonderful things about KCET here in Los Angeles. It’s really a dream for me to sit here and talk about something that I have been so connected to throughout my whole life. You know that they are the largest independent public television station and play a vital role in the cultural fabric of southern California. They are non-profit award-winning programmers. I would like to partner with them on other projects. Why did you want to do this series? Cohen: Well, I’m not in this for the profit. I’m in this for the prestige and the association. There are ways that you, as a successful man, can give back. You can write checks, which is ok. But, I’d rather see where the money goes and do something that will affect the lives of others for the long term. I like the idea of preserving these films and making them available to people who remember them as well as also finding new audiences who have not seen these iconic films before. It would be helpful if you could give a capsule description of what the KCET audiences

David Lynch was one of the directors interviewed for “What Is Cinema?” which kicks off the KCET series hosted by Charles S. Cohen of the Cohen Media Group. January 25, 2017
will be seeing. Cohen: The first film that kicks off the series is “What is Cinema?” directed by Chuck Workman. I knew him through the fabulous editing on the Academy Awards. He did all those montages in the days when there was no digital editing. He did it the old fashion way, by splicing film together. For “What is Cinema?” Chuck interviewed some compelling auteurs including, Michael Winterbottom, Akira Kurosawa, David Lynch, Mike Leigh, Robert Altman, Costa-Gavras, and Michael Moore. He also interviewed a number of critics. What came out of those interviews is a very interesting take on cinema – the role it plays in society, and how and why people respond to it. Cohen: The second film in the series is “Sudden Fear” which was made in 1952 and stars Joan Crawford and Jack Palance. The story revolves around a successful Broadway playwright (Joan Crawford) who initially rejects a young actor (Jack Palance), but later falls in love and marries him. When the young actor learns that she plans to leave her fortune to a charity when she dies, he conspires with an old girlfriend to have her killed. I recently watched the film for the second time. What a great movie and what a beautiful Joan Crawford. I think it was Jack Palance’s first co-starring role of a major note. He is spooky in his own way. What a terrific little thriller and it will air on February 3rd. Cohen: The third film, which will air on February 10, is “Hangman Also Die,” a 1943 noir war film directed by Austrian director Fritz Lang. The film was written by John Wexley and Fritz Lang from a story by Bertolt Brecht, and costars Walter Brennan and Brian Donlevy. It’s an espionage thriller set in occupied Czechoslovakia. The story revolves around a successful plot by the Czech Resistance to assassinate Deputy ReichProtector - “Hangman” - Reinhard Heydrich - and the hunt by the Gestapo to track down the killers. Cohen: As a matter of fact, there are a few espionage thriller films in the series. “The Lady,” airing on February 17, is a film I licensed from the Toronto Film Festival when it premiered a couple of years ago. I became friendly with Luc Besson who I thought was a fabulous action filmmaker. It was an unusual departure for him to embrace the story of Aung San Suu Kyi, played by Michelle Yeoh. A Greek journey for the ages
Photo by Anthony Grant By Anthony Grant It was only meant to be a five-day stay in Athens, but it turned into more than two weeks. That’s the kind of thing that can happen when you happen upon the perfect hotel in the kind of neighborhood that the guidebooks haven’t gotten to, or figured out yet. Not that the Hotel Attalos is located in some forgotten precinct of the Greek capital: far from it. The three-star, 78-room hotel (www.attaloshotel.com) is located where the bustling
neighborhoods of Monastiraki and Psirri converge. The former is on the edge of the Plaka, the famous quarter of tavernas and souvenir stalls right below the Acropolis. The latter is a bit grittier, where the flea market and secondhand stores rub shoulders with quirky cafés, hardware stores and boisterous food markets. A bit like New York, with a Mediterranean twist. From the rooftop bar of the hotel as well as from some of the rooms with private
balconies, you get a sweeping view of the Acropolis. To see some of the treasures that were found there you can go to the Acropolis Museum or the National Archaeological Museum. Both are extraordinary and have temporary exhibitions that are well worth a detour. You’ve heard of the Oracle of Delphi? Well, there was another one too, called Dodona, and it’s the subject of this mesmerizing show called “The Oracle of Sounds.”
The Oracle was dedicated to Zeus and centered on the prophetic oak tree that with the rustle of its leaves would answer questions people had about of what lies ahead. The excavations conducted in Dodona have brought to light some thousands of questions carved in metal sheets of lead, several of which are on display here in Greek letters that are still legible, and have been translated into English. This fascinating exhibit was just extended to March 31. Now, the exhibit at the Archaeological Museum is guaranteed to stir your wanderlust. Called “Odysseys,” attempts to give an account of the adventurous journey of man through time considered from an abstract and symbolic perspective that draws its inspiration from the Homeric Odyssey. One hundred and eighty-four works that come either from the permanent exhibition or the rich in archaeological material storerooms of the Museum’s Collections and six loans, three from the Epigraphic Museum and three from the Acropolis Museum, are presented in an enchanting sequence of cultural
stratification. The interpretation of the ancient works through the symbolically charged poetry of C. P. Cavafy, G. Seferis, O. Elytis and Y. Ritsos imparts to the exhibits perhaps the most astute and exciting meaning, setting simultaneously a bridge with today through the modern poetic language. The show is organized along three lines: The Journey presents tangible evidence of the ceaseless quest of man for raw materials, knowledge and ideas. The variegated cargo of a conceptual ship and the myths that accompanied the sea journeys of ancient people create an allusive environment of adventure and knowledge. Ithacas are inspired by the homecoming (nostos) of Odysseus and devoted to the homelands of all people. In the Exodus, ancient creations symbolically demarcate great achievements of the human mind and spirit inviting each one of us to pick up the torch of creativity. The music for the exhibition is by courtesy of Vangelis Papathanassiou of “Chariots of Fire” fame from his works “Ithaca” and “VOICES - Dream in an open Place”. The Odysseys exhibit will stay at the museum through next fall and is a highlight of any visit to Athens now.
NATPE17 – Discovering the Future of TV
By Jackie Devereaux Miami, Florida – Movers and shakers in television programming met here last week to find the next hot shows that you’ll be watching in the future. From scripted dramas to reality shows to children’s animation, television programmers found content from the U.S. and 71 other countries to choose from. Who will make it to the top of the heap? Only time will tell, but everyone those who attended NATPE17, have a ton of follow-up to do. More than 5,000 television executives from all over the world gathered at the Fountainbleau and Eden Roc hotels on Miami’s luxurious South Beach for three days of seminars, workshops and market floor meetings. The old network big guns (ABC, CBS, and NBC) had booths around the Fontainbleau’s pool, while the rest of the pack had booths inside the Market Floor. Speakers and presenters held court at the Eden Roc hotel where participants attended workshops and panel discussions ranging from Scripted to Reality to Platforms, Brands & Advertising and Music. A series of Master Classes were offered that gave eager

Each corner turned in both hotels offered participants an opportunity to learn, meet new contacts and explore the growing worldwide television market. Television executives from Australia, Mexico, Russia, China, India, and Spain flew
into Miami for NATPE17. Jesus M. Higuera, the head of programming from ETB in the Basque country of Spain said, “I’m looking to find a home for a number of our shows in the U.S. market.” And he’s not the only one. Hundreds of execs from 72 countries were doing the same thing. How does someone rise to the top of the heap when there’s so much material to choose from? By establishing good contacts and

following up “like a love letter” afterwards said Jeanne and Mark Simon, TV pitch experts at SellYourTVConceptNow. com, who gave an insightful seminar on day three. Those who stayed to the end of the convention got a real treat from Aymon DeMauro, VP of Branded Entertainment Distribution with Discovery Communications at the workshop about Alternatives to Pitching with Chad Faltz. Attendees learned
about “time buys.” Currently, time buys are only available for the reality market, but “a good scripted show could make the cut,” DeMauro said but admitted that he doesn’t know “why scripted has not been accessible, but who knows what the future holds.” NATPE will host another conference in Budapest, Hungary from June 1922, 2017. Grab Your Seat Campaign
Postmodern Jazz group - entertainers. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Grab Your Seat Campaign, the concert, was held at the newly remodeled Richards Center for the Arts at the Palm Springs High School, formerly the Palm Springs High School Auditorium. The center was named for Rozene Supple who donated 2 million dollars for the renovation project. They did an amazing job to update the facility in every way from the look to the acoustics. They said they kept the original stage because so many famous people have performed on it and they wanted to keep that part of history. The event benefits the Palm Springs Unified School District Arts Programs that sustain the Arts in our schools. The Grab You Seat campaign is to allow patrons to grab a seat in your name or the name of a loved one for $500. They are trying to reach
a goal of $5 million dollars to support the ARTS programs for all students across the six cities in the Valley. The Budget for the arts in school has diminished so support is crucial to keep the arts, both visual and performing, in our schools in the Palm Springs Unified District. Patrick Evans was master of Ceremonies. Guest’s speakers included Sandra Lyon, superintendent of Palm Springs Unified School District and Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon. Ellen Goodman, Executive Director for The Foundation for the Palm Springs Unified School District as well spoke to the audience. Event chairs were Harold Matzner and Helene Galen, who also spoke about this new Center for the Arts. Debbie GreenDeb Len Production was the producer for the event. The Entertainer in this
new Richards Center was PostModern Jukebox. This is their initial performance in the Desert and the first performance on a whirlwind tour in the U. S. and Internationally. This group is different as the singers and band members are very talented performers in a unique style. They take the old ragtime and old-time jazz to a new level. The dancers and singers do a Charleston dance and other fun tricks that bring you back to another era without being dated. One of the performers is a woman who does an amazing job of tap dancing. There were solo performances by all members of the group, and some did double duty playing an instrument and singing as well. The emcee had an amazing voice and introduced all the other performers.

Trump signs executive order withdrawing US from TPP By Desert Star Staff With a stroke of a pen, President Donald Trump has unraveled the Trans-Pacific Partnership, withdrawing the US from the controversial free-trade pact. Without Washington’s participation, the TPP would have to be renegotiated or scrapped altogether. The largest global trade agreement in 20 years, the TPP would have included the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. It was championed by former President Barack Obama as a way to open Asian markets for American goods and create a trade bloc to counter China. Opposition to the TPP was one of the key planks of Trump’s presidential campaign, with the billionaire businessman calling the trade pact a “potential disaster” for the US. He said he would prefer bilateral trade deals
with individual TPP countries instead. Monday’s executive order signaled the new administration’s determination to address its priorities quickly. Vietnam backed out of the pact in November, citing uncertainty created by Trump’s election and the refusal of the US Congress to ratify the TPP. Trump has also targeted the North American Free Trade Association, which eliminated commercial barriers between the US, Canada and Mexico during the Clinton administration. If Wilbur Ross gets the Senate confirmation to head the Department of Commerce, he will be charged with renegotiating the trade deals, alongside US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and chief of the newly established White House Trade Council, Peter Navarro. “We are going to start renegotiating on NAFTA, on immigration and on security at the border,” Trump said on Sunday, after the
swearing-in ceremony for senior White House staff. Trump’s animosity for the TPP was shared by some of the Democrats, led by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. His rival in the November 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton, initially supported the trade pact.On Monday, Trump assembled chief executives
of major US corporations at the White House and promised to lower the tax and regulatory burden on doing business within the country. His administration will be scrapping free trade in favor of fair trade, he said. “The regulations are going to be cut massively, and the taxes will be cut with them,”
Trump said, warning that those who relocate factories will face a “substantial border tax.” Trump signed two more executive orders on Monday, freezing all federal government hiring – with the exception of the US military – and prohibiting federal funding to US organizations promoting abortion overseas.
By Desert Star Staff Wisconsin police have reached out to meth users on Facebook, encouraging them to get their meth tested at the police station to be sure they haven’t been duped into buying rock salt. The tongue-in-cheek offer was posted on the Sparta Police Department’s Facebook page after “an investigation” led to the discovery of fake meth among batches of the drug sold to unsuspecting users. “We understand how frustrating it is buying something and finding out it’s not what you thought you purchased... like ordering a large T-shirt
that turns out to be a size schmedium,” police wrote. The police department implored anyone with concerns that their meth may in fact be mere rock salt to come to the station for testing. They also extended this service to meth pipes, needles, and other drug paraphernalia. “We can only imagine how horrible a salty meth pipe is,” the post read, while urging drug users to call in without delay.Methamphetamine use in Wisconsin tripled between 2011 and 2015, according to a state-wide study published earlier this month by the FBI and Wisconsin
Department of Justice. The 2016 Wisconsin Methamphetamine Study examined use of the illicit drug over a year and a half and, based on analysis of methrelated arrests, concluded that usage had increased by up to 300 percent over four years. The police ‘free testing’ post got more than 7,000 shares as social media users wondered how many people would actually show up with their bag of meth in hand for free testing. It appears Sparta Police Department has a pretty sarcastic individual manning its Facebook page, judging by previous comments regarding traffic laws.

The chambers of commerce and convention and visitors bureaus in the Tri-Cities just unveiled a free app that lets locals and visitors “check in” at local breweries, cideries and bars on what they’re calling the Brewly Noted Beer Trail. Jenna Moore, director of sales at the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce, explained the value of the app and the “trail.” “Visitors like to come to a community and be able to taste something that’s unique and local to that region,” she
said, “so this gives them an opportunity to do that. And also, you know, obviously, there’s some incentive to go to more than one.” Moore said the small businesses on the Brewly Noted Beer Trail support a growing number of employees and other businesses, such as food trucks and local hotels. The project is a joint effort of the Johnson City Chamber and Bristol and Kingsport convention and visitors bureaus. Palm Canyon Theatre presents a musical comedy that delights
By Jack Lyons, Theatre and Film Critic Considering the mood that half of the country is in right now, a respite from the political machinations is definitely in order. It’s time for an evening of fun-filled entertainment that is sure to please anyone with a sense of humor and an appreciation for comedy along with silly and spectacular musical numbers, all executed with energy, style, and creativity. The Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) of Palm Springs has been ‘knocking ‘em dead’ with their showmanship and quality productions for years. The Layne Family producers are now presenting the crowd-pleasing musical “Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”; one of their splashiest and fabulously costumed musical productions in several seasons. The production mounted on the recently expanded stage boasts a cast of 32 singers, actors, and dancers. No one writes huge, successful, award-winning musical productions like Andrew Lloyd Weber, and his lyricist partner Tim Rice. Both men are multiple Tony and Academy Award winners and PCT has performed most of their musical theatre canon over the years. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, now on stage at PCT, is creatively directed, by veteran actor/ director Charles Harvey, who brings a wealth of experience
that cleverly breathes life into those fifty cast members, including a nine person onstage “kid’s choir” (perhaps ages six to ten?). With that many people on the Palm Canyon stage, director Harvey must feel what it’s like to direct a herd of cats. Instead, of stage mayhem, the audience is treated to an entertaining ensemble experience where everybody knows exactly what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. It’s a visual feast for the eyes and ears. This “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” musical is based on Biblical source material that tells the story of Joseph and his eleven, not-so-nice, brothers who sell him into a life of slavery and bondage for money. The libretto takes a lot of liberties with the original, in that it employs the addition of anachronisms like the Egyptians using telephones, I-Phones, wearing gym shoes, using modern day expressions and Western Cowboy attire for certain scenes and such. It’s a bit of a biblical ‘hoot’ in its execution which usually appeals to younger people. Think back to productions such as “The Rocky Horror Show” and “Young Frankenstein”, both seen at PCT not that long ago, and if memory serves, I believe I remember seeing “Joseph’s current director Harvey and his wife Kathy seated in the audience yelling dialogue lines to the actors on stage and
throwing popcorn and assorted items, as is the traditional custom when attending a performance of the play. Yes, director Harvey is just the man to pull off all the silliness and fun inherent in this show. There may be, however, just a few people expecting to see a traditional rendition of the bible story. If that’s the case, I’m afraid they’re not going to find that story on the PCT stage. What audiences who do attend will definitely find, is a thoroughly entertaining musical and a fun show; performed by a cast too large (52) to mention here in print. However, there are always stand-outs and this show is no exception. The two stars of the production are Julie Rosser Balbini who performs and sings as The Narrator in her lovely soprano,
and Scott Clinkscales who winningly sings and acts the title character of Joseph. Solid support comes from Shafik Wahhab as Pharoah, who plays and sings him as Elvis Presley complete with a “thank you, thank you very much” at the end of each chorus. It’s a spot-on hilarious performance. The technical department led by director Harvey includes Scenic and Lighting designs by PCT resident wizard J.W. Layne, who makes the normal stage space seem larger in order to accommodate its 52 performers. One can only speculate about the mayhem and chaos that is taking place backstage, while we see or hear none of it. Well Done, backstage crew! The gorgeous costumes are products of the creative
energy and talent of resident Costume Designer Derik Shopinski, and his associate Kathryn Ferguson. Costume assists come from Virginia Sulick, Char Childs, Lisa Goldberg, and Oksana Judy. Choreographer Jacqueline Le Blanc creates sharp, snazzy, and exciting dance routines for everyone, but really shines in the athletic and sensuous Pas de Deux number danced by Kate Antonov and German Pavan. Jeff Jones is the sound designer and Steven Smith is the Musical Director. The Palm Canyon Theatre is presenting a dazzlingly fun and entertaining show that runs through February 5, 2017. For reservations and ticket information call the box office at 760-323-5123. Don’t Miss It!

heroic naval officer as he takes the British fleet into battle. Cohen: “Dark Journey” airing March 3rd, was directed by Victor Saville and stars Cecil Parker, Conrad Veidt, and Vivien Leigh, who plays an Allied double agent living in Stockholm in 1915. Chief of Intelligence, played by Veidt, is assigned the task of catching her, but they fall in love with each other. Cohen: “The Beauty of the Devil,” based on the Faust legend is directed by the very successful French director René Clair who came to America and made such films as “I Married A Witch.” But, he eventually fell out of favor. “The Beauty of the Devil” stars Gérard Philipe, Michel Simon, and Nicole Besnard and tells the story of a prominent professor of alchemy who makes a bargain with the Devil that grants him youth, fame, and riches in exchange for his soul. This film is scheduled to air on March 10th and to my knowledge, it has never been aired on television. Cohen: Next up on March 17th is “The Thief of Bagdad,” an adventure fantasy directed by Raoul Walsh and stars Anna May Wong, Douglas Fairbanks,
Julanne Johnston, and Snitz Edwards. It’s a silent movie based on Arabian Nights. Fairbanks plays the dashing Ahmed, the thief who wins a princess. The film cost more than one million dollars to make, which was an extraordinary amount of money in 1924. It’s interesting to note that the silent black and white films of that era were not shown in black and white. They were shown with colored lenses that would alternate during different parts of the film and were accompanied by a live performance of an orchestral score. We went back and had a new score done. Cohen: “Jamaica Inn,” story by Daphne du Maurier and screenplay by Ed McBain, was Alfred Hitchcock’s last Britishbased film before he went to Hollywood to make “Rebecca.” He made a total of three du Maurier films, the last being “The Birds.” “Jamaica Inn,” will be shown on March 24th and stars a very young Maureen O’Hara, Charles Laughton, and Robert Newton. The O’Hara character discovers that her uncle heads a gang of ship wreckers and murderers who work for the local squire,
wonderfully played by Charles Laughton. The film played well last year at the Film Forum. Cohen: The last film in the series is “Chasing Madoff.” Directed by Jeff Prosserman, it’s one of the first films I licensed in the English language. The original title was “Fox Hounds” which I thought was a terrible title, so I changed it to “Chasing Madoff.” It is the fascinating story of Harry Markopolos, the original whistle blower, and his team of investigators during the ten-year struggle to expose the harrowing truth behind the infamous Madoff scandal. He had written a book called “No One Would Listen” in which said that no one would look at what was going on while it was happening because there were a lot of tell-tale signs. The film was made within a year of Madoff being busted and vilified. I think that’s a great way to end the series with a contemporary film.
well directed. They had great performances and they may have been overlooked. Buster Keaton was a genius. Hitchcock was a genius. There are a lot of wonderful films that we like.

core of Burma’s democracy movement. I didn’t know about this woman’s courageous incarceration in her house for years and the situation with her husband, writer Michael Aris (David Thewlis). I got to know Luc and his wife who produced the film. I also spent time with Miss Yeoh who is a fabulous actress. This is a great movie. You can see the director’s work in some of the action scenes. I always thought he did what Hollywood did best, but in his own French way. Cohen: Next up from our collection is the February 24th screening of “Fire Over England. ” Directed by William K. Howard, it was one of Vivien Leigh’s first films and was the first time she met Laurence Olivier, who co-starred in the film. Also costarring Raymond Massey and James Mason, it is a love story that takes place in 1937 during the rein of England’s Queen Elizabeth I. Olivier plays a young naval officer who discovers Spain’s plans to send the Armada against England. The Queen’s Lady-in-Waiting, played by Leigh, falls in love with the

As far as the rest of the films, we’ll decide as we go along. This is a very exciting series and certainly keeps within KCET’s history of presenting excellent programming. Cohen: Thank you…

Polar Plunge for Special Olympics
By Desert Star Staff KENNEWICK, Wash. Some hardy Washingtonians are taking a cold and invigorating dip this winter to raise money for the Special Olympics. In the Polar Plunge Series, people get charitable pledges to dive into freezing waters across the Evergreen State, starting with the Tri-Cities area on Saturday. While participants take the plunge, said Dan Wartelle, vice president for communications for Special Olympics Washington, said the 14,500 athletes they are raising money for are hitting the gym. “It’s a good match,” he said. “While you jump into some cold water to help athletes, the athletes are out there training and working honestly very hard to try to make it to the ultimate competition stage in the state of Washington, for Special Olympics Washington.” Plungers must raise at least $50 or $75, depending on where they dive in. There will be chances to plunge in Seattle, Spokane, Redmond and other cities through March. The state’s Special

Every year, hardy Washingtonians take a dive into frigid waters around the state to raise money for the Special Olympics. (Special Olympics Archive) Olympics Winter Games will be held in Wenatchee at the beginning of March. Athletes often are competing in local events, but Wartelle said some of them take time out of their busy schedule to be at the plunge. He said the Polar Plunge attracts a wide range of people to come out and support the Special Olympics, because
of the thrill of the event. “That’s the unique part about this event,” he said. “It really expands our reach and gets people more involved with the organization and a greater understanding of the Special Olympics, just simply because they want the challenge of diving in the water.” Wartelle said law enforcement plays a big role
in organizing and fundraising for the Polar Plunge Series. In Washington state, law enforcement raises nearly $700,000 annually for Special Olympics Washington. Details on the Polar Plunge are online at specialolympicswashington.org.

on Facebook, four people, including one of the suspects, have been transported to the Brooke Army Medical Center. The suspect is in a critical condition. Two victims
suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds and another was hospitalized because of “chest pains.”The second suspect, described by authorities as a “Hispanic
male wearing a hoodie,” fled the mall but was later caught, according to police.“Today’s deadly shooting at Rolling Oaks Mall is a tragedy for everyone involved and all of us affected,” Taylor said earlier in a Facebook statement. “It’s is absolutely senseless. This is the second time that a ‘Good Samaritan’ was killed trying to intervene in a crime to help the victim. It’s absolutely senseless,” McManus said. The San Antonio Police chief was referring to an incident during ‘Black Friday’ at a local WalMart. On November 25, a man tried to stop a reported domestic abuse scene, and was shot and killed by the man who was said to have been punching a woman. A woman at the scene was also hit by a stray bullet, and another by shrapnel during the incident.

CV Rep Theatre debuts a delightful musical
Janna Cardia and Tom Andrew. Photo courtesy of CVRep. Continued from Page 1 cast of singers that can act like those in “Baby The Musical”. Not only are all the three couples always in the moment with each other, there is an on-stage chemistry that leaps over the footlights into the audience that keep us totally engaged as well. It’s almost palpable and it’s infectious. As way of a bonus for the senior citizen crowd, the
only four letter word you will hear in this production is ‘love’. And as composer/ lyricist Burt Bacharach wrote years ago, “What the world needs now, is love, sweet love”, is so right on the mark. Theatre in all its forms is a collaborative effort. The story, in addition to its stars, features a ‘Greek chorus’ of four performer/singers, who not only provide the audience with background, but also get
The entire cast of BABY. Photo courtesy of CVRep. the opportunity, as various comedy characters, to join in the fun, as well. This ensemble includes: Jaci Davis, Joseph M. Dahman, Giulia Ethel Tomasi, and Jeff Stewart. A great deal of the credit for this crowd-pleasing production goes to director Celona, who does a tremendous job of ‘traffic management’ with the daunting quick scene and set changes required to make those multi-locations scenes
go smoothly and seamlessly. Also credit goes to Set Design wizard Jimmy Cuomo, and lighting designer Moira Wilkie Whitaker for creating enough space and illumination touches that allow the actors and singers to perform their magic. Under musical director Scott Storr’s baton and piano, the musical features local professionals who can be seen in venues all over the Coachella Valley. They are:
Danny Gutierrez; on keyboards; Dave Hitchings on percussion; Doug McDonald on guitar and Bill Saita on Bass. “Baby The Musical” is a terrific production that produces insight and knowing smiles as it entertains its audiences. It performs at CV REP Theatre in Rancho Mirage, and runs through February 12, 2017. Call the box office for reservations and ticket information at 760296-2966. Don’t Miss It!
O U R M I S S I O N : Tips to Refresh Yourself in the New Year
our mission:
By Desert Star Staff Want to update and improve yourself for the New Year? A few top-tobottom tweaks can help you look and feel your best Update Staples: Staples and basics don’t need to change with the seasons, however it’s important to update these elements when they’re worn out, no longer fit, or are simply outdated. Evaluate your shoes, bags, jackets with these criteria in mind and replace any items as needed. If there are items that you love that are in disrepair but you can’t imagine parting with, take this opportunity to re-sole and shine those shoes and replace that lost button. You’ll improve these items’ usefulness and breathe new life into them. You’ll also look more put together once these items are refurbished. Look Back: Refreshing your look doesn’t necessarily mean going ultra-modern. Sometimes a vintage look can make a bigger statement. Accessorize with a timepiece that is elegant, www.desertstarweekly.com
classic and will never go out of style. It will serve as a nice complement to any outfit, whether you’re headed to work or going to a party. To combine style with precision, consider the A168WG-9VT from the Casio Vintage Collection, which has a sleek gold colored band and a digital display. Get Groomed: A new haircut can do wonders. Even if you’re growing your hair long, a trim can make you look polished and groomed. Not only that, it eliminates split ends and keeps hair healthy. For extra edge, men may want to consider indulging in a professional shave while they are at the barber. Follow a Trend: Take a cue from the color experts and add a few items to your wardrobe with Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2017, “Greenery.” A yellow-green hue evocative of spring, this color can add a bright element to your look and is totally on-trend. By looking back and looking ahead, you can get inspired to update your look for a new year. StatePoint
