R.I.P. Kobe Sports world in shock after death of ‘global icon’ Kobe Bryant By Desert Star Staff The death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash on Sunday has brought forth an outpouring of grief from many of his fellow professionals, as well as from prominent members of the global sporting community.
The 18-time NBA AllStar, aged 41, died after a helicopter in which he was a passenger crashed after bursting into flames in the city of Calabasas in Los Angeles County, according to US media. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said that
NBC PS News Staff During the 11th round, an eighth grader’s correct spelling of the word “syllabus” punched his ticket Friday to represent the Palm Springs Unified School District in the countywide competition in March. If he wins the county competition, Dominic Carrillo, who attends Cielo Vista Charter School in Palm Springs, could land a spot representing Riverside County at the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in May in Maryland. Forty-two students in grades 4 through 8 competed Friday in the 43rd annual Spelling Bee of Champions, which was held at Desert
Hot Springs High School, according to PSUSD spokeswoman Joan Boiko. Luke Jin, a seventh-grader at Cielo Vista Charter School, and Antonio Maldonado Espino, an eighth-grader at Nellie Coffman Middle School in Cathedral City, were runners-up, Boiko said. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert held their 21st Annual Hall of Fame golf tournament, dinner, and pro cup challenge on January 26th and 27th. The event was held at Ironwood Country Club. Master of Ceremonies was Dr. Raj Sinha and Rich Gilgallon. Gilgallon and Sinha both took over auctioneer duties for the Live Auction of several items that brought in over 23,000 much-needed dollars for the Big Brother Big Sisters programs. There was also a large silent auction with a variety of items up for anyone’s pleasure to bid on.
President of the Board of Trustees Bob Iglehart gave the welcoming speech and asked that all board members stand to be recognized. He thanked all for coming and wishing good luck to all who played golf on Monday. The Honoree this year was the baseball great Steve Garvey. He was honored along with many great athletes from years past, that included Yogi Berra, George Brett, Merlin Olson, Jim Plunkett, Lee Travino, Lynn Swann, Tom Flores, Dave Stockton and many more. tournament for prizes, and the Amateurs will vie for trophies. Steve Garvey spoke to the crowd and told some emotional stories. The first thing he announced with a heavy heart was the death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter in a plane crash that morning. He said that working hard and having a bit of talent and lucky to be able to play on a great team is a blessing. In some sports, you have to be a team player, unlike golf and tennis. One has to learn to give back to people to help them start on life’s journey. Kids need a mentor they can talk to and share their fears, anxieties,
and dreams. Most of these kids in this program have only one parent. The BIGS take care of the LITTLES as they are referred to. The BIGS is proud of their mentoring, and the LITTLES feel like family, a great feeling for all. Garvey told about his life and said when he was just 7, his father had to pick up the Dodgers from the airport. He was asked to be a batboy and spent the next 7 years as a sometimes batboy. He met men like Jackie Robinson and Mickey Mantle, who gave him advice. Garvey’s father had asked him to skip school for that day, which turned out to
be a momentous occasion for him and his future. He noted you don’t have to be an idol or celebrity to make a difference in life because everyone has something to give to help make a better life for someone else. Garvey felt he was blessed with great mentors, and he knows that others must feel the same after they start the giveback idea. He said that giving back is the heart and soul of this crazy world we live in. A great speech from someone who knows how to give back and feel blessed to be able to do that.

Women Working in later years should Learn Use of One Device

or iPhones. Learning to use these tools will help take away the concern of getting that new job, not only in obtaining a job but going to the job. Although the opportunities in the workforce may be limited, finding the right job in later years does not come without It’s hurtling. A primary one understands how to use the tools used in today’s marketplace. Generally, Women approach retirement with the deck stacked against them financially. They have worked for lower pay than their male counterparts (in the U.S., they earned 80.5% of men’s median earnings). Many have most likely have missed time from the workforce to raise children and care for family members in need of aid (sometimes both at once) and often during their working years, find themselves shut out of advancement and promotions along with the commensurate raises. They are usually getting by on less money before retirement than they really need, which, not only, puts them in a precarious financial position during their working years but makes it is tough for them to set aside money for retirement. Many women will find that the income needed in retirement is not enough, and they need jobs to help them get by. Health conditions and age can keep them from getting jobs, even if they wish to work. The “Glass Ceiling” was tough enough to break through, now
they must breakthrough with the “Grey Hair Ceiling,” which may keep them from getting jobs. Jobs which require being on your feet all day are sometimes too straining for older women, thus having an office and computer skills are the jobs they should seek; however, many women fear to try to learn new devices when they are older, since they did not grow up in the era of computers and iPhones. The smartest “One objective” one should have is to learn to use your iPhone efficiently. It is not as difficult as we sometimes believe. An excellent way to start is by watching videos on U-tube or by getting someone to teach you. Many Senior centers also offer these classes. The knowledge of learning to use iPhones will lead to understanding how to use
computers, as they are mostly the same type of devices. Having an iPhone will also add to your safety going to the job. Your first goal when getting an iPhone should be to enter all-important contacts, along with the addresses and contact information. By storing essential contacts, one can ask the Cellphone (“Siri”) for information or directions to locations which they are not familiar with. This eliminates the problem of getting lost and will ease the frustration of getting to appointments and locating the best route to get there. If running late to meet for a date, one can ask their phone to call a contact on their list. Saving time and stress. This convenience helps in staying focused when driving and removes the fear of traveling. There are so many ways this device
will save the day. Learning electronic devices will eliminate the anxiety that can surround getting the job you wish. As you enter the secondlongest phase in your life, make an informed, active role in getting it right. With appropriate guidance and thoughtful planning, you will be able to enjoy working longer. And, if the fact that staying active, leads to longevity and mental alertness, you will feel younger, stay happier. D.D., Cypress Dear Mr. Richardson, I submitted a formal Dear M.F., M.H., and D.D.: application to my HOA for So long as you comply the installation of solar panels with reasonable restrictions on my roof, believing that January 29, 2020
Civil Code section 714 is quite clear that my requested installation can be “reasonably” restricted but not denied. I have since heard that the HOA lawyer advised the board that they could, in fact, deny my application if they were to come up with “3 good reasons.” Does this sound plausible to you? Where exactly is the law on rooftop solar in common interest developments? Thank you for your insight. Best, R.O., Whittier Dear R.O.: If your HOA is looking for reasons to deny solar installations, they (and the attorney) already are on the wrong track. The law is clear as to what restrictions are “reasonable” (see previous answer) and lists permissible conditions on approval. A “good reason” is found in either Civil Code 417, 417.1, or 4746, and just one is enough if the requesting homeowner refuses to cooperate. In past years, condominium associations had often denied solar installations because they would alter common area (the roofs). Now,
even a shared roof can be used for solar installation, so long as the requesting owner obtains a solar site survey showing a fair distribution of available shared roof space (Civil Code 4746(b)(1)). Associations can under Civil Code 714 and 4746 require owners to have insurance and to take responsibility for any cost or damage caused by the solar installation. This is best documented by a written agreement between the owner and the association, which agreement should then be recorded on the title of the unit so that future owners have notice of the agreement. Sincerely, Kelly

5 Tips to Help Older Adults Be Healthier in 2020
By Desert Star Staff For many, the new year is about establishing goals for the year ahead. But where should you start? As we age, an increasing number of us link our emotional and physical well-being to our overall health. After all, you can’t do the things you’d like if you aren’t healthy. With that in mind, Cigna and its Medicare Advantage (MA) fitness partner, the Silver&Fit Healthy Aging and Exercise Program, share these five tips to help older adults get fitter and stronger and be less stressed and happier in 2020: 1. Hit the gym. Exercise is a proven way to help you get fitter and stronger, improve balance, lose weight, reduce blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, manage pain and even be more social. Many gyms offer such options as free weights, machines, pools, classes, private instructors and other amenities that can inspire you to try new things. Prefer working out with others? Group classes can help you discover a new exercise, stick to a schedule and find
exercise buddies. If you’re new to exercise, remember that slow and steady is the way to build good habits, avoid injury and achieve health goals. It’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Can’t afford a gym membership? You may be surprised to learn that many MA plans offer exercise programs at top fitness centers and YMCAs for no extra cost. Check your plan for details. 2. Nourish your body. For optimal health, nourish your body with healthy, energizing foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and healthy oils, such as olive oil and sesame oil. Limit pre-packaged, processed foods. Set an achievable goal. Try cutting out one unhealthy food each month, such as sugary soft drinks or chips. Your body will love you for it! Also, stay hydrated, especially when exercising. At the same time, eliminate unhealthy habits, such as smoking or drinking alcohol in excess. With an MA plan, you may be able to get help with smoking
cessation products or alcohol counseling at no extra cost. 3. Stress less. Stress can be toxic and debilitating. Develop a “PLAN” to deal with it. According to Cigna’s Dr. Stuart L. Lustig, this includes identifying a Period of time to unwind, a Location to destress, an Activity to enjoy and the Name of someone with whom you can talk. Yoga, tai chi and meditation may help you cope with stress, as well as going for walks, listening to music, comedy or audio books -- or even coloring. If you’re experiencing extreme stress, talk to your doctor. Remember, the mind and body are connected, and stress takes its toll on physical health. 4. Get social. According to a 2018 Cigna survey, loneliness in America has reached epidemic levels. Nearly half of Americans report sometimes or always feeling alone (46 percent) or left out (47 percent). Loneliness has been shown to negatively impact physical and mental health. Alleviate loneliness by taking one proactive step each week. For example, call or get coffee with friends or family, join a club or volunteer. You
can also connect with other active adults on social media. Check out the inspirational health and fitness posts on the @SilverandFit Facebook page and join in the conversations. 5. Practice gratitude. Happiness comes with thankfulness. Think about
people and things you feel grateful for, and start a gratitude journal. By doing your best to incorporate these five tips into your life, you’ll kickstart your journey toward a healthier 2020. StatePoint
Anxious About the Economy? New Survey Reveals Your Next Steps
By Desert Star Staff Economic analysts increasingly predict that the U.S. will soon experience a recession, and a recent survey by CFP Board/ Morning Consult shows many Americans agree:
55 percent of respondents believe a recession will occur in the next year. Roughly three quarters of respondents said an economic downturn would affect their household, with more than a third projecting it would have a major impact.
Experts agree that developing and sticking with a prudent, long-term financial plan is key to protecting yourself against market swings, and the survey findings underscored the value of partnering with a financial
advisor before and during a recession. Sixty-seven percent of respondents who are working with a financial advisor said they would feel prepared if a recession began in the next 12 months, compared to 38 percent of those not working with an advisor. In addition, 77 percent of people working with an advisor said they are confident their advisor would successfully manage their finances through a down market. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professional can help you bring all of the pieces of your financial life together and provide confidence that your finances can withstand the pressures of an economic downturn. Of the survey respondents who work with a CFP professional, 73 percent reported feeling more prepared for a potential recession now than they did in 2008, during the Great Recession.
Trained to give you a “big picture” view of financial solutions and develop a plan that is tailored to your specific goals and interests, a CFP professional will help you set long- and short-term goals and will periodically review and adjust your financial plan as needed to ensure you stay on track to reach those goals. A CFP professional will also help you understand the implications of your financial choices, providing competent and ethical advice that supports sound financial decision-making and avoids impulsive actions. To find a CFP professional near you, visit www.letsmakeaplan.org. Partnering with a financial advisor may be one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from feeling the effects of a dramatic market decline. StatePoint

FBI requested interview with Prince Andrew on Jeffrey Epstein case
By Desert Star Staff US federal prosecutors have requested an interview with Britain’s Prince Andrew about the late sex-offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein, an attorney for the southern district of New York confirmed on Monday. Speaking outside the mansion formerly owned by Epstein, attorney Geoffrey Berman said Andrew has not yet responded to the FBI’s request and has offered “zero cooperation” so far. That’s despite the British royal earlier saying that he would be willing to help “any appropriate law enforcement agency” in conducting their investigations into sexual assault claims made against Epstein and the co-
conspirators who aided him. “[Prince Andrew] publicly offered, indeed in a press release, to cooperate with law enforcement investigating the crimes committed by Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirators,” Berman continued. Andrew’s friendship with Epstein has come under scrutiny in recent months, leading him to address criticisms in a car crash BBC interview in November, which prompted even more accusations about the relationship and forced him to step back from his public duties as part of the royal family. Berman gave no specific details as to the information the FBI would be hoping to learn
from Andrew, but said Epstein would not have been able to carry out his crimes without help from co-conspirators.
Epstein died while in custody in a New York prison in August and his death was ruled a suicide, though the
circumstances surrounding it led many to believe foul play was involved.

Census 2020: Removing Barriers for Communities of Color By Desert Star Staff DENVER -- People of color make up more than 30% of Colorado’s population, and civic leaders are working to ensure all residents are counted in the upcoming census - a once-adecade survey that determines how the state is represented in Congress, and whether $13 billion in federal tax dollars a year will return to Colorado. Deidre Johnson, CEO and executive director with The Center for African-American Health, said an accurate count is necessary to fund school lunch programs, health services, road improvements and more. “Our community is a special place to live,” Johnson said. “In order to keep our community special for the next generation, it’s up to all of us to participate in the 2020 census.” An African-American Complete Count Committee

has formed to address some of the distrust of government among people of color, and is tapping neighborhood voices including religious leaders and educators to increase participation. Advocates also are reaching out to immigrant and refugee communities, and a curriculum for English as Second Language students on the importance of the census is set to launch in February. Last summer, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to add a citizenship question to the census, but many immigrants remain skeptical about giving the government personal information. The Constitution requires a count of all people living in the country, regardless of immigration status, and Johnson said filling out the 10-minute survey will not put families in harm’s way. “Getting counted in
the census tells our leaders what our community needs, and that our voices and opinions matter,” she said. “It’s safe, easy and secure. In
Colorado, everyone counts.” All data collected in the census is protected and will not be shared with other government agencies, and

ICE Accused of Brutal Treatment in WA Traffic Stop
Protesters line up on Friday outside an immigrant holding station in Ferndale, Wash., where they believe a man brutally handled by ICE was being held. (Community to Community Development) By Desert Star Staff Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are being accused of brutally taking a Washington man into custody. A farmworker, who only wants to be identified by his
first name, Madardo, was in the car with his wife and children when ICE pulled him over in Everson. According to his wife, agents aggressively asked Madardo to open his door, hurling racial slurs at him, but
he refused. The agents called for backup, and when the man still refused their orders, they smashed his window and dragged him from the car. Australia Hernandez Cosby is a local community
organizer with the immigrant farmworkers’ rights group Community to Community Development. “The father exercised his right to say, you know, ‘Hey, y’all have a warrant signed by a judge?’ And they’re like, ‘No, we don’t. We’re above the law,’” Hernandez Cosby said. “That was a really prominent quote there that they said they were above the law.” ICE said Madardo has been voluntarily returned to Mexico on three separate occasions, although they did not say he had a criminal record other than entering the country illegally. The agency added breaking a car window is routine in law-enforcement work when someone refuses to comply with the law. Madardo is in custody at the Northwest ICE processing center in Tacoma. Hernandez Cosby said she’s heard reports of escalating tactics from ICE across the state, such as
forced entry into cars and houses. However, she said this case has hit close to home. “He works in our community, he lives here with his children. They’re part of the community. They help support our community with agriculture,” she said. “And we just don’t need that. We don’t need family members like this taken. These shouldn’t be priorities for ICE or anyone to be separating families.” Community to Community Development said there is a connection between the arrest and the hours-long detainment of more than 60 IranianAmericans at the Canadian border earlier this year, noting both took place in Whatcom County and under Customs and Border Patrol’s watch. Local Hospitals On High Alert For Coronavirus
Daytona Everett NBC PS Hospitals around the U.S. are on high alert as new patients walk through the doors. Health officials from local hospitals say they’re getting alerts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention every day about the dynamic disease. Eisenhower Medical Center said it updated its electronic medical record with a new question: Have you traveled to China in the last 30 days? A new case of Coronavirus was found in Chicago. A woman in her 60’s returned from Wuhan, China, last week. “I am pleased to report she is clinically doing well and is in stable condition,” Dr. Allison Arwady, Commissioner of Chicago Dept. of Public Health, said. Health officials are monitoring her contacts as well as those of the first patient in Seattle. “So they’re following these people who have been exposed or who have
come from China for at least 14 days for symptoms,” Michael Conners, an infection preventionist for Eisenhower Medical Center, said. Eisenhower, along with other hospitals, is constantly learning how the new Coronavirus works. “The virus spreads through the air, not so much touch to touch,” Conners said. “So if you touch the virus on the surface, you would have to then touch your face, bring it up to your mouth.” The virus, stopping short of a global health emergency, according to the World Health Organization. “At this point, they’re not sure how easily it transmits from person to person,” Conners said. Coronavirus has killed at least 26 and sickened more than 800. At least 50 possible cases in the U.S. are under investigation. The CDC is advising against non-essential travel there and urging travelers to
the country to take precautions. “Every time we do step out, we come back, we make sure we change our clothes and take a shower,” Ken Zurek, a traveler in China, said. Screenings continue at U.S. airports, but health experts admit infected travelers not yet feeling ill could slip by. States are reviewing infectious-disease procedures.
“We have extensive plans in place for pandemic situations and would work with public health and CDC if it became that serious,” Conners said. “But yes, I believe the resources are available within the state, within the hospital, to handle the situation.” Meanwhile, the CDC is rushing to get rapid test kits to local health departments.
Tests have come back negative on at least 11 people. They advise anyone who’s feeling ill and has recently returned from Wuhan or has had contact with someone who has to call ahead to their doctor’s office so appropriate precautions can be taken. Source: NBC Palm Springs

Healthy Kentucky, says only around $3 million is budgeted for tobacco prevention and cessation efforts. He says the state needs to work harder to stop the next generation from becoming hooked on nicotine. “Vaping products are considered tobacco products and consequently, they would be under this law,” he points out. “And we’ve seen an epidemic in the use of those products by young people.”
The bill is sponsored by Republican Sens. Ralph Alvarado of Winchester and Danny Carroll of Paducah. According to a 2019 survey, 53% of high school students in the Commonwealth have tried e-cigarettes. The bill now heads to the House for consideration. Chandler adds passing Senate Bill 56 would also help the state comply with a new federal law, known January 29, 2020
as the Tobacco-Free Youth Act, that raises the national minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21. He says at least 19 states already have passed similar legislation. “Studies have shown that if you raise the age to 21, middle-schoolers, highschoolers, are much less likely to get hold of those products,” Chandler points out. The state Cabinet for Health and Family Services
says more than 8,000 Kentuckians die of tobaccorelated illnesses each year. The agency also estimates that annual health care costs for treating people with smoking related diseases tops $1.2 billion. 75 years on, death camp survivors recall the Red Army liberation of Auschwitz
By Desert Star Staff Evgeny Kovalev was captured by the Nazis during a partisan scouting mission in 1943. Loaded onto a freight train cattle cart, he had no idea he was being taken to Auschwitz and was oblivious as to the hell that awaited him there. Now, 75 years after the Red Army liberated the notorious death camp in January 1945, Kovalev recalls his days of horror. “We were crammed into these trains and sent somewhere. It was a very long road — at least a day and a night,” he says. The train carrying Kovalev and other Soviet prisoners eventually arrived at Oswiecim Station, just a few minutes away from the Auschwitz camp — but still, they had no way to know where they really were. Gates of hell “Everything was lit up, bright lamps all around the camp. So bright, you could see a needle in the grass… We didn’t have the faintest idea what a concentration camp even was. We knew nothing”. As soon as they arrived, he remembers, women and young children were separated and grouped to
one side. Kovalev himself was only 14 years old, but he was sent to the opposite side and joined a line of other prisoners. They were watched by dogs and SS soldiers armed with machine guns. They marched us to the sanitary inspection building, a big barracks. Inside, they cut everyone’s hair, sprayed us with water, put some ointment on our skin. Then they sent us to cold showers. At the exit, they tattooed numbers on our hands. Kovalev was assigned to block 32 at the ‘Kanada’ section, where inmates worked in warehouses, unloading the luggage and sorting through the belongings of other prisoners as they arrived on trains. “People were arriving from Russia, Hungary... they were bringing prisoners from everywhere,” Kovalev says. “The job was to unload the trains, undress the people, take everything off of them and take them to the crematorium.” They drove a lot of people inside, shut all the doors, and turned on the gas. Within 5 to 7 minutes, everyone was dead. Working to survive The Sonderkommando unit, comprised mostly of
Children pictured after the Soviet liberation of Auschwitz © Reuters Jews, was then forced to burn the dead bodies and remove the ashes, Kovalev explains. Continually fearing for their own lives, the prisoners took the ashes out to bury in the fields or threw them into the Vistula river. Another unit was tasked with sorting through valuable remains like jewelry and gold teeth. Kovalev himself was assigned to a team-building vegetable storage sheds. “I dug basements, built walls, and poured concrete.

We worked like that for a very long time,” he says. While being able to carry out manual labor increased a prisoner’s chances of survival significantly, the threat of death always hung in the air. Each week, Kovalev remembers, there was a selection process carried out by the camp’s chief doctor Josef Mengele, where prisoners were stripped naked near the furnaces. “I survived the selection three times,” he says. After a long trek across Poland, fighting back the Germans in every town and village along the way, Red Army soldiers finally reached Auschwitz on January 27, 1945. “You can probably imagine how we felt when we were rescued,” Kovalev says. “We were crying tears of joy.” My most vivid memory is when the Soviet troops came and set us free… I don’t know how to explain it, I was so emotional… we never expected to live through it. Rewriting history Years later, at a forum in Krakow, Kovalev was surprised to hear people say it had been American troops who really liberated Auschwitz. He was thankful when Poland’s president at the time,
Tests Show Toxic PFAS Contaminate Water
By Desert Star Staff As the Trump administration rolls back vital clean water protections, new lab tests have found toxic fluorinated chemicals in almost every water sample from 44 locations in 31 states and the District of Columbia. PFAS, used in the hundreds of everyday products, are called “forever chemicals” because they build up in our bodies and don’t break down. Very small doses have been linked to cancer, immune and reproductive harm and other diseases. Of the samples tested by the Environmental Working Group, only one had no www.desertstarweekly.com
detectable PFAS, and only two others had PFAS below levels that pose a health risk. But according to Scott Faber, Vice President for Government Affairs at Environmental Work Group, there are still no federal requirements to filter the chemicals from tap water or to clean up contaminated sites. “These findings lend new urgency to efforts by state and federal officials to reduce ongoing PFAS releases into water supplies and to clean up legacy PFAS pollution,” Faber said. Some of the highest concentrations were found in samples from major metropolitan areas. In 2014,
PFAS contamination in Hoosick Falls, New York, drew national attention to the problem. PFAS has been detected in the water of almost 1,400 communities nationwide. Robert Allen, mayor of Hoosick Falls, pointed out that it wasn’t addressed in his town’s water until 2016 when Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared it a hazardous substance. “It gave the state legal authority and the resources of the state superfund program to investigate, implement filtration, and force the responsible parties to cover the costs,” Allen said. He said levels of PFAS in the blood of Hoosick Falls January 29, 2020
residents has dropped by about 50% since filtration was started four years ago. EWG tested water samples for 30 different PFAS compounds, five-times more than an EPA study in 20142015. Ken Cook, president of EWG, noted that on average, their testing found six or seven different PFAS chemicals in the samples they tested.
Aleksander Kwasniewski, took the floor and rightly thanked the Soviet Army instead. Wladyslaw Osik, a Polish Auschwitz survivor, is similarly angered by efforts to write the Red Army’s role out of history. “I have never questioned the merits of these [Soviet] soldiers. I have always been grateful — and representatives of Russia should be at the celebrations in Warsaw”. “People tell us that there was no liberation… but if there was no Red Army, then I wouldn’t be here,” he says. Polish President Andrzej Duda failed to extend an invite to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the national memorial ceremony in Auschwitz on Monday — and the two countries are embroiled in a diplomatic spat, both accusing each other of historical revisionism. To Osik, sidelining Russia from these events is a “huge mistake,” — but he acknowledges that the atmosphere has been brewing for years. Yet, for him, the political squabbles of today are not what matters most. “My mother returned from Oswiecim to Warsaw. That’s all I know,” he says.
“Because we found some types of PFAS that have not been found in drinking water before, we know that this contamination problem is not only affecting more people, but has a wider range of contaminants that we need to be worried about,” Cook said. A bill to address PFAS contamination recently passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, but President Trump has threatened to veto it if it gets to his desk.

HOROSCOPES ARIES
Experiences and thoughts, dreams and visions come quickly these days. It’s as if visions make up your daily reality. You’re being called to study and research, discover (or create) groups that support and belong to you, forging a template for community. You are to negotiate fear because you know it’s no longer useful. Wisdom’s coming. It would be good to study the art and science of astrology.
TAURUS Your future is in front of you. It’s asking you to help create a large portion of everyone else’s future; to lead with others in partnership and cooperation; to discuss new era visions others can uphold and bring into form and matter. Careful if you carry too many responsibilities. You need to ask for help every now and then, something you never do. Take care of your health. Do you need someone by your side? Call them.
GEMINI You might have the desire and aspiration to take up a new study, return to school, learn a new profession, travel far away and/or ask for an expanded job description. It seems as if you’ll travel to one or more communities in order to visit friends, assess living there and review their spiritual emphasis and orientation. Daily work strengthens your body. Consider your resources and finances. Pray over them

each day with gratitude. Judge all that you have, including yourself, as deeply worthy.
CANCER Great benefits, at first very subtly, begin to fall into your life. Later you realize a joy has quietly entered your life as if on little cat’s feet. You find your thinking is reshaping itself. You become a receiving, transmitting, intuitive, perceptive agent and visions become more and more available. Allow nothing to stress or impose demands upon you. Your fear could do this. Love neutralizes fear.
LEO You become more and more aware that you’re working with powerful cosmic forces these days. You are a powerful force, too, to others. Notice that people around you may be acting these forces out in their behaviors. This is an extraordinary piece of information…to know that people in our environments act out planetary movements. Observe all work realities. Remember also that from loss comes a profound new life. It is a good time to be creative now.
VIRGO Take hold of the family resources and begin to work carefully with them, restructuring, making changes, rearranging all financial comings and goings. Place more into savings; use the money for tangible goods.
Use it also to prepare for the future when goods may not be as available. Who in your daily life, including your work world, would you consider your community? If no one, then begin visualizing one right where you live.
LIBRA Some shift and/or transformation, something from the past or something deeply forgotten, something expansive, something important in your domestic world – all these are creating changes in your sense of self-identity. Something also, is creating more discipline in your life. Perhaps there is a distance or a withholding or an absence or a task needing to be completed that will bring a new depth of feeling (and forgiveness) to your personal world. Think good fortune, health and healing, order and structure. “Be of love, more careful than of anything.”
SCORPIO Your personal seed thought is the word “creativity.” Study this word from all levels, and then list for yourself all the ways you are creative. Then list all the ways you wish to be creative. Then list all those you consider creative. Then define the word creative. From these exercises create an art piece that is an expression of your joys and sorrows, enjoyments, talents and abilities, hopes, wishes and dreams. The creative field is wide open now. Bring it down and in. Like a mudra.
SAGITTARIUS Everything about you is of value. It’s also very personal, very inner and the nature of your potential opens in direct relation to your spiritual beliefs and endeavors. Venus is overseeing your domestic reality. You have the opportunity to make great things occur, especially if you work ceaselessly with the art of gratitude (for everything). Then you’re bestowed with great blessings and grace. Grace is an esoteric word for Initiation, a change in consciousness, which you’re going through. You laugh…
CAPRICORN You’re inspired to study family and relatives seeking your history so you can have a realistic (building to compassionate) view of where you came from and who you are. This gives you stability and a sense of self within a cycle of history. Sometimes in families misunderstood communications occur and realities are lost. It’s a cross between political idealism and freedom. Family is more important than politics. There’s a mantram that is useful to recite daily. “Let reality govern my every thought and truth be the master of my life.”
feelings, hopes and needs. Try not to overspend and know there are financial benefits coming your way. Also realize when you help others, your well-being and self-identity grow exponentially. It’s time for you to be in community. You’re needed there. In the meantime, careful with communication. Love more.
PISCES You will, day by day, begin to experience a greater freedom of identity, much of which has been hidden in a cloud of unknowing for the past several years. You will experience a new destiny, a celebration, a bit of self-indulgence, horizons widening, opportunities appearing and expanding, projects initiated with beauty and the arts more and more incorporated in daily life. Feds Lay Out Recovery Plan for Endangered Bumble Bee
In addition to the Midwest and East Coast, the rusty patched bumble bee was also common in many parts of Canada. (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service) By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. -- A certain kind of bumble bee that once thrived in the Midwest and along the East

Coast is now endangered, and federal officials are moving forward with plans to reverse the population decline of the insect.
The rusty patched bumble bee was added to the federal Endangered Species List in 2017. Experts say the bee’s population has been wiped January 29, 2020
out by nearly 90% and it’s only present in about a dozen states, including Wisconsin. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced a plan to help this pollinator stage a comeback. Agency spokeswoman Georgia Parham says the plan centers around habitat fixes. “Creating and restoring habitat in areas where the bee now exists, and creating habitat in other parts of its historic range,” she explains. The agency says exposure to pesticides and a disease-causing pathogen also contributed to the population decline. The Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting public comments on the recovery plan, which will be used as a guide for conservationists to try to get the rusty patched bumble bee off the endangered list. The agency was sued by the Natural Resources
Defense Council for not moving fast enough, but that case was settled. Parham says the bee has been able to hang on in Midwestern states because there’s still a lot of prairie lands it can use as habitat. In addition to federal action, she says backyard planters in these areas can also help the bee recover. “People that like to attract pollinators and butterflies,” she points out. “If you’re doing that, you’re going to create habitat for species like the rusty patched bumble bee.” The chubby looking bee got its name because of the distinct black and yellow rusted patch that runs along its back. The public comment period for the recovery plan runs through Feb. 24.

Meet the ‘super pretty’ tennis umpire setting pulses racing at the Australian Open
By Desert Star Staff While the action heats up on the court at the Australian Open, tennis fans online have been waxing lyrical about one of the officials maintaining fair play during the tournament – Serbian umpire Marijana Veljovic. Usually, the official sat in the umpire’s chair receives little attention until a debatable line call or a warning is issued, and a player starts to remonstrate with them. And, sure enough, the umpire in Roger Federer’s quarter-final win over Tennys
Sandgren found herself the target of attention after the usually-unflappable Swiss star was handed a warning for a verbal obscenity during his come-from-behind win. But it wasn’t the umpire’s officiating of the match that caught the imagination of the fans. Put simply, fans were falling over themselves to declare their admiration, or indeed love, for Veljovic. — doublefault28 Didn’t think I’d ever say this but I’m in love with an Australian Open chair
— Eric Neither Roger Federer nor Tennys Sandgren seemed to run out of reasons to go talk to this Australian Open chair umpire — Joe Mulder — doublefault28 It wasn’t just the fans who noticed the striking figure sat in the umpire’s chair. Women’s tennis star Genie Bouchard – who has received plenty of online attention herself – tweeted to say: “The umpire in this Roger/Tennys match is super pretty.” the umpire in this roger/
tennis match is super pretty — Genie Bouchard Yo, can they alert us when Marijana Veljovic is the umpire for tennis matches?! I think I’m in love — Joe Mastoloni But, behind her striking looks is a dedicated, determined official who has worked tirelessly to reach the top of her profession. Veljovic earned her umpire’s gold badge in 2015 and has been a regular face at the big tournaments on tour. She officiated the women’s final in 2018 Australian Open and had the honor of umpiring the 2019 Wimbledon women’s singles final. Last year, she umpired the Fed Cup final. “I never expected that I was going to be doing this for a living,” she said in an interview with the International Tennis Federation. “Tennis was always my passion, I had a great love for the sport. As I was playing tennis as a young kid, my dream was basically to go to Wimbledon, even as a spectator. So for me, being selected first of all for Wimbledon was something unusual and incredible. But just being an umpire wasn’t enough for Veljovic, who wanted to not only make
it as a woman but make it to the very top of the sport on her own merit. But she also said that she is happy to see tennis offering equal opportunities for women that previously weren’t available. “Whether you are a girl or a guy, if you do well and they think you’re good enough to do the biggest matches like a Davis Cup final or a Grand Slam, it feels amazing that our sport is allowing us that,” she said. “Are going to determine is she good enough really because it’s ‘only’ a female? Can she really do it? If we start thinking from that side, I don’t think it’s fair, and it’s okay, so yeah, I feel that tennis is giving us the right opportunities.” Clearly, with Veljovic taking charge of some of the biggest matches in the sport, she has risen to the very top of her profession, and she’s happy to be a female role model for other aspiring female officials. “It can be tough, you’re away from home, and things aren’t always going a good way,” she said. “But the experience overall, I think it’s a great experience, a great life experience. So yes, I would definitely recommend it.”

PGA TOUR, its tournaments surpass $3 billion in all-time charitable giving
By Desert Star Staff PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA - PGA TOUR player Gary Woodland surprised Amy Bockerstette from Special Olympics Arizona last January with the opportunity to play the 16th hole together as part of his Waste Management Phoenix Open practice round. With a smile on her face and her can-do, “I got this” selftalk, Amy – the first collegiate golfer to compete with an intellectual disability such as Down syndrome – became an overnight sensation. Her remarkable, par-saving putt has been viewed nearly 44 million times across TOUR platforms and has been featured on the NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News, the TODAY Show, and countless other platforms beyond golf.
One year later, the PGA TOUR celebrated the anniversary of that memorable event by announcing that the TOUR and its tournaments have surpassed $3 billion in all-time charitable giving. The charitable total, which includes a record of $204.3 million in 2019 to bring the all-time total to $3.05 billion, includes donations made by tournaments on the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions, Korn Ferry Tour, Mackenzie TourPGA TOUR Canada, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and PGA TOUR Series-China. “It’s truly a pleasure to thank our fans, sponsors, tournaments, players, and volunteers for helping us generate over $3 billion for charity and positively impact
millions of lives,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “As remarkable as this milestone is, what really matters are the countless stories like Amy’s that every tournament has. Together, we look forward to continuing to reach – and celebrate – millions more.” Woodland and Amy are two of those millions, and it’s been a whirlwind for both since the two first met at TPC Scottsdale. Woodland and his wife, Gabby, have welcomed twins; he celebrated the biggest win of his career at the U.S. Open, telling Amy he “used (her) positive energy” to do so; and Amy has become an ambassador for those with Down syndrome, launching her I GOT THIS FOUNDATION to promote golf instruction
and playing opportunities for people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. The two will reunite on Wednesday, January 29, at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the site of their now-famous interaction. The PGA TOUR and its more than 100 tournaments across all Tours achieved the $3 billion mark just six years after surpassing $2 billion in 2014. The TOUR reached the $1 billion mark in 2005. Also, the record $204.3 million in 2019 bests the previous record of $190 million in 2018. The TOUR’s first charitable donation of $10,000 was at the 1938 Palm Beach Invitational. These dollars positively impact more than 3,000 nonprofits each year, such as the First Tee, which
has introduced more than 15 million young people to its character-building programs through the game of golf. Each PGA TOUR tournament provides individuals an opportunity to give back to the community in one of three ways – attending an event, volunteering, or donating money. Not-forprofit tournaments under the PGA TOUR umbrella donate their net proceeds to support local organizations, totaling more than $3 billion in donations to date. The impact these tournaments make throughout the year is possible thanks to the more than 100,000 volunteers who commit their time to ensure each event is a success. Source: (GLOBE NEWSWIRE)

They held the event at the Richards Center for the Performing Arts. Donors, friends, and fans were lucky to attend a VIP reception where they could get their photo taken with the Actress. This is the third season of great speakers with the next speaker to be Bob Woodard to discuss his new book. The Palm Springs Speakers Series is a collaboration between the Friends of the Palm Springs Library and the Palm Springs Cultural Center. This series spotlights the written word, literacy, culture, the Arts and serves as a fundraiser for both. Fans and guests had some great stories to tell about their meeting with Dame Collins at some point in their lives. Two gentlemen brought a part of a piano the was actually owned by Joan Collins for her to see. Another brought a Dynasty doll in her image. A few met her years ago at some dinner, play, or event with friends. Two impersonators came to see Dame Collins and meet her, and she seemed happy to meet them too. There was a long line of fans waiting to talk to her or get their photo with her. The theatre was filled with Dame Joan Collins fans as moderator Chuck Yates asked her questions about her life. Collins said she started acting at age 7. Yates asked about her movies and her awards. He also asked her about her book and her philanthropy work. She answered all his questions with openness about her life and career and told some hilarious facts that had the audience laughing a lot. She has been in the public eye as the famous Alexis Carrington from Dynasty, who was always beautiful and slim. At one point before that, she was told she was fat and needed to lose weight. Hedda Hopper told her she was ugly without makeup, and her hair looked like it was styled with an egg beater. Hard to believe that anyone would say that to such a beautiful woman. She said she was approached by a talent scout at 17 who asked her if Joan wanted to be an actress, and she said no but later changed

her mind. She told about Bette Davis and said she was terrified, and she was scared of her. Collins told how she was offered the role of Cleopatra but would have to be excellent for the part which probably meant the so-called casting couch, which was prevalent at that time. She
met Marilyn Monroe and other great actresses and worked with many handsome male actors and even a few not so lovely. At age 49, she posed for Playboy and had a 12-page spread, and it was tastefully done. She spoke about her 15 books and her favorite
charities, many she started. She is currently working on a nonfiction book. This multitalented woman has won many awards and been nominated a lot of times. She has been in over 60 movies and hundreds of TV shows. She is a Diarist for several newspapers, done

Lawmakers Consider Restricting Medical Care for Transgender Youth
By Desert Star Staff PIERRE, S.D. -- A South Dakota bill that would punish doctors who provide treatments for transgender youths is similar to others making their way through state legislatures this year. House Bill 1057 would punish doctors who treat patients younger than age 16 for certain gendertransition procedures. If approved, the law would criminalize such medical treatment by imposing a one year jail sentence and a maximum fine of up to $2,000. At its first hearing last week, former South Dakota Attorney General Roger Tellinghuisen urged
lawmakers to reject the bill. “Transgender children tend to be some of the most vulnerable kids that we have in our society. They have a higher rate of suicidal thoughts,” Tellinghuisen said. “And this bill does nothing to help them in terms of their journey through life.” Tellinghuisen said he believes South Dakota’s Republican super-majority in the Legislature has prompted outside groups to use the state as a testing ground for conservative measures. Other states with pending legislation affecting transgendered youth include Kentucky, Georgia and Texas.
Gov. Kristi Noem expressed concern about the legislation last week, but wouldn’t say if she would sign it. Should it pass, the South Dakota ACLU has vowed to challenge the bill in the courts. South Dakota ACLU Policy Director Libby Skarin said transgender issues are for parents and their children, not the government, to decide. “What this bill would do instead is say that you as a parent aren’t qualified to make these decisions for your child, or we as the government don’t trust you to care for your child, so we are going to make these decisions for you,” Skarin said. She said legislation targeting
transgender individuals has been ongoing for years. In 2016, South Dakota’s Legislature passed a bill, later vetoed by the former governor, that would have limited transgender students’ bathroom access. Skarin said instead of focusing on those already marginalized, lawmakers should focus on problems faced by a majority of South Dakota residents.
“This bill is taking up a lot of the air in the state Legislature,” she said. “It’s sucking up so much of the public conversation that would be better spent talking about real problems that we have in the state.” During the four-hour hearing last week, representatives from the South Dakota State Medical Association and Sanford Health testified that the bill goes against “best practices.”
Legislation under consideration at the South Dakota Capitol would criminalize doctors for providing gender transition treatment to children younger than age 16 “when such procedures are done to cause the minor to feel or appear as the opposite sex.” (healthy women.org) www.desertstarweekly.com

Write More Letters to Friends and Family
By Desert Star Staff In an age of instant messages, video chats and social media, the art of letter writing has become rare. But sitting down to write correspondence by hand can be a much more personal way to connect than some of the modern modes of communication. Not only does it give you ample opportunity to express yourself, it gives your recipient something tangible to hold onto and revisit. International Correspondence Writing Month (InCoWriMo), celebrated in February, is the perfect opportunity to hone your letterwriting skills. This month-long challenge invites you to handwrite and mail or deliver one letter, card, note or postcard every day of the month. If it’s been some time since you last corresponded by snail mail, you may find your letterwriting skills to be a bit rusty. To help you be successful during InCoWriMo and beyond, the experts at Pilot Pen are offering some tips: 1. Make Lasting Connections. Writing and
mailing letters daily may feel a bit intimidating, but why should it? Did you text someone today? Did you send an email? If the answer is yes, you’re already halfway there. Put pen to paper instead and add a more personal, analog touch to your daily communication. Reconnect with long distance friends, send happy mail to your parents, or explore the opportunity to encourage a soldier overseas and make a new friend in the process. Whoever you choose to write to this process, it will help create a physical reminder of the connection between you and your recipient. 2. Pick Great Tools. A trusty pen can get you through any deadline, to-do list or thank you note. Wielding this powerful tool will automatically help you feel capable of taking on new challenges. During the month of February, Pilot Pen suggests picking up a pen designed to help you author your best correspondence, as well as overachieve in every aspect of your life. With G2, America’s number one selling, longest-lasting gel ink pen,
you’ll be able to glide through all 29 days of handwritten letters, and anything else that comes across your desk, for months to come. 3. Get Inspired. Not sure where to start? Think of each recipient and what makes them special to you. Share favorite memories or accomplishments that make you extra proud of them. Then, share one anecdote or piece of news from your life. In our increasingly digital lives, your
unique hand-written sentiments will likely bring a welcome bit of cheer into their day. 4. Get Personal. Remember: the written word is powerful, especially when it’s personal. Give each note a special touch by writing it on monogrammed stationery or a special postcard. You can take this personalization concept one step further by using different pens for each recipient. With four pen point sizes ranging from ultra-fine
to bold and more than 25 ink color options, including pastels, and metallics, there’s sure to be a G2 pen suited to your writing style and your recipient’s tastes. For tools and inspiration, visit powertothepen.com and instagram.com/pilotpenusa. By rediscovering the art of handwritten correspondence this February, you’ll give yourself 29 meaningful chances to connect with pen pals all over the globe. StatePoint
Questions Your Teen’s Pediatrician May Ask
By Desert Star Staff Routine check-ups are essential for adolescents and young adults. As health risks and concerns are rapidly changing during the teen years, these preventive services can help keep your teens healthy and safe. Experts say that conversations between doctors, patients and their families during these visits are very important. “Habits formed in adolescence often continue into adulthood, making this a key period for encouraging behaviors that promote health and reduce risk,” says Dr. Elizabeth Alderman, chair of American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Adolescence. “Routine check-ups are a great time to encourage adolescents to actively participate in their own

These tips were developed by the Adolescent Health Consortium, a collaboration among the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. • Your teen’s doctor may ask them questions like “What are your responsibilities at home?” and “What are you good at?” in an effort to gauge their emotional development, their ability to
cope with stress, and assess their risk for depression, anxiety, or other concerns. • You may be asked general questions about your home, neighborhood, and your teen’s school environments in order to help the doctor determine whether your child is eating enough, feels safe, and is getting enough sleep. This can offer an overall picture of your teen’s well-being. • Your teen’s doctor will likely ask your teen about their sexual activity, contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and pregnancy prevention, as well as about their use of tobacco, e-cigarettes, alcohol, and prescription and street drugs. When Money Is Not Enough; How To Grow Productive, Loyal Employees By Troy Nix When Delta Air Lines announced plans to pay out a record $1.6 billion in profit sharing to its 90,000 employees – the equivalent of about two months pay for each of them – workers across America likely turned envious. If only their employers would do the same. Of course, not all companies can afford such lavish bonuses, but there are other things CEOs can do to boost employee morale and, at the same time, reduce the odds that their best workers go looking elsewhere for employment, says Troy Nix (www.troynix. com), a motivational speaker, businessman and author of Eternal Impact: Inspire Greatness in Yourself and Others. “Money is just one thing that motivates employees, and it’s not always the primary motivator,” says Nix, founder and CEO of First Resource Inc., an association-management company specializing in manufacturing networks. “Other factors – many of them having to do with working conditions or managers – are more likely to influence whether someone stays with a company
or heads out the door.” A Randstad US study on why workers part ways with employers reported that some of the reasons most often cited include: They dislike their direct supervisors; they feel their companies view profits or revenue as more important than how people are treated; there aren’t enough growth opportunities for them; their companies fail to make the best use of their skills and abilities; the work culture is toxic; or their departments are understaffed. Nix points out that bonuses or pay raises, while desirable, wouldn’t solve any of those core problems that lead to employee turnover. “The secret to maintaining and growing a quality workforce lies in having a people-centric culture,” Nix says. “Certainly, there is no one silver bullet that will solve a company’s workforce dilemma, but there are ways businesses can create a worker-friendly atmosphere that will result in happier, more productive employees who want to stay with them.” He says some solutions that will keep employees satisfied and even enthusiastic about their work include: • Help them understand the “why” of what they do.“The
majority of employees usually know what they do, and most of them certainly understand how they do it,” Nix says. “But few understand why they do it. If you want to improve employee engagement, I encourage you to answer the question ‘why’ before you do anything else; and don’t just do it once, do it regularly. Habitually communicating to employees the reason your business exists will directly elevate the commitment of your people to the ‘why’ of your existence.” • Give them purpose. ”More than ever, people want to be part of something that has purpose and meaning,” Nix says. “For young people
especially, going to work needs to be about more than just making money. Leaders should be aware of these aspirations and build a company culture that enables employees to find purpose in what they do. Imagine the success a business could have if the employees looked forward to coming to work on Monday with as much joy as they look forward to their weekends.” • Provide support for increasing their knowledge and productivity. Great leaders understand that the majority of employees perform their job functions without coming close to their full capacity, Nix says. Yet, among the top reasons
employees leave is they see no room for career growth where they are, or they don’t feel their companies make the best use of their capabilities. “It’s essential for managers to find ways to tap into their employees’ skills,” he says, “because doing so is going to be good for the employee and good for the company.” “Winning the loyalty of your employees translates into individuals who are dedicated to making the company better,” Nix says. “They will take the extra step to ensure the needs of the customer are met, and they will literally think about the company on their off time because it is that important to them.”

Poll: Carmakers’ Support for Clean Car Rollbacks Alienates Customers
By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES -- A new poll suggests carmakers that support the Trump administration’s attempt to roll back clean-car emission standards may be undermining their standing with their customers. Toyota, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, Subaru, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi support the feds in a lawsuit to prevent California from establishing tougher emissions standards than those set by the federal government. Pollster Matt George said his firm questioned 1,000 Toyota owners and found the company’s reputation takes a big hit once people find out about the lawsuit. “In terms of the perception of Toyota being a ‘green and sustainable company that takes care to be environmentally friendly,’ at the outset of the poll, 90% of Toyota consumers would agree with that statement. At
the end of the poll, after they found out more information, 55% agree,” George said. “So, that’s a pretty significant drop.” Other car companies have taken a different approach. Volkswagen, Ford, BMW and Honda have agreed to adhere to California’s stronger standards, which have been adopted by 14 other states. Toyota did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Trump administration has said the lower standards will translate to lower sticker prices. However, Shannon Baker-Branstetter, manager of cars and energy policy for Consumer Reports, said the government’s own analysis shows the lower emissions standards would hurt fuel economy - and cost drivers an average of $1,400 more a year in gas. “The stronger fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission standards improve both consumer pocketbooks
California’s emission standards are the toughest in the nation for cutting emissions of carbon and other pollutants to combat climate change. (Olando/Adobe Stock) and reduce pollution, and so that really is a win-win,” BakerBranstetter said. “However, rolling back the rule will increase pollution, as well as cost consumers money.” Clean-air advocacy groups are hoping more public awareness will pressure the feds to withdraw the
lawsuit and allow California to keep its high standards. George said the poll showed only 15% of Americans are following the lawsuit closely - and that number is only slightly higher in California. “The number in California is only 20% - only 5% higher than the national average, for a
lawsuit that is going to directly impact emissions standards within that state,” George said. The poll also found 1 in 4 Toyota owners, particularly those ages 18-34, would consider switching brands after hearing about the company’s stance on clean-car standards.
Survey: At Least 5,000 Teens Report Being Sexually Exploited grade were asked whether they had traded sexual activity for goods or shelter. Roughly 1.4% said they had. University of Minnesota associate professor Lauren Martin helped with research on the project. She said the issue is not limited to any particular part of the state. “Young people across the state answered yes, that they have traded sex,” Martin said. “We’ve noted slightly higher rates in northern Minnesota, compared to the metro area.” Martin added the rate was very similar between boys and girls. And she acknowledged the overall number is probably higher because of teens who don’t attend school or because respondents were too embarrassed to answer ‘yes.’ Others who have researched the topic in Minnesota say the survey provides a good benchmark
to build on outreach services for victims. Julia Atella is a researcher with the Wilder Foundation, which has examined state efforts on the issue. She agreed that while the findings are critical, they really only scratch the surface. “But I think what you don’t know is why the exploitation, or how long it’s been happening,” Atella said; “some of those things that could give more information about what type of services are needed” Atella said Minnesota’s Safe Harbor program, which helps fund outreach services and provides legal protection for victims, has done great work in meeting the needs of sexually exploited youth. But she said there needs to be a greater focus on communities of color, and an expansion of prevention measures.

The Last Ship
Photos by Matthew Murphy. By Lisa Lyons The Last Ship portrays the end of an era in Great Britain when the shipbuilders of Wallsend ultimately went the way of the dinosaurs much like American coal miners in the late 20th century. When overseas shipbuilders could produce a competitive product for millions less with no messy unions to deal with. It eliminated a whole way of life for thousands of workers who struggled to reinvent themselves in an economy that no longer wanted them. Singer/composer/ musician Sting created a loving tribute to the town of his youth in England’s gritty Northern country. Entire generations of families lost everything... but they didn’t go quietly. The battles they fought to take over their shipyard and launch one last ship is the plot of this uneven musical that can’t quite decide to go port or starboard. At the show’s opening scene, young Gideon desperately wants to flee the poverty and narrowness of Wallsend and rebels against his father’s wishes to join the shipbuilders union.
Instead, he impulsively runs off to join the Navy, leaving behind his childhood love Meg whom he promises to return for in a short while. Seventeen years later, the disillusioned Meg is running a local pub and raising daughter Ellen as a single mum, when Gideon suddenly reappears, wanting to reclaim his lost love and discovers he has a daughter. This all happens amid news that the shipyard will be closing, and the last ship they are working on, the Utopia, will be torn down and sold for scrap. Sting plays Jackie White, the shipyard foreman, who is caught between management and his men. His wife, Peggy, is the shipyard nurse who stands loyally by her man as the builders and their families turn on Jackie in a rage of betrayal and disappointment. If it sounds like a lot is going on here, there is. And each element - plot, music, dialogue, movement - is fighting against each other, much like the characters in the show. The opening number is a rousing sea shanty of sorts, “We’ve Got
Nowt Else” sung full-throttle by the powerful chorus. It starts promising, but then subsequent numbers are alternately Sondheim-Esque character pieces, inspiring hymns, jazzy eleven o’clock showstoppers, or a plaintive reflection from Sting’s classic album “The Soul Cages.” In fact, three songs from that album are featured in THE LAST SHIP. This results in a dissonance that often throws the show off-balance. As far as the cast goes, there are some outstanding talents up there, giving it their all. The real find of this production is the glorious Frances McNamee, whose tremulous yet powerful voice brings Meg to full life. As her love Gideon, Oliver Savile has a beautiful presence and shows both the good and bad sides of this prodigal. Like Ellen, the feisty young woman who also longs to flee the shipyards like her father did to pursue a musical career, Sophie Reid has a strong voice but seems a bit too mature to be 16 years old. Other outstanding performers include Jackie Morrison as the no-nonsense wife of Jackie
White; Marc Akinfolarin as a philosophizing builder who brings a sweet quality to his scenes; and Annie Grace, channeling her best Margaret Thatcher person as a Baroness who represents the government in the shipyard brouhaha. But where you might be asking, is Sting, the star and musical creator of THE LAST SHIP in this review? I, he is the least compelling actor on that stage. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Sting, and when he is performing in concert, he is a magical, magnetic presence. But he’s not rough-edged and dynamic enough to portray Jackie. I have a feeling that he agreed to be the marquee name to boost sales for the show, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But his restrained and erudite way of speaking doesn’t really fit the workingclass Jackie. However, he has the most authentic accent on the stage. Many of the cast members are inconsistent, slipping between Scottish, Irish, and a weak attempt at the traditional Geordie accent of northern England. Definite praise must be

Tapick noted there was a great surprise in store for the guests when the Coachella Valley Youth Ensemble Program, CVYEP, would perform. Eight young musicians got in front of the guests adjusting their Music and instruments before playing several classical renditions. CVYEP teaches motivated students skills for a potential career in Music by implementing small ensemble traditional groups and is supported by grants, donations, and volunteer support. The Mission of the Symphonettes group is to invest in the Arts and our local children. By doing this, they are spending the health, music enrichment well being of all the Valley. Director Lorne Campbell met the challenge of bringing all the sound, movement, and performance elements into a cohesive presentation, which was no easy task. Other production team members include Sound Designer Sebastian Frost, Lighting Designer Matt Daw, Music Supervisor, and Orchestrator Rob Mathes, Musical Director Richard John, Costume Designer Molly Einchcomb, and Movement Director Lucy Hind. While it may not be the grand musical the creators envisioned, it is nonetheless a unique look at a way of life that is no more. Valentine’s day when everyone enjoys each other and the Arts. The children are exposed to Symphonic Music with a full Orchestra in the beautiful McCallum Theatre. A theatre full of smiling children and their teachers brings joy to the many donors and benefactors that contribute to the Children’s Discovery Programs. Maestro Gary Berkson held two concerts that gave children lessons in Music about the diversity of composers, both American and Foreign. Berkson also brought different musical instruments from foreign countries to expose their particular kind of Music. This effort shows the children that Music has no boundaries to get in the way of their dreams and aspirations for their future. These concerts brought out young teenage conductors to show the children that this might be one of them someday, and it is all possible.
