Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Guest Elisabeth Smart
Robert and Hillary Marx, Elizabeth Smart and John Thoreson. Photo by Pat Krause. Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Champions luncheons special guest was Elizabeth Smart. Smart was kidnapped from her bedroom when she was just 14. She was rescued nine months later after enduring horrific treatment. Hundreds came to listen to her story and how she survived and became an advocate for other rape victims. She is now married with three children and works tirelessly as a mother, wife and advocate to help others. She was chained, terrorized, raped during her ordeal at the hands of her captors, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. They were both
put in prison. Elisabeth’s story does not end there, she took the stage and was interviewed by the well-known TV personality Natalie Morales. They sat on stage in chairs opposite of each other where all the guests could see and hear them. They were on large TVs also. Natalie asked her what she went thru during her capture and how she felt. She said she knew she had a love of her parents and that would never end regardless of what was happening. That love kept her safe in her mind. She had to deal with the time she was rescued and saw her parents, and she was so grateful and comforted by their support

and all the prayers on her behalf. Her Dad made her feel it would never happen again and her mother was the most beautiful person. She makes sure her children know that whatever happens, she will always be there for them. She said this kidnapping was just one small part of her life and it was important how she lived the rest of it. Smart knew she could never go back to the girl she once was but had to find a way to move forward. She discovered music helped a lot as she never had therapy. That fall she went back to school and tried to fit in. She has heard many stories about rape
victims. She is concerned that a lot of people don’t know what rape is. A boyfriend or relative and does not report it as rape. She is also aware that victims are afraid to tell because they think no one will believe them which is sometimes the case. Smart mentioned the ME TOO movement and felt it should also include men as 1 in 6 boys are abused. Men think this doesn’t happen to boys. She feels early education can help teach children what is or what is not OK. She was wary of men and strangers for awhile but knows now she can make her own decisions on who to let into her life. She told how she met her husband. She said she
was amazed by the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center and all they do. Their dedication to abused children is inspiring. All monies raised go to the Barbara Children’s center, and no child has ever turned away because of an inability to pay for services. They are proud of the Aunts and Uncles program that support the programs. They address the physically, sexually and emotionally abuse of children and work to break the cycle of generational abuse. Smart said that because of horrible things that can and do happen to you doesn’t mean it has to define who you are for the rest of your life. Smarts story is an inspiration to everyone.

has concluded his speech. This event has been going on for years and is one of the premier events in the Desert. Chris Christie can be a very funny man outside of being very outspoken. He says what he believes to be true even if it doesn’t follow party lines. He started his speech by telling how he first met President Trump years ago. He said Donald Trump called his office and asked him to have dinner with him. He met him at the posh restaurant, and he was seated at this huge table in the middle of the room. Just him at a table for 10. He said then Donald Trump ordered for him telling him he would love the meal. Donald Trump ordered Scallops which Christie is

Donald Trump held the conversation the whole time. When he noticed he was not eating, the President asked what was wrong, and Chris said he hated lamb and then Trump asked him why he did not speak up. Laughter was loud after that story. He told many stories about Trump and said they are good friends to this day. Even after the Presidential debates. He said that Trump has not changed since that first meeting. He said he will always speak his mind. He said there are too many Pre-programmed politicians. He said they thought that someone needed a lot of Governmental experience to be January 30, 2019
President, but we found that was wrong. More Laughter. He said that he thought no one ever really knew the real President Obama as he was always so buttoned up. He told Big EGOs are a problem today and hard to deal with him. We need the Wall, and we need to pay for it. President Trump is pushing them, and that is what this country needs. The world looks to America for answers, and we need to be challenged. He said that he wants his children to know all the sacrifices that were made to keep this country safe. He said it was a gift to be born in this country and we should not put our heads in the sand but keep working to make our children proud of what has been accomplished. Christie spoke about today
and the climate in politics. He said its a different way of working. Christie mentioned that he does not agree with some of the things President Trump has said or is doing. He feels that President Trump should get better advisors that are helping him make some wrong statements and decisions. Christie said he deserves better because he is indeed a brilliant man and genuinely wants to make America great. He still supports the President and considers him a good friend and they talk a lot about the issues facing the country. He also said that President Trump is what this country needs. Christie said he loves this country and is not done with politics and trying to make this country what it can be. www.desertstarweekly.com
Time to consider Being Safe with your Investments
By Janice Gough The stock market is sending a signal that changes are in the near future. It is time to review your investments and reduce risk. Many market analysts are predicting a correction within the coming year. No one can time the market, but current indicators are sending Red Flags. The fact that “decision making” is largely based on emotion, many people get caught up in the “hype” of emotions and ignore what the market is forecasting. For example, regarding housing markets, people decide how much a house is worth by

guessing how much people will want to live in the area in the future. If buyers expect local values to increase, it makes sense to pay more for your house, since the influx of other buyers will then drive up prices. If people start believing, even for a short time, that recent trends are the new normal, they will begin paying higher rates, which locks the trend in place and lends credence to their belief. Eventually, things spiral out of control before they come to their senses. It does not take much human error to create false expectations about any investment, which can lead to a bubble in the entire market. Some economists have shown that even if just a fraction of investors think this way, it can cause repeated bubbles. But despite decades of research, finance academics have been unable to agree on a cause for this phenomenon. Do investors suddenly become optimistic about asset fundamentals, only to realize a couple of years later that it was all a mirage? Do they buy at prices they know are inflated, hoping to find a greater fool to sell to, before the crash? Or do they follow the lead of others? How do you know whether demand will increase? One obvious way is to look at recent trends. If prices have been going up, it’s a signal that the area is hot. About 50
percent of homebuyers say that they use recent price trends to determine how much a home is worth. Investors rely on past prices to make guesses about demand but fail to realize that other buyers are doing the same thing. When everyone is making assumptions based on other people’s opinions about price trends, the whole thing can become a house of cards. Economists show how if homebuyers think this way, the result, predictably, is repeated causing bubbles and crashes. So, a small but increasing number of papers are asking how markets would behave if investors improperly extrapolate recent trends into the future. Investors make mistakes when projecting future asset returns. If stocks have had an outstanding run for the past five years, or if earnings growth seems to have shifted to a faster trend, people might decide that this is the new normal, and pay prices that later turn out to be ludicrous. When investing, there are so many factors to know and understand, not only about your investment but also about all the otherworldly economics that can impact it towards a positive outcome. This question is the great white whale of finance theory. We know that asset prices are given to dramatic rises and falls over short periods.
Answering this question is hugely important, not just for people’s pensions and retirement, but for the whole economy, since crashes in asset prices can leave growth in the doldrums for years. To determine when to buy, when to hold or when to fold has long been a problem for most. Warren Buffet’s, who has made much of his money in down markets has stated, “I will not tell you how to become rich.
Fair or Unfair Housing? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Kelly, I recently read your earlier article on Fair Housing laws being violated by HOAs trying to enforce state-mandated signs that prohibit children from using HOA pool and spa. We have a large sign at the spa in our community pool section stating that “Children under 14 are prohibited from using the spa.” It’s just a flat out ban of children under 14, with or without a guardian. My 13-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son were devastated when a security guard told them they’d have to get out because of the sign. There was no one else in the pool or spa section other than us and our children. He said he feared losing his job if he didn’t try to enforce this. Is this a violation of the Fair Housing laws? If so, can you provide a link or legal reference to this? Thank you, E.A., Menifee
of pools by children under the age of 14. At the same time, the Fair Housing laws ban discrimination against children, and do not contain an exception for safety. There have been several reported federal court cases in California in which housing providers have been sued because they tried to enforce the policy stated in the sign. The state Department of Public Health was considering amendments to its regulations to resolve this conflict in the law, but so far no changes have been announced on its web site. There are other instances in which safety concerns clash with Fair Housing laws, such as clubhouse or gym equipment usage. However, at this point, there is no apparent safe harbor or excuse for discrimination based upon legitimate safety concerns, and the forthcoming state Fair Housing Regulations will not permit safety concerns to justify familial status discrimination. The prohibition against discrimination based upon familial status (and Dear E.A.: other protected classes) HOAs are currently required is found at Government by Title 24 California Code of Code Section 12955(a). Could we limit children’s use of the pool to between 2 & 5 or is this discrimination? Can we only allow residents to use facilities, with no guests allowed? F.P., Goleta Dear F.P.: Your age-restricted community association may discriminate based upon familial status (families with children under the age of 18), pursuant to Government Code Section 12955.9. So, yes, your association, if it qualifies as “housing for older persons” under that statute, may ban children from the pool or have special “kids allowed” hours. CA Mayors Promote Innovative Solutions to Housing Crunch
trying to buy up low-income buildings as they come on the market, often subsidizing rents so the families don’t get evicted. The city is also trying to streamline procedures to speed up new construction. “The goal is to cut back on how long it takes to build housing in the first place,” says Breed. “In San Francisco it’s, like, years.” Several mayors said the government shutdown will exacerbate the problem if it goes on much longer, as landlord who aren’t getting their federal subsidies could start demanding higher rents from low-income tenants. Meanwhile, multiple nonprofits are seeking funds to facilitate loans for lowincome residents to establish co-ops, which would allow them to buy and manage affordable housing communities.
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – On any given night 134,000 people in California are homeless, and millions more are at risk of
losing the roof over their heads. So, several California mayors looking for innovative solutions joined a national roundtable discussion in DC on Thursday.
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf highlighted a new program funded by Kaiser and the San Francisco Foundation called “Keep Oakland Housed.”
It makes one-time grants to struggling families so they don’t end up on the street. “Think about what it costs government if those people had become homeless,” says Schaaf. “This is one of the most cost-effective interventions that I believe we can invest in.” In the first six months, she says the program has kept 500 families from being displaced, at an average cost of $2,500 each. A bill to fund a state-level version of the rental assistance program now awaits a committee hearing in the state Senate. Many cities are also looking to change zoning laws to allow more people to build so-called “granny flats” – or small rental units in their backyards – and to allow taller apartment buildings near public transportation. San Francisco Mayor London Breed says the city is
By Desert Star Staff AUGUSTA, Maine — A new bill in Maine is aimed at creating an ambitious student-loan forgiveness program. If someone lives and works in Maine for five years, the state could relieve all their student debt. State Senate Majority Leader Nate Libby recently co-filed Maine Senate Bill 149, which calls for a bond to fund the new program. “The concept that I’ve come up with is having our state create a first-in-the-nation student-debt forgiveness benefit to help attract and retain young workers,” Libby said. He says the program addresses the workforce
shortage and the aging population in Maine. He originally introduced the same bill in the last legislative session, where it died on the Senate floor in September. While former Gov. Paul LePage supported the legislation, the Legislature didn’t put the bond on the November ballot. Libby explained why he is pushing for a $250 million bond rather than a tax credit. “With a program like this, we have limits, so I suggested $250 million,” he said. “It’s not like setting up this program would open a floodgate where the state would have to pay off more than $250 million, if that’s what the voters support. So, in that sense it’s capped.”
There is no limit, however, on the number of people who can claim a tax credit. Maine currently offers several student-loan tax breaks, allowing taxpayers to offset their tax burden by the amount paid to student loans. But Libby said these tax credits are difficult to access. “The problem that I see is that the tax credit’s far too complicated for most lay people to figure out how to file for,” he said. “It’s an enormous amount of paperwork and calculations.” A public hearing for the bill has not yet been scheduled, but it is expected to take place some time in February.

Supreme Court Decision Allows Transgender Military Ban
Estimates of the number of transgender personnel in the U.S. military range from a few thousand to 15,500. (pxhere) By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK - The U.S. Supreme Court has lifted

injunctions preventing the Trump administration from implementing its ban on
transgender personnel serving in the military. The high court denied a Justice Department petition asking for an immediate hearing of district-court rulings that still are being argued in the appeals court. However, in a 5-4 decision, the court temporarily stayed trial courts’ decisions that blocked the policy from taking effect while still in litigation. Transgender people have served openly since June 2016, said Peter Renn, an attorney with Lambda Legal, adding that military leaders testified in Congress last year that the transition to open service has gone smoothly. “The ban is a slap in the face to the brave transgender men and women who put themselves on the line for the rest of us,” Renn said, “and it wrongly suggests that their contributions to our country January 30, 2019
are somehow less than those of everyone else.” Estimates of the number of transgender people now serving vary from a few thousand to as many as 15,000. Renn said lawsuits challenging the policy on constitutional grounds will continue. President Donald Trump cited “tremendous medical costs and disruption” as justifications for the ban. Sarah McBride, national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, said she believes the ban is part of a wider Trump administration agenda to license discrimination and embolden prejudice against LGBTQ people. “They have sought to license discrimination in our schools and workplaces, in health care and in shelters,” she said, “and in this case, they are seeking to mandate discrimination in our military,
the nation’s largest employer.” The court’s decision doesn’t affect a separate injunction against the ban imposed by a court in Maryland, but advocates say that also could be lifted in light of the decision. On Jan. 4, a U.S. Court of Appeals overturned a similar injunction by a Washington, D.C., trial judge. This week’s Supreme Court decision applies to court injunctions imposed in California and Washington state. However, Renn said the issue is far from settled. “Whether the ban is unconstitutional is being litigated right now in the lower courts,” he said, “and the vast majority of courts that have ruled on the ban have seen it for what it is, which is rank discrimination.” More information is online at lambdalegal.org. www.desertstarweekly.com
Legends In Concert Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Cher, and Neil Diamond
By Desert Star Staff The Tuesday, February 19, the performance of “Legends in Concert” at 8:00 pm is presented through the generosity of Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The Wednesday, February 20, performance at 8:00 pm is performed through the generosity of Jerry and Sarah Matthews. “Legends in Concert” is the longest-running show in Las Vegas history, and after 35 years, is still voted #1 tribute show in the city. The internationally acclaimed and award-winning production is known as the pioneer of live tribute shows and possesses the greatest collection of live tribute artists in the world. These incredible artists have pitch-perfect live vocals, signature choreography, and stunningly similar appearances to the legends they portray. “Legends in Concert” is known for elaborate theatrical sets, magnificent costumes and a full array of special effects. An outstanding cast of accomplished tribute artists, the talented ensemble of singers and dancers, and a live five-piece band comprised of some of the industry’s top musicians, bring the musical experience to life. Karen Hester (Dolly Parton) has a magnificent stage presence. On her way to becoming one of Legends’ best Dolly tribute
artists, she has impressed crowds country-wide, time and time again. Coming from a family of musical people where everyone either played an instrument or sang, the stage is close to her heart. She started singing at family reunions, in gospel quartets and trios and ventured into theatrical productions and country music. Drawing inspiration from Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Martina McBride, and Dolly Parton, as Karen grew, so did her passion for music and performance. She’s performed in regional and national commercials, acted in the Murder Mystery Dinner Theater shows at the House of Blues, was featured in “The Dean Martin Show” at the Palace Theatre, and performed as an impersonator for “Dino’s TV Variety Show.” She was in the off-Broadway hit The Marvelous Wonderettes and was the understudy for both female roles in Golf: The Musical. She has also been the opening act for recording artists such as Trace Adkins and Ricky Van Shelton. Harnessing her professional experience, and topping it off with outstanding costumes, wigs, and makeup, Karen brings her Dolly Parton act to life for “Legends in Concert.” Hear her sing Dolly’s best, and prepare to be impressed. Dave Karl (Kenny Rogers)
was born in Illinois and started as a kid doing cartoon character voices for family and friends, an early discovery of impersonating! Mel Blanc, the voice behind the Warner Bros.® cartoon characters, was his mentor. At age eight, Dave learned guitar and also took an interest in singing, impersonating the styles of Elvis, the Beatles, and other rock-n-roll artists. He wrote music with fellow musicians, going into recording studios to cut 45 rpm records to sell to their followers, trying to make it into the music industry. At 18, he turned to country music, impersonating stars like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Kenny Rogers and even actors such as Walter Brennan who released a song in 1962. In the mid-1970s, Dave learned bass guitar and piano. From 1986 to 1993, Dave played keyboard and guitar in a Chicago country group Heartland, opening for Marie Osmond, Lee Greenwood, Ronnie Milsap, and others. After the band split, he focused on a solo act and continued to impersonate in local clubs. In 2008, Dave put together a tribute act to Kenny Rogers called “A Touch of Kenny.” His ability to impersonate Kenny comes easily for him because even his speaking voice is dead on to Kenny’s voice.
Lisa McClowry (Cher) or “LMac,” is the very excitement and essence of Cher in “Legends in Concert.” Lisa’s strong artistic background in music, theater, and stage makeup comes to life as she pays tribute to the original “Queen of Pop” Cher in a dominant, authentic performance. LMac is a lifelong singer and entertainer with more than 30 years in the entertainment industry as a trusted, reliable, and talented professional. Her peers continually describe Lmac as a visionary, a trailblazer, creative, and businessminded all-in-one, and an exemplary leader and a team player. In 2016, LMac made an official shift in her music career from recording artist, supporting her original music CD releases, touring and live performances, to currently performing live theme-based shows and concerts. Jay White (Neil Diamond) has an incredible likeness to Neil Diamond, and his movements, sounds, and expressions are a powerful tribute to the vocal superstar. A native of Canada, Jay, moved to Detroit with his family, where he subsidized his education at Wayne University by selling insurance and doing local singing gigs. He loved the Neil Diamond music, including it in his act. When Neil Diamond fans convinced
him that he sounded like the real thing, he studied the look and the movements more closely. He joined “Legends” in 1988 and began working at John Ascuaga’s Nugget and Caesars, Tahoe, and soon was ready for his Las Vegas debut at the Imperial Palace, thrilling older Neil Diamond fans and winning new ones. Since then, he has appeared on “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Vicki Show,” and two National Arthritis telethons plus casinos nationwide. In Vegas, Jay gives Neil Diamond the honor he deserves at every “Legend in Concert” performance. The fans certainly respond. He’s even picked up a few fans for Neil Diamond along the way. “I’ve had people come up to me and say ‘I was never a Neil Diamond fan before, but after watching you, I’m going to buy one of his albums tomorrow.’” What more could this tribute artist do for a true legend? Tickets for this performance are priced at $88, $68, $58 and $38. Tickets are available at the Theatre’s website at www. mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the McCallum Theatre Box Office at (760) 3402787. Jason Mincer, Wyoming government relations director for the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, says sticker shock at the counter is a big motivation for people to quit smoking. “That would prevent about 2,100 kids from starting to smoke in Wyoming,” he states. “It’s going to save us over the long run almost $100 million in health care costs. And it would save about 1,300 lives.” Mincer says each year, 800 Wyoming residents die
from tobacco-related illness, and some 1,800 children try cigarettes for the first time. Critics of the measure maintain it would hurt small businesses, including convenience store owners, and warn the move could push Wyoming dollars to neighboring states that have lower taxes. House Bill 218, sponsored by Rep. Dan Zwonitzer (R-Cheyenne), is expected to get a hearing this week in the House Revenue Committee. Mincer says the tobacco tax would have a net-positive impact on the state budget, and notes Wyoming taxpayers are currently on the hook for $258 million annually for health care costs related to smoking. “So, a $1 increase in tobacco taxes would certainly benefit the State of Wyoming, with $22 million going to the General Fund and about $4 million to cities, towns and counties, who are
care increasingly depends on where she lives. “You have those states that are making sure that people are able to access affordable birth control, and access abortion care, make sure they’re getting
comprehensive sex education - and states that are doing the exact opposite,” Wetter said. Wetter said the state’s failing grade was due in part to laws that impose what she believes are undue regulations on abortion providers, and she noted that 41 percent of women in Nebraska live in a county without a provider. Defenders of the state’s socalled TRAP laws, which require infrastructure upgrades at abortion facilities, claim they are necessary to protect the health of unborn children and women. Wetter argued that requiring abortion facilities to be on par with an ambulatory surgical center, for example, might sound like a good idea. But, she said, those sorts of upgrades are not necessary for a medical procedure widely considered to be one of the safest in modern medicine. “But when you dig into the details of what’s required, you see that it is just requiring
the abortion providers to do millions of dollars in unnecessary upgrades with the intention of putting them out of business,” she said. Nebraska’s low score also reflects the fact that it does not mandate sex education in public schools. Wetter said many young people are not getting the information they need to make healthy decisions. “They may not be learning about birth control, or they’re just learning abstinence only,” Wetter said. “So that puts a lot of stigma on things like birth control and condoms, putting them at further risk for sexually transmitted diseases.” She said there is good news. Since Nebraska passed Medicaid expansion, its affordable access score should improve in next year’s report. She added that in Nebraska and across the nation, the teenpregnancy rate and unintendedpregnancy rate are at historic lows, and are continuing to fall.

A $1-per-pack cigarette tax increase is projected to generate over $20 million in new state revenue and save Wyoming nearly $100 million in health-care costs. sharp decrease in cigarettes sold, which translates into fewer children starting to smoke and lower rates of preventable disease.
He adds any tax less than $1 per-pack opens the door for tobacco companies to keep prices low through coupons and discounts.
Report: Trump Administration Sets New Records for Court Losses By Desert Star Staff HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trump administration’s efforts to weaken public health and environmental regulations are being roundly defeated in the courts, according to a new report. coast waters to offshore drilling to delaying the ban of a deadly pesticide. David Baron, managing attorney in the Earthjustice Washington, D.C., office, says of the 17 lawsuits that have resulted in major court decisions so far, the administration has won only one. “They’re just taking a ‘slash and burn’ approach to dismantling these legal protections,” says Baron, “without analysis, without facts and without legal support.
And that’s why we have courts, to hold government officials accountable when they act irresponsibly and illegally, and that’s what’s been happening here.” The Trump administration has claimed in many of the cases that environmental regulations hinder economic development. Among the challenges ahead is Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler’s proposal to weaken the Mercury and Air Toxics Standard. Baron January 30, 2019
notes that the EPA itself estimates the rule would save 11,000 lives every year. “Now these guys have come in and they’re trying, through the back door, to dismantle those protections,” says Baron. “It makes no sense, it’s not lawful and we’re going to fight it all the way.” Mercury, emitted by coalfired power plants, travels far from the original source and is absorbed by fish that are eaten by consumers. Baron predicts the administration’s losing streak
will continue, because it’s basing policy on ideology, and often ignoring the science that shows that regulations are needed and are working. “They’re trying to blind themselves from the very facts they need to make the decisions to protect ourselves and future generations,” says Baron. “And the courts are going to see that, and they’re not going to let it go forward.” The report is online at Earthjustice.org.

NM Legislature Considers ‘Roxy’s Law’ to Ban Wildlife Traps By Desert Star Staff SANTA FE, N.M. - A dog killed by a trap near Santa Cruz Lake is driving legislation expected to be introduced in the New Mexico Legislature this week to ban trapping on public lands. The 8-year-old dog named Roxy was on a hike with her owner last November when she was caught in an unmarked neck-snare trap and died before the trap could be removed. Mary Katherine Ray, wildlife chair for the Sierra Club’s Rio Grande Chapter and a member of the TrapFree New Mexico coalition, said “Roxy’s Law” is needed because there are millions of acres of public land where snares and other dangerous traps may be set legally. “This could happen to anyone,” she said, “and the fact that we allow killing devices on our public lands where other people can legally and rightfully recreate with their companion animals, and in some cases working animals, just is so utterly senseless.” Traps legally can be set if they’re 25 yards away from a road maintained annually with public funds, or from a trail marked on an agency
map. Sponsors of the bill have said it would outlaw commercial trapping on public land, but not affect trapping for scientific purposes. A similar bill to ban trapping on public lands was introduced in the 2017 session, but ranchers and trappers convinced lawmakers the practice was part of the state’s heritage and said it’s necessary to control wild carnivores. However, Ray argued that the economic benefit from tourists to the state also should be considered. “When we invite people to New Mexico to enjoy our outdoor spaces, I mean, that’s part of our heritage too. The tourism industry is huge here,” she said. “To inflict these devices on them is just appalling, especially when our neighboring states of Arizona and Colorado don’t do that.” Ray said New Mexico has no penalties for trappers who unintentionally trap non-target wildlife, including endangered species, protected species, domestic animals or even humans. The bill will be introduced by Reps. Bobby Gonzales, D-Taos, and Matthew McQueen, D-Santa Fe.

Trump-bashing Iraq war architect Elliott Abrams to lead US regime By Desert Star Staff Washington seems so dead-set on regime change in Venezuela, the State Department has just appointed a former diplomat with a sordid track record in Latin America and Middle East to spearhead “restoring democracy” in Caracas. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Friday the appointment of Elliott Abrams to “help the Venezuelan people fully restore democracy and prosperity to their country.” Abrams is expected to coordinate all diplomatic efforts to replace President Nicolas Maduro with the selfproclaimed president Juan Guaido, recognized by the US, OAS and several EU members. I left this building 30 years ago this week – last time I worked here – so it’s very nice to be back,” Abrams told reporters at the State Department on Friday. “This crisis in Venezuela is deep and difficult and dangerous and I can’t wait to get to work on it.” The appointment is an

attempt by the US to introduce a direct control of Venezuela as a “future regional vassal,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. Democracy was ‘restored’ in Iraq. In Libya, too. In Syria they tried but failed, or rather weren’t allowed to. And now in Venezuela Many US journalists and observers – even those supportive of regime change in Venezuela such as MSNBC’s Chris Hayes – were appalled by the news as well, recalling the former diplomat’s dark history in Latin America. As the Reagan administration’s assistant secretary of state for human rights in the 1980s, Abrams supported the US-backed dictators in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras in their campaigns of repression, including death squads. He was also involved in working with Iran to arming the USbacked rebels in Nicaragua, the infamous Iran-Contra scandal. Abrams was eventually convicted of lying to Congress
about Iran-Contra but was pardoned right away by President George H.W. Bush. In the 1990s, Abrams became a founding member of the Project for a New American Century, a hawkish neoconservative think-tank. He returned to the corridors of power in 2001, as a director on the National Security Council for President George W. Bush. He played a key role in the 2002 attempted coup in Venezuela against President Hugo Chavez and was one of the architects of the 2003 Iraq war. In February 2017, thenSecretary of State Rex Tillerson and Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner wanted to bring Abrams back to the State Department as deputy secretary, but Trump reportedly vetoed the proposal after reading what Abrams wrote about him during the 2016 presidential campaign, as part of the NeverTrump conservative camp. Also, on Friday, the US Treasury Department announced it would not be freezing all Venezuelan government January 30, 2019
assets, but instead ensure that “commercial transactions by the Venezuelan government, including those involving its state-owned enterprises and international reserves, are consistent” with Washington’s recognition of Guaido as the legitimate president. Between the recognition, the Treasury announcement,
and the appointment of Abrams, it seems that President Donald Trump has entirely abandoned his campaign plank of opposing regime change and nationbuilding interventions, embracing instead the neoconservative line championed then – and this week as well – by his rival Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida). www.desertstarweekly.com

‘First Man’ Chronicles First Moon Landing in 1969 In 1969 astronaut Neil Armstong became the first man to set foot on the moon. He described the experience as “one small step for man” and “a giant leap for mankind.” The film “First Man,” now available on DVD, chronicles this amazing accomplishment and the training and sacrifice that made it possible. “First Man,” starring Ryan Gosling in the title role, was directed by Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”) and is based on James R. Hansen’s 2005 biography. The screenplay by Josh Singer (“Spotlight,” “The Post”) gives us an insight into Armstong’s personal life as well as his training with NASA which eventually led to his triumphal landing on the moon. It also sheds light on a personal tragedy, the loss of his baby daughter Karen who died of cancer at the age of two. After her death, he moves to Houston with his wife Janet (Claire Foy) and their two sons. In Houston, he enters
an astronaut training program for NASA’s new Gemini space program. His colleagues in the program include Gus Grisson (Shea Whigham), Roger Chaffee (Cory Michael Smith), Jim Lovell (Pablo Schreiber), Dave Scott (Christopher Abbott) and eventually his Apollo 11 partner Buzz Aldrin (Corey Stoll). The Gemini space program was not without difficulty and public protest. During an early test, the capsule caught fire and exploded in flames on the launching pad, killing all three test pilots on board. At the same time, the American public was more preoccupied with the Cold War tensions between the U.S. and Russia than they were with the possibility of landing a man on the moon. There were also protests from the Civil Rights Movement exemplified by a reading of Gil Scott-Heron’s protest poem “Whitey on the Moon.” On the plus side, we hear a brief portion from
President Kennedy’s 1961 speech “We Chose to Go to the Moon” that lets you know that this monumental project will continue. “First Man,” while not nominated in the Best Picture category, did receive several Oscar nods for technical excellence (Visual Elects, Sound Editing and Production Design) and from the start, to finish, the movie takes us
back in time to a momentous achievement in world history. If you are a history buff “The First Man” is worth seeing. “First Man,” from Universal, is rated PG-13 for some thematic content involving peril and brief strong language. Running time is 2 hours and 21 minutes. “First Man” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD with added extra features.
In “Shooting for the Moon” you will hear commentary from the stars of the film, the director Chazellie and screenwriter Josh Singer. You will also get the chance to see one of Armstong’s sons.

J.B. Priestley’s Mystery Thriller - “An Inspector Calls”
When J.P. Priestley’s multi-award-winning chestnut “An Inspector Calls” makes its way across the pond, one cannot restrain one’s excitement at anticipating director Stephen Daldry’s restaging of The National Theatre of Great Britain’s 1992 production. Assembling a top-notch British cast, whose excellent work is enhanced by the technical components, the production delivers an overall exciting theatrical experience. The creative team consists of Ian MacNeil’s set and luscious costume design, Rick Fisher’s moody lighting, Stephen Warbeck’s music, and Sebastian Frost’s sound design. Before the action begins, the curtain is down and a young boy fiddles with it. There might be some symbolism as in “the child may lead them,” but honestly his role was unclear. The curtain is finally raised, and we catch a glimpse of a fairytale house perched high above the stage and enshrouded in thick fog. We hear the muffled conversation of people clearly from the upper class of society who are enjoying what sounds like a celebration in their “posh” dining room. I couldn’t help thinking of two old saws: “It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents - except at occasional interval.” First conjured up by the English Victorian novelist, playwright, and politician Sir Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton, the line became synonymous with the Melodramatic Victorian style of theatre. When the interior of the home is finally revealed, the second old saw that sprung to mind was, “There was once a woman who lived in a shoe with so many children she didn’t know what to do.” Why you may ask, would I think of that? The reason is five formally attired adult members of this aristocratic family are crammed into a space so tiny, that to deliver their lines, the actors had to crawl through a window or climb over a small balcony fence. Below is the large, basically unused stage. Yes. I get the symbolism. Although crammed into this tiny space, they are still above the masses. This is a special night in the year 1912. The Birling family consists of Arthur Birling, (Jeff Harmer) a wealthy industrialist and former Lord Mayor and his upper-class wife, Sybil (Christine Kavanagh) and their troubled son Eric (Hamish Riddle). They have gathered to celebrate the engagement of Arthur and Sybil’s daughter Sheila (Lianne Harvey) to Gerald Croft (Andrew Macklin) a successful businessman

who dad hopes will take good care of his daughter financially as well as enhancing their business dealings. Rounding out this wonderful cast is the devoted housekeeper Edna (Diana Payne-Myers) who is fiercely dedicated to the needs of the family and unwittingly or maybe wittingly provides comic relief given some of the amusing stage business assigned to her by the director. The celebratory ambiance begins to slowly change as a man in a raincoat suddenly arrives claiming to be the Inspector General (Liam Brennan) who has come to interview the family about the recent suicide death of a young woman named Eva Smith. At first, dad denies knowing her at all, until the inspector points out that she worked in his factory but was fired because of leading a strike for higher wages. Arthur begins to slowly recollect who she is and insists that he bears no responsibility for her death. The Inspector shows her photo and reads excerpts from Eva’s diary to the newly engaged Sheila who finally confesses that she was shopping in a store where Eva was employed and didn’t like her attitude, so she had her fired. So now it’s mummy’s turn, and after some prodding, she recollects that the pregnant Eva sought help from the charity which she chaired but advised the committee to turn her down. Sheila’s fiancée also had an encounter with her, and finally, we find out that she was carrying Eric’s baby. One by one, members of this refined family confess their relationship to the dead woman and have to reach into their collective conscience to acknowledge their share of the blame for this tragedy. The family is devastated by all the revelations and after being told that the body is in the morgue, the Inspector, who interviewed with the accuracy of a sharp surgical knife, finally takes his leave. Dad decides to check on the Inspector’s story and calls the police to see if such a body has shown up. Good news. No such body exists – at least at that particular moment, but wait, the family is in for yet another shocking revelation. If they weren’t such worms, you would almost feel sorry for them. Priestly is an excellent storyteller and like a good Agatha Christie mystery, slowly peels away the layers of lies and deceptions practiced by this family devoid of a deep moral structure. The superb cast, under Daldry’s crack direction, keeps you on the edge of your seat as the truth is slowly unraveled. As you watch the action unfold,
L-R: A dramatic moment between Sheila (Lianne Harvey,) and her mother Sybil Birling (Christine Kavanagh,) as her husband Arthur (Jeff Harmer) looks on. I would venture a guess that they are somewhat like a Greek chorus observing the behavior unfolding before them and serving as a reminder that life at the top is not reflected by life at the “bottom.” Perhaps the playwright intended to illuminate the sometimes cold, callous, despicable behavior foisted on the lower classes. birdwatching neighbor whose nearby residence and towering trees serve as a winter roosting site for three regal egrets she refers to as her “winter guests.” Frank Skerrett, one of the guides who take guests on weekly birding tours of the estate said “being able to see so many water birds in the desert is a real treat. “The exhibit is open five days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday until June 2, 2019, and admission and parking are free.

The Palm Springs Art Museum Exhibit and donate of the full-time gallery. The One Million Dollars, and they Museum celebrated its 80th Anniversary with one of the biggest fundraisers of the year. The event was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The theme this year was, The Art Is You. It meant that people were the canvas on which the art was projected. The lines to have their photo with many different colorful backgrounds were long and everyone walked away with a picture of themselves in a minute. The Event chair was Steve Maloney, and the Cochairs were Barbara Keller and Ann Sheffer. The guests walked a WHITE carpet to enter the lobby where a THRU very long bar served drinks for everyone. There were a couple of bartenders that showed their expertise by throwing bottles in the air and catching in glasses or throwing several bottles at a time to catch them. The wall had an orange and black mural of shapes to highlight the art of the evening. NAMM 2019 Celebrates All Things Music
The Anaheim Convention Center hosted the 2019 NAMM Show. Photo: Bob Steshetz Star-studded concert events, intimate booth performances, new music making-related products and educational sessions make the NAMM Show an essential destination for those who make or love music. This year’s Winter NAMM
also showcased a limited-edition Chris Cornell Tribute Model ES335; only 250 of the instruments will be available. The company staged many live music events, notably the outstanding “NAMM Jam” featuring Billy F Gibbons (ZZ Top), Peter Frampton, Robby Krieger (The Doors) and
Singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan performing at Yamaha’s second annual “All-Star Concert on the Grand” at 2019 NAMM Show. Photo: Bob Steshetz Show was held at the Anaheim Convention Center January 24-27, 2019, with this writer also attending the NAMM Media Preview Day on Jan. 23 to get an early, in-depth glimpse at several musicmaking products on the eve of their debut to the more than 100,000 music enthusiasts who attended the event. Here are some of the standout performances and cool gear I experienced during my long weekend at the 2019 NAMM Show! Gibson Brands returned to NAMM in a big way in 2019. The iconic Nashville, Tennesseebased guitar maker was a major presence during the show. The company teamed up with Chuck Berry’s son and grandson to create Berry’s ES-350T (to be released later this year). Gibson www.desertstarweekly.com
Nancy Wilson (Heart) staged at City National Grove of Anaheim. That show was truly spectacular with several emerging artists including Austin, Texas-based Emily Wolfe and Black Pistol Fire adding firepower to the night. The Yamaha Grand Plaza Stage hosted almost continuous music across the event, including three major concerts. Although I missed the Thursday night affair, I did catch the Friday and Saturday night headline events. Yamaha’s second annual “All-Star Concert on the Grand” featuring Sarah McLachlan, Jonathan Butler, James “J.T.” Taylor, Jon McLaughlin, and Loren Allred. The terrific concert event featured Yamaha artist/ bassist Nathan East (Fourplay) as musical director. Elle King & the Brethren delivered a strong 80-minute set on Saturday. King
displayed her unique hybrid of blues, rock, pop and country via a mix of original material and several artful covers (Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” and Paul McCartney’s “Oh! Darling”). She capped her well-received outing with the pop-rock hit “Ex’s & Oh’s.” Speaking of Yamaha Corporation of America, the company showcased a number of innovative products during the show. Among the most impressive was the Yamaha Sonogenic “Keytar,” an affordable-for-all $299 keyboard that will appeal to those who don’t know how to play any instrument as well as those who do! I was able to watch as musician-producer Plasmic demonstrated the ease and fun of using the shoulder-worn Sonogenic SGS-500, which she wore like a guitar while fingering the instrument’s 37 mini-keys. The use of the “Keytar” is bolstered by Yamaha’s free companion Chord Tracker app that links the user’s iTunes music library so they can accompany their favorite artist. “There are no wrong notes,” Plasmic explained. Information: https://usa.yamaha.com/. Ciari Guitars unveiled a premium electric guitar that folds in half. The full-size Ascender Travel guitar is designed to be played like any favorite electric guitar, and then quickly folded and placed into a protective backpack that can be taken on the road and even tucked safely

Those wondering if the instrument sounds as cool as it looks should watch the amazing video on the company’s official website: CiariGuitars.com. Those looking to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Woodstock might want to get the C.F. Martin & Co. DX Woodstock 50th Anniversary model complete with custom artwork by Robert F. Goetzl that replicates his iconic Woodstock music festival poster from 1969. The X Series D-14 model also includes certified sustainable wood parts and sounds wonderful. Information: MartinGuitar.com. In a recent column I declared that singer-songwriterguitarist Alice Wallace’s “Into the Blue” is one of the first great albums of 2019. Released via Rebelle Road Records on Jan. 18, the 10-track album is a perfect showcase for the Southern California songstress’ winning mix of contemporary Americana and traditional country music styles. Performing at the Shubb Capos booth on
Jan. 26, Wallace was joined by virtuoso fiddle player Xander Hitzig for a 15-minute set featuring several original cuts as well as an inspired cover of Don Walser’s “Rolling Stone From Texas,” the latter featuring Wallace’s impressive yodeling that mirrored Hitzig’s dazzling play on his fiddle. The new original “Santa Ana Winds” was driving and infectious to be sure while Wallace’s top-flight vocals bolstered the track. And sure enough, Wallace’s capo worked perfectly as she was able to raise the pitch of her acoustic guitar by shortening the neck; “I couldn’t play a show without my capo,” she said. Information: AliceWallaceMusic.com. Finally, Taylor Guitars always offers a wide range of great concerts in the Southern California-based company’s booth. I was most impressed by roots rocking trio White Buffalo. The trio’s energetic set impressed the Saturday afternoon crowd with a forceful mix of roots, Americana and Southern rock stylings. Border Patrol Agents Take Down Large Methamphetamine Shipment By Desert Star Staff SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Highway 86 checkpoint arrested a female suspected of smuggling methamphetamine concealed in natural voids of the vehicle Wednesday afternoon. The arrest occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m., when a 45-year-old Mexican national female approached the Border Patrol checkpoint in a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. As the vehicle approached
the primary inspection booth, a Border Patrol K9 team alerted to the vehicle. The primary agent referred the vehicle for a secondary inspection. During the secondary inspection, agents discovered 37 wrapped packages hidden within the quarter panels and spare tire, which tested positive for the characteristics of methamphetamines. “Narcotic trafficking organizations try all types of concealment methods to import dangerous drugs into our communities,” said
Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez. “Our agents’ diligence successfully thwarted this smuggling attempt, shielding our neighborhoods from this poison.” The narcotics had a combined weight of approximately 41 pounds with an estimated street value of $1,328,640. The driver, vehicle, and the narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.

Locals angry after KKK robe fetches hefty $3,000 at PA auction By Desert Star Staff An anonymous buyer in Snyder County paid $3,000 for a KKK robe and hood, far exceeding the auctioneers’ expectations. But the sale made many locals unhappy, with some comparing it to buying bricks from Auschwitz. “We don’t mean to offend anyone,” auctioneer Dawn Miller said after bringing out the “authentic” white outfit from the mid-1920s during bidding at the Beaver Springs Auction Center on Saturday. Such robes were used by white supremacists to conceal their identity as they harassed black people and Jews. The item already caused controversy before the auction, with several people, including a respected local pastor, complaining about it. So, the crowd of more than 100 people became visibly excited. Dawn and her husband
Frank Miller told local media that with all the outcry and media attention, they expected the garment to fetch at least $750. Their expectations were, however, exceeded by four times. The robe was gone in just two minutes for $3,000, with Frank saying he “was totally surprised” by the final price. Two people from the audience, five telephone bidders and one person who submitted his offer in advance fought over the item. A Pennsylvania collector, whose identity the auctioneers refused to disclose, came out as the winner in the end, but there weren’t many in Snyder Country who applauded his success. A local man told WNEPTV that “it’s just something that should not be sold.” The Ku Klux Klan hood and robe spread the message of “hatred and I wouldn’t want anybody to make any profit off of it,” he said.
arguing for regime changes in oil-rich countries around the world… but only if US companies benefit. “I’m interested in Libya if we take the oil. If we don’t take the oil, no interest, “he told Fox in 2012 a month after the disastrous US-led NATO intervention which left Libya a failed state. “We’ll help you, but we want 50 percent of your oil,” he said of Libya in another interview. Trump has also advocated a “take the oil” policy for Iraq in the past. Bolton isn’t the only one to admit oil is a primary factor in US actions in Venezuela. Florida’s Republican senator Marco Rubio tweeted last week that refining the muchsought after heavy crude from Venezuela already “supports great jobs” for Americans in the Gulf Coast. Despite clear admissions that oil is a primary interest for Trump and Bolton, that aspect of Venezuela’s crisis has been mostly overlooked by mainstream media in the US and Europe, with journalists,
who are usually more hostile to Trump, unquestioningly adopting the narrative that the intervention is about “democracy” instead. Last week, Trump recognized Venezuelan opposition politician Juan Guaido as the country’s interim president, declared Maduro’s presidency “illegitimate” and called for
The buyer of the KKK garment “has to be someone with more money than brains. Who would want it and for what reason? It’s like having a brick from Auschwitz. I wouldn’t want it,” another Snyder County resident said. But Dawn Miller, who has four decades of auctioneering experience, said she didn’t call off the sale because the robe is “a historical item.” She was backed by one of the unlucky bidders who said he came especially for the KKK outfit but could only offer $2,900 for it. “It’s rare to see around here,” the man explained, asking for his name not to be mentioned. “It’s a part of history. You can’t erase it,” he said he would have likely given the robe to a museum hosting white supremacy artefact if he had won.
Trump adviser Bolton admits US interest in Venezuela’s ‘oil capabilities’ By Desert Star Staff With the Venezuela crisis escalating after the US’ provocative intervention against elected leader Nicolas Maduro last week, an honest admission by National Security Advisor John Bolton was overlooked by the media: It’s about oil. Trump’s top adviser, who has been branded the most fervent hawk in the administration, has admitted that Washington is heavily invested in political outcomes in Caracas particularly because of Venezuela’s vast untapped oil reserves. Indeed, it just so happens that Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves. Speaking to Fox Business host Trish Regan, Bolton said that the US had “a lot at stake” in Venezuela’s political crisis, specifically citing the country’s oil and the economic benefit it could bring to the US. It will make a big difference to the United States economically if we could have American oil companies

invest in and produce the oil capabilities in Venezuela. During a separate appearance on Fox Business, Bolton was less explicit, telling host Stuart Varney that getting rid of Maduro was paramount since he was bringing “countries with interests hostile to ours” into the country and ousting him would be a “potential major step forward” for “business” opportunities in the region. Of course, Bolton also repeated the usual lines, claiming the US intervention in Venezuela’s domestic politics was about ousting an “authoritarian” leader and protecting democracy and human rights — but the comments about oil betrayed what many have suggested is the underlying reason and driving force behind the White House’s interference. Bolton’s interest in seeing the US economy profit off Venezuela’s plentiful natural resources shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Trump himself has a history of

regime change. The European Union, along with US allies in the Western Hemisphere quickly lined up to back Trump’s position, while Russia, China, Turkey and Venezuela’s allies in Latin America spoke out against the move. Maduro’s government has accused the US of trying to engineer a “coup” and waging an “economic war” against it. www.desertstarweekly.com

By Desert Star Staff RICHMOND, Va. — As many people try to recover from the impact of the government shutdown, there is a renewed focus on helping contractors and private-sector workers save for retirement. On Tuesday, a state House subcommittee is scheduled to hear House Bill 2431, which would establish a board to create a plan for employees of small businesses and private employers to contribute to a retirement plan. A state-ordered feasibility study found such a plan would benefit Virginians since many more workers are in or nearing retirement with insufficient resources to sustain themselves. David DeBiasi, associate state director with AARP Virginia, said the purpose of the state’s “Work and Save” plan is to help people take their futures into their own hands by setting up Individual
Retirement Accounts. “The thing about human behavior is that you know anyone can go out and get an IRA, but people typically don’t do it,” DeBiasi said. “So, if you offer them, like, a 401(k) at work, they are 15 times more likely to get it.” DeBiasi said 1.2 million Virginians don’t have access to a 401(k) program at work. While gaining traction in several states, the plans are opposed by many in the financialservices industry who view them as unfair competition for investment firms and banks. However, DeBiasi said the program would be completely voluntary, as the state and employers wouldn’t be on the hook for any gains or losses, and the state would provide oversight in the public-private partnership. “The money would be invested by the private industry of financial services, and the state would just help set up

Leigh Chapman, director of the voting rights program at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said this is a true democracy-reform bill. “So the bill would make Election Day a holiday and create nationwide automatic voter registration, which could actually get 50 million more voters on the rolls,” Chapman said. “It would also have provisions restoring the right to vote for people with felony convictions, and
that would get 6.1 million more voters on the rolls.” The bill also would try to limit the dominance of big money in politics by strengthening disclosure requirements. Multiple states including Missouri take a “use it or lose it” approach and purge inactive voters, something HR 1 would prohibit. Missouri also removes voters whose legal names do not match exactly with the state voter list. The Show-Me State currently does not have early voting and requires voters to opt-in rather than automatically being registered when they visit the Department of Motor Vehicles. HR 1 would set a national standard of two weeks for early voting, as well as weekend and evening voting. Chapman noted a number of red-state legislatures have passed laws to
A sweeping bill in the U.S. House would expand access to the polls and limit the influence of money restrict voting in recent years. “Opponents of democracy have really worked to silence the voices of Americans by voter-registration restrictions,
strict voter ID laws and purges of the voter rolls,” she said. HR 1 is expected to pass the House easily, but it may not get a vote in the
Senate because Majority Leader Mitch McConnell sees it as a partisan move, even calling it the “Democrat Politician Protection Act.”
Opioid Crisis: Medication Playing Role in Ending Addiction By Desert Star Staff MEDFORD, Ore. — In Oregon, care facilities are turning to medication to help some patients struggling with opioid addiction. Medicationassisted Treatment has been shown to be effective for dealing with symptoms of withdrawal. Doctors and nurses administer drugs such as buprenorphine to detoxify a patient’s system and replace their opioid use. Dr. Brandon Lynch, a medical director at Asante Physician Partners in Medford, provides MAT in a primary-care setting with support from Jackson Care Connect. Although it doesn’t work for everyone, Lynch said the treatment is unique in that it works fairly quickly.
“[Some] go from being disabled from their condition - you know, unable to work, unable to meet their normal functions of life and their relationships and jobs - and relatively rapidly stabilize and start earning those relationships, earning their life back, getting jobs back,” Lynch said. A series of studies have found half of patients treated with buprenorphine weren’t using drugs after 18 months, and more than 60 percent were drug-free after 3.5 years. Lynch said it’s important to combine this with other treatments, such as behavioral-health therapy. Dr. Safina Korieshi is medical director of Columbia Pacific CCO, which facilitates MAT in Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook counties. Her

As that happens, Korieshi said the next and most important step will be a shift in how opioid addiction is perceived. “It is absolutely a chronic disease,” Korieshi said. “We should view it that way and need to treat it that way as a medical community and as a community at large in 10 YEAR FIXED INTEREST ONLY order to really help these 40 YEAR AMORTIZED people overcome and LOANS TO $10 MILLION manage their disease.” Lynch agreed opioid addiction needs to be considered a health crisis. “Still, a significant portion of our population sees it as a moral problem,” Lynch observed. “And

CV Rep Theatre Stages “White” as its final production

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member of American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) When a theatre closes its doors for good that’s usually a cause for tears and lamentations. The Temples and/or live theatre venues in the world can ill afford any more venue closings in the time of media cutbacks and their support for the Arts. Outside of hard cash, the media is the mother’s milk of continuing support for keeping the doors open. But not to worry. CV REP, one of the finest Equity theatres in the Coachella Valley isn’t closing its doors but merely transferring from its cozy 88 seat venue location at the Atrium in Rancho Mirage, to their new home in the former IMAX Movie theatre in Cathedral City. Producing Artistic Director Ron Celona’s dream of bringing Equity theatre productions to all of the Coachella Valley has been incubating for six years. On March 15, 2019, CV REP will debut its new 208 seat, state-of-the-art theatre, with the musical “Chess.” Stay tuned for more information. But first, we need to discuss the current production “White,” written by James Ijames, and deftly directed by Ron Celona. It’s a uniquely structured comedy with dark undertones that deals in how people relate to one another using the prism of skin color, sexual identity, racial diversity, privilege or lack of it. And that’s only part of the issues presented in this nontraditional comedy with a bite. It’s intensely provocative to be sure. The question for me is what is playwright Ijames trying to say to his audiences? What are the audiences expected do with this information once they have processed it? Which by the way, is excellently performed by its outstanding four-member cast If the play’s dialogue hit’s one as a bit enigmatic, does the story even as it unfolds then remain an enigma? Things to ponder... When the lights, cleverly and neatly positioned for maximum effect, by Lighting Designer Moira Wilkie www.desertstarweekly.com
Whitaker, come up, we’re at the prestigious Parnell Gallery, being welcomed by Gallery director Jane (Charlotte Munson). The second scene takes place in a cozy apartment, designed by CV REP Emmywinning resident designer Jimmy Cuomo. It’s the home of mildly successful, young, gay, painter Gus (convincingly played by Paul David Story, and his schoolteacher partner Tanner (engagingly portrayed by Anthony Saludares). Gus is ambitious and looking to climb another rung upward to further his career as an artist. Tanner is quite happy with correcting his students’ papers and essays while enjoying the companionship of Gus. Ambition in creative artists is usually a good thing and necessary for success. Gus’ friend Jane has been recently promoted to “New Visions in American Art” curator at the prestigious Parnell Galleries. Jane has her Gallery’s mandate and intends to debut the necessary emerging artists that meet her goals of presenting artists of diversity, color, and gender, but must be relatively unknown. Gus is confident that long-time friend Jane will present his latest canvases at the gallery opening. Gus, yes, were friends, but I’m not looking for more works from a white dude, Jane explains. It’s a shattering shot across Gus’ bow which deflates him and his relationship with Jane for a while until he experiences an astral visit from a god-like figure that suspiciously resembles Diana Ross. Hippies of the 60’s often claimed of experiencing such voices and visions after spending a session with Harvard Professor Thomas Leary of LSD notoriety or latenight mushroom snacks spiked with unknown ingredients. Gus ‘epiphany leads him to create a back-story, as cover, for his scheme of having his paintings appear in the exhibit at the Parnell Galleries by hiring Vanessa, an African American actress (a sensational Franceli Chapman) to submit his paintings, as her own. There are echoes of Woody Allen’s 1976 comedy “The Front,” in Mr. Ijames’ plotline. Instead of blacklisted writers, we’re now dealing
with reverse discrimination issues of white painters. I admit it’s not a very strong line of attack to really have legislation do what common sense could easily accomplish. But it does achieve what playwright Ijames and others have complained about all along – “whiteness” is a definite advantage. Perhaps, he wrote his play to bring the issue of discrimination to more people’s attention. It’s long been said that before you begin blankly condemning or tossing rocks, try walking a mile in the other guy’s or gal’s footsteps.
Vanessa at first demurs to Paul’s proposition to be his alter-ego. But later decides it’s just another acting gig, so why not. Paul introduces Vanessa to Jane as a painter with talent recommended by some of Paul’s friends. Vanessa charms Jane who is excited with finding a talented woman of color that she can introduce as one of many that will appear at her upcoming “New Visions in American Art” exhibition. Things appear to be coming along as the exhibition nears. Jane is super-excited with her project. Paul is uneasy because of subtle twists in Vanessa’s behavior of late. Signs begin to creep into the ploy about the paintings and their origin. Also, Paul’s relationship with Tanner is becoming strained because of Paul’s plan, and Vanessa’s strange behavior. To divulge any further details about “White” won’t be coming from me. No spoiler alerts here. This I can say; however, this is a production that shouldn’t be missed. It’s performed without an intermission and runs about 90 minutes. When it comes to the actors in “White” and just how they grab hold of their characters
and how they interact with one another, is terrific. For example, they are always in the moment, always reaching and stretching their talent to draw the audience toward them. Always generous toward one another yet work as individual professional actors, who blend and work as a unit. It’s good stuff. The technical credits over the last eight years at the Atrium have always been outstanding. For the “White production:” Sets by Jimmy Cuomo, Lighting by Moira Wilkie Whitaker, Costumes by Aalsa Lee, Sound by Kate Fechtig, Hair and Make-up Designs by Lynda Shaeps, along with Associate Designer Doug Morris, and Louise Ross, as stage manager, complete the creative team led by director Celona. This the last CV REP production that will be performed in the Atrium. I’ve seen and reviewed most of them. It has been a wonderful run with many outstanding productions and many memories to be savored from the last eight years. So, Goodbye Atrium. Hello, CV REP in their new home in Cathedral City beginning March 15, 2019.
