Layne, in addition to her many performing credits is the Managing and Co-Artistic Director of the Palm Springs-based Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT). “Hello Dolly!” is one of the most endearing musicals

in Broadway history, running from April 1964 to 1969, making it at the time, the third longest running musical production on Broadway. Channing played the sassy and clever matchmaker in 2,844 performances, without missing a show. That too, is a record. It’s been revived four times on Broadway over the years with fifty two actors playing “Dolly”. USC is honored to be the caretaker of this Los Angeles treasure,” said USC President C. L. Max Nikias. “Together with United, we can ensure the Coliseum’s future as a world-class venue and true community asset.”

USC operates the Coliseum under a 98-yearlease agreement with the city, county and state. That lease included provisions to secure naming rights that would help underwrite the restoration. “United has been a part of the Los Angeles community for more than 80 years. Sponsoring the Memorial Coliseum, an athletic and architectural icon, as well as USC, an intellectual

and cultural beacon, reaffirms our broader commitment to serving the people, communities and business of this region,” said Janet Lamkin, President, California for United Airlines. “These investments to renovate and improve the stadium, as well as to sponsor the USC Trojans as they pursue excellence Continues on Page 5

Dear D.A.: No need to shut up if you’re right… and you are right. The Davis-Stirling Act at Civil Code 4935 lists the only matters which can be handled in closed session. That statute is part of the “Open Meeting Act,” sometimes confused with the Brown Act (Government Code 54950). The Brown Act applies to public bodies, while the Open Meeting Act applies to residential common interest developments. Per Civil Code 4935, only the following matters are allowed in closed session: personnel (dealing with employees paid

directly by the association), member discipline or common area damage reimbursement hearings, lien foreclosure votes and delinquency payment plan discussions, litigation, and formation of contracts. If it does not fall within that list, it cannot be discussed in closed session. Of the permissible executive session topics, two are commonly overused - personnel and contract formation. Many boards are unaware that “personnel” does not include filling board vacancies, or appointing or removing committee members or chairs. In the Open Meeting Act context, personnel discussions are discussions about HOA employees. Also, usually, the HOA manager is not an employee, but works for a management firm and so is not employed by the HOA… and is not “personnel” in this context. The other area frequent abuse of executive session involves the subject of

“formation of contracts.” The language is clear – “formation” is not vendor selection, or discussion of proposals, but the formation of the contract terms after selecting the prospective vendor in an open meeting. Frankly, many lawyers allow or even encourage the improper expansion of this topic so that all vendor interviewing, discussion, and selection is conducted in secret. This hurts the legitimacy of the board and violates the law. Vendor discussions, except for negotiations and litigation, are for open meetings. When a vendor is being considered, vendor presentations and discussions about those presentations should be during open session. Why cannot the members hear the pros and cons of the different proposals? The HOA members attending cannot participate in board discussions, but they should be able to listen. After the preferred vendor is selected,

the contract terms must be finalized. That discussion of terms along with the HOA’s counteroffer and negotiating strategy, occurs in closed session, to protect its negotiating position. Boards sometimes justify doing so much of their deliberation in closed session because of their fear of interference or disruption from attending homeowners. However, the answer is not to work in secret, but instead to train directors and non-directors toward more orderly open meetings. Thanking you for your question, Kelly.

By Janice Gough Most politicians avoid addressing the Solvency of Social Security, as it could kill their re-election. Funding Social Security has been a pressing concern as far back as the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration. When Social Security was first introduced by Franklin D. Roosevelt, there were fourteen employees in the workforce compared to those who qualified for benefits. Today, the equation is One to One. The General Fund receives most of the contributions from Payroll, (6.2% Tax, FICA withholding. Large unemployment can impact it significantly. Our Presidents have failed to address the future insolvency problem, which is why we have the crisis we are in today. Politicians have been running Social Security as a Ponzi scheme from presidents Eisenhower through Obama. They’ve all presided over a take-as-yougo policy, taking from the old and promising the young. Government accountants are complicit in this fraud on the American public, as they are told to hide the truth. Today, Social Security is bankrupt. The country is bankrupt. We have a huge off-the-books bill that’s no different from the kind of thing Bernie Madoff left his investors with. Top Analyst state that based on current holdings, Social Security will be defunct by 2035. There is

not a need, currently, for the Social Security Administration to dip into its trust fund to pay benefits. The fund has about $2.8 trillion in assets on its balance sheet. But starting in 2022, that fund will operate at a deficit and by 2034, is expected to be bone-dry. This would leave recipients with a 23% decrease in pay. The government has squandered the contributions by handing them out to older people who aren’t asked to pay for their retirement. The government has kept the entire enterprise off the books, which is no different from what Enron did with its accounting. There are a few relatively minor additional changes to the program in 2018, such as full retirement age rising to 66 and four months, and, for higher earners who collect benefits at full retirement age, maximum income increasing from $2,687 to $2,788. The 2018 2% cost-of-living adjustment to Social Security will be wiped out with the increased cost of Medicare Part B, (covering outpatient care and other services). Government always seems to claw back what they give you. Different proposals are being discussed to restore solvency. They require either a decrease in benefits paid, an increase in taxes or extending the Full Retirement Age. One expert on Social Security proposes a system wherein workers would contribute 10% of their pay on top of FICA tax, to a personal account. These collective funds would be invested by computer

in a global index of stocks, bonds and real estate. In the Social Security big picture, is a system that needs a total overhaul, according to some experts. But that would likely require a tax hike and force some of the changes I have mentioned. This would force our generation to pay for some of this and not put it all on our kids and grandkids.

Billionaires Made Enough in 2017 to End Poverty Seven Times Over

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Last year, billionaires saw their wealth increase enough to end extreme poverty around the world seven times over, according to a report from the global charity organization Oxfam. The report, “Reward Work, Not Wealth,” says 82 percent of the wealth created in 2017 went to the top 1 percent, and that a new billionaire was created every two days. Paul O’Brien, Oxfam America’s vice president for policy and advocacy, says

this growing inequality isn’t good news for workers. “It’s not a good time to be a worker on the wrong end of the economic chain,” he states. “What we essentially have are market economies where the markets aren’t being regulated and the rules are essentially being rigged by those who can afford to do so, and that’s where you see extreme wealth emerging and people getting stuck.” Some criticize the report, saying it buries the good news that the bottom 50 percent of income earners around the

world actually are doing better than previously thought. The report focuses on the inequality women face in the workplace. It says women provided an estimated $10 trillion in unpaid work caring for someone else in 2017. Washington state is no stranger to billionaires. The two richest men in the world, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, live in the Evergreen State, as well as eight other billionaires. O’Brien actually praises Bezos’ investment in journalism through his ownership of The Washington Post and Gates’

charity work around the world. But O’Brien says the wealthy also have enough power to hurt the rest of society when they don’t share their prosperity. “If human dignity is dependent on everybody having enough power and rights to be able to lift themselves out of poverty – to live with dignity – should any individual have that much power?” he stresses. The Oxfam report has also been chided as overly critical of capitalism and free markets. O’Brien says it’s the

opposite – that the organization actually wants to see markets work for everyone. “How do we actually create incentives for companies to grow, markets to work, without creating these extreme realities for people on both ends of the equation?” he raises. O’Brien says governments should incentivize business structures that are more beneficial to workers, such as cooperatives, and find a way to compensate people who work in the care economy.

By Desert Star Staff As January ends and the holiday bills start to roll in, Debt.com reports survey finding about American’s money regrets and hopes. Of the 1,300 survey respondents, over 77 percent said they are making financial resolution in 2018 while only 43 percent said they made them in the past. The two biggest financial regrets selected pertain to credit scores. Forty-four percent said running-up credit card balances or maxing them out hurting their credit score was the number one regret. Second place went to missing payments and damaging credit scores at 23 percent. “Credit scores impact many aspects of life from mortgages and auto loans to getting hired at a job you’re applying for and in light of the recent data breaches it is not surprising that credit scores are a major concern,” says Howard Dvorkin, chairman of Debt.com. Other notable

regrets include: • Letting debt go into collections (19%) • Draining all the money from savings accounts (18%) • Taking money out of retirement accounts (7.5 %) Of the over 56 percent of respondents who didn’t make past resolutions, more than 26 percent said it was due to their finances being is such bad shape they didn’t know where to start. Dvorkin warns, “If people feel their finances are spiraling out of control, the worst thing they can do is to do nothing. Time only makes money problems more harmful and the lack of action compounds issues greatly. People need to reach out and find help. That’s why we formed Debt. com as a safe space where people can get information and trusted answers.” Money goals for 2018 included: • Paying off credit cards (70%)

Groups Criticize Move to Set Wyo. Grizzly Hunt

By Desert Star Staff CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Conservation groups are speaking out against a proposed grizzly bear hunt already set for Wyoming this fall. The hunt is scheduled to take place in areas outside of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Recently, the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission directed its staff to plan the first grizzly hunt in many years, a move made possible when the US Fish and Wildlife Service took the Yellowstone grizzlies off the federal endangered species list last year. Now, their management is up to the states of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Bonnie Rice is the senior representative for the Sierra Club’s “Our Wild America” campaign and for the Greater Yellowstone region. She says the state is

making a hasty decision. “I think it sends a really bad signal that, pretty much the minute the federal protections are removed, this state is rushing to have a grizzly bear hunt,” says Rice. The Sierra Club is part of an ongoing lawsuit challenging the delisting action. The state argues that only a few bears will be shot, and has indicated it plans to sell hunting licenses for $600 apiece to instate hunters and $6,000 dollars to those coming from out of state. Rice notes that the money made from the hunt pales in comparison to the state’s $5.6 billion outdoor recreation economy. One group estimates 56 Yellowstone grizzlies died in 2017, the vast majority killed by people. “There’s so much more money that is generated by (Skeeze/Pixabay) people coming to Wyoming, and the other states in “And I think this is going to Grizzly Bear Study Team year, primarily at the hands Greater Yellowstone, for the backfire. Hoosiers Hit Hard by the Flu

The elderly and small children are most at risk from the influenza virus. (nih.gov)

By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS — This year, Indiana and the rest of the country have been stricken by the flu. People with flu-like symptoms are filling doctor’s offices and emergency rooms. Dozens of Hoosiers have died, including last week’s death of a 37-year-old mother of two from Plainfield who was diagnosed with the flu just a couple of days before. Sara Hallyburton, a respiratory epidemiologist with the state Department of Health, said. Unfortunately, the flu season is far from over. “We may have peaked for influenza, but it’s hard to tell because it has not dropped or stayed the same level, so it could still go up yet,” Hallyburton said. “It’s still to be determined.” According to the State Department of Health, 107 people have died in

Indiana from the flu so far, this season. Last year there were 105 flu deaths. Hallyburton said most of the people who have died from the flu in Indiana have been over the age of 65. She said many times it’s because people don’t get medical treatment, thinking it’s a simple cold they can beat. “If you have a really high fever, you’re dehydrated, or you’re having shortness of breath, or fever is not going down, you should definitely go see your doctor,” she said. Across the country, deaths from the flu this season are on track to equal or surpass that of the 2014-2015 flu season. In that year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated, 34 million Americans got the flu, 710,000 were hospitalized, and about 56,000 died.

Kids’ Advocates Blast State’s Appeal of Foster-Care Ruling

By Desert Star Staff CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Children’s advocates are crying foul after state officials appealed ruling mandating numerous changes to the state’s foster care system. The order describes the system as “still broken,” and lists additional steps to protect abused and neglected children. The Texas Legislature approved a package of improvements last year, but the court says the measures failed to address all the problems. Will Francis, government relations director with the Texas Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, says Attorney General Ken Paxton’s immediate appeal to block the order shows that state officials are not yet committed to doing the right thing. “Overall, they made sure that child welfare was a primary focus. And the fact that our attorney general is saying, ‘Well, that’s enough,’ and that we’re really not owning these really horrible outcomes for kids in the long-term care of the state – it does not send the message that we really want to fix things,” says Francis. The same US District Court Judge – Janis Jack in Corpus Christi – ruled in 2015 that the Texas foster care system violated children’s civil rights. The new ruling orders that caseworkers must visit each foster child at least once a month, puts limits on their caseloads and mandates an increase in staffing levels. In his appeal, Paxton criticized the ruling, saying an unelected judge had “improperly assume(d) control of a state institution.” Francis says the 65,000 victims of abuse or neglect seen each year in Texas are www.desertstarweekly.com

A federal judge has ordered changes to the Texas foster care system, and appointed people to monitor and report on its progress for the next three years. HOROSCOPES ARIES

Slowly over the next many years, so much that is within you, often unknown and unheeded, will surface. So much has been forgotten. When remembered they become “found objects” of self, awaiting the right time and season to emerge. Memories will surface in dreams, symbols, amulets and talismans. As the mystery of yourself is revealed, unseen worlds will be seen. Faith and trust and hope are your guides.

TAURUS In the coming times, you will be needed by a wider group of like-minded, socially conscious, and spiritually aware people. You will all be artistic, creative and quite unusual. You will create, build and form a community that is the template for the new culture and civilization. You have sought to create this. Continue to imagine it. First the storm, then thunder, then the Voice of the Silence.

GEMINI Should you feel uncertain about your work in the world, know that this is part of the fire’s function, attempting to refine you into the new ways of being, centering you in the heart. The heart needs stillness and silence. Fiery ways slowly undermine the idea that you can act like everyone else. You can’t. What you’re left with is your imagination. What

JANUARY 31 – FEBRUARY 6, 2018 ASTROLOGICAL FORECAST BY RISA D’ANGELES

do you imagine your future to be?

CANCER Inspired and immersed in the chambers of the subtle heart...you touch a cosmic magnet and the fire of space. You will enter deeper into mystical and/or esoteric teachings. It will be good to read Rumi. You learn new ways, enter into new places of knowledge, gather ancient wisdoms. You are called to share all that you know. Humanity is thirsty for real knowledge. You love humanity.

LEO The fires of space restore the equilibrium of humanity. You are that fire. There may be explorations, deep and profound, into issues concerning life, death, sex, rock & roll, and everything else transformative. Taxes, too. And freedom and money. Questions like what is death and what is the function of sex? Am I sexy? What’s sexy to me? And how do we want our money to be used to create the new paradigm shift?

VIRGO You will see everything through the lens of the spiritual. You will see and recognize the life force, a fire within all cells. Some Virgos may see the actual angels (devas) building the kingdoms. You will discover what unconditional

love means. First by seeking it. Then by providing it. A sacred contract. You will make new connections. Love will be released. Everything’s different than before.

LIBRA A new authenticity will come forth from within and your lifestyle will change. Forgiveness will begin, then continue. Forgiving the self first, is good. What (whom) do you think needs forgiving? Commune with all with one heart. Then the cosmic magnet will breathe through you. Let your daily routines focus on creating and sustaining vibrant health. Become very careful and caring with health. Let direct communion in the heart lead the way. Then you distribute the holy fragrance of life itself.

SCORPIO You are the master of illusion. You will meet others who also have your gift, protecting themselves against all emotional intrusions. You will come to a point when feelings of aloneness must give way to making true contact. Romance may find you. You can be “romanced” by ideas, by a rare coin or flower, by an angel, a stone or one of the kingdoms. You will become intimate in knowledge with what humanity needs.

SAGITTARIUS

There might be an inner return (memories) to family of origin, family history; it’s successes, disappointments, strengths and yearnings. Learning what sacrifices the family made. Realizing you hold these for your family (family karma, the carrier). You yearn for clarity, for release, for freedom, for a new reality of home. Also for authentic closeness and care. Let’s pray for it together.

CAPRICORN Gradually you notice the many forms of non-verbal communication and expression surrounding you. It’s as if you can hear (and see) the angels (devas) building form out of the air. Read again the Findhorn Garden. Your intuition senses all subtle signals unknown by most others. This stimulates your imagination. Community, gardens, fields of flowers are your keywords. If allergies arise, turn to homeopathics.

PISCES You become more subtle, refined, changeable, whimsical and elusive. You may feel the need for more rest, reflection and contemplation. You may experience Oneness, the Love of God. Your identity may shift and lines blur around boundaries. You become mysterious and reflect upon the needs of others. You “save” others by inspiring compassion. You then need to rest more. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.

AQUARIUS Make sure to be careful with money. It may feel that the outflow is greater than the inflow. And perhaps it is. Eventually your ideas about money will change. New values will replace previously accepted values about money and how it’s made. A new spiritual reality comes forth and you enter gladly into the new sharing society. Watch for this. In the meantime, be prudent with all resources.

Astronaut feces on menu for future missions to Mars, study claims

By Desert Star Staff Astronauts on their way to Mars may be required to eat their own waste in the form of a recycled paste. The innovation is being touted as a possible nutritional solution for longterm manned space missions. Poop recycling, or “biological waste treatment” as the Penn State research team is calling it, converts human waste into a potential food source. “We envisioned and tested the concept of simultaneously treating astronauts’ waste with microbes while producing biomass that is edible either directly or indirectly, depending on safety concerns,” said professor Christopher House. “It’s a little strange, but the concept would be a little bit like Marmite or Vegemite where you’re eating a smear of ‘microbial goo,’” House added. Humans on board deepspace missions to the Red Planet will need to recycle water and nutrients to survive the months-long journey. Bringing food supplies from Earth would take up

valuable space aboard the spacecraft as well as increase fuel consumption, which is why scientists are searching for a more economical solution by growing or generating food en route. In the NASA-funded study, published in Life Sciences in Space Research, researchers put artificial solid and liquid waste through a 4ft-long cylindrical system designed to break waste down using microbes and anaerobic digestion, a process similar to human metabolism. The team reports that process produced Methylococcus capsulatus that was 52 percent protein and 36 percent fats, making it a potential source of nutrition for astronauts in deep-space flight. While indeed interesting, the idea of repurposing human waste in space is not entirely new. In the 2015 sci-fi movie, ‘The Martian,’ astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, used feces to grow potatoes while stranded on Mars. However, House says their system of turning human waste into something

edible is “faster than growing tomatoes or potatoes.” The process is not only valuable for deep-space flight, says House. Astronauts onboard the International Space Station currently recycle a portion of their urine to make January 31, 2018

water, but their solid waste is ejected into the Earth’s atmosphere, where it burns up. The new method would finetune the recycling system to retrieve 85 percent of carbon and nitrogen back from the waste and turn it into protein.

It’s unlikely there’ll be room for treats on deepspace flights, but as of last November, the ISS crews started receiving real ice cream and real pizza to improve their psychological well-being while living and working off-Earth. www.desertstarweekly.com

Hello Modernism Week 2018 By Desert Star Staff February 15th through February 25th is Modernism Week. People will come from all parts of our country and the world to see the various modernist designed homes in Palm Springs. Standing out as the Icon of Mid-Century Modernist design is the Robert Alexander Estate, widely known as the “House of Tomorrow.” Tour this one of a kind Estate, and you will have experienced one of the great Homes of the World and a great tribute to the Alexanders, the prime builders of Modernist Palm Springs. The Robert Alexander Estate is the ultimate statement of the Alexanders’ building ideals and is the pinnacle of the Modernist Movement in Palm Springs. The Great Alexanders, as they were known, describe the father

and son team of George and Robert Alexander. It also refers to the Alexander Construction Company. It is said that the Alexanders built 2200 homes in Palm Springs and made Palm Springs the one of a kind marvel that it is today. After the Second World War, the Alexanders came to the Desert. Air Conditioning made the Desert livable, and their business grew exponentially. When built, these modernist designed homes, which now may sell for millions of dollars, sold from between $17,000 to $25,000. At that time, the Hollywood Movie Stars were only allowed to go a certain distance from the Studios, and Palm Springs met that test. The Alexanders decided to build for themselves, at the top of a promenade overlooking the Hollywood Celebrity

“colony,” with the Mountains as a backdrop, the ultimate modernist home, the Robert Alexander Estate. The Estate is made up of four connected circles, on three levels, with approximately 5500 square feet. In front of the Estate are amazing “stairs” leading to the front door, consisting of rising stepping stones that curve over a beautiful lit waterfall. The Alexanders became the leaders of the “it” group of Celebrities in Palm Springs. They had acquired the Tennis and Racquet Club in Palm Springs, in which, along with their new Estate, they lavishly entertained the Hollywood “it” group. If you like mysteries, the quest of who designed this Masterpiece of Mid-century Modernism, still exists. The Estate would gladly welcome any and all information that could resolve this question once and for all time. What is definite is that the Alexander Estate is a beautiful specimen of midcentury modernism, named “The House of Tomorrow”

in an extensive 1960’s Look Magazine spread. The Estate entered a new chapter of its life and became an American cultural icon when Elvis Presley lived in the house in the mid-60’s and where on May 1, 1967, it was to be the place that he was to be married to Priscilla, away from the Hollywood press. However, Rona Barrett, the queen of gossip-reporting of the time, caught wind of the imminent “Wedding of the Century” at the Alexander Estate, and the press descended on Palm Springs. Elvis and Priscilla were forced, in the dark of night, to “escape” the Estate through a back garden path to an awaiting limousine that whisked them to Frank Sinatra’s private jet, which brought them to Las Vegas to a hastily arranged wedding ceremony. After they were married and a brief reception, they immediately flew back to Palm Springs and with Elvis’ posse, close friends, and family, celebrated their wedding and then spent their Honeymoon at Elvis’

home, the Alexander Estate. The fantastic thing about the current Alexander Estate is that the inside of the Estate has lovingly been brought back to the appearance and feel that it had at the time of 1960’s Look Magazine spread and when Elvis lived there, down to recreating the twenty-foot curving sofa in the living room and the Master bedroom. The Alexander Estate, the home that the “Builder of Palm Springs” magnificently built as his own home and showpiece, is the zenith of Palm Spring’s Modernism, both inside and out. Tour an Estate that is revered by both Modernism enthusiasts and the legions of Elvis fans. Treat yourself to this once in a lifetime experience. You will never forget it. For more information, please see: ModernismTour.com. Call 760-322-1192 for Tour reservations. Tours held at multiple times daily during Modernism Week.

MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

2018 NAMM Show Roundup Special concert events, under-the-radar on-site performances in merchant booths, the debut of countless new music making-related products and educational sessions make the NAMM Show an essential destination for music lovers. This year’s Winter NAMM Show was held at the Anaheim Convention Center from January 25-28, 2018, with this writer also attending the NAMM Media Preview Day on Jan. 24 to get an early and in-depth look at several highly-anticipated products. Here are some of the highlights of my four-day experience at NAMM last weekend. Concerts and Special Appearances A couple of decades ago, on-site performances at NAMM were not a focus of the event held every January. But once again this year performances were front-andcenter throughout the show. The Yamaha Grand Plaza Stage hosted three special high-profile concerts during NAMM. OK Go performed on Jan. 25; an all-star event featuring Michael McDonald, Melissa Etheridge, Marc Broussard, Dave Koz, Butch Walker, Lindsey Stirling and others on Jan. 26, and Andy Grammer performed on Jan. 27. Those looking for more intimate concert experiences could catch established and up-and-coming artists

in booths throughout the show. My favorite event may well have been the mindblowing performance featuring 14-year-old Brandon “Taz” Niederauer and his excellent four-member band. Performing on Friday afternoon at the D’Angelico Guitars, Niederauer displayed the flashy speed of the late Ten Years After guitar great Alvin Lee with the emotional touch of modern-day bluesman Gary Clark Jr. I have seen young guitarists impress before but Niderauer’s virtuoso licks, burgeoning talents as singer and songwriter as well as bona fide stage presence rival many of his considerably-older contemporaries. His wonderful songs included “I Can’t Live” (a moody, textured blues rock gem) and “Tell Me Now.” I was lucky enough to catch singer-songwriter/guitar greats Shawn Jones and Stephen Inglis performing together at the Lowden Guitars booth on Saturday. Their short and fiery instrumental set ended with a freewheeling version of the Jimi Hendrix classic “Little Wing.” While at the Lowden booth, I also got to check out and was truly impressed with the Northern Irelandbased company’s new GL-10 Electric Guitar. Information: lowdenguitars.com. Taylor Guitars offered a number of must-see concerts. On Thursday, the El Cajon, California-based guitar manufacturer celebrated three emerging Japanese artists. Ai Fujimori, CJ Li and Natsumi Miki showcased the diversity

of Japan’s burgeoning original music scene and the audience packed into the intimate concert space embraced the three artists and the terrific backing trio of young players who added depth to the material. Fast forward to Saturday and I caught three outstanding acts at Taylor. Country music songstress Brennley Brown, who just turned 16, and Nolan Neal (both one-time contestants on NBC-TV’s “The Voice”) delivered strong sets in the early afternoon, while genre-defying Japanese singer-songwriterguitarist Miyavi wowed a packed crowd with his fingerslapping style of guitar and intoxicating songs, especially the rocker “The Others.”

NEW PRODUCTS: Guitars aplenty Yamaha TransAcoustic FG and FS Guitar Series: Yamaha introduced approximately 90 new products at Winter NAMM this year. The Buena Park, California-based company’s TransAcoustic guitar series definitely offers something to get acoustic players excited. Building on the success of the company’s earlier models, the new FGTA and FS-TA puts cutting edge technology into the guitar for an affordable price (the FG-TA is priced at $599). “The guitar is able to create reverb and chorus without any external devices,” explained Yamaha’s Carl Tosten. “It is designed to inspire people to want to play longer.” Information: Yamaha.com. Ovation Guitars / Two Glen Campbell Signature Guitar Models: While country music legend Glen Campbell passed away in August 2017, his legacy lives on in ways that stretch beyond his notable recordings. Fans of the artist’s legendary skills on the fretboard got an early look at two special signature guitar models released by Ovation Guitars that made their debut at NAMM. Campbell’s son Cal Campbell was at NAMM to share the release of the Glen Campbell 2018 American Artist Model, an acoustic guitar crafted in the Ovation Custom Shop in New Hartford, CT. Perhaps even more prized than Glen Campbell’s acoustic instrument was the elusive “Bluebird” model. Designed and hand-crafted exclusively for Campbell in the late 1970s, the Bluebird’s design was based on the Ovation Viper solid body and was produced in both 6-string and 12-string models. The Campbell family loaned Ovation Guitars loaned Glen’s original Bluebird to the guitar maker in order to create the January 31, 2018

Photo by Bob Steshetz extremely limited run of Bluebird replicas (only 10 of the 6-string models and five of the 12-string models will ever be produced!). Information: ovationguitars.com. Fender Musical Instruments Corporation Eric Johnson Stratocaster® Thinline: Virtuoso guitarist Eric Johnson was at NAMM on Jan. 26 to showcase the latest edition of his Eric Johnson Signature Stratocaster Thinline. At an afternoon press conference, Johnson explained he began working with Fender

in 2015 to co-create a new guitar that combined the tones of his favorite semi-hollowbody guitars and his Stratocaster. “To me, my go-to instrument is a Strat. But I’ve always loved hollow body guitars,” Johnson explained. “I used it (the new Thinline guitar) last night (at the City National Grove of Anaheim) and I used it all night.” Johnson’s new guitar will officially be available on Feb. 20, 2018 and will retail for approximately $1,999.99.

The play had its world premiere at Second Stage Theatre’s Uptown Series. The cast from DETC’s core company includes Desert Theatre League Award winners Shawn Abramowitz and Kelley Moody, and DTL nominee Sean Timothy Brown; and, in company debuts, Brian La Belle and Maricela Sandoval. Eve Fromberg is Assistant Director. DETC was recently voted “Best Repertory Company” in the Desert Sun’s 2018 Best of the Valley reader’s poll and in January received 12 Broadway World Awards,

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 11th Annual Desert Woman’s Show was held at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa on January 13th and 14th. Thousands of women descended on this particular event strictly designed for women. Men attend too as they are interested in what women are doing and need. Of course, they were not left out in the shopping experience with vendors like Pete Carlson’s Golf and Tennis and Mares Menswear and more. This is

a multi-themed event with so much to do and see. Shopping is one of the leading events with many vendors lining up to sell, clothing, shoes, purses, jewelry, and more. Women can get their blood pressure taken, have a facial, get a mini massage or get a make-up lesson. There is so much to see and understand information on like skin care, and fitness from experts. Medical experts are there for issues women have. A vendor was offering unique

kitchen designs. The 50 plus vendors are so varied that it takes a while to see them all. Sales and special prices were a treat for shoppers. If women got tired of shopping, they had the opportunity to visit the famous Taste of the Valley from 11:30 to 2:30 each day. Guests had a choice of tasting pizza, organic foods, bread, dessert, and salads while listening to live entertainment. Wines, craft beers and a juice bar for refreshments.Entertainment

was provided by Gabriella Evaro, Lisa Lynn Morgan with Bobby Furgo, The Jann Browne Band, Bryana Evaro, Courtney Chambers and Deanna Bogart who are first class performers. Shopping , etc., was not the only attraction for guests. They could take a yoga class, drink wine and paint, Listen to guest speakers and authors and watch a live cooking demonstration. Master Chef, Shaun O’Neale held a Q&A and book signing

after his presentation of making Spicy Salmon Crudo. Another highlight was the fashion shows each day. The event was sponsored by Desert Vein and Vascular Institute, Desert Regional Medical Center, Clark’s Nutrition, Bymguyz and more. Charities were also involved, Safehouse of the Desert, Women Leaders Forum, The Unforgettable Foundation, Loving All Animals, American Heart Assn. and more.

By Pamela Price When guests arrived at the Palm Springs Convention Center on the evening of January 28th, they did “Enter the World of Warhol” at the Palm Springs Art Museum’s “Not Your Typical Gala” event. As Warhol fans entered, many sporting the iconic Warhol wig, beautiful white hair was suddenly back in style. Welcoming 520 guests to the Museum’s Annual event was Elizabeth Armstrong, The JoAnn McGrath Executive Director of the Palm Springs Art Museum. She announced that over a million dollars had been raised at this year’s Gala. The Honorees, Arlene Schnitzer and Jordan D. Schnitzer, were recognized for their ardent support of

the arts. A neon sign above the entrance to the ballroom evoked the Andy Warhol’s original gallery, “The Factory.” According to the book, Andy Warhol Prints From The Collection of the Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. “Thirty years after Warhol’s death in 1987, his images of celebrity, consumer goods, sex, and disaster among other subjects continue to resonate within a culture beholden to the photograph and its digital descents.” The Palm Springs Art Museum’s exhibition of 250 works of Andy Warhol’s art, from the Schnitzer’s private collection, will open on March 3rd, with a range of Warhol inspired focused educational events planned for the public.

The Sponsors of the Museum’s annual fundraising Gala the first to be staged at a venue other than the Museum were categorized. Donna MacMillan and Harold B. Matzner, Triple Platinum, JoAnn McGrath and Stacey and Greg Renker, Double Platinum and Platinum, Arlene Schnitzer, Jordan D. Schnitzer, Faye Sarkowsky, Annette Bloch, Helene V. Galen. And among those in the Gold and Silver, Thom and Councilwoman Iris Smotrich, Diane and Hal Gershowitz and Eisenhower Medical Center. The theme of “creativity,” Warhol style extended to the cuisine which was artfully exhibited throughout “The

Factory” as rolling images of the inimitable Warhol era was projected on the big screens. Enhancing the general entertainment (from a French chanteuse to with aerial acrobats) was a lavish display of exhibition style cuisine encouraging guests to “create their own dining experience” from the “Can I Dip Your Donut ?” display to the Ironing Board Panini and Soup Shooter Station. Carlos King, Palm Springs interior designer who was sporting an assortment of BillieBoy’s surreal costume jewelry, was chatting it up with Paige Powell he introduced as Andy Warhol’s secretary at one time. Both were impressed with the

Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Sundae Bar and Chocolate Dipping Station. The ‘King of Design’ as one of his pals refers to Carlos, mentioned that BillieBoy, a flamboyant jeweler was a jewel of a friend to Andy Warhol, “really more of a muse,” said Carlos. A reunion of Warhol fans blended with the Gala nonstop. Getting high, entertainment wise were aerial artists choreographed by Fabrice Lemire, Artistic Director of CRYSTAL, by Cirque de Soleil. It was an evening of cultural creativity at every level. Pam Price serves on the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission

NASA Television to Air Live Coverage of Lunar Eclipse

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, - Skygazers are in for a rare treat Wednesday, Jan. 31, when three celestial events combine to create a super blue blood moon. NASA Television and the agency’s website will provide live coverage of the celestial spectacle beginning at 5:30 a.m. EST. Weather permitting, the broadcast will feature views from the varying vantage points of telescopes at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California; Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles; and the University of Arizona’s Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter Observatory. This event offers a rare opportunity to see a supermoon, a blue moon and a lunar eclipse at the same time. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is closer to Earth in its orbit and appears about 14 percent brighter than usual. As the second full moon of the month, this moon is also commonly known as a blue moon, though it will not be blue in appearance. The super blue moon will pass through Earth’s shadow and take on a reddish

tint, known as a blood moon. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and a full moon form a nearperfect lineup in space. The total phase of the eclipse will last 1 hour and 16 minutes. The whole process will take more than four hours. If skies are clear, the U.S. West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii will have the best view of totality, from start to finish. For the eastern U.S. and Canada, a clear view will be limited as the Moon sets and the Sun rises during the early stages of the eclipse. The last total lunar eclipse occurred Sept. 27-28, 2015. The next total lunar eclipse visible across North America will occur Jan. 21, 2019. The Jan. 31 eclipse is the third in a series of supermoons in December 2017 and January 2018. Robust Job Market for Grads Continues in 2018

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE, - With the college spring semester under way, CollegeGrad.com has released the results of its annual employer hiring survey. 2017 was the highest level of entry level hiring on record and, while 2018 continues to be robust, there are also some

signs of weakening. Compared to last year, a high number of employers reported hiring changes—both increases and decreases—of greater than 10 percent. Perennial frontrunner Enterprise Rent-ACar leads the way with 8,500 entry level hires for 2018, a slight drop from 2017.

While overall hiring estimates are down slightly, many employers will hire more entry level hires than in 2017. Caterpillar (69%), Carahsoft (34%), Raytheon (31%), and Eight Eleven (28%) are all planning for significant hiring increases this year. Just over 40 percent of employers are reporting planned increases for 2018. The full results of the Top Entry Level Employers survey are available online at CollegeGrad. com/topemployers. The stock market started off 2018 with strong gains, an early indicator of potential economic growth, but hiring does not yet reflect this bullish trend. One reason is that many employers finalize hiring projections by fall of the previous year, although some are revising estimates

from their original plans. Professional services firm BDO USA increased its estimate to 1000 from an initial projection of 800. 2017 was a banner hiring year at the entry level and, if the economy continues to grow, 2018 could turn out to be as good or better. “Our hiring remains strong as we expand our search for different areas of expertise,” says Blane Ruschak, Executive Director of University Relations and Campus Recruiting for KPMG. “In addition to accounting, engineering, computer science and data analytics are becoming critical to meet the demands of our clients’ evolving business needs.” The audit, tax and advisory firm plans 3,000 entry level hires for 2018. College seniors still face

stiff competition, especially as employers wait to see if the current economic growth is part of a larger trend before investing in additional talent. Launching the job search while still in school is critical since most entry level hires are made before graduation. Many positions for the class of 2018 have already been filled. Brian Krueger, Founder and CEO of CollegeGrad.com stated, “Even though there are entry level jobs available in most sectors, college seniors need to take the time necessary to find the right job to meet their personal needs.” Krueger added, “Finding the right entry level job will launch your career trajectory for years to come. It’s vitally important to get it right from the start.” Source: PRNewswire

Maryland Leads the Nation in Response to Sexual Assault By Desert Star Staff ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Thanks to the Maryland General Assembly’s rapid response and passage of several laws to help victims of sexual assault, some victim advocates say the state is leading the country in its handling of sexual harassment and assault cases. Last year, several laws took effect, including a provision known as “no means no,” saying that evidence of physical resistance is

www.desertstarweekly.com

not required to prove that a sexual crime has taken place. The Maryland General Assembly now has formed a commission to examine workplace polices on sexual harassment in all three branches of state government. Lisae Jordan, executive director and counsel with the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault, has been named a member of the assembly. “The Maryland General Assembly is ahead of

the country in terms of responding to issues of sexual assault,” Jordan said. “They made policy changes after the Billy Bush Trump tape and have continued to update their policies. “ The General Assembly’s Workplace Harassment Commission consists of 11 other women and two men. The panel will review state policies and solicit input from business leaders, the public and policy experts and make recommendations to the January 31, 2018

Legislative Policy Committee. Jordan said it’s important to have updated policies and procedures in place to reduce incidences of sexual harassment. “This is another step in making sure that the environment at the General Assembly and throughout the state of Maryland, including state government and the judiciary, is free of sexual harassment,” she said; “and, when sexual harassment occurs, that survivors

have a place to go that is independent and effective.” The General Assembly’s Workplace Harassment Commission is chaired by Jeanne Hitchcock, who held two cabinet positions in former Gov. Martin O’Malley’s administration and senior posts in state and local government and the private sector. The state’s latest sexual-harassment policy and procedures is available at the Maryland Department of Budget Management website.

NC Jury Rejects Death Penalty, Opts for Life in Prison

By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N.C. – For the ninth time in a row, a Wake County jury chose life in prison without the possibility of parole over the death penalty in a trial this week. The county has not seen a death sentence since 2007, but it has more capital trials than any other county in the state. Robert Dunham, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, says Wake County’s pattern is following a state and national trend of jurors and prosecutors opting to punish those convicted with their time instead of their life. “That’s what we’re seeing nationwide as well,” says Dunham. “More and more across the country, juries are returning life verdicts in situations in which they might have returned death sentences

twenty years ago. And in fact, in the last two years, we’ve had the fewest number of new death sentences imposed in this country.” According to a Gallup poll, support nationally for the death penalty fell to its lowest point in 25 years in 2017. The defendant in this week’s trial in Wake County – Donovan Richardson – received two life sentences. He was one of three people involved with the 2014 murders of Arthur Brown and David McCoy during a robbery. Beyond a lack of support, according to North Carolina’s Indigent Defense Services, a death penalty case costs fourand-a-half times more than a first-degree murder case. Dunham explains, “The cost of the death penalty is not just the instances in which

This week, a Wake County jury again opted for life in prison instead of the death penalty, making it the ninth time such a decision has been reached in recent years. (Sarah Hina/Flickr) the death penalty is carried out. It’s all the cases in which it’s imposed but overturned

and all the cases in which it’s have been ten capital trials sought but not imposed.” and one death sentence in all In the last three years, there 100 North Carolina counties.

US political breakdown hits Grammys, courtesy of Clinton ‘Fire & Fury’ sketch By Desert Star Staff As US media and Hollywood continue to be obsessed with President Donald Trump, it came as no surprise that this year’s Grammy awards ended up hijacked by politics, even as their ratings hit a new low. Increasingly, it seems, there is no escape from the full-blown politicization of American life. From NFL football games, to university campuses to the Golden Globes, everywhere Americans cast their weary gaze they are confronted with polarizing political messages. Not even the music industry awards could provide temporary solace from this relentless atmosphere of divisiveness. In an apparent cheap attempt to tap into that geyser of partisan rage lying just below the boiling surface of the US political landscape, somebody at the Grammys decided to have a celebrity reading interlude of Michael Wolff’s ‘Fire and Fury,’ a massively controversial book about the Trump administration. Late-night host James Corden, yet another British personality wading sloppily into the swamp of US politics, hosted a mock reading of the book by famous celebrities, which included Cher, Snoop Dogg, Cardi B and John Legend – none of whom, it should be noted, would ever toss Trump a lifeline if he needed one. But the big moment of the night was when it was Hillary Clinton’s turn to read a section from the book, which she devoted to Trump’s reportedly occasional visit to McDonald’s. “He had a long-time fear of being poisoned. One reason why he liked to eat at McDonald’s,” Clinton read

14

DesertSTAR

to hoots and hollers from the crowd. “Nobody knew he was coming and the food was safe and pre-made.” That was a new low – in terms or ratings, anyway, as Deadline reported a 20 percent decline from last year to “what looks to be an alltime low for the ceremony.” In fact, this was probably the first time many Americans would actually side with the US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, who chimed in via Twitter: “I have always loved the Grammys but to have artists read the Fire and Fury book killed it. Don’t ruin great music with trash. Some of us love music without the politics thrown in it.” Perhaps there is a future for Haley as an entertainment columnist as opposed to the face of the United States on the world stage? Not to be outdone by Haley, Donald Trump Jr. let loose with this tweet: “Getting to read a #fakenews book excerpt at the Grammys seems like a great consolation prize for losing the presidency.” In the notorious CNN interview where the host cut him off, White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller said the book can be “best understood as a work of very poorly written fiction,” and called Wolff “a garbage author of a garbage book.” Clinton’s critics from both left and right also had some thoughts about the former presidential candidate’s cameo. It is hard to fathom that the next US elections for the presidency is still three years away. Will the increasingly polarized United States of America survive until then?

Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. Facebook to prioritize local news over ‘divisive’ issues

By Desert Star Staff Facebook will prioritize local news sources in people’s news feeds in an

effort to avoid “divisive” media and promote civic engagement, according to Mark Zuckerberg.

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – New York state on Monday released the first-in-the-nation Offshore Wind Master Plan. The plan starts the process of procuring at least 800 megawatts of offshore wind power over the next two years. The goal is to increase that to 2.4 gigawatts by 2030. With only one, small wind farm currently operating off Block Island, the U.S. is far behind some other nations in developing offshore wind. According to Joe Martens, director of the New York Offshore Wind Alliance, the master plan is an important step toward getting that industry off the ground in New York and the nation as a whole. “It is an industry that is waiting to be built and New York has spent the last two years putting together a roadmap that

explores every facet of the industry,” he explains. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) estimates that in 10 years, offshore wind will be a $6 billion industry, employing 5,000 people. New York’s Clean Energy Standard calls for getting half of the state’s electric power from renewable sources within the next 12 years. Offshore wind will be about one-third of that power, so Martens says achieving the master plan’s procurement goals is critical. “If those are actually realized by the 2030 date then New York stands an excellent chance of meeting the 50 percent renewable-energy goal by 2030,” he says. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is committing $15 million to train a clean-energy workforce and develop the port infrastructure necessary for

“Starting today, we’re going to show more stories from news sources in your local town or city,” Zuckerberg

wrote in a Facebook post on Monday. “If you follow a local publisher or if someone shares a local story, it may show up higher in [your] news feed.” The algorithm change will be tested first in the United States and then implemented in other countries later this year. According to the Facebook CEO, prioritizing local news will help promote civic engagement and create constructive dialogue on issues less divisive than those usually discussed in national or international media. “Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives,” Zuckerberg wrote. “Research suggests that reading local news is directly correlated with civic engagement. People who

know what’s happening around them are more likely to get involved and help make a difference.” The news feed tweak is the latest update announced by Facebook as it aims to prioritize “trustworthy” sources and promote more content from friends and family. Zuckerberg said that the new changes were inspired by the conversations and interactions he had while traveling around the United States last year. “Many people told me they thought that if we could turn down the temperature on the more divisive issues and instead focus on concrete local issues, then we’d all make more progress together,” wrote the Facebook chief.

foundation of research for launching an industry that Martens believes is critical to the country’s energy future. “New York has really

leapt to the forefront by being so comprehensive in its approach here so time will tell, but I think this was a really excellent first step,” he adds.

Inslee Rejects Largest Oil Terminal Proposal

Gov. Jay Inslee has rejected an oil terminal that would have sent 360,000 barrels of oil a day through the Columbia River Gorge. (Kat Holmes/Washington Environmental Council) By Desert Star Staff VANCOUVER, Wash. – Gov. Jay Inslee has delivered the final blow in the long battle over a proposed oil terminal in Vancouver. On Monday, Inslee agreed with the recommendation of the Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (EFSEC), which voted unanimously at the end of last year to reject the project. If built, it would

have been the largest oil-byrail terminal on the continent. In his rejection letter, the governor said there were “potentially catastrophic risks to the public” in the event of an earthquake, and concerns about possible oil spills in the Columbia River. He also noted the risk of a potential fire or explosion at the facility. “I am so pleased that Gov. Inslee rejected this,” said

Rebecca Ponzio, campaign director for the Stand Up to Oil Coalition, “and that we do not have to unnecessarily put our emergency responders, our community members and so many other people at risk.” Northwest groups party to the decision – including Columbia Riverkeeper, Friends of the Columbia Gorgeand Fruit Valley Neighborhood Association – cheered

Inslee’s announcement. The Spokane City Council is also praising the decision, because the project would have resulted in as many as five more oil trains a day passing through that city. Vancouver Energy has 30 days to appeal the decision to Thurston County Superior Court. Ponzio notes this is just the latest oil terminal project to be rejected, and that the long battle against the Vancouver Energy project is evidence that people in the Northwest don’t have an appetite for more oil. “We have now stopped eight out of the eight terminals that have been proposed in the Pacific Northwest,” she added. “So, in that sense, there’s no need for new oil infrastructure in our regions. People want to move off of oil and toward clean energy.” The proposal would have sent 360,000 barrels of oil by rail a day through the Columbia River Gorge. Earlier this month, the Port of Vancouver’s Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to end Vancouver Energy’s lease for the project if it didn’t have the necessary permits and licenses by March 31.

Women Staging Alternative to Trump’s State of the Union

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – While President Donald Trump addresses Congress tonight, women will be holding their own State of the Union. Groups representing sexual-assault survivors, mothers, communities of color and many more are gathering at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., for the “State of Our Union” – to address gender inequality and offer an alternate vision of the future. Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, executive director of the Washington-state-based group Moms Rising, will speak at the event. She said women from all walks of life will be speaking and attending. “What we love about it is that this event is as diverse as our nation is right now,” said Rowe-Finkbeiner. “It carries the strength of the generations who have come before us, those who raised us; and it is fueled by the hope of those who will come after us.” Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., who is boycotting Trump’s State of the Union, will also speak. Event hosts include the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the National Farmworker Women’s Alliance, as well as the founder of the #MeToo movement, Tarana Burke. It will be livestreamed at thestateofourunion.org at 5 p.m. Pacific time. Rowe-Finkbeiner is
