28th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival begins By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic From small acorns large Oak trees grow and grow. In 1989, then celebrity Mayor Sonny Bono, decided that what his desert paradise city needed was a little more glitz, klieg-lights, and glamor. So he and a group of his show business pals put together
a business plan, recruited a sponsor like Nortel to help pay the bills and the first Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) was born. Twenty Eight years later PSIFF has not only grown in prestige, star-studded celebrity attendees and award-winning films from around the world, it’s become the third largest
By Tyler Harrison PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -A beautiful and brand new bundle of joy. AnnMarie Rose Valdez was born on New Year’s morning at 6:20 making her the Coachella Valley’s first baby of 2017. “I actually had a couple of patients deliver last night around 11PM and I went home thinking it won’t be us,” said Dr. Lara Hasan, MD. “I came back in around 6 AM for an update and they said there has been no New Year’s baby yet here or at the hospital across town.” Baby New Years was born at Desert Regional Medical Center; the hospital maintains bragging rights in the friendly rivalry.
“I guess we owed it to the nurses,” said Ernesto Valdez, baby AnnMarie’s father. “They were trying to pull for it the whole time and they were being good with us. Its good we were able to claim the winner.” But this may come as little surprise- as baby AnnMarie has relatives on both sides of the family with New Year’s birthdays. “I think there is always a sense of hope that happens at the beginning of a new year. I think birth in itself is always hope and renewal so I think its really nice when the two coincide. It is really a beautiful thing to be a part of,” said Hasan. Source: KMIR

This year’s festival launched last Monday, January 2, with a spectacular Awards Gala celebration and dinner for some 2400 guests and celebrity attendees at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Harold Matzner, Chairman of
the Festival Board, stated that “there are more than a dozen major stars – including Casey Affleck, Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman , Annette Bening, Mahershala Ali, and Amy Adams, plus Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, and Kevin Costner from the cast of “Hidden

Benjamin Millepied and Natalie Portman. Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price The Palm Springs International Film Festival put the spotlight on Natalie Portman as the recipient of the coveted Desert Palm Achievement Award for bringing “complex characters to the screen for years.” Her Oscar-winning role in the 2010
Darren Aronofsky film, Black Swan was just one of the milestones in her career. Tom Hanks, himself honored with The Icon award, described Portman’s talent, declaring, “we should know more about her than we do” followed by her “unknowable mystery, although she is one of the
most well-known women throughout the world.” In her selected filmography starting with Drop-Dead Gorgeous (1999) her career is diverse from Star Wars: Episode 1-The Phantom Menace to the recently released film, Jackie. She is on the cover of the January edition of Palm Springs Life magazine, the writer commenting on Ms. Portman’s performance of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy “hiding as a character even more famous, and private, than herself.” On the red carpet at the Palm Springs
Convention Center, she was stunning in a simple, yet glamorous black grown, while pregnant with her second child. She is married to Benjamin Millepied, who co-starred with her the film, Black Swan (2010). Tom Hanks did double duty as her presenter preceding his being honored with the Icon Award for the film Sully. During her acceptance speech, Portman commented on her background, having been born in Jerusalem in 1981 to an American mother and Israeli father. She spoke of her
grandmother who emigrated to Palestine in the 1930s reflecting when life was so difficult she had to share a dress with her sister. The critically acclaimed roles Ms Portman has undertaken have resulted in her 2011 Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Special Needs Planning requires Special Knowledge by Advisors
By Janice Gough A friend’s son, David, was just 1 year old when his doctor delivered a dire prognosis: David was permanently disabled, unlikely to ever walk or talk. Suggesting that it might be best for the family to put him in an institution, the doctor said there was no point in trying to send him to school. As it turns out, David was later diagnosed with a type of autism called Asperger’s syndrome. Now in his mid-40s, he walks, talks, and has a part-time job and a generally happy life…all as a result of Special Need Planning. David has changed

many lives. Watching the economic challenges that his parents went through, also, gave me the desire to help others navigate the complex Social service and Medicaid systems. Financial planning for families with disabled children requires specialized help. It surprised me to learn how many planners claim to be comprehensive, but have no background in disabilities. Roughly 10% of the population has an intellectual disability that makes it impossible for the person to manage their own financial or health affairs. A critical difference between standard planning and special-needs planning has to do with tapping government benefits. With a traditional financial planning practice, clients typically expect to pay for all their needs with their own savings and investments. That’s simply not possible when you have a specialneeds child. Not only is the cost of health care, education, therapy and other needed support services prohibitively expensive — some services simply are not available outside of government programs. Government benefits are pivotal. Even if you have millions of dollars and can pay for all sorts of things, there are a number of programs that you simply don’t have access to unless you qualify for Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income. Moreover, the practical reality of dealing with a severely disabled child often
leaves parents short on resources. In many instances, one or both parents end up sacrificing their own career goals in order to manage the child’s myriad needs. They must shuttle the child to doctors’ appointments and therapy, along with managing schedules and special diets. It can be really overwhelming. Special-needs clients work through several stages during the planning process. The first step is to jot down an emergency plan that describes who the child is; what he or she needs; and who should be involved if something were to happen to the parents. By adding to the plan as the patient’s needs change, you must consider the child’s abilities, longterm goals and wishes. This becomes a comprehensive guide that travels with the disabled child, speaking for him or her in instances where the child is unable to be personally articulate. Through the years there are three stages of planning necessary to raise a severely disabled child: 1.) Early Education 2). Occupational training and 3.) Adult life, and Retirement planning for both parents and child. Each stage has its challenges and tricks. In the early years, for example, families should know that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act guarantees an “appropriate public education” on the government’s dime to every child. If your local
public school doesn’t have the facilities or resources to deal with your child’s disability, it is compelled to pay for what the child needs, even if another institution provides it. It is up to the parents, however, to notify the school district when a child needs more help than an ordinary classroom can provide. Once notified, a process is set in motion to identify the child’s needs and the assistance necessary to deliver the promised education. The challenge here is that schools are cost constrained, but can’t legally deny services that a child needs because it’s too expensive. So, in some
cases, they’ll contend that a child needs less than what the parents believe is necessary. If the parents are convinced that what the district is providing is far less than what their child deserves, I suggest that the family hire an attorney who specializes in protecting a child’s educational rights.

Girl Scouts of the USA Celebrates 100 Years
By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, Jan. 3, 2017 -Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) announced today the start of the 2017 cookie season, which marks the 100th year of the first known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts. A century ago, girls started participating in what would evolve into the largest entrepreneurial training program for girls in the world: the Girl Scout Cookie Program®. Through the program, girls learn the essential skills they need to become effective leaders, manage finances, gain selfsufficiency, and develop confidence in handling money. To commemorate this banner year for the organization and celebrate how the cookie program powers amazing experiences for Girl Scouts year-round, the highly anticipated Girl Scout S’mores™ cookies are now available, joining classics like Thin Mints® and Trefoils®/Shortbread. The sale of cookies by Girl Scouts had humble beginnings, born as a way for troops to finance activities. The first known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts occurred in 1917, when the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked cookies and sold them in their high school cafeteria as a service project. As the Girl Scout Cookie Program developed and evolved, it not only became a vehicle for teaching five essential skills—goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—but it also enabled collaboration and integration, as early as the 1950s, among girls and troops of diverse backgrounds as they worked together toward common goals. Today, nearly 1 million Girl Scouts participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, generating nearly $800 million in cookie sales during the average season. All of the net revenue raised through the Girl Scout Cookie Program—100 percent of it— stays with the local council and troops. With over 50 million households

purchasing cookies every season, the irresistible treats can be found nationwide and will hold a beloved place in Americana for years to come, continuing to help girls take the lead and, ultimately, change the world. “I am so thrilled that, as an organization, we’ve reached such an important milestone—celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouts selling cookies,” said Sylvia Acevedo, interim CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. “The Girl Scout Cookie Program has long been the engine that powers Girl Scouts on every level. Cookie earnings fund local council programming for girls and allow girls to do incredible things of their own choosing— from civic-engagement projects to educational travel opportunities, and beyond. Each box of delicious Girl Scout Cookies® —and the entrepreneurial skills gained by participating in the Girl Scout Cookie program—helps girls fulfill their dreams, follow their passions, take the lead in their lives and communities, and change the world.” Girl Scout Cookies not only help Girl Scouts earn money for fun, educational activities and community projects, but also play a huge role in guiding girls to discover their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risktaker, Leader)™ as they learn essential life skills that will stay with them forever. Starting from the momentous, first known sale, Girl Scout Cookies have gone on to become an indelible part of American pop culture and history—and have enjoyed support from some equally iconic figures and notables. Babe Ruth promoted the Million Cookie Drive during the 1924 World Series. Former First Lady Lou Henry Hoover inspired the first organized national sale of Girl Scout Cookies in 1933 as a way to cope with the effects of the Great Depression. And when the popularity of Girl Scout Cookies soared higher than expected in 1936, commercial cookie bakers were called in to assist in making the
sweet treats. Last year, the audience at the 88th Academy Awards ceremony was eating out of Girl Scouts’ hands, with film stars clamoring to buy and munch on cookies during the telecast. Not even cataclysmic world events have dimmed the popularity of Girl Scout Cookies or the resolve of tenacious and resourceful girls. During World War II, there was a global shortage of cooking ingredients like eggs, milk, and sugar—and Girl Scouts, too, were faced with imposed war rationing. Girl Scouts sold calendars with images of them engaged in wartime service activities instead of cookies, and supported the war effort through humanitarian actions like running farm-aid projects, planting victory gardens, and sponsoring defense institutes that taught women’s survival skills and techniques for comforting children during air raids. When postwar prosperity flourished across the country, Girl Scouts employed clever new sales tactics to their advantage. By going door-to-door and setting up booths in shopping malls, the girls were able to reach customers in innovative ways, as well as sell a brand new cookie— the now iconic Thin Mints, which first were produced in 1939 as “Cooky-Mints.” As the organization entered the latter half of the 20th century, Girl Scout Cookies continued to power once-in-a-lifetime experiences for girls. Whether they used their cookie earnings to attend the Apollo 12 launch at Cape Kennedy, Florida, or to microfinance their big ideas to get to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, cookie earnings have transported as well as transformed girls. With the emergence of the Internet and rise of ecommerce, girls were eager to harness the power of technology to expand their communication channels. In December 2014, Girl Scouts responded by launching a scalable electronic addition called the Digital Cookie™ January 4, 2017
platform. The new online expansion of the Girl Scout Cookie Program provided a platform for girls to market and sell cookies to customers online and via mobile devices. Digital Cookie made its official debut at the annual 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES)—where Girl Scouts was one of the first youthserving organizations to present and one of, if not the first, to provide a booth run entirely by girls. Girl Scouts is thrilled to announce that Dell and Visa Checkout will continue their support of the platform, which continues to grow across the nation.
The celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouts selling cookies will kick into high gear during National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend 2017. From February 24 to 26, Girl Scout councils around the country will be hosting events and cookie booths for cookie enthusiasts to get their hands on the iconic treats and join in the fun. To find cookie varieties available locally or learn more about the history of Girl Scout cookies and the Girl Scout Cookie Program, visit www.girlscoutcookies. org. Supervisor Benoit’s Funeral Scheduled for Jan. 10 in La Quinta
By Desert Star Staff LA QUINTA – A funeral Mass for Supervisor John J. Benoit will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in La Quinta. A reception at St. Francis will immediately follow the funeral. A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 47-225 Washington St., La Quinta. Public viewing will be available from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. Benoit, whose public service spanned a lifetime and helped shape issues statewide, passed away Monday evening at his Bermuda Dunes home. He had been battling pancreatic cancer. Benoit, 64, spent decades serving as a member of the California Highway Patrol, a school board member, state lawmaker
and county supervisor. Benoit’s fellow supervisor, Vice Chairman John Tavaglione, has canceled the Riverside County Board of Supervisors’ Jan. 10 meeting to accommodate the funeral. “We are devastated by this loss,” Tavaglione said. “John was dedicated to the Coachella Valley and to the residents he served. For him, problems and challenges were simply opportunities to work with people on all sides and develop real solutions. I will miss him terribly as a friend and colleague, but his loss to the community is incalculable.” “We are all saddened by the passing of our brother, Chairman John Benoit,” said Supervisor Marion Ashley. “His legacy of achievement and care for the County of Riverside and the Fourth District are well-known, and his many accomplishments are lasting. Our hearts go out
to his family, staff and friends.” Benoit represented the Inland Empire and the Coachella and Palo Verde valleys during a period of tremendous growth. His legacy is visible throughout the community, from establishing the CHP’s permanent air operations unit in the Coachella Valley, to his role in developing the University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine and Eagle Canyon Dam. Benoit’s 45 years of public service helped strengthen the local economy, protect neighborhoods from crime, improve transportation systems and expand access to health care in eastern Riverside County. In honor of Supervisor Benoit, the American flag, the state flag and the POW/MIA flag will be flown at half-staff at all county-owned and leased facilities until January 10.
In lieu of flowers, the Benoit family is requesting that donations be made

Alarming Survey Shows People’s Poor Home Maintenance Habits
By Desert Star Staff Proper home maintenance can preserve your home, while saving you money and headaches in the future. However, a new survey from Erie Insurance conducted by Harris Poll reveals Americans have alarmingly poor upkeep habits. “By overlooking common DIY projects, homeowners are not only putting themselves at risk for major financial loss, but also are exposing their families to dangerous hazards,” says Joe Vahey, vice president and product manager at Erie Insurance. In an effort to help people become more aware of what they can be doing to protect themselves, the experts at Erie Insurance list five commonly overlooked areas of the home that should be regularly inspected and maintained: Inspect Your Roof: Replacing or repairing a roof is one of the biggest expenses a homeowner may have and the need to do it often comes without warning. Nationally, the average homeowner spends about $6,600 to install a new roof, according to HomeAdvisor, but prices can soar upwards of $20,000 depending on certain factors.
But the Erie Insurance survey found that nearly one in four homeowners (23 percent) admits they never inspect their roof or have it inspected only if there is a problem. Even scarier, nearly a third (27 percent) of those who own a house either mistakenly believe their insurance will pay for damage that occurs to their roof over time, such as through normal wear and tear or have no idea how their insurance works regarding this type of damage. Insurance generally only covers things like roof damage from unexpected storms. Unclog Gutters and Downspouts: Nearly one out of four homeowners (24 percent) say they never care for their gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters can cause water to flow down the sides of a home and pool around its foundation, often leading to major issues like uneven floors, cracks in walls and interior water damage. This type of claim, also known as seepage, is often not covered under your home insurance policy. Clean Out Dryer Exhaust: One in five homeowners (21 percent) admit they never clean their clothes dryer
Protect your family from the unthinkable with simple home maintenance projects. ducts, unless they have a problem. Unfortunately, the most common cause of dryer fires is failure to do a thorough cleaning. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), dryers cause roughly 15,500 home structure fires, 29 deaths, 400 injuries and $192 million in direct property loss each year. Check the Furnace: Only 36 percent of homeowners have their furnaces inspected and serviced at least once a year. According to NFPA,
U.S. fire departments respond to an estimated average of 56,000 home fires involving heating equipment. These fires resulted in annual losses of 470 civilian deaths, 1,490 civilian injuries, and $1 billion in direct property damage per year. Clean Sump Pump and Pit: Sump pumps are used to remove excess water from homes, but 44 percent of those who own one admit to never cleaning it or the pit, unless they have a problem.
Water damage due to sewage and drain backups generally requires additional insurance coverage beyond a standard policy. Without that coverage, it could end up costing you, on average, $2,156, according to Home Advisor. Protect your family and your investment with proper maintenance, and if you’re unsure what your policy covers, contact your insurance agent. They’ll work with you to determine what you need to be protected. StatePoint
5 Health and Wellness Rules to Live by this School Year and Beyond By Desert Star Staff At school, kids are exposed to an influx of germs that can cause a number of preventable sicknesses, including cold and flu. The top germiest schoolbased culprits include water fountains, plastic reusable cafeteria trays, keyboards, toilets and…students’ hands. To keep your family free from the sniffles all year long, here are five easy-to-follow
tips to ensure a healthy, happy and absent-free school year. 1. Teach Kids to Wash Hands the Right Way: It seems simple enough, but research shows that only 5 percent of people wash their hands properly. The CDC recommends following five simple steps: wet, lather, scrub (for at least 20 seconds), rinse and dry. Don’t forget backs of hands, between fingers and
under the nails. Handwashing is the best defense against germs, but if soap and water aren’t available, hand sanitizer is a good alternative. 2. Sanitize School Supplies: Sanitize school supplies, lunch boxes, bottoms of backpacks, etc., weekly. These items are exposed to a variety of germs lurking in places like gym lockers, on desks and in bathrooms. Use disinfecting wipes on plastic objects, and throw items like lunch boxes and backpacks in the washing machine. Send kids to school with disposable wipes so they can clean surfaces like desks, cafeteria trays and other surfaces throughout the day. 3. Set a Sleep Schedule: A regular bedtime and an alert morning go hand-inhand. The National Sleep Foundation recommends a calming nighttime routine like reading a book or taking a bath to signal the brain that it’s
bedtime, and leave technology like tablets, laptops and cell phones out of the bedroom. If you’re wondering how much sleep your child needs each night, it’s recommended that toddlers receive 11 to 14 hours, preschoolers 10 to 13 hours, school-aged children nine to 11 hours, and teenagers eight to 10 hours. 4. Keep Healthy Snacks and Meals on Hand: A healthy, balanced diet has been proven to keep kids mentally sharp and focused, but fastpaced schedules during the school year can sometimes result in quick-fix, and often unhealthy, food choices. Keep nutritious grab-and-go snacks like trail mix and fruit at the ready. And don’t skip breakfast. It can mean decreased cognitive performance in areas like alertness, attention, memory and problem solving. 5. Nurse Kids Back to Health: Germs are lurking everywhere -- school,
preschool and daycare, so be prepared if sickness does strike. Tools like TempTraq come in handy for unexpected fevers, giving parents peace of mind and children the rest they need to get better. This wearable, Bluetooth temperature monitor continuously senses, records and transmits body temperature for up to 24-hours. It can even send alerts to your smartphone via its free mobile app to notify you immediately if your child’s fever reaches an unsafe level. Visit Target or CVS to stock your medicine cabinet with this useful must-have, or order online at TempTraq.com. Drivers’ Handheld Cell Use Now Illegal By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – There’s a new reality for morning commuters, no more multitasking behind the wheel when you’re stuck in one of California’s legendary traffic jams. As of this week, it’s now the law that if you use your phone while driving, you may be looking at a $160 fine That means no texting, no calls, and no social media updates when you’re behind the wheel. Chris Cochran, assistant director of marketing and public affairs for California’s Office of Traffic Safety, said this initiative is aimed at keeping drivers’ hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, rather than on their smartphones. “It pretty much outlaws anything that would require you to hold the cell phone or other device in your hand, or has you typing away at it with your fingers, or that type of thing,” he explained. For drivers who bristle at this inconvenience, Cochran pointed out that phones mounted on the dashboard are still allowed.

Here’s a sight you probably won’t be seeing much anymore on California roadways. Handheld phone use while driving is now illegal in the state. (Kaboompics) According to the DMV and San Francisco-based Assemblyman Bill Quirk, who authored the new law, there were 12 fatal collisions in California last year involving handheld cellphone use, more than 500 injuries, and nearly 700 property-damage collisions. Cochran said eight out of ten accidents involve
inattentive driving, and talking or texting on a mobile phone are the top sources of driver distractions. And while it takes some discipline in this hyper-connected world to not pick up that incoming call, he said very often, those “urgent” messages can wait. “Most everything that is coming over those smartphones is not something
that has to be reacted to while you’re driving, or this minute, or even in the next five or ten minutes,” he said. He said the window for avoiding an accident could be as small as two seconds; and nationwide, 3,000 people die a year from driver-related distractions.
Tips to Curb Muscle Loss as You Age
By Desert Star Staff As the population of Americans over age 55 soars toward 70 million over the next decade, more Americans are searching beyond avoiding wrinkles and fine lines for tips, foods and products that will help them live the lives they desire well into their advanced years -- and this includes muscle maintenance. As people age past 30, they can lose up to eight percent of their muscle mass each decade. Finding a way to maintain muscle through the years has been one of the more elusive parts of the healthy aging quest. “Muscle loss can really take its toll. Even simple movements like opening a jar of pickles or gardening, become more difficult,” said medical director of NYU Langone’s Preston Robert Tisch Center for Men’s Health, Dr. Steven Lamm. “When you have less muscle mass, the muscles you have must work harder. It can be exhausting.” Per Dr. Lamm, there are a few easy steps that can keep your muscles healthy as you age -- and new research shows there may even finally be a way to curb muscle loss associated with aging. Be Active: One of the most effective ways to keep muscles in tip-top shape is to be active. Even quick exercises done regularly can make a huge difference in your muscle health. “Try the long route when you’re www.desertstarweekly.com

taking the dog for a walk or take the stairs instead of the escalator. Staying active can also maintain joint health,” said Dr. Lamm. Feed Your Muscles: Most people know that protein is a building block for muscle, yet don’t get enough of it. Sleep also feeds muscle growth and recovery. “I tell my patients to aim for a regular sleep schedule of eight or nine hours each night to promote optimal muscle mass, heart health and brain health,” said Dr. Lamm. Try a Supplement: You cannot halt aging, but new research shows you may be able to curb the muscle loss that comes with getting older. A new clinical study showed that daily supplementation with the super antioxidant, Pycnogenol (picnoj-en-all), improved muscle function and endurance and reduced some of the symptoms accompanying muscle loss. “I’ve recommended Pycnogenol to my patients for years as a natural extract for healthy aging, and as an important building block of wellness. This research builds on those findings,” says Dr. Lamm. Pycnogenol is one of the most
researched ingredients on the market, and decades of research demonstrate the benefits of this natural extract for cognitive support, joint health, and skin health that all contribute to an overall healthier self as we age. It’s available in more than 700 dietary supplements,
multi-vitamins and health products worldwide. For more information, visit pycnogenol.com. Muscle maintenance is a key to healthy aging. Luckily, there are many steps you can take to prevent muscle loss and stay strong through the years. StatePoint

Don’t neglect the future. It’s never too early to save for retirement. In fact, the sooner you start, the better off you will be. Invest through a company-sponsored plan if possible. If not, look into IRAs that can help you grow your wealth exponentially. Create Categorized Funds: Consider the 52-week savings challenge. In the first week, save $1, followed by $2

‘Amelie’ A Whimsical New Musical at Ahmanson and DVD Updates
The company of “Amélie, A New Musical” at Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre. “Amélie, A New Musical” plays through January 15, 2017. Photo by Joan Marcus It’s not often that Angelenos get to see a new musical production before it opens on Broadway so enjoy the opportunity to experience the winsome, imaginative “Amelie” at the Ahmanson before it opens on Broadway in March 2017. Other musicals, prior to “Amelie,” that moved from the Ahmanson to Broadway are “Curtains,” “9 to 5: The Musical” and

“The Drowsy Chaperone.” “Amelie,” the musical, is a reimagining of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 2001 film “Amelie” that starred the wide-eyed Audrey Tautou as a young girl who led a very sheltered and lonely life before moving to Paris. In the film, much of what Amelie is thinking and feeling is conveyed by closeups and facial expressions; on stage, her emotions are expressed in song.
The new stage musical, written by Craig Lucas (Book), Daniel Messe (Music) and Nathan Tysen, who co-wrote the lyrics with Messe, is directed by Pam MacKinnon. As the show opens there is a large picture frame through which the future characters in Amalie’s life walk out on stage. As she grows older, they will all play a part in her story and she in theirs, Young Amalie (ten-yearold Savvy Crawford) is an inquisitive little girl who leads a very quiet, sheltered life. Her father, a physician (Manoel Felciano), decides that Amelie should be home-schooled for health reasons so her only companion and friend is her pet goldfish “Fluffy.” The adult Amelie is performed by Phillipa Soo, who received a Tony nomination for playing Hamilton’s wife in the Broadway smash hit “Hamilton.” As a young adult, Amelie moves to Paris. She has an avid imagination, but does not connect with too many people other than her co-workers in a Montmartre cafe. Things change somewhat when she discovers a little treasure box under the floorboards of her apartment. Inspired by watching Princess Diana and Mother Teresa on TV, she suddenly decides to devote her life to secretly helping others. Her first saintly task is to find the little boy, now a grown man, and anonymously return the box filled with his childhood treasures. As she explores Paris in her quest to do-good deeds, she notices another free spirit, Nino (Adam ChanlerBerat) who collects discarded

pictures from the train station photo booth and places them in a book he carries. She feels a connection to him, but is too shy to ask him why he is gathering the pictures. When he accidentally leaves the book behind one day she tracks him down in the hopes of helping him secretly. But are they destined to ever meet face to face and fall in love? This could be a problem for Amelie because as a child, her mother taught her that everything is always half way out of reach. But perhaps she and Nino could each walk halfway toward one another and meet in the middle? As Amelie interacts with others, she, and we, meet all sorts of quirky characters, including a garden gnome (David Andino), who, thanks to Amelie, gets to travel around the world, this is a very clever bit. To say more would ruin the fun. Tickets for “Amelie” are available by calling (213) 972-4400, online at CenterTheatreGroup.org or by visiting the Center Theatre Group box office at the Ahmanson Theatre, located at The Music Center, 135 N. Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles. “Amalie” runs through January 15, 2017.

If you haven’t seen Tom Hanks in “Sully,” you can now own or rent it on DVD. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film is riveting and involving
as we go behind the scenes of the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger saved the lives of all 155 passengers on board his aircraft after the plane lost both engines because of bird strikes. Within seconds Sully and his copilot (Aaron Eckhart) were able to glide the disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River. Even though he was heralded for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill an all-out investigation threatens to destroy Sully’s spotless reputation and career. Bonus features include: “Sully Sullenberger: The Man Behind the Miracle,” “Moment by Moment: Averting Disaster On the Hudson” and “Neck Deep in the Hudson: Shooting Sully.” In this final segment Director Clint Eastwood and others reveal how Flight 1549’s terrifying splashdown on the Hudson river was captured on film. From Warner Bros,, rated PG-13 for some peril and brief strong language. For the younger set, check out the animated ”The Secret Life of Pets” and find out what they do all day. The DVD also includes three mini movies. Rated PG for action and some rude humor. From Disney, there is the animated “Finding Dory” and “Pete’s Dragon” featuring Robert Redford. As the old year ends, I wish you all a Happy and Entertaining New Year!

The Red Carpet was a little less formal I think this year as several actors from the same movie greeted each other with hugs. Nicole Kidman made a special effort to give her friend Amy Adams a huge hug. Natalie Portman that is with child had conversations with friends before giving interviews to the TV crews waiting. Diversity was a considerable sensation in this years PSIFF as actors from all over the world were given awards. Tom Hanks came on the Red Carpet joking with photographers and showing his huge sense of humor, big beard and all.

Vampire Lesbians of Sodom & Sleeping Beauty or Coma
By Desert Star Staff Rancho Mirage, CA - The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley’s LGBTQA+ Stage Company, will present Charles Busch’s off-Broadway smash hit comedies VAMIPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM and SLEEPING BEAUTY OR COMA, opening Friday, January 20, 2017 for a fourweek run. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2 PM, through February 12, 2017. One of the longest running plays in Off-Broadway history, VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM is the saga of two fatally seductive vampiresses whose paths first collide in ancient Sodom. Their bitter rivalry as bloodsuckers but more importantly, as actresses, endures for two thousand years with stops along the way in 1920s silent movie Hollywood and contemporary Las Vegas. The New York Times said of the show, “Nothing escapes the demolition by laughter.” Liz Smith called it “The Season’s Best Comedy.” Joining VAMPIRE
LESBIANS OF SODOM is its companion piece SLEEPING BEAUTY OR COMA, the classic fairy tale retold in London’s 1960s fabulously mod fashion world. Both pieces contain very funny adult material, and VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM contains brief nudity. Loren Freeman and Kam Sisco portray the two vampiresses, and other delightful characters. Many other roles are played by DRP Company members Jacob Betts, Richard Marlow, Terry Huber, Adina Lawson and John Fryer, along with Steven Ciceron in his Playhouse debut. Jim Strait directs and designs the production with costumes by Allan Jensen, wigs by Toni Molano, scenic painting by Walter Lab, and lighting designed by Phil Murphy. Music Can Be A Major Key To Therapeutic Healing
By Desert Star Staff Music plays a significant role in nearly everyone’s life, but for some people it represents much more than an invitation to dance or a soundtrack for the morning commute. Researchers have found that music therapy provides a diversion from negative feelings and helps manage the pain of not only adults, but of children with developmental, physical, behavioral, and neurological disabilities. It also increases range of motion and motor skills, and in some cases is a replacement for medication. In short, its therapeutic uses are many. “Music is invaluable to people with special needs, allowing them to express themselves non-verbally,” says Travis Perry, a music teacher for more than 35 years and inventor of ChordBuddy (www. chordbuddy.com), a device that makes guitar-learning easier for anyone – including those with disabilities. “Veterans can use music to help cope with PTSD as www.desertstarweekly.com
well as other physical injuries. Senior citizens can learn to play the guitar, which helps build hand strength.” One recent study showed that music therapy can even help children cope with routine immunizations, making them less stressed – and their parents less stressed as well. While music therapy is known to be fruitful for the person needing therapy, the results also can be a gratifying for the teacher. Perry says he’s found it especially satisfying to teach the guitar to autistic children, who can be challenging but ultimately rewarding pupils. In fact, a small number of people with autism are musical savants, according to the American Music Therapy Association, but all benefit from music therapy interventions to enhance their social, communicative and motor skills, among other needs. Generally, children with autism aren’t able to make what would be considered a pleasing sound on the guitar
without some assistance. Perry uses his invention to help them. Instead of positioning their hand into the correct chord positions – often tricky for even ablebodied learners – they can just press a tab that results in a clear, strong chord sound. Perry, who has appeared on the popular TV show Shark Tank, didn’t actually have music therapy or people with special needs in mind when he invented ChordBuddy. He was trying to help his daughter learn to play and her frustration became his inspiration. “When learning an instrument, it’s important to have success right away, and that can be difficult to do with the guitar,” Perry says. “Most people give up within the first couple of months and the guitar ends up in a January 4, 2017
closet. That’s why I’m so excited when I know I’ve
been able to help a specialneeds child, a veteran with PTSD or a senior citizen with arthritis make music. “You realize the odds they’ve had to overcome, both with the usual hurdles to learning and their personal difficulties, and that’s very fulfilling to me.” About Travis Perry: Travis Perry has been a music teacher for more than 35 years and is the inventor of ChordBuddy (www.chordbuddy.com).

By Vince Marino-KMIR PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -The Palm Springs International Film Festival is expected to draw major Hollywood stars like Tom Hanks, Annette Bening and Nicole Kidman but the festival will also draw plenty of movie fans and that is good news for local businesses. “During the film festival we get a lot of added business, there’s a lot of foot traffic, people from all over the world. So we actually get the pleasure of having all kinds of guest come in and enjoy dinner here at Lulu,” said Emily Morison, event coordinator at Lulu California Bistro. The hospitality industry is expecting to see a
considerable economic boost from the film festival. Hotels in the Palm Springs area are seeing an uptick in reservations. Since the event lasts for two weeks, rooms are being booked both on the weekend and during the week. “Huge impact. Not only the room nights it generates but this event generates tons of national and international publicity,” said Hilton Palm Springs general manager Aftab Dada. Visitors come from all over the world and for many of them, this is not their first Palm Springs International Film Festival. Hotels in Palm Springs are seeing a lot of repeat
costumers and local restaurants are also reaping the benefits of the film festival. “There’s people from all over the world. There’s people that are local, a lot of the locals get involved with the volunteering and that affects our business and brings in a lot of people,” said Morison. “It has a wonderful impact of bringing different people into our restaurant to taste our food...international people from all over the world. And also the people involved in putting the film festival together as far as producers, directors, actors and just the film goers,” said Antonette Kelly, general manager of Las Casuelas Terraza.

Third Lawsuit Filed Against Missouri Prison System By Desert Star Staff JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The third lawsuit against the Missouri Department of Corrections in two months has been filed. The MacArthur Justice Center alleges the parole system violates the constitutional rights of young offenders. Citing a series of recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings, the suit argues that inmates who were sentenced for crimes committed as children require special consideration by the state’s Parole Board. Mae Quinn, director of the MacArthur Justice Center, said young offenders are given a one-sided, 15to 20-minute interrogation by Board members and prison staff, without any real consideration of modern brain science, adolescent development or the impact that trauma has had on them. “We also argue that the practices, not just for juveniles but for all offenders who see the parole board in Missouri,
fail to comply with Missouri law and statutes, that for too long they’ve gotten very lax in their practices, there hasn’t been a lot of check on their practices,” she explained. The lawsuit takes the state to task for prohibiting inmates from reviewing evidence against them prior to or during their hearings, and making the defendants choose between having a lawyer or a witness present. The state typically doesn’t comment on pending litigation. Quinn said the culture and climate in the prison system has allowed the legal rights of inmates to be trampled upon. “The Missouri Department of Corrections has become what is seen as a pretty dysfunctional system where those who want to speak up about problematic practices are met with retaliation,” she said. “We see that with regards to our clients, but it’s even happening with regard to staff within the facility.” Quinn said when it comes
A lawsuit has been filed against the State of Missouri, saying young prisoners shouldn’t be treated like adults. (wycokck.org) to young offenders, they must be considered as children. “They’re not miniature adults,” she added. “Processes, practices, hearings, all need to take account of this special status, this constitutional status as a
child, and that’s no different in the parole system which is deciding liberty issues for these young people whether they’ll be living their lives behind bars or not.” Another class-action suit filed in federal court
by the MacArthur Center alleges there are around 5,000 inmates in Missouri prisons with Hepatitis C, but only five are receiving adequate treatment.

National Transportation Safety Board Releases Report on Deadly Bus Crash
KMIR News Staff PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -The National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report on the Oct. 23 Palm Springs tour bus crash that killed the driver and a dozen passengers does not identify the cause, which
remains under investigation. Federal and local investigators continue to investigate safety issues and other factors that contributed to the crash, which sent the Los Angeles- bound bus through the rear of a tractor-
trailer on westbound Interstate 10, killing 13 and injuring 30. NTSB investigators concluded through their initial on-scene investigation that six of the eight bus tires were overly worn and out of compliance with federal

regulations, but the report does not identify the tires as a contributing factor to the crash. ``All aspects of the crash remain under investigation as the NTSB determines the probable cause, and continues to examine safety issues related to the crash,’’ the report states. The California Highway Patrol is also conducting its own separate investigation. The bus, owned by Alhambra-based bus company USA Holiday, was taking part in a casino tour, which embarked from Thermal’s Red Earth Casino around 4 that morning. USA Holiday’s owner and sole bus driver, 59-yearold Teodulo Elias Vides, was reportedly in the casino prior

MUSIC Catch up on stellar late 2016 returns BY ROBERT KINSLER
This column showcases several late 2016 releases worth adding to your music collection.
Artist: Jeff Healey Title: Holding On: A Heal My Soul Companion (Provogue) You might like if you enjoy: Alvin Lee, Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout Tell me more: When Jeff Healey passed away after a battle with cancer in March 2008, the 41-year-old Canadian artist left a lasting legacy as an outstanding singersongwriter and guitar virtuoso. Now, previously-unreleased recordings from Healey are showcased on “Holding On: A Heal My Soul Companion.” The release features five rare Healey studio tracks that were recorded during the same time period (1996-1998) as the recordings that were featured on his acclaimed “Heal My Soul” album (released on what would have been Healey’s 50th birthday)
as well as a concert recorded in Oslo, Norway in 1999. “Love Takes Time” is a flat-out blues rocker that explodes with heartfelt vocals and fiery guitar work; “Every Other Guy” is a more confessional song, with a melodic chorus and nuanced lead fills. Healey’s guitar prowess is showcased across the disc (particularly on the studio version of “Dancing With the Monsters”) and throughout the exhilarating concert recording. Information: JeffHealey.com.
Artist: Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions Title: Until the Hunter (Tendril Tales) You might like if you enjoy: Mazzy Star, Cowboy Junkies Tell me more: As the voice of ‘90s alt-music pioneers Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval championed a dream pop sound blending neo-psychedelia, blues, alt-
folk and Americana. The Los Angeles native went on to form the Warm Inventions in 2000 and that troupe released several albums including 2009’s “Through the Devil Softly,” and returned from a five-year hiatus late in 2016 with a fantastic new album titled “Until the Hunter” released on the group’s own independent record label Tendril Tales. Sandoval’s overall style continues to mine the quieter and more introspective reaches of alternative folk rock. The new 11-track album features a tuneful duet “Let Me Get There” featuring Kurt Vile, the rootsy “The Peasant,” the baroque folk of “The Hiking Song” and relatively buoyant “Isn’t It True.” Information: HopeSandoval.com. Artist: Enigma Title: The Fall of a Rebel Angel (Republic Records) You might like if you enjoy: Moby, Enigma
Tell me more: More than 25 years after the release of Enigma’s multi-platinum debut “MCMXC a.D.” composermusician Michael Cretu has released “The Fall of a Rebel Angel.” The first new Enigma release since 2008’s “Seven Lives Many Faces,” the new album will certainly please fans of Cretu’s previous releases, especially his 1990 debut. There is a rich mix of neoclassical, new age, worldbeat and electronica styles across the concept album, which “tells the story of a symbolic journey to redemption with everyone to define his individual path,” according to Cretu. The mix of sound effects, song, spoken word, baroque, instrumentals and new age-meets-rock impulses is enhanced by guests such as Brazillian singer-songwriter Mark Josher, Indonesian singer Anggun and English pop duo Aquilo. Information: EnigmaSpace.com.
Artist: Katie Kim Title: Salt (independent) You might like if you enjoy: Mazzy Star, Cat Power Tell me more: Katie Kim is the the pseudonym of Irish singer Katie Sullivan, whose third album “Salt” provides a thrilling and intense listen across its 9-track span. Kim uses her rich soprano in the service of ambient material that evokes haunted sonic spaces. Kim’s voice is lush and lovely on the shimmering “Day is Coming,” while low notes on a piano enthrall on “Body Break.” The distorted droning on “I Make Sparks” recalls the darkest reaches of The Cure and The Jesus and Mary Chain. “Beautiful Human” is a fragmented journey, the artist’s voice distant and alluring in the vast distance of sound. Staying Motivated to Keep Next Year’s Resolution By Desert Star Staff EUGENE, Ore. - The most popular New Year’s resolutions last year involved staying fit and losing weight, and chances are good that many people are setting the same goals again. The psychology of motivation may hold the answer to how people can keep their resolutions in 2017. Elliot Berkman, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Oregon, said it’s important to start with a goal that is less abstract and more actionable than just “staying healthy” - and to start on it as soon as possible. “What you want to do is to get those immediate reinforcements as early as you can,” he said. “So, it’s kind of classic advice and it’s good advice to start small, and to make sure to reinforce each little step.” According to a Nielsen study, 43 percent of people said they planned to lose weight at the beginning of this year by eating healthier. But more than 75 percent who
14
DesertSTAR
had that goal had not followed a healthy diet or weight-loss program the year before, so hadn’t developed the healthy habits necessary for success. Berkman said this can be the hardest problem. A person’s habitual behavior, which may not involve regular visits to the gym, is the easiest to fall back on. Following through on a New Year’s resolution means rewiring the brain for a new habit - literally. Berkman said people are better off doing something they like and connecting the habit to something bigger. “Maybe it’s connecting it to your family or your work, or earning money,” he said. “Whatever is the thing that you really care about, find the way that that new goal is connected to that, and that’s going to also serve as a reinforcement for it.” Technology also can be used to keep people motivated. At the University of Oregon’s Social and Affective Neuroscience Lab, where he works, Berkman and other researchers are using

He said abstract goals can be hard to keep in mind day to day, especially when concrete temptations exist all around. January 4, 2017
“It helps combat fire with fire, a little bit, to get those texts in your daily life,” he said. “And so, you don’t need to go out of your way to remember why you care about losing
weight or exercising more. We’re going to remind you, and we’ll do it in your own words.” The Nielsen study is online at nielsen.com. www.desertstarweekly.com

Surfin’ Dogs Rose Parade Float Wins Extraordinaire Trophy
By Desert Star Staff PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 3, 2017- American Wave Machines, Inc. (AWM), the world’s leading wave pool, surf venue, and wave technology company for the emerging out of ocean surfing market, created the wave machine for surfing dogs that won the Extraordinaire Trophy and broke two Guinness World records for the longest
and heaviest float for the 128th Annual Tournament of Roses that took place Monday Jan.2,2017. The Extraordinaire Trophy is awarded to the most spectacular float including floats that do not retract to 55’ in length. The float, sponsored by the Lucy Pet Foundation, weighed in at 148,250 lbs. and measured 126 ft. The
AWM wave machine was designed specifically for the float using its proprietary PerfectSwell® technology. Themed Lucy Pet’s Gnarly Crankin’ K-9 Wave Maker, the float carried 5,000 gallons of water and featured eight surfin’ dogs selected in a nationwide competition. “We exceeded our expectations by breaking the two Guinness World records and winning the Extraordinaire Trophy. We couldn’t be happier or prouder,” said AWM Founder and President, Bruce McFarland. “Our
contributions to this float are part of our ongoing corporate charity efforts.” Since 2000, American Wave Machines has been designing, engineering, manufacturing and developing world class surf pools, wave systems and surf parks. The company looks to nature to design patented and proprietary technology that delivers authentic surfing experiences using real surfboards. American Wave Machines has two ground-breaking technologies replicating
ocean-like waves that create ideal conditions for surfing in a safe and controlled environment, any time of the year, anywhere in the world. PerfectSwell® is the first surf pool system capable of creating an authentic surfing experience that delivers 100% real ocean dynamics found in nature. SurfStream® is the world’s first standing wave machine that delivers a deep water stationary surfing experience (on real surfboards) scalable to various spaces. Source: PR-Newswire
For a healthier year, Robinson and the experts at Embria are encouraging people to toast to these great health and wellness tips. Be Social: It’s easy to hole-up during these cold winter days, but it’s not
very good for your health or immune system. Research shows that people that have more human interactions are better at combating cold weather challenges. So make sure to chat with your coworkers during the day and make plans with your friends after work. Not only will this boost your immunity, but social activities may also help reduce stress and depression. Supplement: While a well-balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can support good health, getting the proper vitamins and nutrients in sufficient quantities every day can prove challenging. Consider resolving to offer your immune system targeted support with a supplement designed to boost healthy immune function. One of the best immune strengthening ingredients is EpiCor fermentate, which has been clinically shown to support the body’s ability to initiate the proper immune response when needed,
support rapid immune response and maintain healthy immune function. You can find EpiCor in many popular and trusted supplement brands. Rest and Relaxation: Rest and relaxation can go a long way toward supporting good health. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to a number of major health problems and can impair the way your immune system responds, according to the National Institutes of Health. What’s more, too much stress can compromise immune response. So whether it’s spending time with friends, going to yoga class or taking a bath, make sure your schedule includes time for both sleep and for stressreducing activities. Improve your health from the inside out this New Year. By focusing on boosting your immunity as a goal, you will naturally adopt healthy habits. StatePoint

WikiLeaks vows to ‘blow you away’ in 2017 ‘showdown’
By Desert Star Staff WikiLeaks has promised 2017 will be an even bigger year for leaks than 2016, which saw the whistleblowing site publish thousands of documents exposing US political secrets, covert trade deals and private communications from global leaders. “If you thought 2016 was a big WikiLeaks year, 2017 will blow you away,” WikiLeaks tweeted on Monday, giving no hints as
to what may be in store. The tweet also included a link to its website’s donation page so people can help the site “prepare for the showdown.”It proved a very busy 2016 for the whistleblowing site, as it delivered a massive trove of documents over the 12-month period. This included more than 50,000 emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair JohnPodesta and more than 27,000 emails from
the Democratic National Committee, which confirmed the DNC worked against Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, favoring Clinton.More US State Department cables were released, as well as documents which gave an insight into the US arming of Yemen. Text from the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA) was also revealed. The emails relating to
the US election rocked the Democratic establishment and delivered a blow to the Clinton campaign in the leadup to the November election. WikiLeaks also confirmed that founder Julian Assange will take part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Thursday at 14:00 GMT (9am EST). The tweet announcing the AMA contained the hashtag ‘proofoflife’, presumably referencing concerns raised by some for the WikiLeaks editor’s wellbeing.
New faces, old quarrels: A look at the 115th US Congress
Members of the House of Representatives are sworn in on the first day of the 115th Congress at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, January 3, 2017 © Jonathan Ernst / Reuters By Desert Star Staff There are 59 new faces on Capitol Hill, as members of the 115th US Congress were sworn in. Two were political heirs, while some others checked off ‘historic first’ boxes. Over the next two years, the lawmakers will back or block President Donald Trump. Republicans will have the majority in both chambers, with 52 seats in the Senate and 241 in the House. Though the Democrats picked up two Senate and seven House seats

in the November election, they remain a minority, but potentially have enough clout to block proposals by the president-elect.House: The scion also rises Among the 52 new faces in the House of Representatives were a son and a daughter of former lawmakers, who watched from the gallery. Dick Cheney once represented Wyoming in the House, before becoming defense secretary under President George H.W. Bush
and vice-president under his son George W. Bush. Cheney’s daughter Liz was sworn in on Tuesday to her father’s old seat in the House, the only one allocated to the northwestern state. Jimmy Panetta was sworn in as representative of California’s 20th district – the same seat once held by his father Leon, who went on to become White House chief of staff for Bill Clinton and served President Barack Obama as CIA director and secretary of defense. Senate: Historic firsts Seven new members joined the Senate, two Republicans and five Democrats. Conspicuously absent were former minority leader Harry Reid, California’s Barbara Boxer and Maryland’s Barbara Mikulski, all Democrats who have retired after lengthy terms in the Senate. Democrats held onto the seats, with Chris Van Hollen replacing Mikulski, while Reid and Boxer were succeeded by two historic firsts. Former California attorney general Kamala Harris is the first Indian-American woman ever to serve in the Senate, and the first black woman to represent California in the upper chamber. Harris will “continue the tradition of having a strong, progressive woman in this seat,” according to Boxer.Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada), who was elected to Reid’s old seat, is the first Latina and the first MexicanAmerican woman in the Senate. The 115th Congress has a total of 38 Hispanic members. Two of the senators had previously served in the House: Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois) and Todd Young (R-Indiana). Only one of the seats had changed hands in the November election, with New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan narrowly defeating the incumbent Republican Kelly Ayotte.A very heavy agenda One of the changes to the House rules proposed by the Republican majority involved neutering the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), set up by the Democrats in January 4, 2017
2008. As Democrats mobilized constituents to protest the proposal, the president-elect voiced his disapproval of the changes on Twitter. Shortly thereafter the GOP abruptly and unanimously decided to drop the proposed changes. Senators John McCain (R-Arizona) and Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) have joined Democrats in calling for an aggressive probe of allegations that Russia “hacked” the election. Trump has dismissed the furor, saying the country ought to “move on to bigger and better things.” On other issues, however, the president-elect and the Republican majority seem to be in agreement. Trump has pledged to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act – also known as Obamacare – the signature program of the outgoing administration. Republicans in Congress have already put forth a measure that would ensure the repeal without fear of a Democratic filibuster. Repealing many of the Obama administration’s laws will also be on the agenda, with Congressman Doug Collins (R-Georgia) reintroducing the REINS Act, giving Congress oversight over major executive actions. Trump can also reverse hundreds of regulations that fall under executive privilege, from environmental rules to school lunch standards championed by the outgoing First Lady Michelle Obama. Confirmation hearings for some of Trump’s cabinet picks are expected as early as next week, though Democrats have pledged to “vehemently resist” rushed appointments, according to the new Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York). Democrats say they will focus their opposition on Rex Tillerson, the ExxonMobil CEO tapped to take over the State Department; Georgia Congressman Tom Price, nominated to head Health and Human Services; and Steve Mnuchin, the former Goldman Sachs banker who has been offered the post of Treasury secretary.

Amalie – Light as a souffle musical visits on way to Broadway
By Lisa Lyons Special Contributor to Desert Star Weekly Amalie, the new musical based on the film of the same name, is like a macaron – deliciously light with a sweet filling. When the show premiered last year at Berkeley Rep, it was still finding its soft center. The book is by Craig Lucas, award-winning playwright (Prelude to a Kiss) with music by Daniel Messe and lyrics by Nathan Tysen and Messe. But with the addition of “Hamilton” leading lady Philippa Soo as the gamine star, along with a strong ensemble cast directed by Pam McKinnon, this current production at the Ahmanson is now heading for a Broadway engagement in Spring 2017. Will audiences there be as taken with this whimsical tale of a shy girl who discovers her path in life is to lead others to happiness? If the opening-night audience at the Ahmanson is any indication, the show should have charmed the pantaloons off Broadway theatre-goers. The show calls to mind the musical “Matilda” in its use of colorful sets, eccentric costumes and exaggerated characters, and also includes a delightfully sassy little girl (Savvy Crawford) as the young Amelie, who re-appears to converse with her older self at key moments in the show. For those who may have forgotten the plot of the 2001 film, which made a star of Audrey Tatou, Amelie is an only child born to a detached physician father (played by Manoel Felciano) and a schoolteacher mother (played by Alison Cimmet) who are unprepared to deal with this imaginative and gifted daughter. Papa only touches Amelie during her annual physical
exam and when her heart races with excitement, he concludes she has a heart condition and must be closely monitored. They are so protective that she ends up home schooled and grows up unable to form deep emotional connections to others. Even her pet goldfish Fluffy (Paul Whitty) must be given up for her health’s sake. After her devout mother’s untimely and ironic death, and her father’s retreat to the serenity of his garden and its denizens, Amelie learns to take care of herself and eventually moves to the big city: Paris. She finds a small apartment with an eccentric retired painter (Tony Sheldon) and soon finds work at a local café owned by ex-circus artist Suzanne (Harriet D. Foy), where she listens and learns about the longings of her co-workers and others; it is also there she discovers her true calling in life – to bring happy endings to the people she meets. A chance encounter with Nino (an appealing Adam Chanler-Berat) at a metro station photo booth affects her in a most personal way - she is instantly smitten with this young man whose hobby is collecting discarded photos from the booth and turning them into collages. Despite the meet cute, the path to love is not smooth; it takes the good part of the 90-minute show to finally give these two soul mates their own happy ending. The talented supporting actors play multiple roles and kudos to each of them for creating unforgettable characters. The ensemble is completed by David Andino, Randy Blair, Heath Calvert, and Maria-Christina Oliveras. The technical wizardry involved is so inventive that it almost proved distracting to
Adam Chanler-Berat and Phillipa Soo in “Amélie, A New Musical” at Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre. “Amélie, A New Musical” plays through January 15, 2017. Photo by Joan Marcus. some audience members, who spent so much time trying to figure out “how they did that,” often missing the action on stage. Bringing the magic to glorious Technicolor life are scenic and costume designer David Zinn, co-lighting design by Jane Cox and Mark Barton, sound design by Kai Harada, wig design by Charles G. LaPointe and production design by Peter Nigrini. The live orchestra sounds great under the direction of
Kimberly Grigsby, and the fast-paced and amusing musical numbers are staged and choreographed by Sam Pinkleton. One inherent problem with the show is that the main character of Amelie is somewhat of a cipher. Things happen to her but we never really understand her deeper motivations, as she is always the instigator of cascading events. Perhaps one more solo number where Amelie can
reveal what lives in the depth of her heart would flesh her out more. Philippa Soo has a lovely soprano voice and a bubbly energy in this star turn; with a little extra push, she could erase all memories of Audrey Tatou’s portrayal and make this Amelie her own. Amelie is at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles until January 15. Come and wish the production “Bon Voyage” on its trip to Broadway.
