By Desert Star Staff COACHELLA VALLEY – January 4, 2018 – The New Year promises to be one of continuing transformation as Desert Healthcare District/ Foundation Board Member Les Zendle, MD, takes the helm as president. “As I enter my second year on the Board, I am thrilled to lead the charge for the organization with a focus on services, programs and facilities, especially centered on behavioral health, and the proposed expansion of the District to encompass the East Valley,” said Zendle, adding, “Expanding access for all of our residents under our One Coachella Valley approach is essential.” Building off significant work completed by the Board over the last two years,
such as the 2017 Market Assessment that measured the current and future healthcare needs in the greater Coachella Valley, the Board of Directors, CEO Herb K. Schultz and executive staff undertook a rigorous strategic planning process. With substantial public and stakeholder input, the District/Foundation adopted a comprehensive three-year Strategic Plan last June. The District/Foundation is entering 2018 with an emphasis on implementation of major priorities using wideranging strategies that include continued and significant public input. In addition to expansion, another major priority includes providing Coachella Valley residents with an extensive roadmap
of current gaps and needs in health-related programs and services. This information and public feedback will be used to guide planning for the future to meet resident needs. Upon his election, President Zendle emphasized the third Strategic Plan priority of the District/Foundation – Community Health and Wellness – by noting the positive impacts on health that the organization has made over its more than half-century of existence: providing major funding to community, provider, and local governments for health initiatives in the region. “We’re one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the Coachella Valley,” explained the former Kaiser Permanente
Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg in 2012, but has not been billed as a festival act before. Beyonce was initially slated to perform last year, but had to bow out after announcing she was pregnant with twins. Lady Gaga took
over as a replacement, but Beyonce pledged to perform in 2018 when she announced her cancellation. The lineup marks the first time in the festival’s history that a rock band will not be among the headlining performers.

Google team flags Intel bug that may affect billions of devices By Desert Star Staff Information stored on every desktop computer, smartphone and cloud server since 1995 could be accessed by hackers if two hardware bugs are exploited, a new report has warned. On Wednesday, security researchers at Google Project Zero disclosed technical details on two security flaws that allow hackers to engage in unauthorized reads of a computer’s memory data, which may contain sensitive information such as passwords. The researchers discovered that the vulnerabilities affect many CPUs, including those from Intel, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and ARM Holdings, as well as the devices and operating systems running on it. The first method of attack, known as Spectre, can be exploited by hackers to dissolve the barrier that separates different applications and trick otherwise error-free applications into leaking information stored on their memory. Last year, researchers demonstrated how hackers could utilize “speculative execution” – a technique used by most modern processors to optimize performance – to gain access to sensitive information. To improve speeds, modern processors execute certain functions speculatively, or before it is known whether they are needed. The technique prevents the delay that would come from executing the functions after they are requested. Jann Horn, a lead researcher for Project Zero who first reported both vulnerabilities, discovered that attackers can take advantage of this technique
to read information on the system’s memory that should be inaccessible. In the original report, researchers said the vulnerability affects “billions of devices” that use microprocessors from Intel, AMD, and ARM The second flaw, known as Meltdown, allows hackers to “melt” security boundaries between user applications and the operating system normally enforced by hardware. Hackers can exploit the vulnerability to gain access to the memory of other programs and the operating system, which could include passwords and other sensitive data. In the original report, researchers said the vulnerability affects “virtually every user of a personal computer.” However, researchers at Google’s Project Zero have only been able to show that ‘Meltdown’ affects Intel microprocessors. Daniel Gruss, one of the researchers who originally discovered Meltdown, told Reuters the flaw is “probably one of the worst CPU bugs ever found.” Gruss said Meltdown was the more serious attack, because it was easier for hackers to take advantage of. However, he said that Spectre was much harder to patch, and would be a bigger problem in the future. In an overview of the attacks, researchers said it would be “unusual” for either attack to be blocked by an antivirus, since they are “hard to distinguish from regular benign applications.” Google said, however, that an attacker must first be able to run a malicious code on a computer before they can
exploit the vulnerability. Researchers also warned it would be nearly impossible to detect if hackers had exploited the weakness, since the attack would not leave “any traces in traditional log files.” In a blog posted Wednesday, Matt Linton, senior security engineer at Google, said there is “no single fix for all three attack variants,” but many vendors made several patches available Wednesday. Google provided a list of their products that are vulnerable to the attacks, as well as their mitigation status. The company said as soon as they discovered the vulnerabilities, their security teams updated their systems and affected products to protect against the attacks. Researchers also provided a link to software patches for Linux Windows, and OS X that guard against Meltdown attacks. Microsoft released a patch Wednesday to protect customers against the vulnerabilities. However, the company said some anti-virus vendors will need to update their software to be compatible
with the new patches. The company has also released an emergency update for all devices running Windows 10, and further updates are planned. Microsoft also said they are in the process of deploying mitigations to cloud services. However, the fixes will also rely on firmware updates from Intel, AMD, and ARM. Microsoft said they have not received “any information to indicate that these vulnerabilities had been used to attack our customers,” according to a statement to The Verge. Amazon has also reportedly said they have protected most of their cloud servers from the vulnerabilities. AppleInsider reports that Apple has already deployed a partial fix for the bug in MacOS 10.3.2 that was released last month. The report also said that tests show the update does not cause any notable slowdowns. On Tuesday, The Register first reported on the vulnerabilities, saying the patches to fix the problem would slow computers by 30 percent.
While researchers do not know how much the updates could slow the performance of older processors, Intel released a statement Wednesday that said the updates will not “significantly” slow computers for the average user. “Any performance impacts are workload-dependent, and, for the average computer user, should not be significant and will be mitigated over time.” Intel rejected claims that either of the vulnerabilities were unique to their products, adding that it affects “many types of computing devices – with many different vendors’ processors and operating systems – are susceptible to these exploits.” However, AMD said their products were not vulnerable to any of the attacks. “Due to differences in AMD’s architecture, we believe there is a near zero risk to AMD processors at this time,” representatives of the company told CNBC. ARM also released a statement Wednesday that said the “majority” of their products are “not impacted by any variation” of the Spectre attack.

Alcohol damages DNA, increases cancer risk By Desert Star Staff Alcohol causes irreparable damage in the DNA of stem cells, enhancing the risk of developing cancer, and costing some hard drinkers “more than just a hangover,” British scientists say. Researchers at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, gave diluted alcohol (ethanol) to mice. Afterwards they used chromosome analysis and DNA sequencing to study the genetic damage caused by a harmful chemical (known as acetaldehyde) produced when the body processes alcohol. Scientists discovered that acetaldehyde can break and damage DNA within blood stem cells, causing rearranged chromosomes as well as

permanently altering the DNA sequences within these cells. Researchers highlighted the importance of understanding the DNA blueprint within stem cells citing one simple reason: when healthy stem cells are corrupted, they can give rise to cancer. Their findings demonstrate how drinking alcohol boosts the risk of developing 7 types of cancer, including the most common types – breast and bowel. “Some cancers develop due to DNA damage in stem cells. While some damage occurs by chance, our findings suggest that drinking alcohol can increase the risk of this damage,” Professor Ketan Patel, the lead author of the study and scientist at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, said in a press-release. The study also closely inspected the way our body tries to protect itself against damage caused by alcohol. The first line of defense is a family of enzymes called aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDH), researchers said. These enzymes break down harmful acetaldehyde into acetate, which our cells can use as a source of energy. The problem is, millions of people, especially those from South East Asia, either lack these enzymes or carry faulty versions of them. As a result, while they drink, acetaldehyde builds up, causing a flushed complexion along with as a feeling of discomfort. In the British scientists’
study, when mice lacking the critical ALDH enzyme (ALDH2) were given alcohol, it resulted in four times as much DNA damage in their cells compared with mice with the fully-functioning enzyme. Cells also have a second line of defense in a variety of DNA repair systems. Although most of the time they reverse different types of DNA damage, some people carry mutations so their cells aren’t capable of carrying out any such ‘repair work.’ “Our study highlights that not being able to process alcohol effectively can lead to an even higher risk of alcoholrelated DNA damage and therefore certain cancers,” Professor Patel noted. “But it’s important to remember
that alcohol clearance and DNA repair systems are not perfect and alcohol can still cause cancer in different ways, even in people whose defense mechanisms are intact,” he concluded. Professor Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK’s expert on cancer prevention, added that this “thought-provoking research,” published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, highlights the “damage alcohol can do to our cells, costing some people more than just a hangover.” “We know that alcohol contributes to over 12,000 cancer cases in the UK each year, so it’s a good idea to think about cutting down on the amount you drink,” she said. The International Agency
for Research on Cancer (IARC), a World Health Organization body, has classified alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, along with tobacco, asbestos and formaldehyde. Scientists from Cancer Research UK warned in 2016 that alcohol would cause around 135,000 cancer deaths over the next two decades, and that by 2035, the UK could see 7,097 cancer deaths linked to drinking every year. According to the American Cancer Society, Alcohol use has been correlated with cancers of the mouth, throat, voice box, and esophagus. Alcohol use accounted for up to 3.7 percent of all cancer deaths in the US, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2013.
However, alcohol can enhance GABAA receptor signaling and reduce firing in the brain, which is why it reduces anxiety and social inhibitions. But it can also be the cause behind drunken mannerisms such as swaying, stumbling, and slurred speech. “You’re inhibiting the circuit that executes normal motor function,” said Rossi. The researchers also found that when the B6 mouse drank, the GABAA receptors were suppressed, whereas in the D2 mouse, they were not. To test their theory, the researchers injected a drug
called THIP into the cerebellum of the B6 mouse. This artificially activated the GBAA receptor, mimicking the effect alcohol had on the D2 mouse. This deterred the B6 mouse from drinking. Rossi and his colleagues say the new finding highlights a new region and new targets that can be manipulated to “deter excessive alcohol consumption, potentially with fewer side effects than other existing targets.” However, the THIP drug has so far only been tested in mice, and will need further testing before it can be considered for use in humans.
Scientists find ‘switch’ responsible for binge drinking By Desert Star Staff People who struggle with enjoying just one alcoholic drink may be able to blame binging on their brain’s wiring: Scientists say they discovered a mechanism which determines both how much alcohol a person drinks, and how much they’re able to tolerate. Researchers from Washington State University (WSU), Oregon Health and Science University, and the US Veterans Administration Portland Health Care System made their discovery while studying two mice named D2 and B6. Mouse D2 was the responsible kind of mouse who knew his limits and could stop at just one or two drinks. After that, he had trouble staying on a rotating cylinder. “He won’t drink much,” David Rossi, a WSU assistant professor of neuroscience, said in a statement. “At most he’ll have one or two drinks.” But the B6 mouse was the party animal mouse – the kind of mouse you wouldn’t want to bring home to your parents. B6 also had a much greater tolerance, managing to stay on the rotating cylinder after drinking three times as much as
D2. That amount is “beyond the drunk driving limit,” Rossi said. “It mirrors the human situation,” said Rossi. “If you’re sensitive to the motor-impairing effects of alcohol, you don’t tend to drink much. If you’re not sensitive, you drink more.” The reason behind the difference can be found in the cerebellum of the brain, in small neurons called granule cells. Sitting on top of those cells are proteins called GABAA receptors which act like “traffic cops” for electrical signals in the nervous system. They suppress the firing of neurons, or brain circuits, when activated. January 5, 2018

Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards
Thelma Houston By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, CA – Co-chairs Patrick Jordan and Lauri Kibby will join Senator Barbara Boxer on February 10 when they welcome more than 1,500 D.A.P. supporters at the 2018 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards benefitting Desert AIDS Project. The party begins with red carpet arrivals at the Palm Springs Convention Center at 5:30 pm. Now in its 24th year, the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala has raised millions of dollars to care for people living with HIV. First organized by and named for famed interior designer Steve Chase – a former D.A.P. donor, volunteer, and board member – the gala is a highlight of the desert social season and preceded the night prior by an exclusive VIP pre-party honoring major donors and celebrity guests. “Your compassionate support empowers Desert AIDS Project to think globally and act locally,” said David Brinkman, CEO. “By joining us at the Steve Chase, you join us in our commitment to 90-90-90, the ambitious treatment target to help end the AIDS epidemic.” According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), many strategies will be needed to close the book on the AIDS epidemic, and one thing is sure. It will be impossible to end the epidemic without bringing HIV treatment to all who need it. By 2020, the goal

Ross Mathews is that 90 percent of all people who have HIV/AIDS know their status, are on treatment and will have viral suppression. Kibby is raising the bar on this year’s red carpet arrivals. “The red carpet has become a party in its right, and we’re looking for ways to include all attendees this year.” Palm Springs Life Magazine had this to say about last year’s gala: “The Chase has a reputation among trendsetters as one of the few gala events where attendees are encouraged to have fun and take risks with fashion … and the guests did not disappoint. Black sequins and Mr. Turk dinner jackets were de rigueur for many men, as were wellfitted and accessorized tuxedos (which held their own alongside long gowns and sexy short dresses).” This year’s Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards will be hosted by Ross Mathews. Mathews has established himself as one of the most in-demand television personalities hosts and pop culture experts in the entertainment arena today. Endearing and witty, Mathews has won the hearts of millions of Americans since his television debut – as a correspondent for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It’s about the energy you receive, the love, and the reciprocation from the message in the music.” Attendees of The Chase know to pace themselves during the evening so they have energy left for its famous after-party, which will feature a DJ, a performance by Thelma Houston, and a series of tightly guarded surprises revealed as guests dance the night away in a lounge created inside the Palm Springs Convention Center. Guests of the after party can expect her signature blend of high- energy dance classics and soulful ballads. Thelma Houston may be best known for the worldwide success of her disco anthem “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, but her support of AIDS Services organizations is also legendary. She is known for her dedication to humanitarian causes, including tireless efforts in the battle against AIDS and deep commitments to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). In 2013, the City of West Hollywood named January 29th “Thelma Houston Day” in recognition of her many charitable activities. Powerful momentum is now building towards a new narrative on HIV treatment and a new, final, ambitious, but achievable target: 9090-90: Treatment for All. By Desert Star Staff STONY BROOK, N.Y., - Mobile app company Mobileware, Inc. (https:// www.mobilewareinc.com/) announced the release of onTime™ for Android devices. The Android version incorporates all the useful features that made onTime the most popular suite of commuter apps in the App Store. It comes with the schedules for rail, trains, and buses nationwide. onTime™ is available free on Google Play and on the App Store. In conjunction, Mobileware has made significant enhancements to the latest version of onTime™ for iOS. Enhancements include better real-time transit information, track number prediction, end-to-end ride service and scores of other features to make commuting less dreadful. “Our mission from day one is to make commuting easier and more enjoyable,” says Mobileware,
Inc. CEO, Yun Zhang. “We’ve received many requests for Android versions of our apps. This is the first time we released an app for the Android eco-system and we were blown away by the initial enthusiastic adoption and user reviews. We are also excited about getting the new features into the hands of commuters.” One of the most useful new features of onTime™ is its ability to deliver more accurate real-time information to commuters. For rail services to implement this technology using hardware is prohibitively complex and capital-intensive; onTime™ delivers a superior solution by leveraging the power of the crowd. Where available, data from commuters is aggregated and shared so that delays can be determined with high precision. Crowdsourced commuter data includes train speeds, real-time
delay estimates, and track number. Once commuters check in to their trains, all the relevant data about their trip is at their fingertips. Another useful new feature of onTime™ is track prediction. Knowing the track number early gives onTime users an advantage in securing their preferred seats without having to wait and rush for it. Additionally, getting to and from the station is now more convenient than ever thanks to the app’s integration with ridehailing service company Lyft. Known as “the first mile” and “the last mile” ride service, the Lyft integration enables commuters to arrange endto-end transportation all from within the onTime™ app when checking for their next train. The developers of the onTime™ know that long commutes can be dreadful and have therefore created some fun features to help pass the time. These

Gavin McCloud ( AKA Captain Steubing of The Love Boat television series) was all smiles escorted by his‘ two wives’, his real-life wife Patti and his TV wife from The Marie Tyler Show, Joyce Boulifant. The event was staged to perfection with the Twisted Broadway cast at its peak performance. The stellar cast from Julie Garnye to Sal Mistretta was applauded. It was a stellar evening sprinkled with stars and smiles. CVRep will “soon own our own Theatre,” reported Ron Celona,” that being the IMAX theatre complex in Cathedral City,” adding “this will give CVRep as the only Small Professional Equity Theatre in the Coachella Valley, a permanent home.”

Are Today’s Young “Gamers” Tomorrow’s Problem Gamblers? By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A study is under way to determine the extent of problem gambling in New Mexico, and whether more young people are being drawn in because today’s casino games are increasingly likely to resemble video games. Rebecca Beardsley, president of the Responsible Gaming Association of New Mexico, said the study examines the possibility that advances in technology are putting young people at risk for gambling addiction because they were raised in the age of electronics. She said since the last study in 2006, technology has dramatically changed the gaming industry. “And they seem to be catering more to the younger, up-and-coming gamblers,”
Beardsley said. “And so, what they’re doing with a lot of the slot machines is they are modeling them after video games.” The study is financed by the Responsible Gaming Association of New Mexico, a group created and funded by several tribes to help combat problem gambling. In 2015, New Mexico’s former secretary of state pleaded guilty to embezzlement and money laundering for using campaign contributions to pay gambling debts. The World Health Organization announced in December it will begin listing “gaming disorder” as a disease in new health guidelines to be published later this year. According to the WHO, the condition applies to those who play video games compulsively
for long periods of time. Beardsley said the gaming association wants to know whether more needs to be done to prevent a new generation from becoming compulsive gamblers. “So, it’s not just so much, are the kids going to start
going into a casino? It’s are the kids being set up to be at risk for an addiction such as gambling?” she said. The 2006 New Mexico study estimated as many as 15,000 women and 24,000 men in the state could be considered “problem”
gamblers. New Mexico has a state lottery and horse tracks, and gambling also is legal at casinos on reservations. More information on problem gambling is available at RGANM.org. The 24-hour gambling hotline can be reached at 888-696-2440.
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The number of white Americans who believe they face discrimination is on the rise. According to a recent poll, 55 percent of white Americans believe their group experiences racial discrimination. Clara Wilkins, an assistant professor of psychology at Wesleyan University who studies prejudice, says this perception has grown rapidly since Barack Obama was elected president. Wilkins says a subset
of white Americans saw this not as progress but as upsetting the social order. But her research finds people who believe the country is fair and just also are more likely to now see discrimination against white people. “For people who think society is fair, they’re the ones who sort of tend to think that the order of society where whites have greater access to wealth, power, status, etc. – that is legitimate and it’s fair and it’s not based in bias,” she states. “And so, if you reject those beliefs – you think
that it’s not fair – then those are the people who actually welcome social change.” As Wilkins notes, the reality is that vast inequalities in wealth and electoral representation still exist for racial minorities. And she sees the growing number of hate groups nationwide after Obama’s election as a real danger. Observers note that the white supremacists who gathered in Charlottesville last summer seemed motivated by what they described as a sense of injured entitlement.
Wilkins says she’s been able to measure similar feelings. In one study, participants either read an article on racial progress or one that had nothing to do with race. Those who read the article on racial progress were more likely to believe white people experience discrimination. And according to Wilkins, further research shows this group isn’t likely to stay on the sidelines. “The problem is that for these people who really think that the order of society should
be a particular way – what they experience by perceiving bias is that they should do something to re-establish that order,” she explains. Wilkins says demographic projections showing that white Americans will become the minority in the next few decades is contributing to the idea that white people are under attack. She says while fighting back against this perception is hard, the best way might be to downplay the idea of competition between different groups of people.
conducted the poll, and its president and CEO, Dr. O’dell Owens, says raising the age could dramatically improve public health as most smokers start before the age of 18. “If you can pass Tobacco 21, requiring people to be 21 before they can buy cigarettes you may slow their process down and chances are that if people adhere to the law you have less people entering the smoking arena,” he states. Ohio’s adult smoking rate is higher than the national average of 17 percent, and the state’s youth smoking rate of 15 percent is one of the highest in the country. Ohio has a per-pack cigarette tax of $1.60, and more than half of the people surveyed support raising the tax by 65 cents. O’dell explains there is a direct correlation between cigarette taxes and smoking rates. “The state that has the highest cigarette tax has the lowest smoking rates and
some of the states, especially the tobacco growing states, that have some of the lowest tobacco tax have some of the highest smoking rates,” he points out. O’dell notes quitting smoking can add 10 years to a person’s life. And he adds it’s an especially important issue to address for lowerincome communities, where one in four people smoke. “A lot of low-income people are stressed by their housing situation, by lack of a job or even food,” he explains. “We certainly have interviewed mothers that have stated, ‘You know I smoke so that I’m not as hungry and I can get more food to my kids. I can skip a meal by smoking.’” The poll also shows that raising the tobacco sales age to 21 and increasing the cigarette tax are both widely supported regardless of political affiliation.

changes in policy could help reduce those numbers. The Ohio Health Issues Poll examined public opinion on tobacco polices and found
that six out of 10 adults in the state support raising the age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21 years old. Interact for Health January 5, 2018
