Bye, Bye Betty As we bid the old year good-bye we also said farewell to the delightful Betty White who would have celebrated her 100th birthday on January 17. White, born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1922, moved to Los Angeles at the age of 2 with her family. While in L.A. her father started manufacturing radios, but business was so bad he traded his radios in for dogs. At one point he had 20 dogs which fostered Betty’s lifelong love for animals. She attended Beverly Hills High, served in the American Women’s Voluntary Services during World War II, worked in theater and had radio roles on

They were married for 18 years until his death from cancer in 1981. White never remarried. White was cast as Sue Ann Nivens,“the happy homemaker” on the “Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Her character was so popular Sue Ann became a regular on the show, and Betty won two Emmys for her portrayal. From 1985-1992 she played Rose on TV’s “The a home in Miami. She won Golden Girls,” a show about an Emmy for her portrayal. four senior women sharing Betty was a tireless

Antonio Brown is no longer a Buccaneer

Troubled receiver Antonio Brown had produced one of the most memorable exits in NFL history after walking out of a game before his coach announced he was off his team. In the latest dramatic twist of his controversial career, Brown removed his kit, threw his shirt into the crowd, and walked topless out of New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium in the third quarter of a game in which the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were losing 2410 to the New York Jets. Security said that Brown was escorted from the stadium by police to take a separate flight home from the rest of his team; according to one reporter, Antonio Brown ran out of the stadium shirtless &!into a police car to be escorted to flight by himself out of town away from the buccaneers!

Posing in clothes, Brown dubbed himself “supergremlin,” said he was “making a difference” and wrote: “Football is what we do, not who we are. Love.” Bucs boss Bruce Arians had reportedly angered Brown by benching him. “He is no longer a Buc,” said the coach, asking the media to concentrate on the players who ultimately won the game 27-24 for his team. They included superstar quarterback Tom Brady, who

appealed for understanding towards Brown. “We all love him and care about him deeply,” Brady said, adding their relationship goes beyond being teammates. “I think everyone should be compassionate and empathetic toward some very difficult things that are happening.” The Super Bowl champion with the Bucs had only just returned from a three-game suspension. The NFL slapped Brown with the punishment for misrepresenting his vaccination status under its coronavirus protocols. Addressing the NFL in July 2020, Brown used his Instagram account, which has more than six million followers, to insist to bosses that he was a reformed character whose image had been “distorted” by the media.

Why Let the Taxman take Your retirement Savings?? By Janice Gough In 1970, 45% of privatesector workers in America had a pension plan. By 1980, that figure dropped to 38% of private-sector workers. Today, just 18% of privatesector workers are covered by one. And most of those are blue-collar, union jobs. The reason for that significant drop-off? According to the National Public Pension Coalition: In the early 1980s, the Reagan administration changed the legal interpretation of the [401(k)] provision and was more widely adopted. Originally, the 401(k) was

intended to supplement Social Security and defined benefit pensions, a way for workers to save a little extra toward their retirement. Companies, however, began to offer defined-contribution 401(k) plans instead of defined benefit pension plans. The availability of the new 401(k) plan gave them something else to offer and helped to cut their cost because defined benefit plans are generally more expensive. Subsequently, since the early 1980s, pension plans have largely been replaced with defined contribution plans, the most popular being the 401(k). The result is that the onus of saving for retirement has been shifted from the employer to the employee … you! That’s not a knock on 401(k)s; I’m just telling you that the financial quality of your retirement depends on you and not the company you work for. If you’re a diligent saver, that’s wonderful because you can accumulate a mountain of money in your 401(k). The only problem with collecting a mountain of cash is that you will owe half a mountain in taxes when you withdraw those funds. However, two strategies can lower how much tax you’ll have to pay when you tap into that 401(k) money. Tax-Saving Strategy 1: Convert Your 401(k) to a Roth IRA There’s tons of information online about Roth IRA conversion, so that I won’t go into the details. I will tell you that Roth IRAs are such a powerful tax reduction strategy that even revenue-hungry Congress is

talking about abolishing those conversions altogether. House Democrats have proposed legislation that would eliminate Roth IRA conversions. According to Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, “IRAs were designed to provide retirement security to middle-class families, not allow the superwealthy to avoid paying taxes.” The good news is that the current proposal doesn’t eliminate Roth IRA conversions until 2032. I’m not suggesting that you rush out and convert your 401(k) into a Roth IRA. But, first, you should talk with your accountant or a tax professional about whether a Roth IRA conversion is appropriate for your personal situation. Hint: There’s a strong possibility. Tax-Saving Strategy 2: Consider a QLAC Annuity President Trump’s Setting Every Community

Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act was an underappreciated retirement rule change. The age at which you are required to start taking withdrawals called required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your retirement account was increased from 70 to 72 years old. People like me who never plan to retire face a taxation problem. Due to the Rules of the 401K, we are required to withdraw money out of our plans whether we need it or not. The extra two years — from 70 to 72 are helpful, but the IRS will still get its grubby fingers on my money eventually. Thanks to a bit of know annuity product called a qualified longevity annuity contract (QLAC), it’s possible to reduce the size of RMDs from your retirement account. You can put up to $135,000 or 25% (whichever is less) of your retirement funds into a QLAC. The

benefit is that $135,000 is subtracted from the value of your retirement account and thus lowers the RMD. For example, someone with $500,000 of retirement savings would calculate an RMD on $365,000 instead of the total $500,000 using a QLAC. The benefit is that your RMD is lower every year going forward because of the QLAC. And if you do a Roth IRA conversion, you will not need a QLAC because you will not pay a penny of tax anyway! Written Open Forum, Secret Recordings, and No Meetings

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Mr. Richardson, what are the HOA manager and board responsibilities for homeowners’ portion of the board meeting? Presently, virtual sessions are done with requests via email. Our manager crafted defensive aggressive responses and sent them before the meeting even happened. I think homeowners would have liked us appear to listen. D.V., San Diego Dear D.V.: Civil Code Section 4925(b) requires that all open board or membership meetings include a time for members to speak, subject to a reasonable time limit. declared emergencies, does not dispense with Open Meeting Act requirements. Requiring members to submit written questions in advance is not a substitute for open forum. The open forum part of meetings is extremely important. This is the one time in the meeting for attendees to contribute and comment. Members should plan their open forum remarks in advance and use their time wisely, and directors should LISTEN and not respond, argue, or otherwise interfere with a member’s allotted time. To preserve speakers’ time, questions should be answered after open forum is completed, and, unless the subject of the person’s comments is already on the posted agenda, Civil Code Section 4930(b)(1) bars directors from discussing the subject raised by the open forum comment. MUSIC

BY ROBERT KINSLER

My Favorite 21 Albums of 2021

In a year where the world struggled to overcome the continuing impact of COVID-19, a slew of great artists released masterworks created amidst the most challenging of times. Rather than attempt to rank my favorite 21 albums, they are listed alphabetically by the name of the solo artist or group.

Chvrches, “Screen Violence” (Glassnote Records) — Chvrches’ fourth album “Screen Violence” includes a number of wonderful synthpop tracks, including the towering “How Not To Drown” (a bewitching duet between lead singer Lauren Mayberry and The Cure’s Robert Smith).

Gary Allan, “Ruthless” (EMI Nashville) — Country music great Gary Allan returned in 2021 with his first new studio album since 2013. Few country artists can sing about heartache and romantic desolation with the affecting touch of Allen; the California native proves that across “Ruthless.”

Graham Coxon, “Superstate” (Superstate) — “Superstate” is actually a collection of 15 tracks composed and recorded by Graham Coxon in connection with a graphic novel written by Alex Paknadel and Helen Mullane. It’s a diverse and ambitious project that works.

Brandi Carlile, “In These Silent Days” (Low Country Sound/Elektra Records) — Sixtime Grammy Award winner Brandi Carlile shines across her astounding 10-track “In These Silent Days,” which fully showcases the singersongwriter’s amazing lead vocals and ability to mine deep emotion with each note.

Crowded House, “Dreamers Are Waiting” (BMG) — One of rock’s genuine treasures, Crowded House returned with their first new album since 2010. “Dreamers Are Waiting” finds singer-songwriter Neil Finn and company delivering a track listing as tuneful as it is impactful.

Cheap Trick, “In Another World” (Universal Music Enterprises) — Enduring rockers Cheap Trick returned with “In Another World,” which displays how masterfully the band continues to fuse power pop with hard rock in spades.

Farrington, “Saturday in Nowhereland” — When you listen to Farrington’s 2021 album “Saturday in Nowhereland” prepare to be wowed. The songs often turn on a dime, blending tuneful melodic rock, psychedelic stylings, power pop and other sonic genres masterfully. Garbage, “No Gods No Masters” — The latest album from groundbreaking band Garbage” finds the quartet tackling hot topics with a noholds-barred assault. “No Gods No Masters” is the group’s first full-length effort since 2016; check out the two-disc special edition loaded with bonus tracks. Greta Van Fleet, “The Battle at Garden’s Gate” — Rising young rock quartet Greta Van Fleet’s “The Battle at Garden’s Gate” is an ambitious affair that simultaneously challenges and thrills the listener.

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, “662” (Alligator Records) — Likely the most dynamic blues-rock guitar master of his generation, 22-year-old Christone “Kingfish” Ingram is equally talented as singer and songwriter. Check out his amazing album “662” to hear one of music’s bright new talents in action. Aimee Mann, “Queens of the Summer Hotel” (SuperEgo Records) — Originally slated to be included in a stage adaptation of “Girl, Interrupted,” the songs on Aimee Mann’s wonderful “Queens of the Summer Hotel” immerse the listener. 6 Service Members Who Went Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

By Desert Star Staff Each year, the United Service Organizations (USO) honors the heroism of junior enlisted service members with the Service Member of the Year Awards. Service members from each branch of the military are nominated by their command leadership for performing acts of valor that go above and beyond the call of duty. “These men and women have brought honor to their branch of service and to the country. They exemplified bravery in the face of danger and placed service above self,” says USO president and CEO, J.D. Crouch II. Here are the stories behind 2021’s honorees: 1. Soldier of the Year: Sergeant Breanna Jessop of Myton, Utah, serves with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. While in charge of the Karzai Airport Chapel, she ensured 4,000 military personnel and coalition forces had access to essential hygiene items. Her efforts safeguarded over 400 displaced children throughout noncombatant evacuation operations and enemy attacks and left an indelible mark on the evacuation mission of American citizens and designated Afghans. 2. Marine of the Year: As a squad leader supporting Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq, Sergeant Seth A. Dewey of Hesperia, Mich., led a team By Suzanne Potter/PNS

responsible for securing the U.S. Embassy compound perimeter in Baghdad. While subject to multiple attacks, his calm leadership and superior communication enabled vulnerable aircraft to depart the embassy helicopter pad unharmed. In addition, his actions helped shape the rules of engagement, benefiting future units and security personnel. 3. Sailor of the Year: Hospital Corpsman Second Class Petty Officer (FMF/SW) Johnnharley S. Delacruz of Fountain Valley, Calif. serves with the U.S. Navy’s Combat Logistics Battalion 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group, MEF Camp Pendleton. M2 Delacruz delivered immediate lifesaving intervention after an Amphibious Assault Vehicle sank to the bottom of the ocean during training operations. M2 Delacruz also executed an in-flight casualty evacuation independently, protecting the patient’s airway, monitoring vital signs, obtaining intravenous access and using his own body heat to impede hypothermia while in-flight. His actions enabled his patient to survive and recover. 4. Airman of the Year: Staff Sergeant Ryan T. Daggett of Greeley, Colo., currently serves with the U.S. Air Force’s 8th Security Forces Squadron in South Korea. When stationed in Portugal, he witnessed a collision involving three vehicles

and nine local nationals. He established care priorities and identified a nonresponsive victim trapped inside a car without hesitation. He pried open the disabled door, extricated the passenger and rendered necessary treatment. These immediate actions preserved a life. On a separate occasion, Staff Sergeant Daggett saved a fellow paratrooper’s life by freeing him after becoming entangled within his parachute. 5. Coast Guardsman of the Year: Boatswain’s Mate Third Class Gerrod J. Britton of Plattsmouth, Neb. serves with the U.S. Coast Guard at Station Morro Bay. While off-duty, he witnessed a car crash and

prepare. Then, when you arrive everybody is different. Once

jumped into immediate action, contacting emergency response and extracting two of the men trapped inside the vehicle. The third passenger, severely injured, was trapped underneath the car when it began to catch fire. He and another bystander lifted the car on its side. This allowed BM3 Britton to rescue the unconscious passenger through a broken window seconds before the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. He performed CPR and attempted to control bleeding from multiple severe injuries. 6. National Guardsman of the Year: Sergeant Francisco Javier Luna of Springfield, Mass. serves with the Massachusetts

National Guard’s 972nd Military Policy Company. While performing his civilian duties as a law enforcement officer, he and fellow officers received a 911 dispatcher call that a young child had stopped breathing. Sergeant Luna performed infant CPR while waiting on emergency medical services. His calm demeanor and steadfast leadership were critical in saving the baby. To learn more, visit uso.org/stories. “Putting the mission first and doing the right thing embodies the USO’s core values. We congratulate the honorees for their outstanding contributions,” says Crouch. StatePoint

By Desert Star Staff Understanding treatment options, including what type of surgery might be best for your situation, is essential for those with lung cancer. Fortunately, the past decade has brought many advances in lung surgery. For example, Robotic thoracic surgery (RAS), also called robotic-assisted thoracic surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical technique used in thoracic procedures, including some lung cancer cases. This technique can remove diseased lung tissue and surrounding lymph nodes. The American Lung Association spoke with Dr. Doug Adams, a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at TriHealth in Cincinnati, to learn more about how robotic technology is typically used during lung surgery. He laid out the general steps he follows with his patients. However, each institution may operate differently. Talk with your surgeon about what to expect. Before Surgery: Before the procedure, you’ll get information about how to www.desertstarweekly.com

at the hospital, you may go into a room where your data is confirmed, meet with the anesthesiologist, and start lines in your body. Lines are tubes usually inserted into the hands that allow the surgery team to monitor vital signs and deliver pain medication. Next, you’ll be wheeled into the operating room, sedated and placed on your side. You’ll be completely asleep during the procedure. While sleeping, the anesthesiologist places a tube into your airway to collapse the lung not being operated on. This gives the surgeon more space to operate. Then, the lung is reinflated before you wake up. Getting the Robot Ready: The surgeon finds the right spots on your body for the robot ports, like docking stations for the robot. Then, a small incision is made to place each port. Next, the instruments and camera are attached to the robot and docked into the ports, offering real-time robot control. Each surgery has the same steps, but

the connection is established, the surgeon reviews your anatomy and adjusts the surgical plan accordingly.

Removing Lung Tissue: Your surgeon sits at the console next to you and controls the robotic instruments. First, the small three-dimensional, highdefinition camera is placed through one of the ports to provide an inside view of the chest cavity. Then, robotic instruments are placed through the other ports between the ribs. The surgeon removes lung tissue through one incision. The magnified view and wristed instruments allow for precise, controlled movements without making larger incisions to open the chest or spread the ribs. Sometimes the anesthesiologist will inject a liquid called ICG into the lung, which helps the surgeon see more clearly. If you have cancer, your surgeon may also remove lymph nodes. Often lung cancer will spread to surrounding lymph nodes that imaging misses. The January 5, 2022

examines removed lymph nodes to help the cancer team determine the lung cancer stage and next steps. Post-Surgery: After surgery, a small chest tube is inserted, and the ports are removed. Next, you’re moved to recovery, where staff can monitor fluid and air leaks

no more fluid or air leaks, it usually means you’ve healed enough to go home, along with post-surgical instructions. Are you facing lung surgery? Talk to your doctor about your options, including robotic-assisted surgery. Support for this educational initiative is provided by Intuitive. StatePoint

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Auction.com at 800.280.2832 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Website address www.Auction.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA0500002620-1S. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept a cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the California Financial Code and authorized to do business in California, or other such funds as may be acceptable to the Trustee. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. Make Mealtime Easy with Simple Ingredients

FAMILY FEATURES

aintaining healthy habits and managing schedules for the entire family is often easier said than done. When you’re strapped for time, look for food and ingredients with versatility that allow you to balance nutrition with flavor. Plan Ahead by Meal Prepping Start by looking at recipes that highlight ingredients you have on hand. Meal prepping allows you to plan for a week of healthier choices and think creatively about using the same bulk ingredients in multiple ways – stretching your grocery budget while eliminating food waste. Add Something Whole Adding fruit is a smart wellness strategy, but some options are better for you than others. One example without any added sugar is Sun-Maid Raisins – a wholefruit, nutrient-dense option with 0 grams of added sugar per 1/4-cup serving. Easily added to savory and sweet dishes and snacks, raisins are reliably delicious. “Raisins do a lot of favors for your body and help keep a body strong,” said Wendy Reinhardt Kapsak, MS, RDN, president and CEO, Produce for Better Health Foundation. “The whole fruit contains fiber, vitamins and minerals, and they aid in digestion, too. Raisins also add flavor and can act as a better-for-you ingredient. Whole fruits like raisins are a fabulous addition to breakfast cereal, yogurt, salads, fancy party trays and trail mixes, and they are a convenient on-the-go snack that travels well.” Swap Recipe Ingredients Substituting ingredients for more nutrition and less sugar can transform your favorite dishes into healthier versions. Using lean protein in place of a higher fat alternative or switching traditional pasta for zucchini or squash noodles are two popular options for main dishes. You can also make better-for-you baked goods by replacing oil with an equal amount of applesauce in muffins and quick breads or half as much applesauce as oil in a recipe for a cake or cookies.

Practice Smart Snacking Choosing snacks that are nutrient-dense and fulfilling can give your body the energy it needs between meals. As a result, you’ll be less tempted to nibble on empty calories or sit down for a meal feeling overly hungry, which makes it harder to practice portion control. Portable snacks like dried fruit and trail mix are good for an onthe-go pick-me-up.

Deliciously Good Dried Fruit Traditional dried fruits like apricots, dates, figs, prunes and raisins are filled with nutrients and natural goodness. They are naturally low in sodium and have no saturated fat. Dried fruits also contribute to your daily intake of potassium, which helps maintain healthy blood pressure. Phytonutrients found in dried fruits help suppress the growth of oral bacteria associated with cavities and gum disease. Not only do dried fruits help your digestive system by providing soluble and insoluble fiber, they also contain fructans that are considered prebiotics, which are believed to improve gut health. Naturally fat- and cholesterol-free, a 1-ounce serving of dried fruit contains less than 100 calories. Eating certain whole fruits, including raisins and other dried fruits, is also associated with a lower risk for Type 2 diabetes.

Clean Out the Kitchen Kids and grownups alike tend to gravitate toward what’s simple, tasty and accessible. As you get into routines, use a critical eye to take a look at the choices in your cupboards, pantry and fridge and see where you can make some changes. While an occasional treat is perfectly fine, filling your kitchen with healthy amounts of tasty and nutritious ingredients and snacks makes it easier to form healthier habits that will stick.
