When is Enough, Enough? The “Fight for $15” movement that began with fast-food and other low-wage workers helped spark California’s latest round of minimum-wage hikes. (NY Communities)

California Minimum-Wage Hike Helps, but Not Nearly Enough By Desert Star Staff PASADENA, Calif. – Low-wage workers won a victory with California’s minimum-wage increase, in effect starting this week. The increases will be yearly and incremental, this year, it’s 50 cents, bringing worker pay to $10.50 an hour

and ultimately, to $15. But for many, it still isn’t really enough to get by. About 22 percent of Californians live in poverty, and the service workers’ union SEIU said that’s essentially because seven out of ten jobs pay less than $15 an hour. Frank Trejo is one such worker. At 23, he said he’s

By Desert Star Staff A startled guardsman at Buckingham Palace reportedly almost shot the Queen after she went for an unexpected 3am walk around the gardens. Per the Times, the soldier was on patrol on the palace perimeter during the early hours of the morning when he spotted a figure in the darkness. He reportedly challenged the potential intruder by shouting: “Who’s that?” On realizing it was the Queen, who had ventured out after a bout of insomnia, he said: “Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I nearly shot you.” Expecting a serious

dressing down by the monarch, he was surprised when the 90-year-old responded: “That’s quite all right. Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.” The near-miss was reported as it emerged that the venerable military ceremony of handing over the guard may be rescheduled due to security concerns. The changing of the guard parade, in which one group of soldiers takes over from another, will now take place on fixed days during autumn and winter. Normally, the handover

supporting himself, his mother and two younger relatives. “Right now I’m working two jobs,” he said. “In the morning, I open at McDonald’s from 4 to 12, as maintenance, and then I go to my second job as a dishwasher.” Some small businesses say they empathize with workers

but just can’t afford the pay hike, and might even relocate to states like Nevada, with its $8.25 minimum wage and fewer taxes and regulations. Others argue that focusing on pay rates, instead of keeping jobs in-state and improving job training, won’t do enough to patch the deeper problems

around job creation. Trejo said his mom, who also cares for a young niece and nephew, will soon be moving. Pasadena, where the median household income hovers around $70,000 and rent tops $1,400 a month, is just too much for the family right now.

Benjamin Millepied and Natalie Portman. Photo by Pat Krause By Pamela Price The Palm Springs International Film Festival put the spotlight on Natalie Portman as the recipient of the coveted Desert Palm Achievement Award for bringing “complex characters to the screen for years.” Her Oscar-winning role in the 2010

Darren Aronofsky film, Black Swan was just one of the milestones in her career. Tom Hanks, himself honored with The Icon award, described Portman’s talent, declaring, “we should know more about her than we do” followed by her “unknowable mystery, although she is one of the

most well-known women throughout the world.” In her selected filmography starting with Drop-Dead Gorgeous (1999) her career is diverse from Star Wars: Episode 1-The Phantom Menace to the recently released film, Jackie. She is on the cover of the January edition of Palm Springs Life magazine, the writer commenting on Ms. Portman’s performance of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy “hiding as a character even more famous, and private, than herself.” On the red carpet at the Palm Springs

Convention Center, she was stunning in a simple, yet glamorous black grown, while pregnant with her second child. She is married to Benjamin Millepied, who co-starred with her the film, Black Swan (2010). Tom Hanks did double duty as her presenter preceding his being honored with the Icon Award for the film Sully. During her acceptance speech, Portman commented on her background, having been born in Jerusalem in 1981 to an American mother and Israeli father. She spoke of her

grandmother who emigrated to Palestine in the 1930s reflecting when life was so difficult she had to share a dress with her sister. The critically acclaimed roles Ms Portman has undertaken have resulted in her 2011 Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. ‘Amelie’ A Whimsical New Musical at Ahmanson and DVD Updates

It’s not often that Angelenos get to see a new musical production before it opens on Broadway so enjoy the opportunity to experience the winsome, imaginative “Amelie” at the Ahmanson before it opens on Broadway in March 2017. Other musicals, prior to “Amelie,” that moved from the Ahmanson to Broadway are “Curtains,” “9 to 5: The Musical” and “The Drowsy Chaperone.” “Amelie,” the musical, is a reimagining of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 2001 film “Amelie”

that starred the wide-eyed Audrey Tautou as a young girl who led a very sheltered and lonely life before moving to Paris. In the film, much of what Amelie is thinking and feeling is conveyed by closeups and facial expressions; on stage, her emotions are expressed in song. The new stage musical, written by Craig Lucas (Book), Daniel Messe (Music) and Nathan Tysen, who co-wrote the lyrics with Messe, is directed by Pam MacKinnon. As the show opens there is a large picture frame through which the future characters in Amalie’s life walk out on stage. As she grows older, they will all play a part in her story and she in theirs, Young Amalie (ten-yearold Savvy Crawford) is an inquisitive little girl who leads a very quiet, sheltered life. Her father, a physician (Manoel Felciano), decides that Amelie should be home-schooled for health reasons so her only companion and friend is her pet goldfish “Fluffy.” The adult Amelie is performed by Phillipa Soo, who received a Tony nomination for playing Hamilton’s wife in the Broadway smash hit “Hamilton.” As a young adult, Amelie moves to Paris. She has an avid imagination, but does not connect with too many people other than her co-workers in a Montmartre cafe. Things change somewhat when she discovers a little treasure box under the floorboards of her apartment. Inspired by watching Princess Diana and Mother Teresa on TV, she suddenly decides to devote her life to secretly helping others. Her first saintly task is to find the little boy, now a grown man, and anonymously return the box filled with his childhood treasures.

As she explores Paris in her quest to do-good deeds, she notices another free spirit, Nino (Adam ChanlerBerat) who collects discarded pictures from the train station photo booth and places them in a book he carries. She feels a connection to him, but is too shy to ask him why he is gathering the pictures. When he accidentally leaves the book behind one day she tracks him down in the hopes of helping him secretly. But are they destined to ever meet face to face and fall in love? This could be a problem for Amelie because as a child, her mother taught her that everything is always half way out of reach. But perhaps she and Nino could each walk halfway toward one another and meet in the middle? As Amelie interacts with others, she, and we, meet all sorts of quirky characters, including a garden gnome (David Andino), who, thanks to Amelie, gets to travel around the world, this is a very clever bit. To say more would ruin the fun. Tickets for “Amelie” are available by calling (213) 972-4400, online at CenterTheatreGroup.org or by visiting the Center Theatre Group box office at the Ahmanson Theatre, located at The Music Center, 135 N. The Gala is always sold out months in advance. Nearly 2000 people attended the Gala to watch all the Celebrities turning up at and getting awards. Chairman Harold Matzner told the audience that the event had raised over 2.3 Million Dollars that go toward film Society Educational programs as the PSIFF is a non-profit event. Entertainment Tonight alum, Mary Hart served as emcee once again this year as she has in years past. I was on the Red Carpet again this year to be able to photograph the many famous celebrities faces that we see on the big screen. Mayor Rob Moon was one of the first on the Red Carpet, and this year brought Digicon students as guests. Many

You always know when a celebrity will soon be on the Red Carpet because of all the screaming from across the street. Fans started arriving the night before to be first in line for a celebrity autograph or photo if the star decided to come across the street to greet them. Many times some of the most famous stars will give an autograph or pose for a photo for their fans, like Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman to name a few. The Red Carpet was a little less formal I think this year as several actors from the same movie greeted each other with hugs. Nicole Kidman made a special effort to give her friend Amy Adams a huge hug. Natalie Portman that is with child had conversations with friends before giving interviews to the TV crews waiting. Vampire Lesbians of Sodom & Sleeping Beauty or Coma

By Desert Star Staff Rancho Mirage, CA - The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley’s LGBTQA+ Stage Company, will present Charles Busch’s off-Broadway smash hit comedies VAMIPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM and SLEEPING BEAUTY OR COMA, opening Friday, January 20, 2017 for a fourweek run. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2 PM, through February 12, 2017. One of the longest running plays in Off-Broadway history, VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM is the saga of two fatally seductive vampiresses whose paths first collide in ancient Sodom. Their bitter rivalry as bloodsuckers but more importantly, as actresses, endures for two thousand years with stops along the way in 1920s silent movie Hollywood and contemporary Las Vegas. The New York Times said of the show, “Nothing escapes the demolition by laughter.” Liz Smith called it “The Season’s Best Comedy.” Joining VAMPIRE

LESBIANS OF SODOM is its companion piece SLEEPING BEAUTY OR COMA, the classic fairy tale retold in London’s 1960s fabulously mod fashion world. Both pieces contain very funny adult material, and VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM contains brief nudity. Loren Freeman and Kam Sisco portray the two vampiresses, and other delightful characters. Many other roles are played by DRP Company members Jacob Betts, Richard Marlow, Terry Huber, Adina Lawson and John Fryer, along with Steven Ciceron in his Playhouse debut. Jim Strait directs and designs the production with costumes by Allan Jensen, wigs by Toni Molano, scenic painting by Walter Lab, and lighting designed by Phil Murphy. Edward Monie is Executive Producer. The Desert Rose Playhouse is a project of Desert Rose Productions, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit corporation. VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF

Music Can Be A Major Key To Therapeutic Healing

By Desert Star Staff Music plays a significant role in nearly everyone’s life, but for some people it represents much more than an invitation to dance or a soundtrack for the morning commute. Researchers have found that music therapy provides a diversion from negative feelings and helps manage the pain of not only adults, but of children with developmental, physical, behavioral, and neurological disabilities. It also increases range of motion and motor skills, and in some cases is a replacement for medication. In short, its therapeutic uses are many. “Music is invaluable to people with special needs, allowing them to express themselves non-verbally,” says Travis Perry, a music teacher for more than 35 years and inventor of ChordBuddy (www. chordbuddy.com), a device that makes guitar-learning easier for anyone – including those with disabilities. “Veterans can use music to help cope with PTSD as www.desertstarweekly.com

well as other physical injuries. Senior citizens can learn to play the guitar, which helps build hand strength.” One recent study showed that music therapy can even help children cope with routine immunizations, making them less stressed – and their parents less stressed as well. While music therapy is known to be fruitful for the person needing therapy, the results also can be a gratifying for the teacher. Perry says he’s found it especially satisfying to teach the guitar to autistic children, who can be challenging but ultimately rewarding pupils. In fact, a small number of people with autism are musical savants, according to the American Music Therapy Association, but all benefit from music therapy interventions to enhance their social, communicative and motor skills, among other needs. Generally, children with autism aren’t able to make what would be considered a pleasing sound on the guitar

without some assistance. Perry uses his invention to help them. Instead of positioning their hand into the correct chord positions – often tricky for even ablebodied learners – they can just press a tab that results in a clear, strong chord sound. Perry, who has appeared on the popular TV show Shark Tank, didn’t actually have music therapy or people with special needs in mind when he invented ChordBuddy. He was trying to help his daughter learn to play and her frustration became his inspiration. “When learning an instrument, it’s important to have success right away, and that can be difficult to do with the guitar,” Perry says. “Most people give up within the first couple of months and the guitar ends up in a January 6, 2017

closet. That’s why I’m so excited when I know I’ve

been able to help a specialneeds child, a veteran with PTSD or a senior citizen with arthritis make music. “You realize the odds they’ve had to overcome, both with the usual hurdles to learning and their personal difficulties, and that’s very fulfilling to me.” About Travis Perry: Travis Perry has been a music teacher for more than 35 years and is the inventor of ChordBuddy (www.chordbuddy.com).

28th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival begins By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic From small acorns large Oak trees grow and grow. In 1989, then celebrity Mayor Sonny Bono, decided that what his desert paradise city needed was a little more glitz, klieg-lights, and glamor. So he and a group of his show business pals put together a business plan, recruited a sponsor like Nortel to help pay the bills and the first Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) was born. Twenty Eight years later PSIFF has not only grown in prestige, star-studded celebrity attendees and award-winning films from around the world, it’s become the third largest film festival in North America, and it all takes place right here in our own backyard. This year’s festival launched last Monday, January 2, with a spectacular Awards Gala celebration and dinner for some 2400 guests and celebrity attendees at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Harold Matzner, Chairman of the Festival Board, stated that “there are more than a dozen major stars – including Casey Affleck, Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman , Annette Bening, Mahershala Ali, and Amy

Adams, plus Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, and Kevin Costner from the cast of “Hidden Figures”, and Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling from “la la land” – who will be among the Academy Award nomination contenders attending our Film Awards Gala.” This year’s festival also introduces its new Festival Artistic Director Michael Lerman to Palm Springs filmgoers. Lerman and his staff of programmers have culled and curated a festival that boasts over 190 films, from 72 countries, including 58 premieres (9 world, 5 International, 20 North American and 24 from the USA) over the two week festival run. Lerman promises there is something interesting, no matter one’s tastes, for everyone who attends. And the Festival never disappoints in that regard. This year’s PSIFF opening night festival film will screen the World Premiere of the CBS Film “The Sense of Everything” directed by Ritesh Batra, starring Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling, Harriet Walter, Freya Mavor, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary of ‘Downtown Abbey’), Matthew

Palm Springs Mayor Moon and his Digicom guests. Photo by Pat Krause. Goode, also of ‘Downton Abbey’, and Billy Howle. The closing night film is Sony Pictures Classic film “The Comedian”, directed by Taylor Hackford and stars Robert DeNinro, in the title role of Jackie Blake, a bitter, angry insult comic who was once the popular star of a TV sitcom, and is now trying to claw his way back on the stand-up circuit, one scabrous joke at a time. The film’s supporting cast features Leslie Mann, Danny Devito, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Keitel, Patti LuPone, and Edie Falco.

With casts of such highpowered actors to book-end the two week festival, tickets and passes are going to be at a premium and snapped up quickly for the 190 plus films. This festival is one of country’s top movie festivals featuring top tier actors, writers, directors and technical geniuses. You won’t want to miss out on seeing and possibly rubbing elbows with your favorite actors at the various screenings. Past festivals have produced more than 135,000 film junkies, filmmakers, along with sophisticated and dedicated

audiences who frequent the area’s restaurants and watering holes. It’s exciting, it’s informative, and it’s entertaining. Don’t Miss It! Repealing Affordable Care Act Breeds Uncertainty By Vince Marino/KMIR COACHELLA VALLEY - Health insurance experts say repealing the Affordable Care Act without a specific replacement plan from President-elect Donald Trump will bread uncertainty among healthcare consumers. Since it’s passage, hundreds of thousands of residents in the desert have received coverage, those with preexisting conditions can no longer be denied insurance and young adults can remain on their parents plan until they turn 26. But president elect Donald Trump has repeatedly called the law “a disaster” and has made clear his

intentions to repeal and replace Obamacare. Health insurance experts say the Affordable Care Act does have its share of problems. “It’s not a perfect law and there are fixes that you can make to it. But to basically say we are going to replace it and not know what and when, breads uncertainty,” said Desert Healthcare District CEO Herb K. Schultz. President-elect Trump’s move to replace Obamacare won’t be easy. “I think the hard part is going to be for the new administration to come up with a plan that makes sense. The more and more people look

at the affordable care act, the more they realize there wasn’t a heck of a lot else we could do,” said Independent Health Insurance Agent Randy Foulds. Health experts say individuals who enrolled through Covered California should not be affected in 2017. Covered California has stated that they are a stand-alone entity and are no longer relying on federal subsidies. But after a year of back in forth between democrats and republicans, it’s very difficult to say what could happen with any certainty. “I think we don’t know what it looks like because what we’re hearing now is a lot of potential solutions,” said Schultz.

January 6, 2017

“It’s really up in the air right now. I mean, who knows? If you force insurance companies to take people with preexisting conditions, that means their costs are going to be higher,

they are going to pay out a lot more in benefits, premiums will be going up just like they have been. Not a lot would change,” said Foulds.

KMIR Sports Catches Up with DJ Alexander

By Julie Buehler/KMIR The Kansas City Chiefs won the AFC West for the first time since 2010. After they beat the San Diego Chargers 37-27 on January 1st, they added the final notch in their belt and swept the entire division. It was the first

KMIR Sports caught up with him over the phone as the Chiefs enjoy a first-round bye thanks to their 12-4 record. “Our main goal, before the season even started was get to the Super Bowl,” Alexander says. “I think towards the middle of the season, I felt like people doubted us, but I think we earned respect back by finishing off the season the way we did and getting the number 2 seed.” One of Alexander’s NFL mentors is veteran and Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson. Alexander took over the role a few weeks ago as one of the team’s starting inside linebackers when Johnson went down with a ruptured Achilles. Alexander says this was a difficult reality for the team to face. “When Derrick went down, it was heartbreaking. You hate to see a guy like that go time they went undefeated down and suffer an injury like in the division since 1995. that,” says Alexander. “He’s Palm Desert High School been a mentor to all of us graduate, DJ Alexander, was linebackers, inside, outside, 4 years old then. He’s now he’s led us in the right direction listed as the starting inside and set the stage for us. He’s linebacker for the Chiefs and a great guy. You hate to see getting ready for yet another post season run with the team. that go down like that.”

But Alexander says the team responded well and in the sport of football, or any sport, it’s about perseverance. “I think everybody handled it pretty well. That’s the sport of football. You have to overcome it and move on and try to finish the season the way you want to,” says Alexander. “It’s just next man up. We want to take care of it and get that ring for that guy. He’s earned it. We want to reward him and get him that ring.” And while his head coach Andy Reid is seen as one of the “old school” kind of coaches, Alexander says Reid’s energy makes the Chiefs locker room a fun one to be in. “It’s fun man, Coach Reid is a straight shooter, but we feed off his energy. It’s a great group of guys to be around.” And of course winning is fun as well. Not only are the Chiefs enjoying of the most successful seasons in recent history, but Alexander himself is having a remarkable year, even voted as the first alternate for the Pro Bowl for his special teams play. But he says the phone call

that delivered that good news initially caused some distress. “I got a call from our GM John Dorsey,” Alexander tells KMIR Sports. “Obviously, I didn’t have his number saved in my phone, and when I answered and he said ‘Hey DJ, this is John Dorsey’, my heart sunk because I was wondering if I’d been traded or something happened... So, it kind of went from the lowest of lows to a real high as he told me ‘I just want to congratulate you on being named a first alternate to the Pro Bowl.” It’s all part of the growth Alexander says he’s experienced in his second year in the league. “Your first season in the NFL, you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Alexander says. “By the second year, you have that experience under your belt... I think my second year was a lot easier than my rookie year because I knew was was coming and was prepared for it.” The Chiefs finished with a 12-4 record and earned a first-round bye in the playoffs. Oregon Dungeness Crabbers Join West Coast Strike

By Desert Star Staff WARRENTON, Ore. -- Dungeness crab dinners could be hard to come by in Oregon and along the West Coast because of a dispute over the price crabbers get for their catch. Fleets from Central California to the Canadian border are refusing to fish as the crabbing season opens along the coast. The strike is due to a price drop before Christmas, when Pacific Seafood began offering $2.75 per pound instead of $3. John Corbin, an Oregon fisherman and chairman of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission, said crabbing is expensive, especially with the substantial amount of bait that is used. “They’re getting us on both ends here,” Corbin said.

“They’re charging us more for bait and they’re wanting to pay less for the crabs. So, it’s just cutting into the bottom line, and we just can’t do that.” According to Corbin, Oregon state officials have been mediating negotiations with the seafood company. Pacific Seafood has said it is just one of many buyers on the West Coast, and it doesn’t set the price alone. Corbin said commercial crabbers would much rather be fishing, but the price drop could set a precedent they can’t afford, especially with recent increases in fuel prices. He said the strike affects a lot of families. “We’ve got about 1,200 boats, that’s 4,000 to 5,000 fishing families that are unemployed right now,” Corbin said. “The processors

don’t have crab for their workers to process, so there’s processing families that are unemployed. There’s a lot of

people affected by this.” On Wednesday, crabbing opened on Washington state’s coast, but no

crabbing vessels set out. The Quinault Indian Nation has also joined commercial crabbers in the strike.

By Vince Marino-KMIR PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -The Palm Springs International Film Festival is expected to draw major Hollywood stars like Tom Hanks, Annette Bening and Nicole Kidman but the festival will also draw plenty of movie fans and that is good news for local businesses. “During the film festival we get a lot of added business, there’s a lot of foot traffic,

people from all over the world. So we actually get the pleasure of having all kinds of guest come in and enjoy dinner here at Lulu,” said Emily Morison, event coordinator at Lulu California Bistro. The hospitality industry is expecting to see a considerable economic boost from the film festival. Hotels in the Palm Springs area are seeing an uptick in reservations. Since the

event lasts for two weeks, rooms are being booked both on the weekend and during the week. “Huge impact. Not only the room nights it generates but this event generates tons of national and international publicity,” said Hilton Palm Springs general manager Aftab Dada. Visitors come from all over the world and for many of them, this is not

their first Palm Springs International Film Festival. Hotels in Palm Springs are seeing a lot of repeat costumers and local restaurants are also reaping the benefits of the film festival. “There’s people from all over the world. There’s people that are local, a lot of the locals get involved with the volunteering and that affects our business and brings in a lot of people,” said Morison.

“It has a wonderful impact of bringing different people into our restaurant to taste our food...international people from all over the world. And also the people involved in putting the film festival together as far as producers, directors, actors and just the film goers,” said Antonette Kelly, general manager of Las Casuelas Terraza.
