Julian Assange Freed
Assange WON’T be extradited to the US on spying charges in shock decision at London’s Old Bailey. Jubilant scenes have greeted Judge Vanessa Baraitser’s decision not to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the US to face espionage charges at London’s Old Bailey courthouse. Assange, 49, is charged with 18 counts of conspiring
to hack US government computers and the publication of confidential military records, including a video of a 2007 Apache helicopter attack in Baghdad. A dozen people, including two Reuters journalists, were killed. In her ruling, Baraitser said that freedom of speech
rights do not provide “unfettered discretion by Mr. Assange to decide what he’s going to publish.” However, in a decision that shocked many, including Assange’s own supporters and legal team, Baraitser found that extradition would be oppressive given Assange’s mental health.
Shred It And “Forget It
By Pamela Price The City of Cathedral City’s community’s first one-hour shredding event of 2021 took place on January 2January 2, opening promptly at 8AM with two professional shredding trucks, parked side by side, ready to shred documents from accounting files and any payroll records to canceled checks and credit card documents. The event, staged in front of Cathedral City’s City Hall, was thanks to a community service created by Cathedral City. This hour-long shredding is the first of five this year, with the next shredding events scheduled for February
6February 6, March 6March 6, April 3April 3 and May 1May 1. These shredding opportunities are free for Cathedral City residents exclusively. These Cathedral City supported events “help stop identity theft,” according to Deanna Pressgrove, Cathedral City’s Environmental Conservation Manager. Five banker-sized boxes or plastic bags per resident or household are eligible for shredding. The signage on each of the two trucks display their motto “We Protect What Matters” —and your

Handing down her judgment, Baraitser said the impact of Assange’s extradition to the US on his family, partner Stella Morris and their two sons Gabriel and Max would be “sadly nothing out of the ordinary.” Throughout his trial, Assange’s defense team
claimed the decision to extradite and prosecute their client was politically motivated, “during a unique period of US history under the Trump administration.” Baraitser found insufficient evidence that the charges Continues on Page 5
5 Steps Schools Are Taking to Help Feed Children By Desert Star Staff Nearly 30 million children in the United States rely on school meals for a significant portion of their daily nutrition. Since the start of the pandemic, the number of food-insecure children has increased 20% to 1 in 4. Although many schools are operating remote or hybrid models, most are still open full-time for feeding students. An issue-framing report by GENYOUth, a national nonprofit dedicated to creating healthier school communities, addresses what’s at stake for schools today, progress that has been made, challenges they face and key opportunities that exist. It concludes that although the role of the school building has changed this year, health-promoting schools supporting the “whole child,” including ensuring children receive proper nutrition, matter more than ever for students to live full, productive lives. Due to COVID-19, school nutrition professionals, bus drivers and volunteers are taking measures to distribute and deliver school meals through a variety of methods that enable social distancing, including grab and go, bus stop drop off and drive-thru pick up. Creating Extended Meal Pickup Times: During the initial lockdown, many families
were home and had greater flexibility to pick up meals during a narrow window of time. However, as people return to more typical work schedules, their availability to take advantage of provided meals is compressing. Some districts are expanding, even doubling, their pickup windows to provide greater access for families.
Eliminating Barriers to Providing Meals: School feeding programs are typically required to collect income eligibility applications from families to determine if children are eligible for free or reducedprice meals. Due to the pandemic, the United States Department of Agriculture is allowing schools to waive those requirements and offer free meals to every student. In addition, many school feeding sites don’t require students to be present to pick up food; parents, siblings or caregivers can collect the meals. Raising Awareness of Options and Locations: In response to crisis-level foodinsecurity, GENYOUth, working with multinational software corporation SAP, engineered the SAP4Kids digital schoolmeal locator app so families in need can find food and other resources near them amid the pandemic while also providing
Photo courtesy of Getty Images ways for organizations to offer additional support. Providing Multiple Meals at a Time: Scheduling is also a factor, leading some schools to offer multiple meals at a time. Whether it’s meals for a full day or enough food for several days, offering multiple meals at a single pickup time streamlines scheduling for both the school and families. In addition, it reduces points of contact, helping to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Seeking Assistance and Support: Federal funding
continues to support school meal programs, but schools are also partnering with a wide range of organizations committed to students’ nutrition needs. One example is GENYOUth’s Emergency School Meal Delivery Fund, which has provided thousands of schools with millions of dollars in grants and in-kind support. The fund provides monetary grants to schools to supply resources for meal distribution and delivery to help ensure children continue getting nutritious meals. “We are at an extraordinary moment where schools are

prompting accusations the UK edition is endangering lives amid the Covid-19 crisis. The publication ran a feature in which it photographed and interviewed 11 women who represented the different “sizes” of healthy. “‘Healthy’ can be a loaded word. We asked these women to open up about their personal journeys to reclaim ‘healthy’ as their own,” Cosmo explained. One of the women, social media influencer, Callie Thorpe, told the magazine she focuses on what her body can “do” rather than how it “looks.” Echoing similar sentiments, yoga teacher Jessamyn Stanley said she has embraced her body size and has learned to tune out “fatphobic comments” on social media. Twitter users responding to the feature didn’t appear to be particularly sympathetic, however. “This is how the left has warped so many minds: we’re told if we fail to *celebrate* obesity, it means we *hate* obese people,” noted one reply. Another disapproving commenter pointed to how Cosmopolitan’s idea of “healthy” has radically changed over the years and shared an old issue of the magazine dedicated to “health
taking unprecedented, heroic measures to get meals to kids,” said Alexis Glick, CEO of GENYOUth. “Our fund provides grants to schools for the equipment, transportation and resources they need to feed kids daily. I believe the only hunger children should face is a hunger to learn.” To learn more about the report or donate to the COVID-19 Emergency School Meal Delivery Fund, visit genyouthnow.org or text “SCHOOLS” to 20222 to make a one-time donation of $25. and happiness” featuring actress Audrey Hepburn. The contention that there’s nothing unhealthy about being overweight is not just wrong, but also irresponsible, others argued. “Why is Cosmopolitan trying to kill obese people, who are particularly vulnerable to Covid?” asked conservative pundit Ian Miles Cheong. Obesity has been found to increase the risk of severe Covid-19 symptoms, and impair the body’s ability to create antibodies, making overweight people more susceptible to mutations of the virus. Notably, a paper published in July concluded that obesity was the most common comorbidity among Covid-linked deaths. This isn’t the first time Cosmo has taken the flak for celebrating plus-sized bodies. In 2018, its cover featured an obese model, Tess Holliday. It was widely criticized for promoting an unhealthy lifestyle. The American model was unapologetic for her appearance in the issue and lashed out at the “horrible people” who were “whining about how me being on the cover of a glossy magazine impacts your small-minded life.” www.desertstarweekly.com
Transforming the Workplace
By Janice Gough One of the most significant issues to face the new administration, and Congress will be the dramatic transformation of the workplace, which is likely to accelerate at an even faster pace due to the COVID-19 pandemic. President Biden’s campaign proposed investing $50 billion in workforce training. Still, to succeed, it will be essential to involve the business community to ensure the practice addresses the skills needed for the changing workforce, especially amid the current unemployment crisis. Valley as cities here in the Valley must diversify business types, where we attract more Science, Electronic, and Math, and Technology. Money to provide businesses with workplace training would be much needed in our transformation. Overall, the pendulum is likely to swing from an agenda that generally favored employers to one that is more pro-worker. Employers will need to learn their new obligations and closely follow the regulatory and legislative changes required to come and be diligent about compliance. They will have to make sure their Human Resource administrators are re-trained for all changes made to keep compliance intact. The PRO Act’s stated purpose is to expand unionization, enhance remedies for unfair labor practices, safeguard the right to strike, and permit ‘fair share’ union dues. The PRO act could bring some big changes to the workplace, including the “gig economy,” as it redefines concepts such as “employees” and “supervisors” in a more union-friendly way. Those who hire independent workers for short term jobs are referred to as Gig workers.
The Biden campaign also strongly supported raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. It may be tough to get this passed as employers are already stretched to their limit moneywise. Biden’s administration will likely bring forth legislation on pay equity, harassment, and sick leave, which are likely to pass. President-elect Biden’s campaign endorsed fewer restrictions on immigration compared to the Trump administration. Their research
Where Is the Property Line? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL
Dear Kelly: My association has taken the stand that a side fence on a zero lot line single family dwelling that is entirely on the dwelling’s property is shared 50/50 with the neighbor for maintenance or replacement costs. In my opinion, this is totally incorrect that a neighboring property owner would be responsible for a fence that is entirely on a neighbor’s property. Have you ever seen this with other zero lot line HOAs? Thanks, R.M., Placentia
the responsibility for a shared fence. I am assuming that your HOA is a planned development and that the fences between neighboring yards are not located in common area. The CC&Rs might address responsibility for shared fences, or otherwise the board may want to consider proposing an amendment to clarify that subject. There is also Civil Code Section 841, California’s “Good Neighbor Fence Act of 2013” which took effect in 2014. Under that law, fences dividing adjacent properties are the shared responsibility of the two neighbors. Hoping this is helpful, Kelly
Dear Mr. Richardson: I have a question regarding Dear R.M.: For the property ownership. Our readers’ benefit, let me explain condominium complex consists of free-standing houses each “zero lot line.” This normally with a yard or patio yard. Our means the buildings are built onto at least one of the property condominium plan has a map with boundaries that include the boundaries. There are two unit with the front yards/patios major items which can affect
along with a description that a unit consists of the dwelling, garage and private yard areas encompassed by the unit boundary line shown on the plan. This might conflict with other language in the CCR’s. This is coming up regarding a project in which one owner is of the opinion that based on the tract map the yard is his own private yard area and he owns it. It is my opinion that this is a condominium and that he doesn’t own the land but is exclusive use common area with input on the project by the HOA. Thank you for any direction you can provide. R.A., Lawndale Dear R.A.: The condominium you describe is exactly like a planned development except for being called a condominium. This style of HOA is an increasingly common way for developers to avoid the various zoning

I refer to those as “lot line condominiums,” since the boundary of the unit as defined in the condominium plan is exactly the same as a normal planned development lot, with property lines – except it is called a “unit.” Your HOA should consult an experienced real estate or HOA attorney to confirm exactly what is “unit” and what is “common area,” in order to prevent future confusion and disputes. Your experience illustrates the importance of that oftenoverlooked document, the condominium plan. Its map and “notes and definitions” section are often very important in clarifying the property rights which are separately owned (“unit”) and shared (“common area”). The condominium plan is filed with your county Registrar-Recorder and so is public and easily retrievable through your HOA legal counsel or a title company. Sincerely, Kelly Kelly G. Trump suing Georgia’s sec of state over leaked call By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump has reportedly filed lawsuits against Georgia’s secretary of state after a call was leaked to the media. He seemingly demanded that officials “find” votes in his favor to flip the state. “President @ realDonaldTrump has filed two lawsuits – federal and state – against @GaSecofState. The telephone conference call @ GaSecofState secretly recorded was a ‘confidential settlement discussion’ of that litigation, which is still pending,” David Shafer, Georgia Republican Party chairman, tweeted on Sunday, shortly after the Washington Post, the New York Times, CNN and other media published a recording of Trump’s wide-ranging call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and a host of other officials, as well as his campaign lawyers. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, conservative lawyer Cleta Mitchell, and Georgia-based attorney Kurt Hilbert were on Trump’s end of the receiver. At the same time, Raffensperger was joined by his office’s attorney Ryan Germany and Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs. Shafer tweeted that the
purportedly complete recording of the call, released by the Washington Post, was in effect “heavily edited” and failed to include the part where Meadows allegedly stated that it was “to discuss the settlement on pending litigation.” However, the Washington Post denied that they somehow tampered with the recording, insisting that they have published “the entirety of the call, from start to finish.” “There is no mention of it being a confidential settlement meeting. None,” WaPo’s political reporter Amy Gardner tweeted. The call lasted about one hour and focused exclusively on the issue of election fraud, with Trump accusing Georgia electoral officials of not doing enough to uncover multiple alleged irregularities. The president has repeatedly referred to “shredded ballots” in Fulton County and elsewhere and cited reports “of dead people” on voter rolls. He has also doubled down on his campaign claims that Dominion voting equipment was somehow involved in the plot to tip the vote in Biden’s favor, alleging in the call that the company was “moving fast to get rid of their machinery.” However, Germany rejected the assumption, answering “No”
when asked if that was the case. Throughout the conversation, Trump insisted that he had won the state by a large margin, in contrast to the 11,779 votes he officially lost. “I’m just curious, why wouldn’t, why do you keep fighting this thing? It just doesn’t make sense. We’re way over the 17,779, right?” Trump told Raffensperger, saying that he “just” wants to “find 11,780 votes” instead of tens of thousands more he believes he received in Georgia. Closer to the end of the discussion, Trump appeared to
lay the blame on Raffensperger for a potential loss in the Senate Georgia runoffs, saying that people would not turn out at the polls because of what he “did to the president.” Trump then suggested Raffensperger takes into account his grievances and amends the “faulty election results.” “Well, under law, you’re not allowed to give faulty election results, OK? You’re not allowed to do that. And that’s what you [have] done. This is a faulty election result,” Trump said, noting that Raffensperger would be “really respected” if “this
thing could be straightened out before the election.” “And I think that it is essential that you meet tomorrow and work out on these numbers,” he added. Since it was released, the call has sparked a flurry of accusations against Trump, with critics accusing him of arm-twisting Georgia’s secretary of state into overturning the vote. Some suggested that Trump, who is set to leave the Oval Office in less than 20 days, should face another impeachment procedure over his alleged abuse of power.
Match Your Winter Skin Care Routine with Your Active Lifestyle

inter weather can pose some unique challenges to your skin, especially if you’re trying to maintain an active workout routine. Exposure to the elements while exercising outdoors can have a harsh impact on the skin. On the other hand, the humidity and constant running of heaters can also wreak havoc if the weather forces you to work out indoors. “The winter season can be a challenge for those trying to maintain their workout regimens, especially this year when many people are staying closer to home,” said Dr. Jeanine Downie, board-certified dermatologist and Medline Remedy consultant. “An outdoor workout is a great way to get some fresh air and burn calories, but it’s also important to nourish your skin before and after you’ve completed your workout.” Just like establishing a good winter workout routine, there are some things you can do to keep your skin in shape all winter long. Use sunscreen any time you venture outdoors and dress for whatever elements you may be facing. Be sure to remove wet clothes, which can create friction and skin irritation, immediately after returning inside. Limit the length of hot showers, which can also dry out skin, and use a quality moisturizer, especially after exposure to harsh weather. Learn more about winter skin care at remedyderm.com.

Long-Lasting Moisture
Enriched Skin Nutrition
When you spend time working out outdoors, your body’s natural hydration is more prone to evaporating. That, in turn, can lead to dry skin. Whether you’re battling rough skin or simply want to help keep your skin hydrated, a clinically tested lotion can help maintain the skin’s natural defenses. After spending time outside and every time you wash your hands or bathe, help retain moisture for up to 24 hours with an option like Remedy Dermatology Series Body Lotion, which includes safflower oleosomes for lasting moisturization with natural oils. Its smooth, rich formula absorbs quickly, leaving skin feeling soft with no greasy or oily residue.

Recipe courtesy of “The Atkins 100 Eating Solution” Total time: 50 minutes Yield: 24 cookies 1 cup sugar-free smooth or creamy peanut butter 2 teaspoons stevia extract powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup sugar-free semisweet chocolate chips 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt Set oven racks in upper- and lower-third positions. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. In medium bowl, use handheld electric mixer on medium speed to beat peanut butter, stevia, baking soda and salt,
scraping down sides if needed, until well combined, about 1 minute. Reduce speed to low, add egg and vanilla extract; beat until combined. Shape dough into 24 balls (about 1 tablespoon each) and place 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheets. Using tines of fork, carefully flatten each ball, creating crisscross pattern. An Easy-to-Follow Food Guide The latest science continues to support the many health benefits of a low-carb approach to eating beyond just weight loss. Simply reducing your carb and sugar intake by two-thirds over the “Standard American Diet” helps avoid the development of obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. While many eating approaches can be vague in their approach, “The Atkins 100 Eating Solution’s” fan-favorite program provides a clear-cut way to control your carb intake with 100 grams of net carbs (the total carbohydrate content of the food minus the fiber content and sugar alcohols) and shows you how to make delicious and satisfying food choices that lessen their impact on your blood sugar. This personalized approach is a way of eating you can follow for life. With cutting-edge research and delicious recipes, this book provides a variety of foods with plenty of room for personalization. This easy-touse guide, written by Colette Heimowitz, the company’s vice president of nutrition and education, can also show you how the plan can be modified to fit in with most ways of eating, including vegetarian, Paleo, Mediterranean and more regardless of food preferences, lifestyle or cooking abilities. Expert: Contesting Electoral College Results ‘Dangerous’
By Desert Star Staff MADISON, Wis. -Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson is part of a contingent of Senate Republicans planning to challenge the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential election victory. One political expert predicts it won’t change the outcome but could harm democracy. Johnson and nearly a
dozen other Senate members have vowed to fight the results when Wednesday’s vote takes place. Matt Barreto, the cofounder of the UCLA Voting Rights Project, said because the House has to vote as well, the plan isn’t likely to succeed. “They are attempting to use centuries-old loopholes to try to at least make one final stand,” Barreto said.
He said it’s fairly straightforward not enough Senate Republicans will participate in the protest to make a difference. But he warned giving a platform to unfounded claims of voter fraud could mean some Americans never acknowledge the presidential election results, and could lead voters to distrust the system in future elections. Sen. Johnson said his group is protecting voters’ views who don’t think Biden’s
victory is legitimate. Barreto said it appears GOP lawmakers who have joined the challenge are not doing so because they think it will work. He said it looks like they have other reasons. “Many of the Republicans who will face reelection in 2022 are nervous about those Trump voters, which appear to be such strong supporters of the president,” he said. He said even the appearance that these

But that was among the dozens of legal challenges - including several in the Badger State - which ultimately proved unsuccessful in overturning the election results. Brian Dennehy Stars In The Tender DRIVEWAYS – His Final Film
What makes DRIVEWAYS particularly poignant is that it was Brian Dennehy’s last film before he died, and his cinematic presence will be sorely missed. Written by Hannah and Paul Thureen, and superbly directed by Andrew Ahn, this is a tender story about new beginnings and how friendships can relieve the pain of isolation. Kathy, soulfully played by Hong Cha, who was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead, arrives in a suburban New York town from Grand Rapids, Michigan with her son 8-year-old son Cody, played by a very gifted Lucas Jaye. Their mission is to clean up the home in which Kathy’s sister April lived until her recent death. The home is cluttered with stuff piled up from the floor to ceiling with not an inch of open space – a daunting task of getting the house ready to sell. To give you a visual point of view, think along the lines of Grey Gardens, where Jackie Kennedy’s aunt and cousin lived. Although the bones of April’s home might be salvageable, it is hard at
first to see through the debris. As mother and son arrive, the next-door neighbor Del, a lonely Korean War vet, brilliantly portrayed by Brian Dennehy, who gives a powerfully interior performance, watches quietly from his porch. A widower, he eats alone every night, intimately captured by Paul Thureen’s delicate cinematography, which closes in on Del’s loneliness. His daughter Lisa is a judge in Seattle and is trying to find housing for him to be closer to each other. The initial relationship between Kathy and Del doesn’t start off so pleasantly. Still, Cody, a very sensitive, vulnerable child, immediately bonds with him and that relationship is the basic building block of the story. One way that Del fills his time is to play bingo with friends at the VFW, and when Del’s friend Rodger, played by an adorable Jerry Adler, forgets to show up to drive him to the center, Kathy jumps in and takes him there. Now because bingo is a form of gambling, the “caller” insists that Cody must leave.
Brian Dennehy as Del with Cody, the boy next door played by Lucas Jaye in Andrew Ahn’s “Driveways.” There is a big “discussion,” and he finally relents and allows the young boy to stay. At the VFW center, we meet Del’s other good friend Lester, well played by Stan Carp. However, Del and Rodger’s relationship is incredibly close, and there are some funny scenes between them.
Kathy (Hong Cha) with her son Cody (Lucas Jaye) arrive in a small New York town to sell her late sister’s home.
Meanwhile, Cody and Kathy, who does medical transcriptions and is studying to be a nurse, have been staying at a motel, but soon it becomes too expensive. She and her son clean out the front porch, and that becomes their sleeping quarters. Getting rid of the clutter begins in earnest, and little by little, they begin to clear out the mess. Cody would walk over to Del’s porch in-between times, and each of them would get absorbed in their reading material while looking over once in a while to make sure make everything is okay. Another neighbor named Linda (Christine Ebersole) shows up one day with her two grandsons, Brandon (Jack Caleb) and Reese (James DiGiacomo), who you just know are not nice kids. She invites Cody over to play with them, and the evening does not end well. This is an emotionally, quietly powerful affecting film, depicting how Del and Cody’s loneliness becomes a pathway to forming a quietly loving relationship. The writing accomplishes this with a minimum of dialogue. It’s also about life’s transitions and friendship, which, in only an
83-minute film, captures the essence of each. Ahn’s subtle directing allows his characters to basically find each other, and we see how they bond out of a sense of loneliness. One of the film’s joyous moments is the birthday party Kathy organizes for her son at the local skating rink, which turns out to be a failure. Del comes to the rescue and transforms it into a joyous celebration of this particular kid. Here we are with new beginnings and endings – for each of these three principal characters has experienced both. What is particularly sad is that one of our great American actors, Brian Dennehy, who appeared in 180 films and television and theatre productions, is no longer with us. Still, his body of work, especially his Oscar-worthy performance in “Driveways,” will live in cinematic memory. College Credit for Experience Could Help Displaced Workers
By Desert Star Staff Workers and students who’ve lost jobs during the pandemic and want to continue their education might be able to receive college credit for previous life or work experience. University of Louisville Professor Matt Bergman said most Kentucky colleges, technical schools and universities offer Prior Learning Assessments to determine which skills and experiences are credit-worthy. But he said www.desertstarweekly.com
these “PLA” programs are vastly underutilized, especially among Black students, Pell Grant recipients and people at community colleges. He said PLAs could be used to help re-skill workers to jumpstart the economic recovery post-COVID. “Individuals basically will be performing regular job duties and have continuing education as well as professional development, [and] would be able to tap into what they’ve learned along the
way and use that for college credit,” Bergman said. He said the Commonwealth could boost access to PLAs by standardizing the process statewide and promoting credit-for-prior-learning options as critical components of degree programs. He added when students move between colleges, they risk not having all their previous course credits transferred, so schools also need to establish guidelines for accepting prior-learning credits January 6, 2021
awarded by other institutions. Bergman said receiving credits for prior learning can save students time as well as thousands of dollars. But PLAs also offer business benefits for colleges since tuition revenue increases when a school can attract non-traditional students who might not otherwise enroll. “We’re retaining those individuals at a greater rate - therefore, bringing in more tuition and improving graduation rate and their pace to graduation,” he said.
He pointed out colleges can use PLA programs to recruit diverse and multigenerational students, especially those with military or corporate training, nonprofit and government experience. Research by the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education found adult students who participated in PLAs were 17% more likely to complete their college degree.
