Life Coach’s New Year’s Advice for Latinos: Go For It! By Suzanne Potter/PNS It’s that time of year where we make our New Year’s resolutions, and some in the Latino community are reaching out for help sticking to their plans. The pandemic brought extreme hardships, but the economic recovery and labor shortage also present new opportunities to move up the ladder or find a better-paying job. Margarita Flores, a pastoral associate and chaplain for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles who founded Instituto Latino Life Coaching in Compton, said many Latino communities suffer from a crisis of confidence. “In the Hispanic community, you don’t have too many people encouraging you to ask yourself, ‘What is the next step in my life,’ because the next step requires change,” she said, “and change is the

biggest fear that people carry.” Instituto Latino offers life-coaching sessions in Spanish at meager rates on a sliding scale, so even people who are struggling financially can work on personal development, organizational skills and self-esteem. A recent study called “A Portrait of California 20212022” found that Latinos have made the most progress of any ethnic group in health, education and standard of living over the past ten years. However, Latinos remain the lowest-paid ethnic group. In particular, Latinas in the Golden State earn just over $25,000 per year, compared with about $62,000 for white men. Flores said Latinos make up almost 40% of the state, so the future of California depends on the success of this community.

“I believe that helping selfesteem and empowerment for mothers, fathers, entrepreneurs, leaders in our churches and communities

is essential,” she said. With determination and a helping hand to guide and encourage them, she said, people can develop the

courage to go for that next job opportunity, improve relationships with family and friends, get a handle on debt and live their best lives.

Apple briefly became the world’s first $3 trillion Company Apple briefly became the world’s first $3 trillion company today based on market capitalization, which is the total value of all of the company’s outstanding shares. The milestone came after Apple’s stock price rose over 40% last year. The impressive feat, which Apple achieved when its stock price reached the $182.86 mark during intraday trading, came just over 16 months after Apple became a $2 trillion company and less than three and a half years after Apple reached the $1 trillion mark. Update: Apple’s market cap was slightly below the $3 trillion mark again as of the stock market closing at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Apple has reported strong earnings results since the start of the pandemic, as its products and services have been in high demand as more people work, learn, and connect with others from home. As a result, its revenue is forecasted to top $118 billion in the current quarter, surpassing its all-time quarterly record of

$111.4 billion set a year ago. In a memo shared with staff when Apple hit the $1 trillion mark in 2018, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the achievement was “not the most important measure of our success,” adding that “financial returns are simply the result of Apple’s innovation, putting our products and customers first, and always staying true to our values.” “Hitting $3 trillion is another historical moment for Apple as the company continues to prove the doubters wrong with the renaissance of growth story playing out in Cupertino,” said analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush, which has a $200 price target for AAPL. Apple will look to build upon its success in 2022, with a wide range of products rumored to launch, including at least five new Macs, a redesigned iPad Pro with support for wireless charging, a rugged version of the Apple Watch, second-generation AirPods Pro, an AR/VR headset focused on gaming, content consumption, and communications, and more.

Only 4 Weeks Left on Covered California Open Enrollment

By Suzanne Potter/PNS With the Omicron variant spreading like wildfire, many people without health insurance are searching for options - and may find them on the Covered California marketplace. The open enrollment period runs through January 31. James Scullary, a spokesperson with Covered California, said the uninsured risk getting stuck with huge medical bills if they have to go to the hospital. “Hospitalizations,” said Scullary, “particularly those that require Intensive Care Unit treatment, can be costly and average more than 127,000 dollars per visit.” The bill for someone with COVID who only needs outpatient care - commonly

The state estimates that 1.1 million uninsured Californians are eligible for free or very-low-cost coverage via Covered California or Medi-Cal. Scullary said the cost varies by zip code, income, and how many people in the household need to be covered. “The savings and the financial help that is now available through the American Rescue Plan is so significant that if you checked a year ago, the entire thing is different,” said Scullary. “Many people are paying less than $10 a month for comprehensive coverage from a name-brand people on Covered California plan that fits their needs best.” are paying less than $100 a He adds that 75% of month for their brand-name

she was a champion before she even stepped into the ring for the final match. “I had a good feeling about it as soon as this fight started. She looked ready, she was jumping around, and the other girl looked a little nervous. So, I kind of knew that we were gonna leave national champions, and I talked to her before, and I told her, and she did what she had to do, and we came out on top.” Winning a national championship at 17 years old is impressive already, but to do it with only three years of training? An incredibly rare accomplishment. “I’ve always been into sports,” Jocelyn explains, “but I wanted to try something new; it was like three years ago, my first fight and I had won. It was just an amazing feeling, and that’s when I knew this is definitely for me.” Her Dad, Valente, was initially reluctant, but once he saw the joy boxing gave his daughter, he was compelled to support her. “I was kind of scared. I was like, ‘my baby’s gonna go out there and compete!’ but she went in there ready to fight, and she liked it. She came out with a smile and came out with a victory, so I

knew that we got something.” Jocelyn trains out of Lee Espinoza’s boxing gym at the Coachella Valley boxing gym. Espinoza started training Jocelyn three years ago and simultaneously taught Valente how to be a trainer for Jocelyn. “He started kind of teaching me how to do the moves. I started picking up things and quickly learning and putting in hard work, and here we are.” Jocelyn’s dad is now her primary trainer, and together they won a National Championship. “It’s really amazing, our bond has grown stronger from this.” Jocelyn says, “literally without him, this would have never happened.” Being able to train and spend time with his daughter is something Valente and the Camarillo family enjoy the most. “We get victories together, we get to lose together, so I mean, it is what it is, and we do it together.” Jocelyn is a senior at Shadow Hills high school, and her career aspirations are to continue boxing, go to college, and be an example for young women and girls who want to try a sport like boxing. “I’m happy that I was able to prove for the Coachella and for my gym that girls can do it. If girls want to join a sport, that might be considered a maledominant sport. I love sparring boys, actually, because I like getting the reaction like ‘oh my gosh, she’s kicking that boy’s

butt!’ so that just goes to show again that girls can kick butt just as much as guys can.” Source: NBC Palm Springs

Train Your Dog Like an Artist

By Desert Star Staff Did you know that dog training is an art? Many different techniques can be used to train your pet. For instance, if you want your dog to sit, you can use the timer method. Your dog will be rewarded when it finishes sitting for three seconds. As you increase the complexity of the exercise, your dog will get bored or frustrated. So, when you’re teaching your puppy to sit, keep it short and straightforward. Dogs naturally act based on what they want. So, the first step is to understand how they communicate.

For example, your dog may whine when it’s hungry, paw at the door when you need to let them out, and chase squirrels. They might also sit on armchairs to catch the afternoon sun or bring you a ball when they’re ready to play. You can make training more attractive by combining visuals and verbal cues. By rewarding your dog every time, they behave in a certain way; you will encourage your pet to repeat the behavior repeatedly. Dog training is known as the “Where’s My Chicken” method, and if you teach your pup to sit on your lap, you’ll quickly become a master at it.

Dozens of CA Pro-Democracy Rallies Set for Thursday

By Suzanne Potter/PNS More than 60 rallies and candlelight vigils are taking place across California on

Thursday, all to mark the first anniversary of the U.S. Capitol insurrection. Last year on Jan. 6, four

people died when thousands of rioters attempted to stop the certification of President Joe Biden’s election. Since

then, said Justin Kwasa, democracy program director for the League of Conservation Voters, the threat to the nation’s democracy has only deepened. “Instead of just giving up,” he said, “they actually went back to their individual states and introduced over 400 voting-rights bills to continue to suppress the votes of the American people.” Rally organizers promote four bills they say are “prodemocracy” - bills that have passed in the U.S. House but are stalled in the Senate. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would require federal court approval to change voting laws in states with histories of racial discrimination. Another bill would make Washington, D.C., a state and give its voters a voice in Congress. Critics of

these efforts, including Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., have said the bills are an attempted “power grab” by Democrats. According to Kwasa, the Freedom to Vote Act would make voting in all states as accessible as it is now in California. “Having online registration, early voting; allowing people to vote by mail with no excuses,” he said. “It makes that available across the country, from the federal level.” Another piece of legislation, the Protecting our Democracy Act, would be a check on abuses of power by the president and Cabinet-level agencies. Absent Republican support, however, Democrats will need to make an exception to the filibuster to get any bills to the president’s desk.

Federal Law Against Surprise Medical Bills Helps Extra 6 Million

By Suzanne Potter/PNS This week the new federal law forbidding surprise medical bills goes into effect, protecting an extra six million Californians. In the past, patients could be stuck with a massive bill if they used an in-network facility but still ended up with an out-of-network provider. The California version of the law, passed in 2016, did not apply to some people, such as federal employees, who had federally-regulated health plans. Rachel Linn Gish, director of communications for the nonprofit Health Access California, noted her group recently updated a study, which showed California’s bill, a model for the federal legislation, has benefited patients without the pitfalls

opponents had predicted. “Providers are being paid fairly and on time,” Linn Gish observed. “There have been very few provider complaints or appeals. And the networks have actually increased, which has improved patient access to care.” Regulations to implement the federal law establish “qualifying payment amounts” so providers and insurance companies can work things out and stop scaring patients with large unexpected bills. Health Access California offers a fact sheet with more details, and specific provisions are explained by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Linn Gish added patients still need to pay close attention.

“They shouldn’t be getting a surprise medical bill,” Linn Gish emphasized. “But they should still be vigilant about what their plan covers, what it doesn’t cover, what the costJanuary 7, 2022

sharing is on their plan, and whether their providers are in or out of their network.” Going forward, advocates are working to protect consumers from

surprise bills from ground ambulance services. Disclosure: Health Access contributes to our fund for reporting on Health Issues. www.desertstarweekly.com

“Artificial Morality”

Scholarship recipient directs the world premiere of a new play by Tony Padilla

By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs—Desert Ensemble Theatre continues its new residency at the Palm Springs Cultural Center in January with award-winning playwright Tony Padilla’s world premiere of Artificial Morality. Former student intern and scholarship recipient Cameron Keys direct the production in a company first. Shawn Abramowitz, DET’s Executive Director, is the assistant director. DET Artistic Director Jerome Elliott announced that, due to the current COVID/ Omicron surge, audiences would be limited to 40 per performance (one-third of theater capacity). “The health

and safety of our audience, actors and crew are of paramount importance. We will limit seating to create ample opportunity for social distancing. Further, all audience members must provide proof of vaccination at the door and wear a mask during the performance. All actors will be tested before performances. In this way, audiences can continue to experience compelling live theatre during this challenging time.” Artificial Morality centers on the character of Rufus Foster,

who lands an entry-level job at a publishing house. What will he say or do in his insatiable desire to advance his career? Playwright Padilla states: “Artificial Morality looks at how technology is shaping our character in the 21st century. It questions the limits of ‘free speech and examines our rapidly changing moral values. The play was inspired by actual events that made me question where our society is heading when we no longer suffer the consequences of our actions.” Keys was the recipient

College of the Desert to San Francisco State University. “We are thrilled to allow Cameron to direct during our eleventh season,” said Elliott. “Throughout his participation in our internship program, he demonstrated excellence in every aspect of production. In addition, his eagerness to direct demonstrates our internship program in action. Notably, four additional former interns and scholarship recipients have returned to work with us professionally in production and design roles this season. We are extremely proud of their achievements.” DET company members and Desert Theatre League Award winners Fergus Loughnane and Bonnie Gilgallon return for this production. said Deed of Trust, with interest thereon, as provided in said Note(s), advances if any, under the terms of the Deed of Trust, estimated fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligations secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of this Notice of Trustee’s Sale is estimated to be $341,130.96 (Estimated). However, prepayment premiums, accrued interest and advances will increase this figure prior to sale. Beneficiary’s bid at said sale may include all or part of said amount. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept a cashier’s check drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the California Financial Code and authorized to do business in California, or other such funds as may be acceptable to the Trustee. In the event tender other than cash is accepted, the Trustee may withhold the issuance of the Trustee’s Deed Upon Sale until funds become available to the payee or endorsee as a matter of right. The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Nationwide Posting & Publication at 916.939.0772 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Website address www.nationwideposting.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA07000216-21-1. Notice to Tenant NOTICE TO TENANT FOR FORECLOSURES AFTER JANUARY 1, 2021 You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 916.939.0772, or visit this internet website www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case CA07000216-21-1 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. Sisters of the Valley Bring Back the Bundle

Permanent discounts on product bundles and now featuring mushroom coffee in individual travel packets for people on the move By Desert Star Staff Merced, California -- The Sisters of the Valley, known by many as ‘the weednuns,’ have released new products and new bundles, combining the best of their CBD and the best of their mushroom coffee product lines into discounted bundles. Explains Sister Kate, “When Covid lockdown happened in early 2020, we decided to take on a big project that was a lot of work but needed to be done. We had to completely rebuild our online store for search engine optimization and join the new era. When we took on that project, our bundles fell off the shelf, and the thing about our product bundles is that they give an ‘all time’ discount that our base has been deprived of for eighteen months. So today, as we introduce individual mushroom

coffee packets and the ability for people to try our new mood-stabilizing mushroom coffee without spending very much, we are also bringing back our bundles.” The Sisters have nine different bundles in the store that permanently provide a 15% to 30% discount over individually purchased items. They have soap bundles, incense bundles, CBD salve and oil bundles. In addition, the Sisters have just combined their mushroom coffee with their hemp tea for more healthy morning brew options. The Sisters believe that when capitalism works the way it’s supposed to when a free market is at play, competition drives them to excellence. Sister Sophia explains, “I saw that happen during the Covid economy when suddenly, we had to put a lot of energy into making

sales happen. Suddenly, we had to improve everything about what we did to compete – faster shipping times, more communication with the customers on the

status of their orders, more marketing, more everything. Before these times, we always bragged that we don’t sell, we serve, because back then, as much as we made, we

sold. Today, the economy is much different, and we have to hustle. Bringing new products and new bundles to the market is our way.” Store: www.sistersofthevalley.org

Strike a Pose to Get in Shape

One advantage of yoga is it can be practiced virtually anywhere. While a mat isn’t strictly neces sary, it does help cushion your feet and prevent slipping. If you plan to join a class, loaner mats are generally well-sanitized, but having your own may give you peace of mind. When shopping, remember thinner mats are best for stabilitybuilding poses while thicker mats work well for thera peutic sessions. Also consider materials; natural mats are more eco-friendly while PVC mats are easy to clean and more affordable. Photo courtesy of Getty Images
