PSIFF 31st Annual Film Festival Launched with “An Almost Ordinary Summer” from Italy By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association The Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF), the third largest film festival in America, began in 1989 as the dream of then

The focus in the early days was to kick off the festival with an opening night foreign film. PSIFF came to be known as

This is the Kick-off Start to the 31st Annual Festival. The Film this year was, An Almost Ordinary Summer,. This Film is an Italian farce about how a family vacation turns upside down when their 2 older Grandfathers break

the news they plan to marry at this late stage of their lives. This of course causes much hysteria among the family members. I asked filmgoers about the Film, and many had diverse opinions, citing OKs, Not so good, and loved it. All people with tickets to the Film are allowed to go to the Palm Springs Art Museum for the biggest afterparty of the week. Spencers Restaurant served a fantastic meal for everyone. There was a massive table with 4 whole

legs of beef to carve for sandwiches. Cheese, crackers, and fruit were at the center with refreshment bars set up at the back. Waiters and waitresses walked around with trays of appetizers filled with shrimp, salmon on a cracker, meatballs, small sausages in a bun, and more. There were several buffet tables set up in a smaller area with salads, pasta, rolls, and again more. No one should have gone hungry. Guests found seating all over the city, which was the

central part of the Museum while listening to flute music. Opening night film is usually sold out as the price of a ticket entitles them to attend this fabulous afterparty. There is a Valet service to park your car so guests could walk the stairs to the party. The Museum has opened its doors for this party for years and does a great job while guests can walk around and peruse all the beautiful art the Museum has to offer. Hundreds of people filled the whole area again this year, and

all had big smiles on their faces. Local Palms Springs Officials and the Film’s Director walked the Red Carpet before the showing of the Film. It was a treat to see the staff of the Film, “ The Steed” arrive dressed in the beautiful and colorful costumes portrayed in their movie. The Director, Producers, and a young child actor came to the Red Carpet to promote their movie. A great start to a wonderful PSIFF event again this year.

How to get off on the Right Foot for the New Year

By Janice Gough Many times, we may forget to take the time to reflect on the past year and to establish where we want the new year to guide us. The New year brings us back at ground Zero. It is a unique dynamic. Some of us get it and relish the chance to start over and accomplish things we’ve never done before while measuring ourselves against past years. While others may look at the New Year as a fresh start and completely forget what came before since we want to be positive about the future. I offer these quotes as “food for thought.”

• “We face the future fortified with the lessons we have learned from the past. It is today that we must create the world of the future.” Spinoza • “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift.” Dale Carnegie To grow, we must understand History, even in our own lives. Whether you are running a country or improving your life or business, understanding what caused us not to succeed will help us set our course for the future. Mistakes and Failures create Wisdom, which can only be learned and help to develop our ability to become stronger leaders. We are facing a New Year and new and better choices. Now, here’s the real question; What will you be doing to get 2020 to become more successful in achieving your goals and dreams? We have the opportunity to achieve a completely different outcome for 2020. The past year was a tough year for many of us. This Era of time, is a swift-moving, demanding, and a fastchanging period. You are not alone in having the feeling of being overwhelmed. Holidays

created more work for our overloaded agendas. This new Era requires us to be multitaskers. We must learn new technologies, new products, new laws, regulations, and legislation, and keep all the commitments that need your business or personal life to be sustainable…we are all under pressure. Unlike the Past, Our lives are not solely contained in one community. No matter where you live, you are likely required to travel to create opportunities for your business and personal life. For the New Year, I wish to provide some strategies that can be used to ensure your new direction. By establishing a new Road map for the future, you can move forward with renewed energy and commitment to yourself and your goals. 1. Write down your unfinished goals. First, take the time to write down all of the things you may have been missed. We all have things that we planned to do and may not have fully accomplished. To change anything in your life, you must first take 100% responsibility for everything in it. Then, list the reasons why you didn’t

fully achieve the results you intended for each of the things on your list. This list will aid in developing new plans and ideas to change conditions and improve outcomes.

2. Reflect on the goals you accomplished. After you have this list and reasons, make another list of all that you did accomplish in the past year in all the different areas of your life. Write down even the smallest wins and the progress you’ve made toward the bigger goals, also if they aren’t fully accomplished yet. Maybe you cleaned out the clutter in your garage, reorganized your office, or developed a new skill that is bringing you closer to your bigger goals. Twelve months is a significant amount of time and each day, in itself, and holds a small victory. This list will likely be much longer than the one you previously made. When you have both lists in front of you, a few things will happen: First, you are going to see how you have room to improve for this year. You may even feel a sense of renewed energy to create plans for how to better approach those unfinished goals. View this list as things you now have in your power

to improve this year to achieve your big overarching goals. By viewing the list of goals you have accomplished, it will inspire you to work smarter, not longer. Then it will enable you to set your Road map for the future while providing a sense of closure for the past year. This process of self-reflection is critical to your ongoing success in the year to come. 3. Turn your attention to the coming year. Rededicate yourself to leaving behind any feelings of regret and turn your attention toward creating more time and success in all areas of your life. Then, Recognize the Power of your Potential. 2020 Girl Scout Cookie Season Launches with New Cookies

By Desert Star Staff Today, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. (G.S.U.S.A.) launches the 2020 Girl Scout Cookie season, when Girl Scouts across the United States become entrepreneurs as they earn money to power their leadership opportunities and adventures. This season, G.S.U.S.A. announces two sweet new ways to celebrate young female leaders: refreshed packaging reflecting the amazing experiences cookie earnings make possible for girls, and a new lemon cookie available in select areas. The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches girls about entrepreneurship as they have fun learning essential skills like money management, public speaking, and decision making, which set them up for a lifetime of success. Nine in ten Girl Scouts say the cookie program has built their entrepreneurship skills and their interest in pursuing entrepreneurship as a career path—so every cookie purchase is an investment in the world-changing business leaders of tomorrow. What’s more, every purchase stays local to power amazing experiences and leadership opportunities for girls in communities across the United States. G.S.U.S.A.’s refreshed cookie packaging (with the same great taste!) continues to emphasize what the cookie

program is all about, and the updated images feature current Girl Scouts taking part in a diverse range of experiences available to members—from adventure-packed camping and canoeing to exploring space science and designing robots, to taking action to improve their communities. Every purchase of Girl Scout Cookies makes experiences like these possible for girls in your local community. The new Girl Scout Cookie is Lemon-Ups, a crispy lemon cookie baked with messages inspired by Girl Scout entrepreneurs. “I am a gogetter” and “I am an innovator” are among the eight phrases that bring the experience of Girl Scouting to life. The variety replaces the Savannah Smiles® cookie in markets where it was offered, joining the national lineup that also includes the Lemonades® cookie, savory slices of shortbread with lemonflavored icing. Each of the two varieties is provided in select Girl Scout council markets, ensuring all consumers have access to a delicious lemon Girl Scout Cookie for as long as supplies last. “Everyone loves Girl Scout Cookies—but the program is about so much more than cookies,” said GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo. “Girls learn about entrepreneurship as they run their cookie businesses. The important business and financial literacy skills girls learn through January 8, 2020

the program are proven to build their leadership skills and position them for success in the future. When you purchase cookies, you are helping girls power their Girl Scout experience, and you’re supporting female entrepreneurs.” Girl Scout Cookies can only be purchased from a registered Girl Scout. To find Girl Scouts selling cookies near you, visit www.girlscoutcookies.org or use the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, free on iOS and Android devices. We’re Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Our extraordinary journey began more than 100 years ago with the original G.I.R.L., Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low. On March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, she organized the very first Girl Scout troop, and every year, we’ve honored her vision and legacy, building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. And with programs from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success. 2020 Legislative Session to Again Focus on Education

By Desert Star Staff SANTA FE, N.M. -- New Mexico is losing experienced educators every day, according to the president of the state’s teachers’ union, who says steps to increase school funding must be a priority in the 2020 Legislature. Mary Parr-Sanchez, newlyelected to head the National Education Association-New Mexico, was a Las Cruces middle-school teacher for 25 years. She said New Mexico took “baby steps” in 2019 to address long-term funding for education, and lawmakers need to do more if the state hopes to retain experienced classroom personnel. “Because it is wearing out our experienced educators,” Parr-Sanchez said, “especially in the area of bilingual education.” She said many bilingual teachers leave to find

employment in other states that pay more. New Mexico’s public school system consistently ranks at the bottom among states, and was found by the courts to be “constitutionally negligent” in providing adequate funding, in a ruling on the Yazzie-Martinez lawsuit. After the lawsuit, the New Mexico Legislature in 2019 appropriated an additional almost $500 million for the state’s Public Education Department - money largely available due to the state’s booming oil and gas industry. Parr-Sanchez said the oil and gas windfall was a boost, but noted it may not last. “I feel an urgency that we get different funding streams, because oil and gas is a ‘boom-and-bust’ economy, and we can’t run our schools in that kind of funding situation,” she said.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has said she hopes to get $35 million approved this legislative session to offer students free in-state college tuition. (LeoFontes/Pixabay) A new funding measure, House Bill 83, has already been filed for the upcoming legislative session, which

begins January 17. The governor has said she plans to prioritize the bill, which would appropriate $320 million from

the state’s General Fund to start a new Early Childhood Education and Care Fund.

Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams team up to win first doubles match

By Desert Star Staff Former world number one players Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki have begun their 2020 seasons in

style, teaming up to win their first doubles match at the ASB Classic in Auckland. The newly emerged doubles pair, who have never

played together before, cruised to a confident 6-2,64 victory against Japanese opponents Nao Hibino and Makoto Ninomiya.

Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam titles, hasn’t played doubles with anyone other than her sister Venus since 2015. She proved that she is in excellent physical shape, however, astounding her Japanese rivals with her trademark powerful serves. Prominent Danish player Wozniacki, who announced her plans to retire following the conclusion of seasonopening Grand Slam the Australian Open, said she was happy to share the court with her friend Williams. Round 1 doubles victory with my bff, can you tell we had fun — Caroline Wozniacki “It’s amazing to be able to share the court with Serena,” Wozniacki said. “Every time I missed, she was like: ‘You

did a great job!’ I’m hard on myself so I was like: ‘I need to play with you all the time!’” “It doesn’t seem like she hasn’t played in a long time because she played unbelievably,” Williams said. It was a straight sets victory as Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki teamed up for the first time. “It’s cool. I can’t let the rest of both of our amazing careers go without playing with her. With her doing so well as a Grand Slam champion and a long-time No. 1 for so long, of course I want to share the court with her.” Both players will also take part in singles matches, with top-seeded Williams taking on Camilia Giorgi of Italy and Wozniacki playing New Zealand wildcard Paige Hourigan.

Oil rallies & gold hits 7-year high as tensions flare in the Middle East By Desert Star Staff The escalating situation in the region following the assassination of a top Iranian military commander has given the yellow metal its highest rates in nearly seven years and raised oil to prices last seen in mid-2019. Gold, which is considered a safe-haven investment amid political and economic turmoil, gained around 1.5 percent on Monday. At one point, the precious metal hit $1,579.55 per ounce, the highest price since April 2013. As of 08:07am GMT, it was already down to $1,571.95 per ounce - still around 1.3 percent more than in the previous session. Rising US-Iran tensions could further boost gold prices, according to Goldman Sachs’

DesertSTAR

projections. “All in all, we stick with our three, six and 12-month forecast of $1,600/ toz (per troy ounce) but see upside risks if geopolitical tensions worsen,” its strategist said in a note Monday. Another precious metal, palladium, also rallied on Monday as it reached a record price of $2,011.48 an ounce, according to Reuters. Crude prices have been on the rise since the news broke of Qassem Soleimani’s death in a US airstrike in Baghdad last week. Oil experienced further gains on Monday amid fears that a conflict in the Middle East could disrupt global oil supplies. The US benchmark was up 2 percent, trading at $64.32 per barrel - its highest level

since April. Futures of global benchmark Brent climbed more than 2.3 percent and topped $70 per barrel, reaching a peak not seen since May. The last time both Brent and WTI posted such substantial gains was in September when an attack on energy giant Saudi Aramco’s infrastructure temporarily halved the kingdom’s oil production. Washington and Tehran traded threats over the weekend, with US President Donald Trump vowing to respond in a “disproportionate manner” should Iran “strike any US person or target.” He also said that the US could strike 52 Iranian targets, including cultural sites, should Iran attempt to revenge for Soleimani’s assassination. Kirk Cousins fires back at critics after Minnesota Vikings stun New Orleans

By Desert Star Staff Despite being written off as a quarterback who never delivered on the big occasion, Minnesota Vikings star Kirk Cousins led his unfancied side to a 26-20 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints in the NFL Wild Card Playoffs. Cousins made the decisive move in overtime as he drove the Vikings downfield and hit star wide receiver Adam Thielen with a huge 43yard pass to set up the gamewinning touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Rudolph. Cousins completed 19 of 31 passes for 242 yards and the crucial overtime touchdown, but the doubters were out in force after the Vikings let a 20-10 lead slip, like New Orleans, spurred on by a raucous home crowd, battled back to take the game into overtime.

Cousins goes deep to Thielen for a gain of 43 yards! But with the stakes at their highest, and with the spotlight firmly on the much-maligned Cousins, the Vikings rallied to claim the overtime victory and power into the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs. After the game, Rudolph paid tribute to his teammates – and his oft-criticized quarterback – saying: “Nobody gave us a chance to win here today except everybody in our organization. “They (the Saints) brought all pressure, and Kirk made a great throw. I’m proud of Kirk, blocking out the noise and coming down here and playing huge all game.” And former Washington Redskins quarterback Cousins, whose famous backstage roar at a reporter: “You like that?!” was one of

the most notable moments during his time in the U.S. capital, reprised the moment during his locker-room speech after the win. “That’s how we’ve won

all year – team!” he told his elated teammates after the game, before saying: “I’ve got three words for you: You like that?!” “I got 3 words for you:

YOU LIKE THAT!?”Gotta — FOX Sports The Vikings will now move on to face the NFC’s numberone seed, the San Francisco 49ers, in the divisional round.

FBI conducted record number of gun sale background checks

By Desert Star Staff The FBI carried out a record 28 million background checks on firearms purchases in 2019, as Americans rushed to buy weapons amid calls for tougher gun laws. According to FBI data,

28,369,750 background checks were performed in 2019, smashing the previous record of 27 million in 2016. The agency ran 202,465 checks on Black Friday alone. The Christmas period was a festive one for firearms

does not directly correlate with weapons sales, the FBI cautioned. Some states, for example, carry out checks for concealed-carry permits, for example, and the figures don’t account for multiple weapons purchased at once. Nevertheless, it is the most reliable indicator of nationwide gun sales that exists. Firearms sales typically spike when gun owners feel like their Second Amendment rights are threatened. Though President Trump has been a vocal proponent of gun rights, his opponents spent 2019 pushing the opposite message. Every Democratic candidate for next year’s election has promised to restrict gun rights in some retailers, with just under three manner, with Texas Rep. million checks carried out in Beto O’Rourke proposing December, the second-highest a mass confiscation of month since the National AR- and AK-style rifles in Instant Criminal Background September, shortly before Check System began in 1998. dropping out of the race. The number of O’Rourke’s fellow background checks performed Democrats, Joe Biden

and Kamala Harris, then announced that they too would introduce their own mandatory buyback schemes. The following month saw the third-highest number of checks in the whole year. “Americans are choosing to invest their hard-earned dollars in their ability to exercise their rights and buy the firearms they want before gun control politicians attempt to regulate away that ability,” a spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation told the Associated Press in December. Though violent crime has decreased by more than 50 percent since the early 1990s, mass shootings continue to make gun control a headline issue in the US. Last year saw a number of high-profile slayings, including two shootings in Texas in August that left 30 people dead, a massacre in Virginia Beach that killed 13, and a bloodbath at a nightclub in Dayton, Ohio, that killed nine.

Gov. Gordon Tackles Electric Vehicle Grid for Mountain States By Desert Star Staff JACKSON, Wyo. Wyoming and other western mountain states are pressing ahead with a joint effort to deploy electric vehicle charging stations along interstate corridors and state highways. Alicia Cox, executive director of the YellowstoneTeton Clean Cities Coalition, says rural states such as Wyoming face unique challenges where people can travel hundreds of miles without reaching a city with charging stations. “And so it’s really valuable

www.desertstarweekly.com

and important that these states are all working together to ensure that we’re going to have stations deployed at the distance that we need them to allow for people to move throughout our region on all electric,” she states. Gov. Mark Gordon recently signed a memorandum of understanding to advance the infrastructure project, joining governors from Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. The goal is to bring in a mix of public and private investors to make it possible

for electric vehicles to travel seamlessly both within and among mountain states. Cox says what began as a high-end consumer market, with first adopters buying high-priced Teslas, will continue to become more mainstream. She says the trend across the automotive industry shows that electric vehicles are here to stay. More popular pickup trucks and SUV electrics are headed to market, and some manufacturers already have switched to electric for all new models. January 8, 2020

“So we know that’s where the industry is going,” she states. “And so eventually, everyone is going to benefit from the infrastructure that’s getting in place now.” Cox says the multistate partnership will not only improve air quality by

eliminating tailpipe pollution, the project should also boost local economies by ensuring that visitors continue to make Wyoming, with its national parks and recreation areas, a vacation destination for years to come.

Buttigieg in NH: Trump Targets on Iran Won’t Deter Regime

Former Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind. is currently in fourth place in the latest national Democratic Party primary opinion polls. (Kevin Bowe/Public News Service) By Desert Star Staff WOLFEBORO, N.H. -- At a weekend campaign event in Wolfeboro, Democratic Party presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg said President Donald Trump’s mention of having Iranian targets already

picked out probably won’t prevent military conflict. On Saturday, Trump noted on Twitter that the United States has targeted “52 Iranian sites” that could be hit if Iran strikes Americans or American assets in

response to the killing of Qasem Soleimani, a top Iranian general, in a U.S. airstrike. Buttigieg, who served as a military intelligence officer in Afghanistan, had some strong words about Trump’s latest tweet.

“In a culture of martyrdom, it seems unlikely that that’s much of a deterrent,” he said. “We’ve got to be smart. We’ve got to understand what we’re up against. And we’ve got to think through not just the immediate, but the second and third-order effects of anything that the United States does.” Buttigieg said Middle East tensions could easily reach a point that the U.S. can’t control. He said he’s concerned about what he terms a “low level of confidence in the strategic thinking of the current White House,” and thinks Congress needs to be consulted before actions of war. He did not comment on whether he agrees with the decision to kill Soleimani. Buttigieg also shared some insights from a year on the campaign trail in New Hampshire. He said the voters he’s meeting in this early primary state take their responsibility seriously

and inspire him not to pursue politics as usual. “I’m getting deep, searching questions about America’s role in the world, about how to unify a divided country, about how to make sure that we’re able to open up a new era that’s going to be better than the last one,” he said. “Not just how to beat this president, but replace him with something that’s going to lead this nation in the right direction. “It’s a very serious, very healthy conversation,” he added. “I’ve been really honored to be part of it.” Buttigieg said he supports nonpartisan redistricting, as well as getting rid of the Electoral College. While opinion polls show Buttigieg narrowly leading the Democratic primary race in New Hampshire, he has fallen behind in national polls. The New Hampshire primary is Feb. 11.

‘We are trying to prevent open war,’ Iraqi PM tells US ambassador

By Desert Star Staff Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi has told US ambassador Matthew Tueller that Baghdad is doing all it can to prevent “descent into open war” as tensions flare over the US killing of top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani. Speaking at a meeting with Tueller in the Iraqi capital on Monday, Abdul-Mahdi said his government’s policy has “always been to have relations with all sides.” He said Iraq wants to build its relations with other countries on “cooperation, mutual respect, and protection

of foreign sovereignty,” adding that a strong Iraqi government is in “everyone’s interest”in the region. The PM also “stressed the importance of mutual cooperation” on implementing foreign troop withdrawal, according to a statement released by his office. The meeting comes after US President Donald Trump warned Iraq that it should brace for “very big” sanctions “like they’ve never seen before.” That warning followed the passing of a non-binding resolution in the Iraqi parliament on Sunday asking the government to expel foreign

troops by canceling a request for military assistance from the US-led coalition. On Monday, Abdul-Mahdi said the US and Iraq must also work together to implement the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country. Trump has claimed the US will not leave Iraq unless Baghdad “pays it back” for the “extraordinarily expensive” air base which it built there. Tensions have mounted between Washington and Baghdad since the drone strike which killed Soleimani along with several Iraqi militia leaders last week, provoking rage in Tehran and the promise of revenge against the US.

2019 was year of most US mass murders ever – study

By Desert Star Staff Among the records the US set in 2019 was a sad and disturbing one. It was the

6

DesertSTAR

year with the most incidents of mass killing since media and scholars started keeping track, according to a new study.

There were 211 victims in 41 mass killings this year, according to the database maintained by the Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University in Boston. By their definition, a mass murder is any incident in which four or more people die, excluding the perpetrator. It is the largest number of mass killings since the two news organizations and the university started tracking them in 2006, when they recorded 38 incidents. They say “other research” going back to the 1970s shows no other year that can compare, either. “This seems to be the age of mass shootings,” James Densley, a criminologist and professor at Metropolitan State University in Minnesota, told AP. In 33 instances, firearms were the weapon of choice, January 8, 2020

followed by knives and axes. In two cases, the perpetrators set a mobile home on fire, killing the people inside. Nine of the mass killings happened in a public place. Most of the incidents involved people who knew each other, either as family members or coworkers, and drug and gang violence. Nearly half of US states experienced a mass killing, including big cities like New York City (population: 8.4 million) and small towns like Elkmont, Alabama (population: 470). Though it has the strictest gun laws in the country, California led the count with eight. The deadliest incident happened in August, when 21-year-old Patrick Crusius shot and killed 22 people inside an El Paso, Texas Walmart.

He said he wanted to kill as many “Mexicans” as possible, according to his confession. The Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a group tracking all firearm injuries and deaths, has put the number of 2019 mass murders at 30 and mass shootings at 404; however, its methodology tracks incidents in which no one was killed, so the figures do not lend themselves to easy comparison. One small bit of silver lining is that while the number of incidents in 2019 was the highest, 2017 has held on to the record for the number of victims: 224 people lost their lives in mass killings that year, including 58 in the Las Vegas country concert massacre. Stephen Paddock’s motive for targeting the event remains a mystery to this day. www.desertstarweekly.com

Resolve to Make Real Nutrition a New Year Priority

By Desert Star Staff A new year signals a chance to renew your commitment to healthier eating, but many of the most popular diets, like the keto diet and paleo diet, eliminate entire food groups, which can cause you to fall short on nutrients you need. For example, a study in the “Journal of Clinical Lipidology” suggests low-carb diets may not have meaningful long-term benefits for weight or heart health compared to other diets and could actually restrict foods that are good for your heart. This new year, instead of jumping on restrictive diet bandwagons, focus instead on consuming real, wholesome foods you can still enjoy, like dairy milk, that deliver benefits backed by decades of research. Consider these tips for incorporating nutrient-rich foods into a few trending diets to make them work for you. Intermittent Fasting: Skipping meals could do more harm than good if you’re not getting the nutrients you need to be your best. A better bet: balanced, flavorful meals that

incorporate multiple food groups. If you really want to try intermittent fasting, consider not eating past a certain time in the evening so you can “fast” throughout the night, and make sure to eat a nourishing breakfast in the morning, like oatmeal made with real milk, topped with fruit and a handful of nuts. Plant-Packed Plates: If you’re considering a vegetarian or plant-based diet in the new year, it’s important to pack the right nutrients into your meatless meals, particularly protein, calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B12. Make sure you’re getting enough by enjoying a variety of plantbased foods like beans, nuts, fruits and vegetables along with some other thoughtfully chosen options. Real dairy milk is a good choice in a vegetarian diet, providing as much as eight times more protein than many non-dairy milk alternatives. Each 8-ounce glass is also a source of vitamin D, and an excellent source of calcium and vitamin B12. Focus On Fats: If you’re keeping closer tabs on your fat intake, it’s important to choose

Photo courtesy of Getty Images the right ones and know that a growing body of evidence suggests not all saturated fats are the same. For example, whole milk, which has more dairy fat than skim or low-fat varieties, may actually help raise “good” cholesterol and could be considered part of a diet that’s also good for your heart, according to research in the “European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”

Calorie Conscious: Monitoring the calories you consume versus the calories you burn through exercise and everyday activity can help manage the fuel your body needs. When you consistently burn more calories than you eat, you are more likely to effectively lose weight. However, that doesn’t mean you have to forgo all your favorite foods. For example,

when it comes to dairy, swapping full-fat options for skim or low-fat alternatives is one way to receive the same nutrient package with less fat and calories. Make better nutritional balance a priority this new year and find more advice and recipes at MilkLife. com. Family Features

might be even more powerful than previously thought, according to the team. The new research, conducted by German and Greek scientists and published in Science, centers on signals sent and received by the ends of neurons, known as ‘dendrites.’ The information passed by these parts of the brain is key to how the organ decides subsequent actions. Working with slices of human brain tissue, the team found unexpectedly complex electrical activity in the dendrites of human pyramidal neurons. Modeling this activity then showed that single neurons were capable of solving computational problems which were thought to need

a lot more brain power. “The dendrites are central to understanding the brain because they are at the core of what determines the computational power of single neurons,”said study co-author Matthew Larkum, a neuroscientist at Humboldt University of Berlin. “There was a ‘eureka’ moment when we saw the dendritic action potentials for the first time.” Little is currently known about how dendrites operate in other species, or if this kind of high-computational activity is uniquely human. However, it’s incredibly difficult to record dendrite activity in humans or animals while they’re alive, and Larkum says more research is needed to fill in these blanks.

US to hit ‘actual decision-makers’ behind attacks on American targets

By Desert Star Staff Washington has apparently decided to further raise the stakes in the already potentially explosive conflict with Iran, with Mike Pompeo saying the US will continue to target the “masterminds” plotting attacks against Americans. The US will continue to “respond with lawful strikes” targeting “actual decisionmakers” if it perceives a danger to any American targets, the secretary of state said. The remarks came as he continued to defend the www.desertstarweekly.com

assassination of Iranian Quds Force commander Major General Qassem Soleimani, which was ordered by President Donald Trump. Pompeo maintained that Washington had “all the authority” to do what it had done, but added that the White House would keep Congress informed about developments in the Middle East from now on. His view on the “legality” of the American strikes on Iraqi soil was clearly not shared by Baghdad, which even filed a formal complaint about the incident

with the UN secretary-general and the UN Security Council. He also argued that the killing of Soleimani, which sent shockwaves across both Iran and Iraq, with thousands of people hitting the streets to mourn the slain general and condemn the measures taken by the US, was still the best course of action. “The intelligence assessment made clear that no action - allowing Soleimani to continue his plotting and his planning, his terror campaign created more risk than taking the action that we took last January 8, 2020

week,” the state secretary told ABC’s ‘This Week.’ In an apparent attempt to calm things down a bit, Pompeo also said that he had “no doubt” the Iranian leadership “understands” Trump’s view of the situation and “gets the message clearly.” So far, however, the attack has only raised hostilities between Washington and Tehran to a whole new level. Iran called the American strike “an act of international terrorism” and vowed revenge. Both sides are now

trading threats, with a senior commander of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards Corps claiming that up to 35 “vital” US and Israeli targets are within Iran’s reach. At the same time, Trump threatened to strike 52 Iranian sites should Tehran follow up on its revenge plans - adding later that “brand new” American military hardware worth trillions of dollars would head Iran’s way in the event of retaliatory action.

You experience joy. Take care of yourself.

Trump threatens Iraq with ‘very big sanctions’ By Desert Star Staff Iraq should brace for sanctions that will make the ones placed on Iran look weak in comparison if it kicks out the US troops without first covering the costs for an airbase, US President Donald Trump said. “We have a very extraordinarily expensive air base that’s there. It cost billions of dollars to build, long before my time. We’re not leaving unless they pay us back for it,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday. The punitive measures that the US is ready to slap on its supposed ally in the fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) will be even harsher than the crippling sanctions already in effect against Tehran, the president said. “If they do ask us to leave, if we don’t do it in a very friendly basis, we will charge them sanctions like they’ve

It’ll make Iranian sanctions look somewhat tame.” Trump’s warning to Iraq comes after Iraqi MPs passed a non-binding resolution, championed by the country’s caretaker prime minister, asking the Iraqi government to expel foreign troops by cancelling a request for military assistance from the US-led coalition. The resolution, adopted earlier on Sunday, envisions that some foreign troops might stay in Iraq for training purposes, but the number of foreign instructors deemed necessary should be reported back by the Iraqi authorities. ‘We are not allowed to touch Iran’s cultural sites? It doesn’t work that way’ Trump also doubled down on his threat to wipe out Iranian cultural sites in retaliation for potential future attacks from Tehran, which has vowed to avenge the assassination

of its top general, Qassem Soleimani, by the US. Accusing Iran of “torturing” and “maiming” American soldiers in suicide attacks and by planting roadside bombs, Trump hinted that attacks on US troops justify potential war crimes – the destruction of a nation’s cultural heritage. “They’re allowed to kill our people. They’re allowed to torture and maim our people. They’re allowed to use roadside bombs and blow up our people. And we’re not allowed to touch their cultural sites? It doesn’t work that way.” Trump’s statement on Saturday that the US might fire upon 52 sites that are important to Iran’s people and culture has courted controversy in the US, with many of the Trump administration’s critics noting that Washington would mimic the methods of its declared adversary, Islamic January 8, 2020

Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce Are “The Two Popes”

You don’t have to be Catholic to be charmed by Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce in “The Two Popes,” a film about Pope Benedict XVI and the current pope Francis. And while the film deals with conversations between the two clerics, revealing parts of their lives they regret or wish were different, it is also sprinkled with humor and warm memories of their years of service in the priesthood. On the sunny side, during a visit with the pope in Rome Francis watches one of Benedict’s favorite TV shows, the Austrian “Kommissar Rex,” about a crime solving dog. Later Francis introduces Benedict to the joys of watching soccer matches on TV. Benedict soon becomes a fan of the sport and even is delighted when Germany defeats Argentina in a match. Such is not the case for Francis, who is devastated when his team loses. As written by Anthony McCarten (“The Theory of Everything,” “Darkest Hour” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”) we watch a friendship

develop between these two men of God who served Him in different ways. The film begins in Vatican City as 115 cardinals come together to elect a new pope after the death of John Paul II. The eventual choice is German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Hopkins). It is obvious that Argentine Cardinal Bergoglio (Pryce) doesn’t want to be considered as a potential candidate and after the choice is made he returns home to Argentina. At this point the film goes back in time. Francis is young, in love and eager to get married. However things change dramatically following a serious conversation he has with a priest during confession. Whatever was said convinces him to devote his life to God as a priest. As time goes by, he is loved by his congregation and the priests who serve under him, but things change for everyone when Argentina becomes embroiled in a “dirty war” that endangers the lives of its people. Unfortunately, out of fear Frances does not stand

An early look at Coachella 2020

A huge crowd took in Two Door Cinema Club’s set at Coachella in April 2017. Photo: Greg Noire courtesy of Goldenvoice Continued from Page 1 based quartet Chicano Batman makes an eagerlyawaited return to the event, having last performed in Indio both weekends in 2017. While Coachella emerged in October 1999 featuring mostly modern and alternative rock artists, the festival has grown into a significant showcase of seemingly all genres of music including Americana, world music, funk, neo-soul, EDM, urban, art

rock, dream pop, and Latin. One of the most exciting artists slated to perform this year is famed film composer Danny Elfman, who rose to fame in the late 1970s and ‘80s as the leader of genre-defying rock group Oingo Boingo. In fact, Oingo Boingo was a featured artist at the US Festival on May 28, 1983; the US Festival held at Glen Helen Regional Park near Devore, San Bernardino, was a forerunner of Coachella (staged by Apple

co-founder Steve Wozniak and concert promoter Bill Graham in 1982 and 1983). Elfman’s unique approach with Oingo Boingo was not lost on Hollywood – and since scoring “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” in 1985 – he has gone on to score more than 100 feature films including “Batman,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Spider-Man,” “Edward Scissorhands” and “Good Will Hunting.” His greatest achievement may well be the songs and

score for the Tim Burtonproduced 1993 animated masterpiece “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” In a January 2 post on Twitter, Elfman noted: “Past, Present, and Future! From Boingo to Batman and Beyond!” hinting at a set that will genuinely surprise. With Elfman having retired

PSIFF World Premiere, Stage Mother, 2020

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs International Film Festival, PSIFF, holds many world premiere film showings. On Saturday, January 4th, they kept the World Premiere movie, Stage Mother. Artistic Director Lili Rodriguez spoke to a theatre filled audience about how excited she was to get this film here at PSIFF. The Director said he was thrilled that his movie was being shown here and hoped everyone would love the film and give it a high rating for the final PSIFF awards. Sometimes the directors, producers, or actors arrive to promote the film. This was the case for Stage Mother as so many of the films creators were on

hand to walk the Red Carpet. Actress Jacki Weaver who plays the mother, does a fantastic job as does actors Oscar Moreno and Allister MacDonald. They were present along with the Director, Thom Fitzgerald, writer/producer Brad Hennig and Producer J. Todd Harris and Executive Producer Clay Epstein. World Premieres are a big event for any filmmaker, and to have it shown at a major festival is exciting. Local Drag Queens also came to the Red Carpet in their costumes to promote this movie, which is mainly about Drag Queens and a Baptist mother who inherits her sons Drag Bar. Queens, Bella da Ball, Marina Mac, and Anita Rose posed for

photos before the film. Guests seemed to love the movie as there were screams, clapping, and yelling at the end when film credits rolled. There was an afterparty at The Saguaro hotel. All ticket holders were allowed at this party. Guests were entertained by two pianists/singers that had them tapping their toes to the music. Drag Queen Sabryna

Williams also was part of the whole entertainment event at this afterparty. Guests were treated to several appetizers and free refreshments at the bar. Movie buffs were able to mingle with the stars of the film and other filmmakers. After parties are a fun part of the PSIFF as it gets people together to discuss the films they saw and liked or didn’t

We’re saved! Golden Globes serving plant-based meals By Desert Star Staff The Golden Globes will be serving its first exclusively vegan menu at its ceremony on Sunday night, and many are wondering if it’s another empty, virtue-signaling move from the limousine and private jet loving stars. The goal of serving an en vogue meatless menu to guests before the televised ceremony is to “send a signal” about the potential dangers of climate change. “If there’s a way we can, not change the world, but save the planet, maybe we can get the Golden Globes to send a signal and draw attention to the issue about climate change,” Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Lorenzo Soria said in a statement. “The food we eat, the way we grow the food we eat, the way we dispose of the food is one of the large contributors to the climate crisis.” Entree items include king oyster mushrooms scallops and wild mushroom risotto. Brussel sprouts and carrots will also be served, and a golden beet soup will be the evening’s appetizer. There is no official word on whether the food was produced locally or what was used to deliver it. Still, Matthew Morgan, executive chef at The Beverly Hilton, which is where the ceremony takes place, said the dishes were already mostly available. They were vegan options in the past, and Morgan enhanced the recipes for the new, slimmer menu. Bets begin on when zoo’s beloved tortoise will predict spring’s arrival

By Martín Di Felice A 42-year-old desert tortoise celebrated for her season-changing perception is likely to soon emerge from her winter’s nap at the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Desert, and students from schools throughout the region Monday were invited to submit their predictions on when that might happen. “Mojave Maxine is a great ambassador for The Living Desert, and each year she helps educate countless people as to the peril of the threatened desert tortoise,” said James Danoff-Burg,

www.desertstarweekly.com

director of conservation for the zoo. “This annual contest is a fun way to get students involved, and it gives them the opportunity to learn how to help protect this species.” Last winter, Maxine poked her head out of her burrow on the morning of Jan. 29. According to the zoo, she went underground to begin her “brumation” – – hibernation for reptiles — this season the week of Thanksgiving. “Tortoises’ bodies know when to go to sleep based on the outside temperatures and the change in daylight hours,”

according to a zoo statement. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade from Riverside, San Bernardino, Imperial and six other Southern California counties are welcome to submit entries on when they believe Maxine will make her 2020 debut. Anyone guessing the exact date and time correctly will receive a $50 gift certificate and a classroom visit by Maxine and her handlers, according to the zoo. The teacher in the winning class will additionally receive a $100 gift certificate

and “Mojave Maxine” T-shirts to distribute to students. A live video feed will soon be available, streaming images of Maxine’s burrow.

New app for Walk of the Stars

By Desert Star Staff The new app is a multifunctional and interactive alternative to a printed map. It is an up-to-date resource for Walk of the Stars honorees that also features opt-in enduser notifications for upcoming star dedications. The Walk of Stars app features biographical information, star address, honoree photo, and links to websites like IMDb and Wikipedia for all 437 stars honored to date by Walk of the Stars since the program began in February 1992. Honorees since 2019 will also have video clips from their Walk of the Stars dedication ceremony. “The City of Palm Springs would like to thank our Chamber of Commerce for their innovative leadership developing this outstanding new app for Walk of the Stars,” said Mayor Geoff Kors. “I downloaded it myself, and it’s an incredibly user-friendly tool for residents and visitors looking to locate their favorite stars in downtown. I encourage everyone to check it out.” To provide end-users the

ability to visually locate a star with ease, Google Maps is integrated into the app and uses the end user’s GPS location to provide directions to the star. Additionally, the Walk of Stars app features Walk of the Stars and Pop Trivia. Several trivia questions related to Walk of the Stars honorees makes the app a fun source for local and visiting pop trivia game players. The Local Deals feature provides valuable coupons, deals, and discounts for uniquely Palm Springs businesses, restaurants, and attractions exclusively for Walk of Stars end users. End users can even build and share to social media their very own star using a replica of the Walk of the Stars monument. The additional features make the app useful as a handy visitor resource that also promotes local small businesses, especially those located near stars within a 2-mile span currently ranging from 1301 North Palm Canyon in the fashionable Uptown Design District to 415 South Palm Canyon in the Historic

Tennis Gardens district. “Walk of the Stars has become a “uniquely Palm Springs” tourist attraction that visitors find fun and fascinating,” said Mary Jo Ginther, director of the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism. “The new app is a fantastic way to help promote a special attraction that truly is a part of the magic that makes Palm Springs like no place else.” The Walk of Stars app project began in late 2018 with the developer of the

Hollywood Walk of Fame app. “As impressed as we were with Walk of Fame’s app function as a map to the stars, we wanted our app to also have the Palm Springs aesthetic, which is sunny and modern. After considering several ideas for the Walk of Stars app design, we finally found the look and feel that fit that objective,” said Nona Watson, Palm Springs Chamber CEO. iPhone users can download the Walk of Stars app for free from iTunes and

the App Store now. A version of the app for Android users is currently in the works. For more information regarding Walk of the Stars Palm Springs or the Walk of Stars app, contact Jeff Denean Jones at jjones@ pschamber.org. Since 1992, Walk of the Stars has honored 437 famous celebrities & local personalities on one of the world’s most famous sidewalks.

City of Riverside utility will reduce paid wait time By Desert Star Staff To help the City of Riverside, Calif., Public Utilities efficiently respond to, restore and report on after-hours electric and water service emergencies, ARCOS LLC, the market leader for utility and critical infrastructure resource-management solutions, will implement its Resource Management software during the first quarter of 2020, replacing the city’s paper-based process for managing utility workers. By relying on paper lists, phone calls, and emails to determine the availability of crew members for restoration work, RPU crew callouts average one hour per event. RPU’s on-call troubleshooters are the first to arrive in an afterhours emergency. But, if a troubleshooter at an after-hours situation needs a crew, then

RPU manually calls workers to build a crew with the right skills and seniority. With conditions like broken water lines, the delay tied to a manual callout only adds to potential safety and liability issues. With the ARCOS platform, RPU’s Grid Control Center can electronically contact and confirm the availability of workers in minutes, which reduces the time employees are paid to wait while RPU assembles a crew. “ARCOS will not only reduce our paid wait time but also safely speed up our ability to respond to and restore customers during significant electric and water events,” said Richard de Aragon Jr., Electric Operations manager for RPU. “We’ve calculated that with ARCOS each year, we can save $113,900 in paid wait time, and recover $2,500

in customer meter revenue.” By implementing the ARCOS SaaS solution across RPU, the utility will save its Grid Control Center from gathering crew data, including a lineman or substation electrician’s availability and skill set. The ARCOS system will also automatically track and account for overtime, which eliminates a manual callout system prone to errors and grievances. “The ARCOS solution is a game-changer for us because it logs and records what’s happened, so we electronically see the result of every callout and automatically follow complex business rules related to how our utility and union want to build crews,” adds de Aragon. “For the members of our union, we expect a more equitable distribution of overtime.”

Lawmakers to Try Again on Controversial Shotgun Restrictions

By Desert Star Staff When the Maryland General Assembly starts on Wednesday, a gun bill that didn’t pass last year’s session will be one of the top priorities for gun-control advocates in the new session. House Bill 4 would close a dangerous gap in state law that allows Marylanders to privately sell shotguns and rifles, also known as “long guns,” without a background check. According to Bridget

14

DesertSTAR

McCullough, Maryland state campaign lead with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the loophole makes it easy for people convicted of violent crimes, who can’t legally own guns, to get their hands on a shotgun. “Right now, we have background checks on every other type of gun or from a licensed dealer,” McCullough said. “And so to ensure that Marylanders stay safe, these background checks are the most effective way to

keep guns out of the hands of those who are legally prohibited from having them.” Opponents of the bill, including hunters, say long guns are rarely used in homicides and enforcing restrictions on them makes it more difficult for law-abiding gun owners to possess and transfer their private property. McCullough said Maryland is known for having some of the toughest gun-control laws in the United States and argued the state needs January 8, 2020

to adopt new measures to remain a leader on the issue. Despite this, gun lobbyists fought hard against the longgun bill when it was proposed last year. The original bill had more restrictions on shotgun and rifle purchases, including fingerprinting, and it caused heated debates during the General Assembly. “It would have required some training and a fingerprinting and a licensing piece too, which would be similar to

the handgun qualification license that’s currently required,” McCullough said. She said she thinks the stripped-down version of the bill, which just requires background checks, stands a better chance of passing. Giffords Law Center has ranked Maryland fourth in the nation for strong gun laws, behind California, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Consumers Aren’t Adequately Prepared for a Natural Disaster

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES, Calif.– Despite the frequency of wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural disasters ravaging the U.S., a recent survey conducted by Mercury Insurance (NYSE: MCY) revealed that fewer than half (45%) of the respondents are prepared if one happens where they live. “It’s a bit alarming to discover that, although natural disasters are in the news on a seemingly regular basis, many Americans still aren’t properly preparing themselves if one happens in their neighborhood or city,” said Christopher O’Rourke, vice president of property claims at Mercury Insurance. “These events can have serious repercussions and adopting a wait-and-see attitude should not be an option.” Mercury surveyed nearly 2,000 respondents to gauge their level of preparedness, including if they have created and practice an evacuation plan, have adequate insurance coverage if their property were

to be damaged or destroyed in a disaster, keep an inventory of their belongings in case they need to be replaced, and keep a stocked emergency kit. Seventy-seven percent of the quiz-takers either don’t have a plan or don’t regularly practice it if they do. Additionally, 39% are unsure if they have enough insurance to rebuild if their home is damaged or destroyed by a natural disaster, 34% don’t have a home inventory, and 13% didn’t realize their insurance policy covers their personal belongings. The vast majority (88%) of respondents, however, do have an emergency kit in their home. Only 9% of respondents rated as “extremely prepared” after completing the nine-question quiz. O’Rourke has the following recommendations to help consumers prepare for a natural disaster. • Create an evacuation plan. Know where family members will meet if instructed to evacuate, as well as several options to get out of the city in case routes are blocked.

Establish a meeting point ahead of time. Staying with friends or family who live outside of the local area is a good option, but you should also research hotels and shelters. • Stock an emergency kit. If you are unable to stay with family or friends out of town, or you were unable to evacuate, be sure to keep the following items handy: o A three-day supply of water (one gallon per person),

non-perishable food items and pet food, if applicable; o A battery-powered or hand-crank radio (and extra batteries); o A flashlight; o A first aid kit; o A whistle to signal for help; o A can opener; o Blankets; o Tools to turn off utilities; o $200 in cash in small bills, as power may

be out, making ATMs, debit and credit cards unusable; o Fully charged battery packs so you can recharge your cell phone; and o Prescriptions for you and your pets. • Review your insurance policy. Discuss your coverage needs with your agent at least once a year to ensure you have enough to protect your property and belongings.

Epstein autopsy photos add to murder speculation

By Desert Star Staff Graphic new photos of Jeffrey Epstein’s autopsy have again raised doubt that the wealthy pedophile killed himself inside a New York prison. According to one coroner, Epstein’s injuries are consistent with murder. Photos shown on CBS’ 60 Minutes on Sunday show the inside of Epstein’s cell, following his death in August. In them, multiple bedsheets have been fashioned into two nooses. A note on the sex offender’s bed gripes about the conditions at New York’s Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC). 60 Minutes reviewed hundreds of graphic photographs from the autopsy of Jeffrey Epstein and inside his cell. Here are the known facts. Photos of Epstein’s body show a thin, bloody line across the middle of his throat. According to former New York City Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Baden, who observed the autopsy,

the wound is more consistent with murder than suicide. “This noose doesn’t match the ligature furrow mark. It’s wider than this,” Baden told 60 Minutes. “Most hangings, especially free hangings, the ligature slides up to beneath the jawbone, the mandible. Here it’s in the middle of the neck.” Epstein’s neck was fractured in multiple places, including the hyoid, a small bone near Adam’s apple. “I have never seen three fractures like this in a suicidal hanging,” Baden said, adding, “Going over a thousand jail hangings, suicides, in the New York State prisons over the past 40, 50 years, no one had three fractures.” His injuries also included bruised wrists, an abrasion on the arm, a muscle injury to the shoulder, an injury to the back of the neck, and a cut on the lip. However, it is unclear if any of these injuries were inflicted by hospital staff trying to resuscitate Epstein.

“I have never seen three fractures like this in a suicidal hanging.” Dr. Michael Baden lays out the forensic reasons why he’s skeptical of the medical examiner’s ruling that Jeffrey Epstein killed himself. New York’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Barbara Sampson, ruled Epstein’s death a suicide in August and stands by that decision. However, that ruling did little to quiet speculation that the billionaire sex offender was murdered. Epstein’s connections to the rich and powerful – including Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and British Prince Andrew – would likely have been brought up during his trial, leading some to believe that these people had a strong motive to silence Epstein. Epstein had pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing and trafficking multiple girls as young as 14. Back in 2008, a sweetheart deal with Florida prosecutors saw Epstein skate on similar charges, January 8, 2020

serving just 13 months in a minimum-security facility. Speculation was further stoked when it was revealed that security cameras at the MCC allegedly malfunctioned on the night of Epstein’s death. Also, two prison guards who were supposed to check in on the high-profile prisoner every 30 minutes have been charged with conspiracy and falsifying records, after it emerged that they slept through their shift on the night. Only one prisoner at MCC, Philadelphia mobster Louis Turra, has successfully

committed suicide in the last 40 years. Judge Richard Berman, who presided over Epstein’s sex trafficking case, said in November that it was “unthinkable” that an inmate as high profile as Epstein could die behind bars without guards noticing. Epstein was the only defendant in his case. With his death, the case is shut, and the alleged victims denied closure. However, some of the alleged victims still carry on with civil claims against the deceased pedophile’s estate.

PSIFF 2020 Red Carpet Gala

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 31st Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival started off the 2020 new year with its usual bang with dozens of celebrities. The Awards Gala starts off the Palm Springs International Film Festival, PSIFF, which brings in films from all over the world and lasts for almost 2 weeks. This is the Coachella Valleys’ most anticipated event every year. Movie buffs come from far and wide for this festival, which has grown to be one of the biggest in the U.S. Fans gather across the street to maybe get an autograph, shake a celebs hand or get a photo. Celebrities arrive in their limos to the screams and shouts of the fans in the hope they will come across the street to them before heading to the TV crews for interviews and before they walk the Red Carpet filled with photographers and TV cameras and more interviewers. The list of Celebrity honorees brings some of the top names in the film industry to the Desert. These actors and actresses deserve these awards and accolades for their works. They would not be where they are without Directors, Producers, Screen Writers, PR companies, and the list goes on and on, and especially their fans. Each year the PSIFF chooses some artists from each category to honor. The PSIFF staff has a good record of picking people that go on to win Oscars and other awards in the coming year. Television icon Mary Hart was again the emcee this year,17 years in a row. PSIFF Chairman Harold Matzner spoke to the gala guests and told them the gala had raised almost 2.3 million dollars. Over 2500 people filled the Palm Springs Convention Center. He honored the late James Houston for his dedication to the PSIFF and told how founder Sonny Bono would be pleased to see his dream of this festival grew into a world-famous event. He also thanked all the volunteers that make this such a massive success by stating that this ballroom was empty 48 hours before the gala and how they had turned it into this beautifully designed area for this one night. Volunteers are the backbone that helps make this festival so great. Underwriters also make this gala and celebration possible. It takes a village to make it all work. Being a photographer on the Red Carpet gives me a first-hand view of the actors as they walk in front of all the photographers. Joaquin Phoenix came with his mother. Jennifer Lopez, J-lo, arrived with her beau, Alex Rodriguez, A-Rod, to sports fans. A-Rod seemed to enjoy the event as he was busy taking photos of J-Lo in her gown as she posed along the Red Carpet. The dress Jennifer Lopez wore had a long train that always needed fixing www.desertstarweekly.com
