“The Champions” AOC wants victorious US women’s world cup team to be paid twice what male players get By Desert Star Staff Outspoken Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez congratulated the US women’s football team on their World Cup victory by calling for the players to be paid double the men’s rate. A penalty from Megan

Rapinoe followed by a goal from Rose Lavelle saw the US women’s team beat the Netherlands on Sunday to take home their fourth Women’s World Cup trophy. o sooner had the match ended than USA Today journalist Nancy Armour

reported fans chanting “Equal pay!,” a reference to the ongoing gender discrimination lawsuit filed by the team against the US Soccer Federation, claiming they are paid 38 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn. “At this point, we shouldn’t

even be asking for equal pay,” Ocasio-Cortez chimed in, possibly joking. “We should demand they be paid at least twice as much.” Demands for at least equal pay have echoed over social media throughout the France 2019 event. Democrat

World Cup hero Rapinoe doubles down on Trump White House snub The victorious US women’s soccer team will turn down any invitation to visit the White House, according to co-captain Megan Rapinoe, though she says they will take up an offer from Senate Democrats to visit Congress. Rapinoe, a prominent figure during the recent women’s World Cup for her performances on the pitch as well as a series of outspoken comments, repeated statements that emerged during the tournament in which she said that neither she nor her teammates have any

interest in being invited to visit Trump at the White House. It is customary in US sports for successful teams to be granted an audience with the president, though this appears to have changed during the Trump administration as several high-profile stars have refused to entertain the idea of visiting the head of state. “We don’t want to go to the White House, so I figure that’s why the invitation hasn’t come,” Rapinoe said to the media as the team landed in the US after defeating the Netherlands in the final.

“Maybe he sent it by mail and it’s just sort of, slow to get here.” However, Rapinoe offered a much more favorable response to a similar invitation from the Senate Minority Leader and fellow outspoken Trump critic, Chuck Schumer, telling him: “We’re very happy to accept your invitation to come.” Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, said that she had invited the team to the Capitol after heeding calls from “both sides of the aisle.” Continues on Page 2

politicians jumped aboard the bandwagon too, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanding equal pay following the victory on Sunday, and Hillary Clinton throwing in her two cents earlier on Friday. Continues on Page 2

Tanya Tucker New Album While I’m Livin’

By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tanya Tucker will play exclusive, select shows this fall celebrating the release of her new album, While I’m Livin’ (out August 23 via Fantasy Records). The intimate performances will be held August 22 at Exit/In in Nashville, September 17 at The Bowery Ballroom in New York (presented by SiriusXM), and

October 16 at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. Public on-sale starts Friday, July 12 at 10 a.m. local time, purchase tickets (including VIP packages). Tucker is enjoying a career renaissance with the release, her first album of all new material in 17 years—as well as the recent announcement that she will receive a star on The Hollywood Walk

of Fame next year. Nashville Scene proclaims Tucker’s new video for “Hard Luck,” with guest stars Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings, is a “raucous proclamation that she’s no less of a badass than when she got her start in the industry” while Rolling Stone lauds, “it’s Tucker who stands out as the star. Sporting neon-pink hair to match her comeback hot streak, she proves she’s still very much the outlaw.” While I’m Livin’ is mostly comprised of songs written by Carlile and the twins Tim and Phil Hanseroth. “It’s a musical biography of sorts,” explains Carlile, “about Tanya’s real life and the places she’s seen, and it’s narrated by the greatest country and western singer this side of Johnny Cash.” “The Day My Heart Goes Still” is a reflection of Tucker’s enduring love for her late father, while “Mustang Ridge” recalls her hardscrabble childhood in central Texas. While I’m Livin’ also contains some well-chosen covers including “High Ridin’ Heroes,” a 1987 song Jennings selected that featured David Lynn Jones and his dad, Waylon Jennings, “The House That Built Me,” a track made famous by Miranda Lambert, and the aforementioned “Hard Luck” by country-rockers Josefus. In many ways, the album’s cornerstone is “Bring My Flowers Now,” the only

tune that was co-written by Tucker, Carlile and the twins. The album closer told through Carlile’s solo piano, and Tucker’s plaintive vocal speaks to the importance of showing appreciation to those we love before it’s too late. Born in Seminole, Texas, Tucker had her first country hit, the classic “Delta Dawn,” at the age of 13 in 1972. Since that auspicious beginning, Tucker has become one of the most admired and influential artists in country music history, amassing 23 Top 40 albums and a stellar string of 56 Top 40 singles, ten of which reached the #1 spot on the Billboard country charts. Tucker’s

indelible songs include some of country music’s biggest hits such as the aforementioned “Delta Dawn,” “Soon,” “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane,” “It’s a Little Too Late,” “Trouble,” “Texas (When I Die),” “If It Don’t Come Easy” and “Strong Enough To Bend.” Tucker is also the recipient of numerous awards, including two CMAs, two ACMs, three CMT awards, and 10 GRAMMY nominations. NEW TOUR DATES:August 22 – Exit/In Nashville, Tenn. September 17 – SiriusXM Presents The Bowery Ballroom New York, N.Y.October 16 – The Troubadour Los Angeles, Calif.

Raising Financially Independent Children

By Janice Gough All parents want to give their kids the things they missed out on growing up. The most important education a parent can provide for their children is teaching them how to handle money. The changing times necessitates having excellent financial skills. There are studies which reveal a strong link between early financial education and future adult income. Generally, financially educated children become adults who are more successful and have greater wealth. They are three times more likely to

create an income of $75,000 or higher than those who did not learn about money in their formative years.

Most adults today report that they were not taught about money when they were children and the number one category, they wished they had learned early is “how to invest.” Luckily for future generations, parents are much more comfortable talking money with their children. What’s the best way to teach children about money? People who learned about money as a child reported their teachers used the triedand-true tools: allowance, a personal checking or savings account, and saving for specific purchases the most. While these top tools may not have changed much, the lessons have evolved. Today, Parents are teaching their children about using credit, charitable giving, and investing. The best guidance starts at home by setting a good example. If you show them financial responsibility, they will most likely adopt those rules in their lives. The right tools can make a big difference. If your child is a visual learner, consider a see-through jar for their savings so they can see their funds grow and shrink with

each deposit and withdrawal. If your youngster is a numbers whiz, an investing account might be just the thing. Most children today have an iPad in front of them a large part of the time. Installing a financial program for children will allow them to train themselves. Early training in categorizing money establishes patterns for future money-management behavior. This lesson introduces children to the concept of dividing their money into categories, namely “save,” “spend,” and “share.” If you’re giving your child an allowance, teach them boundaries with money. Discuss what that allowance should cover by prioritizing

the money they receive. Help them to get organized, by have a jar for each portion of the money required to obtain their goals. Perhaps, their goal is to purchase a toy. Show them the total cost and how much they will have to put in that jar each week to meet their goal. If your teenager wants to go to the movies with their friends, it should be on their dime. This helps them to have financial responsibility. Before children are 7 years old, it is the time that they develop the conditions of their life. An early start is a key to setting your kids on the path to a healthy financial future. Giving your

They Won’t Pay, Now What? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. When a homeowner fails to pay their share of the association expenses, the board is duty-bound to pursue the unpleasant but necessary task of compelling the member to pay. The association has three options - Small claims court, non-judicial foreclosure and judicial foreclosure. In each approach, collection costs are added to the debt. SMALL CLAIMS COURT. In small claims court associations can sue for a limited amount Up to $5,000 twice each year and each additional claim is limited to $2,500 per claim, under Code of Civil Procedure Section 116.231(a). Small claims court is fast, filing fees are low, and attorneys are not allowed to represent parties in small claims court trials. Plaintiffs cannot appeal the outcome, while defendants can appeal, sending the case to a retrial before a Superior Court Judge, under Code of Civil Procedure 116.710. NONJUDICIAL FORECLOSURE. Nonjudicial foreclosure involves a series of notices and waiting periods, after which the property is

taken away from the owner without court supervision. The goal of non-judicial foreclosure is simply for the HOA to take ownership of the property if the member does not pay the arrearage. If the property does not have enough net value to cover the debt, HOAs may not after a nonjudicial foreclosure pursue the member for more money. If the member is already in foreclosure from a lender, foreclosure is not a helpful option for the association. Prior to completing a foreclosure sale to take the property, consult legal counsel to confirm foreclosure is in the HOA’s best interests, because sometimes it isn’t. The foreclosure threat does not always compel owners to pay. Some have no fear because their property is so encumbered with other liens that it has no net value, while others simply do not understand that the association can take away their home. An example occurred in a notorious incident years ago involving the Radcliffs of Copperopolis, in Northern California, who lost their home by non-judicial foreclosure over a debt of $120. Anita Radcliff later commented “It didn’t occur to me that they could take away my property…”. July 10, 2019

The nonjudicial foreclosure process must follow many technical requirements, and any error requires the process start over from the beginning, under Civil Code 5690. Homeowners wishing to dispute the debt and stop the nonjudicial foreclosure process normally sue the HOA, manager, and collection company, seeking a restraining order stopping the foreclosure process. JUDICIAL FORECLOSURE. Judicial foreclosure involves a lawsuit seeking money damages and an order foreclosing upon the property. Such claims normally can be filed as a “limited jurisdiction” case (meaning seeking less than $25,000), reducing delay and cost. In the lawsuit, HOAs can elect not to seek an order of foreclosure, or money judgment, or both, depending on the circumstances. Homeowners wishing to dispute judicial foreclosure actions need not sue the

kids the tools they need for a healthy financial future isn’t a one-time conversation. Parents who talk with their kids once a week about the issue are significantly more likely to have kids who are smart about money. HOA, manager and collection firm, but only need to respond to the lawsuit. Since the HOA attorney is involved in judicial foreclosure actions, perhaps the greatest drawback of judicial foreclosure is the cost, so monitor attorney assessment collection costs carefully, and make sure there is a reason for the expense. One size does not fit all, in shoes and in the HOA world. Consider the various options, then choose what works best for the HOA and its circumstances. Kelly G. Magnitude 7.1 earthquake hits Southern California

By Desert Star Staff China has made clear its ambitions in space with the announcement that it has completed construction of its first Mars rover, with a mission penciled in for launch sometime in 2020. The rover’s primary mission is to hunt for signs of life, but the probe will also explore whether the planet can be terraformed, to make it completely habitable for humans. Throughout its mission, the machine will reportedly take atmospheric, topographic, geological and magnetic readings, as part of a feasibility study about future exploration and perhaps even colonization of the planet. The launch is timed to coincide with the planet’s closest fly-by, which occurs every 26 months and lasts approximately one month. Given the 10-minute delay in communications getting from Earth to the Red Planet, the probe will need to make its own landing decisions during the so-called “seven minutes of terror” as it enters the Martian atmosphere. So far, just 19 of the 45 human missions to

Mars have been successful, the majority of which were orbital or flyby in nature. Chinese scientists will also have to tackle the inevitable challenge posed by Mars’ many powerful dust storms, which can hit with the power of a force-12 typhoon back on Earth. “Although China’s Mars mission has started late, we have a high starting point with the three-in-one design. And we are prepared to face the challenges,” Pang Zhihao, an expert in space exploration technology in Beijing, noted. Sun Zezhou, chief designer of China’s Chang’e-4 lunar probe, described the development of the Mars rover as “very troublesome” but added that, “It is pressure that brings about technological progress.” The launch of the Changzheng 5 (“Long March 5”) rocket carrying the rover is expected to take place in July or August 2020 from the Wenchang cosmodrome in Hainan Province. All going to plan, the probe could send data to Earth as early as 2021.

filled with everything from fridges to washing machines. People also posted pictures of enormous dents and cracks on roads, as well as this picture of a local highway, which was blocked by huge stones During a news conference Friday night, head of Kern County Fire Department David Witt said that no fatalities have so far been reported, but that emergency crews were responding to a large number of medical aid calls. He stated that several buildings in the county had collapsed following the shocks, but confirmed that no residents were trapped. An emergency shelter was

set up for persons in need. Ripples from the quake were felt as far away as Phoenix, Las Vegas, Utah and Mexico. The quake superseded the previous day’s 6.4 magnitude earthquake, which had been the largest to hit Southern California in a decade and struck the same area during the afternoon, followed by two magnitude 4 aftershocks. The intensity of Friday night’s quake outstripped the notoriously destructive 1994 Northridge earthquake, though the damage is expected to be less due to it not striking an urban area. “Homes shifted, foundation cracks, retaining walls down,” and one minor injury was reported in the northwest area of San Bernardino, according to the Fire Department. Several fires were reported in Ridgecrest. California could be hit with a series of large earthquakes after the 7.1 magnitude quake that struck on Friday, and aftershocks could go on for years, a seismologist with the US Geological Survey has warned. The south of the state was rocked by two earthquakes in as many days, with a 6.4-magnitude one hitting Ridgecrest on Thursday, the strongest in the state in

over 20 years. Over 1,000 aftershocks have struck since. “This is an earthquake sequence. It will be ongoing,” USGS seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones told reporters Friday. “There is about a onein-twenty chance that this location will be having an even bigger earthquake within the next few days,” she reportedly added. A state of emergency has been declared in the city of Ridgecrest as officials deal with damage and injuries sustained in the quake. The natural disaster ruptured gas lines, caused fires, water mains damage, and knockouts to power and communications lines. When an aftershock is more significant than the main quake, the first quake is renamed as a foreshock, Jones explained. “A magnitude seven usually has aftershocks for years,” she warned. Friday’s earthquake was widely felt across Southern California, including greater Los Angeles, were shaking in some areas lasted about 40 seconds. Low-level rumbling extended as far north as the San Francisco Bay, beyond to Reno in neighboring Nevada, and as far east as Phoenix, Arizona.

MT Joins Climate Alliance, Commits to Paris Agreement

By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – Gov. Steve Bullock has committed Montana to reducing carbon emissions alongside 23 other states. The Treasure State has joined the U.S. Climate Alliance, a group of states and Puerto Rico that has committed to the climate goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, despite the Trump administration’s decision to pull out of the global deal. U.S. targets from the Paris Agreement are a reduction in carbon emissions of 26% to 28% of 2005 levels over the next six years. Julie Cerqueira, executive director of the U.S. Climate Alliance, says Montana’s place within the alliance is unique. “The interesting thing is Montana is more politically conservative than most other alliance states, and so they have a unique opportunity to develop Montana-based

solutions that are going to resonate with leaders and constituents across the political spectrum,” she states. There also is urgency in the state to tackle climate change. According to recent data, western Montana is warming at twice the global rate, and iconic landscapes such as the glaciers of Glacier National Park have shrunk by as much as 85% over the last 50 years. In addition to joining the alliance, Bullock has created the Montana Climate Solutions Council, which will develop strategies on how to make the state carbon neutral by 2035. The council also will explore how to address the needs of communities as the state transitions to renewable energy. Cerqueira says Bullock has highlighted working with farmers and ranchers on land-based solutions and notes that he’ll have

on community health and child and family issues. We’ll bring journalists to Los Angeles at our expense from October 23-26; provide four days of intensive training in data acquisition, cleansing, analysis and visualization techniques; and then send them home to work on a substantive reporting project. The sessions will be led by three of the nation’s most respected data journalists -- Meghan Hoyer, data editor for The Associated Press; Paul Overberg, a data reporter for the Wall St. Journal; and Stanford Professor Cheryl Phillips, former data innovation editor at the Seattle Times -with assistance from other top data journalists from around

the country. We’ll also bring your editor to L.A. for a halfday Editor-Fellow Workshop. Each applicant must propose an ambitious datainformed reporting project. The Center has identified priority areas for projects: California Applicants, the Center seeks proposals for projects that explore how community conditions influence health and wellbeing including health-related environmental justice issues; the impact of community violence on health and wellbeing; racial, ethnic, economic and geographic health disparities; access to care for underserved communities, the performance of California’s safety net; the possible July 10, 2019

consequences in California of the federal effort to roll back the Affordable Care Act and current social supports for low-income people; health and mental health challenges for immigrants; innovative solutions to the state’s public health and health care challenges; the school environment and the emotional health of children, including trauma-informed approaches and efforts to ensure successful paths for youth. We also welcome project ideas that explore the health-related implications of public policies to address the high cost of housing, transportation challenges, air pollution, and neighborhood safety. Proposals from

California journalists can focus on children and families, but they should also meet one of the above criteria. One Data Fellow will be eligible for a $3,500 reporting and data acquisition grant is his or her Fellowship focuses on pregnant women or children 5 and under in Los Angeles County. And several California-based Data Fellows may be eligible to apply for supplemental community engagement grants of up to $2,000. Want to know more? HOROSCOPES ARIES

It a time of playfulness for Aries, of creativity which may take many detours into unusual ways of thinking. You may be distracted often, go off predicted pathways, find alternatives that at first feel confusing, but later shine with golden light. All confusions along the way are guideposts letting you know nothing’s lost or wasted. All have purpose, right timing, and you are led in right directions. Play more, sing, dance and find your way on a different path entirely.

TAURUS House, home, family, parents, lineage and all environments that both nurture and don’t nurture come into your mind. It’s a perfect time to look around the home to discover what work and repairs are needed. Much can be done during retrogrades that has previously been put aside. Don’t let inertia rule your days and nights. Allow your imagination full play with unusual plans and ideas. Remain at home as much as possible. It’s interesting there!

GEMINI Geminis born with Mercury retrograde experience an expanded state of communication and understanding, going out and about in the world with ease and confidence. Geminis not born under Mercury retrograde find themselves in a state of recollection, unable to speak

much (unusual for them), becoming more of a listener for the purpose of inner learning. Do not allow stress around delays. Everything in Mercury retrograde is in right timing.

CANCER The focus is on money, finances, resources and most of all, values. Unexpected monetary issues may arise. Something overlooked comes into view. It’s important to take this retrograde time to list what your values are in all areas of life. It’s also a good time to set money aside for a time in the future when it’s needed. You have a practical and logical intelligence which may go awry during the retrograde. It’s telling you something important and essential.

LEO During the retrograde you may become more mercurial which means changeable, distracted, restless, frustrated while also more adaptable and versatile in conversations. Be sure to listen more. Try not to be too mischievous. Mercury retro is the trickster and very precocious. You will be thinking of your self-identity. Are you who you think you are? Do people understand you? Are you communicating clearly? From the heart of the matter?

too spiritual. You may want to research religions, learn to speak a silent language (perhaps in tongues which mimics the sound of life in nature). You become an excellent listener, friend, one who keeps secrets. Don’t get too complex trying to understand others. Just know they are doing their best, always. You are, too.

LIBRA You are endlessly interested in others, in group and social and community interactions, things trending (and about to trend) and teamwork. New ideas enter your life contributing to your being future oriented and fair minded. Your keen interest in friends helps them understand their own wishes, dreams, hopes, plans and ideals. Don’t doubt your own dreams. Reconnect with them. They wait for your love and reconnection.

SCORPIO

Perhaps there will be subtle power struggles occurring in or around your life. People may feel you’re too intense or

What is occurring with your work in the world? This is a good time to create clear plans of action, to consider past, present and future goals, your aspirations around them and their purpose. During the retrograde you can feel a lack discipline. But that is not reality. Retrogrades call us, not to action, but to inner reflection. You have a talent of communication that helps negotiate fragile situations. This Scorpio skill brings freshness and vitality to all conversations.

Unfortunately, in a recent survey of moms with children under the age of 3, conducted by Perrigo Nutrition, the largest maker of store brand infant formula, one in five respondents said they have used more water than required by the instructions when preparing infant formula. Almost half stated their primary reason was to cut costs or make the formula last longer. Nearly one in 10 moms surveyed have attempted to make their own formula, with nearly half believing it was healthier. Thirty-one percent of respondents stated they made their own formula because it is less expensive to DIY. Writing on behalf of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Steven Abrams warned of the dangers of homemade formula: “Although recipes for homemade formulas circulating on the internet may seem healthy or less expensive, they may not be safe or meet your baby’s nutritional needs.”

The good news is that while many new parents leave the hospital or doctor’s office with the impression that if they need to formulafeed they must do so only with the name brand formula with which their doctor sent them home, a very safe and simple switch to store brand infant formula can be made that will save families money while providing a nutritionally complete product. Just as good as brand-name options, making this switch can save your family $600 per year. Store-brand infant formula is an excellent, pediatricianapproved way to save money on formula-feeding. When cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and designed for infants, these options ensure the proper balance of nutrition. The ability to save on highquality formula is important, as the first year of an infant’s life is critical for long-term growth and development. For a complimentary book

VIRGO

SAGITTARIUS Is there a hunger for new ways of learning, the exchange of new ideas, new philosophies and new ways to communicate. You are skilled in seeing the big picture, of inspiring others while traveling in different communities and cultures. During the retrograde, do not lean into pessimism, the opposite of your usual optimism. Know that travel may be more difficult, plans changed, flights cancelled. Tend to any legal issues immediately. Consider returning to school.

CAPRICORN You may be feeling an undue emotionality, a depth of desire for something needed but not quite known yet. It is a good time to reconnect with those you love, even if they are far away. This gives you something real to do in this retrograde, especially when Mercury returns to Cancer. You are curious about motivation, the mysterious something in others that drives them. Your mind becomes penetrating and able to strategize. When you speak, you stand in authority. People listen. You study your lineage.

Remain in quiet, in stillness as much as possible. This balances the energies when everything seems confusing and in chaos. Share ideas but don’t expect specific outcomes. Look at both sides of the coin. It creates stimulating conversations and new perspectives.

PISCES There seems to be work, work and more work to be done. With many details in tow. Things needs to be sorted, ordered and organized in your personal environment. Attention to this will be helpful in the weeks and months to come. Health is most important at this time. Each morning begin the day with the words, “Everyday in every way I am getting healthier and healthier.” (from Dr. Coue) And “Help me to do my very best today.” These set the course of the day for excellence. Risa D’Angeles is the founder and director of the Esoteric & Astrological Studies Research Institute: Risa’s Esoteric Astrology. She can be reached at risagoodwill@gmail.com.

AQUARIUS Mercury is transiting your house of relationships. Be careful in all communications so that misunderstandings don’t arise. Especially with loved one, those close to you, partners in both love and work.

Raising a Baby is Expensive: How to Safely Save Money

By Desert Star Staff Raising a child in the U.S. is an expensive proposition, particularly when using name-brand products. For most growing families, finding ways to make life more affordable is a top priority. Unfortunately, when it comes to feeding babies, many unknowingly make unsafe choices in an attempt to stretch their budgets for things like baby formula. New parents should never try to save money by feeding babies a diluted formula or homemade formula -- two of the more common mistakes parents make around formulafeeding. Diluted or homemade formula won’t have the correct essential vitamins and minerals, or caloric content needed for babies to grow and develop properly. Not only can this result in developmental delays, dangerous electrolyte imbalances can occur if you incorrectly prepare formula -- resulting in illness or even death.

‘Toy Story 4’--A Treat For The Kid In All Of Us On Nov. 22, 1995 “Toy Story,” the first computergenerated animated film ever made, debuted on the silver screen. Over the years “Toy Story” features have earned nine Oscar nominations and in 2011 the third “Toy Story” won the Oscar for animation. Besides winning Oscar gold, the “Toy Story” franchise has also won the hearts of moviegoers--young and old and in between. “Toy Story 4” is no exception. The old gang is still on hand in “Toy Story 4” along with new toys that include Giggle McDimples (Aki Maki) who is Bo Peep’s new BFF, two plush toys named Ducky and Bunny (Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) plus the motor-cycle riding daredevil Duke Caboom (voiced by Keanu Reeves). Screenwriters Stephany Folsom and Andrew Stanton have also added a goofy looking new toy made from a spork named Forkie. The story begins nine years earlier as Andy’s sister is about to give away Bo Peep (Annie Potts) and her sheep. It’s a sad farewell for Woody who likes Bo Peep more than he realizes. Then the narrative switches to the present. Little Bonnie (Madeleine McGraw) now has all of Andy’s toys. They were given to her just before he left for college in “Toy Story 3.” Woody (Tom Hanks) is still one of her toys, but she doesn’t play with him

often anymore. However, he still worries about her, so when she leaves for her first day of kindergarten, he hides in her school bag to be sure she’s OK. After a little boy throws her art supplies in the wastebasket, Woody stealthily puts them back on her desk. Using a plastic spork, Bonnie makes a toy that she names Forky. However Forky thinks he’s trash and keeps tossing himself into a wastebasket. When Bonnie and her parents go on a road trip, Forky jumps out of the car followed by Woody who finally convinces him he is not junk-he’s a toy. On their way back to the car, Woody sees Bo Peep’s lampstand in an antique store window, so he and Forky go Inside to look for her. Bo Peep isn’t there, but a doll named Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) and four creepy ventriloquist dummies are. Eventually Woody and Bo find each other. She has become a worldly toy living on her own, but it’s clear that they both still have feelings for each other. Will they get together this time? At this point, Woody’s close pal Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) steps in and gives him some very good advice. “Toy Story 4” has a running time of 1 hour 40 minutes and is rated G.

Trump’s July 4 Extravaganza Siphons Money from National Parks

By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – The first ever “Salute to America,” being staged by President Donald Trump in Washington this Fourth of July will divert $2.5 million from national parks that already have a $12 billion maintenance backlog. Earlier this year, national parks lost $6 million in fee revenues due to the government shutdown. Theresa Pierno, president and CEO of the National Parks Conservation Association, maintains diverting funds from parks for the event is a breach of trust with the public. “Here again, we’re diverting fees, and this time for something that just seems so outrageous and in no way aligns with what’s in the best interest of protecting our national parks,” she states. In Minnesota alone, national parks need $17 million in infrastructure upgrades. www.desertstarweekly.com

The Washington event will include a display of military hardware, including tanks and flyovers by fighter jets, as well as an address by the president and an expanded fireworks show. Trump earlier floated a military parade on the Fourth of July or Veterans Day, inspired by parades on Bastille Day in France, but plans were scrapped when Washington, D.C. officials said it would cost upwards of $90 million. The Trump administration has declined to say how much the extravaganza will cost taxpayers, but Pierno argues the national parks should not be a source of funds. “They think $2.5 million isn’t a lot, but when you add that to the $6 million that was already lost in fee revenue when the federal government shut down in December, this continues to compound the problem,” she stresses. Pierno says more than

400 park sites have crumbling roads, eroding trails, unsafe campgrounds, and visitor centers that need repairs. “The reality is, when you pay your fees and you go into the national parks, I

think everybody expects that they’re going to be used as they’re supposed to be used,” Pierno states. National parks are a huge source of income for states. For example,

A Sweet Superfruit for Summer Meals By Desert Star Staff From backyard barbecues and family picnics to a bright addition to seasonal recipes, sweet cherries not only provide a boost of flavor but also pack a punch when it comes to nutrition, helping keep you and your family healthy during

busy summer months. Cherries can help reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure as well as relieve stress and gout, and can improve sleep quality. The perfect time to take advantage of the goodness of Northwest-grown sweet

cherries is through August. Eat fresh cherries straight out of hand as a snack, bake them into a pie or pair with ice cream for a sweet summertime treat. The rich fruitiness of sweet cherries helps blunt the sharp edge of dried fruit in a quick and easy Cherry Sauce recipe.

Low in sugar and versatile, this sauce can be used as a base ingredient for cocktails, a glaze for meats, a spread for sandwiches, a topping for yogurt and more. Add some ginger or orange peel to complement your menu and you may have a new,

nutritious summer favorite. Or, for a sweet, simple snack, use cherries to make an appetizer like Cherry Bruschetta. Find more recipes and ways to use cherries at nwcherries.com. Famiily Features

ad diets come and go, and as many Americans find, so do the pounds they lose. Most experts agree that eliminating, or drastically reducing, any of the major foods groups from your diet can be detrimental to your health and prevent you from achieving long-term healthy eating goals. Each of the food groups plays a distinct role in fueling your body and providing it with the vitamins and nutrients it needs. Attempt a well-rounded approach to eating, such as one that includes more nutritious choices for popular dishes like sandwiches. In general, pay attention to the variety, amount and nutrition of the foods you consume. Consider these ideas for creating a balanced diet and a nutritious sandwich to help ensure you get enough of each food group:

Start from the Outside There are two groups of grains: whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel, while refined grains have been milled for a finer texture and are required to be enriched per government mandate to help the population make up for nutrient shortfalls. Grains should account for about one quarter of each meal, but at least half of them should be whole grains – a fact that may surprise some people. “Many health professionals mistakenly encourage consumers to skip the bread when trying to improve diets,” said Yanni Papanikolaou from Nutrition Strategies Inc., who completed a study to assess the energy and nutrients contributed from sandwiches in diets of children and adolescents. “Americans need to think twice before cutting bread from their diets. In fact, bread packs more of a nutrient punch than a caloric one.” The ingredients inside a sandwich, not the bread itself, are the most significant drivers of calories, fat and sodium, according to Papanikolaou’s research. A separate study published in the journal “Nutrients” shows grain foods contribute less than 15 percent of all calories in the total diet, while delivering greater than 20 percent of three shortfall nutrients – dietary fiber, folate and iron – and greater than 10 percent of calcium, magnesium and vitamin A.

www.desertstarweekly.com

Consumers can significantly and positively impact their caloric, fat and sodium intake by making more deliberate decisions about sandwich ingredients, including choosing either whole-grain or enriched-grain bread. Find more information about the role of grains in a healthy diet at GrainFoodsFoundation.org.

Rethink the Ingredients Making more nutritious choices with sandwiches and positively impacting your consumption of calories, fat and sodium is oftentimes a matter of changing the way you stack ingredients between the bread. Consider this sample sandwich: two slices of whole-grain or enriched bread, 2-3 slices of lunchmeat, two slices of cheese, a few spinach or lettuce leaves and a slice of tomato. Contrary to popular belief, research shows that sandwich eaters who choose either whole- or enriched-grain bread can consume less calories, fat and sodium compared to the typical sandwich consumed in the American diet. This demonstrates the need to focus on the ingredients between the bread for a better (more healthful) sandwich. Try a different take on a lunchtime favorite by adding spicy horseradish to this Roast Beef and Arugula Sandwich, or make packing a lunch even simpler with this Ultra-Thin Pastrami Sandwich Lunchbox.

Protein According to the USDA, most Americans get about the right amount of protein in their diets, but could do better at choosing leaner options and adding more variety to their menus. Incorporating more variety doesn’t have to mean sacrificing convenience. For example, while prepared meats like deli meats, hot dogs and jerky are sometimes a target of critics, numerous studies and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans affirm they can be part of a healthy, balanced diet. Prepared beef products provide a convenient source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Because most prepared meats are pre-cooked, they offer consumers easy, on-the-go access to the nutrient density in meat. The prepared meats category is diverse and offers choices to meet nutrition needs, tastes, budgets and personal preferences. Thousands of products are available in the meat case, including low- and reduced-sodium products, low- and reduced-fat products, American Heart Association-certified, organic, Kosher grass-fed options and more. Trump turns against Fox, says some hosts worse than ‘fake news CNN’

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has unloaded on Fox News, slamming the channel for recruiting Democrats and using “fake news” sources. He accused his favorite broadcaster of forgetting “who got them there.” Trump’s ongoing war with the media has been well-documented, but Fox News, which Trump’s detractors describe as his mouthpiece, has been spared his wrath – until now. Brazile stepped down from the DNC after leaked emails revealed the committee’s pro-Clinton bias during the 2016 campaign. It was revealed that Brazile used her position as a former CNN commentator to tip Clinton off about debate questions. She later called her actions a “mistake” she “will never forget.” Brazile joined Fox News as a political contributor back in March. “There’s an audience on Fox News that doesn’t hear enough from Democrats,” she said at the time. Trump, who less than a fortnight ago congratulated Fox News on scoring big on ratings, hinted that its stellar performance would have been impossible without his own contribution. month when he brought non-interventionist Fox News host Tucker Carlson to his meeting with North Korea’s leader Kim Jongun while sending hawkish National Security Advisor John Bolton to Mongolia. While it is not clear what irked him this time (considering Brazile was hired months ago), Trump might have been dissatisfied with the cable channel’s increased coverage of the Democratic nomination race. While Fox News did not succeed in getting the Democratic primary debates, some of the candidates still chose to appear on the network, airing their grievances about Trump. Eyes on NC State Court After SCOTUS Gerrymandering Decision

Some North Carolina Republican lawmakers were accused of gerrymandering in a case that made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff The fight for fair congressional maps continues at the state level, despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s

recent decision that it doesn’t have the authority to prohibit partisan gerrymandering. One of the cases involved in the U.S. Supreme Court ruling

concerns redistricting in 2016 by North Carolina Republican lawmakers. Bryan Warner, director of communications with Common Cause NC, said

the high court’s decision is unfortunate, but the case has elevated public awareness of gerrymandering, and put the spotlight on state courts. “On July 15, we have a separate case - Common Cause v. Lewis - going to trial in state court, challenging partisan gerrymandering of our legislative districts as a violation of the North Carolina Constitution,” Warner said. “That case may ultimately go before the North Carolina Supreme Court, which would have the final say there.” The plaintiffs include North Carolina’s Democratic Party and a group of voters, arguing that gerrymandering violates several clauses in the state Constitution. Warner said a victory would mean new state House and Senate

districts could potentially be drawn for the 2020 election. Warner pointed out gerrymandering undercuts voter representation, particularly for districts that are predominantly African-American and Hispanic. “When you have extreme partisan gerrymandering, you have a situation where the districts are drawn in such a way that elected officials or legislators are more worried about catering to the far extremes of their party. They’re more worried about facing a primary election challenge than they are about the General Election,” he said. “That means we really don’t have compromise.” After completion of the 2020 U.S. Census, states will begin the process of redrawing their legislative districts.

U.S. Jails Crowded with People Not Convicted, but Awaiting Trial By Desert Star Staff Across America, the population in local and regional jails has tripled in the last 40 years. And new research suggests that over the last 20 years that growth is essentially made up of people who haven’t been convicted of anything. The Prison Policy Initiative examined U.S. Justice Department and past census data from the 1980s through 2016. Wanda Bertram, a communications strategist at the Prison Policy Initiative, says the research and advocacy group found pre-trial detention is a major factor, as many detainees either can’t afford their bail or judges won’t release them on personal recognizance. “The pre-trial population, which is much bigger than it was 10 or 20 years ago, is primarily what’s driving crowding in local jails,” she states. “These are people that have not yet been convicted of a crime, but

14

DesertSTAR

are being held before their trial.” Bertram says many people with addictions or mental illness end up in jails simply because the community lacks other good options. She says that, and mass arrests tied to a tough on crime approach, have created an expensive problem for local governments. Supporters of what’s known as broken windows policing, which focuses on small crimes, argue it serves as a deterrent and has driven crime rates down. In part to deal with overcrowded jails, West Virginia has worked on reducing the root causes of incarceration, especially substance abuse. Bertram says that’s a smarter approach. She says the kind of things that help keep people out of the criminal justice system – family support, a job, substance abuse or mental health treatment – are all interrupted when someone is locked up.

According to new research, people with mental illness or other problems often end up in jail awaiting trial because the community may lack other good options for them. (Prison Policy Initiative) “Taking people that are already suffering from a lack of services and doubling down on their pain,” she points out. “For the most part, people that are released pre-trial do show up for court. And when they don’t show up, it’s because July 10, 2019

of the same reason that, you know, you might miss the bus, your boss kept you late, you couldn’t get time off work, you had a child care issue come up, you just forgot.” Bertram adds some local jurisdictions have seen

promising results by doing away with cash bail – instead, releasing folks ahead of their trial and following up with reminders and the like. She says most people would rather stay out of trouble. www.desertstarweekly.com

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: WILLIAM DENNIS STOLBACH CASE NO. PRIN1802138. To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of: WILLIAM DENNIS STOLBACH A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by LETICIA ESPARZA in the Superior Court of California, County of RIVERSIDE. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that LETICIA ESPARZA be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on NOVEMBER 4, 2019 at 1:30PM in Dept PS3 located at 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE 154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code Section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for petitioner: DAVID D. L. HORTON, Esq. #297149, DAVID D.L. HORTON, Esq. & ASSOCIATES, 777 E. Friend of the Clintons or Trump’s pal? Media war erupts after Epstein’s arrest By Desert Star Staff Billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein’s arrest on new sex trafficking charges has ignited a media war, with outlets on each side of the spectrum rushing to tie their political opponents to the notorious pedophile. Having already served 13 months in an ‘open-door’ prison for abusing scores of underage girls after striking a non-prosecution agreement in 2007, Epstein was arrested in New York on Saturday evening. Facing one count of sex trafficking of minors and another of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors, the 66-year-old could serve up to 45 years behind bars if convicted. The sealed indictment reportedly details a litany of molestation, abuse, and trafficking of dozens of girls, some as young as 14. A rich and connected man, Epstein rubbed shoulders with presidents, business moguls, Hollywood stars, and even British royalty. In the wake of his arrest, partisan media outlets jumped at the chance to tie their opponents to the disgraced billionaire. Left-leaning Newsweek called Epstein a “longtime friend” of President Donald Trump, while Raw Story called him a “Trump pal.” The Independent described him as a “former friend of Trump,” while the Huffington Post highlighted a 2002 quote by Trump calling Epstein a “terrific guy” who likes his women “on the younger side.” The sex offender was a regular at Trump’s Mar-aLago country club for several

years. Trump also reportedly hitched a ride from Florida to New York at least once on his private jet, according to a 2009 deposition from Epstein’s brother Mark. Though Trump’s legal team have insisted the president knew nothing of his horrifying behavior, Trump barred his supposed “friend” from Mar-a-Lago after he discovered “Epstein sexually assaulted an underage girl at the club,” according to court documents filed by Florida lawyer Bradley Edwards. After news broke on Saturday, the right had accusations of their own. In a mirror image of the left’s coverage, PJ Media called Epstein “Bill Clinton’s billionaire friend.” Fox News also described him as “friends” with Bill Clinton, while the Gateway Pundit went a step further, claiming without evidence that Epstein flew Clinton to “Orgy Island,” a private island off the coast of Puerto Rico where the billionaire allegedly carried out much of his abuse. A host of conservative commentators on Twitter also shouted the connection. The sex offender was a regular at Trump’s Mar-aLago country club for several years. good to know what our former president was doing,” Priebus told Bloomberg in 2015. For the moment, Epstein’s downfall has not brought with it any household names from the worlds of politics, business, and entertainment. However, as the case against him progresses, the embattled pedophile could come under pressure to give up friends on either side to avoid spending the rest of his life in prison.

Is Your Child’s Physical Development on Track? By Desert Star Staff All children develop at their own pace. Sometimes however, a child may not do certain activities that other children the same age are doing -- like sitting without support, rolling over, walking or other physical skills. Parents may question whether their child has a physical developmental delay. How can you tell if your child’s physical development is on track? Free online tools and guides can be a good start. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) offers

an interactive tool called “Physical Developmental Delays: What to Look For,” available at healthychildren. org/motordelay. Available in English and Spanish, this interactive tool helps parents learn more about their child’s physical development, and how to talk to their child’s pediatrician about their concerns. A physical developmental delay can be a sign of a serious health condition, so it’s important to discuss your concerns with your child’s pediatrician and get help as needed. StatePoint

Immigrants’ Rights Groups Laud Supreme Court Census Decision By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – Civilrights groups are praising a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that will probably keep a question about citizenship off the 2020 Census.

The high court rejected the Trump administration’s explanation that asking people about their citizenship status is necessary to enforce the Voting Rights Act. Thomas Saenz, president and general

counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, says recently unearthed documents from a

President Donald Trump is calling for a delay of the 2020 U.S. Census after the Supreme Court rejected his administration’s call to include a question about citizenship. (U.S. Census Bureau)

now-deceased Republican consultant proved the real motivation behind the question. “That consultant indicates the reason to include the citizenship question is to ‘advantage whites, non-Hispanics and Republicans,’” says Saenz. “Ultimately, what’s behind the question is to trigger an under-count in groups that the Trump administration views as hostile.” Immigrants’ rights groups claim that a citizenship question would prompt foreign-born Americans to ignore the survey, fearing that the Census Bureau would turn their data over to immigration enforcement officers, who could use it to target undocumented relatives for deportation. Any under-count would negatively affect immigrant communities, because

census data is used to redraw political maps and distribute federal funds. Saenz notes that any such breach of confidentiality would be highly illegal, and vows close scrutiny of the process. “Powerful people and powerful organizations will be carefully watching and will step in, to the extent they can, to stop any breach of confidentiality,’” says Saenz. “That’s how important this is.” This decision leaves the door open for the administration to come back with a different argument, and the president is now calling for the census to be delayed. Civilrights groups are pressing on with a similar lawsuit intended to prove that racial intent was the motive for adding the citizenship question and asking that it be blocked permanently from census forms.

Jewish group calls on Congress to make Holocaust education mandatory

By Desert Star Staff The World Jewish Congress is pushing US lawmakers to make Holocaust education mandatory in all schools, citing statistics from a 2018 poll revealing half of millennials can’t name a single Nazi concentration camp. The WJC started a petition calling on Congress to “make Holocaust education mandatory in every school in the United States,” that has garnered 8,500 signatures so far. The petition points to a rise in antisemitism and

warns that “the horrors of the Holocaust are fading from our collective memory, especially among millennials.” It refers to statistics found in the 2018 Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness Study which surveyed 1,350 Americans aged 18 and over and found 49 percent of millennials and 45 percent of adults couldn’t name a concentration camp or ghetto in Europe during the Holocaust. It also revealed that 41 percent of millennials think the number of Jews killed in

the Holocaust was two million or less, rather than six million. ‘The Never Again Education Act’ would create a grant program run by the Department of Education to provide teachers with training and tools to teach students about the Holocaust “and the repercussions that hate and intolerance can have on our society.” The bill was reintroduced in January by Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) after failing to be enacted at a previous session of Congress. Would-be first black African in space dies in motorcycle crash

By Desert Star Staff South African Mandla Maseko, known as ‘The Afronaut,’ who won the chance in 2015 to be the first black African to go space, has died before he could fulfil his lifelong ambition, in a motorcycle accident on Saturday. Mandla, 30, from a township outside Pretoria, beat a million other entrants from 75 countries to win a trip to space, as one of a group of 23 who will take part in an hour-long, 103-kilometer (64-mile) suborbital flight aboard the Lynx Mark II craft to the edge of space. The young part-time DJ and candidate officer with the South African air force, who

was also affectionately known as “spaceboy,” would have been the first black African person in space. His family announced the tragic news via a statement on social media. He underwent a week of skydiving, air combat and G-force training at the Kennedy Space Academy in Florida in preparation for the flight, where he also met Buzz Aldrin, the second man to set foot on the moon. He had originally been scheduled to fly in 2015 but an official announcement was never made about when the journey to space would take place. His untimely death means that the historic first will instead be achieved by another ‘Afronaut’.

By Desert Star Staff Seventy-four years after he saw the flag raised on Iwo Jima, a World War II veteran has an Independence Day message for America: The fight for liberty goes on, and today’s enemies are ignorance and indifference to justice. Ninety-four-year-old Bob Pennoyer saw the American flag raised on Iwo Jima. He describes that moment as embodying the spirit of liberty, as people from different faiths, races and nationalities fought and bled together to defeat tyranny. From the success of the civil-rights movement to the fight for women’s reproductive rights and today’s Parkland students speaking out against gun violence, Pennoyer says he sees the fight for liberty continue. And, he adds, it takes work to preserve our democracy. “America is an example to the nations of the world, but we’re not perfect, and we have to acknowledge we’re not perfect,” says Pennoyer. “We can do better and we must do better, and the most important thing is to be active by voting and electing people who want to bring the country and the community together and serve the nation.” This Independence Day, Pennoyer is calling on Americans’ courage to fight today for the core values for which so many have given their lives - equality, freedom and self-government. He believes now is a good time to put aside politics and remember the values that unite us. And what are they, some might ask? The private sector has been vital to creating the country’s wealth, but Pennoyer says equal opportunities are needed for people from all walks of life. “We need the government to ensure a level playing

field so that the power that’s accumulated by big corporations doesn’t obliterate the right of small business to survive and thrive in our nation,” he says. He sees another key factor in protecting our freedoms as ensuring that our country works toward peace and avoids unnecessary conflicts. “While I personally felt that the Iraq war was one of the worst blunders in history, the people who served in that war were willing to risk their lives for the nation,” he adds. “And they deserve our highest respect and should be honored and helped when they come back to civilian life.” Pennoyer’s generation is often referred to as “the greatest,” but he believes every generation has the qualities that will save and serve liberty. Using a reminder of the WWII America sacrifices on D Day in France, and a

historic line from the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” to illustrate the fight against the enemies of freedom, Pennoyer hopes his call to action helps inspire generations of today to do their part.

As he puts it, “I’m filled with hope knowing that, long after I am gone, the people who hear this message, imbued with the millions like them, imbued with the spirit of liberty, building on the sacrifices made

by those who gave their lives on a beach at Normandy, will strive to save democracy and freedom as they ‘trample out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.’”
