By Desert Star Staff In an operation that gripped the entire world, all 12 boys and their football coach have been successfully rescued from a cave in Thailand after being trapped for more than two weeks. Members of the ‘Wild Boars’ soccer team, who range in age from 12 to 16, and their coach became trapped after a rainy season downpour turned a cave adventure in the northern province of Chiang Rai into a nightmare, flooding the tunnels and making it impossible to leave. Divers began a search operation on June 25, and the group was finally found – all alive – by British divers on July 2. The search operation
quickly turned into a rescue mission involving 90 divers – 50 foreign and 40 Thai – though some warned it could take months. However, the first four boys were safely brought out of the cave on Sunday, tethered to rescue divers. An additional four boys were brought out on Monday, and the last four boys and the coach were rescued on Tuesday. The incredible rescue has been deemed a miracle by many, but the operation wasn’t without tragedy. Cristiano Ronaldo joins Juventus from Real Madrid
By Desert Star Staff Real Madrid and Juventus have agreed a fee for striker Cristiano Ronaldo to move to the Italian club after almost a decade in the Spanish capital. Juventus will reportedly pay €118 million ($140 million) for the 33-year-old Portugal striker, with the news being confirmed on Tuesday after intense speculation surrounding the transfer. Ronaldo is signing a fouryear deal with the Serie A team and will earn a reported €30 million ($35 million) a year. Ronaldo had been at Real since 2009 and became the club’s all-time top scorer on 451 goals in a spell which saw him win the Champions League four times with the Spanish club, among numerous other titles. Real Madrid issued a statement on the move, thanking Ronaldo for his years of service and listing the many awards and accolades the team and player had achieved together. “Real Madrid CF communicates that, in response to the will and request expressed by the player Cristiano Ronaldo, he has agreed to transfer to Juventus FC.” the statement read. “Today, Real Madrid wants
to express its gratitude to a player who has proved to be the best in the world and who has marked one of the brightest times in the history of our club and world football. “Beyond the conquered titles, the trophies achieved, and the triumphs achieved in the playing fields during these 9 years, Cristiano Ronaldo has been an example of dedication, work, responsibility, talent and improvement. “He has also become the top scorer in the history of Real Madrid with 451 goals in 438 games. By Janice Gough Some 213,000 jobs were added to the Job market the past month, and it is the second month in a row that hiring figures are above 200,000. The reason that unemployment ticked up slightly from 3.8 to 4 percent is that more people are looking for work. The increase in participation was entirely focused on people who have a high school diploma or less. This is an auspicious sign about the state of our labor market.
Job growth this year has been faster than in 2017. The year’s halfway point has created some 1.2 million jobs. Revised figures for April and May bring the monthly average for this year to 214,000 jobs—up from 182,000 the year before. Now is the best time ever to find that job you love. The unemployment rates have dropped to 4 Percent, meaning there has been more hiring. Job creation is plentiful in Coachella Valley. Also, it presents many new opportunities for all types of businesses and can help one to get established
on a lifetime career path. Coachella Valley will have the highest participation in the Cannabis boom in the country. This industry will offer jobs in many types of occupations, from Delivery to Security, Marketing, Distribution, Mechanics, Maintenance and other jobs related to Agriculture. And considering the “trickle down” effect, it will create tremendous opportunities in all of Coachella Valley. Our community and students will have the opportunity to get local training, due to new educational training sites. The College of the Desert will be opening their extension school in Palm Springs and other schools to will offer training in the many jobs in the Cannabis industry in both Desert Hot Springs and Indio. The fact that wages are increasing will cause us great growth in the Valley, Increasing the minimum wage can be advantageous in some ways and harmful in others. This depends on where the economy is. The Valley presents a perfect combination -many more jobs and higher wages. Due to a more stabilized economy, employers will not feel the pressure of the increase in the cost of labor. Considering the investment in our infrastructure, and the profits made in the Valley, the wage increase will not make a negative impact. Minimum wage in California is $10.50
Are These Rules Valid? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Dear Mr. Richardson: The DavisStirling Act requires HOAs to develop certain operating rules, e.g., for elections or dispute resolution. Can (or should) the required rules be incorporated into the bylaws? Our small planned development (no recreational facilities, public streets, etc.) has little need for any rules other than what the Act requires. J.B., Santa Maria Dear J.B.: The Davis-Stirling Act requires five sets of rules: Election rules (Civil 5105), internal dispute resolution policies (Civil 5905); architectural application procedures (Civil 4765); a schedule of fines (Civil 5850), and assessment delinquency policies (Civil 5310(a)(7)). Most associations have additional rules meeting their particular needs, such as amenity usage rules, architectural and landscaping standards, parking rules, and meeting rules, for example. Bylaws should not contain rules. Bylaws are meant to be more permanent, since normally a vote of the entire
membership is required to amend bylaws. Bylaws should speak to how the corporation is governed – such as corporate powers and limits and board eligibility. Rules are less permanent, since they can be amended by the board with 30 days’ notice to the members. Could your community vote to amend the bylaws and transplant all the rules into the bylaws? Yes, but it’s not a good idea. As time passes, you all may find that some updating of certain rules is necessary and you do not want to have to hold a membership vote each time. Thanks, Kelly Dear Kelly: I bought a condo in Richmond, CA. and without reading the HOA rules I replaced carpet with hardwood because I have asthma and allergies. I love my new home but last month I received a letter from the HOA that I need to remove the hard floor and replace it with carpet. I wrote them a letter explaining my condition and also provided a letter from my doctor stating that I do have asthma and allergies but I received a letter that the board voted not to grant an exception and I have to replace the floor with carpet otherwise they would enter my home, replace the flooring, and charge me for it. Regards, M.L., Richmond Dear M.L.: Unfortunately, it seems most homeowners do not read the association CC&Rs or rules before they close escrow, only to find out later what is allowed or banned. In wood framed apartment-style (meaning stacked) condominiums, a ban on wood floors is a good idea, since it protects upper and lower neighbors from noise nuisance disputes. However, you have triggered a Fair Housing Act request for accommodation of your disability (your allergies). That does not end the discussion, however, because it may be reasonable for the association to require you to include reasonable sound deadening measures underneath the hard flooring to protect the neighbor underneath you

Trade equalization between countries has been avoided for decades, however for our country to be treated fairly and to remain the world leader, paying more for some goods, comes with the territory. The United States is still the land of opportunity, which is why so many want to migrate to our country. Find something you love doing and become the Best at doing it. Thai boys trapped inside the cave write letters to families
By Desert Star Staff Twelve boys who have been trapped inside a Thai cave for over two weeks have written a series of heartbreaking notes to their families. Some asked for fried chicken, while others simply told their parents that they loved them. The letters, handwritten in blue pen and pencil on pieces of paper, were released by the Thai Navy SEALs on Facebook earlier on Saturday. The boys, members of a football team between the ages of 11 and 16, have been trapped with their coach in Tham Luang cave in northern Chiang Rai Province since late June. Search and rescue efforts have been hampered by rising water levels. “Dad, Mum, don’t worry I’m fine. Tell Yord, prepare to bring me fried chicken to eat,” wrote Chanin ‘Tun’ Wiboonrungrueng, 11, the youngest of the boys. The letters are the first messages from the trapped teens to their families. Another boy, 13-year-old Sompong ‘Pong’ Jaiwong, put on a brave face: “Dear Mum and Dad, I love you. Don’t worry, I’m safe. Love you all.” Nattawut ‘Tle’ Takamsai,
14, bravely assured his family that he can take care of himself; while Ekkarat ‘Bill’ Wongsookchan, 14, promised his parents to help them at the shop. “Don’t worry. I really miss everyone. Grandpa, uncle, Dad, Mum and brothers. I love you all,” 13-year-old Panumas ‘Mick’ Saengdee wrote. Duangpetch ‘Dom’ Promthep, 13, called on his parents not to forget to throw him a birthday party. Dom’s teammate Peerapat ‘Night’ Sompiangjai has already missed his birthday party while stranded inside the cave. His parents are reportedly keeping his birthday cake in the fridge. The team’s coach Ekaphol ‘Ake’ Chantawong has apparently taken the blame for the incident. In his letter, the 25-year old apologized and vowed to take care of the boys. “Thank you for your kind support and I would like to say I’m really sorry to you all,” he wrote. Chantawong also addressed his aunt and grandmother, asking them not to worry about him. “Aunt, please tell grandma to do vegetables paste and crispy pork skin. If I can go out, I’ll eat it,” he wrote.
Hundreds of rescuers, mostly Thai Navy SEALs, are working to provide those trapped in the cave with all necessary supplies while pumping water out of the complex. More than 100 chimneys are being drilled into the mountain to reach the team, rescue operation chief Narongsak Osottanakorn said on Saturday. “Some [of the chimneys] are as deep as 400 meters... but they still cannot find their location yet,” he added. According to Osottanakorn, current conditions of water, air and
the children’s health are still “most suitable” for evacuation. In the meantime, oxygen levels have fallen inside the cave complex. Every inhalation means more oxygen is taken from the cave pockets and every exhalation means more carbon dioxide. “When oxygen in our blood is low, more carbon dioxide will enter the blood stream. If it reaches a certain level, it could harm our body, no matter how much oxygen there is in the air,” Osottanakorn said. The operation was overshadowed by the death
of a former Marine who died from lack of oxygen after bringing much-needed gas supplies to the group on Thursday. The 38-year-old rescuer is said to have lost consciousness on the return dive as he apparently did not have enough oxygen for himself The large-scale rescue efforts are being carried out amid intense media attention and public interest. On Friday, Tesla founder Elon Musk said he was sending teams from his SpaceX company and Boring Co. engineering firm, which is developing tunneling systems.
By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – While the Justice Department asks for more time to reunite children and parents separated at the southern U.S. border, it was red tape and bureaucracy that delayed reuniting a 31-year-old Guatemalan mother and her 8-year-old daughter seeking refugee status in Massachusetts. It took 55 days to reunite Angelica GonzalezGarcia with her daughter on Thursday at Logan International Airport in Boston. Attorney Susan Church says it took “a herculean effort” to reunite them. “The hope is always the fact that so many people joined together to help this one family, and I suspect similar group efforts are
happening around the country,” Church states. “It’s just absolutely infuriating that it takes such extensive use of resources to reunite a mother with her child.” Meanwhile, officials are scrambling to pair children with parents. The Trump administration maintains the court mandate for reuniting all children under age five with their parents by July 10 – and all other children by July 26 – isn’t enough time to verify and vet each parent. But according to Church, the delay in the GonzalezGarcia case was due to the government’s inefficient fingerprint verification process. Gonzalez-Garcia and her daughter were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona, and sent to different
parts of the country. Church says authorities kept putting off appointments to verify the mother’s and daughter’s fingerprints. “The delay is being caused by these fingerprints that the Office of Refugee Resettlement requires the parents to take before their children are returned,” Church points out. “However, all the parents have had their fingerprints taken already at the border.” In Congress, Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, who worked to help reunite the family, described the reunion as “heart-wrenching,” and said, “We know there are just under 3,000 more like her who are still waiting.”

Spend Time with the Elderly
Seniors often hold wisdom, knowledge and experience that younger generations have yet to accumulate. Yet, as they age, a community’s oldest residents are often left alone. These days it’s less common for family members to live near one another, so “adopting” an elderly resident down the street or at the local senior housing center is a way to help monitor his or her well-being and ensure personal ties to the community are maintained. Not only can this provide a valuable service for an elderly person and his or her family, it may bring you great personal satisfaction as you learn about the community’s history through the eyes of someone who saw it evolve firsthand.
Donate to Nonprofits
If you’re concerned your budget doesn’t stretch far enough to make a meaningful cash contribution, there are plenty of other ways you can donate to nonprofit organizations in your community. Volunteer hours or even gently used items like office furniture or supplies are often in high demand. You can even donate by helping your favorite nonprofit uncover new funding opportunities. For example, the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, provides farmers an opportunity to help a nonprofit of their choice. Eligible farmers can enroll in the program for a chance to direct a donation to a local eligible nonprofit organization. Since 2010, the program has shown a commitment to strengthening farming communities by awarding more than $29 million to nonprofits, supporting food banks, ag youth organizations, supplying essentials for the needy and acquiring life-saving emergency response equipment.
Be a Mentor
Much as you can gain valuable wisdom from elderly residents, you also likely have your own knowledge that can benefit others in your community. Consider the areas where you excel and explore how your community can benefit. You might put your athletic talents to use coaching a youth sports team, teach scouts a skill for advancement or lend your experience as a human resources professional to an organization that helps disadvantaged individuals improve their employment opportunities. If you’re good with numbers, maybe volunteering as a financial advisor to a local nonprofit board is worth considering.
Help Create Future Leaders
If the future vitality and well-being of your community is a priority, your giving may involve creating opportunities for future generations. Programs like America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, encourage rural youth to become the next generation of ag leaders by awarding scholarships to support their pursuit of higher education in ag-related fields of study. The scholarships are administered by the National FFA Organization, but students do not have to be FFA members to apply. Since 2014, the program has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships for students looking to study ag-related fields after high school.

Jurors Convict Man Accused Of Staging Girlfriend’s Suicide
KMIR Kitty Alvarado A man was convicted Tuesday of shooting his girlfriend in the head at their Palm Springs apartment and staging the scene to look like she took her own life. Jurors deliberated about two hours before finding 35-year-old James Beushausen guilty of murder, rejecting the defense’s account that she was driven to suicide because she was suffering from a painful illness and was upset about her boyfriend’s alcoholism. In her closing argument on Monday, Assistant District Attorney Michelle Paradise told jurors that the 27-year-old victim, Jaylynn Amanda Keith, had displayed no suicidal tendencies and had told friends and family that she feared that her boyfriend might harm her. Keith’s body was found on March 15, 2017, in the bathtub of the Belardo Road apartment the couple shared. She died from a single gunshot wound to the center of her forehead. A 9mm pistol was found beneath her body, which Palm Springs investigators determined was inconsistent with the theory that Keith shot herself, based on the positioning of her body in the tub. Beushausen told investigators that he’d moved her body and the gun after waking up and finding her in the bathroom. Paradise told jurors that Beushausen rendered Keith unconscious, placed her into the tub, then shot her while shielding himself from blood spatter behind a shower curtain.
The defendant told investigators, as well as arriving emergency personnel and a 911 dispatcher, that Keith had shot herself while he was asleep, but also made several claims that he thought she slipped and hit her head, according to Paradise, who said that a head wound discovered by investigators occurred independently of the gunshot and hinted that Keith may have been assaulted in order to stage an apparent suicide. The prosecutor questioned Beushausen’s statements regarding the morning of the shooting, particularly his account that he spent between 10 and 20 minutes searching for Keith after being roused from sleep by a “popping” sound that he believed might have been coming from their air conditioner. Paradise emphasized that the apartment was about 430 square feet and that the bathroom would have been easily visible from the couple’s bed. She also described Beushausen as “a gun enthusiast” who regularly went shooting and should have known what a gunshot sounds like. Paradise told jurors that the couple’s relationship was deteriorating over Beushausen’s alcoholism, which led him to undergo rehab stints and triggered several arguments between the two. Paradise quoted a Dec. 28, 2016, text from Keith to a friend, in which she wrote: “James has been drinking for the last four days This might be the end for us. This tops it all.”
According to Paradise, Keith had come to the breaking point in their nearly five-year relationship and was going to leave if he couldn’t stop drinking. On March 14, the day prior to her death, Keith texted family members that Beushausen got “psycho on me” during an altercation in which he smashed his cell phone and screamed at her, Paradise said. Keith was going to tell him she was leaving him after he sobered up, and said she was afraid things would get “physically bad” when she told him, according to the prosecutor. In one text message, she relayed to a friend that Beushausen had taken a pistol out of his gun safe, which scared her and caused her to take the safe keys and hide them, Paradise said. Paradise vehemently denied that Keith was suicidal,
and said that even Beushausen told police that Keith had never expressed any suicidal feelings. Beushausen’s attorney, Greg Johnson, argued that a bladder syndrome that caused Keith substantial pain, and was another stressor on their relationship, pushed her to take her own life. He said two internet searches were made on her cell phone referencing interstitial cystitis, one on March 12 on “IC depression,” and another on March 15, about 40 minutes prior to when Beushausen called 911, on “IC suicide rate.” Paradise countered that Beushausen used Keith’s phone to call 911 and was seen using her phone after investigators arrived at the apartment. The prosecutor called the searches “a red herring” and “an excuse to plant a seed because this is supposed to be made up
to look like suicide.” She said Keith’s doctor said her illness was “stabilized” and that medication was proving successful in controlling her pain. Johnson contended that Keith was in more pain — both physically and emotionally — then she let on to loved ones, and described her relationship with Beushausen as the final straw in a rough life that included losing both parents and her home, which burned down shortly following her father’s death. In the months following his girlfriend’s death, Beushausen quit his job and moved back to his hometown of McAllen, Texas, where he was eventually arrested by Palm Springs investigators on Oct. 18 in the parking lot of a shopping center. Michael Jackson ‘chemically castrated’ by dad as a boy By Desert Star Staff Michael Jackson’s doctor has claimed the singer’s father “chemically castrated” him as a boy to prevent him from developing – and to maintain his high voice. Conrad Murray, who was Jackson’s personal physician and was imprisoned for two
years for the involuntary manslaughter of the pop music icon, made the claim in a video in which he condemned Joe Jackson, who died last month. “The fact that he [Michael] was chemically castrated to maintain his high-pitched voice is beyond words,” Murray said in a video released by The Blast.
Murray claimed Jackson was given hormone injections when he was 12 in a bid to cure his acne and stop his voice from deepening, an allegation the physician first outlined in his self-published book in 2016. Michael Jackson died in 2009 from an overdose of Propofol and sedatives. He
found fame as a young child while performing along his siblings as ‘The Jackson 5,’ who were managed by their father. Murray claimed Jackson confided in him about “the many sufferings at the hands of his father that he encountered beyond imagination and words.” He said Joe Jackson was “one of the worst fathers to his children in history” and added: “I hope Joe Jackson has found redemption in hell.” A French vascular surgeon
made similar claims in 2011, even writing a book about it. Dr Alain Branchereau said Jackson was chemically castrated from the synthetic anti-male hormone drug Cyproterone. After researching the drug and observing photographs and specialists in the field, Branchereau found it prevents body hair and the larynx growing. It also affects the bones, which can lead to a slight frame and big chest.

Late last month, the 44-member Scientific Advisory Board to the EPA asked the agency not to revise or finalize the rule until the board can analyze it and offer comments. If enacted, the rule could exclude clinical studies derived from human databases, impede the development of new science and exclude historical studies. And while the departure of Pruitt may have come as a surprise late last week, McIntosh-Kastrinsky says the agency is expected to continue its efforts to enact this rule. “Looking at Andrew
Wheeler, who is the nowacting administrator and his background, I’d imagine they will probably proceed with trying to implement this rule,” McIntosh-Kastrinsky states. “However, with all rules that are proposed at the EPA and on the federal level, they have a comment period.” The EPA already has an external review body, known as the Clean Air Science Advisory Committee. Its mission is to provide a diverse and independent peer review of the science considered by the agency when establishing policies.

Beatles’ classic cover celebrates Saudi women driving
By Desert Star Staff Students at the Berklee College of Music in Boston have reimagined The Beatles 1965 hit ‘Drive my Car’ in Arabic, to celebrate the recent lifting of the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia. The cover was arranged by Palestinian cellist Naseem Alatrash and features Syrian singer Nano Raies. The group was named ‘Nano and the 6-2-4,’ a reference to June 24, when Saudi women gained the right to get behind the wheel. According to Alatrash, the recreation is called ‘Rahsoul Say-arah’ which in Arabic means ‘I will drive the car’ and carries a simple message: she’s excited to drive and doesn’t want to get married yet.
“For the translation to the song, I feel like it’s a really simple, funny, kind of goofy message,” Alatrash told Public Radio International, who partnered with the Berklee College of Music to create the cover. “And the main idea is that this female was singing, just got the ability to drive, she’s really excited and at this moment of her life she really doesn’t care about anything else. She’s getting all these proposals from men,” the cellist said. “They are promising her all these things. But, she’s like, at the moment, I just want to drive. Maybe later I will love you, maybe later I will think about these things, but at the moment I just want to drive this car.”

By Desert Star Staff You can worship cannabis in Indiana, even build a church in its name, but no amount of worship for the plant makes you eligible to smoke it, the court has ruled. Indiana’s marijuana law is one of the strictest in the country. Judge Sheryl Lynch has ruled that Indiana’s First Church of Cannabis cannot use weed in its service, stating that “the undisputed evidence demonstrates that permitting a religious exemption to laws that prohibit the use and possession of marijuana would hinder drug enforcement efforts statewide and negatively impact public health and safety.” The non-profit was founded in March 2015 on the heels of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), signed into law by then-Indiana Governor Mike Pence. The legislation asserts that the government cannot “substantially burden a www.desertstarweekly.com
person’s exercise of religion” and those who feel that their religious beliefs were or could be hurt may refer to the law to defend themselves in court. At the time it was approved, the law caused an uproar among civil rights groups, fearing that it could be used to discriminate against the LGBT community. However, Bill Levin, founder and ‘Grand Poobah’ of the Church of Cannabis, apparently saw it as a perfect opportunity to circumvent the state’s draconian drug laws. While medical cannabis is legal in 30 states, and nine permit its recreational use, Indiana still holds on tight to its tough marijuana laws. Virtually from its establishment, the church has been waging a legal battle with the state, arguing that the ban on cannabis violates their religious freedom. The church’s set of guidelines, the “Deity Dozen,” states that cannabis, ‘The
Healing Plant,’ is its “sacrament.” “It is our fountain of health, our love, curing us from illness and depression. We embrace it with our whole heart and spirit, individually and as a group.” In its ruling on that legal conundrum, Lynch argued that the church had not thought of logistics, as to who will supply the plant, where it will be kept, and had not specified how it would be consumed. If the court greenlighted an exemption for the church, the authorities would have to make “case-by-case determinations during criminal investigations as to whether an individual’s religious beliefs legally justify” the use of cannabis, she said. For example, I love watching and playing sports, so I often use that as a reason to travel to various countries.” One area you might be passionate about is food. In fact, 23 percent of Americans say they have planned a trip around a culinary experience, according to a Bank of America survey. Local cuisine also offers a unique glimpse into a culture. “I love attending local food festivals and cultural celebrations,” Abbamonte said. “Just one day at a food or wine festival can give you a great understanding of an area’s culture and people, which is quite literally great ‘food for thought.’”
Have a Credit Card Rewards Strategy Earning points through travel spending is especially popular today. In fact, 65 percent of Americans have a rewards credit card, according to the same Bank of America survey. Yet when it comes time to reap a card’s rewards, 55 percent admit they don’t have a strategy to maximize points. Abbamonte recommends using a credit card that rewards all your purchases and offers extra points where you spend most. “Since traveling and eating out are easily my top two expenses, the Premium Rewards credit card from Bank of America works perfectly for my lifestyle,” Abbamonte said. “I earn two

CV Rep Presented Cabaret Singer Leslie Page In Her New Show “A Tapestry Through Music”

Photo by Shari Lipman By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association ATCA) I’m often asked if I would consent to reviewing Cabaret artists. I love cabaret. The issue is not one of whether I would or would not, it’s a matter of timing. The schedule for my newspaper outlets drive the decision. Usually, cabaret artists perform only one performance, maybe two on a certain date. The time interval is too short for me to see the show, write the review, and send it to my editor, within his deadlines, in order to make the Wednesday Issue. I write and review
for a weekly publication. Believe me when I say I would love to see this cabaret performer or that particular act. The Coachella Valley is jam- packed with talented and gifted club and solo artists of all stripes: comedy, improv, dramatic staged readings, magic acts, monologues, and of course, the singers. There can never be too much arts entertainment in the world of show business for me. Every now and then, despite my time constraints, when the stars are aligned with Venus and the moon… it happens. A door on my schedule opens just wide enough for me slip into a theatre seat or on a bar stool, if it’s being performed
By Pamela Price The 85th season of the iconic Pageant of the Masters, with performances nightly between July 7 and Sept 1, 2018, themed Under the Sun is once again breathtaking from start to finish. While traditionally this legendary event is a series of “living pictures” or tableaux it symbolized much more to loyal fans such as myself. My eyes were opened to this masterpiece of living art since 1962 when the concept of an audience was viewing “living pictures” on stage” was considered both surreal and novel, according to various comments quoted in press reviews. Fast forward to the 2008 Pageant of the Masters, celebrating 75 “Brilliant Years” at their Diamond Jubilee at the Irvine Bowl in Laguna Beach themed “All the World’s Stage.” The magic of living art created by the Pageant Masters continues to thrive as this season’s performance brought laughter, tears, and cheers to the audience as Act One and Act Two mesmerized the audience nonstop. Seated outdoors in the still of a moonlit night, the evening event began at 8:30 PM as ab illuminated view of Pageant history debuted with the stage
framed with The Mission Era and tableaux of an oil painting by J. Henry Sandham, Toll for Sunrise Mass, Pala Mission. This era was concluding with a theme of 8 “living pictures” themed New Waves. This reflected the art and music between 1969 to 2008 by revealing in oil on canvas, mosaic mural, bronze, lithograph and acrylic ocean inspired themes representing Laguna Beach artists from Rex Brandt to James A.Wasil. Churning more Laguna Beach memories with visual verve were compositions titles ranging from The Endless Summer to Pleasures Along the Beach. Nostalgia emanating from the Laguna Beach art colony continues to define a national treasure. The drama of it all brought both smiles and a few nostalgic tears to those in the audience. Act Two began with Monet: The Father of Impressionism before delving into Paul Gauguin’s Polynesian Sunset, as the dazzling narration by Richard Doyle mesmerized the audience enhanced by the Pageants orchestra once again under the direction of Corey Hirsch. His unique talent gifts the Pageant’s audience with magical musical memories. Pageant history reveals that
in a restaurant and enjoy the talent that is available for all see. The trick is to cover the event, review the work, before the artists’ moves on to his or her next gig. Last Saturday, July 7th, CV REP artistic director Ron Celona invited me to see a new talent to the Valley and to watch her perform in her new One Woman Cabaret show titled “Leslie Page: A Tapestry Through Music”. The show is creatively and sensitively directed by Mr. Celona, who becomes the wind beneath her feet as she draws her audience toward her. She’s a wonderful technician who uses her voice as if it’s a musical instrument, complete with key changes
and musical riffs on top of more riffs that are breathtaking in their execution. I was immediately reminded of a young Sarah Vaughan. The ‘Divine Sarah’ could hold an audience spellbound with her unique style, where she could convert her voice into an alto saxophone sound and entertain her audiences for hours with ease. Leslie Page has been an established professional singer/ performer for over ten years. She weaves a compelling musical story of her career to the audience between song sequences. Her range is both vocally broad in performance and in the selections she performs from the CV REP stage. She is a big fan of R & B, sings ‘country’ like an angel, but was born in California. Ms. Page is the possessor of a silky, smoky and sultry voice and delivery that will please audiences and fans of not only the American Song Book, but of songs written by the best of the country’s composers and song writers. Why haven’t I heard of you before tonight? I candidly asked her when we had a conversation following her performance, she replied saying, “I’ve been singing since I was four years-old. My professional work resume has taken me all over the country. In Los Angeles and Hollywood, and NYC performed as a backup singer for TV, and Movie
sound tracks for several years and recently I’ve discovered the Cruise ship circuit for entertainers that has take me overseas for long periods of time” adding, “but I’m back on dry land now and ready for more exciting musical adventures like tonight.” She’s comfortable with her audience and confident in her skills to win over an audience with her talent, style, and her delivery. And she is very fortunate to have the extremely talented musical accompaniment of Music Director Nick Petrillo, who plays piano and keyboards like a virtuoso, with Dave Johnstone, on drums, and Tabari Lake, on guitar. All three gentlemen are graduates of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. They’re a very formidable trio of top musicians. The CV REP technical staff of Lighting Designer and Technical Director Moira Wilkie Whitaker, and Doug Morris, Stage Manager make this splendid show a special evening indeed. I look forward to seeing this talented lady perform in the Coachella Valley in the future. Ms. Page certainly made a believer out me with her mesmerizing performance earning her richly deserved standing ovation that she and the production received from the audience.

Bipartisan Bill Would Fund Large Chunk of Park Maintenance By Desert Star Staff HELENA, Mont. – A bill to address the crumbling infrastructure in America’s national parks is scheduled for a congressional hearing this week. The Restore Our Parks Act would provide up to $6.5 billion over the next five years to chip away at national parks’ growing maintenance backlog, estimated to be more than $11 billion. Patrick Tabor, owner of Swan Mountain Outfitters in Glacier National Park, praises the bipartisan support behind this bill as well as U.S. Sen. Steve Daines’ work on it. Tabor says right now, the meager funds available for parks aren’t cutting it. “It’s an issue of prioritization,” he states. “So, it seems like when the money finally does come in, they can only get after things that are nearly falling down, instead of getting ahead of it.”
The bill has support from Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and conservation groups. It would use funds generated from onshore and offshore drilling. The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources’ Subcommittee on National Parks holds a hearing on the bill on Wednesday. According to The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Restore America’s Parks campaign, the maintenance backlog in Montana is $217 million for roads, trails, restrooms and more. Rebecca Knuffke, an officer with the campaign, says addressing these needs also would create jobs. “A recent Pewcommissioned analysis found that if we fix all of our deferred maintenance, we could support or create at least 110,000 jobs, with over 2,000 jobs in Montana alone,” she points out. Tabor maintains the

Among professionals in the 28 U.S. cities surveyed, those in Des Moines, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Salt Lake City are most attracted by a bigger salary. In terms of gender, 47 percent of women would resign if offered more money elsewhere, compared to 40 percent of men.
Whatever the reason for leaving, employees should have a good exit plan when parting ways with a company. In a separate survey of HR managers, 83 percent said the way someone quits affects their future career opportunities. Workers were asked, “Thinking of your current job, what is the most likely reason you would quit?” HR managers were asked, “How does the manner in which someone quits a job affect that person’s future career opportunities?”

Government Watchdogs: Both Pruitt, Wheeler “Wrong” for EPA By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON – Government ethics and watchdog groups, even some conservatives, are saying Scott Pruitt’s resignation as Environmental Protection Agency administrator is long overdue. During his one-year tenure, Pruitt worked relentlessly to dismantle Obama-era regulations aimed at reducing pollution. But while most conservatives saw him as President Donald Trump’s most effective Cabinet member, he started to lose favor over misuse of power and spending a lot more taxpayer dollars than his predecessors on travel and security expenses. David Jenkins, president of Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship, thinks Pruitt was never the right person for the job. “I don’t see how anyone on the conservative side of the equation, that’s really a conservative – and you know, understands personal
responsibility and ethics, moral values, all those things – I don’t see how anyone could be supportive of him after all the things that have happened,” says Jenkins. Jenkins says now, Trump should follow the lead of Ronald Reagan, who once was in a similar situation, by appointing someone who sees the value and mission of the EPA. The agency’s current deputy administrator, Andrew Wheeler – a former coal-company lobbyist – steps in as acting EPA chief until a permanent replacement is named. Environmental groups predict the Trump administration will continue its pattern of appointing the least likely candidate to head the agency. Kara CookSchultz, director of U.S. PIRG’s (Public Interest Research Group) toxics program, thinks the president should take time to really understand the purpose of the EPA. “Scott Pruitt has failed in the EPA mission to protect

Red Cross reports emergency blood shortage
By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, - The American Red Cross issued an urgent call today for eligible individuals of all blood types to give now and help save patient lives following a difficult Fourth of July week for blood donations. Type O in particular is critically needed right now to replenish the blood supply. Fewer blood donors and fewer blood drives during the Independence Day holiday week have escalated the Red Cross call for blood and platelet donors to help ensure hospital needs are met. More than 550 fewer blood drives were held the week of July 4 than an average week as people across the country enjoy vacations. In addition, AAA reported that a record 46.9 million Americans were expected to take trips to destinations 50 miles from home during the holiday period of Tuesday, July 3, through Sunday, July 8, potentially making donors less available to give during the week. “Blood donations are currently being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in – we need both new and current blood donors to make an appointment as soon as possible to help patients battling illness and injury,” said Chris Hrouda, president of Red Cross Blood Services. “Unlike many other lifesaving medical treatments, blood donations cannot be manufactured and stockpiled. Red blood cells have a shelf-life of only 42 days and platelets just five days – Each donation, each day makes a difference.” It is crucial that the Red Cross has sufficient blood supply on hand to meet the needs of patients every day and to be prepared for emergencies that require significant volumes of blood. The summer season is traditionally a difficult time to collect enough blood to meet patient needs as high schools and college blood drives account for as much

as 20 percent of donations during the school year. Every day, blood and platelets are needed for accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. Patients like Jacqueline Rogers depend on the generosity of committed blood donors. When Jaqueline was born, she was diagnosed with complex congenital heart disease and by the age of nine she needed a second open heart surgery. On the way to the surgical floor, her family was told the operation would have to be delayed due to lack of available blood products. “Something was wrong – there wasn’t enough O negative blood. They said you can’t have surgery,” said Jacqueline. “I thought I was going to die.” For a child in need of lifesaving blood, such news can be scary and confusing. Thankfully, Jacqueline was able to have her much-needed surgery in the days following, but she and her family will always remember that day when the blood needed was missing from hospital shelves. On June 11, the Red Cross launched the Missing Types campaign, which runs throughout the summer, to encourage new donors, and those who have not given recently, to donate blood. As part of the campaign, the letters A, B, and O – letters used to identify blood types – disappeared from corporate logos, favorite brands, social media and frequently visited websites to illustrate the critical role every blood donor plays. Many may not realize just how important the letters are, but for a hospital patient who needs type A, B or O blood, those letters mean life. As lovely as it is, one song does not, however, make for a memorable musical production no matter how hard everyone tries. Also, the off-stage orchestra needs to ratchet down at least two levels so we can hear and appreciate the
dialogue and understand the lyrics, as well as reduce the dialogue delivery from warpspeed to something closer to traditional speech patterns. There are twenty-five cast members working hard to please. “The Wedding Singer”, will no doubt, resonate with younger audiences more easily than with their parents and grandparents tastes. Helping to tell “The Wedding Singer” story are: Alisha Bates as Holly; Leslie Benjamin as Angie; Elissa Landi as Rosie; Cameron Merrihew as Glen; Keith T. Nielsen as
George; Christian Quevedo as Sammy; , and Tessa Walker as Linda, along with sixteen performers in the ensemble. The orchestra, led by Music Director Jaci Davis on piano features: David Bronson on drums, John Pagels on guitar, and Bill Saitta on Bass. “The Wedding Singer” directed and choreographed by Anthony Nannini, performs at the Palm Canyon Theatre through July 15, 2018.
