“Welcome Samuel & Ian” Coachella Valley Firebirds Sign First Two Players By Desert Star Staff PALM SPRINGS, Calif.— Today, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, the 32nd AHL team debuting in Fall 2022 and the affiliate of the NHL Seattle Kraken, announced the signing of their first two
players in team history, Samuel Buček [b-EWE, sec] and Ian McKinnon. This announcement comes after the team was officially recognized by the AHL as the 32nd franchise and follows the recent
hires of head coach Dan Bylsma and assistant coach Jessica Campbell. “We are building a team that leads with skill, tenacity, and impact on and off the ice,” said Firebirds head coach Dan Bylsma.
“Both Samuel Buček and Ian McKinnon have the potential to be strong leaders for our team, and we anticipate them having a solid impact in the AHL.” Samuel Buček, 23, the organization’s first player to be signed, was the top scorer in Slovakia’s
professional league. The 6-foot 3-inch, 205-pound winger led ExtraLiga scorers with 41 goals and 64 points while playing for HK Nitra last season, adding another 13 goals and 11 assists in 19 playoff Continues on Page 7
Colin Blunstone Celebrates The Zombies’ Legacy Ahead of Pappy & Harriet’s Show By Robert Kinsler Who: The Zombies, Rooney Where: Pappy and Harriet’s, 53688 Pioneertown Road, Pioneertown, CA When: July 21, 2022 (doors open at 6 p.m.; show at 8 p.m.) Information: PappyandHarriets.com
Ahead of The Zombies’ forthcoming headlining performance at Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown on July 21, lead singer Colin Blunstone discussed the enduring power of the pioneering English rock
troupe. Blunstone — who celebrated his 77th birthday on June 24 — remains one of rock music’s greatest vocalists and is as passionate about making music today as he was when the Zombies were formed more than 60 years ago. When the Zombies perform in the California high desert on July 21, they will perform their beloved 1960s material as well as top-tier songs from recent albums and their not-yettitled ninth studio album. “It’s finished, actually – it was finished about 8-10

Colin Blunstone Celebrates The Zombies’ Legacy Ahead of Pappy & Harriet’s Show Continued from Page 1 weeks ago,” Blunstone said of the group’s forthcoming album in a recent interview. “We’ve already been to America once this year – mostly on the East Coast. Just before we landed for that first tour (of 2022) — we flew on the 26th of March and the album was finished in that week before we left. So it’s completely finished. I don’t have a release date and I don’t even have a title. I do know the album is finished and it’s interesting because we realized that we like to record with everyone in the studio at the same time... It just gives you that extra energy that we’re playing off one another’s performances. “ In addition to Blunstone and original keyboardistvocalist Rod Argent, the Zombies lineup includes drummer Steve Rodford, guitarist Tom Toomey and bassist Søren Koch. Because the Zombies record in the studio together, the pandemic impacted the process of completing their latest album. “Because of the
pandemic it wasn’t really that easy,” Blunstone said of the effort to complete a follow-up to the acclaimed 2015 album Still Got That Hunger. “None of us live close to one another in the U.K. And our bass player Søren Koch actually lives in Denmark. There were only specific times we could get together because a lot of the times in those first two years it was very difficult. You weren’t really allowed to mix (together) in a studio situation. So one way or another, we managed to get an album done. We’re really excited about it.” The Zombies previewed several of the new songs in their only appearance of 2021, a global livestream of their concert live from Abbey Road Studios. That concert event was filmed and is now available as a CD+DVD release titled “The Zombies Live From Studio Two”; the title is available for sale exclusively at the band’s concert dates. The upcoming date in Pioneertown will mark the Zombies’ first-ever appearance at legendary Pappy and Harriet’s.
“I have heard of the reputation of this place and how unusual it is. I’m very much looking forward to going there,” Blunstone said. The Zombies’ original run lasted from their formation in 1961 until they completed the recording of their 1968 masterwork Odessey and Oracle (the album was ranked number 100 on Rolling Stones’ 2012 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time). Incredibly, the group returned in 1999 and has now soared to new heights that included their well-deserved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Blunstone admits he is amazed at the band’s celebrated second act. “I’ve learned in the music business that you never know what’s gonna happen. And literally, anything can happen anytime. You’re quite right. The Zombies first got together in ’61 and we finished in ’67. So I think it was about (another) year before ‘Time Of The Season’ was a hit in the States. Kind of strange that it was a hit a year after the band ceased to exist. “With this band what happened really was I had a
solo band and my keyboard player – a lovely bloke, a great player – he had an Achilles Heel in that if anybody asked him to play a concert of his songs he would just go off and just forget about all these other obligations. So I kept showing up to concerts and not having a keyboard player. I had six dates left on a tour and I thought, I’ll just take a chance and see if Rod (Argent) would do these six dates. He was very much involved as a producer at that time. He was having a lot of success and I had no idea if the thought of playing live again would appeal to him and I think he had mixed feelings but he said to me ‘I’ll do those six dates but I think that will probably be enough for me.’ And he really enjoyed it. Who would know from a chance phone call that we would be touring again for the next twentysomething years – 23 years.” The Zombies continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans with their luxurious and signature style of psychedelic rock that is fused with jazz and baroque pop elements.
Hearing on California Aid-in-Dying Lawsuit California’s aid-in-dying law could be halted depending on a hearing in federal court.

Andrew Flack, 35, a terminally ill patient from Oceanside, just got his from a pharmacy in case the judge grants a preliminary injunction. “I like having this option because there is a tremendous amount of anxiety that comes with dying from cancer, and also the day-to-day pain that you

Indeed, the band was invited to open for Arcade Fire at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in September 2018. “One of the things that really excites us is the new songs get the same sort of reaction as the classic hits, and – also – we can see the people are singing the words to the new songs and that really lifts us when we realize that,” Blunstone noted. “I think from my point of view the most exciting time for me in the Zombies has been seeing this band grow just through touring and playing live – because we haven’t been particularly active in the charts – just word of mouth through our live performances seeing this band grow from a band playing in rooms in the back of pubs to playing really big venues. It has been definitely the most exciting and fulfilling part of my life to see this band – the second incarnation of The Zombies – to see them grow in the way they have.” For more information on The Zombies, visit the band’s official website at TheZombiesMusic.com.

Consumer Group Presses for Better Protections for Used Car Buyers By Suzanne Potter/PNS Consumer advocates are to stop cars with unrepaired recall defects from winding up with new owners. Federal law bans car dealers from selling unrepaired new cars and rental agencies from selling or renting them. Now consumer activists want the feds to forbid car dealers from selling used cars with unrepaired safety recall defects at retail. The Used Car Safety Recall Repair Act would allow the feds to fine dealers that sell unrepaired recalled used cars, even if no one has suffered damages or been harmed. based nonprofit Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, said these cars are ticking time bombs. “In the case of the Takata airbags, they’ve killed dozens of people and injured hundreds more,” said Shahan. “And as time goes on, and the vehicles get older, they’re much more prone to having this problem.” Shahan singled out CarMax, the largest retailer of used vehicles in the nation because they sell cars with unrepaired recalled safety defects once they pass a 125-point safety inspection. CarMax, in a statement, says they share “vehiclespecific open recall information in-store and online to ensure our customers know about open recalls before purchase” and tell the current recall repair system requires manufacturers to pay for repairs at their dealerships, not via independent retailers who are their competitors. Years ago, Shahan said, her group filed a complaint against CarMax with the
Federal Trade Commission, but the FTC ruled they could keep advertising the cars as “safe” as long as they made the disclosure. “It’s very deceptive, especially when they’re advertising that the vehicles have passed an inspection,” said Shahan. “How
could it pass inspection when it has unrepaired safety recall defects?” Shahan encouraged all prospective car buyers to check the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration website to find out whether the car is under recall and, if so, walk away.
The Used Car Safety Recall Repair Act was introduced last year but has not received a hearing or a vote. Disclosure: Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety Foundation contributes to our fund for reporting on Consumer Issues, Environmental Justice, Social Justice
Opening Statements Today in Appeal to Protect DACA
By Desert Star Staff The fate of more than 600,000 so-called “dreamers” hangs in the balance as opening statements are heard today in a case that could make or break the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The Justice Department is appealing a decision last summer that declared DACA illegal. Now the three-judge panel of the 5th Circuit in New Orleans will decide whether to uphold or reject that summary judgment or order a full trial. Attorney Nina Perales. Vice president for litigation at the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund said the state of Texas, which sued to block DACA, should not have standing to sue because it cannot prove the state has been harmed. “Texas has not been able to point to any employers that Texas says hired a DACA recipient instead of a U.S. citizen,” she said. “Texas could never identify a dollar of state money that went to a DACA recipient.” Texas has argued that DACA removes jobs from legal U.S. residents and costs the state money through social services. Gaby Pacheco, an advocate with TheDream. US, said the average age of arrival for DACA participants is seven, and most have lived in the United States for more than 20 years. “Ninety-nine percent
of them have graduated from high school,” she said. “More than 90% of them are recipients working, including more than 340,000 workers deemed essential, including nurses, educators, and those who kept food on our tables

during the pandemic.” Current DACA participants can now stay and renew their work permits, but no new applications are being processed. Congress has not forged a consensus
on immigration reform or a path to citizenship for dreamers. Perales noted that the Biden administration is expected to release a new regulation related to DACA, possibly in August. Source: Public News Service

Having Faith in all of our Accomplishments and Drive for this new Era By Janice Gough When the stock market goes through a significant drop and your portfolio’s value is going lower and lower, it can be challenging to know what to do. However, our instincts make us pay close attention to potential dangers… both real and imagined. So, our subconscious minds compel us to click on bearish headlines, fixate on disasters, worry about elections, buy magazines with gloomy forecasts on their covers and fret over 15% stock market corrections. It’s an emotional time, and mistakes are common when we feel pressure. What about my retirement…? My kid’s college education…? My dreams of financial independence…? Well, when the market takes a nosedive, there are some things you should do and also some things you absolutely, positively SHOULD NOT do. If you own good stocks, do not Sell. When you sell, you have locked in your loss. Considering how far we have come and are still growing thru technology, you should consider taking advantage of buying during “theDIP .” Selecting quality stocks with tremendous growth potential, excellent company management, and producing products we all need are essential considerations in building a stable portfolio. This may be one of the best times to invest in the market!
We can learn a lot by looking at one of the biggest business stories of the past 100 years: Amazon. com Inc. (AMZN). After all, Amazon has gone from a small online bookseller to one of the world’s largest, most influential companies. In 2020, the company’s market value reached $1 trillion. Amazon now sells virtually everything… and its founder, Jeff Bezos, is one of the world’s wealthiest men. Amazon’s market value has increased more than 120,000% since its IPO in 1997. That gain turns every $10,000 invested into a stunning $12 million. You probably also know why Amazon achieved such tremendous success. Its Prime membership program was a big hit. Its mastery of logistics lowered the price of almost everything. Its cloud computing business generated billions of dollars in annual revenue. Humans are hardwired to pay close attention to potential dangers. Recessions, bear markets, and stock market corrections made many headlines but proved to be tiny speedbumps on Amazon’s path to success. What the market did or what made headline news on any specific day is meaningless compared to the power of Amazon’s business model, the massive online shopping trend it rode to success, and its management’s moves. What mattered to Amazon shareholders wasn’t the broad market, interest rates, or presidential elections. What mattered was that Amazon
constantly innovated, delivered value to its customers, and outperformed its competition. What interest rates or the stock market did during these companies’ ascent didn’t matter. Even recessions, bear markets, and stock crashes didn’t matter. Who was president didn’t matter? What mattered was innovation, massive industry trends, delivering value to customers, and intelligent business models. This is why this is so important to you as an investor…If you invest in stocks for the long-term, you are guaranteed to live through bear markets, recessions, and corrections. Even in the modest 15% range, these declines will scare you. They will make you question the idea of owning stocks. Humans are hardwired to pay close attention to potential dangers. As long as you feel confident in what you own, Don’t listen to the noise.
Well, just consider that the stock market has averaged a positive annual return of 10% for the past 100 years. This is because the trend of increasing prosperity powered by free markets and free enterprise is one of the strongest trends in human history. And here’s another important fact… During the 20th Century, stocks appreciated in value by 1,500,000%. A 1,500,000% return turns every $100 invested turns into $1.5 million. And in reviewing the facts, in the 20th Century, they went through many of the same travesties that we have today. U.S. stocks appreciated in value by 1,500,000% during the 20th Century despite all these horrible things. Despite something bad happening every decade, incredible wealth was created by innovative businesses like The Coca-Cola Co. (KO), Ford Motor Co. (F), Apple,
Hershey, Intel Corp. (INTC), Disney, General Electric Co. (GE), McDonald’s, The Procter & Gamble Co. (PG), Wrigley, Tootsie Roll Industries Inc. (TR), Pfizer Inc. (PFE), Microsoft, Walmart Inc. (WMT), Starbucks, and thousands of others. We all know there are problems in America… like debt, poverty, and inequality. They have many people paralyzed by fear. But if you know your history and how powerful American innovation is, you know this is no cause to sell your stocks and crawl into a hole. Janice Gough is a Financial Consultant located at 1111 E. WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN
Inside the Chelsea Hotel’ -A Deep Dive Into This Iconic Hotel Once upon a time in 1960s New York City, the legendary Chelsea Hotel lived. Located at 222 West 23rd Street, between 7th & 8th Avenues, it became a beacon for Bohemian artists and intellectuals immersed in what was then a counterculture movement. It included writers, musicians, artists, poets, and actors. Documentary filmmakers Amélie van Elmbt and Maya Duverdier decided this historic landmark would be a fascinating subject for a documentary, and, indeed, it is. This fantastic film had its World Premiere at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival and its North American Premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival. Executive produced by Martin Scorsese and Lori Cheatle, DREAMING WALLS: INSIDE THE CHELSEA HOTEL is a haunting film that begins with a montage of famous people who passed through the hotel, including Patti Smith, Al Pacino, Marilyn Monroe, Oscar Wilde, Salvador Dali, Milos Forman, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, and superstars of Warhol’s Factory. While in residence, Artur C. Clark penned “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and Alan Ginsberg wrote poems. As the documentary begins, slowly, ever so slowly, cinematographers Joachim Philippe and Virginie Surdej’s penetrating cameras close in on the sign “Hotel Chelsea,” leading us inside, revealing both the former beauty of this historic landmark as well as the chaos attendant to its remodeling. The montage continues, and we are now
inside a stuck elevator where two residents await instructions on how to get it moving again, which is accomplished by one of the workers pressing an exterior button. The elevator is once more operational. We meet an old woman on a walker who is holding her rent check and a gentleman on a cane. It becomes immediately apparent that this building is undergoing a major facelift as we hear the constant din of construction sounds - electric saws and hammering - along with exterior scaffolding and narrow hallways with electrical wires eerily hanging down from pealing ceilings. This upheaval has been ongoing for close to a decade, with the possibility of one more year to go. Gradually, we began to meet some of the long-time resident artists, all of whom were encouraged to move out but decided to stay despite pressure from management and the ongoing disruption of their lives. It’s Christmas, and a married couple decorates their holiday tree with the wife commenting that the construction is a personal attack on the tenants. Who would like to prevent the new owners from completing the makeover, turning their sanctuary into a super exclusive, costly hotel catering to the ultrarich community? A sweet conversation between elderly Merle Lister, who practices Tai Chi, and one of the construction workers. She asks him if he likes his job, and he reveals that after researching the history of
Former dancer/choreographer Merle Lister with her own dance company, dances the mambo with one of the construction workers. Courtesy of Magnolia Pictures the building erected between 1883 and 1885, he senses ghosts living amongst the nooks and crannies and is trying to find their way out. This delightful woman is a former modern dancer who was dance master of the Lister Dance Company. In a delicious moment of spontaneity, they do a slow version of the mambo as he hums a melody. She is one of a handful of holdouts who refuses to move out and endures the challenges they all face as the radical remodel continues. At one point, in preparation for a party, she choreographs a dancer descending, almost floating, down the storied staircase, transitioning from something ethereal to a kinetic, almost stumbling downward movement. Adding to the festivities is a group of singers who perform in four-part harmony. In the meantime, the manager has informed the residents when the renovation is completed. They will have to use the service elevator to avoid bringing attention to their lack
of financial means, which might upset their future ultrarich clientele staying at the super luxurious hotel. Susan, a painter, living in the hotel for a very long time, continues to express her art despite the upheaval all around her and sometimes engages in philosophical discussions such as, “Is it art if no one sees it? Another artist believes that the creation of art comes from a desire to share – not connected to money. Welsh poet Dylan Thomas stayed in Room 205, and someone quotes him: “Do not go gentle into that good night,” which one might assume could act as a battle cry for this determined group to not be forced out by an ambitious new owner. Skilled directors Amélie van Elmbt and Maya Duverdier, along with the fantastic, penetrating work of the cinematographers, whose beautifully framed shots illuminate the daily lives and struggles of the remaining residents who act as a reminder of the glorious days when the hotel was a

Black Rock Art Gallery Opening of Land Escape EscapeExhibition Exhibition
By Desert Star Staff Twentynine Palms, California—Joshua Tree National Park management is pleased to announce a new art exhibition by former Mojave National Preserve Artist in Residence, Natalie Larsen. Land Escape is a series of works on paper about her 2019 residency. Larsen creates a rich depiction of the Mojave Desert through intricate and layered drawings. As the descendent of Mormon pioneers, Larsen has struggled with the complex history present in the desert
landscape and her inheritance of its legacy; however, she says, “when I spend time in the desert, I feel at peace.” A Pittsburg native, she still finds herself creating work about the desert and her family’s ties to its settlement. She was an artist-inresidence before the 2020 fires, and this body of work is a memorial to the Mojave as it was in 2019. Spending significant time in the Cima Dome area, so many of her drawings are of places that are very different now. “It was important to me to work from
a place of remembrance for what I saw in 2019… There is a genre in art called ‘Memento Mori,’ paintings and drawings that reflect on mortality… So, these drawings serve as Momento Mori for the Mojave.” The exhibition will run from July 10, 2022, until August 27, 2022, at the Black Rock Art Gallery in the Black Rock Nature Center. Located at 9800 Black Rock Canyon Rd, Yucca Valley, CA 92284, the building is open weekend hours only, Friday–Monday, 8 am–4 pm. Source: Pam Price

Jacksonville Icemen (ECHL) after splitting the previous two seasons between Providence and Jacksonville. He helped Jacksonville earn a playoff berth in 2021-22, recording a point in two of the four playoff games he played. The 24-yearold has recorded six goals and four assists across 90 AHL/ ECHL regular-season games since turning pro in 2019. Health Centers Call for Action to Protect Low-Cost Drug Program By Desert Star Staff Advocates for community health centers and their patients speak out against drug manufacturers trying to limit a federal lowcost drug program. The 340B program requires manufacturers to offer discounted drugs to pharmacies that contract with federally qualified health centers. But Liz Oseguera, assistant director of policy for the California Primary Care Association, said drug companies are limiting sales to one contracted pharmacy per health center. This forces patients who can’t travel to that single location to pay more at the neighborhood pharmacy. “Because of manufacturers’ limitations, patients have to pay a lot more for those drugs,” said Oseguera. “It could be hundreds more, depending on the drug, and that could happen monthly.”
Drug companies Merck, Sanofi, and Eli Lilly, did not immediately provide comments. But manufacturers have argued in the past that the program rules only require sales to one contract pharmacy per health center. They’re demanding more transparency in the form of claims records from the health centers, which Oseguera called “a nonstarter.” Two weeks ago, the lack of progress in this dispute led supporters to pull a California bill requiring greater access to contract pharmacies. Under the 340B program, centers that operate their pharmacy must reinvest any profit from the insurance payments into patient care. Oseguera said the loss of 340B revenue means some health centers may have to cut back on services. “With this funding, we’re
able to pay for things that usually are not paid in MediCal,” said Oseguera. “All with the help of these 340B savings that we’re not able to acquire otherwise.” The federal Health Resources and Services Administration has
sent letters to six drug companies, warning that their actions against contract pharmacies are illegal and threatening fines. Several companies have filed suit over this issue. The U.S. House passed a bill to strengthen the 340B
program. A similar but more comprehensive version is expected soon in the Senate. Disclosure: National Association of Community Health Centers contributes to our fund for reporting on Budget Policy & Priorities and Health Issues.
By Desert Star Staff The assassin shot exPrime Minister Abe twice in his hometown around 11:30 a.m. on last Friday while delivering a campaign speech in front of the train station. The killer is said to have served in the Japanese military from 2002 to 2005. His motive for the murder: “The suspect stated that he harbored a grudge against a certain organization and committed the act because he believed that former Prime Minister Abe had a connection to it,” a senior police official said at a press conference. According to the TV channel NHK, ex-Prime Minister Abe suffered cardiopulmonary arrest after the shots and collapsed. Abe was taken to a hospital by
helicopter. Nara University Hospital emergency room chief Hidetada Fukushima said the politician sustained a severe injury to his neck artery, causing profuse bleeding and severe damage to his heart. Media reports tried 20 doctors to stop the bleeding. At 5:03 p.m. (local time), Japan’s former prime minister was dead. Tetsuya Y. is said to be a former member of the SelfDefense Forces, reports NHK, citing sources in the Defense Ministry. The ex-military is said to have fired the shots with a homemade rifle. Both shots can be heard on video recordings by reporters. In addition, dramatic scenes take place at the crime scene. Police discovered
explosives in the assassin’s house. During a raid on the apartment of Tetsuya Y. (41) in Nara, police officers found several explosive devices and weapons, as reported by the Japanese local broadcaster “NHK.” The alleged assassin wants to have built both himself, as he had previously told the investigators. Tetsuya Y. has now confessed to the crime. Abe’s successor and party friend Fumio Kishida (64) condemned the attack “strongly.” Hiroyuki Hosoda, Speaker of the House of Representatives, said: “It is an attack on parliamentary democracy and cannot be tolerated.” Abe ruled Japan from December 2012 to September 2020, making
him the country’s longestserving prime minister. Japan is considered one of the safest countries in the world. The island kingdom has stringent gun laws and a zero-tolerance policy toward firearms. The assassination attempt on the politician caused horror around the world. US President Joe Biden (79) paid tribute to Abe
in a statement: “Even at the moment when he was attacked, he was committed to democracy. While we’re new to many notebooks, we know that violent attacks are never acceptable and that gun violence always leaves a deep scar,” Biden said. “The United States stands with Japan at this moment of mourning. I offer my deepest condolences to his family.”

That’s Amore? The City of Venice is About to Charge You to Visit By Desert Star Staff Venice is sinking, but it’s not from all that water — it’s the fees. Venice, the European city that most closely resembles a theme park, will become one in a matter of months in everything but name, thanks to a recent decision by the city council to charge tourists an entrance fee. This summer, admission is still free, but starting in January, any tourist with the temerity to want to come to the lagoon city of dark canals and sparkling palazzi for the day will have to pay for that privilege. The fees will range from about $3.15 to $10.50 per person depending on how congested the city is—the busier it gets, the more it will cost. Just how busy it is will apparently be forecast by the number of would-be visitors who will have to log on to an official website to state their intention to visit and receive a QR code that will give them the right to enter. In Italy, rules from on high tend to bend a bit in practice, and hopeful tourists could still try to come to Venice without a QR code, but any who are found strolling about without one risk a fine as high as $315. Despite the sweeping
change in how many people will now have their first taste of what is arguably the most unique city in the world. Few others have streets made of water, and if they do, Venice had them first — there will be no caps on the maximum number of visitors allowed and no turnstiles at the entrances to the city. At least, no plans for such were announced. The AP reported that at a news conference, the deputy mayor, Simone Venturini, said, “We won’t talk about number cutoffs. We’re talking about incentives and disincentives.” He also said that Venice is the only city in the world to put such a system for day-only visitors in the place. But more than a decade ago, some were already calling Venice the first urban theme park. For better or worse, the council’s initiative pushed the city, which resembles an elaborate film set, one step closer to full-on Disneyfication. During the two years of the pandemic, which had as its European epicenter the Lombardy region west of Venice, tourism in the city came to a virtual standstill. Still, in the summer of 2022, overtourism is again rearing. The rationale for the
imposition of fees is that visitors to Venice now vastly outnumber residents and about four-fifths of all tourists come to Venice just for the day. In 2019 around 19 million day-trippers visited Venice against a local population that has dwindled to 50,000. Furthermore, day visitors provide just a fraction of the revenue from those staying for one night or more, with locals complaining that many even bring their meals instead of frequenting
the numerous restaurants and cafes packed into the city’s minuscule two square miles. Mr. Venturini said that the city wants to reduce frictions between day visitors and residents.” Still, the imposition of fees could also be seen as a move to court for longer staying and higher-spending tourists. It is unclear what enforcement mechanisms will be put in place, and there are also several exemptions. For
example, children under six and people with disabilities will not have to pay, nor will those on airport layovers. Hotel guests are already hit with a lodging tax, usually demanded on checkout and in cash, and will not have to pay for or present a QR code next year. But cruise ship passengers, who often throng Instagram hot spots like Piazza San Marco and the Rialto bridge for only a few hours, will have to pay. Source: Pam Price
Reducing Food Insecurity in Infants and Toddlers

ood insecurity isn’t a new problem in the United States, but the economic upheaval created by the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the problem. During the pandemic, households in the United States with children experienced an increase in food insecurity, despite overall rates of food insecurity staying the same. In 2019, 13.6% of households with children were food insecure, but by 2020, that number increased to 14.8%, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In general, child food insecurity rates are higher than overall food insecurity rates, according to the annual Map the Meal Gap study conducted by Feeding America, a nationwide nonprofit network of food banks. According to data from the Children’s Defense Fund, this is particularly prevalent among low-income families, single mother households and Black and Hispanic households.
What Food Insecurity Means for Children
Food insecurity and hunger are closely related but not quite the same. People who are food insecure don’t have reliable, ongoing access to an adequate supply of affordable, nutritious food. Hunger is a physical condition; food insecurity reflects barriers to obtaining food such as finances, physical location and transportation. Infants and toddlers are particularly vulnerable to nutrient deficiencies because their nutrient needs are high, especially in relation to the size of their stomachs and appetites. Caregivers in food-insecure households may have little choice but to settle for cheaper, energy-dense but nutrient-poor foods. As a result, food-insecure infants and toddlers are not receiving adequate nutrition even when they may be receiving enough calories to satisfy hunger. Even if a child isn’t physically starving, inadequate nutrition can negatively affect health in numerous ways, including immune system function, low weight, learning and developmental delays, vitamin deficiencies and more.

Participate in (or introduce those in need to) aid programs. Government nutrition assistance programs help provide essential nutrition needs during infant and toddler years. One example is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), which provides a variety of resources including food and health care referrals to support mothers and young children at nutritional risk, including pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, as well as infants and children up to age 5. Another example is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides benefits low-income families can use to purchase nutritious foods. For children and adults who are enrolled in certain care programs, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) helps ensure they have access to nutritious meals and snacks. Make purchases that work extra hard. In addition to producing foods that encourage better nutrition for children, some brands also make contributions that help offset food insecurity. Act as a role model for healthy choices. Children learn by example, so be sure your little ones see you enjoying nutritious snacks, filling your plate with appropriate portions and preparing well-rounded meals. When kids are exposed to a wide range of healthy options early in life, those food choices become the norm as they grow older. Volunteer at a food bank. Getting hands-on by donating your time at a local food bank can help you understand the complexity of food insecurity. Many nutritious selections are perishable, and transporting and storing perishable goods is costly. Volunteers help offset a food bank’s operational expenses by contributing labor to sort donated items, prepare deliveries and more.
