Germany Wins World Cup Germany’s players lifts the World Cup trophy as they celebrate their 2014 World Cup final win against Argentina By Desert Star Staff Germany has claimed a fourth World Cup crown in a 1-0 win against Argentina after extra time in the final in Rio de Janeiro. Substitute Mario Goetze was the hero, as he scored the only goal with seven minutes to go. With that triumph Germany has become the first European nation to win the trophy in South

America, which led to jubilant scenes both on the pitch and back home, with millions of fans celebrating their feat. However, Joachim Low’s side had to do it the hard way, as they got off to a very slow start. Argentina was by far the better side during the first half, but Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi missed two scoring

opportunities. Higuain had also had a goal rightly disallowed for offside. Argentina was left to rue its wastefulness in front of goal as the match wore on and Germany began to dominate. Neither side was able to score in normal time, which sent the game into 30 minutes of extra time. Argentina had its third excellent opportunity of

Good Rules to Know when Enrolling in Medicare if you are covered under a large-group plan of over 20 employees. If entitled, you are automatically enrolled in Part A of Medicare (Hospital, Skilled Nursing, Blood, and Hospice) and Part B (Professional Services) the first of the month in which you turn age 65. You must pay an extra premium for Part B, approximately $110 per month. When turning 65 or when leaving a group plan, you have a seven-month time frame to enroll in any plan and have it guaranteed issued. Medicare’s By Janice Gough basic plan has deductibles Many people do not realize and co-payments, which are that Medicare is mandatory after the patient’s responsibility to age 65. The only exception is pay. Many people are unaware that there is no Stop-loss for these costs, when solely having Medicare Parts A & B. This could cause you to pay substantial amounts of money if you experience a healthcare catastrophe. To avoid this possible huge loss, you must be enrolled in Part B (Professional services) and enroll in either a W E E K L Y Supplement plan or a Medicare advantage plan. handles this situation, in order to remove the penalty. Medicare Bridge plans may be purchased by those not entitled to Medicare and must wait five years to purchase Parts A & B. This may include over age 65 enrollees who have never paid into Medicare. Medicare Supplement plans are standardized, but prices are not. Medicare drug and Medicare advantage plans change year to year, requiring annual reviews of existing plans and survey of new offerings. These plans are priced according to the area you live. Changes to a new plan can be made during an Annual enrollment period, a Special enrollment period or by using Birthday Rule enrollment. Medi-Cal and Medicare (MediMedi) enrollees can change at any time. A good item to keep in mind is that drug plans may have different formularies (preferred drug lists) for each plan an insurance carrier offer and can change annually. You should evaluate your current drug list each year to make sure that you are paying the least amount overall, which includes the premium plus co-payments.

Some of the services not covered by Medicare and their average cost are: homemaker services, ($18 per hour), Home aide services ($19 per hour), adult day care ($61 per day), assisted living ($3,300 per month), semiprivate nursing home ( $200 per day) and Private Room nursing home ( $222 per day). These are National averages and will vary according to area and types of services provided. Considering the inflation rate at 5 percent, the cost of long-term care will be $200,000 per year, in 20 years. There are three ways to pay for longterm care: insurance, private pay, or Medicaid. For those who would not want to be in a Medicaid qualified facility or who wish to protect their assets, Long-Term Care insurance is a major consideration for future protection.

Dear Mr. Richardson: We live in a small condominium complex with relatively low monthly dues. My concern is that the Board of Directors has not complied with Civil Code 5300 requiring the Board to provide the owners with a Budget 30-60 days prior to the beginning of the fiscal year. Here we are starting the 6th month of the new year, and still no budget has been provided. When asked over the months, the board’s stock reply was, they’re working on it - but still no budget. Lately they now say the management company is working on it. Some of us are concerned that we may get hit with a large assessment. Losses still Mounting from Great Recession

By Kevin Powell New research shows many of us are worse off than we were before the start of the Great

Recession. A recent study by the Russell Sage Foundation found that the average wealth of an American family to be 43%

By Angela Monroe Palm Springs -- Sunday was the final night of the Palm Springs Tattoo Convention. It brought thousands to town for the inaugural event. Tattoo artists from across the country came to the HardRock Hotel to show off their work. Throughout the weekend, the Hard-Rock Hotel in downtown Palm Springs was all thing’s ink.

Over 100 tattoo artists from across the country attended the weekend’s convention which included a pool party, bikini contest, live music, and a tattoo contest with close to 2,000 people attending throughout the weekend. “It was insane in and out everyone was having a good time, big smiles all day. I’ve got to thank the Hard Rock for putting on a great event as well. They helped us out tremendously,”

The biggest variable in how much damage families have suffered is how much households had in the stock market. The stock market is about 25% higher today that it was at its peak in 2007. But housing is still 18% below the peak values it reached in 2006. Even families in the 75th income percentile (the highest 25% of all income earners) have a lower net worth today than they did ten years ago. Not percentile has exceeded the average peak values they saw in 2007. The top 5% of American household’s net worth ten years ago was approximately $1.2 million. Sage research showed those families net worth to be about $1.4 million today. This report is disturbing and goes against many reports by the Fed. The majority of the Fed’s reports use banking data and not family net worth. This study backs up one of my biggest complaints about the slowest recovery in the history of lower today than 2007 and 36% our country. That is it has been lower than a decade ago. Lower a very narrow recovery. Wall income families have suffered the Street has benefited much more largest losses. than Main Street America, and

that has to change. Fed policy has not helped the average American. Perhaps the biggest disappointment has been the total failure of political leaders on both sides of the fence to provide any real relief to those who most need it. More Americans today are receiving some type of government assistance than ever before in history. Nearly one in four of us is receiving help. That’s mind boggling. The participation rate in the labor market is the lowest in nearly fifty years coming in at 62.8% last month. That means 38% of Americans who are employable are not working. The elections this fall will go a long way to determining if we see any real relief for many Americans. They will also have a huge impact on business going forward. We’ve got to expect more from our elected leaders. We have no one to blame but ourselves if we don’t.

said event coordinator, Sean Wood. Wood says that with such a great turnout, he’s happy to help boost the local economy. “For Palm Springs, especially, I think it’s huge. We’re bringing revenue into this valley at a time when revenue is usually lacking or slows down for a lot of small businesses. So, we’re hoping to grow and grow year by year and make this event something that Palm Springs is known for. So that people come next year and the year following

resident, Jimmy McShay. Many artists like Jeff Seeds of Yucaipa are using the event to expand their clientele and bring their services to valley residents. Just happy to be out herewith my shop Artistic Element, and it’s just a excellent turnout. It’s good to get out of over here in the Palm Springs Valley and reach out to the population that’s out here. We’re off to a great start,” said Seeds.

Anyone looking for a new tattoo had some of the best artists in the country to choose from. “I always wanted to get a tattoo of my dog but wasn’t really sure how to do it or whereabouts to go, and considering all these great artists that are down here for the show; I came down here to take a shot. by Art Kunkin Mr. Life Extension Why should you consider keeping a dream journal? For one thing, a dream journal can be a valuable window into your inner world, into your soul. When you see recurring, patterns in your dreams and/or have vivid dreams you will not only gain insight into what you need to correct but often get clues as to how to do what is necessary to become more happy. Ultimately, it will be a fun exercise, one that helps you to make sense of your subconscious world. Keeping a dream journal requires some self-discipline, but once you’re in the habit of keeping one, it’s likely to be a long-term source of reassurance and interest. Here is how to keep a dream journal: Find a suitable notebook. • You can easily avoid the expense of purchasing a dream notebook with pre-printed section headings from a local stationery story by making your own. If you want to be able to sort pages into themes (for example, “Recurrent Dreams,â€? “Dreams about cats,â€? etc.), then it might be helpful to use a loose leaf three-ring notebook that lets you reshuffle the pages easily. • Consider using a basket or other storage place for your dream journal and markers. This allows you to keep all the things needed sitting neatly and ready for use at any time. If you have your journal supplies in a basket, it can be easily moved about and into a drawer or cupboard space when cleaning or to keep away from prying eyes.

Make a physical space for your dream journal. • A dream journal is best written when you wake up so the best place for to keep it is next to your bedside. You’re likely to forget your dream if you have to rummage around for something to write on so make this part of keeping a dream journal as easy as possible! • Another good idea is to keep a book reading light by your bedside. If you wake up in the middle of the night and want to write a dream into your journal, having the light easily accessible will enable you to do this before forgetting the dream. If you prefer speaking into a recorder, be sure to have it handy.

also like to note down how you’re feeling. The feelings that you have on going sleep may have an important influence on the dreams you experience during the night. Therefore, keeping a quick note of these feelings before you go to sleep and start dreaming can be very helpful. Leave space after recording each dream for adding interpretation notes. The most important thing is to get the dream written down. How you interpret the dream afterwards is less urgent. Make New Habits. • Use specific self-talk phrases to easily put yourself to sleep. Include phrases to remind your subconscious that you expect to be writing your dreams in the morning. Look at the many articles in Wikipedia and Wikihow to get good ideas on having, controlling, and influencing you’re dreaming.

• It is very important not to move as you wake up and use that very precious “still timeâ€? to remember your dream or dreams. Then reach out for your pen or pencil or microphone. Name each dream. • It’s a good habit to get into naming your dreams and giving them a three, four or five word title. In reducing each dream to a title, try to capture the main feeling or theme behind it. It’s an easy way for you to find the dream again for future reference.

Review your progress. • Initially, it might be difficult to remember enough of a dream to write more than a few lines. Persevere because as the dream Write the date for the next journal becomes a habit., it will entry in after each entry is become easier to remember completed. more and more elements of the • That way, you don’t have dream. Welcome to Barbra’s Cellar “Buyer & Cellar,” written by Jonathan Tolins, directed by Stephen Brackett and starring Michael Urie, is —in a word— hilarious. The idea for this totally original comedy concept came to the playwright Tollins after reading Barbra Streisand’s 2010 coffee-table book “My Passion for Design” with photographs by the diva as well. In her book, she showcases all the treasures in her estate home and in her, very special basement that contains a movie-set-like street of shops that house her collection of dolls, costumes and antique furniture. Since her collection of stuff was so overwhelming, she created this fantastic cellar of faux shops to showcase all the great acquisitions that wouldn’t fit comfortably in her fabulously extravagant Malibu home. This much of the story is true, but everything else is the product of Tollin’s fertile imagination says Urie before he steps on stage and into his, many roles in this off-Broadway hit that has finally

arrived in L.A. And the openingnight audience laughed it up, enjoying all the local references as well as the little jabs aimed at mega-star Babs, who is one of the characters in this one-man tour de force. Urie has performed in countless theatrical roles, but may be most familiar to audiences as Marc St. James on TV’s “Ugly Betty.” In “Buyer & Cellar” he glides like “buttah” from one character to another as he plays Alex More, an out-of-work actor hired to be the pretend manager of the mall shops in the ‘cellar,’ Alex’s judgmental boyfriend and confidant, Streisand’s house manager, her husband, James www.desertstarweekly.com

Not rated. On July 22 Warner Bros. “Transcendence,” staring Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD and will feature interviews with the all-star cast. In the film, Depp plays Dr. Will Carter, the foremost

researcher in the field of artificial intelligence, who is attempting to create a machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him a target of antitechnology extremists who will do anything to stop him. Rated PG-13. “Five Dances,” available on DVD July 29, is the coming of age tale of a gifted young dancer who

comes to New York City to pursue his career. The film, a visually sensual glimpse of life and first love in the contemporary dance world, was shot primarily in and around a Soho dance studio with original dances by the internationally renowned choreographer Jonah Bokaer. With a cast of five of New York’s most talented dancers, the film captures the emotional turbulence and creative excitement of a small dance company during the process of creation. Not rated.

The Tribe’s former general counsel, Gary Kovall also pled guilty to a felony count and will be sentenced by Judge Fitzgerald on September 29, 2014. “We are pleased that Judge Fitzgerald imposed nearly two years in prison and a financial judgment as well,” said Darrell Mike, Tribal Chairman for Twenty-‐Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians. “This decision reinforces the notion that if someone takes advantage of Native Americans, they will be held accountable.” Prior to the sentencing, Heslop pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, cheating the Twenty-‐Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians Tribe out of millions of dollars related to construction and real estate transactions. Heslop orchestrated multiple fraudulent transactions unbeknownst to the Tribe. Kovall negotiated multiple construction contracts with Paul Phillip Bardos, a general contractor from Rancho Cucamonga, who in turn, kicked back hundreds of thousands of dollars to Heslop. Heslop then forwarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to Kovall and his wife. Bardos has also

pled guilty for tax evasion. In imposing the sentence, Judge Fitzgerald stated on the record that the severity of the sentence was in part to send a message of deterrence to Indian Country advisors that violation of federal laws designed to protect Tribes from dishonest advisors and consultants would not be tolerated. Professor Heslop was previously an advisor to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and also a former professor of political science at Claremont McKenna College and founder of the conservative think tank, the Rose Institute. Bardos, a former student of Heslop, and Kovall were all participants in the Institute.

The Coachella Valley is a safe haven for animal’s thanks to our community’s unconditional support. “This year’s Pets on Parade was a success for our pet community. It is fulfilling Lindi Biggi’s dream of “a no kill shelter Coachella Valley” that we can all be proud about. The overwhelming turn out today combined with a concern to adopt and respect pets, in a larger sense is a role model for other communities,” said Miriam Weigel, publisher of the Desert Pet Companion. “The amazing support of Pets on Parade, despite this being July and having to deal with 105 degree heat today shows what is being accomplished by those who care for animals, in our community!” said Sid R. Veterans, Newcomers Featured on New Releases Summer 2014 continues to yield musical pay dirt thanks to the far-flung talents of singersongwriter Morrissey, heartland hero John Hiatt, Americana trio Puss n Boots and synth pop outfit Magic Man. Artist: Morrissey Title: World Peace Is None of Your Business (Harvest/Capitol) You might like if you enjoy: The Smiths, Morrissey’s previous solo albums Tell me more: It would be impossible to find an artist as adept as Morrissey at tapping into their biggest self-doubts and fears while also being able to confidently poke their finger into the collective eye of humanity. The former Smiths front man maybe 55, but sings with the nuance and force of someone half his age on

his new disc “World Peace Is None of Your Business.” There is simply no subject off limits and just about everyone will likely be offended somewhere along the way; the title track questions the success of mass protest and even voting, the decidedly-Smiths sounding “Staircase at the University” looks at student suicide, while “The Bullfighter Dies” champions the bull over the matador. And the music across the disc is glorious, with an intoxicating mix of alt rock, flamenco, post-punk and art damage providing the perfect backdrop for the confessional icon to sing away. Information: harvestrecords.com. Artist: John Hiatt Title: Terms of My Surrender (New West Records) You might like if you enjoy: John Prine, Kris

Kristofferson, Nils Lofgren Tell me more: Keeping it real is in John Hiatt’s DNA. One of America’s greatest living songwriters, his newly-released “Terms of My Surrender” marks another essential sonic incursion by the Indiana native. Mortality is tackled on “Long Time Coming,” probing look at faith via the acoustic blues of “Face Of God” and haunting gospel-tinged Delta ode “”Wind Don’t Have to Hurry.” The beautiful title track looks at love with depth wonderfully at odds in an age where the world seems to live for the moment. A much-recommended deluxe edition of “Terms of My Surrender” (available via Amazon.com) includes a bonus DVD with a live performance by Hiatt captured at the Franklin Theatre in Franklin, Tenn in 2013. Information: JohnHiatt.com.

Artist: Puss n Boots Title: No Fools, No Fun (Blue Note Records) You might like if you enjoy: Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson, Catherine Popper Tellme more: Noted singers Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper having been working together since 2008, but only now released a full-length LP. “No Fools, No Fun” showcases the three talented artists (dubbed Puss n Boots) playing a variety of instruments and singing with tangible warmth. Among the best songs on the wonderful collection is a sparse acoustic take on Robbie Robertson’s “Twilight,” a high kickin’ country foray on the original Norah Jones gem “Don’t Know What It Means” and a haunting translation of Neil Young’s classic “Down By the River” recorded live. Information:

BlueNote.com.

Artist: Magic Man Title: Before the Waves (Columbia Records), You might like if you enjoy: Phoenix, Passion Pit, the Postal Service Tell me more: New Englandbased Magic Man is more than simply another entry on the burgeoning neo-New Wave synthpop movement. The group’s Columbia Records debut “Before the Waves” boasts the upbeat indietronica-pop of “Out of Mind,” decidedly melancholy-rich strains of “It All Starts Here” and melodic perfection of “Paris.” Produced by Alex Aldi “ (Passion Pit, Holy Ghost!),Before the Waves” is bound together by Alex Caplow’s shining vocals. Figure Skaters Showcased in Hot Summer Ice Show By Angela Monroe CATHEDRAL CITY -- Desert Ice Castle in Cathedral City invited valley residents to it’s ice skating spectacular, the Hot Summer Ice Show on Saturday. The Ice Castle’s fundraising event Hot Summer Ice Show brought some of the world’s best skaters of all ages right here to the valley. “It’s a really big thing not just for us, obviously, but for everyone in the desert to experience what figure skating is all about in there back yard,” said event organizer, Caroline Liu. With so many elite skaters from across the globe being showcased, there was definitely a lot of excitement in the air. “The skaters are really excited. This is the first time we’re actually putting on a show here at Desert Ice Castle and the first time we’re running our training program. So, we actually have Olympians, World Class Competitors, Junior world class competitors from six different countries: China, Belgium, Hong Kong, Thailand. So, yeah, it’s really exciting for us all,” said Liu. It was a packed house at the Ice Castle as valley residents showed up to escape the heat,

and watch world class figure skating. “It’s been amazing. We are really thankful for everyone’s support and coming out today and it’s been a lot of fun,” said Liu. “Well this show is really different from what I’ve done and the atmosphere is... it’s not tense. It’s really relaxed and it’s a lot of fun as one of the skaters,” said Thita Lamsam, the 2014 Thai National Champion. Lamsam says that she’s going to use the event to help her in her bright future. “From here I’m going to take personal experience. So, skating in show and in different atmosphere is going to help me in the future,” said Lamsam. Without the pressure of competition, Thita says that she’s just going to go out there, relax, and have fun. “Today I just want to be myself and do my best and make everybody smile,” said Lamsam. All the proceeds from the event will go to the Ice Castle’s future champions program and the high school hockey team. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

By Gitzel Puente LA QUINTA, Ca. - A resident in La Quinta Cove says every time she walks into her backyard, she can smell marijuana and claims

it’s affecting her health. “It smells like skunk and anybody, whoever’s smelled marijuana knows what it smells like, it stinks,” explains

“It was occasional, but now it’s every day, every day we smell it. Sometimes if I step outside at 7:30 in the morning, I smell it,” says Pelligrini. It’s been about three months since this started. She wrote a complaint letter to the homeowner, but never received a response. “So I called La Quinta City Hall, they told me it was not unlawful. Then, I called code enforcement in La Quinta and said it’s not criminal,” says Pelligrini. The City confirms there is no ordinance against the usage of marijuana in a residential area. son, Michael Joseph Anderson. According to the patrolman, his wife Holly called him on his mobile phone at around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday, saying that she was in labor and needed him home immediately. Anderson said he arrived moments later to find Holly about to give birth, at which point he radioed

for medical assistance and assumed the role of a midwife. Michael Anderson was born at 3:53 a.m. He weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was about 18 inches in length. The tot, named for his greatgrandfather, was taken with his mom to Hemet Valley Medical Center, where both are fine,

s p o rt s POWER Baseball Club Finding Playoff Form By daniel maRinelli

POWER infielder Jordan Zimmerman launches an RBI double. (Photo by Dan Marinelli) Palm Springs – By taking two of three from the SCCBL (Southern California Collegiate Baseball League) rival High Desert Heat (8-15 Overall, 4-9 in SCCBL) over the weekend, the Palm Springs POWER (29-6 Overall, 9-3 in SCCBL) have clinched the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year. The POWER were convinced they would sweep the lowly team but the Heat’s game-one starter out of Peru State, Adam Quintana, put a quick end to the POWER’s plan to go undefeated during the three-game stretch. With a mid-90’s fastball and a solid complimentary curve ball, Quintana shut down the POWER offense the entire game. In fact, in the 9th inning, Quintana was still tossing an impressive 92-plus mph. Friday’s loss dropped the POWER to 7-3 in the SCCBL, which left the Palm Springs Stadium tenants only a game ahead of the SCCBL-leading Inland Valley Pirates (22-5 Overall, 10-4 in SCCBL) in the loss column. The loss against the Heat

had been the POWER’s first since July 5th against the non-SCCBL San Diego Force, when the Palm Springs team was, once again, outmatched by a superior starting pitcher. Despite dropping the first of the important three-game set – in what appeared to be a must-win scenario – POWER head coach Harry Gurley made a bold move and elected to go with reliever Nick Madeiros as his game-two starter. “He’s a good pitcher,” Coach Gurley said, “I just ran him out there and thought he could win. I was saving our other starters for our Team San Diego series.” The Santa Clara University pitcher made his manager look like a genius, throwing a complete-game seven-hitter, en route to the POWERs 8th SCCBL victory on the season. “I thought (Nick) did a great job,” Coach Gurley said. “He gave up a run in the first, a run in the second, he settled down and just pitched outstanding. He was getting two pitches over the plate, and it worked out real well for us.”

Madeiros’ performance worked out twofold for the POWER. In pitching all nine innings, the POWER completely rested their bullpen for the series

By KMIR News Staff Los Angeles, Ca. -Federal inspectors at Los Angeles International Airport seized a shipment of 67 giant African

snails, which are classified as ``a very serious threat’’ to agriculture and public health in the United States. Lee Harty of U.S. Customs

and Border Protection said the snails, which weighed about 35 pounds, were in a shipment from Lagos, Nigeria, and were destined for San Dimas. Paperwork accompanying the shipment, seized July 1, described them as being for human consumption. They were being shipped to an address in San Dimas. Native to Africa, the snails are also known as giant African land snails, West African snails, West African land snails, or banana rasp snails. They are considered a public health threat because they often contain parasites. They also eat more than 500 varieties of plants...and if they’re

finale with the Heat. Additionally, Coach Gurley was able to rest all of his starting pitchers at the top of the POWER rotation to be ready for a critical three-game series against Team San Diego earlier this week. On Sunday’s rubber match with the High Desert Heat, Cam Margeris took to the bump, but with an 11-run cushion by the fourth inning, the game was essentially over before Margeris could put his own stamp on the game. “(Run support) allows you to go out and attack,” Margeris said. “You really just focus on getting ahead – first pitch strikes; you are able to do a couple of different things, and not only worry about one run.” With the win in the series finale, the POWER’s league record improved to 9-3, and are still prime position to take first place in the SCCBL. After averaging only three runs in the first two games against the Heat, it is a good sign

for the future to see the POWER break out of the minor slump and score 11 runs. The POWER went on the road this Monday and played a crucial doubleheader against third-place Team San Diego (20-13 Overall, 6-5 in SCCBL). On Tuesday, the POWER and Team San Diego traveled back to Palm Springs Stadium for the series finale. On Wednesday, the POWER finishes their SCCBL season with one last game against the High Desert Heat. Before the SCCBL, playoffs start on July 21, the POWER hosts a three-game series, FridaySunday, against the non-SCCBL SF Seals, and will host a firework’s show immediately following the series opener. All POWER home games start at 7:05 pm., and take place at Palm Springs Stadium.

Yellowstone National Park’s SuperVolcano Yellowstone supervolcano ‘turned the asphalt into soup’ shutting down Natl. Park’s roads

By Desert Star Staff Extreme heat from a massive super-volcano underneath Yellowstone National Park is melting a major roadway at the

popular summertime tourist attraction. Park officials have closed the area to visitors. Firehole Lake Drive, a 3-mileplus offshoot of the park’s Grand

Loop that connects the Old Faithful geyser and the Madison Junction, is currently off limits. Park operators say the danger of stepping on seemingly solid soil

into severely hot water is “high.” “It basically turned the asphalt into soup. It turned the gravel road into oatmeal,”Yellowstone spokesman Dan Hottle said. The affected roadway offers access to the Great Fountain Geyser, White Dome Geyser, and Firehole Lake. “There are plenty of other great places to see thermal features in the park,” park public affairs chief Al Nash told The Weather Channel. “I wouldn’t risk personal injury to see these during this temporary closure.” While thermal activity under the park often gives way to temperature fluctuations that can soften asphalt throughout Yellowstone, Hottle said the latest wave seems worse than usual. “But it’s hard to tell if a thermal area is hotter than normal, because it’s always fluctuating here,” he said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “Road closures are business as usual for us.” Maintenance workers now must lift the melted asphalt from the roadway, then apply sand and lime to soak up any remains, according to Hottle. The spokesman said he hopes the road will be reopened by next week, adding that he does not believe the activity will significantly curb visits to the park. Yellowstone’s supervolcano last erupted about 640,000 years ago, accordingto US Geological Survey records. Last December, geologists reported that the magma reservoir under the supervolcano is two-and-a-half times larger

than previous estimates. “That’s not to say it’s getting any bigger,” said analysis team scientist James Farrell of the University of Utah. “It’s just that our ability to see it is getting better.” The supervolcano has the potential to spew more than 240 cubic miles (1,000 cubic kilometers) of magma across Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. “We believe it will erupt again someday, but we have no idea when,” Farrell toldNational Geographic. In March, a viral video of bison stampeding through the park gave rise to rumors of an imminent eruption. In early April, scientists and park officials debunked the fears, saying the bison run was a natural migratory occurrence, not a sign of impending volcanic activity. That very same week, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook the northwest section of the park, marking the largest seismic activity at Yellowstone since 1980. The earthquake occurred near “an area or ground uplift tied to the upward movement of molten rock in the super-volcano, whose mouth, or caldera, is 50 miles long and 30 miles wide,” Reuters reported at the time. The uplift does not make volcanic activity more likely, though, according to Peter Cervelli, associate director for science and technology at the US Geological Survey’s Volcano Science Center in California. “The chance of that happening in our lifetimes is exceedingly insignificant,” he said.
