Cooper & Gatlin Release “On Your Mind”

By Desert Star Staff Powerhouse brother-sister pop duo Cooper & Gatlin have released their catchy and relatable summer anthem “On Your Mind” out everywhere today. The pair was inspired to pen this tune after Gatlin’s self-described fantasy turned

flatline dating experience. As frustrating as the situation was, it served as the perfect lyrical inspiration. Hurt by this guy’s lack of devotion, she knew she was worth more than being put on anyone’s back burner. “On Your Mind became our ‘buck up, or butt

By Pamela J. Price The lavish annual Pageant of the Masters, “where art comes to life” opened on July 7th at the Irvine Bowl, under the stars, in the heart of Laguna Beach, CA. Closing on August 31st, you should take the opportunity of experiencing “art in living pictures,” a mélange of stage magic, music, and storytelling under the starlit sky in Laguna Beach. This year nearly 500 volunteers giving their time behind the scenes and int cast made the Pageant possible according to David Perry, Board President of the Festival of Arts. Curating art and music honoring Leonardo Da Vinci’s 500 years struck a chord with the audience who may or may not have been aware of celebrations throughout the world honoring this “Italian Renaissance master” and his dramatic influence spanning generations. A smart reminder was the hyper-real environment “special effects” this year such as a spectacular UFO hovering to our left poised in the sky to either planning to land or take off!

This season’s theme, “The Time Machine” was inspired by English science fiction writer, H.G. Wells first novel published in 1895, The Time Machine and Leonardo Da Vinci’s legacy, celebrating his life and work which has made its way to museums worldwide including the installation of his masterpiece, The Last Supper at the Vatican in Italy. During the Pageants 90-minute performance the audience was quietly mesmerized by stunning “living pictures” capturing the drama and spirit of historical benchmarks, from a monument of Nicola Tesla to a poster of the science fiction movies, The Time Machine produced by MGM in 1960. The mural of Leonardo’s The Last Summer, the traditional finale since 1936 brought the audience to a silent farewell as The Time Machine came to an inspirational close, almost. “Fragile,” a raw, beautiful track about vulnerability and daring to be authentic, was released to warm praise from fans and the media alike. The track’s success includes over 2 million streams and an incredible video featuring NBC’s World of Dance stars Sean Lew and Kaycee Rice. It came hot on the heels of their debut single “Break,” another rhythmic track about the stoic face you put on in front of ex-lovers. Upon its release, the track was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday U.S. playlist, and the video has now amassed over 628K views. Ultra Records artist Tep No also produced a remix of the track that he even called “one of the best remixes I’ve made.” The two have the brilliant ability to blend elements of both acoustic and electronic components seamlessly into their music. They draw you in with their lush harmonies, tight melodies, and playful brother-sister dynamic. They indeed found their sound when

the pair’s family relocated to Los Angeles in 2014 from their hometown of Franklin, Tennessee. They’ve spent the past several years honing their craft as songwriters and musicians by forging their vast array of influences together to create a sound uniquely their own. They recently wrote a batch of new left-of-center pop songs that are universal and uplifting in delivery, but also deeply personal. “There is an element of Cooper & Gatlin’s dynamic as a duo that instantly resonates with listeners – making you feel as if you’ve known them forever when, in fact, they’ve only just released their third single. The Tennessee born, LA-based, brother-sister alternative-pop team captivate their audience with their fresh and spirited ability to connect through storytelling in their music that stems from a powerful mutual understanding.” -Heirwaves

Alternative Long-Term Care Solutions

By Janice Gough The cost of standalone long-term care insurance has been increasing for years; some states have recently permitted premium increases of between 200% and 300%, making it difficult for those who purchased these plans years ago to continue. The cost of long-term care itself continues to increase along with premiums on LTC policies, making it more critical than ever for clients to plan now for future care. The decline of traditional long-term care insurance does not mean that you should not consider this

protection, however, when you receive rate increases which do not fit your budget, you should discuss what changes you can make in the current plan with your agent, to cut costs and keep coverage. With the decline of traditional policies, long-term care insurance coverage now often comes packaged with a life insurance or annuity product. The primary appeal of combining life insurance (or an annuity) with long-term care coverage is that these hybrid policies can offer more affordable protection and less strict underwriting. The life insurance policy or annuity will provide a standard death benefit—either in the form of death proceeds or annuity payouts—to the contract beneficiaries even if the long-term care feature is never accessed. Under an annuity with a long-term care rider, coverage is based on a percentage of his or her initial premium investment (usually 200% or 300% of the client’s investment). You may also choose to purchase inflation protection, which ensures that the contract value grows at a rate that is designed to keep pace with the rising costs of long-term care. The price of the product will also be impacted by how long the client wants long-term care coverage to last. A hybrid life insurance policy is a policy that provides

a traditional death benefit to the client’s beneficiaries, but also allows some or all of this death benefit to be withdrawn to pay for longterm care expenses after a certain period has passed. A penalty may be imposed if care is needed too early. You may also purchase a rider that requires the carrier to continue to pay for care even after the death benefit and cash value of the policy are exhausted. With these endorsements, if the long-term care is not needed, tax-free life insurance proceeds do not change. Many modern-day hybrid products have even evolved so that they contain a return of premium option, which allows you to access the investment

during life if it is decided to use the funds for other purposes. Typically, hybrid policies must be funded with a single premium payment, which can make them prohibitively expensive for some. However, because many individuals may have trouble allocating a large sum of money toward the purchase all at once, some carriers have developed products that can be paid for in installments over time. Exchanging a current annuity or life-insurance contract in a tax-free exchange can also allow a client to purchase a hybrid policy without significantly depleting otherwise available retirement funds. In cases where you own life insurance which is not needed,

You may consider Viatical Settlements, in which you sell your permanent life insurance policy and use the proceeds to pay for long-term care expenses. The profits may be taxed, and your survivors will no longer get a death benefit from the policy. (Upon your the death, benefits will go to the new owner of your system.) Fifty-Two percent of the population will require LTC after age 65. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor in Palm Springs. Senators Back Protections for Undocumented Military Family Members

A letter signed by 22 U.S. senators to the Department of Homeland Security asks the agency to preserve the Parole in Place program for family members of servicemen and women. (MichaelJung/Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Immigrants’ rights groups say fear is spreading among people in the U.S. military

who have undocumented family members, after word that a program that protects their families from deportation may be terminated.

The U.S. Customs and Immigration Service confirms that the “Parole in Place” program is under review, but says no

decisions have been made. Carlos Luna, a chapter president of Green Card Veterans, part of LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens Council 5310, says the ICE raids slated to start this weekend have many service members terrified. “People will be more afraid to open their doors,” Luna warns. “The ones who are active-duty service, they fear going on base with their spouse to do shopping. If they have childcare on base, they can’t even do that. Our military bases are federal, so they will gladly hand over to ICE any military spouses that may come up on a background check as undocumented.” Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., along with 22 of her colleagues sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security urging the agency

to keep the program intact, saying that ending it would tear families apart and be grossly unfair to those serving in the military. A few weeks ago, President Donald Trump tweeted that ICE intends to deport millions of undocumented people in the coming months. Luna warns that the deportations that would follow termination of the Parole in Place program would hurt military readiness. “Servicemembers cannot perform to the best of their ability if they’re worried about ICE coming to take away their family,” says Luna. “It not only affects that one individual, it affects their entire unit.” There is no official estimate of how many people have applied for Parole in Place status, as the Department of Defense does not make that data public.

New Mexico Celebrates Latino Conservation Week

By Desert Star Staff SANTA FE, N.M. — Latinos are the largest minority group in America, representing nearly 17% of the nation’s population. But when it comes to taking part in outdoor recreation activities, a 2018 report by the Outdoor Industry Association found only 10% of Latinos participated. This is the 6th annual Latino Conservation Week, with as many as 150 events in 25 states. Grecia Nuñez, public lands fellow with New Mexico Wild, said some Latinos have had a more passive relationship with wilderness than other groups, but she believes social media is creating momentum for them

to get involved in advocacy work for conservation. “We’ve been out here using these spaces to picnic, to fish, for hunting, for recreation for a long time,” Nuñez said. “So it’s something that’s been important in Latino communities for a very long time.” The Hispanic Access Foundation said the goal of the week is to “break down barriers for Latino communities to access public lands” and create a new generation of environmental stewards by having them participate in sunset walks, camping, hiking and canoeing. An interactive map showing events scheduled around the country

this week can be found at latinoconservationweek.com. Nuñez said calling attention to conservation efforts is especially important in New Mexico right now, where a fourth effort is under way to create a large diversion dam on the Gila River - first designated a wilderness area in 1924. Nuñez and other environmental activists

support legislation to better protect the Gila by designating it a Wild and Scenic River. “The Gila River is the last free-flowing river in New Mexico,” she said. “And in the desert that is something that is really important to not only people but also our ecosystems, our wildlife.” The Upper Gila watershed is home to seven threatened

or endangered species that could be harmed by a diversion project. The New Mexico governor and the state’s congressional delegation oppose the project. In 2019, the American Riversconservation group cited the proposed diversion project when naming the Gila River, the nation’s most endangered river.

2020 Democratic Presidential Hopefuls Share Views in 5 Iowa Cities

we have a unique position, and we understand we are making some decisions and choices for the rest of the country,” she states. Locations for the weekday forums include Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines and Sioux City. AARP Iowa and the Des Moines Register newspaper are sponsoring the debates, which begin at 2 p.m. Central Time. Some of the forums are sold out, but to find out which candidates will be in each city and locations, or to watch the live stream, go to aarp.org/election2020. She adds that the

political season is an exciting time in Iowa. “AARP Iowa is excited to bring our members that energy, and also doing it in a way that no one else is doing it right now, right?” she states. “We are just pounding this down, all in a week, all across the state with all the candidates that we could get – that we could squeeze in.” Voter turnout is consistently higher among older voters than younger ones. In the 2016 general election, 69% of baby boomers, and 70% of the older, so-called silent generation, say they voted compared with just 51% of millennials. By Desert Star Staff COLUMBUS, Ohio — The latest Census of Agriculture confirms the continuing trend of an aging farming population. However, nextgeneration farmers are stepping up to fill their shoes. The Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association analyzed data from the five-year USDA survey and found the state ranks sixth nationally for the number of new and beginning farmers. Policy Director with OEFFA Amalie Lipstreu said that’s roughly 33,000 people answering the call to a challenging occupation. “Certainly this year, farmers are facing multiple challenges with the weather and with trade tensions,” Lipstreu said. “So we need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to ensure that farmers can make a living so that we have and can keep these young people that are interested in farming.”

Ohio also ranked sixth for the number of certified organic farms and second for the number of acres being transitioned to organic production systems. The state also increased its farmland by nearly 4,700 acres and is now home to 77,000 farms - the highest number since 1997. Another bright spot is the value of food sold directly to Ohio consumers, which nearly doubled between 2012 and 2017 to $80 million, despite what Lipstreu said are serious shortcomings in the foodprocessing infrastructure. For example, she explained, the state only has one certified organic meat processing facility. “Now is the time for investment in local and regional food systems to further increase the value of these direct marketed foods, create food and agriculture jobs and increase farm viability at a time when farmers

would greatly benefit from that support,” she said. As the nation faces a growing climate crisis and Ohio works to solve waterquality problems, Lipstreu said organic production can help food and agricultural systems become resilient and regenerative. She contended investments are needed that

incentivize the transition to organic, and provide organic farmers with research data and technical assistance. “We should be looking for ways to increase support for certified organic production systems that provide ecosystem benefits like clean water, wildlife habitat and increased wealth to local communities,” she said.

According to the analysis, research links economic health at the county level to organic agriculture. Disclosure: Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association contributes to our fund for reporting on Consumer Issues, Hunger/ Food/Nutrition, Rural/Farming, Sustainable Agriculture.

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, DC – On Friday, the United States House of Representative passed the $733 billion National Defense Authorization Act. Included in the defense spending bill is a hearing protection measure that directs the Department of Defense to submit a report to the House Committee on Armed Services on current hearing protection measures in use during combat training and the effectiveness of these devices. “The United States has the greatest military in the world, both in terms of our national

arsenal and manpower,” said Congressman Tony Cárdenas. “We spend more on our national defense than any other developed country, yet our service members do not have adequate protective hearing equipment when they are serving abroad or adequate medical devices when they return home. I am proud that my hearing protection measure for our troops was included in the final passage of the FY20 NDAA. We need to ensure that our men and women of the Armed Forces have all the tools and resources at their disposal to help ensure that

their missions are carried out successfully, minimize mission risk, and transition back to civilian life when they return home. I am proud to have supported the passage of this year’s defense authorization and I urge the Senate to do their job and pass this bill.” “In this era, where partisanship is the norm, the Democratic members of the Armed Services Committee have worked diligently to preserve our Committee’s long-standing tradition of bipartisanship, and the FY20 NDAA is a reflection of that tradition,” said House Armed

Services Chairman Adam Smith. “While this year’s NDAA contains bipartisan provisions, our new Democratic majority has had an undeniable impact on the contents of this bill. Thanks to the leadership of Congressman Cárdenas and other members of our excellent caucus, the bill passed today reflects our Democratic values, supports our troops, and provides for a strong national defense enterprise.” The House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness notes that despite the widespread availability of ear protection equipment

across the Department of Defense, service members continue to experience hearing loss attributed to their military service. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, hearing loss and tinnitus are the top two service-connected disabilities among veterans. Nearly 75% of veterans suffering from tinnitus had anxiety disorder, while 60% had depression, and almost 60% had both conditions present. The VA is responsible for purchasing 20% of all hearing aids sold in the United States annually.

Jeffrey Epstein had Cash, Diamonds and a Foreign Passport

NBC-PS News Staff Agents unearthed a “pile of cash, diamonds” and “a passport from a foreign country” in a safe belonging to Jeffrey Epstein, prosecutors told a judge Monday during a bail hearing for the wealthy financier and accused sex trafficker. Federal authorities are arguing for Epstein to be denied bail and to remain behind bars until he’s tried for sex-crime charges in acts allegedly involving underage girls. “Just this morning, the government became aware of a safe that contained a pile of cash, diamonds, a passport from a foreign country with a picture of the defendant under another name,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex Rossmiller told U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman. “The passport was issued in the name of a foreign country, it was issued in the 1980s, it is expired, it shows a picture of Jeffrey Epstein, and another name,” Rossmiller said, adding the passport showed Epstein’s residence as Saudi Arabia. Earlier in the hearing, Berman said he would not rule on Epstein’s bail request until Thursday. Epstein, 66, was arrested

July 6 at a New Jersey airport after arriving from Paris and accused of sex trafficking and conspiracy. He faces up to 45 years in prison on allegations that he sexually abused dozens of underage girls at his homes in New York and Florida between 2002 and 2005. Epstein is also accused of paying his victims to recruit others, allowing him to build a vast network of girls to exploit. He has pleaded not guilty. His arrest camemore than a decade after he signed a controversial non-prosecution deal in 2008 that allowed him to dodge a federal indictment alleging he abused several underage girls. Epstein ultimately pleaded guilty to state charges of soliciting minors for prostitution and served a 13-month sentence in a Florida county jail. He was forced to register as a sex offender under that deal. Since the wealthy financier was nabbed off his private plane at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, he’s been locked up at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City. He’s pleaded not guilty to the two-count indictment. Federal agents searching for his lavish Upper East

Side townhouse found “an extraordinary volume of photographs of nude and partially-nude young women or girls,” prosecutors say in court papers. Federal prosecutors have said Epstein poses an “extraordinary risk of flight” given his exorbitant wealth, private planes and international ties. On Friday, they said Epstein needs to be kept locked up because he has a history of seeking to “influence” possible co-conspirators. He wired $350,000 to a pair of possible coconspirators just days after the publication of a newspaper story alleging he sexually abused dozens of underage girls, according to prosecutors. They said the payments were made last November after the bombshell Miami Herald story came out about his crimes and favorable plea bargain, demonstrating his alleged willingness to tamper with witnesses. “This course of action, and in particular it’s timing, suggests the defendant was attempting to further influence co-conspirators who might provide information against him in light of the recently re-emerging allegations,”

the prosecutors wrote in court papers arguing against Epstein’s bail. In their court papers, Epstein’s lawyers proposed that his bond be secured by a mortgage on his Manhattan mansion, valued at $77 million. They say his private jet can be pledged as collateral. Epstein’s arrest shed renewed light on the deal he struck in 2008 with local and federal prosecutors in South Florida. The U.S. attorney in Miami at the time was Alex

Acosta, who went on to become labor secretary for President Donald Trump. During a lengthy press conference last Tuesday, Acosta defended the deal, saying it was the best prosecutors could do at the time. Acosta resigned Friday. Prosecutors have said Epstein has long made a habit of bringing in teenage girls he paid for “massages” at his West Palm Beach, Florida, estate in the early 2000s. Source: NBC Palm Springs

with their own party’s leader, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. After voting against a House border security bill last month, the squad trashed moderate Democrats who helped pass the legislation, accusing them of caving to the White House and perpetuating the separation of immigrant families they railed against. The millennial lawmakers have also clashed with Pelosi over their support for the Green New Deal and Medicare for All – expensive liberal policies that have become lightning rods for Republican ridicule. Pelosi snapped back. “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” the 79-yearold Democrat told the New York Times, “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people, and that’s how many votes they got, “referring to their inability to block the border bill. Ocasio-Cortez played the intersectional card and insisted

Pelosi was unfairly targeting “newly elected women of color,” while her spokesman and progressive activist, Corbin Trent, told the Washington Post that the Democratic Party is gripped by “cowardice” and led by an older generation “driven by fear.” With a gulf widening in the party, Trump threw in one of his trademark digs. “I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements,” he said, taunting the progressives. Pelosi later called Trump’s Sunday tweetstorm “xenophobic,” and said that the president plans on “making America white again,” a phrase the speaker has used before to criticize his agenda. Though Trump’s insults and jibes often elicit a negative response, commentators took particular issue with his latest outburst, pointing out that America has been a home to immigrants since the country’s founding.

Go back to your crime infested countries and Pelosi will pay for it - Trump

By Desert Star Staff In a three-tweet tirade, President Donald Trump told progressive congresswomen to go back to their “totally broken, and crime-infested” countries of origin and sneered at the infighting rocking the Democratic Party. “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people

of the United States, the greatest and most powerful nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” the president tweeted on Sunday. “Why don’t they go back and help fix the broken and crime-infested places from which they came,” he continued. Trump’s tweet targeted a handful of hotshot progressive congresswoman informally known by the millennial moniker ‘The Squad’: New York’s Alexandria OcasioCortez, Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib, Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar, and Massachusetts’ Ayanna Pressley.

Despite Trump’s line of attack, only one of the squad hails from outside the United States. Ilhan Omar was born in Somalia and arrived in the US at the age of 12 after fleeing her country’s civil war. Her persistent criticism of Trump and American foreign policy has led right-wing pundits to blast her as un-American, with Fox News host Tucker Carlson accusing her of harboring “undisguised contempt for the United States and its people” in a segment aired on Tuesday. All of the squad have emerged not only as fierce critics of Trump’s immigration policies but also at loggerheads July 17, 2019

California’s New Roadmap to Tackle Uptick in Disaster

By Desert Star Staff Sacramento – Six strategies stand to amplify whole community emergency preparedness and improve coordination of community assets for disaster response and recovery, describes a report released today by California Volunteers, Office of the Governor. In response to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s call to build community resiliency and ready the state for earthquake, wildfire, drought, and flood, the report developed in collaboration with Monitor Institute by Deloitte presents solutions to leverage nonprofit, community-based, faithbased, and private-sector resources while working with the public sector. A roadmap offers investment strategies to effectively channel private-sector resources, spur cross-sector coordination, and bolster the capacity of local communities to strengthen resilience. “Gone are the days when we let a single “blue sky day slip away because the next earthquake, wildfire, and other natural disaster is right around the corner, said Gov. Newsom.

“An effective emergency response and preparedness system must integrate all parts of the community. Adopting smart approaches now will boost resiliency and ready communities, especially our vulnerable populations. Building upon publicsector investments like the $50 million California For All Emergency Preparedness Campaign that advances a people-centered approach to promote readiness among diverse and socially vulnerable populations, the report identifies gaps before, during and after disaster and shows that with a rise in number and scale of disaster there is an increasing need for cross-sector response and recovery solutions. The research found that most communities don’t fully understand local resources or effectively involve nonprofits, faith and community-based organizations and the private sector. Specifically, individuals and organizations are frequently unprepared for the disaster; insufficient local-level coordination leads to wasted resources, unplanned donations and volunteer actions get in the

way of emergency response and critical community needs aren’t always addressed. “When a disaster happens, all Californians want to respond. It’s our nature of giving, but it also presents challenges, said California Chief Service Officer Karen Baker. “With so many different sectors and organizations that have their own interests, priorities, and circumstances, our report offers opportunities to address major gaps and align, connect and maximize the many sectors and entities that stand ready to act before, during and after a disaster. “Natural disasters increasingly threaten California’s safety and prosperity, most painfully affecting those who are already struggling economically, said Don Howard, President and CEO of The James Irvine Foundation, which supported the creation of the roadmap report based on two cross-sector workshops and a review of over 70 FEMA and state planning documents and reports. “Philanthropy is a partner in building resilient communities, including by investing in

research, data, and creative solutions for responding to and preventing future disasters. Stepping up to lead one of the six strategies is Philanthropy California – an alliance of Northern California, Southern California, and San Diego Grantmakers – which will join together other funders for a gathering on disaster preparedness and response planning and investing later this year. The summit aims to bring together statewide funders to clarify the variety of roles funders could play, develop equitable disaster response and recovery grantmaking

strategies, and discuss how to integrate disaster preparedness requirements into all communitybased grants and provide adequate funding to enact these approaches with local partners. Many report insights were based on the expertise and experience of the California Volunteers team (https:// californiavolunteers.ca.gov). The office is charged with promoting volunteering and administering AmeriCorps funds, as well as, coordinating volunteer needs and monetary donations in times of disaster with the most recent being the response to both Ridgecrest Earthquakes earlier this month.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

What is your lineage, what are your cultural roots, your heritage? How are interactions and relations with family and relatives, and how are you feeling about yourself these days? Your energy may be low. You must rest, be in the sun and sleep a bit more, tend more to family and the home, and bring into your environments that which sustains, comforts, and supports you. No moods will be allowed.

TAURUS You may be in touch with past relationships and friends. This will allow you to review not only your self-worth but also what you value about yourself. You will find that you must begin or assume again plans for community development; new neighborhoods based on community cooperative ideals. Communication between two factions may be needed. Notice any values conflicts. What is right beside you is most important.

GEMINI Values. A new beginning, a reorientation or a re-evaluation of your values have been called forth. Changes have occurred, opportunities are appearing. You must keep up with these for you can be a spokesperson for many. A smaller reality must fall away in order that you embrace a larger one. Usually you’re silent about such things. Who can

you talk to now? The Soul brightens up each day, calling your personality to choose.

CANCER A new beginning is occurring for you. A new seed thought has been planted in your heart and mind. I know you sense and feel it. Forces and energies not yet fully know, call you to a greater self-discovery. Perhaps it concerns where you live and your present world work. You have/will become more adaptable which increases your self-acceptance and selfworth. Something ends quietly and something greater begins.

LEO Review your career path, your finances and your spiritual knowledge and beliefs. This will shift into focus what is most important for you. You will re-commit to something, someplace or someone from long ago. This surprises you. You’re finally learning from (and listening to) others. Many have loved you over lifetimes. What does your heart tell you about these things?

VIRGO You will enter into regions of the mind not often explored and will find over time what ideas and beliefs from long ago need elimination so that new regions of mind can develop. Hidden aspects of self will be encountered. Observe everything. The eclipses have brought endings with new beginnings. Along with your

retrograde journal, are you writing in your eclipse journal?

LIBRA Is there a conflict between previous choices and present ways of being? Holding onto the past is a comfort. However, you also want to move forward. You cannot do both. Review what the past means to you and why you made certain decisions that keep you from certain situations and people. The eclipses this month bring forth startling and surprising thoughts, ideas, events and life changes. The idea of forgiveness and inclusion follow.

SCORPIO Bold steps may be taken in areas of goals, culture, study, education and career. You may even travel a bit, leading to a new direction in life. Careful in the retrograde. Something dramatic and different may occur at work. Or has it already? As time passes you’ll understand the opportunities being offered you. If you could do anything in the future, what would that be?

SAGITTARIUS Unexpected events will affect your dream world, your intuition, and the place where inspiration comes from. You are to tend to finances once again. It’s important to know what your relationship is with money and sharing with others. This will expand and change. Also, someone

may come along in the next three months and then new ideas and revelations occur. Be charming and kind.

CAPRICORN Allow yourself to rest more. Don’t be guarded, don’t overwork or stress yourself. If you do someone or something may catch you off guard. Too many details these days are exhausting and distracting from what’s important. Tell everyone in your environment you need extra help. Create an agenda of tasks for others to do. Allow them to perform those tasks. Then give them stars. In the meantime, lay about and languish a bit.

Some students recovered with chocolate milk and others recovered with a sports drink with the same amount of carbohydrates but no protein. Researchers found that students who recovered with chocolate milk had greater strength gains compared to those who recovered with sports drinks. In fact, the chocolate milk group bench-pressed an average of 3.5% more at the end of the program than at the beginning, whereas teens who recovered with sports drinks actually decreased their bench-press weight by close to the same amount, around 3.2%. Additionally, those who recovered with chocolate milk improved in squat strength

On top of high-quality protein to help build muscle, each 8-ounce glass of chocolate milk has carbohydrates to help bodies refuel; fluids and electrolytes to help rehydrate; calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus to build and maintain strong bones; vitamin A to support a healthy immune system and B vitamins to help bodies convert food into energy. Creep Yourself Out with Horror Tale “Us” Before he became a screenwriter/director, Jordan Peele did comedy with Keegan Michael Key. In fact, they recently worked together voicing two plush toys, Ducky and Bunny, in Disney Pixar’s “Toy Story 4.” Now Peele’s career path has veered from comedy to writing and directing. In 2017 his first movie “Get Out” was well-received by critics. Now he has created his second film “Us,” a modern horror story starring Lupita Nyong’o in a dual role. “Us” was popular with critics, receiving a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, “Us” only scored 62 percent with general audiences in the survey. It certainly won’t be your cup of tea if you can’t handle seeing a family terrorized by creepy characters that look just like them. So be forewarned. Before the story starts, we are informed that there are thousands of miles of empty tunnels, mine shafts and abandoned train routes lying unseen beneath the

United States. As we watch the film, that statement could serve as a metaphor for what lies hidden inside each of us, just below the surface. After that onscreen statement, the film begins in 1986 as a little girl wanders past a carnival boardwalk and into a dark, sinister-looking hall of mirrors. What happens next truly frightens her. Then the narrative cuts to the present. That little girl is now married, with two children of her own. Her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) is all excited about a vacation he has planned for the family which will take them back to the same beach area in Santa Cruz where she had that uncomfortable experience as a child. She is reluctant, but eventually, she agrees to go. On the beach, they relax with friends who have a summer cottage adjacent to theirs. So far so good, but things change at night when Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) notices a group of four shadowy individuals lurking just outside their cottage entrance.

A DECADENT DESSERT PIZZA

When her husband confronts them, they start slowly walking toward him. At this point, he quickly goes back inside and locks the doors against them. But can he keep the intruders out and away from his family? When the sinister group finally breaks into their beach cottage, they look exactly like them--only creepy. They are dressed all in red and have long scissors that they use as weapons. Who are

these terrible duplicates? And what do they want? Screenwriter Peele was inspired by many segments from other horror films like “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and TV’s “The Twilight Zone.” He then meshed these ideas into a concoction all his own, designed to freak you out. “Us,” rated R for violence/terror and language, has a running time of 1

hour, 56 minutes. Do not bring your young children to see this movie! The newly released DVD of “Us” is filled with featurettes where writer/director Jordan Peele, cast and crew discuss the film, giving us their insights on the story and its underlying meanings. They also explain how the four main characters were able to appear on screen simultaneously with their creepy doppelgangers.

Leroy From The North at Pappy and Harriet’s August 15th

Ragged, Raw and Soul Deep, Leroy From the North Aims For The Rhythmic Heart Of American Roots.

By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles, CA— Leroy From The North is the brainchild of guitarist and singer-songwriter, Eli Wulfmeier. You may recognize Wulfmeier’s name from playing and touring with music notables such as Katy Rose, Brian Wright, Shelby Lynne, Joe Purdy, and Jonny Fritz. He also played guitar with Interscope Records band, The Wild Feathers for close to 3 years and is a member of the band, Dorothy. “I think that playing with others, has had a positive impact on my writing,” claims Wulfmeier. “This last year has been spent writing a lot while I was non-stop touring with Dorothy. All that time away allowed me to work on lyrics and absorb different cultures and scenery. I’m grateful for the experience.” Originally from Michigan and now based in Los Angeles, his music is influenced by the sound of the 70’s country gold, mixed with a little Detroit steel. Wulfmeier defines it as “Straight forward, guitar-driven rock with a slight drawl.” Joe Armstrong of Independent’s Day Radio wrote that “He sounds like an apple that fell directly off The Allman Brothers Tree. On guitar, his trick bag is full of tried and true rock and roll licks, and he executes them with smooth flair and tasteful approach that can at times lean toward the incendiary.” Health and Fitness is the first official release of Leroy From The North, but there will be an L.P. of all-new material following on its heels that is set to release this fall, 2019. The 5-song E.P. was produced and engineered by Geoff Neal (Chris Robinson, Black Keys, Dwight Yoakam) and was recorded at the legendary Hollywood studio, Sunset Sound. “For this EP I wanted to bring in some songs that I

10

DesertSTAR

had finished and just see how they developed with a band,” Wulfmeier explains. “We started playing ‘Here in my Home,’ ‘Hey Man,’ and ‘Into the Sunset’ live to see how they felt in the set, so those moved along fairly quickly in the studio. ‘Locked Out’ and ‘Fast Friends’ I had recorded earlier with Daxx Nielsen on drums, Johnny Flaugher on bass, and Rai Thistlewait on keys. Those songs just seemed to round out the E.P., so it made sense to add them. I think the overall vision was to create an E.P. that had some teeth but was still fun.” Health and Fitness kick off with “Here in my Home,” a song about isolation and trying to keep up with an ever-evolving society. “I wanted the song to sound heavy with guitars and be a bit more delicate in the verses to accentuate the conflict,” he explains. The

classic Southern rock feel of “Into the Sunset” is a more light-hearted tune about overcoming adversity and feeling that things will turn out okay in the long run. “Locked Out” has the overtones of 70’s era Gordon Lightfoot. “To me, it feels like a hangover,” Wulfmeier noted. “The lyrics are about

someone who is trying to hold on to a relationship, but he just can’t help himself. He makes the wrong move at every turn and just can’t win.” “Fast Friends” is a rhythmic rocker that is simply about becoming better friends after a fight. “Hey Man” touches again on the theme of isolation and confusion and voices a bit of outrage fatigue. “This song was a way to express my concern with the way our privacy is quickly going away, and how we willingly allow it to happen,” he explained. “Social media has us rating each other constantly, and I find that a bit off-putting. It’s tough because it feels like we have to participate in all of it or there’s a possibility of being left behind professionally and socially. I wanted this song to have a sort of tension and release at the end. Sort of a ‘fuck it, let’s have fun’”. In high-school Wulfmeier played in clubs around Detroit. From there he moved out to California and went back and forth between San Francisco and Los Angeles picking up gigs. Eventually, he got an audition as a guitar player with Katy Rose and toured

for a year with her. Following that he started a band called, Lexington Queen that played around L.A. for a few years. After the band ended, he took an internship at Interscope Records, where he landed in a band the label put together called, The Wild Feathers. “They were a band the label wanted to model after The Eagles, so it forced me to become more of a singer and lyricist,“ he pointed out. It was that experience that pushed me to start Leroy From The North.” “Making Health and Fitness was meaningful,” Wulfmeier expressed. “I got to record with all of my friends. I’ve played with many of them in different bands, so it was nice to have the familiarity and professional respect. We had a blast recording, and I’m excited to do it again soon. I’m looking forward to releasing more music and videos soon, as it’s been pretty fulfilling so far.” Leroy From the North at Pappy and Harriet’s August 15th All Ages/FREE/8pm

Bye-bye Bond: The new 007 is a black woman?

By Desert Star Staff The James Bond franchise will shake things up entirely for its 25th installment, casting a black actress to take over from Daniel Craig as the new 007 – since redoing old stories with a PC angle is more comfortable than writing new ones. The UK’s Daily Mail reports that British actress Lashana Lynch will take over from Craig as codename 007 in the as-yet-untitled film. The movie will reportedly see Craig retain the title role, however, being called out of retirement in Jamaica for one last mission. If previous trends are anything to go by – and if the move pays off – Lynch may then take over fully for the 26th movie. The revelation is not so surprising in an era when political correctness has become something of a new religion – and naturally, the casting has somewhat ironically prompted much divisiveness on social media, where there have been both celebrations of the daring move and anger that the long-established brand of the male, martini-sipping Bond would be fundamentally changed forever. To avoid confusion, it should be pointed out that Lynch won’t be playing ‘James Bond’ per se, but

will be taking over the 007 codename, which, technically speaking, can be done by anyone. The question is whether or not it should be. The Bond news comes shortly after it was announced that the Little Mermaid character would also be played by a black actress in an upcoming live-action remake of the 1989 classic, causing similarly divided social media reaction. Before that, there was the controversy over the casting of a black actress in the role of the white, red-haired Annie in 2014 – and the way things are going, a black female Bond won’t be the end of it, either. Amid all of the outrage and celebrations, only a few are pointing out the laziness of rehashing the same old stories with ‘diversified’ cast in blatant attempts to make bagloads of money pandering to more varied demographics – all without having to get the creative juices flowing to come up with entirely new characters and storylines. Perhaps afraid to pour money into untested ideas, Hollywood studios are churning out remakes a dime a dozen – but the creative inertia could backfire if enough people decide that Bond (and the rest of the modernized remakes) are no longer worth

the price of a movie ticket. If the opposite happens and people eat up the recycled offerings, then we can look forward to an endless stream of tedious remakes of everything from The Sound of Music to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The trend also points to an arguably insulting assumption that women – of any race – would be so overwhelmed with gratitude to be ‘given’ a traditionally male role. In an era when Hollywood actresses talk so much about a lack of strong female leads, one might assume they’d be happier to see each other

take on new, challenging roles in female-driven stories – instead of being placated by the offer of recycled male characters that have been around for decades. Does everything old need to be fixed? If a movie franchise is outdated, surely the better option is to simply move on and make something new? Bond critics have long said the character is a womanizing player unfit for the #MeToo era – or, a “sleazy, sexist pig” as one tweeter put it. Why is the solution to that to simply turn the 007 characters into a woman? Even if that description of

Bond is apt, “sleazy sexist pigs” do exist in the world and erasing them from the plots of all movies to sanitize stories for the sake of political correctness is quite unrealistic. If the latest obsession with rewriting movie history to be less ‘sexist’ and ‘racist’ continues in the current vein, audiences may soon start to catch on to the fact that this lazy pandering is more about Hollywood studios making a quick buck than a genuine interest in diversity and inclusivity. Then they’ll realize they’ve been duped all over again.

The New York Latino Film Festival, Presented By HBO Kicks Off Opening Night With Award-winning Film ‘Princess of the Row’

By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK, The New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF) kicks off on Monday, August 12th with more than 83 films representing 10 countries. The Festival will open with the New Yorkpremiere of the film Princess of the Row from director Van Maximilian Carlson and starring Martin Sheen, Edi Gathegi, Ana Ortiz, Tayler Buck, Jacob Vargas, among others. Unflinching and emotional, Princess of the Row is the inspiring tale of a runaway foster child who will stop at nothing to live with the only family she knows: her father… a homeless, mentally ill-veteran fighting to survive on the streets of LA’s skid row. The Festival returns with a star-studded line-up of screenings, including a special showcase of the beloved Bronx-set classic I Like It Like That. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the screening will be joined by the film’s cast — fully reunited for the first time since its premiere in 1994. In honor of the late Oscar-nominated www.desertstarweekly.com

filmmaker John Singleton, NYLFF is honored to present an outdoor screening of Poetic Justice, with a special appearance by his daughter Justice Singleton. Returning to the Festival is FUTURO, a one-day digital conference featuring conversations with top thought-leaders, executives, and influencers in the Latino digital space. This year, in partnership with HBO Latino, NYLFF presents Latinos StandUp competition, in search of the best Latino standup comedians around the country. Aspiring comedians are asked to submit their entries no later than Friday, July 19th for a chance to win a paid opportunity to appear in an upcoming HBO Latino Entre Nos comedy special. Closing the Festival, NYLFF presents El Proyeccionista (The Projectionist), the first Dominican film to screen at Sundance presenting a genre-bending homage to the power of pre-digital cinema.

Wildlife Bill Gets Bipartisan Support

By Desert Star Staff HARTFORD, Ct. — A new bill in Congress would bring millions of dollars to help atrisk wildlife in Connecticut. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, introduced with bipartisan support in the House last Friday, would send $1.3 billion of general revenue each year to states for implementation of Wildlife Action Plans. For Connecticut, that would mean about $12.5 million per year to help at-risk bird species and other wildlife. Patrick Comins, executive director of the Connecticut Audubon Society, called it the most important legislative initiative he’s seen in his 30 years as a conservationist. “It would provide a steady and increased source of funding for wildlife conservation, wildlife research, wildlife habitat management, even education related to wildlife,” Comins said. Comins said populations of many bird species are declining and are now vulnerable, including federally threatened piping plovers, blue-winged warblers and Connecticut’s most endangered bird, the saltmarsh sparrow. “It’s a small bird that lives near the coastal marshes, and it actually nests right on the ground in the higher portions of the marshes,” he said. “And so, it’s actually been having some serious problems with even small levels of sea level rise.” Experts say rising sea levels have put saltmarsh sparrows on a

path to extinction within the next 50 years. A bill to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund now is pending in the Senate. Comins said passing that bill and the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act would be the biggest news for wildlife conservation in living memory. “With Land and Water Conservation Fund, we could protect critical habitat. And then with the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act we could appropriately manage them and also better understand what the areas that are most important to protect are,” he said. He added wildlife conservation benefits all Americans and is an issue that should transcend partisan divisions.

Rising sea levels could drive the saltmarsh sparrow to extinction within 50 years. (Anne/AdobeStock)

Originality Mined On New Releases

A highly-anticipated return by Two Door Cinema Club, as well as several stellar new independent albums and E.P.s, make for a strong field of new releases. Artist: Two Door Cinema Club Title: False Alarm (Glassnote Records) You might like if you enjoy: A R I Z O N A, Duran Duran, Neon Trees Tell me more: On their newly-issued fourth studio album “False Alarm,” Northern Irish trio Two Door Cinema Club has once again unleashed an irresistible batch of great originals blending pop, indie rock, electronica, and neo-disco dance music. A casual listener is likely lured in by the catchy beats and glorious choruses, but there is plenty of textured and luxurious creativity, enhancing the 10 tracks on the set. Singer-guitarist Alex Trimble, lead guitarist Sam Halliday, and bassist-synths player Kevin Baird have joined forces

with producer Jacknife Lee (U2, R.E.M., The Killers) to push the boundaries of Two Door Cinema Club’s sound to new frontiers. “Talk” is a dance floor-meets-electronica gem; “So Many People” offers up a nuanced R& B soundscape. The driving electronica cut “Dirty Air” is undeniable; the robotic “Satellite” harkens back to ‘80s New Wave but exudes a bright sheen that defies its retro roots. The disco-flavored “Nice To See You” is bolstered by hip hop artist Open Mike Eagle; the explosive “Already Gone” closes out the terrific L.P. Information: twodoorcinemaclub.com.

Farrington — the moniker for tunesmith/singer/multiinstrumentalist James Patrick — and a super-talented group of surrounding players (including guitarist-bassist Anthony King, vocalist Nikki Paige, drummer Marcos de la Cruz and backing vocalist Kai Danzberg) has crafted a memorable disc that is rooted in the past while also striking a claim in the here and now via inventive songcraft and bona fide power. Standouts abound on the 14-track masterwork; the shimmer of “Blue,” pulsating pianoanchored “Stupid Plastic War” and the Bowiesque “Maybe If You Leave Her” impress with a single listen. The glam punk-styled “Long Way to Nowhere,” tuneful “Long Way to Nowhere” and “When I Was You, and the tender ballad “The Love Show” showcase an artist able to create musical

The administration has been trying - so far unsuccessfully - to coax Mexico and Guatemala into signing agreements establishing them as “safe third countries,” that would process and hold migrants while they apply for asylum there, rather

than allowing them transit on their way to the U.S. border. The president contended in a tweet that the vast majority of asylum claims are fraudulent. Reichlin-Melnick said people still will be able to apply for a much narrower form of asylum called withholding of removal. “Withholding of removal is

significantly more difficult to win than asylum, which offers no permanent path to remaining in the United States, no option to bring your family members, and which can be taken away in the future if the government determines that conditions have changed in your home country,” Reichlin-Melnick said.

Immigrants’ Rights Groups Slam Asylum Rules Taking Effect Today By Desert Star Staff JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Immigration rights groups, including the ACLU, are vowing to sue to stop the administration’s new asylum rules, which take effect today. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that blocks non-Mexican migrants from applying for asylum if they arrive on the southern border without proof, they were refused asylum in the first country they entered. The order is aimed at slowing the flow of migrants from poverty and violencestricken countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Aaron ReichlinMelnick, policy analyst with the American Immigration Council, said the rules go against this country’s values. “Banning asylum for anyone who’s not from Canada or Mexico or who can afford a plane ticket to come to the United States abandons America’s principles of protecting the vulnerable and offering refuge for those who

Cleanup Continues on Large Oil Spill in Kern County By Desert Star Staff MCKITTRICK, Calif. – Conservation groups are calling for a ban on new drilling as crews assess the damage from a large oil spill in Kern County. Chevron reports that one of its wells near McKittrick has leaked more than 500,000 gallons of oil and wastewater into a dry creek bed. The leak started in May and continued intermittently until crews sealed it last week. Hollin Kretzmann, senior attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, says the spill is no small matter. “It’s massive,” he stresses. “This is bigger than the Plains All American Pipeline spill that California experienced a few years ago. This volume of oil and water could cover a football field about 2 1/2 feet deep.” Chevron, in a statement, said there has been no impact to waterways or wildlife.

But Kretzmann says the leak will contaminate the soil and could seep into groundwater – and that chemicals could evaporate and pollute the air. Mary Salas Fricke, public information officer for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention, says her agency has not witnessed any oiled birds so far, but it won’t make a full assessment until it gets the thumbs up from the Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR). “They’re using pumps to remotely remove product from the containment area,” she states. “And we’re waiting on DOGGR and Chevron to deem the impacted area safe for entry in order to oversee full onsite cleanup using heavy equipment.” Kretzmann wants the state to stop approving new drilling and wind down the

He maintains the agency has been “captured” by the industry it is supposed to regulate. “DOGGR has employees that have investments in oil

companies, who have worked for oil companies in the past,” he points out. “And this type of accident is the result of having an agency that has been asleep at the wheel. “ Late last week, Gov.

Gavin Newsom fired the head of DOGGR, saying the agency approved too many fracking permits and failed to police any conflicts of interest by employees who owned oil industry stocks.

people, for the most part, wouldn’t have had their brush with the law if they hadn’t been struggling with mental illness. “These are people who aren’t as culpable as other people who are involved in the criminal justice system,” Haywood said. “And it serves no point to insist on that personal accountability angle when really it’s, you know, a mental illness that is to blame for a lot of the conduct.” Haywood said the county’s Department of Human Services has been pushing for this kind of jail diversion program for the past five years. The meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Arlington County Courthouse. Some advocates of the program are concerned that holding the meeting during work hours will limit public input. The treatment program would be community-based and supervised by mental-

health professionals and court workers. Haywood said the ultimate goal is to stop criminalizing behavior that is the result of a mental illness, and to give people options other than going to jail. “A lot of the crimes that people, our future participants, are being arrested for are crimes that barely even have a victim,” he said. “So, things like trespassing, maybe even on public property. things like disorderly conduct. It’s things like interdiction, where somebody is being arrested simply because they’re in possession of alcohol.” A recent study showed one in 10 people in Virginia prisons has been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, and about one in five has some form of mental illness. Those interested in commenting on the proposal can contact the Arlington County Department of Human Services.

Arlington County Aims to Launch Mental Health Court

Many Virginia cities and counties began researching a decade ago to create programs to divert people with mental illnesses from incarceration. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff ARLINGTON, Va. — Arlington County will hold a meeting this week to get public input on a new program designed to offer those with mental illnesses treatment instead of jail time

when they’re arrested. The idea behind what’s known as “mental health court” is to waive incarceration if a person with a mental illness, convicted of a nonviolent misdemeanor, agrees to a treatment program

supervised by a judge. The draft proposal has been criticized because it requires a guilty plea before a person can enter the program. Arlington County’s Chief Public Defender Brad Haywood said that these

Judge Rules Death Penalty Protocol Unconstitutional By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. — A Franklin County judge has ruled the state’s protocol for carrying out the death penalty is unconstitutional. The ruling by Judge Phillip Shepherd came in response to a case filed by a group of death-row inmates, who argued corrections department regulations don’t protect people with intellectual disabilities. Nearly 20 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court banned the execution of people

14

with intellectual disabilities. Aaron Bentley, chair of the Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, said the judge’s decision highlights one of the many flaws in the state’s system. “What Kentucky is asking us is to trust that a person not only deserves - in their estimation - to be executed, but is fit to be executed,” Bentley said. “And what the decision from the Franklin circuit court shows is that we can’t trust that.”

Bentley pointed out the state once relied on IQ testing to determine whether or not a person could be considered intellectually disabled. In 2018, Kentucky’s Supreme Court ruled IQ alone is not sufficient to determine mental competency. Bentley said corrections departments should be performing comprehensive psychological testing to ensure defendants have the ability to understand why they are being sentenced to die. Litigation over Kentucky’s July 17, 2019

execution protocol has been ongoing for more than a decade. Republican State Rep. Chad McCoy of Bardstown said Kentuckians should be aware that legal fees and other costs involved in death-row cases are draining state funds. “Right now with the death penalty in Kentucky, since 1978, I think we’ve had 33 people sentenced to death, but we’ve only actually executed three. And of those three, one of them voluntarily said ‘I’m not going to do any appeals;

go ahead and do it.’ And the other two actually went through the system,” McCoy said. “We waste just a ton of money on the appeals, that last literally for years, and years and years, and years.” The state spends an estimated $10 million per year on death-penalty court proceedings, according to the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. Max Rodriguez The Palm Springs Police Department is warning residents of scam-callers who are trying to shake down locals for money through the phone. Sergeant Mike Casavan with the PSPD in a video uploaded to Facebook said residents received calls asking for payment to settle a legal matter posing as the department. Casavan said, “People have been receiving phone calls saying they are a representative of the Palm Springs Police Department and they are requiring a sum of money over the phone.” The phony-calls may seem legitimate as the caller I.D. may show the department’s office number

and the scammer uses the names of actual employees. However, Casavan makes it clear the police department will not make phone calls demanding any sort of payment and adds those calls should be reported to them. Other types of scam-calls may pretend to be employees of the I.R.S. or act as a federal student loan facilitator. These are agencies that will not make collect calls to people either. Thousands of Customers in High Desert without power

By Daytona Everett A heatwave is roasting the Coachella Valley. So hot, the National Weather Service has an excessive heat warning in effect through Monday. In the midst of the heatwave, the high desert experienced a significant power outage affecting 5,253 customers, according to Southern California Edison. Since the original outage, all customers have been restored. Yucca Valley resident Rebeka Steve said her home one of the thousands affected. “It was super-hot,” Steve said. “Definitely couldn’t sleep, our dogs couldn’t sleep, we actually have a family visiting right now.” SCE said the outage was the result of an equipment issue. “We were up in the middle of the night trying to stay cool,” she said. It wasn’t just households that were hit by the outage; businesses such as Morongo Fruit Market were also affected. The power was back up and running in time

for that day’s customers. “The trick is you go out early in the morning on your chores,” Dawn Andersen, a Joshua Tree resident, said about the heat. “Get back home and do work at home.” Some people like James Stanley, a UPS worker, does not get the luxury of working at home. “Making people happy, give them what they want, stay hydrated, drink plenty of water,” Stanley said about his demanding job. With Amazon Prime Day on Monday and Tuesday, Stanley said he expects to be busy. He added that making deliveries in the high desert is better. “Little bit more wind up here, little bit more breeze,” he said, “It’s a little bit nicer, but we just need to stay on our toes.” “Stay on their toes” as the heat advisory is expected to expire soon, but the summer heat will surely be sticking around. Vegas Mother of 3 Gets Last-Minute Reprieve from Deportation By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS — As the ICE raids continue around the country, immigrants’ rights groups are calling for mercy in the case of a Las Vegas mother of three who was set to be deported today, and just got a temporary reprieve. ICE arrested Adriana Arellano Cruz in Las Vegas on Thursday, even though her only crimes were some traffic violations and working on an expired visa. On Monday, a judge granted a temporary stay of the removal order, and her attorney is fighting for her release. Her 16-year-old daughter Kimberly said she’ll have nowhere to go if her mom is deported. “I say my mom should stay because she’s not a criminal and she has three kids here that have, like,

we have no parents,” the young woman said. “It’s just my mom with us. We have no family here. So my mom is all we got. “ Arellano’s three children, ages 21, 16 and 12, are American citizens. They pleaded her case alongside immigration advocates on Monday when news came of the temporary stay, and they are hoping ICE will release her and grant her case a new hearing. The president has vowed to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, and ICE raids are ongoing. Erika Castro with the Nevada Immigrant Coalition said the administration’s policies are ripping families and local communities apart. “It’s really important that people understand that what’s happening around

family separation isn’t only happening at the border, it’s happening within our country and it’s happening

in our state,” Castro said. The coalition has organized a phone bank to flood immigration authorities

with pleas to stop deporting undocumented people who have not been accused of a serious crime.

By Desert Star Staff House Democrats have rushed to table a resolution condemning Donald Trump for a series of angry tweets against four freshman congresswomen of color, which they said was a “blatant racist attack.” Sponsored by Tom Malinowski (D-New Jersey), the House’s resolution lambasted Donald Trump’s “racist comments,” which have “legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans.” The document, set for a vote on Tuesday, comes in response to the US president’s

recent tirade on Twitter. The tweets suggested that Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib “go back and help fix the totally broken and crimeinfested places from which they came.” They were further mocked by those who pointed out that three of the four women were born in the US. Malinowski is confident that the resolution will pass on a bipartisan basis, given its broad appeal and uncontroversial content. “Even if we may disagree on

the details of immigration or border policy, racism is wrong, is un-American. It’s not who we are,” he told the Hill. However, aside from two outspoken members of Congress, Will Hurd (Texas) and Michael Turner (Ohio), Republicans have been less willing to condemn the tweets formally. Most remained silent on Sunday when Trump initially posted the attacks, and public responses gradually trickled in on Monday. Republican Congressman Andy Harris defended Trump, telling WBAL radio: “Clearly it’s

not a racist comment. He could have meant going back to the district they came from, the neighborhood they came from.” Trump himself has dismissed accusations of racism, telling reporters “it doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me” during a White House event on Monday. He also lashed out particularly at Omar, claiming she “hates Israel” and “hates Jews.” Trump suggested that the Somalia native who sought refuge in the US once supported Al-Qaeda, but admitted he doesn’t know her in person.

Nevertheless, some Democrats don’t think Malinowski’s motion is sufficient to punish Trump for his “chaotic commentary.” Rep. Steve Cohen (Tennessee) accused the president of “cross[ing] a red line,” introducing a resolution to censure him formally. “Congress must censure him for this un-American and un-presidential language,” Cohen said in a statement on Monday. His resolution has nine co-sponsors, including all four of the congresswomen who Trump’s tweets attacked.
