By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) No matter how many times one sees one of the funniest, most hilarious, musical comedy-farce productions of the last 50 years, one still cannot help but enjoy the sheer madness and outrageous comedy audaciousness of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” , created by the legendary Broadway team of Stephen Sondheim, Burt Shevelove, and Larry Gelbart. The only comedy writer/ playwright with a better comedy track record than Shakespeare is the incomparable legendary

Neil Simon, author of more than 33 Broadway smash hits with three of them running simultaneously in a single season! No one has ever done that or is likely to achieve that again. Gelbart created TV’s MASH, Shevelove wrote Radio, TV, and movie comedies with Gelbart, and the Bard’s comedy credits are too numerous to list here. Need I say more? Which brings us then to the gold standard of The American musical comedy: Either “Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” or “Gypsy”. Take your pick. Both are bullet proof when it comes to music, lyrics, and librettos in structure, and execution. Both are just

flat out great entertainment. So as long as North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT) is presenting “Forum” as the final production of its 36th season, it’s proper and fitting to review one of the best examples of a block-buster musical hit for audiences of NCRT. “Forum” is the result of judicious research of playwrights of yore, by play director David Ellenstein, who did his homework well; coming up with a favorite of his and mine, as well. If I were to attempt to boil down a plot synopsis that would make sense of the onstage shenanigans from this gifted cast of top comedy-farceurs, I wouldn’t be able to finish this review in time for my paper. So with a mea culpa to Director Ellenstein, I’m borrowing and paraphrasing some his research notes. This wacky play was originally written and staged by bawdy Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus 2000 years ago. It’s a play about sly servants, senile skirt chasers, hen pecked husbands, domineering matrons, lovesick young, and comely courtesans, with hearts of gold; all mixed up in mistaken identities, disguises, double takes and double-entendres.

If Marty Burnett, resident Set Design wizard could take the NCRT production of “Around the World in 80 Days, on their cozy stage imagine what he and Lighting designer Matt Novotny could do with Rome, The Forum, and its environs, with the gorgeous gossamer costumes for sexy dancing girl outfits designed by Elisha Benzoni, along with authentic looking togas and robes for the male actors. The costume for Roman Captain Miles Gloriosus makes one want fall in line and March off to a battle somewhere. The choreography of Colleen Kollar Smith is tastefully done and is delicious to watch. In making all the silliness come alive belongs to a talented and gifted company professional actors, who when they find themselves on stage in a comedy-farce they know exactly what to do and how to do it. There are thirteen splendid actors who make the magic happen. NCRT artistic director David Ellenstein who is also the director of “Forum” made a smart choice in casting Omri Schein in the lead role of Pseudolus, the slave who will do anything to buy his freedom. It’s a star turn in a cast chock full of clever, talented, and inventive performers. Mr. Schein has energy and comedy

Kevin Hafso Koppman as Hysterium, delivers a highly nuanced comedy gem of a performance as the harrassed head servant/slave in the House of Senex; Andrew Ableson as Senex ; the man who can’t quite catch the young Virgin Philia, sweetly and naively played Noelle Marion; Chris M. Kauffmann as Hero, the love interest of Philia; Melinda Gilb as Domina, ‘she who must be obeyed’ and wife of Senex; John Greenleaf as Erronius, who keeps searching the Hills around Rome for his two children who were captured

ball onto the nearby Perisic, and the appealed for a penalty. Argentinian referee Nestor Pitana consulted VAR and although replays showed it may not have been intentional, pointed to the spot. The Croatian players surrounded the penalty spot to protest and leave Griezmann with what must have felt like an age to take the penalty, clutching the ball under his arm in anticipation of taking a spot kick in front of Croatia’s main end of fans. When the dust settled, the number 7 made no mistake in sending Subasic the wrong way and the ball into the left hand corner of the net, before wheeling away to practice his usual computer game celebration in front of the silent Croatia fans. With the goal, France entered the break ahead. When the restart got underway, France began to display their obvious quality which had been for the most part dormant for the first 45 minutes. Another flash of pace by Mbappe down the right-hand side left the Croatian defence in disarray as he centered the ball for Griezmann, who spotted Paul Pogba lurking on the edge of the area. The Manchester United man’s original right foot shot was blocked but when the ball landed at his feet a second time the midfielder slotted a left foot strike past an already committed Subasic with ease to see France put some daylight between them and Croatia.

Just six minutes later and it was teenager Mbappe’s turn to get in among the goals. After some wing wizardry by Lucas Hernandez on the left flank found the precocious teenager in acres of space for the striker to fire low and hard in the bottom left hand corner. Subasic may have felt he could have done better. With the score at 4-1 France were cruising which precipitated a lapse in concentration from French goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris, perhaps guilty of losing focus because of the stacked action at the other end, attempted to dribble out from his own goal. Mandzukic’s tackle was enough to dispossess the experienced stopper and notch a Croatian second goal. Despite the best efforts of the Croatians to force a third, they couldn’t find another opening and time agonizingly ebbed away. When the final whistle of the final match sounded, bringing a climactic end to the tournament, the French players rushed to the crowd to grab tricolors and run laps of honors around the Luzhniki turf, stopping short of the Croatia end, where the tears and silence of the fans contrasted their joy. They turned back to their own supporters, to where renditions of “La Marseillaise” could be heard and will surely keep on well into the Moscow night.

created a perfect storm for making cybercrime easier. President Trump has just formed a task force to oversee Cyber Security and fraud. The Defense Department recently stated that Cyber threat is the country’s No. 1 risk. Cyber Command is reportedly taking a more aggressive stance against international cyber threats in the face of increased attacks. Today’s technology would make all the fraud committed 50 years ago, 4,000 times easier. People are still writing 38 billion checks a year. Stealing checks is one of the easiest ways to take one’s identity. Your check will have your name, address and phone number, your bank’s name and address, your account number and routing number at the bank. Anyone who sees the face of that check could write down all the information and draft on your bank account or do an account takeover, by duplicating checks to look like yours and write checks against your account. Using a bank debit card is not safe. Every time you use one, you’re exposing the money in your bank account. The most secure payment in the world that removes all liability is a credit card because you are spending the credit card’s money, not your money. It is a good idea to keep excess cash in a money market account earning interest; then no one knows where it is because it’s not exposed. If someone steals your credit card number and charges $1 million on it, by federal law, your liability is zero. Cyber-attacks are expected to see about $6 trillion worldwide in cybercrime by the year 2020. Currently, it is all about stealing money,

but because of its capability to perpetrate bodily harm, it will become more dangerous. Analyst see technology more as a terrorist tool doing bodily harm to people. It is already possible to shut off someone’s pacemaker or commandeer a car from 35 feet away. In five years, it could do things like locking someone in their vehicle from 500 or 5,000 miles away? It is now coming to light that Social Media and the data collected from it can impact our ability to get jobs, ruin one’s reputation, and sadly, divide us as a people and a country. AI (Artificial Intelligence) gathering is hacking your identity. When you click “Like” on Facebook, it profiles who you are, your likes, dislikes, your political views and how vulnerable you are to a criminal act, etc. When you post pictures of your home, office or places you are visiting, it provides criminals with all the information they need to steal from you. With the advent that 12 Russians used cybersecurity to manipulate our election process, we should become more aware of how expanded the threats are. Russia’s plan will always be to “divide and conquer.” They have their hackers creating a lot of fake news, just so that we can get on social media and fight over it. Someday people will realize that Facebook and Instagram weren’t good things. Any time you’re controlling the psychology of 2 billion people, it becomes hazardous. We certainly give away too much information on social media: date of birth, birthplace, mother’s maiden name (etc.), then we wonder why people steal our identity. One day we’ll wake up and know that wasn’t a good thing to do.

Based on the fact, that over a billion identities have been stolen, you must assume that by now everybody’s character has been taken. Hackers do not cause breaches; people do. All that hackers do is look for doors to open and take advantage of open ones that are available. Every breach occurs because somebody in a company did something they were not supposed to do or failed to do something they should have. The Hacking of Equifax will eventually impact over 200 million people. It happened because someone at Equifax didn’t t fix their technology or update patches (bug fixes) sent by Microsoft, (etc.). Consequently, that negligence let the hacker get in. Someone hacked into the Charleston, South Carolina, tax revenue office and stole 3.8 million citizens’ tax returns. It turned out that an employee at the office had taken home a laptop they were not allowed to carry and went online in an unsecured environment. The hacker got in and stole all those returns. Credit monitoring may not help, since a breach to steal credit card information would have to be sold right away, as it has a concise “sell” time. Your name and Social Security number becomes more valuable because it can be held for a more extended period before it is sold and is more valuable due to the longer time frame. People are not aware it was stolen, then criminals have more time to take from you. Typically, a breach may surface three or four years later. If you suspect fraud or identity theft, some methods one might use to protect your credit is by freezing your credit.

If one day you wish to make a large purchase, you can unfreeze it, then freeze it back. A credit monitoring service is well worth the nominal monthly charge (about $14 mo.). It will allow you to look at credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and Transunion online to determine if anyone is attempting to use your credit. Identity theft can be used in many terrible ways, so one must be very pro-active. Purchasing a good shredder which shreds documents into confetti, like a micro-cut shredder will stop criminals. Do not throw anything out or donate it with your name, address, a barcode, source code and an I.D. number. That’s all a criminal would need to become you. What people think is worthless… can be of great value to a criminal. Even a magazine where one has used a marker to hide their name can be readily applied to obtain your identity. The majority of people are honest, but because they’re honest, they don’t have a receptive mind. So, when they get a phone call, and the Caller I.D. says it is the I.R.S. or other trusted entity, some may believe it. Caller I.D. is easily manipulated, and that scams are perpetrated that way. Seniors are especially targeted.

By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – The fifth annual Latino Conservation Week kicks off this Saturday with events in California and across the nation. The celebration starts with a launch event hosted by the group Nature for All, cleaning up part of the Los Angeles National Forest. Jenny Brandt is deputy director of conservation programs with the Hispanic Access Foundation, the group that started the week. She says it’s a chance to feature the communities’ commitment to protecting the environment. “We started Latino Conservation Week because we wanted to throw a spotlight on the really strong conservation values held by the Latino community,” says Brandt. Brandt says it’s also a chance for agencies like

the National Park Service to showcase nearby parks that Latino families can enjoy. The observance runs through July 22nd. A full list of events is online at ‘latinoconservationweek.com.’ Kimberly Orbe is a graduate of Nature for All’s leadership academy and she’ll be bringing students to Los Angeles National Forest for the Saturday kickoff event. Orbe says learning about public lands and how to appreciate and treat them has a big impact on young people. “I think that really teaches students and youth ownership of taking care of the land, and I think it’s so beneficial to get all youth across the board,” says Orbe, “whether it’s elementary, middle-school or high-school students – out there to really enjoy what’s theirs, because they grow up not being told that it’s theirs.”

On Saturday night Christine Tamara, San Bernardino County project coordinator with the Hispanic Access Foundation, will be bring kids to the Sky’s the Limit Observatory in Joshua Tree National Park for stargazing; and next Thursday, she’ll lead the Whitewater Preserve River Walk. Tamara says every time she takes kids out, they get very excited to see wildlife

– something they may not have experienced before. “To experience it live, you know,” says Tamara, “not through a phone or a tablet – I feel like it’s something that they need and also, they get an appreciation of being outside.” Other California events will be held at the San Gabriel River, San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area.

If the association has recorded video monitoring, the privacy interests of all residents are best protected by prohibiting residents or owners access to the recordings. I often draft policies providing access only to the manager, security company, and law enforcement. A certain director or committee chair will occasionally take too much an interest in watching their neighbors on recorded videos. County commissioners and the town council are expected to cast final votes on a proposal to encourage more residential development. Skye Schell, executive director of the Jackson Hole

PITCH YOUR SMALL BUSINESS LIKE A PRO

E

FAMILY FEATURES

ntrepreneurship is alive and well, even if the face of small business is evolving with the times. Autonomy in management and making dreams a reality are the reasons most cited by entrepreneurs looking to open a small business. Nearly half of all respondents in the annual The UPS Store “Inside Small Business Survey” said they’d be optimistic about opening a small business this year. Of respondents who hope to open a small business, top motivators include being their own bosses (38 percent), followed by believing in the power of their own ideas (17 percent) and creating their next career paths (15 percent). “The American Dream of owning your own business is still very much real, especially when compared to the rest of the developed world,” said Dr. Luke Pittaway, Ohio University College of Business Copeland Professor of Entrepreneurship. However, how Americans are choosing to open small businesses is where there may be a shift. “Consumer habits are changing,” Pittaway said. “That’s forcing Americans to consider how they open small businesses, whether it's focusing more on e-commerce than actual store fronts or focusing on selling to a local community or region instead of a broader national audience.”

Starting Your Own Start-Up

The process of launching a start-up can throw various unexpected obstacles your way, but there are numerous resources available to support a budding business. “We understand the challenges of small business owners and offer products and services designed specifically to help and support small

W businesses,” said Tim Davis, president of The UPS Store, Inc. “Small business owners are unparalleled in their passion for their businesses, and understanding that aspiration is critical to running a successful small business.” This action plan from the experts at The UPS Store can help you get you on your way to launching a successful start-up:

1. Analyze your target audience.

Start by performing extensive market research to understand your customers' core necessities. Assessing your target demographic gives you a clear perspective on how to serve the people in it.

2. Determine a legal structure. Selecting the right legal structure ultimately determines how you handle income taxes and all government reporting requirements. Many small businesses fall under a sole proprietorship or limited liability company (LLC) while bigger entities may identify as corporations.

3. Establish your premises.

Choosing the right business setting could be the difference between a costeffective start-up and a moderately expensive one. Your work space should fall within your monthly budget while still satisfying the needs of your customers.

4. Determine your budget and expenses.

Assessing your available funds enables you to prioritize and assign an appropriate amount to your business assets. This should include necessities for daily operations, as well as secondary expenses, such as traveling and meetings.

5. Develop a business plan.

Think of a business plan as a road map that indicates where your start-up stands and where it is headed. If you need funding, it’s also a great tool to articulate your ideas, philosophies and goals.

6. Set up a marketing plan.

Conduct an analysis of your business’s strengths and weaknesses to devise strategies and tactics that account for challenges and opportunities your business is likely to face. The scale of your marketing plan will likely depend on resources you have available and your target audience, but should feature a variety of tactics. Your plan should include printed materials like direct mailers, business cards, newsletters, flyers, banners and posters, as well as digital to cover things like search and social media.

7. Be competitive.

Examine your competitors to determine the areas in which they thrive and see what makes them successful. Learn from the landscape to improve upon their strengths and gain an upper hand on their weaknesses. For example, implement various pricing models, such as special offers, coupons and rewards, rather than sticking with your initial, low price to remain competitive and profitable. With a carefully structured action plan, you can turn your start-up idea into a successful business. Find more tips for your small business at TheUPSStore. com.

hen you’re launching a small business, there could be any number of reasons you may need to pitch your idea. You may be courting an investor, recruiting talent or even starting to market your product or service. Brevity is often essential, so learn how to concisely pitch your business like a pro with these tips: Draw out the essentials. Reduce your pitch to a few digestible bites. Make sure you have an intro that is brief enough to get someone’s undivided attention then elaborate on your points, such as your top competitive advantages, and provide more detail about your business as a whole. Come to entertain. Add an entertainment factor to make your pitch engaging and memorable. Of course, you need substance to go along with style, but keeping your audience focused and doing something to stand out is essential. Anticipate questions. Prepare yourself to reassure concerned investors and flesh out subjects you may have kept brief for your presentation. Make sure to practice your answers so you sound confident. Grabbing attention is important, but you need to be able to back up your spiel. Know your audience. This is the cardinal rule of communication. Make sure you do your homework and know who you are addressing. This shows you value your listener’s time and feedback. Furthermore, insight about his or her philosophy in doing business can be extremely valuable during a pitch. Practice until it hurts. Take the time to practice your entire pitch, including answers to likely questions, until you know it inside and out. The more comfortable you are, the more likely you are to win someone over in a meeting. Have the materials to back it up. A written document is your chance to leave a lasting impression and elaborate on your major selling points. It’s also a chance to show your professionalism, so be sure to proofread carefully and package the information for a polished presentation. MOMS: U.S. Should Not Discourage Breastfeeding

By Desert Star Staff FRANKFORT, Ky. — Some parents are still reeling from word of the United States’ opposition to a global resolution supporting breastfeeding. According to a New York Times article, the U.S. wanted to water down a World Health Assembly resolution promoting and protecting breastfeeding around the world. Alex Turpin with the Le Leche League of Louisville said she is worried about threats to the scarce breastfeeding resources that are available. She said a lot of parents are not able to get the support they need. “So then they rely on other government-funded resources such as WIC, where if you’re on Medicaid, you could go to the hospital you delivered at and see the lactation consultant there,” Turpin said. “And even with those resources, still a lot of parents don’t meet their own breastfeeding goals.” Turpin said while it’s understandable that not everyone chooses or is able to

breastfeed, she contends the U.S. should not be speaking out against a biologically important source of nutrition for babies. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services denied the U.S. is anti-breastfeeding, and argued the issue was about protecting “women’s abilities to make the best choices for the nutrition of their babies.” Co-founder of Moms Rising Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner said only 13 percent of moms are able to breastfeed at six months out, sometimes because of barriers in the workplace. She said the United States is behind other industrialized nations when it comes to supports for working mothers. “One hundred seventyseven other countries do have a paid family medical leave program,” Rowe-Finkbeiner said. “And studies show that when you have paid family medical leave programs, there is more time to establish breastfeeding to bond and to establish a healthy start in life.”

Just 13 percent of moms are able to breastfeed their child six months after birth. (Pixabay) Rowe-Finkbeiner noted that infant formula is a $70 billion industry, and said she believes the Trump Administration is putting corporate interests above public health. “That’s not to say that infant formula isn’t needed,” she said. “Women need to be

able to choose whether they can breastfeed or need formula or need both. We want people to have an option; we don’t want people to be railroaded.” She added that breastfeeding also has economic benefits. A Cambridge Health Alliance and

Harvard School of Medicine study found the U.S. could save nearly $13 billion a year in pediatric health costs and premature deaths if mothers could meet current medical recommendations for breastfeeding.

Calls in Congress for Investigation into Women Miscarrying in ICE Custody By Desert Star Staff LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – This week, members of Congress will continue their push for an investigation into the detention of pregnant women in Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. Numerous reports of pregnant women miscarrying and lacking proper health care in ICE custody were made public last week. The grassroots organization MomsRising has been following anecdotal stories since last

year, after hearing of one pregnant woman’s treatment in a California detention center. “We do not think this is an isolated incident,” says Nadia Hussain, the group’s campaign director for maternal justice. “In our research, we found that the lack of health care, lack of food of pregnant women and other pregnant women miscarrying, there’s a history of it. The difference is now. During the Obama administration, there was a policy that pregnant women should not be detained.”

The closest ICE detention centers to Arkansas are in Tulsa and Shreveport. In March, the Trump administration announced it would no longer automatically release pregnant immigrants from detention, but actually implemented the policy three months prior. A federal directive regarding the change in policy states that ICE is responsible for “ensuring pregnant detainees receive appropriate medical care including effectuating

transfers to facilities that are able to provide appropriate medical treatment.” But Hussain and others have heard reports that ICE is not abiding by the directive, denying medical care and shackling pregnant women, against the advice of medical professionals. Hussain describes the report from an immigrant at the California facility. “She was not given proper food,” Hussain relates. “She was not given rest.

They kind of ignored the fact that she was pregnant. “Detention itself is problematic, very much so, but especially detaining pregnant women who are already in a vulnerable position, health wise.” On Friday, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D) of California wrote a letter calling on the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General to investigate the detention of pregnant women in ICE facilities.

Kids May Be Missing Out On Essential Nutrients

Feeding America® and The Great American Milk Drive makes it easy to pour more milk for local kids in need By Desert Star Staff More than half of kids 9 and up fall short on essential nutrients they need to grow strong – calcium, vitamin D and potassium. In fact, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans identified them as nutrients of public health concern because many Americans, including kids, are not consuming enough of these nutrients. When school lets out for summer, that risk may be even greater for over 22 million kids who are served by free or reduced-price meal programs during the school year. For most kids, summertime means months filled with playing in the sun, swimming at the lake or baseball in the park – but for many, the start of summer marks the end of regular access to nutrient-rich foods including basic staples like milk that help their bodies and minds grow strong. Although some programs like the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) help to deliver meals when school is out, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) do not reach children during the summer months. “Milk is the top food source for calcium, vitamin D and potassium – three of the four nutrients kids are most likely missing,” said Dr. Tanya Altmann, best-selling author and nationally recognized pediatrician. “With 9 essential

nutrients, including 8 grams of high-quality protein per serving, milk is an easy and affordable way to provide key nutrients to children who might otherwise go without them during the summer months.” There is a nationwide need for nutrient-rich milk Milk is one of the most requested, but least donated items at food banks. That’s because while Americans are generous with canned and dry goods, fresh milk is a lot harder to donate because it’s perishable. On average, food banks are only able to provide the equivalent of less than one gallon per person per year, which is far less than enough to meet the recommended three servings of milk or milk products per day for kids 9 and older. That’s why, Feeding America® – the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief organization – has partnered with America’s dairy farmers and milk companies to help provide more fresh, nutritious milk to children in need through The Great American Milk Drive. Since it began, the program has delivered more than 1.5 million gallons – that’s more than 24 million servings – of fresh, nutritious milk to Feeding America’s nationwide network of 200 food banks. More than 46 million Americans – including 12 million children – rely on Feeding America each year

and food banks cannot always meet the demand – especially in the summer months, when they are even busier. “When people think about kids and summer, they think of carefree days spent having fun, but for those whose families struggle with hunger, even basic staples like milk may be missing,” said Andy Wilson, Chief Development Officer at Feeding America. “Our food banks do everything we can to provide nutritious foods to families in need. Thanks

to The Great American Milk Drive, many of our food banks are now able to provide more highly-desired milk during the summer months.” For as little as $5, you can help deliver a gallon of nutrient-rich milk to children in need in your local community. Breakfast Staple Could Help Kids Start the Day off Right By Desert Star Staff Eating a nutritious breakfast helps kids start their day off right, and new research reminds us why serving real dairy milk is so important for the first meal of the day. As little as 7 grams of milk protein at breakfast could help set kids up with building blocks they need to grow after a good night’s sleep, according to a new study in the Journal of Nutrition. It’s no secret that kids need nutritious foods to fuel their constantly growing bodies, but there’s a period of time when they’re not getting these nutrients – during sleep. Of course kids need sleep – and plenty of it - but as they slumber, they’re using up their body’s energy stores, and if they don’t refuel in the morning it could potentially impact their ability to grow. That’s why a proper breakfast is so important, to ensure kids make up for this overnight fast. In this new study, University of Toronto researchers gave 28 boys and girls ages 7-11 a breakfast of 170 calories that included 0, 7, 14 or 21 grams of milk protein. While more www.desertstarweekly.com

protein at breakfast was more beneficial, researchers found as little as 7 grams was enough to promote positive effects over the next nine hours. Serving an 8-ounce glass of milk, which has 8 grams of high-quality protein, each day at breakfast is an easy way to get kids protein they need to support optimal growth and development. In fact, a previous study in the American Journal of Human Biology suggests regularly drinking milk during the growing years (all the way through late teens/ early twenties) is associated with greater height in the teen years, while research in Osteoporosis International has linked regularly skipping milk to reduced height. , Milk is also an easy way to get kids B vitamins to convert food to energy, vitamin A to support a healthy immune system, and phosphorus, calcium and vitamin D to help build strong bones. That’s why experts recommend including milk in kids’ diets. And, with a taste they love, it’s a simple, wholesome and affordable addition to any morning meal.

Congenital heart conditions afflict about 40,000 babies -- nearly 1 percent of births -- annually. These defects can range from manageable to fatal: a valve that doesn’t fully close; abnormal connections of veins and arteries; even a hole inside the heart. Some heart defects can be treated with medicine; others require surgery. But too often, current technologies are insufficient for infants. Medical devices, including

those for the heart, are often designed for adults. That’s where the greatest demand is. So that’s where companies tend to focus their research, development, and production efforts. However, using adultsized products in children can be dangerous. Forcing an adult-sized valve into a baby’s tiny heart may ward off immediate death and give the child a few more months of life. But complications are common. For instance, an adult-sized valve can impede the flow of blood from the baby’s lungs or put pressure on the electrical circuitry of a tiny heart, resulting in the need for a pacemaker. Attempts to treat infants with adult-sized devices may be well-intentioned, but the heart defect is likely to win out in the end. As a cardiac surgeon, I’ve unfortunately seen that happen too often. I remember the case of an infant girl from New York City who was born with severe narrowing of her heart’s mitral valve. When she

How to Preserve the Miracle of Life for More American Families

By Dan Gutfinger Few occasions are more joyous than the birth of a child. But for scores of families, the arrival of a newborn can also augur heartbreak. Each day, nearly 100 U.S. babies are born with congenital heart defects. Many will not make it to their first birthday. Fortunately, several breakthrough technologies have emerged in recent years that could save many of these babies. It’s time we put them to more widespread use.

was nine months old, she received a replacement adultsized valve. But six months after her procedure, the replacement failed, causing her valve to narrow and restrict blood flow. Doctors relieved the obstruction temporarily. But eventually, her heart became too weak, and she passed away. Thankfully, scientists and companies are developing new ways to meet the needs of our smallest, most vulnerable patients. Researchers at the University of Maryland, for example, are testing the ability of adult stem cells to repair damaged infant heart tissue. A team at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is pioneering a procedure that uses umbilical cord blood to strengthen infant heart muscles. And just this year, Abbott, the company I work for, received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for a new heart valve for infants. At just 15 millimeters, it’s the smallest mechanical heart valve in the world.

This valve has already helped save the lives of numerous infants. One was a baby from Chicago who was born with a hole in her heart. At six months, her mitral valve started leaking following surgery to repair the hole. She went into heart failure. She was held in the ICU but she couldn’t tolerate food and wasn’t gaining weight. She received the small Abbott valve just in time -- and is now thriving. Today, we can fix many previously incurable heart defects thanks to a new crop of medical innovations designed specifically for our smallest patients. It’s up to the entire medical community make sure that newborns who could benefit from these life-changing technologies receive them. The Rhythm is Gonna Get You in ‘On Your Feet’

By Desert Star Staff “On Your Feet,” currently engaging audiences at the Pantages,” is a celebration of the songs sung by Gloria Estefan and her marriage to Emilio Estefan. The duo first meets in Cuba when her Grandmother introduces her to Emilio. Gloria is quite shy, but when she sits down at a small piano and begins to sing for him, it’s love at first sound. He is captivated by her voice and wants to make her the lead singer in his band. Christie Prades, who was with the Broadway production, now stars in the role of Gloria Estefan. Beautiful, with a great singing voice, she can also dance up a storm. Mexican actor and recording artist Mauricio Martinez played Emilio on Broadway at the end of the New York run and reprises that role here in Los Angeles. Together they make beautiful music at the Pantages. Nancy Ticotin shines as Gloria’s formidable mother who

is against Gloria leaving home for a musical career. She was a fantastic singer, but due to circumstances beyond her control she wasn’t able to leave Cuba to follow her dream, and now she stands in Gloria’s way. “On Your Feet,” a love story filled with beautiful Latin music, deals not only with Gloria and Emilio’s phenomenal success, but it also chronicles Gloria’s struggle to walk again after a severe tour bus accident in 1990. Their road to success was not always easy, and at one point Emilio sends band members out on the streets with recordings to give away to the public. His plan works, and eventually, their music is played on the radio. And the rest is music history. Act I ends with Miami Sound Machine’s 1985 smash hit “Conga.” At this point, the cast comes out into the audience and dances with willing audience members. The music is so full of life I too would have loved to Conga

with them, but we had center seats. Also, I still haven’t regained my balance after breaking a leg not long ago. “On Your Feet” is filled with Gloria’s hits including “1-2-3,” “Don’t Wanna Lose You,” “Get On Your Feet,” “Here We Are,” “Party Time,” “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Oye Mi Canto,” “Everlasting Love,” “Turn The Beat Around,” “If I Never Got to

Tell You,” “When Someone Comes Into Your Life,” “Cuba Libre,” “Conga,” “I See Your Smile” and many more. The show was directed by Jerry Mitchell (“Kinky Boots,” “Legally Blonde”), written by Alexander Dinelaris (Oscarwinning co-writer “Birdman”) and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (“Jersey Boys”). And five of the ten members of the excellent onstage band was

with the Miami Sound Machine. When the show ended the audience was on their feet, giving the cast a rousing, welldeserved standing ovation. “On Your Feet” at the Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood ends July 29th. Tickets: $39-$145. For information call (800) 982-2787 or www.HollywoodPantages. com/OnYourFeet.

5 Tips for Bringing Your Pet to Work this Summer

By Desert Star Staff During the summer months, many employers plan events and switch up work schedules to give their team members a break to enjoy some fun in the sun. Extra days off, summer hours and company picnics are just a few of the ways employers create an enjoyable environment for their employees. In a competitive talent market, employers are typically looking for new ways to provide the latest and greatest in employee benefits, eager to be the best place to work. One of the latest benefits to come to the corporate world is incorporating a dog-friendly atmosphere. In fact, a survey from Mars Petcare found that 87 percent of employers in the United States believe that being dog-friendly helps them retain and attract more talent. “Having pets in the workplace can boost morale, www.desertstarweekly.com

increase physical activity and even improve productivity,” said Cheryl DeSantis, vice president of people and organization at Mars Petcare. “Our survey findings also discovered that nearly half of pet parents are concerned their pets are lonely while they are at work, and nearly 40 percent worry their dogs need to be walked and are either hungry or thirsty while they’re home alone. Bringing their pets to work with them can drastically eliminate these concerns.” Keeping these five tips in mind when bringing your furry friend to work can help ensure a fun and safe time for all: • Put safety first. Keep your dog out of pet-free areas by using a leash, gate or crate while you are at work. If you are leaving your area, be sure to fetch your pup so he is never left unattended. • Give everyone – even

dogs – a desk break. When you decide to get a drink of water or step away from your desk for a few minutes, it’s probably time for your furry friend to

go on a break, too. Take your dog for a quick walk to stretch his legs, do his business and smell the summer flowers. • Follow the golden rule and always ask permission. It’s important to always ask permission to pet anyone’s dog, your coworkers’ included, since they know the best way to approach their pups. New environments and smells may lead to overstimulation for some pets, so if your canine companion gets overexcited, aggressive or anxious around your coworkers, be sure to take him outside for some fresh air, or even home, if necessary. • Entertain your pet. If your pet is bored, he may act out. Don’t forget to play with your pup periodically and be

By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON — A new report finds contradictory stereotypes about Native Americans persist in the United States. Researchers say it’s the largest public-opinion research project about Native Americans ever conducted. Crystal Echo Hawk, project leader, said the goal of the report, Reclaiming Native Truth, is to find out about the dominant narratives and perceptions of native people from a diverse group of Americans. It included focus groups spanning 11 states and involving people of every race. Echo Hawk said negative stereotypes include ideas that they’re dependent on the government, but also flush with casino money. “What we actually found is the biggest barrier that Native Americans face is invisibility and erasure, in the fact that you don’t see native peoples in the media; you don’t see them on TV and film,” Echo Hawk said. “And in fact, almost 50 percent of K-12 schools in the United States don’t teach about

they had a firm belief that tribes should be able to manage their land and resources and water as they saw fit,” Roberts said. Roberts said because Native Americans make up less than 2 percent of the country’s population, they can’t change the narrative on their own. The report also includes a guide for people who want to work alongside indigenous people to change negative stereotypes. Dr. Stephanie Fryberg, an association professor at the University of Washington who contributed to this research, said many still hold onto a 19th century view of Native Americans, and this has a real psychological effect on youth. She said using stereotypes of Native Americans as sports mascots also damages young people’s since of self-worth. Fryberg said even people’s romanticized portrayal of indigenous people can be dehumanizing. “We have to be allowed to be contemporary people and not constantly be located by America as historical figures somehow frozen in time,”

Artist: Gene Clark Title: Gene Clark Sings for You (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Byrds, Gram Parsons Tell me more: Omnivore Recordings has recently released previously unheard post-Byrds recordings from Gene Clark. The good news for fans of the Byrds’ early material as well as of Clark’s solo work is this is an exciting new collection (“Gene Clark Sings for You”) that celebrates and expands the legacy of an important artist whose groundbreaking solo work was often overlooked in his lifetime (he died at the age of 46 in May 1991). Clark was the principal songwriter in the Byrds from 1964 to early 1966, writing classics such as

“I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better,” “Set You Free This Time” and “She Don’t Care About Time.” Comprised of tracks recorded in 1967, “Gene Clark Sings for You” explore folk rock with beauty and insight. The opener “On Her Own” features Clark’s signature vocal styling and taps into a wistful ‘60s sound. The follow-up “Past Tense” is even stronger, an upbeat folk rocker that captures the magic of his work with the Byrds but also foreshadows the alt-country movement of that latter part of the ‘60s and early ‘70s. Other nuggets on the album include the wistful “That’s Alright by Me” and baroqueflavored “Down on the Pier.” In addition to the eight actual tracks pulled from the “Gene Clark Sings for You” acetate in the aftermath of his departure from the Byrds, there are an additional five songs from another 1967 acetate given to the Rose Garden for that band’s consideration (Omnivore have simultaneously released their 1968 album; it is reviewed later in this column). A final track, a lovely acoustic demo of “Till Today,” features Clark running through the song for the Rose Garden. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com. Artist: The Rose Garden Title: A Trip Through the Garden: The Rose Garden Collection

(Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Gene Clark, the Hollies, Sonny & Cher Tell me more: Just listening to the expanded reissue of the Rose Garden’s eponymous album is to hear why the best music from the 1960s continues to resonant so strongly a half century later. “A Trip Through the Garden: The Rose Garden Collection” shines a bright light on the Rose Garden, a troupe best known for their hit single “Next Plane to London.” The quintet’s full talents are on display on the expansive 26-track collection issued earlier this summer. John Noreen’s nuanced 12-track guitar adorns the pretty “I’m Only Second,” while everywhere the lead vocals of Diana DeRose and James Groshong entice the listener. Beyond the sterling original material there are memorable covers of material by the celebrated likes of Gene Clark (“Long Time”), Neil Young (“Down to the Wire”), Bob Dylan (“She Belongs to Me”) and the Byrds (“So You Want to be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star”). There is also an outstanding 20-page, full illustrated booklet that further completes a complete re-introduction to the Los Angeles-spawned Rose Garden. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com

Native Americans past 1890.” Nearly three-quarters of respondents said schools need to make significant curriculum changes on Native American culture and history. Echo Hawk said she hopes the report also acts as a road map to create more positive narratives for Native Americans. Michael Roberts is president and CEO of First Nations Development Institute, which led the project alongside Echo Hawk Consulting. He said in some ways, disparaging remarks about Native Americans from President Donald Trump may have led non-native respondents to this project to be more honest. Research for the report also happened to coincide with protests against the Dakota Access pipeline, and Roberts said that provided an opportunity to measure people’s opinions of Native Americans during this monumental action. “A big one for us that came, I think, directly out of DAPL was, while they didn’t understand tribal sovereignty,

I wanted Trump to win – Putin

By Desert Star Staff Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has revealed that he actually wanted Donald Trump to win the 2016 US presidential election. Russia, however, did not contribute to Trump’s win by any means, he insisted. “Yes, I wanted him to win, because he talked about the need to normalize US-Russia ties,” Putin said, answering a direct question from a journalist during the joint press conference with Donald Trump following the Helsinki summit. The Russian president left the second part of the question unanswered, however, regarding whether he “instructed” his officials

to help Trump, since he had discussed the allegations of meddling earlier during the press conference. “Russia did not interfere and is not going to interfere into American domestic affairs,” Putin stated, adding that this point had been made repeatedly. Moscow was ready to participate in a joint investigation with the US of the any such allegations, however, if any real evidence was presented, the Russian leader said. Such work could be conducted by a joint RussianUS cybersecurity group, the idea of which was floated by Putin during his last meeting with Trump in Hamburg.

‘No collusion, I didn’t know Putin to collude with him’

By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump hailed “deeply productive dialog” with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, and asserted that there was no collusion between his campaign and Russia in 2016 while standing next to the Russian leader. “There was no collusion,” Trump told reporters. “I didn’t know the President (Putin), there was nobody to collude with.” Trump has repeatedly denied accusations of ‘Russian collusion,’ but

Monday’s press conference marked the first time that the President has addressed the rumors alongside Putin. “We ran a brilliant campaign, and that’s why I’m president,” Trump added. “I beat Hillary Clinton easily...and it’s a shame that there could even be a little bit of a cloud over it.” Trump went on to blast proponents of the ‘Russiagate’ conspiracy theory for undermining the relationship between the world’s two largest nuclear powers, and called

White House Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing and unsuccessful probe “ridiculous.” When asked about alleged collusion, Putin challenged reporters to show “one single piece of evidence” that Russia attempted to influence the 2016 election. He added that if Special Counsel Mueller were to send an official request, then both countries could launch a joint investigation into the collusion claims. After Monday’s meeting, Trump acknowledged that

relations between the US and Russia have “never been worse,” but added “that all changed about four hours ago,” referencing his private meeting with the Russian President. Addressing criticism of the meeting from commentators at home, Trump stated that he “would rather take a political risk in pursuit of peace, than risk peace in pursuit of politics.” The US president pledged to work together with Putin on areas of shared interest, including the denuclearization

One-on-one meeting with Putin a ‘good start’

By Desert Star Staff President Donald Trump described his much-anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “off to a good start,” after meeting one-on-one with Putin for over two hours on Monday. Trump made his remarks to reporters before the start of a ‘working lunch’ with Putin and his aides, which followed the two leader’s private session. Before meeting with Putin, Trump said that the US and Russia will end up having an “extraordinary relationship,” despite current difficulties, adding “I think the world wants to see us get along.” Before

his private discussion with Putin, Trump told reporters that he intended to discuss “everything from trade to military to missiles to nuclear to China.” Before the summit, Trump blamed previous administrations for the deterioration in relations between the US and Russia, tweeting: “Our relationship with Russia has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of U.S. foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!” - a reference to the ongoing and thus far unsuccessful Mueller investigation. 5 Ways to Squash Back-to-School Stress

By Desert Star Staff Heading back to school is exciting for both kids and parents, but with all the thrill and anticipation, there can be quite a bit of stress, too. As a parent, you can approach the impending school year with a positive attitude and these tricks can help minimize stress and give your kids extra confidence when heading into the classroom. Lifestyle expert and mother of two Jeannette Kaplun recommends these tips: Start adjusting bedtimes before school starts. It’s common for bedtime rules to be broken in the summer. However, an abrupt transition to early mornings can lead to stress and irritability. The National Sleep Foundation recommends implementing earlier bedtimes two weeks before school starts and setting the alarm a bit earlier each morning for a smooth transition to the first day of school. Curb the summer slide. Screen time isn’t just for passing time; leverage technology to keep the reading skills your kids learned in the classroom sharp all summer long. A device like the Fire Kids Edition tablet from Amazon is built from the ground up for kids with a two-year worry-free

guarantee, a kid-proof case and a one-year subscription to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, giving kids access to 15,000 kid-friendly books, videos, educational apps and games. Parental controls like Learn First encourage learning before playtime and allow you to set screen time limits to help get kids back into a routine for the school year. Additionally, STEM toys and games can keep math and science top of mind during the summer months and help kids excel during the school year. Dress for success. There’s a reason grownups tend to dress up for special events when you look good, you feel good. Give your kids that same boost by helping them choose a special outfit for the first day of school that he or she feels comfortable and confident wearing. Shopping for clothes is an opportunity for your child to express individuality, so have fun with it. For added stress relief, lay out the complete ensemble the night before and have your child try it on to head off any concerns. If the routine works, try making it part of your nightly routine for stress-free mornings throughout the school year. Simplify the shopping experience. Every back-toschool season comes with

Photo courtesy of Getty Images classroom supply lists and new wardrobe needs. A one-stop shop retailer like Amazon lets you complete your shopping on your own schedule, and its back-to-school store offers deals and a wide selection, making it easy to find everything from must-have items like binders, backpacks and shoes to fun gear such as glitter glue, donut erasers and emoji stickers that allow kids to express their personalities. “Back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to cause anxiety,” Kaplun said. “By shopping

online at Amazon from your phone, tablet or computer, you can buy everything you need without having to find a parking spot, tracking down a sales associate to help you find your child’s size or standing in line to pay, saving you precious time. Plus, Prime members receive unlimited, free two-day shipping on more than 100 million items all-year long.” Share the excitement. It’s perfectly normal for parents and kids to feel anxious about the new school year. Instead of revealing your

5 Tips for Raising Resilient Kids

Photo courtesy of Getty Images (Boy riding bike) By Desert Star Staff Parenting, while providing plenty of excitement, comes with a certain set of challenges. With years of outdoor playtime ahead, one of those challenges is ensuring safety while still promoting an adventurous spirit. A child’s ability to push through, endure struggle, fail and try again can help encourage long-term success and happiness. Still, many parents feel pressure to be overprotective and prevent their kids from any bumps and scrapes along the road of life. Jessie Graff, Hollywood

stuntwoman and a breakout star of NBC’s American Ninja Warrior, and Nexcare recommend these “tough love” tips that encourage parents to overcome their fears, take a step back and let their kids build resiliency and mental toughness by taking reasonable risks. “As a child, my parents supported me when I wanted to push myself and take some physical risks,” Graff said. “That led to plenty of scrapes and bruises, but ultimately helped me build confidence and mental toughness while I honed my physical skills.

That freedom is what helped me accomplish my dreams.” 1. Teach Them How to

Fall: When kids know how to fall safely, they have the freedom and confidence to try almost anything. Additionally, it can help reinforce your confidence as a parent that your little ones are watching out for themselves. 2. Every Fall is a Lesson: After a fall, your first instinct as a parent likely is to run over and coddle your kids. Instead, congratulate them on the risk they took and work on building their mental and physical toughness by reminding them everyone falls and persistence makes them heroic. 3. Train to Treat a Scratch: Instead of “fixing boo boos,” use every scrape as a lesson on caring for broken skin. One way to promote that healthy way of thinking is with Nexcare Waterproof

own apprehension, share your favorite memories from your time in your child’s upcoming grade. Ask your kids what they’re most excited for and what they’re a little nervous about and come up with solutions together. Teach Risk Evaluation: Help instill and build the skill of risk evaluation in your kids. Then you’ll be able to trust them – and they’ll trust themselves – to make decisions on their own. 5. Building Confidence for Both of You: It takes time for kids to be daring on their own, but building trust and confidence in them can be done through practice. Start with small risks, then slowly build in fun, new challenges. This allows them to master risks with you by their side, which makes trusting them to handle it on their own a natural next step. Must Improve Pedestrian Safety

Phoenix Police report the city has seen 40 pedestrian deaths so far in 2018, on track to surpass the 56 pedestrian deaths recorded in all of 2017. (Casey Fiesler/Flickr)

By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX - Arizona has a long reputation as a popular state for retirement, and as the Baby Boomer generation ages and people live longer, the state is likely to see more residents who don’t drive. Their advocates say it’s important that the state do more to consider the safety of older pedestrians. Arizona has the most pedestrian fatalities per capita of any U.S. state, according to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association. The problem disproportionately affects adults age 65 and older. Steve Jennings, associate state director of AARP Arizona, said much of the state’s economy is based on retirees moving in. “So, if we want to continue this trend,” he said, “the more we could design the environments of our cities and the places people live to be friendly for people with all modes of transportation.” Since 2014, the city of Phoenix has been working on a “Complete Streets” initiative

to make roadways safer in the state’s largest metro area. However, several members of the Complete Streets advisory board resigned recently, saying the city has failed to adopt important design guidelines. C.J. Hager, director of healthy community policies for Vitalyst Health, remained on the board and said the city could protect vulnerable populations by establishing guidelines to reduce speed limits, calibrate crosswalks to allow more time for pedestrians, or create street signs that are clearer for people with visual impairments. “We need to consider every pedestrian and cyclist death very seriously, and not consider them an accident,” she said. “There are things that we can do differently in our street environment that can help prevent those crashes from happening.” Hager said she hopes to see the Complete Streets plans move forward to protect not only older adults but everyone on the road.

Oil Development in Uintah Basin Will Threaten Health

By Desert Star Staff VERNAL, Utah — Estonian company Enefit American Oil for years has been eyeing northeastern Utah for what would be the largest oil shale operation in the country. Among those opposed to the prospect are doctors, who say the project poses major public health threats. The project is planned for 30,000 acres of land in Uintah County. The land is privately owned, but the project requires Bureau of Land Management approval for a utility corridor to connect the site with water and electricity, which the BLM is on track to grant. Several groups are speaking out, saying the BLM has failed to fully consider the impacts of oil operations. Dr. Brian Moench, board president of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, said emissions from oil development are disastrous for health. “Hundreds of studies have documented the toxicity of those kinds of chemicals,” Moench said. “And the toxicity ranges from birth defects to cancer to chronic adult diseases, autoimmune disorders and things like that.” Enefit American Oil says its project will be safe, environmentally sound, and will create jobs. Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, along with other groups, sent a 44-page letter to the BLM last week citing numerous studies to counter the oil company’s environmental and health claims. The Uintah Basin already has a lot of oil and gas production, and a 2013 study

The University of Colorado found the Uintah Basin’s bowl shape and snowy conditions trap emissions of methane and other gases from nearby oil wells, causing high ozone pollution. (Covee/Flickr) from the University of Colorado documented huge spikes in air pollution in the region. Researchers noted that at certain times, the rural area saw ozone pollution as much as three-times higher than what might be seen in Manhattan. Moench said that should be a red flag. “We have absolute proof

that, in fact, there is a pollution nightmare already in the area. We have proof that it’s caused by the oil and gas industry,” he said. “Any sort of new arm of the oil and gas industry is likely to make that even worse.” Moench said his organization became concerned about the Uintah Basin after several stillbirths

and infant deaths there in 2012 and 2013. A 2015 Utah Department of Health study of Adverse Birth Outcomes in the area placed more emphasis on maternal behavior than environmental factors, but noted the findings were based on a small statistical sample.
