‘Earth’s Core Leaking’ Earth’s magnetic field, critical to all life, may be in danger from ‘leaking core’ By Desert Star Staff Scientists studying the earth’s core, vital to protecting us from dangerous highenergy particles from space, believe not only that it is leaking, but that it has been for about 2.5 billion years. While the cause of the leak remains unknown, as do the consequences for the Earth’s magnetic field,
scientists appear to have resolved the decades-old debate about whether the Earth’s core and mantle exchange material or not. The core is composed of iron and nickel, and with elements like platinum, gold, and tungsten. It reaches temperatures of 5,000 degrees Celsius (9,000 Fahrenheit) and many believe
it’s responsible for up to 50 percent of the volcanic heat released around the planet. The researchers, from French, Canadian, US and Australian universities, found newer mountains and rocks on the Earth’s surface featuring tungsten isotopes which are typically found in the outer core, but no farther up. As a result, the team posits that so-
called ‘mantle plumes’ brought core material to the surface. There was no evidence of leaks prior to this recent discovery. The implications of the research are still unclear. However, we know that the spinning solid part of the core is responsible for the Earth’s magnetosphere which helps protect us from the nastiest particles firing around space.
Scientists believe that the liquid part of the core is slowly solidifying and this latest research may provide unique insights into both the evolution of the Earth’s core as well as the origin of our allimportant magnetosphere. The research was published recently in GeochemicalPerspective Letters.
California’s New Roadmap to Tackle Uptick in Disaster By Desert Star Staff Sacramento – Six strategies stand to amplify whole community emergency preparedness and improve coordination of community assets for disaster response and recovery, describes a report released today by California Volunteers, Office of the Governor. In response to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s call to build community resiliency and ready the state for earthquake, wildfire, drought, and flood, the report developed in collaboration with Monitor Institute by Deloitte presents
solutions to leverage nonprofit, community-based, faithbased, and private-sector resources while working with the public sector. A roadmap offers investment strategies to effectively channel privatesector resources, spur cross-sector coordination, and bolster the capacity of local communities to strengthen resilience. “Gone are the days when we let a single “blue sky day” slip away because the next earthquake, wildfire, and other natural disaster is Continues on Page 6
‘4 horsewomen’ of Dem ‘squad’ poll low amid Trump tweetfest
By Desert Star Staff The four Democratic congresswomen feuding with US President Donald Trump are not polling well nationwide, suggesting the president is right that “a lot of people love”
his criticism of the women as anti-American “whack jobs.” Only Ayana Pressley (D-Massachusetts) had a positive public perception in an Economist/YouGov poll conducted in the two days
following Trump’s Twitter attacks, with a net favorability rating of +4. Fully three-fifths of the 1,500 people YouGov polled online weren’t sure how they felt about her, however. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan)
fared significantly worse with a net favorability rating of -7, though she was marginally more popular than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at -8. And Ilhan Omar, who at -9 was considered the least favorable candidate of the “squad” among those surveyed. While a significant portion of those surveyed had no opinion on Tlaib (45 percent) or Omar (41 percent), only 26 percent had not yet formed an opinion on Ocasio-Cortez. Suggesting she has broken out of the media-political silo to become a celebrity in her own right – if not exactly a beloved one. And while the congresswomen Trump has termed “the four horsewomen of the Apocalypse” aren’t winning any popularity contests nationwide. They’re still polling higher than the Democratic Party in general,
which rated a -10 among those polled by YouGov. While the rest of the House Democrats have appeared to circle the wagons around their party’s most outspoken members, centrists are reportedly not too happy about defending what they consider the radical fringe. Others – including, ironically, the ladies of the hour themselves – find the focus on the feud to be a distraction from the job they were sent to Washington to do. Trump, on the other hand, is riding high among both members of his party and the general public, with some polls placing his nationwide approval rating as high as 50 percent. A four-point spike since before he sent the fateful tweets – even as another poll showed 47 percent of respondents thought he was a racist.
‘SEND HER BACK’: Trump crowds have new MAGA chant By Desert Star Staff The crowd at Donald Trump’s campaign rally in North Carolina erupted in a loud chant of ‘Send her back!’ after the US president fired a fresh broadside at Somali-American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Trump took the opportunity of his Make America Great Again rally in Greenville, North Carolina on Wednesday to launch another attack at one of his favorite targets of the past week: Rep. Ilhan Omar of the four-woman progressive ‘squad’ he’s been feuding with. Trump accused Omar of blaming the US for causing terrorist attacks by “saying that terrorism is a reaction to our involvement in other people’s affairs,” smearing the US servicemen involved in the Somalian civil war, “minimizing” the 9/11 attacks, and “pleading
for compassion for ISIS recruits.” Concluding his tirade, Trump accused Omar of supporting Al-Qaeda, misquoting her remark from 2013. Accurate or not, Trump’s rant whipped up the crowd enough for it to break into chanting, “Send her back!” That comes just a day after the House passed a resolution condemning a series of “racist” tweets by Trump, in which he suggested the four congresswomen should go back to the “broken and crime-infested places from which they came.” Omar is the only one of the ‘squad’ to whom the call technically applies since the other three women were born in the US. The new war cry is a remix of the permanent fixture of almost every Trump rally – the infamous “Lock her up”
slogan, targeting Hillary Clinton and her private server email scandal. Some on Twitter have rushed to declare this the turning point of an era.
Predictably, the chant has sparked fresh accusations of racism towards the president – and even some conservatives thought it in poor taste.
It did not take long for Omar to respond, shooting back with a quote by American poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou.
Move to Treat Separation, Detention of Migrant Children as Child Abuse By Desert Star Staff EL PASO, Texas – Social workers and mental health professionals are trying to have the detention of migrant children away from their families treated as child abuse. Almost 6,000 people have signed a petition started by social workers to file a “report of suspected abuse and neglect of migrant and refugee children” locked up by the U.S. government. The administration of President Donald Trump describes the separation and detention policy as a “deterrent” to families entering the country. But Fabiola Ekleberry, a counselor and psychotherapist in El Paso, says taking children from their parents is abusive,

no matter the justification. “This is abuse, what we’re doing,” she stresses. “This is not acceptable. It’s like telling a kid, ‘If you don’t listen to me, I’m going to beat you.’ “And the kid still does something, and then you beat them up. But you know what kind of pain you’re going to inflict on them. That’s still abuse.” Ekleberry says she is legally required to report it when anyone abuses a child. More than 3,000 migrant children have been forcibly separated and, at least for a time, detained. The administration has admitted it has not tracked and will have trouble reuniting some of the families. According to a recent
congressional investigation, 18 infants and toddlers younger than two years old have been taken from their families. It found nine babies younger than one year old have been separated and detained. Mark Lusk, a University of Texas at El Paso professor of social work, describes that as a criminal. He says it could harm the children for life. “It is particularly worrisome in the first and second year of life – creates separation anxiety, and confusion and anxiety in young children that is very, very hard to remediate,” he states. “It can’t be replaced by having other caregivers around. It’s very alarming that this has been going on.” Lusk says the policy July 19, 2019
has been condemned by the American Pediatric Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Medical Association, among others.
He says many counselors would like to meet with the children for free, but no one outside the system is allowed into the detention centers.

Community Challenge Grants Improve Livability Across CA
By Desert Star Staff SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Four California communities will see some significant improvements in the next few months – thanks to the 2019 AARP Community Challenge Grant program. West Sacramento will use data to identify seniors most at risk of a house fire, then distribute smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust will build a new age-friendly park that accommodates people with limited mobility. The Thai Community Development Center in East Hollywood will be more accessible. And Erik Tilkemeier, director of economic and urban

This is the third year that AARP has awarded the grants, some as large as $37,000, to promote vibrant public spaces, greater accessibility, data-driven Smart Cities projects, improved transit, and affordable housing. The City Heights Development Corporation in San Diego won AARP Community Challenge grants in 2018 and 2019. This park in El Cajon debuted last fall. (CHDC) competed for the grants, and about 10% made the cut. “One-hundred-59 grantees were selected, and a total of nearly $1.6 million will be distributed to fund these quick
action grants across the country,” he states. “And they’ll help to make immediate improvements and jumpstart long-term progress to support residents of all ages.” The program is part of

More than half of the 48 billion robocalls placed to Americans in 2018 were classified as scams or telemarketing pitches. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff Those annoying robocalls that drive people crazy are the targets of a bill before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology today. The “Stopping Bad Robocalls Act” would require the Federal Communications Commission to adopt consumer-protection rules, forcing telecom companies to install technology that would identify and block more of the calls. Maureen Mahoney, a Consumer Reports policy analyst, said many come from scammers who manipulate caller ID displays to make it look like their call is coming from a local number. “Many of these calls have spoofed caller ID, and that makes it trickier to block these calls,” she said. “So, by requiring technology that would authenticate caller ID, phone
companies will be better enabled to block calls with confidence automatically.” The bill, which has bipartisan support, also would make it easier to pursue violators. According
to the company You Mail, which tracks spam calls, Americans received almost 48 billion robocalls in 2018, an increase of more than 56% over the year before. Mahoney said the Do-

She said some phone companies already are offering to help their customers with this issue. “Some phone companies have started to implement free tools that will help identify and block robocalls before they reach the consumer,” she said. “So, I would reach out to your phone company and ask them what tools they offer for free that are advanced and effective in stopping these calls.” The legislation also would prevent phone companies from charging customers for anti-robocall technology. Leroy From The North at Pappy and Harriet’s August 15th
Ragged, Raw and Soul Deep, Leroy From the North Aims For The Rhythmic Heart Of American Roots. By Desert Star Staff Los Angeles, CA—Leroy From The North is the brainchild of guitarist and singersongwriter, Eli Wulfmeier. You may recognize Wulfmeier’s name from playing and touring with music notables such as Katy Rose, Brian Wright, Shelby Lynne, Joe Purdy, and Jonny Fritz. He also played guitar with Interscope Records band, The Wild Feathers for close to 3 years and is a member of the band, Dorothy. “I think that playing with others, has had a positive impact on my writing,” claims Wulfmeier. “This last year has been spent writing a lot while I was nonstop touring with Dorothy. All that time away allowed me to work on lyrics and absorb different cultures and scenery. I’m grateful for the experience.” Originally from Michigan and now based in Los Angeles, his music is influenced by the sound of the 70’s country gold, mixed with a little Detroit steel. Wulfmeier defines it as “Straight forward, guitar-driven rock with a slight drawl.” Joe Armstrong of Independent’s Day Radio wrote that “He sounds like an apple that fell directly off The Allman Brothers Tree. On guitar, his trick bag is full of tried and true rock and roll licks, and he executes them with smooth flair and tasteful approach that can at times lean toward the incendiary.” Health and Fitness is the first official release of Leroy
From The North, but there will be an L.P. of all-new material following on its heels that is set to release this fall, 2019. The 5-song E.P. was produced and engineered by Geoff Neal (Chris Robinson, Black Keys, Dwight Yoakam) and was recorded at the legendary Hollywood studio, Sunset Sound. “For this EP I wanted to bring in some songs that I had finished and just see how they developed with a band,” Wulfmeier explains. “We started playing ‘Here in my Home,’ ‘Hey Man,’ and ‘Into the Sunset’ live to see how they felt in the set, so those moved along fairly quickly in the studio. ‘Locked Out’ and ‘Fast Friends’ I had recorded earlier with Daxx Nielsen on drums, Johnny Flaugher on bass, and Rai Thistlewait on keys. Those songs just seemed to round out the E.P., so it made sense to add them. I think the overall vision was to create an E.P. that had some teeth but was still fun.” Health and Fitness kick off with “Here in my Home,” a song about isolation and trying to keep up with an ever-evolving society. “I wanted the song to sound heavy with guitars and be a bit more delicate in the verses to accentuate the conflict,” he explains. The classic Southern rock feel of “Into the Sunset” is a more light-hearted tune about overcoming adversity and feeling that things will turn out okay in the long run.
“Locked Out” has the overtones of 70’s era Gordon Lightfoot. “To me, it feels like a hangover,” Wulfmeier noted. “The lyrics are about someone who is trying to hold on to a relationship, but he just can’t help himself. He makes the wrong move at every turn and just can’t win.” “Fast Friends” is a rhythmic rocker that is simply about becoming better friends after a fight. “Hey Man” touches again on the theme of isolation and confusion and voices a bit of outrage fatigue. “This song was a way to express my concern with the way our privacy is quickly going away, and how we willingly allow it to happen,” he explained. “Social media has us rating each other constantly, and I find that a bit off-putting. It’s
tough because it feels like we have to participate in all of it or there’s a possibility of being left behind professionally and socially. I wanted this song to have a sort of tension and release at the end. Sort of a ‘fuck it, let’s have fun’”. In high-school Wulfmeier played in clubs around Detroit. From there he moved out to California and went back and forth between San Francisco and Los Angeles picking up gigs. Eventually, he got an audition as a guitar player with Katy Rose and toured for a year with her. Following that he started a band called, Lexington Queen that played around L.A. for a few years. After the band ended, he took an internship at Interscope Records, where he landed in a band the label
put together called, The Wild Feathers. “They were a band the label wanted to model after The Eagles, so it forced me to become more of a singer and lyricist,“ he pointed out. It was that experience that pushed me to start Leroy From The North.” “Making Health and Fitness was meaningful,” Wulfmeier expressed. “I got to record with all of my friends. I’ve played with many of them in different bands, so it was nice to have the familiarity and professional respect. We had a blast recording, and I’m excited to do it again soon. I’m looking forward to releasing more music and videos soon, as it’s been pretty fulfilling so far.” Leroy From the North at Pappy and Harriet’s August 15th All Ages/FREE/8pm

Creep Yourself Out with Horror Tale “Us” Before he became a screenwriter/director, Jordan Peele did comedy with Keegan Michael Key. In fact, they recently worked together voicing two plush toys, Ducky and Bunny, in Disney Pixar’s “Toy Story 4.” Now Peele’s career path has veered from comedy to writing and directing. In 2017 his first movie “Get Out” was well-received by critics. Now he has created his second film “Us,” a modern horror story starring Lupita Nyong’o in a dual role. “Us” was popular with critics, receiving a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, “Us” only scored 62 percent with general audiences in the survey. It certainly won’t be your cup of tea if you can’t handle seeing a family terrorized by creepy characters that look just like them. So be forewarned. Before the story starts, we are informed that there are thousands of miles of empty tunnels, mine shafts and abandoned train routes lying unseen beneath the
United States. As we watch the film, that statement could serve as a metaphor for what lies hidden inside each of us, just below the surface. After that onscreen statement, the film begins in 1986 as a little girl wanders past a carnival boardwalk and into a dark, sinister-looking hall of mirrors. What happens next truly frightens her. Then the narrative cuts to the present. That little girl is now married, with two children of her own. Her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) is all excited about a vacation he has planned for the family which will take them back to the same beach area in Santa Cruz where she had that uncomfortable experience as a child. She is reluctant, but eventually, she agrees to go. On the beach, they relax with friends who have a summer cottage adjacent to theirs. So far so good, but things change at night when Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) notices a group of four shadowy individuals lurking just outside their cottage entrance.
When her husband confronts them, they start slowly walking toward him. At this point, he quickly goes back inside and locks the doors against them. But can he keep the intruders out and away from his family? When the sinister group finally breaks into their beach cottage, they look exactly like them--only creepy. They are dressed all in red and have long scissors that they use as weapons. Who are
these terrible duplicates? And what do they want? Screenwriter Peele was inspired by many segments from other horror films like “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and TV’s “The Twilight Zone.” He then meshed these ideas into a concoction all his own, designed to freak you out. “Us,” rated R for violence/terror and language, has a running time of 1
hour, 56 minutes. Do not bring your young children to see this movie! The newly released DVD of “Us” is filled with featurettes where writer/director Jordan Peele, cast and crew discuss the film, giving us their insights on the story and its underlying meanings. They also explain how the four main characters were able to appear on screen simultaneously with their creepy doppelgangers.
The Laguna Beach Pageant of the Masters takes time to the stage

Vinci’s 500 years struck a chord with the audience who may or may not have been aware of celebrations throughout the world honoring this “Italian Renaissance master” and his dramatic influence spanning generations. A smart reminder was the hyper-real environment “special effects” this year such as a spectacular UFO hovering to our left poised in the sky to either planning to land or take off! This season’s theme, “The Time Machine” was inspired by English science fiction writer, H.G. Wells first novel published in 1895, The Time Machine and Leonardo Da
Vinci’s legacy, celebrating his life and work which has made its way to museums worldwide including the installation of his masterpiece, The Last Supper at the Vatican in Italy. During the Pageants 90-minute performance the audience was quietly mesmerized by stunning “living pictures” capturing the drama and spirit of historical benchmarks, from a monument of Nicola Tesla to a poster of the science fiction movies, The Time Machine produced by MGM in 1960. California’s New Roadmap to Tackle Uptick in Disaster

right around the corner,” said Gov. Newsom. “An effective emergency response and preparedness system must integrate all parts of the community. Adopting smart approaches now will boost resiliency and ready communities, especially our vulnerable populations.” Building upon publicsector investments like the $50 million California For All Emergency Preparedness Campaign that advances a people-centered approach to promote readiness among diverse and socially vulnerable populations, the report identifies gaps before, during and after disaster and shows that with a rise in number and scale of disaster there is an increasing need for cross-sector response and recovery solutions. The research found that most communities don’t fully understand local resources or effectively involve nonprofits, faith and community-based organizations and the private sector. Specifically, individuals and organizations are frequently unprepared for the disaster; insufficient local-level coordination leads to wasted resources, unplanned donations and volunteer actions get in the way of emergency response and critical community needs aren’t always addressed. “When a disaster happens, all Californians want to respond. It’s our nature of giving, but it also presents challenges,” said California Chief Service Officer Karen Baker. “With so many different sectors and organizations that have their own interests, priorities, and circumstances, our report offers opportunities to address major gaps and align, connect and maximize the many sectors and entities that stand ready to act before, during and after a disaster.” “Natural disasters increasingly threaten California’s safety and prosperity, most painfully affecting those who are already struggling economically,” said Don Howard, President and CEO of The James Irvine Foundation, which supported the creation of the roadmap report based on two crosssector workshops and a review of over 70 FEMA and state planning documents and reports. “Philanthropy is a partner in building resilient communities, including by investing in research, data, and creative solutions for responding to and preventing future disasters.” Stepping up to lead one of the six strategies is Philanthropy California – an alliance of Northern California, Southern California, and San Diego Grantmakers

Woke words: PC bastion Berkeley adopts gender-neutral city code
By Desert Star Staff In the latest politically correct escalation of the ongoing culture war in the US, Berkeley City Council voted unanimously to remove gender-specific words and phrases from its municipal code on Tuesday. “Language has power. The words we use are important,” 23-year-old council member Rigel Robinson, author of the proposed changes, said. “It’s not only timely but necessary
to make sure that our laws speak for everyone.” As part of the politically correct purge of offending, gendered language within the city’s municipal code, a “manhole” will now become “maintenance hole,” “craftsmen” are now “artisans,” “heirs” are “beneficiaries,” and “manpower” will now be classified as “human effort.” Over two dozen commonly used expressions will be
changed under the new guidelines, which will replace the previous municipal code that predominantly used “he” (which has now been replaced with “they”). The ordinance does not yet include a timeline for compliance, or any penalties for failure to comply, though the council will hold a second reading next Tuesday. The cost of the changes is reportedly $600. “If it makes the city
happy, I guess they can go ahead. They can change it to a maintenance hole. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt anybody,” said Erin Davis of Berkley. “Gender-neutral language creates a lot of room to acknowledge that it’s not just men running the country,” said Robinson, who submitted the proposal back in March. As expected, many online bemoaned the perceived waste of time and city resources.
Some described the move as “equal measures childish, pompous, prudish, self-righteous, narcissistic, and insane,” while others argued that city hall must have “a lot of spare time on their hands dreaming up ways to be politically correct.” Others still couldn’t resist a bit of mockery and tonguein-cheek wordplay, proposing that “Poker is now known as Pokit. Liquor is now Liqthem. Hershey is now Themthey.”
