44 killed, 239 injured as blasts rock Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport By Desert Star Staff 44 people have been killed and 239 injured in three blasts that rocked Istanbul’s Ataturk airport, according to Turkish officials. Foreigners could be among the dead. The blasts occurred in the airport’s international arrivals terminal. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim confirmed to the media that the death toll from the attacks has risen to 36, adding
that foreigners could be among the victims. Five of those killed in the attacks were officers. Another 147 people were injured in the blasts, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said. Yildirim also stated that the attackers arrived at the airport by taxi and that initial findings point to Islamic State responsibility (IS, previously ISIS/ISIL) for the attacks. “It showed once again
that terrorism is a global threat and defeating it requires global cooperation. All early indications suggest that the IS was behind the atrocity, but the investigation is ongoing,” the Prime Minister said. The attacks on the airport involved three suicide bombers, according to Yildirim. Investigation revealed that all three opened fire before detonating their explosive devices.
By Carlos Herrera COACHELLA VALLEY - Fireworks stands open for business in several cities in the Coachella Valley. While the skies will be lit up red, white and blue this Fourth of July, there are some safety tips you need to keep in mind. It is that time of year again, Fourth of July is right around the corner and the skies will be lit up to celebrate Independence Day. “It kind of gives a spark to the whole day,” Cathedral City resident Natalia Medina said. Fireworks stands opened for business in several cities in the Coachella Valley in preparation of the big day. For the rest of the week you’ll
see fireworks stands like this one in cities that allow it. However, in most cities, the pyrotechnics are illegal. In fact, safe and sane fireworks are only legal in the cities of Blythe, Coachella, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs and Indio. The reason for that, according to fire officials, is because they are dangerous. “Safe and sane fireworks have the potential to cause serious burns and can cause fires,” battalion chief for Cal Fire Rick Griggs said. Fire officials say you should only use safe and sane fireworks, but even those can be dangerous, so they must be used properly. “They all can be dangerous and not only burn people but burn
property and cause significant damage,” Griggs added. Here are some other tips: • Make sure you keep a bucket of water on hand • Keep children at a safe distance • Don’t ignite fireworks close to anything flammable Officials also want to remind you that if you do not follow the law, you will face the consequences, such as a citation, go to jail or, what is even worse, injure yourself or someone else. “Even the simplest sparklers go off at several thousand degrees, so that can cause burns and those burns don’t just go away, they can be lifetime scars,” Griggs said. On Tuesday evening, three suicide bombers stormed the airport with assault weapons and opened fire before blowing themselves up. One of the attackers fired shots from an automatic rifle in the departures hall, according to Reuters. All three reportedly detonated their explosive devices around the arrivals hall. Four armed men were reportedly seen running away from the terminal building after
the explosions, according to Turkey’s NTV channel. According to some Turkish media, the blasts targeted two separate locations in the airport. The deadly blasts coincided with the second anniversary of the declaration of the socalled Caliphate by the terror group as well as the last week of the holy month of Ramadan, during which IS Continues on Page 7

E N T E RTA I N M E N T Walt Disney: He Built His Kingdom on A Mouse BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Children from Anaheim to Zanzibar are familiar with Walt Disney’s animated characters— and the magic began many years ago when Walt created a little mouse named Mickey. According to legend, the idea for Mickey was based on an actual pet mouse Disney kept in his Kansas City studio. The little fellow was one of a large family of field mice Walt had discovered in his wastepaper basket. Though the mice were housed in cages to keep them out of mischief,

the clever little “Mortimer” was allowed to scamper on Walt’s drawing board. In fact, Disney trained the little guy to stay within a drawn circle, tapping the bright mouse lightly on the nose whenever he started to scamper across the pencil lines. As for Mickey’s birth, well, it’s a remarkable part of animation history. He first appeared on screen at the Colony Theatre in Manhattan on November 18, 1928. But he wasn’t the same wellmannered mouse we know today. In the early days, Mickey was rambunctious. But unlike other animated animals of his era, Mickey started his career with a distinct personality and a voice of his own. Walt had the talented Ubbe “Ub” Iwerks do the first animated drawings for Mickey, and for nearly a quarter of a century, Walt himself was Mickey’s voice. And lucky for Mickey—before he made his screen debut Walt’s wife Lilian told Walt she thought “Mortimer” was too stuffy a moniker for such a playful rodent, suggesting he call him Mickey instead. Upon release, “Steamboat Willie,” the first all-talking cartoon featuring the newly created Mickey Mouse, took the nation by storm. Disney’s “Silly Symphonies” were next in the studio’s parade of progress. Animated in full color, they too featured
sound. Timeless stories like “The Tortoise and the Hare” and, “The Grasshopper and the Ant” followed. All have endured, remaining witty and fresh despite the passage of time. And with the success of Mickey and the popularity of “The Silly Symphonies” series, Disney decided to take the art of animation to even greater heights. Always a pioneer, Walt decided to make a full-
length animated feature. His choice was a Grimm’s fairy tale, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” By spring 1936, “Snow White” was in production. The film
cost nearly $1.5 million, a princely amount in those days. “Snow White” was quite a success, and in 1938 child star Shirley Temple presented Walt Disney with a special Academy Award, incorporating one large and seven little Oscars to honor

his masterpiece. Though many Oscars have been awarded to the Disney Studios since then, it wasn’t until 1991 that an
animated film, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” was nominated as one of the five best pictures of the year. Once again, Disney’s Studio made animated history. In the lavishly illustrated work “The Art of Walt Disney From Mickey Mouse to the Magic Kingdom,” author Christopher Finch describes
Walt Disney as “a man who believed absolutely in his own instincts and abilities, an artist who would go to any length to ensure a project was carried out exactly as he had conceived it. He surrounded himself with talent, but at all times the master plan was in Walt Disney’s head.” Walt Disney left us on December 15, 1966. He died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, directly across from the Disney Studios that he founded. To fully examine Disney’s legacy, check out the twopart, four-hour film “Walt Disney: He Made Believe.” This AMERICAN EXPERIENCE film, which aired on PBS and is now available on DVD, examines Walt Disney’s complex life and continuing legacy. This highly entertaining and informative film features rare archival footage from the Disney vaults as well as interviews with biographers, historians, animators and designers who helped turn Walt’s dreams into reality. Shortly after Walt left his Magic Kingdom for an Eternal Kingdom, his studio foundered. Fortunately when his nephew Roy E. Disney took over the studio’s classic animation was once again a top priority. Since then, the imagineering at the Walt Disney Studios has continued to flourish. It’s hard to believe that Walt Disney has been gone for 51 years, because his magical formula for family entertainment lives on in the 21st century. His fantastic realms of Disneyland, Disney World, and Epcot continue to evolve and flourish. In fact, his magical kingdoms have spread to other world cities like Paris and most recently Shanghai. Disney Studios also continue to create family-friendly film blockbusters like “Frozen” and the hilarious “Zootopia” which are both billion-dollar ‘Disney Babies.’

Police Cracking Down on Drunk Driving During Fourth of July Weekend By KMIR News Staff COACHELLA VALLEY -With the Fourth of July being one of the most heavily traveled holidays of the year, cops are urging caution when driving to or from your destination. “Don’t even think about drinking and driving this Fourth of July,” Chief Dale Mondary said, of the Desert Hot Springs Police Department (DHSPD). “We will be actively looking for you. The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign means zero tolerance for drunk driving -- no excuses.” DHSPD will be out in full force, diligently looking for people driving drunk, hoping
to prevent any dangers to other drivers. In addition to the routine staffing, extra officers will be on the DUI Saturation Patrols over the holiday weekend. The consequences of drinking and driving are serious. A drunk driver not only puts their lives in danger but everyone’s around them as well. A DUI arrest can include going to jail, suspension of your driver’s license and paying a ticket up to $10,000 or more. DHSPD are recommending alternatives to drinking and driving such as: -Plan a safe way home before heading out to celebrate
-Plan a designated driver if you know you’ll be drinking -DDVIP: The California Office of Traffic Safety DDVIP mobile app is available for free download on iOS and Android devices. The DDVIP app allows users to “Map a Spot” with their current location. Among other options, you can also order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb. DHSPD will not be tolerating any drunk driving and are encouraging people to be smart and safe this holiday. If you see someone trying to drive drunk, take their keys and help them make other arrangements. Source KMIR

Supreme Court makes major rulings
By Desert Star Staff The US Supreme Court has struck down abortion restrictions in Texas, ruled that domestic violence misdemeanor convictions are valid grounds to lose gun ownership rights, and raised the bar for prosecuting public officials on corruption charges. In the Texas abortion law case, known as Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, the Court threw out a previous ruling by an appellate court in a 5-3 decision. Justices Breyer, Kennedy, Ginsburg, Sotomayor and Kagan were in the majority, while Thomas, Alito and Roberts dissented.
The Texas law, known as HB2, required abortion providers to have admitting privileges at local hospitals and facilities similar to surgical outpatient centers. While the state said that the requirements were necessary to protect women’s health, abortion right groups argued that the law was crafted to make it more difficult for women in Texas to obtain abortions. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton immediately hailed the decision. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also praised the ruling as a “victory for women.”
“Today, the Supreme Court reaffirmed that the Constitution protects not just the theoretical right to abortion, but the right of a woman to actually get one without unwarranted interference from politicians,” said Jennifer Dalven, director of the Reproductive Freedom Project at the ACLU. The Texas law’s restrictions “harm women’s health and place an unconstitutional obstacle in the path of a woman’s reproductive freedom,” President Barack Obama said in a statement praising the Supreme Court ruling. Former Texas state
Senator Wendy Davis, who famously filibustered against the law in 2013, said that today made it “all worth it.” The Republican Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), on the other hand, said he was “disappointed in the Court’s decision” and that the GOP will continue to “fight to protect women’s health and promote life.” Justice Clarence Thomas was the only member of the court who would have upheld the Texas statute outright. Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito, two other conservative-leaning members of the Court, said that they favored more analysis, according to SCOTUSblog. The Court also ruled against two plaintiffs in Voisine v. United States, a case with implications for gun ownership rights. Stephen Voisine and William Armstrong had argued that a federal law that barred them from owning firearms because of misdemeanor domestic violence convictions violated their constitutional rights. In a 6-2 ruling, the court upheld the opinion that domestic violence convictions can result in gun ownership restrictions, even if the misdemeanor is only the result of recklessness rather than intent. By Desert Star Staff An African-American woman nearing her 100th birthday could be evicted from her apartment in San Francisco over legal fees. This time the fight isn’t with a real estate developer, but with her neighbors who want to convert her apartment into a condo. Iris Canada, 99, has lived in her home for more than half a century, but she is facing eviction over $164,000 in legal fees that were accrued during a fight in housing court over a previous eviction notice. She won that case. Demonstrators came out
to support the retired nurse on Monday night, at a time when affordable housing in San Francisco is fast disappearing. The issue for Canada is that the owners of the sixunit building on Page Street where she lives want to convert her apartment into a condominium. Over a decade ago, they formed a tenancy in common, a form of concurrent ownership in which two or more people possess the property simultaneously, while the apartments can still be sold off individually. Canada was promised that she could keep her apartment for the rest of
her life, for $700 a month. She has continued to live there, despite having a mild stroke some months ago, and so the owners of her apartment cannot sell it. “I love living in San Francisco,” Canada told the San Francisco Chronicle in April. “San Francisco is my home, and my home is my home. I don’t want to go anyplace.” The co-owners say Canada had left the apartment and, thus, forfeited that right, but her great niece, Iris Merriouns, told ABC News, “She went on hiatus with my mother, and she traveled, and at times she was hospitalized.” Co-owner Peter Owens said he and other residents want Canada to sign paperwork that would allow them to convert the joint ownership apartments to condos. “She is holding the entire building economic hostage because nobody can buy and sell their unit,” he said. Iris, who has refused to sign thus far, won her fight to stay in her apartment, but the court ordered Canada to pay Owens $164,000 in legal fees, which he says he is willing to waive if Iris signs
the condo paperwork. “Iris Canada asked for more time to understand the condo conversion documents,” Merriouns said. To that, Owens says, “I am completely supportive of giving her as much time as she needs.” Without Iris’ signature, her family believes she will still be evicted if she does not pay the legal fees. “He says that he wants to see my aunt to stay in her

House committee blasts Obama admin and Clinton in Benghazi report
By Desert Star Staff House Republicans have released their committee’s investigation into the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans. The report says the Obama administration dragged its feet for political reasons instead of properly responding. The Benghazi Select Committee released its report on Tuesday morning, shedding new light on the inadequate response of the US government in the face a rapidly deteriorating security situation ahead of the September 11, 2012 attacks that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three of his colleagues. Democrats, many of whom opposed even creating the investigatory committee, have maintained that no military forces could have possibly responded in time about an imminent attack on the diplomatic consulate. Hillary Clinton, who is at the center of the controversy due to serving as secretary of state at the time, had told the committee last year that there was no intelligence that indicated a planned attack.
The 802-page report, however, says that there was early intelligence indicating that the Americans in Benghazi were not safe with only two security guards, and that the Clinton and a top aide, Patrick Kennedy, should have realized this. “Despite President Obama and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta’s clear orders to deploy military assets, nothing was sent to Benghazi, and nothing was en route to Libya at the time the last two Americans were killed almost 8 hours after the attacks began,” the report says. While the Defense Department ordered military assets to deploy to the consulate, the report says that conflicting orders from the State Department about whether the forces should wear military or civilian attire delayed any such deployment. “During the course of three hours, [a commander] and his Marines changed in and out of their uniforms four times,” the report said. In another section, the report appeared to claim that the US government didn’t even know who its allies in Libya

called for increased attacks. Many people caught in the blasts and near the airport posted photos and videos from the scene, showing the destruction caused by the explosions as well as people hiding in various places in search of safety. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a statement strongly condemning the attack. Earlier, Reuters already reported that two suicide bombers blew themselves

It notes that while early reports found that 35 Americans saved from the compound by a “quasigovernmental militia” that was officially friendly to the US, they were actually rescued by the “Libyan Military Intelligence,” a group of military officers loyal to the Gaddafi regime that the US toppled a year earlier. “In other words, some of the very individuals the United States helped remove from power during the Libyan revolution were the only Libyans that came to the

assistance of the United States on the night of the Benghazi attacks,” the report states. Reps. Mike Pompeo (R-Kansas) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), more conservative members of the committee, wrote a 48-page addendum to the latest report that was more critical of Clinton. “What we did find was a tragic failure of leadership – in the run-up to the attack and the night of – a and an administration that, so blinded by politics and its desire to win an election, disregarded a basic duty of government: Tell the people the truth,” the report said. “And for those reasons, Benghazi is and always will be, an American tragedy.” The majority report comes a day after the committee’s Democratic minority released a report of their own, criticizing the committee as wasteful, and said that the Defense Department “could not have done anything differently” to prevent the attack from occurring. The Democrats’ report admits that the State Department had “woefully inadequate” security at the Benghazi compound, but defended Clinton, saying that she “never personally denied any requests for additional security.”
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-South Carolina), who served as chairman of the committee, denied accusations that the probe targeted Clinton, saying at a Tuesday press conference that the Republican majority’s report contains less mentions of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee than the one released by Democrats. “Now, I simply ask the American people to read this report for themselves, look at the evidence we have collected, and reach their own conclusions,” Gowdy said in a statement. “You can read this report in less time than our fellow citizens were taking fire and fighting for their lives on the rooftops and in the streets of Benghazi.” Clinton spoke spoke about the report at a press conference later on Tuesday, claiming that the new report has found nothing to contradict any of earlier investigations. “I want us to stay focused on the important work of diplomacy and development,” Clinton said. “That’s especially true in dangerous places. We cannot withdraw or retreat from the world. America needs a presence.” “I’ll leave it to others to characterize this report, but it’s pretty clear that it’s time to move on,” she added.
T H E AT R E “Big Sky” - Which Could be Subtitled “Big Lies” on Stage BY BEVERLY COHN
In case you might be wondering about the meaning of the title of Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros’ dramedy* “Big Sky,” an immediate thought could come to mind. Maybe it’s the expansive view from the exquisite Ritz Carlton condominium setting for this play, which is in the swanky ski-country of Aspen, Colorado? Skydiving perhaps? Long plane trip? You would have guessed wrong and the meaning will be revealed later. What we do know for sure from the opening scene is that Jack (Jon Tenney) and his wife Jen (Jennifer Westfeldt) are being hosted by the Pederson Fund, a potential employer, and have been ensconced in this magnificent chalet beautifully designed by Derek McLane. Falling light snow can be seen through the large windows. An unseen window is a panoramic view of the bucolic mountains. Jen is the first to come in from the cold and immediately glues herself to her cell phone which signals incoming text messages. This continues throughout most of Act 1. She has a big secret. Jack arrives and is delighted at the prospects of working for this big company. He is a Type A personality – outgoing and aggressive. He was let go from his last job and really needs this new situation to bolster both his ego and bank account. He, too, has a secret. Jack breaks open a box containing $400 bottles of wine, compliments of his hosts and pours two glasses of wine. In a funny piece of business, he samples different chocolates, taking a small bite and then putting them back into the box. He makes an awkward attempt at initiating lovemaking by putting his hand on his wife’s breasts but is quickly rebuffed as his she recoils almost in horror. Jen
calls it unromantic to which Jack replies: “I put my hand on your chest and hope for the best.” So, it quickly becomes evident that this bucolic setting is in sharp contrast to their 18-year marriage, which seems to be coming apart at the proverbial seams. Lots of drinking ensues with Jen constantly reverting back to her cell phone to check the text messages, which are coming in at a rapid rate. Who are all these texts coming from? In what is probably a symbolic gesture, Jen keeps forgetting to buy groceries so the chalet-designed condo is as barren as her marriage. Jen’s close friend and confidant is her gay buddy Jonathan (Arnie Burton.) He has been invited to join the family for the weekend and is the voice of reason, for the most part, that is. He is overwrought when Jen reveals that she is having an affair and tries to persuade her that it’s just a passing fancy since her lover is a patient in hospice where she volunteers. That said, could a miracle be afoot? Arnie Burton gives a wonderful performance as the wisecracking Jonathan. He breathes comedic life into the proceedings, and is a master of the hilarious “slow take.” Despite his let’s party demeanor, he is still grieving over the death of his partner from cancer and uses medical marijuana to assuage his despair. He is also apprehensive about Jack’s commitment to invest in his pillow company. Jonathan has brought his stash which will change the outcome of everyone’s lives, but that’s all I’ll say about that. Rounding out this troubled family is Jen and Jack’s 17-old daughter Tessa, an outspoken rather rude young lady who is not blind to the
negative dynamic between her parents. She too has a secret, which she shares with poor Jonathan who is on the verge of confessional overload and probably wishes he could shout TMI, TMI! ** She is rebellious and reveals that she is in love with Catoni, a 20-year-old Native-American porter who works in their New York apartment building. She is an A student but has decided that instead of going to college, she is going to take a spiritual road trip across the country with her boyfriend. Oh yes. I should share with you that Catoni means big sky, hence the title. At one point, Tessa convinces Arnie to let her have a hit of his joint which at first he refuses, but she wears him down and gets to take a couple of drags. Gersten-Vassilaros sprinkled in comic lines throughout Act 1 such as Arnie to Tessa: “You’re too young to feel anxious.” Tessa: “Young is the new old.” When he’s not looking, she grabs the bag, puts it in her purse and, at the insistence of her father, rushes off to meet with the daughter of the gentleman from Pederson Fund who is in the process

of crafting a final employment offer. This deed definitely does not go unpunished and involves a buffalo. That’s all I’m going to say about that. Following the playwright’s Act I text, director John Rando keeps the action moving nicely elevating the proceedings slightly above a sit-com. Rapid-fire jokes are executed in a timely manner but we never really get much below the surface. Act II, however, is an entirely different play, and could best be described as a blood bath of accusations and incriminations. Technically, one must wonder why almost three-quarters of Act II is performed in very low lighting making it difficult to actually see the action unfolding on stage. Yes. I know there is a power outage, but some directorial license could have been employed to compensate for the lost electricity. The production values are top notch including Costume Design by Denitsa Bliznakova, Lighting Design by Jaymi Lee Smith, and Jon Gottlieb’s wonderful Sound Design including the blizzard’s howling wind which might make you
reach for your sweater. As far as performances, Tenney does a believable job as Jack, a macho man sinking deeper and deeper into a pit. Robinson’s Tessa is a just a bit “Hollywood” and tries too much to go for the laughs. Despite that, she does having some believable moments. Westfeldt as Jen gives the weakest performance. She wines her way through the dialogue, delivering the lines in a singsongy, monotonous tone, making her vocal performance stilted and quite tedious. * Dramedy: A comedy and drama **TMI: Too much information Gil Cates Theater The Geffen Playhouse 10886 Le Conte Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90024 Run: Tuesday Friday: 8:00pm Saturday: 3:00pm: & 8:00pm Sunday: 2:00pm: & 7:00pm Closing: Sunday, July 17, 2016 Tickets: $32-$82 310.208.5454 or www.geffenplayhouse.com
