Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia Reiterates Sense of Urgency as Governor Asks Imperial County to Reinstate Stay-At-Home Orders By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, CA Today, Governor Newsom has asked the County of Imperial to reinstitute their stay-at-home orders. This announcement comes after the California Department of Public Health’s active coordination with County officials and the close monitoring of the County’s increasing coronavirus (COVID-19) positivity rate as

well as hospital and testing capacity. Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) has issued the following statement in response: “The situation in Imperial County is alarming, and we need to be doing a lot more to address the sustained surge of COVID-19 cases. These stakes come at a high human cost. We need to get everyone on board and ramp up our

mitigation efforts, medical capacity, as well as overall community awareness of the importance of testing and adhering to personal safety measures. We all must do our part to save lives. Staying home is certainly one of the most effective ways of keeping each other safe and slowing the spread of COVID-19.” “I am grateful to the Governor and our California

Department of Public Health for their active coordination with the County of Imperial thus far, they have been very responsive to our concerns, and have committed to continue to provide us with additional resources to support our region’s emerging needs.” “We must act with a sense of urgency. While Imperial County is currently being asked to take a step back,

Historical Pain Behind Mount Rushmore Renewed in 2020

The land on which Mount Rushmore is located was taken from the Lakota Sioux by the U.S. government in the 1800s. (Adobe Stock) By Desert Star Staff KEYSTONE, S.D. -President Donald Trump plans to hold a rally at Mount Rushmore later this week for Independence Day.

But a number of Native American tribes say they’ll protest, given the complex history behind some of the monument’s figures. Statues and monuments

deemed historically insensitive have been toppled across the country in the renewed racial justice movement. Tribal leaders in South Dakota say they’ve been

speaking out about Mount Rushmore for decades, because to them, it represents the land that was stolen from them and the genocide committed against their people. Chase Iron Eyes, spokesman for the Oglala Sioux, says his tribe’s longstanding pain coincides with the current national reckoning. “When we have these monuments and the United States wants to shove those identities into our mainframes, of course, natural human beings are going to think for themselves,” he states. One of the main points of contention is that Mount Rushmore sits on the Black Hills, considered sacred land that was seized despite tribal treaties with the U.S. government. The president’s visit is also raising concerns among wildfire experts because of

planned fireworks, which could spark fires due to dry weather. While Native Americans are upset over the site being used as a backdrop for the president, Iron Eyes says he doesn’t care which political party holds power -- so long as the government and the white population make a serious attempt to make amends with indigenous people. “We’ve been living side-byside with them, intermarrying with them,” Iron Eyes states. “They own half of our reservations. They own most of the businesses around here. We’re already living in peace around here, but it’s a peace with a boot on our neck.” Some activists say the land on which Mount Rushmore sits should be returned to the tribes, while others say the monument should be demolished. There also are calls to return the revenue it has produced.

Study: COVID-19 Could Increase Heat Deaths Among AZ Seniors By Desert Star Staff PHOENIX -- New research finds while Arizona’s blazing summer heat already is dangerous for seniors, COVID-19 could increase those hazards as older folks are encouraged to be especially careful to avoid potential infection. Public health officials, who note that three-quarters of Arizonans who have died from coronavirus were age 65 and older, have warned seniors to stay at home and limit contact with others. But AARP Arizona assistant director Steve Jennings said it’s important for family members or other social networks to regularly check on seniors to make sure sheltering at home doesn’t ultimately lead to tragedy. “This COVID situation has thrown this whole thing into a whole other level of danger for older people, especially when the authorities are urging you to stay home,” Jennings said. “And, you know, who is it that knows

that you’re OK in there?” A new report by Climate Central, a collaboration between scientists and journalists, found seniors who live alone are the most likely to die from excessive heat, and 40% of Arizona’s almost 200 heat-related deaths in 2019 occurred indoors. Jennings said it is critical for families, neighborhood associations and community groups to locate and regularly check on older neighbors, adding that research has found Arizona seniors who live in mobile or manufactured homes are especially vulnerable to excessive heat. “If there are individuals living alone, they need to be checked on repeatedly,” he said. “[If] there is an old guy living in a house here and nobody sees them very much, the lawn isn’t cut and the mail isn’t always collected, that’s a high level of risk going on with that person.” University of Washington climate researcher Kristie

The number of days in Arizona with extreme heat - at or above 110 degrees - was 24 in 2019, up by more than 60% since the 1970s. (Nate Hovee/Adobe Stock) Ebi co-authored the report. She said the study found many seniors have neither the physical nor financial wherewithal to cope with extreme temperatures. “The growing heat is compounded by the fact that populations are getting older.

We’ve got more people with various chronic diseases,” Ebi said. “So, we’re looking at a period where these two trends are going to come together in ways that, unless actions are taken, the number of deaths will go up.” Regularly updated data

$3.9 million grant will fund downtown Coachella improvement projects

By Desert Star Staff COACHELLA, Calif.– The City of Coachella was awarded a $3.9 million grant from the California Department of Housing and Community Development that will be used for traffic and landscaping improvements in the downtown Pueblo Viejo neighborhood. The funding through the state’s Infill Infrastructure Grant Program will be used for projects east of Cesar Chavez Street, including streetscape upgrades along Sixth Street,

pedestrian and bicycle paths at the western end of Fifth Street, a new road to connect a transit hub to Cesar Chavez and Fourth Streets, and a new traffic signal at Sixth Street and Grapefruit Boulevard. “This grant will help us enhance our community without burdening residents with additional taxes,” said Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez. “We will see safety improvements with the new traffic signal, keep people connected through a

new transit hub, offer options to stay healthy with walking and biking paths and provide much-needed shade for people visiting Etherea and other areas downtown. This is a real win for Coachella, and I would like to thank Assemblymember Garcia for his assistance.” “The impact of this project will reach across the Eastern Coachella Valley,” said California Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, (D) 56th District. “The new transit hub will offer improved access and

comfort for those traveling to Coachella and beyond.” The items funded through this grant will complement two significant projects within the downtown Pueblo Viejo area. The Grapefruit Boulevard Urban Greening and Connectivity Project will add shading and drainage improvements along Grapefruit Boulevard between Leoco Lane and Ninth Street. The project is funded through a previously awarded $3.2 million state grant, and construction

is expected to begin this fall. The Pueblo Viejo Villas and Transit Hub Project is a mixeduse development along Cesar Chavez Street between Fourth and Sixth streets. It includes 105 units of affordable housing, retail space and a SunLine transit hub. The $52 million project is a partnership of the City of Coachella, SunLine and Chelsea Development. Construction is expected to begin later this summer.

By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE - Many men believe they’re less vulnerable to COVID-19, and that has consequences for how safe they really are during the pandemic. A new survey conducted in the U.S. and U.K. finds women are more likely to wear face masks than men. Family medicine physician Dr. Scott Itano with Kaiser Permanente Washington says the issue is what he calls “toxic masculinity” - viewing manliness through a traditional lens in which men have to be brave and self-reliant at all times. “They’re less likely to

be vulnerable or show signs of weakness,” says Itano. “And I think wearing masks and seeking care from a doctor, to them, feels like showing a sign of weakness or being vulnerable.” Unfortunately, he says, this mind-set could come at a high cost. According to Washington State Department of Health data, 54% of COVID-19-related deaths have been men. Starting today, face masks are required in public in Washington. Itano says people don’t just put themselves at risk when they don’t follow proper precautions to avoid novel

coronavirus exposure - they risk other people’s lives, too. “Even though a person might be a young, healthy 35-year-old man,,” says Itano, “he could have grandparents or loved ones, or friends who are immunocompromised or at high risk for complications.” Itano says men’s COVID-19 attitudes extend to how they manage their health in other ways. He says it’s often difficult to get men to come in for check-ups. He suggests they seek out the right doctor for them. “Ask your buddies who they go to for their medical care and check bios online,”

says Itano. “Most systems and doctors have online profiles, where you can read about them and find someone you think you might get along with.” He adds it isn’t helpful to be confrontational about COVID-19 or self-care in general. Itano usually thanks his male patients for making the effort to come in and see him. The Myths about Mold, Like Mold, Just Won’t Die [Part 2]

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. You cannot handle it yourself. Many mold consultants treat mold as if it were asbestos. Asbestos is truly dangerous. Unlike mold, when inhaled into the lungs, the body cannot absorb or break down asbestos. But mold consultants typically develop repair protocols which are virtually identical to asbestos protocols. Several trade organizations have created mold credentials and extensive (and expensive) cleanup protocols for mold consultants to use. On the other hand, the EPA’s recommendation to clean up a moldy area of up to 10 square feet is to wipe it with a cloth dampened with a diluted bleach solution. For more information, visit https://www.epa.gov/mold/ mold-cleanup-your-home or the mold Frequently Asked Questions at www.cdph.ca.gov. The EPA and California Department of Public Health always recommend mold consultants. They do not, but do recommend that minor mold situations be handled by the resident or janitorial staff. Mold consultants are licensed. Mold inspectors or consultants are not licensed

in California. A few states require a license to perform mold remediation work. Most mold consultant and mold remediation companies instead hold credentials and memberships in trade organizations that promote the interests of the mold inspection industry. Mold cannot be caused by the resident. Mold accumulation can often be caused or worsened by inadequately ventilated living space. Mold can build up in stuffy bathrooms or any area where the environment is humid, warm and poorly ventilated. Before the mold scare started in 2000, with the new term “toxic mold,” residents would clean up mold in shower or bath enclosures and would simply wipe it off with a cleaning solution. Insurance never covers mold. Partially true: Delayed discovery and drying of water leakage can result in mold and dry rot, not normally covered by property insurance. Although the property insurance will normally refuse to cover the cost of mold remediation, it will still typically cover the other water damage. However, if the property owner is sued because of water damage including mold, the liability part of the policy ordinarily will defend July 1, 2020

the claim and sometimes even pay for mold cleanup. Let the emergency contractor do everything. Because of the fear associated with mold, the normal reaction is to call emergency service contractors. Such contractors are expensive because of their readiness to respond almost immediately at any hour. Stopping water leakage and drying the space might require an emergency contractor but sometimes a plumber or handyman might be enough. Emergency contractors sometimes destroy walls and cabinets before anyone can obtain a second opinion as to its necessity. Allow demolition only of what is immediately necessary, and then seek bids for the remaining work. It’s important to look inside the walls. Concerned residents often ask to open walls to look for mold, but this is almost always unnecessary. If it is inside the wall, it may not be affecting

anyone, and opening the wall may actually disturb mold and release it into the air). Mold incidents always cost over $10,000. The cost of repairing water damage skyrockets due to unnecessary mold tests, unnecessary consultants, delay in leak repair and drying (the most common cause of mold buildup), excessive demolition, unnecessary mold hunts, and overuse of emergency contractors, and foregoing competitive repair bids. Be more deliberate, and save money.

‘Knives Out’--A Clever Little Crime Caper

When you hear the name, Daniel Craig, linked

with a murder mystery, you automatically think-- “Bond.

James Bond.” But not this time. In the clever little murder

mystery “Knives Out,” Craig is a homespun detective called in to find the killer of best-selling mystery writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). Before his demise, Thrombey tells his playboy grandson Ransom (Chris Evans) that he and the rest of the family will all be disinherited in this new will. Instead of giving his fortune to them, he plans to leave all his money to his lovely nurse caregiver Marta (Anna de Armas). That doesn’t go over well, and shortly thereafter, Thrombey is found dead. But who done it? Was it Marta? She is so adorable, you hope that it isn’t her. Along with the police, enter Louisiana investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), who has

been hired by an unknown source to find out the killer’s identity. Alas, all fingers point to Marta, who Benoit and we soon discover is a young woman who cannot tell a lie. In fact, if and when she does, she automatically throws up. Fear not, she is relatively truthful, unlike Harlan’s greedy relatives. Jamie Lee Curtis portrays Harlan’s daughter Linda. She is married to Richard (Don Johnson), and they have a son, Ransom (Chris Evans), who is a playboy and the black sheep of the family. “Knives Out,” a Lionsgate release, is rated PG-13 for thematic content, some disturbing images, and strong language. Running time: 126 minutes.

Safety of Immigrant Construction Workers Sacrificed for Profit By Desert Star Staff The recent death of a construction worker in Minnesota has exposed a lack of safety oversight at job sites, according to a regional union. Union officials say immigrant laborers are being exploited by contractors who are not prioritizing training. Last week, a 26-yearold man died after a steep fall at a housing construction site in the Twin Cities area. Burt Johnson, general counsel for the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters, says the victim was a non-union Hispanic worker. He says subcontractors often hire workers for cash-only jobs and don’t provide proper training. “They’re disproportionately exploiting immigrant laborers,” Johnson states. “We see that commonly on construction projects, multifamily construction projects throughout Minnesota, and it’s appalling. “ While there’s no data for Minnesota, a 2018 study found

that in the U.S., non-native workers in smaller construction companies received less training than those employed by larger firms. Johnson says developers and general contractors are ignoring the hiring and training practices of smaller companies brought in for projects. He also blames the Minnesota office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for not holding contractors accountable. The office declined to comment, citing the investigation into last week’s fatality. Because of the economic collapse caused by COVID-19, there are fears that marginalized construction workers will take up more risky jobs. And Johnson says it’s not just general safety that’s a concern. Johnson says while many companies make it a point to protect skilled laborers during the crisis, workers aren’t getting extra

In addition to safety violations, wage theft has been cited as a big problem in the construction trade for immigrant workers in Minnesota. Policy leaders have been more responsive to that issue in recent years. (Adobe Stock) attention from other firms. “They’ve done so throughout the pandemic with total disregard to CDC protocols for social distancing, wearing masks,” he maintains.

Industry research says it can be hard for non-English speaking construction workers to advocate for themselves with smaller companies because of language barriers.

Collectively, these seasoned industry veterans work together to guide Hello Sister’s natural artistic talents, while they rock out their own version of “1999.” Pop Through The Decades was co-created by Hello Sister’s father Tim Mason, a former Pop R&B songwriter who charted songs on Billboard in Canada and Europe. “Since we were really little our Dad played us all types of music, so we have always been fans of different genres,” Gabriella recalled. “Our show was inspired by our real-life journey to become better musicians by playing many different kinds of music, while honoring awesome artists from the past and present.” Hello Sister Relaunches “Summertime” Song & Video: Hello Sister stays busy all the time! A Travel Shortcut, Cathedral City’s Museum Of Ancient Wonders By Pamela Price Travel, whether to Cairo, Egypt or the Old Faithful geyser In Yellowstone National Park, is currently mostly curtailed. The current changing and challenging situation due to the unpredictable COVID drama has resulted in uncertainty resulting in a drastic drop in airline reservations, unforeseen cancellations and delays impacting the cruise industry, not to mention hotel closures. Enter The Museum of Ancient Wonders (MoAW) in Cathedral City, which brings the myths and mysteries of the ancient world to the Coachella Valley from artisans of the Pharaonic Village in Egypt to an exhibit dedicated to the Faces of Africa and A Mystical View of Tribal Heritage. MoAW opened on October 26, 2019. “If you have a travel dream to visit King Tut’s mystical treasured antiquities, you don’t have to venture further than Cathedral City,” says area cultural acolyte Grace Robbins. The Museum of Ancient Wonders is located in the Cathedral Gateway Plaza,

69028-B East Palm Canyon Drive in Cathedral City. You can’t miss the MuseumMuseum (next to Big Lots) as it is just across Date Palm Drive from the Agua Caliente Casino currently under construction. MoAW was created by Alberto Acosta with Eugene Jenneman, who you meet upon entering this inimitable MuseumMuseum, which has more than meets the eye in smart, yet subtle ways. For example, you missed the legendary King Tut exhibition years back, or you simply have the yen to gaze upon Egyptian “sanctioned reproductions” such as a state chariot, royal mummy case, thrones, and golden shrines among other legendary replicas, you need not leave the Coachella Valley. “This is the ultimate ‘field trip,’” declared Robbins, who recalls the immensely popular King Tut Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh ‘World –Tour’, a historical exhibit that came to the Los Angeles Museum of Art, years ago. According to Acosta, while the 18-hour flight

each recreating history. In addition to this, the Museum entrance features 38 authentic reproductions of ancient sculptures, masks, and murals along with Mesozoic, the Age of Dinosaurs, complete with a fully-mounted Dinosaur

with evocative details such as claws and eggs representing the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Check it out at moaw.org. Inquire about the Museum’s personalized field trips, with a private guide incorporating social distancing.

She has been part of the deregulatory apparatus that is trying to take away consumer and environmental protections.” White House officials point to Beck’s experience, touting her Ph.D. in toxicology and more than 20 years of experience in risk assessment. By Desert Star Staff The German company Bayer has agreed to shell out a total of $10 million to around 95,000 plaintiffs who alleged that glyphosate, the key ingredient in its Roundup weed killer, gave them cancer. Roundup originally was developed by Monsanto in the early 1970s. Bayer bought the company in 2018. The company said these agreements

settlement, he says, is hundreds of millions of dollars going toward farmers who have been harmed by another herbicide produced by Bayer called Dicamba, as well as for water contamination caused by PCB pollution. “This is really indicative of an absolute regulatory collapse in the U.S. when it comes to dangerous pollutants like these,” he said. “And it should really be a wake-up call to the EPA.” In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer stated glyphosate probably is carcinogenic to humans.

Senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity Nathan Donley said the health concerns around glyphosate are alarming, yet the herbicide continues to be touted as safe by Bayer and the Environmental Protection Agency. “We use around 300 million pounds of it each year in the United States - and that’s just in the agricultural sector, that’s

not counting what people use in their homes,” Donley said. “Many people have seen it when they walk into their local hardware store or big-box store, it’s generally right there up front.” According to the state Department of Health and Human Services, North Carolina is home to more than 48,000 farms, and ranks 13th nationwide for use of pesticides and herbicides like July 1, 2020

Donley said the settlement does nothing to curb Roundup’s use. “It doesn’t attempt to put a warning label, for instance, on bottles of Roundup saying that it could potentially cause cancer,” he said. FAMILY FEATURES

he first thought that comes to mind when picturing grilling in the summer sun might be a perfectly cooked steak or a juicy burger, but no backyard barbecue is complete without the all-important sides and beverages that complete the meal. Whether you’re pairing a main protein with separate side dishes or going allin-one by combining tender chicken with veggies on skewers, the opportunities are endless for a crave-worthy cookout. Find more summer grilling recipes at Culinary.net.

5 Steps for Sizzling Steak

A sizzling steak is a surefire sound of summer, and the flavors achieved from one that’s perfectly grilled are hard to match. Before you fire up your grill, consider these five basics for cooking a chefworthy steak:

Prepare Your Cut

Taste preferences (and prices) may differ among sirloins, ribeyes, T-bones and more, but the way you prepare steaks likely won’t change much from cut to cut. You’ll want to trim the thickness down to 1/2-1 inch for proper cooking, and setting the meat out ahead of time allows it to warm to room temperature before hitting the grill.

Add Some Salt

Feel free to add any spices you prefer, but remember a good steak typically doesn’t require fancy seasoning – a pinch of salt works just fine. Add your salt anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours before grilling time to help retain moisture and improve flavor.

Aim for High Heat

A two-zone fire is usually the way to go – one side of the grill should be hot (using direct heat) with the other side not quite as warm (indirect heat). This allows you to create a sear over direct heat before finishing cooking through – without burning – over indirect heat.

Sear and Slide

Cooking your steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes on each side is normally about right for creating a proper sear. At this point, depending on the thickness of your steak, you’ll want to check for doneness. If it’s not quite to the temperature you’re looking to achieve, simply slide it over to the indirect heat for a finishing touch. Keep in mind these general guidelines for doneness: 120-125 F is rare, 130-135 F is medium-rare, 140-145 F is medium, 150-155 F is medium-well and 160-175 F is well done.

Let Rest

Finally, as hungry as you may be at this point, resting steaks is an important last step before diving in. Giving your steaks 5-10 minutes (foil or no foil) allows flavors to redistribute and moisture to be retained in the meat.

Anniversary edition of the album shines a well-deserved look back at the magical project. The uplifting John Hiatt-penned title track, wistful Chicago blues ballad “Ten Long Years” (showcasing King’s expressive baritone vocals), blues rocker “I Wanna Be” and swinging “Days of Old” resonant with all the power that greeted the release’s arrival two decades ago. Other standouts include a Deltaflavored cover of the William Broonzy & Charles Seger classic “Key to the Highway,” the funky “Marry You” and poignant blues gospel cut “Help the Poor.” Two additional tracks recorded during the original 1999 sessions are available for the first time; the acoustic “Rollin’ and Tumblin’ “ finds Clapton and King trading verses on the blues standard while the LP is capped with an unheard cover of Willie Dixon’s powerful “Let Me Love You Baby” featuring King in one of his most mighty vocal performances on the disc. There is a warmth and authenticity as the two long-time friends and icons share lead vocals, guitar licks, a love of the blues and musical bond across the 14 tracks. Among the famed musicians who are featured with Clapton and King are Nathan East, Doyle Bramhall II, Jim Keltner and Andy Fairweather

Low. The 14-track collection is available in all formats including a 180-gram black double vinyl package. A limited edition 180-gram blue vinyl double LP set is available exclusively in Eric Clapton’s official online store and at indie retailers. The vinyl was mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Los Angeles. Information: EricClapton.com. Artist: Bob Dylan Title: Rough and Rowdy Ways (Columbia) You might like if you enjoy: Bob Dylan, Michael Ubaldini, Bruce Springsteen Tell me more: “Rough and Rowdy Ways” is Bob Dylan’s first album of original material in eight years, and first new full-length release since he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016 “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” At 79, the legendary Duluth, Minnesota native still has plenty of important things to say. Look no further than the much-discussed “Murder Most Foul,” a track that fully chronicles the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Dylan’s fierce observations are delivered with a well-aged raspy baritone and beautifully framed

by an acoustic piano and the embellishment of strings. But to hear the 17-minute opus as only a snapshot of that tragic moment in Dallas is to miss Dylan’s ability to tap into the fears and profound sadness that greeted the nation with the murder of Kennedy, as well as a myriad of cultural and historical references that boost the poetic ride. Followers of Dylan know there is often a mystery to his enigmatic songs adorned with literary citations, and that is the case here. The blues-stamped “False Prophet” and “My Own Version of You,” vulnerable ballad “I’ve Made Up My Mind to Give Myself to You,” gorgeous “Mother of Muses” and countrified “Goodbye Jimmy Reed” are involving and thought-provoking songs in the tradition of his best work and are worth many repeated listens to be sure. Information: BobDylan.com. Artist: Rogers & Butler Title: Poets & Sinners (Zip Records) You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, Shoes, the Kinks, the Hollies Tell me more: Having issued the impressive four-song EP “Diana Dors” in early 2019, Rogers & Butler are back with their wonderful new full-length debut “Poets & Sinners.” Edward Rogers (vocals) and Steve Butler (vocals, guitar) lead a musical troupe of seven other musicians who collectively display a muscular style of melodic rock strongly rooted in classic song craft and bolstered by loads of inventive touches and winning harmonies. The tuneful “A Satisfied Mind,” chamber pop gems “Writing to the Moon” and “Luv Lock Bridge,” nuanced title track, Kinksflavored “Skimming Milk from the Cream” and the propulsive power pop rocker “Jump Like Alice” are among the killer originals on the inviting album.
