The donated pet foods went to the Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Pet Food Bank. Over 350 people came to inspect

NBC PS-News Staff A heat wave will grip the Inland Empire this week, pushing the mercury into the triple digits and an abundance of monsoonal moisture may generate isolated thunderstorms in some areas, forecasters said Monday. A high-pressure system expanding over the southwest region will bring warmer temperatures throughout the week, according to the National Weather Service. The system will also bring a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms Monday afternoon in the Riverside County mountains, NWS meteorologist Dan Gregoria said.

There will be greater chance of thunderstorms in the county mountains and the Coachella Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, Gregoria said. Flash flooding is also possible in those areas Tuesday and Wednesday, he said. High temperatures Monday are expected to reach 98 degrees in Riverside, 108 in Palm Springs, 97 in the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning and 93 in Temecula. Tips to Take Great Pet Pics By Desert Star Staff Whether you’re hoping to make your dog an Instagram sensation or you just want a nice portrait for the mantle, you’ve likely discovered pets, in general, can be elusive around cameras. Check out these tips and tricks for getting your fur baby to sit for the camera and look picture perfect, from e-tailer Zulily, creative photographer, Taylor Graham: • After choosing a great location for your shoot, give your pet a few minutes to get comfortable with the new setting. • If you’re shooting outside, situate your pet in a shaded area. Direct sunlight can make your pet look greasy, and distracting shadows can obscure important features. A flat, overcast day makes for the most flattering pet photos. • Get low to your pet’s level and frame the face tightly, focusing on eyes for maximum impact. Remember to photograph the most endearing parts of your pet. Often overlooked, paws and ears can be some of the most expressive and adorable

features of your furry friend. • Treats and squeaky toys are a given for getting pets to focus, but make sure you’re using them to your advantage. Hold the toy or treat as close to the lens as possible. This will get your pet’s gaze right where you want it to be. For capturing selfies, try the Sniff & Snap, a debut phone accessory which snaps onto the back of any mobile phone and features a slobber- and dishwashersafe compartment for your pet’s favorite treat -- making it easier to attract a dog, cat or any pet’s attention through the power of smell long enough for totally Insta-worthy portraits. Available for only $7.99 on Zulily, the online retailer also invites pet parents to tag @ zulily and share their #smelfie. • Most cameras and camera phones have a “burst mode” that takes many pictures in a row. Later you can select the perfect frame. • Don’t just pose your dog against a white wall. Add flair with accessories that fit your pet’s personality. For unique pet products at great prices, shop apps like Zulily. To celebrate the “dog days of summer” in

August, the app launches twomonth long sales (breaking from its traditional 72-hour sales) for pet parents that will help you capture lasting memories of your pooch. In addition to the Sniff & Snap phone accessory, are exclusive sets of day-in-thelife dog accessories curated in five distinct dog personality types, including: the Hiking Hound, the Pampered Pup, the Glamour Pooch, the Hipster Hound and the Dapper Dog.

For only $29.99, these exclusive sets represent some of the best deals in retail, and include a special treat (from Bark Brew to Dog Champagne), stylish accessories (from bandanas to bowties), feeding musthaves (like zippered travel or millennial pink bowls), engaging toys (pineapples, avocados, hiking boots) and pampering products (from sunscreen to hydrating butter to cologne). • With easy-to-use

smartphone apps like VSCO and Photoshop: Express, you can adjust brightness, color and sharpness to bring a professional quality to images in seconds. With a few tricks up your sleeve, you can take better pet snapshots, and what better way to celebrate the dog days of summer than by capturing some amazing memories of your furry friend? StatePoint

cause toxins to accumulate in your body,” Dr. An says. “Avoid these groups: red meat, gluten, refined sugar, processed food, alcohol, and caffeine.” Be careful with household products. Household cleaners, soaps, and beauty products all can contain harmful toxins that are absorbed through the skin. “Choose these products carefully,” Dr. An says, “and always make sure you know what’s in them. Some many great natural cleaners and products can help reduce the toxins your skin and body are exposed to.” Drink plenty of water. “Water has a multitude of benefits for your body, skin, and organs,” she says. “Drinking enough water is extremely important in getting rid of toxins in the body. It helps boost metabolism and can

flush out the harmful materials that have built up in your body.” Add plenty of dietary fiber and antioxidants to your diet. Eating foods with plenty of fiber, such as organic fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, will help your body move the toxins out. “Antioxidants help to fight free radicals and help to remove harmful materials further,” Dr. An says. Sweat it out. Sweating is a very effective way for the body to get rid of toxins. “Achieving this through exercise also keeps your organs and systems working properly, which plays a key role in releasing toxins,” Dr. An says. “Aside from exercising, hopping into a sauna or hot bath can help, too.” “Removing toxins is key to living a healthy life,” Dr. An says. “Just like many

of us do in our homes by procrastinating and getting sloppy, our body stores junk. Get rid of it once and for all.”

This Summer; 5 Tips To Detoxify By Desert Star Staff As summer winds down, some people who ditched their New Year’s weight-loss resolutions may re-dedicate themselves to looking good. Even more important, though, is what we put in our bodies. What we eat and drink not only impacts how we look, but how we feel. And to correctly set the tone for the inner body and good overall health, it’s vital to get the bad stuff – toxins – out, and keep them out, says Dr. Suhyun An (www. drsuhyunan.com), an expert on regenerative medicine and co-author of Demystifying Stem Cells: A Real-Life Approach to Regenerative Medicine. “People may want to

look good, but being truly healthy on the inside is a yearround commitment,” Dr. An says. “And you need to start by detoxifying the body. “Toxins can severely affect every part of the body. They’re in tons of every-day products. Being aware of them and avoiding them is essential to good health.” Dr. An provides five tips for cleaning out the toxins in your body: Reduce the toxins you’re taking in. The first step to cleaning out toxins in your body is to cut back – or eliminate – things you put into your body that contain them. “When something is hard for the body to digest, it can slow down your metabolism and

Cyber Crime – the World’s $6 Trillion Costs

By Janice Gough In an increasingly digital world, small businesses mustn’t get left behind when fending off cyber threats. While a recent study by Forbes Insights and The Hanover shows that 94% of most small business owners recognize they are exposed to cyber-attacks. However, only 20 percent feel adequately insured against cyber risks. This “coverage gap” is primarily driven by the challenges that businesses face when valuing their or other’s digital assets. And what makes them potential targets of a cyber breach in the first place.

Assessing Digital Risks Helping businesses understand they are big enough to be a target. And recognize they have ample digital assets of value to a cyber attacker is a critical first step. A second crucial step is for independent agents to guide business owners through the complexities of a cyber risk analysis so they can identify high-risk areas in their operations. Often, business owners conclude that they do not have any personally identifiable information in their systems, and their analysis stops there. Unfortunately, when it comes to small commercial insurance, and especially cyber, it is more complicated than that. The following are five key questions agents can ask to determine their customers’ most significant cyber risks: • Does your business have digital assets? Without knowing what your business is trying to protect, it is challenging to design a risk mitigation program. Small companies can have many digital assets, including design or manufacturing specs, their own or customers’ personal information, and mergers and acquisitions activity. • Do you know where those assets are located? Understanding where and how assets are stored is critical in determining what kind of coverage is needed to protect them. This can include on-site systems, cloud backups, historical hard copy information, data entrusted to

third parties (e.g., employee data managed by an HR suite or compensation management software provider) and more. • How does your business value those assets? Are you in a “high-trust” field (e.g., doctors, lawyers, etc.) where a cyber-attack would reduce consumer confidence? Reputation management is a crucial consideration in designing cyber insurance coverage plans. For more industrial or manufacturingbased clients, questions related to the importance of the digital assets include: “Would a shutdown cause the business to miss key deliverable dates?” and, “Could the data be easily recreated?” • Does your business have access to a third party’s system? Your clients may not store valuable assets themselves but could be targeted due to their access to larger, more data-rich organizations with which they have business relationships. • How long, or in what capacity, could you run operations if the pointof-sale or other systems were taken off-line? Some attacks are indiscriminate and cast large nets. An unknowing employee could erroneously click on a malware link in an email that results in files or systems being “locked.” Having coverage to mitigate risks associated with human error or employee negligence cannot be overstated for most businesses, especially those relying heavily

on point-of-sale, manufacturing, or other systems. Customizing Coverage Once digital asset risks are identified, the final step in a cyber risk analysis is determining which cyber insurance fits your needs. Cyber insurance can provide coverage for first- and thirdparty risks. This adds a level of complexity for businesses evaluating their needs. With almost every industry relying on computers, optimizing policies for coverages and appropriate limits are challenging. It’s critical to consider coverages and limits that address the exposures specific to your class of business. Here are three cyber coverage types to consider, based on needs: 1. Baseline. This coverage often is the best option for clients that do not have substantial exposures and do not require extensive protection. For instance, if a client does not collect vast amounts of personal information and does not have highly automated and connected manufacturing systems. An endorsement could be added to their existing package policy; offering added coverage needed to protect against cyber exposures. Endorsements are generally more straightforward and easier to purchase, as they may not require an underwriting application. Individuals can add this coverage to their homeowner or renter’s policy. 2. Stand-alone. For larger clients or more complex needs, stand-alone cyber coverages

can provide businesses with more comprehensive coverage and greater limits. While these products generally require underwriting applications, the simple process of completing the form is often beneficial for small enterprises, as questions typically involve securityrelated best practices. 3. Coverage continuity. It is also essential to be mindful that some cyber risks may be covered under other lines of insurance coverage. For example, false pretense coverage may be covered under a client’s crime insurance policy. However, it could be still beneficial to obtaining explicit cyber coverage on a cyberspecific policy, depending on the cyber exposures they would like to cover. An independent agent can help small business owners evaluate cyber insurance exposures and needs. As they will consider all available lines (cyber, package, crime, management liability, and more) to ensure your small businesses’ needs are addressed. By placing all coverages with a single carrier, the potential for coverage friction is minimized. Janice Gough is a Financial Advisor located at 125 E. Tahquitz, Palm Springs. More Killer Heat in Store for VA’s Future

Senior Climate Scientist Astrid Caldas says temperatures in the state will climb even higher. “Historically, there has been just one day across the state, on average per year, with a heat index above 105,” she states. “But that would increase to 17 days per year on average by mid-century, and 41 by century’s end.” The Southeast is expected to have the most drastic growth in extreme heat days nationwide, the report says. The report says people in outdoor jobs such as farmhands and construction workers will suffer most, in part because the heat also affects their paychecks and productivity. Caldas says more attention is needed to this growing threat. “Extreme heat kills about 600 people every year in the United States and, as it has been increasing lately because of global warming, it’s something that we should take really seriously,” she states. The report recommends the U.S. radically reduce its heat-trapping emissions and invest in low-carbon energy sources to avoid the rise in extreme heat. The Union of Concerned Scientists also is calling on public health systems to ramp up their responses to heat risks.

By Desert Star Staff As an extreme heatwave hits the US, locals are being asked to look after their older neighbors, activists try to save inmates from baking in prisons, and authorities hurry to take the homeless off the sizzling streets. The extreme temperatures, reaching as high as 95F (35C), have been plaguing large parts of the US from the Midwest to the East Coast over the past few days. At least six deaths have already been blamed on the extreme heatwave – four in Maryland and one each in Arizona and Arkansas. In some places, thermometers have hit triple digits, prompting the authorities and meteorological services to release numerous advisories on how to stay cool, open dedicated cooling centers and hold water parties of all sorts. The town of Braintree, Massachusetts, for example, is urging the populace to

deprived of air conditioning, shelter, and readily available water. Relief groups and authorities have been trying to check up on the homeless and provide them with some means to fend off the heat. In Indianapolis, police have spent hours distributing cold water to the homeless and directing them to shelters.

Extreme heatwave across US prompts concerns “stay cool and hydrated” and to check on elderly neighbors – while the town’s police department is telling aspiring criminals about the dangers of committing crimes in the extreme heat. “Folks. Due to the extreme heat, we are asking anyone thinking of doing criminal activity to hold off until Monday,” it said in a tonguein-cheek Facebook post. It is straight up hot as soccer balls out there. Conducting criminal activity in this extreme heat is next level henchmen status, and also very dangerous. It’s sound advice, too, considering that accomplished criminals possibly have it even worse in the country’s prisons. In New York, advocacy groups sounded the alarm over the lack of air conditioning and summer clothes at Rikers Island Prison and say the guards there have punished inmates for their attempts to stay cool.

Rikers inmates have died due to overheating before. In 2014, a prisoner “basically baked to death” in his cell due to malfunctioning heating equipment. The authorities have apparently heard the activists. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that proper clothing has been issued, and units

without air conditioning have been provided with “fans, ice, water, and access to multiple cool showers.” But Rikers is just one example, and numerous prisons across the states remain without functional air conditioning. Another vulnerable group, the homeless, have been plagued by the heat as well,

New Legislation Aims to Save At-Risk Species in US

By Desert Star Staff LANSING, Mich. — A new bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., would put almost $1.4 billion a year toward pulling at-risk animal and plant species back from the brink – with about $27 million of that for Michigan. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act would allow states and tribes to better implement their wildlife action plans to help save 12,000 species of concern, mostly by preserving habitat. It has bipartisan support, and Rep. Dingell said now is the time to act. “Do you know that one-third of all our wildlife species are at increased risk of extinction? And if we don’t start to work now, it’s going to be gone,” Dingell said. “I know this sounds corny, but can you imagine us without the monarch butterfly?” Habitat restoration is key, so states are now planting more milkweed, the monarch

butterfly’s favorite food, arguing this is far less expensive than the restrictions and lawsuits that would result if the butterfly has to be put on the endangered species list. Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, noted 304 species in Michigan are considered to be of greatest conservation need. “The best way to save these species, frankly, is to invest in proactive conservation now, before they reach a crisis point trying to bring them back,” O’Mara said. “The ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Amy Derosier, planning and adaptation section supervisor for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, said the state has already made significant progress with species like the peregrine falcon, trumpeter swan and the Kirtland’s warbler. “And the Kirtland’s Warbler,

CA English-Learner Programs to Get $10 Million in Current Budget

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. — One in four public-school students in California is an English learner, and now programs to help them become more fluent will receive funding to the tune of $10 million. The Newsom administration has agreed to add those funds to the current budget - and lawmakers will then hold until next year a bill that would fund bilingual programs going forward. Efrain Mercado, who is part of the state’s Dual Instruction Transition Team and is director of education for the nonprofit Children Now, said the money would be used to implement Prop 58, the Global Education Initiative, which was a reversal of the Prop 227 English-only approach from the 1990s. “We used to think that

students had to have Englishonly instruction in their main classrooms and then they would be pulled out for special sheltered classes,” Mercado said. “Today, it’s much more integrated.” There are 1.4 million English learners in the Golden State public school system. California students speak more than 60 native languages, and 60% of children younger than age five were born into homes where English is a second language. Mercado said in the 1980s and 1990s, the English as a Second Language programs made students feel like their first language was devalued, whereas the current curriculum celebrates diversity. “Now it’s respecting that home language; having that home language be an asset as opposed to a detriment, use

Trump & Democrats agree to offload US debt issue

By Desert Star Staff Republicans and Democrats have struck a deal on raising the debt ceiling and US government budgets through 2021, lowering the risk of a shutdown or a default and kicking the $22 trillion economic can down the road. President Donald Trump announced the deal in a tweet on Monday, calling it a “real compromise” that contained “no poison pills” and delivered “another big victory” for the

US military and veterans. The deal would raise the current budget cap by $320 billion over two years – $30 billion less than the Democrats demanded while delivering only half of the $150 billion in savings the Trump administration sought, according to Bloomberg. It also cancels the automatic cuts that would have decreased military spending by $71 billion and domestic expenditures by another $55 billion.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

Do you feel as if you’re on a cross, divided intensely between four ways, standing in the middle wondering which path to venture upon next? There are past issues that need tending and closure before knowing how to proceed. They are being illumined now so look around, assess, ponder, pray for guidance and have the intention to gracefully complete all things unfinished. Then the next page of your life turns.

TAURUS Keep going into the future even though many pressures pull you backward. The new Aquarian realities must be brought forth and each sign as a specific task and responsibility. You being Taurus have the illumination needed to communicate to others the plans and purposes of building the new era. You have a model to construct, things to build, expansions to bring forth, information to share so that all that is good can be salvaged. The God of the waters will help.

GEMINI Truly you are experiencing much duality; a confusing here and there. For balance, stand directly center. So you can see both sides before choosing. So you can observe clearly. So you can understand how to create a triangle of Synthesis. There are two paths outlined for you, yes? Choosing the right path is

revealed through revelation (symbols). Draw, visualize and ponder upon the following – a seven-pointed star, sixpointed star, five-pointed star, a triangle, the cross and a circle. Place (visualize) yourself at the center of each.

CANCER A duality is being presented to you in terms of your religious or spiritual practices. Perhaps there’s a fusion occurring between what you were taught and what you know or seek now. Perhaps you have found a new spiritual practice. Or maybe your friends don’t participate with you or support what you believe in. Is your communication possibly critical? Careful. You may not realize your tone of impatience. The homeopath Aconite neutralizes impatience (an excess of electrical energy). Stay out of rainstorms.

LEO Tend carefully to finances; ask for assistance if puzzled, embrace the future by banking locally and investing money in tangibles and goods that are practical yet sustaining. Plan on others learning from you. Humans, plants and animals, too. Past memories may appear. It’s good to ask, “Did I love enough?” If not, there’s still time. The saying, “Love is all there is” is real. It’s your mantram. A group offers two suggestions. Relationships fall sideways.

VIRGO

There may be some ongoing self-criticism and resulting heartaches. Previous beliefs and actions may no longer suffice. It’s important to know the critical thoughts are not true. They’re simply old remnants. It’s good to turn toward words of praise creating a journal of selfpraise which then allows your true identity, gifts and abilities to come forth. Praise of all things all around you neutralizes mental and emotional fear, sadness, illusions and distortions.

It’s time for something new in terms of relationships. It’s also time to travel somewhere you’ve been before to assess it with new eyes. AQUARIUS There is and will be a breaking away from your usual ways of being. What’s normal will be upside down for a while. This gives you time to assess who you are, what you value about yourself and how you would like to change. Increased social interactions lead to increased social successes. You are accomplishing life’s tasks on your own, in your own timing and rules. This is good. Finally, you have the freedom to step into your dreams.

Clearly you see that disappointments and sadnesses, those that lead to despair, are/were based upon unrealized hopes, dreams and wishes. These were not incorrect. Now you are aware of them. What you will do next? This question isn’t answerable yet. Keep observing, refining yourself and remain in a state of praise. . 9.6% over June a year ago. The number of domestic travelers grew 9.4% to more than 451,000. International passengers increased 12.6% to more than 26,000. “Ontario airport experienced significant growth in passenger volume during the first six months of the year as airlines initiated new services to major airports in Atlanta, Houston and San Francisco and added flights to existing routes,” said Mark Thorpe, chief executive officer of the OIAA. Air travelers can now reach 21 major domestic and international destinations

via nonstop commercial service from ONT. “Due to the great work of our staff and support of our community, local control is proving successful for ONT,” said Alan Wapner, OIAA President. “The growth in commercial service is a reflection of the strong demand for air travel in the Inland Empire and the many steps we have taken to provide facilities, amenities and services that appeal to business and leisure travelers, not to mention the positive, hassle-free customer service experience which distinguishes ONT.”

July 24, 2019

From January through June, cargo volume was up 3.7% to more than 364,000 tons compared to the same period last year. Cargo

shipments were essentially flat in June, growing 0.7% over the same month in 2018 to nearly 63,000 tons.

For Film Fun Say SHAZAM! DC Comics first introduced the world to a young teenager with superpowers back in the late 1930s. He is now back in Warner Bros. fun-filled screen adventure “Shazam!” Billy Batson (Asher Angel of TV’s “Andi Mack) is a street smart 14-year-old who has been in many foster homes. The latest is run by a caring couple (Marta Milans of TV’s “Killer Women” and Cooper Andrews of TV’s “The Walking Dead”) who have five other kids in their care. Soon Billy is befriended by Freddie (Jack Dylan Grazer of “It”) who is obsessed with superheroes. But before the main story begins, there is a prologue where we meet two youngsters. One is a boy who desperately wants to be as unique to his dad as his big brother is. Instead, he’s belittled by both of them. When he matures, the boy becomes Dr. Thaddeus Sivanna (Mark Strong of the “Kingsman” movies), who is the villain of the piece. The prologue then cuts to

a small boy at a carnival with his teenage mother. When they become separated, she never tries to find him so young Billy is placed in foster care. At this point, the main story begins. At school, Freddie, who walks with a crutch, is bullied by two brothers. When Billy tries to rescue Freddie, he is quickly pursued by the two older boys. To escape them, he jumps into a subway car that takes him to the realm of an old wizard who is looking for a pure spirit so he can transfer his powers to him. With the magic word “SHAZAM!” the wizard transforms Billy into a man (Zachary Levi of TV’s “Chuck” and Disney’s “Tangled.”) This is where the real fun begins. Levi is able to give the adult superhero the innocence and sensibilities of a kid whenever Billy shouts out “Shazam.” Billy reveals his superhero side to Freddie, who is delighted. At this point, the two boys try to discover what powers Billy actually has. This is where the real fun begins.

By Desert Star Staff A Republican group has distanced itself from an altered movie poster that appeared on its Facebook page, depicting four progressive congresswomen as ‘The Jihad Squad’. The post sparked outrage

among local Democrats. The now deleted post appeared on the Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association Facebook page on Friday evening. The image is a doctored poster from the 2013 film ‘Gangster Squad’, with the faces of Reps. Alexandria

Levi is adorable as he finds he can fly and shoot lightning bolts from his fingertips. He also becomes famous when Freddie puts his actions on Facebook and YouTube. This alerts doctor Sivanna who wants these powers for himself alone. Levi, as the manly hero who really is a kid inside literally, steals the movie, which is a good thing. However, the film directed by David F.

Sandberg, with a screenplay by Henry Gayden, could have been even better if some of the lengthy battle scenes were shorter in duration. But overall, “Shazam!” is loads of fun for adults and kids. “Shazam!” has a running time of 132 minutes and is rated PG13 for intense sequences of action and language. “Shazam!” is now

available on Blu-ray and DVD and contains more than 90 minutes of supercharged special features. They include an exclusive motion comic: ‘Superhero Hooky’ as well as an alternate opening and ending plus deleted scenes. And that’s not all. There’s a gag reel, audition footage, Shazam’s backstory and an on set feature with Zachary Levi.

Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) photoshopped onto the protagonists. “Jihad Squad,” the poster reads, with the tagline: “Political Jihad is their game. If you don’t agree with their socialist ideology, you’re racist.” It is unclear who created the poster, which circulated on social media for quite some time before an unknown GOP operative thought it would be a good idea to post it on the association’s official page. After the story broke in the local media on Sunday, the outraged Cook County Democratic Party demanded

an apology and that the post be taken down, even though it had already been deleted by then. The Democrats slammed it as “a racist and inflammatory attack” that “perpetuates the recent attacks by President [Donald] Trump.” The Illinois branch of the Republican Party was quick to distance itself from the post, saying it was “unauthorized” and promising to tighten up the “internal review process.” Local GOP leaders condemned the post, but also took the opportunity to criticize ‘The Squad’ for their “socialist policies” and “anti-Semitic language,” the Republicans’ usual line

of attack against them. Trump has faced accusations of racism for tweeting that the four congresswomen should “go back” to their own “broken and crime infested” homelands and later allowing the crowd at a rally to chant “send her back” for 13 seconds in reference to Omar. Taking heat from both Democrats and Republicans, Trump remained unruffled by the accusations and took another swipe at ‘The Squad’ on Sunday, demanding they “apologize to America (and Israel) for the horrible (hateful) things they have said.”

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN

The Hilarious “The Play That Goes Wrong” Entertains at the Ahmanson Theatre

L-R: Angela Grovey and Scott Cote in a scene from “The Play That Goes Wrong” – a farcical/slapstick look at the technical challenges facing actors. Photo: by Jeremy Daniel The Mischief Theatre production of The Play That Goes Wrong, written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, could be subtitled, Laurel & Hardy meet the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges with a sprinkling of the comic antics of Max Sennett and Charlie Chaplin, who before “talkies,” entertained filmgoing audiences with his hilarious slapstick routines. Incorporating various elements of physical and visual comedy, the madcap antics begin as the audience is taking its seats. Stagehands are checking props and set pieces in anticipation of the opening night of The Murder at Haversham Manor, presented by The Cornley University Drama Society. The plot centers on a murder that has taken place on the eve of the engagement of Florence Colleymoore (Jamie Ann Romero) to Charles Haversham (Yaegel T. Welch.) The lighting and sound operator, wonderfully played by Brandon J. Ellis, is trying to close a door which, despite many attempts, simply won’t stay closed. A great example of building on a comedic action, it remains closed for a second or two and then reopens. Another visual gag centers around a piece of wood one of the actors is trying to attach as a mantle, but it keeps falling off. The same actor is attempting to find a way to keep the door closed while at the same time holding up the mantlepiece. He accomplishes this through the use of various limbs. The stage manager, Annie (Angela Grovey,) comes to the rescue of the malfunctioning props wielding a giant roll of masking tape, which she uses to secure the mantle. More slapstick antics ensue and remember all this is taking place before the actual play begins. Later on, when the

10

DesertSTAR

grieving fiancée has a fainting spell, Annie steps in and reads her lines from the script. Subsequently, because she’s enjoying “acting,” she gets into a physical confrontation with the actress playing Colleymore, who is dragged off the stage through a pane-less window by the other actors. With set pieces seemingly under control, and before the action actually begins, a speech is given to the audience by the director – not the brilliant original Broadway director Mark Bell or the National Tour Director Matt DiCarlo, but the play within the play director, characterized by talented Evan Alexander Smith, who also plays Inspector Carter. Confused? That’s ok. It is confusing, but laughter abounds every step of the way. He addresses the audience thanking them for their patience and apologizes for the mix-up to those people thinking they bought tickets

to a performance of Hamilton. He gives some background on the 1920 mystery thriller, and the action finally begins with the dead body of murdered Charles stretched out on the sofa. However, it’s hard for him to stay dead, and every once in a while, he moves a different part of his body. Inspector Carter arrives and tries to hang up his coat, but there’s no hook, and his coat falls to the floor, which he ignores. This is just one of the myriad sight gags that will keep you laughing. Another comedic element is the split “bad timing” on some of the dialogue where the reaction comes before the actual line. For example, but not necessarily in the play, someone says, “God bless you” before the sneeze. An actual example is when bad-tasting whiskey is poured, and the actors spit it out with the line “That’s the best whiskey I’ve ever had.” These

miss-timed or contradictory lines permeate the entire play resulting in the audience trying to catch its collective breath as these moments appear at an accelerated rate. At one point, the inspector is late on his entrance, so the rest of the cast freezes in place until he finally appears and delivers his line. The audience even got into the act. One of the characters is looking for something, and someone yells, “Look under the chair!” In the genre of farce or slapstick, the brilliantly designed “non-functional” set by Nigel Hook is absolutely spot-on as just when you thought nothing else could malfunction, something does. Another comical moment is when the inspector, along with Cecil Haversham, (Ned Noyes) brother of the deceased Charles, attempt to remove the body from the parlor sofa. As the not really dead body is laid on top of a stretcher, it collapses, leaving a gaping hole where the canvas should be, but, ignoring that mishap, they carry out an empty stretcher. The actor playing Charles (Yaegel T. Welch) knows he shouldn’t still be on stage and slowly, ever so slowly, crawls off and despite being “dead,” turns up unexpectedly from time to time throughout the play where he is reminded by another cast member that he’s supposed to be dead. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Perkins the butler, who constantly screws up his lines and misses cues. This delightful character is wonderfully played by Scott Cote. With his almost operatic, beautiful

booming bass voice, the most imposing Peyton Crim plays Florence’s brother Thomas Colleymoore. He is a master of visual comedy and perched high above the stage, he uses just about every part of his body from head to toe to keep the set pieces from falling to the floor below. Despite one technical snafu after another, all of which are ignored by the actors, Inspector Carter finally solves the crime. This is not a spoiler, but think Charles’ brother Cecil and the heartbroken fiancée Florence. I hope that’s not TMI. Contributing to the critical technical elements of this production are Ric Mountjoy’s excellent lighting design, Roberto Surace’s costumes, Andrew Johnson’s sound design, and Rob Falconer’s pre-set original “goofy” or “silly” music, which set the tone on what silliness lay ahead. “The Play That Went Wrong” Ahmanson Theatre 135 N. FAMILY FEATURES

hen it’s hot outside, heat can seep into your home and make it unbearable. However, there are sustainable, eco-friendly solutions to maximize comfort and cooling when the thermometer creeps upward without racking up an outrageous electric bill or large carbon footprint. While some options for keeping your home cool involve an upfront investment, over time they’ll save money, and the environment, for years to come. If you’re looking for ways to cool your home during even the hottest days, consider these ideas from the experts at Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating.

Adjust Ceiling Fans Installing ceiling fans in your home can help keep temperatures moderate and cut down on your cooling bill. For best results, those ceiling fans should be adjusted seasonally. During warm weather months, fans should rotate counterclockwise at a higher speed to push air downward instead of up toward the ceiling, which can lead to a more comfortable temperature in your home.

Upgrade Your Air Conditioner If your home’s climate control is lacking, it may be time to invest in a new HVAC system – particularly if your current one is more than 15 years old. An energy-efficient option like Mitsubishi Electric’s sleek and modern MLZ One-Way Ceiling Cassette is designed for easy installation and saves energy by monitoring room conditions to make automatic adjustments to maintain the temperature you choose. To improve your indoor air quality, the MLZ uses reusable air filters, which are easy to remove, wash and reinstall. In Dry mode, the unit makes the air feel fresher by removing excess moisture. Additionally, these ceiling cassettes can be programmed to operate around your life using a remote control, smartphone or tablet. Whether gone for the day or on an extended vacation, you can monitor your system from an app, ensuring you won’t return to a home that’s blazing hot.

Reduce Incoming Sunlight During the Day Direct sunlight coming into your home through windows, doors or skylights can increase the temperature. To help reduce unwanted heat as the sun rises higher during the day, consider closing your blinds or installing light-colored blinds that reflect rather than absorb the sun’s heat. Other options such as blackout curtains or reflective window panels

can have the same effect, helping reduce warmth trapped inside. If closing all your blinds or covering every window isn’t an option or makes you feel claustrophobic, focus on any southor west-facing rooms in your home, as these are typically the trickiest to keep cool during the warmest hours of the day – usually from late morning until early evening. Exterior window shades and awnings can also be useful options if you’re looking to reduce the amount of heat that enters

your home, but still want to take advantage of the natural light.

Change Your Light Bulbs Since warmer weather also equates to more sunshine, turning off the incandescent lights in your house when possible can cut down on extra heat and save on your energy bill. Though the soft yellow glow of incandescent light bulbs can create a nice ambiance, it also gives off a lot of heat. Swapping out those old light

bulbs for more efficient, LED bulbs can cut down on the amount of heat your light fixtures emit. If you can’t replace them, minimizing their usage – particularly when having a light on in a room is unnecessary – can make a difference.

Strategically Plant Trees and Shrubs Planting trees or shrubs near sunlight-facing windows can make a big difference when it comes to the temperature inside your home by shielding the sun’s rays. While planting trees strategically around your home is more of a long-term plan, the benefits can also last for many years to come in terms of shade, added curb appeal and overall betterment of the earth. Start by focusing on west-facing walls, where the sun is typically the strongest. Choosing trees native to your area can decrease maintenance, and those that bloom in spring and drop leaves in the fall offer year-round benefits by providing both shade and heat in accordance with the season. Vines and other tall shrubs are options for quicker results, but they may also require more long-term maintenance.

Reduce Appliance Usage To help minimize running appliances and equipment that generate a lot of heat, like stoves and ovens, choose to cook outdoors or opt for quicker meals you can prepare using the microwave, which doesn’t heat the house to the same extent. While grilling and eating outside more frequently may require an awning or gazebo to stay cooler, it can beat the alternative of warming up your oven, and ultimately your home, for an extended period of time. Reducing your usage of other heat-producing appliances such as computers, dishwashers, clothes dryers, curling irons and hair dryers can also help keep interior temperatures comfortable and energy use low. Try using these appliances earlier in the day to minimize the extra load placed on your air conditioner. Keeping cool during warm weather months doesn’t have to be complicated. Take advantage of these measures to reduce your home’s heat load and energy bill. Find more tips for cooling your home at mitsubishicomfort.com.

Multi-format ‘Pretenders With Friends’ Among Essential New Releases of players. Information: shootoutsmusic.com.

A legendary concert event where The Pretenders were joined by the illustrious likes of Shirley Manson (Garbage), Iggy Pop and Kings of Leon is now out as a special deluxe edition that looks and sounds great. Underthe-radar releases from The Shootouts and Auburn are also deserving of attention. Artist: The Pretenders Title: Pretenders With Friends (Cleopatra Entertainment) You might like if you enjoy: Chrissie Hynde, Shirley Manson, Kings of Leon, Incubus, Iggy Pop Tell me more: The Pretenders’ legacy was set in stone long ago with Chrissie Hynde and company having recorded some of rock’s most enduring rock songs. Another chance to celebrate the Pretenders’ groundbreaking sound was cast when the

troupe welcomed a number of notable guests for a special 2006 concert at the Decades Rock Arena in Atlantic City, NJ that has now been released via a glorious collection that includes a Blu-ray, DVD and audio CD. The special event saw the Pretenders cover their most beloved hits; special guests would join them for select tracks with the Pretenders then covering a guest’s song as well. So for example, Singer Shirley Manson joined in on “Talk of the Town” before the Pretenders returned the favor on a cover of Garbage’s “Only Happy When It Rains” (the vocal interplay with the two singers is an absolute delight). Other top-tier highlights on the title include “Drive” featuring Incubus, “Candy” with Iggy Pop, and the Pretenders sans guests rocking on “Brass in Pocket” and “Mystery Achievement.” The full lineup

of players join forces for the set-ending “Middle of the Road.” The visual and audio quality of this multi-format title is fantastic, with the masterful song selections adding to the magic across the 75-minute concert film/recording. Bonus material includes a number of interview clips with members of the Pretenders and the guests. Information: http:// www.CleopatraRecords.com. Artist: The Shootouts Title: Quick Draw (Shootouts Music) You might like if you enjoy: Buck Owens, Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives, Gram Parsons Tell me more: The Shootouts’ stellar “Quick Draw” is an album that is fun, expertly crafted and is filled with outstanding songs that are performed When not running around in Hollywood, Manny enjoys relaxing at home with his babies — Nemo, Tony, Tia, (all terrier mix), Twinkle, and Dory, the kitty cat. Manny loves calling the Coachella Valley his home. You can follow Manny on Facebook here, Twitter, LinkedIn, and

with the talented touch of crafty veterans. The nimble “Cleaning House,” touching “I’d Rather Be Lonely,” and rapid fire “If I Could” are among the memorable cuts that build on the winning ways of country icons ranging from Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam to Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives. The Shootouts (lead singer-guitarist Ryan Humbert, harmony vocalist Emily Bates, guitarist Brian Poston, bassist Ryan McDermott and dummer Dylan Gomez) are joined by a slew of notable guests to extend their artful reach. Just listen to the blistering instrumental title cut, the lovely “If We Quit Now” and playful “Who Needs Rock & Roll” to hear how great Western swing, honky tonk, Americana and traditional country music sound when blended by the right bunch

Artist: Auburn Title: Game Of Faith (Scarlet Records/Gonzo) You might like if you enjoy: Macy Gray, Bonnie Raitt, Kate Bush Tell me more: Released back on June 28, don’t let Auburn’s “Game Of Faith” escape your attention. The U.K.-based group has released a 14-track disc that blends blues and Americana in spades with touches of other styles adding to the musical magic. Led by talented singer-songwriter Liz Lenten, the group also features guitarist Thomm Jutz (who recorded, mixed and produced the new album), bassist Mark Fain, drummer Lynn Williams and harmony vocalist Britt Savage. Armed with a voice that is decidedly husky, Lenten’s soprano simultaneously carries an emotional torch that lights up the ballads and mid tempo tracks that fill the disc. Among the many standouts on the album is the slow bluesy title track, uptempo “I Don’t Love Him” (where Jutz shows off plenty of tasty guitar licks), the jazz-meets-blues gem “Prosecco-fuelled Profiles,” infectious pop-rock oriented “Trinidad” and undeniable “Spoke in the Wheel” with its wonderful chorus. Choosing the Right Doctor for Your Medical Care By Desert Star Staff Choosing the right doctor is one of the most important decisions people can make for their health. If you are unsure who to turn to for your general care, experts point out that internal medicine specialists, or internists, specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a broad spectrum of illnesses that affect adults throughout their lives, making them the right choice for many adults. Before selecting an internal medicine doctor, it’s helpful to learn a little bit more about their training and specialties. Trained to care for adults, many general internal medicine doctors, or general internists, practice in an officebased setting as primary care physicians for adults, following patients from their teens through their senior years for ongoing medical care. Other general internists spend the majority of their time caring for hospitalized patients in the role of a hospitalist. Due to the broad, intensive nature of core internal medicine training, which requires a three-year residency program after graduating from medical

school, general internists aren’t limited to one type of medical problem or organ system, making them especially well-qualified to care for patients with complex conditions or multi-system diseases. “Comprehensive education and training make the internist particularly suited to care for the whole person,” says American College of Physicians (ACP) President Dr. Robert M. McLean. “Many patients appreciate the tailored prevention and treatment plans that internists can provide. From the internist’s perspective, we value long-term relationships with patients and working closely with them to provide compassionate, quality care.” While training of general internists does not include pediatrics, obstetrics, or major surgery, patients requiring those services can turn to their general internist for recommendations and referrals. Internal medicine is a wide-ranging field, as many subspecialty areas of medicine require internal medicine training as a foundation, including

Training to become an internal medicine subspecialist is both broad and deep, and includes a three-year residency program plus one

to three years of fellowship training, depending on the subspecialty. General internists even receive some training in each internal medicine subspecialty during their three-year residency program. To learn more about internal medicine, visit acponline.org, the website of ACP, a membership organization representing internal medicine doctors, and the largest medical specialty organization in the U.S.

“With such in-depth training in the complete care of adults, internal medicine specialists and subspecialists are excellent choices to help patients navigate the increasingly complex world of medical care,” says Dr. McLean, a rheumatologist. “Whether you are healthy or have a chronic illness such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease, an internist can provide comprehensive, coordinated care.” StatePoint

How Patients Can Ensure They’re Considering Every Cancer Treatment Option

By Desert Star Staff Melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, is one of the most common types of cancer in the U.S. and rates are on the rise. Choosing a course of treatment is one of the biggest decisions one makes while battling cancer, but experts say that many patients aren’t being told about a critical option: clinical trials. Only one in four people know anything about clinical trials, according to the National Institutes of Health, and only 15 percent of patients report ever having been asked to participate. But clinical trials are not only a way to gain access to new, potentially lifesaving treatments that may prove more beneficial than

drugs on the market, they are also what’s made every single FDA-approved drug that exists today possible. While melanoma therapies have improved dramatically over the past decade, there’s still no cure. “We have made enormous strides in treating melanoma, but too many people still aren’t benefiting from even the newest approaches,” says Marc Hurlbert, Ph.D., Melanoma Research Alliance, chief science officer. “Lack of awareness about treatment opportunities, particularly for patients seen outside of premier cancer centers, along with myths associated with research studies, continue to present obstacles for

patient participation.” Patients should understand all of their options to make the best possible decisions about their care. “I would not be alive today, I mean hands down, without clinical trials. Stage IV melanoma had a 14 percent five-year survival rate when I was diagnosed in 2012,” says Jamie Troil Goldfarb, a stage IV melanoma survivor. Choosing a treatment direction, including whether or not to enter into a clinical trial, is a big decision. To help people make informed decisions and understand just how important clinical trials are to everyone, the Melanoma Research Alliance created resources and tools about July 24, 2019

clinical trials, and is dispelling these five common myths: 1) MYTH: Clinical trials are a last resort. REALITY: Joining a clinical trial is a viable treatment option from day one of your diagnosis. 2) MYTH: I might get a sugar pill (placebo) without any real treatment. REALITY: In melanoma clinical trials, patients may receive a placebo in addition to an FDA-approved standard of care treatment. Whether you’re getting a standard or investigational therapy, by participating in a clinical trial, you’ll receive close monitoring of your condition. 3) MYTH: Clinical trials cost more than standard treatment. REALITY: The trial sponsor usually pays for the experimental therapy. They may also pay for any additional tests or visits required for the study. Patients, or their insurance, are responsible for the usual costs of care needed regardless of being in a clinical trial.

4) MYTH: If clinical trials were right for me, my doctor would say something. REALITY: Not all doctors are aware of all options. Patients should be their own advocate and research what’s available. 5) MYTH: If I change my mind, or the treatment isn’t working, I’m stuck. REALITY: Clinical trial participation is voluntary and you can quit any time for any reason. Currently, there are over 400 melanoma-focused trials actively enrolling patients. These trials will help develop new and improve existing treatments, and offer patients an opportunity to access cutting edge therapies. To learn more and be matched to clinical trials in your area, visit curemelanoma. org/clinicaltrials. If you are battling melanoma, or any cancer, remember to ask about clinical trials. You haven’t considered all of your options until you do. StatePoint

Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Study reveals shocking levels of contamination at US beaches By Desert Star Staff You may want to think twice before that summer swim. Many of our country’s idyllic beaches conceal a filthy secret below the sand and waves: dangerous levels of bacteria that put thousands of bathers at risk every year. In a recently published study conducted by the Environment America Research and Policy Center, researchers found that the water at beaches in 29 coastal and Great Lakes states contained concentrations of bacteria well in excess of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards – including the harmful organisms that inhabit human feces – which they said could sicken millions of beachgoers annually. “It’s hard to believe that 47 years after we passed the Clean Water Act that we are still concerned with poop in the water when people want to go swimming,” John Rumpler, clean water program director for the center, told USA Today. Bacteria levels can spike to dangerous levels on certain days, such as when rain washes waste from the streets into creeks or streams, which flow into larger bodies of water. Some areas fare much worse than others, however.

In Chicago, all of the 19 beaches sampled were considered unsafe for at least one day in 2018, while the city’s South Shore Beach registered contamination in 93 of the 98 samples collected. California’s Cabrillo Beach also came in high on the list, considered unsafe in 85 out of 175 samples in one section. On the cleaner end of the spectrum, Georgia’s Jekyll Driftwood Beach provided only two contaminated samples out of 46, and Florida’s Bird Key Park resulted in 17 dirty samples out of 67, suggesting that even the tidier beaches can be risky on some days. The harmful microbes found in the water can cause a litany of unpleasant symptoms in their human hosts, ranging from gastrointestinal illness, respiratory disease, as well as ear, eye, and skin infections. However, the most nightmarish surprise lurking below the depths, and one not covered by the center’s study, goes by the name of necrotizing fasciitis – or flesh-eating bacteria. While the horrifying condition is rare, some of the 30 or so organisms that cause the illness are native to America’s lakes and coasts. Two recent cases in Florida left one man dead, while another man nearly lost a leg.

Fortunately, things might not be all bad when it comes to America’s squalid beaches. Luke Ginger, the water quality scientist for environmental organization Heal The Bay, told

USA Today that the national trends were moving in the right direction, mainly through local government initiatives to treat stormwater runoff, among other anti-pollution measures.

“There are improvements that can be made, but for the most part, there’s excellent water quality,” Ginger said. “There are just a few beaches that have issues.”

“Do you know that one-

third of all our wildlife species are at increased risk of extinction? And if we don’t start to work now, it’s going to be gone,” Dingell said. “I know this sounds corny, but can you imagine us without the monarch butterfly?” Habitat restoration is key, so states are now planting more milkweed, the monarch butterfly’s favorite food, arguing this is far less expensive than the restrictions and lawsuits that would result if the butterfly has to be put on the endangered species list. Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, noted 304 species in Michigan

are considered to be of greatest conservation need. “And the Kirtland’s

Warbler, they were one of the first species to be on the federal Endangered Species Act, and they’re getting close to coming off of that list,” Derosier said. “So, when we work together and when we put resources, we really can move the needle and really see a difference.” Derosier said programs to improve water quality would go a long way toward

saving many at-risk species of fish, mussels and birds. It also would bolster the state’s outdoor economy, which generates more than $11 billion a year. Save Money on Summer Road Trips By Desert Star Staff If financial constraints are keeping you from exploring the world, it may be time to reassess your approach to travel. From road trips across the country to jaunts across your state, there are plenty of ways to curb costs, so your biggest challenge is finding more days away from the office, not replenishing your bank account. Make reservations in advance. Shopping early for lodging is one way to save. Give yourself plenty of time to watch deals so you can grab the best one, and if it’s possible, be flexible with the travel dates. Shifting your trip by even a day can sometimes make a difference in the rates. Utilize rewards programs. Shopper loyalty programs make it easy to save money on essential purchases. Not only can you access exclusive card-holder discounts, but you can accumulate rewards points or even earn cash back. For example, with the Shell | Fuel Rewards® credit cards, you can save 10 cents per gallon (up to 20 gallons) every time you fill up at Shell,

in addition to earning rebates on other qualifying purchases. See store for details or learn more at shell.us/roadtrip. Share the journey. If your travel party consists of multiple families, consolidate into as few vehicles as you can. This helps minimize costs on everything from gas to per-vehicle admission fees at destinations like national parks. Pack snacks. Next to lodging, food is the biggest expense you’re likely to encounter on a road trip. Consider packing snacks for the road so you can save money while managing your hunger. Alternatively, an option like the Shell | Fuel Rewards Mastercard lets you earn rebates on qualifying purchases made with the card. Be conscious of your gas mileage. You may not have much of a choice when it comes to which vehicle you’ll drive, but paying more attention to your driving habits can stretch your gas tank a little further. Be sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure. If your vehicle is a gas guzzler, consider renting a more efficient vehicle for the trip.

Photo courtesy of Getty Weigh the additional cost of the rental versus what you may spend in fuel for your personal car before making a decision. Research attractions. Admission fees to various attractions can really add up, but a little pre-planning can

help you capitalize on discount days and other special deals. If your plans are flexible, you can schedule your trip around those offers to capture the same experiences at a significantly lower price tag. Travel doesn’t have to

drain your wallet. Managing your trips with practical tips like these may even free up enough funds so you can fit in an extra adventure or two. Content courtesy of Shell Family Features
