By Desert Star Staff Wednesday, Special Olympics announced the next phase of global expansion of Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® (UCS) – one of the largest initiatives for inclusion in education for young people with and without intellectual disabilities – through the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. Building on over a decade of success of UCS in the United States and growing impact in more than fifty other countries around the world, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has committed $25 million on behalf of the
people of the UAE in order to bring this initiative to six countries – Argentina, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Romania and Rwanda. Special Olympics will lead the growth of UCS in these countries, empowering young leaders to create lasting social change through inclusion in education for people with and without intellectual disabilities. “The Special Olympics movement is being led by young leaders with and without intellectual disabilities who are emerging as the world’s greatest teachers of empathy, dignity, courage, and inclusion,” said Dr. Timothy Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics. “As we search for a more just and joyful future, we are trusting our hopes to young inclusive leaders who
see beyond division and fear and show us how to heal and unite. I am deeply grateful that His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has made an extraordinary commitment to our athletes and their Unified partners in Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools®. His vision and generosity will empower young people around the world to break down barriers caused by injustice and intolerance, end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities, and establish inclusive cultures where every human being is respected, valued and welcomed.” Young People with intellectual disabilities are among those most

Neighboring during COVID-19
By Melissa Martin, Ph.D. “It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood. A beautiful day for a neighbor. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?... I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you. I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you…Please, won’t you be my neighbor.” Lyrics by TV show host Fred Rogers. There are many ways in which our neighbors can annoy us. And many ways we can annoy them. But the stayat-home mandate has taken neighborhood togetherness to a different level. People packed into apartments and busy
cities like sardines probably want less neighboring. How do we solve neighborhood problems with civility and respectful words and actions? What if the problem keeps going on and on like the Energizer Bunny? When do we speak-up and when do we shut-up? One neighbor’s big dog visits the yards of others (including mine) and leaves an unwanted gift. And you can’t regift dog poop. How long has this poo-fest been happening? Being at home during the pandemic allows us to be more observant. Options: Take a picture of the dog using your yard as a toilet and show the neighbor to prove it is not a stray dog. Or stay quiet to keep the peace. How would you react? Cat urine is distinctly smelly. What do you do when neighborhood cats pee on your porch? Standing watch 24 hours a day is a tiresome option, even if you’re quarantined at home. And it’s not the
fault of the animals—it’s inconsiderate pet owners. In a 2010 article in Psychology Today, Jacinta Francis Ph.D. wrote “Unwanted noise is the complaint I’ve encountered most during discussions with friends and colleagues. Noise can come from loud music and conversation, machinery, traffic, screaming children and barking dogs.” I’ll admit that my dog is territorial and barks when anyone, friend or foe, comes near our fenced yard. However, she is not allowed to bark incessantly. And her bedtime is 10 pm. Hearing the neighborhood children laughing and playing is delightful. However, loud teen music that glories violence and profanity is inappropriate and irritating. Partying neighbors that get tipsy on their patio during the summer months and sing the Doobie Brother’s greatest hits at the top of their lungs at midnight is humorous. Even if they can’t
carry a tune in a bucket. What boils my beans is listening to a parent scream at her/his kids. I would like to give her/him a copy of Screamfree Parenting, a program to help parents chill before they spill. What should you do if your neighbor flies a drone over your property? Smile and wave to the hidden camera. Some drones are equipped with cameras and telephoto lenses. Do you ignore the hovering spy or chat with the person for a solution? What should you do if a neighbor’s guest smashes into your mailbox a with a truck? Then he speeds away. But you caught it on camera. What if a resident in the neighborhood is stealing tomatoes from your garden? Do you accuse them of trespassing or offer to give them tomatoes if they ask? The IKO Community Management website lists the most common reasons behind neighbor disputes: noise, pets, children, physical appearance of your home,
property boundaries, suspected criminal behavior, health or building code violations, and parking. Visit www. ikocommunitymanagement. com. “Some of us are lucky to have neighbors like the late Mr. Rogers. But for many, neighbors range from nuisance to nightmare. What can you do about it? Many neighbor disputes end up in court because of poor communication. If something’s happening that’s dangerous or illegal, the cops are the obvious answer. But if problems arise that are a bit more gray, communication is the best way to save money and hassle,” says Brandon Ballenger in a 2019 article for Reader’s Digest. “It’s social distancing time in the neighborhood. Would you please stay six feet away from me and wave at me? We’ll be neighbors from afar. Won’t you be my neighbor? But only if you wear a mask.” New lyrics for a quarantined neighborhood. By Desert Star Staff Black Americans are more than twice as likely as whites to die of COVID-19, but even before the pandemic, racial
health disparities too often cut short the lives of people of color. North Carolina is one of a handful of states that has refused billions of federal

Workers Union, and a member of Black Workers for Justice. He said for years, workers of color have advocated for Medicaid expansion in the state - and the current public health crisis illustrates why. “And it would have brought a whole lot more health coverage to people throughout this state,” Smith said. “All these different things link up. You’ve got poverty wages; people can’t get healthcare, so people can’t get preventative maintenance, so they won’t get sick.” The North Carolina General Assembly passed Senate Bill 808, touted as a Medicaid “transformation,” which was signed this month by Gov. Roy Cooper. It changes the way healthcare providers are paid, and backers have said this will make it easier for Medicaid patients to get some types of services.
For now, however, 500,000 North Carolinians who could have been eligible are still shut out. Smith said for him, politicians’ stance on universal healthcare and Medicaid expansion signal whether they are genuinely committed to racial justice. And he isn’t happy with either major party’s presidential front-runner. “Joe Biden isn’t even for universal healthcare, or Medicare for all,” he said. “Even though people don’t like Donald Trump, Joe Biden is just back to the old status quo anyway.” According to state data from 2018, Black infants and children die at higher rates than their white peers. Rates of obesity and heart disease also are higher among Black North Carolinians compared with whites. www.desertstarweekly.com

As part of DCT’s mission to integrate the arts into classroom academics, for schools, a downloadable Behind the Curtain Resource Guide is also available. The guide is intended to provide helpful information for a teacher to use before and after seeing the production. The activities presented in the guide are designed to stimulate lively responses and multisensory explorations of concepts in order to use the theatrical event as a vehicle for cross-cultural and language arts learning. It is an opportunity to use theater as a springboard for dynamic learning, extending the dramatic experience of the play. ANDI BOI is about Andi, a transgender teen entering his first day of high school identifying as a male. Former classmates recall his last name when they hear it, but there is something different about Andi that keeps the dots from connecting clearly in their minds. Soon his new teachers, classmates, and his classmates’ parents will figure it out. How will they react? With aggression? With compassion? With confusion? Inspired by one teen’s journey, ANDI BOI is told with a sensitivity towards Andi and uses wit, heart, and warmth to help audiences find their way to greater compassion and awareness.
Photo Credit: Karen Almond DCT commissioned local playwright, Bruce Coleman, to write ANDI BOI. His first decision was to speak with some of the two percent of high school students who identify as transgender. For Coleman, this included talking to a young boy who recently transitioned and his parents. Using these conversations and research as inspiration, Coleman said he deliberately decided to use honesty and humor as tools for telling this story in hopes that it would have the broadest possible appeal. Coleman hoped to create an atmosphere of good will and understanding that will help audiences begin an important conversation around this topic. “I hope as people get to know Andi, they’ll also get to know something about themselves,” Coleman said. “As a gay man, I too kept
a secret from my family until it became impossible to deny who I was anymore.” Coleman continued, “I feared rejection from family and friends as they discovered who I am, but I ultimately took that rejection and turned it into strength. I have been pushed at by a society that wants to squeeze me into a box and force me to be a thing that goes against everything that makes me this person I am. But when all has been said and done and because of a strong belief in myself, I can finally achieve my heart’s desire: To be seen, to be respected, and to be treasured. It’s all Andi and I are asking for.” Over the past 15 years, DCT has offered several teen issue plays that examine topics including bullying, learning differences, teen brain development, eating disorders, and dating violence.
Subject matter resources lead a discussion after each of these types of performances. At the performances, teens and parents are provided information and perspective on the topic, as well as guidance on how to navigate the inherent trauma imbedded in these situations. Online, DCT has amassed a host of links and resources for audiences. “I believe theater provides a powerful tool during our children’s transition to adulthood by spotlighting some of the serious challenges they and their peers encounter along the way,” Flatt said. “It is up to us to help all our children, irrespective of color, creed, or gender orientation, to have a safe space for physical growth, an environment for creative discovery, and an open door for tolerance and acceptance.”

On-Trend Kitchen and Bath Upgrades
By Desert Star Staff Kitchens and bathrooms remain among the top picks for homeowners looking to upgrade because their functional contributions to the household can’t be overstated and they typically provide high return on investment. If you’re considering a renovation project for either in-demand space, consider some of these on-trend ideas from Doug King, CR, MBA, owner of King Contracting, Inc. and president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Kitchen: Bigger functional spaces. Not only do many kitchen renovations result in added square footage, they also add practical features to make living and entertaining more comfortable and enjoyable. When it comes to physical space, a popular choice is removing or relocating walls to make the room larger. This added space can be instrumental in adding an island or peninsula for bar seating, which many homeowners view as a necessity when it comes to entertaining. Other features like icemakers, tall wine refrigerators and walk-in pantries are high on the frequent request list. Another growing trend is a kitchen designed for two, complete with a second full-size sink, dishwasher and microwave drawer, along with a larger island. Clever storage. Making the most of storage space has always been a top desire, and homeowners are getting increasingly clever about how to maximize their cabinetry. Drawer organizers are in high demand, along with pull-out waste baskets that hide recycling bins within. Another popular approach is large base cabinets with pivoting shelving mechanisms for storing large items like mixers and other taller countertop appliances. Making use of every inch of space is common; even the toe-kick area for drawers are

are adding all kinds of bells and whistles, and those features are increasingly attractive to homeowners. Upper-end appliances are

becoming more mainstream as homeowners discover features the more expensive models offer for ease of use and comfort. Larger freezer and column-style refrigerators are especially growing in popularity. Bathroom: Spa-like setting. One long-term trend that is still in top demand for the master bath is design that mimics a serene spa. This plays out in cooler colors like white, blues and grays. Glass tiles are taking on a bigger role with many homeowners using them as artistic focal points in showers or opting for pebble-like tiles that spill from walls onto the floor. Upscale practicality. Little touches that may have once gone unnoticed are now trending as opportunities to add elements of style. For example, curbless showers with offset lineal drains
are preferred to traditional centered circular versions. Similarly, homeowners are upping the ante with lighting such as fixtures integrated with fans and mirrors, and even below floating vanities for ambient light at night. One more place you might find lighting: on the bidet, which is also an increasingly hot addition in the master bath. A splash of tech. Whether it’s used to control smart features or simply add entertainment like TV or soothing music, technology has a permanent place on the list of bathroom trends. The available features make it easy to make a full escape from the daily grind of life. Find more inspiration and trending ideas for your next home improvement project at remodelingdoneright. com. Senate Urged to Save Postal Service, “Fabric of the Country”
By some estimates, the U.S. Postal Service could run out of funding by fall 2021. (AdobeStock) By Desert Star Staff Postal workers will be flooding phone lines today to urge Senate leaders
to act quickly to provide emergency funding for the U.S. Postal Service. The pandemic has only
exacerbated the financial woes of the USPS, which now is projecting a $13 billion loss for 2020. President of American
Postal Workers Union Cleveland Area Local 72 Daleo Freeman contends the Postal Service is the very fabric of the country. “The Postal Service, in terms of the American people, is one of the top agencies that is trusted,” says Freeman. “People depend on us for so many services, whether it be medicine, whether it be Social Security checks and the like.” During their Senate Day of Action, the American Postal Workers Union is calling on congressional leaders to pass legislation that would provide $25 billion in relief aid for the service. The postal service is the second biggest civilian employer in the U.S, with more than 630,000 employees. Freeman notes that during the pandemic, mail carriers have faced their own challenges as
essential front-line workers. “We’ve had our own members take ill to the COVID-19,” says Freeman. “It put a lot of stress on those because they’ve either had to take off due to a family member or themselves contracting the virus.” The Postal Service is funded solely through the sale of stamps and other services, and some estimates say funding could run out by the fall of 2021. There have been calls to privatize it, but critics contend that could shut out rural communities not served by other delivery services. Plato called it! Earth is made entirely out of cubes… at least on average By Desert Star Staff Plato conjectured that the universe was composed of particular geometric shapes and for Earth that was cubes. While that may sound ridiculous, a team of researchers has found that the Ancient Greek philosopher was on to something. A team of experts in math, geology and physics wanted to know what shapes remain when rocks break into pieces. Stunningly, they found that the average shape of rocks on Earth is a cube. Beginning with theoretical experiments, they found that when a three-dimensional shape is broken in two and the resulting pieces are broken again, in an average
sense, the shape of the fragments that are left over is a cube. Remarkably, the scientists found that the theory unites geological processes throughout the solar system. “It turns out that Plato’s conception about the element earth being made up of cubes is, literally, the statistical average model for real earth. And that is just mindblowing,” Douglas Jerolmack, a geophysicist at the University of Pennsylvania and one of the researchers, said. Plato was deeply interested in geometry, famously branding his research institute with the inscription: “Let no one ignorant of geometry enter here.” The researchers wonder if this
interest gave him a deep insight into the nature of Earth that has remained hidden for thousands of years. “One thing we’ve speculated in our group is that, quite possibly, Plato looked at a rock outcrop and, after processing or analyzing the image subconsciously in his mind, he conjectured that the average shape is something like a cube,” Jerolmack added. To test their theories in the real world the team measured thousands of rocks of all shapes, sizes and varieties. Amazingly, no matter where the rock came from or what it had been through, the cubic average was found to hold-up. The scientists said that discovering that an apparently
fundamental rule of nature was handed down across the millennia by an ancient
philosopher was an “intense but satisfying experience”.
He’s Back! Mike Tyson Returns to face fellow legend Roy Jones Jr.
By Desert Star Staff Mike Tyson will make www.desertstarweekly.com
his long-awaited ring return this September against
former unified champion Roy Jones Jr in California, at an event provisionallytitled “Frontline Battle.” The 51-year-old, who has thrilled fans by filming himself looking sharp and powerful during intense training sessions this year, is said to have agreed to meet 54-year-old Moscowbased Jones Jr in an exhibition fight on September 12. The California State Athletic Commission is thought to have sanctioned the veterans’ scrap at the state’s Dignity Health Sports Park, with pop stars including Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Future, The Weeknd, Pitbull and Marshmello providing live musical accompaniment, according to TMZ. Boxing editor Michael Benson posted a photo that purportedly showed the promotional poster for the fight, featuring the pair July 24, 2020
facing off above the tagline “everything is on the line.” Speaking earlier this week, Jones Jr, who spent almost a decade at cruiserweight before winning the WBU German version of a title in his last fight in 2018, hinted at the potential matchup. Tyson is likely to be the naturally heavier man. Still, he had not fought since 2005, when he made the second of two unsuccessful comeback attempts in a defeat to Kevin McBride that finished with him retiring halfway through the fight. Undefeated two-weight champion Andre Ward claimed earlier this year that Jones Jr had turned down a $40 million fight with Tyson in 2003. “There was a Tyson fight on the table, and I believe I’m accurate when I say that it was somewhere around $40 million guaranteed,”
ward told JRE Clips. “What I heard was Roy wanted more money. Roy somehow said, ‘No, the fight will be there down the road,’ and put his attention to Antonio Tarver, and the rest is history. “I wanted to see him fight Tyson and ride off into the sunset. One more and you’re out.” Dual Russian-US citizen Jones Jr has also been sparring heavily in recent weeks, as well as acting as an ambassador for Russian tourism and heritage, going hunting in Russia, and watching the Moscow Victory Day celebrations last month. According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, the California State Athletic Commission confirmed bout will take place with no fans. At the same time, the fighters will not wear amateur-style headgear for the exhibition bout.

Teachers Call on Congress to Fund Safely Reopening Schools
The average-size district could pay as much as $1.8 million to reopen all of its school buildings under the new safety guidelines established by health and education experts. (Julia M Cameron/Pexels) By Desert Star Staff As school districts scramble to reopen in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, educators in Colorado and across the nation say they’ll need more financial
support from the federal government to open safely. Educators say school districts will need more teachers, substitutes and custodians, more buses for social distancing, and personal
protection equipment. Denver-area high school teacher Emily Muellenberg says teachers are eager to see their students again, but many also are terrified. “We don’t know if we’re
going to have to purchase our own hand sanitizer,” she states. “What are kids going to be responsible for? “Does that mean that I should also go buy my own box of disposable masks just in case one of my students shows up without one?” New guidelines released by the American Federation of Teachers call for holding back on reopening schools in districts until the number of new COVID-19 cases drops for at least two consecutive weeks. The union also is calling for ramping up the capacity to test, trace and isolate each new case. President Donald Trump has threatened to withhold federal funding unless schools reopen, and points to Germany, Denmark and other countries where schools have reopened without problems. Muellenberg notes that, unlike in the U.S., people in countries where schools have reopened are following all health expert
recommendations. All students wear masks, and there’s enough funding for additional staff, protective gear and making sure classrooms are thoroughly cleaned. “Because they were able to get a handle on this virus so much earlier, not only did they send their kids back to school, but Denmark had, like, 11 new cases this week,” Muellenberg points out. “Well, we have 11 new cases on my block.” It’s projected to cost nearly $2 million for the average-size school district to reopen all of its school buildings under the new safety guidelines, according to analysis by leading education associations. Muellenberg says she hopes Congress will step up with the same kind of support given to banks and big corporations during the economic downturn, because she says the economy will take a lot longer to recover if parents have to stay home with their children.
Traveling This Summer? Take Proper COVID-19 Precautions By Desert Star Staff Summer is a cherished time in the Northwest with families going outside to enjoy the sun and warm weather. But the COVID-19 outbreak means folks need to keep some precautions in mind. Dr. Peter Barkett, an internal medicine physician with Kaiser Permanente in Silverdale, says people who are traveling should consider how the virus is spread and not put themselves in situations that feel uncomfortable. “Giving yourself a plan B or even a plan C so that if you get that kind of gnawing feeling or that voice in the back of your mind that says, ‘You know, this might be the safest thing,’ you have an idea of what else you can do,” he states. Barkett stresses large crowds are the biggest thing to avoid, and a gathering
where a lot of people aren’t wearing masks should be a red flag to avoid that place. Barkett also suggests traveling with hand sanitizer and a box of tissues, which can be helpful opening doors at rest stops, for example. Barkett points out the virus is spread through droplets. “If you’re in a confined space, then those droplets are more likely to hang around and increase the risk,” he explains. “If you’re outside and there’s a gentle breeze going, then that is a lower-risk environment.” Barkett says he’s seen COVID-19 and the stay-athome orders take a toll on his patients’ mental health and tells people to sleep well, eat healthy and exercise. He emphasizes the role going outdoors can play in keeping us mentally healthy during this pandemic. “It doesn’t mean that we need to stay indoors all summer, but with a little bit

Barkett says people still
should consider other summer dangers. He advises folks to wear sun protection, be safe in the water and with alcohol, and wear helmets while riding bicycles. Disclosure: Kaiser Health

Trump to Send Federal Anti-Crime Agents to Albuquerque
Albuquerque is one of at least three new cities with Democratic governors where President Donald Trump plans to send federal agents to “crackdown” on crime. (kunm.org) By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr announced yesterday
that 35 federal agents will be deployed to Albuquerque to help combat crime, despite no request for such help. At a news conference
yesterday, Trump said agents will also be sent cities in the Midwest. ACLU of New Mexico executive director Peter Simonson is
disturbed by the president’s possible motive. “I think we have to be really clear why Trump is doing this, and it’s not to protect public safety as he claims,” says Simonson. “It’s to provoke scenes of conflict and create the impression that the public needs him to restore law and order.” Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich called for the resignation of Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales, who attended the president’s press conference. The New Mexico Democrat claims Gonzales had invited the agents - who he called “the president’s storm troopers” - to Albuquerque. Gonzales has aggravated local officials for his opposition to body cameras. In a separate statement, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said if the Trump administration “seriously wants to assist local law enforcement with community
policing activities, the state would welcome the conversation.” The Democratic governor added that “agents sent to escalate tension in New Mexico communities would be flatly unacceptable.” Simonson says protests in Albuquerque over the George Floyd killing have primarily quieted down and doesn’t see the need for federal agents. “There’s no coordination with local agencies,” says Simonson. “The city of Albuquerque is just kind of a sitting duck waiting to see what this all means, and I think we can rest assured it really is politically motivated.” With his poll numbers falling ahead of the 2020 election, Trump is accelerating his effort to establish himself as a law-and-order president. Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, has approximately a half-million residents.
Trump Administration Works to Gut Payday-Lending Safeguard By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Trump administration released a proposal this week that would make it easier for banks and payday lenders to charge sky-high interest rates - despite California laws against predatory lending. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency wants to overturn the “true lender” doctrine and allow payday lenders to evade state interest-rate caps by listing a bank as the lender. Lauren Saunders, associate director of the National Consumer Law Center, says this will bring back rent-a-bank schemes and allow companies such as OppLoans and Loan Mart to charge 100% or even 200% in interest. “It’s outrageous at this time of economic crisis that the Trump administration, in action after action, is siding with predatory lenders charging outrageous interest
rates that just push people into debt and make it harder and harder for them to feed their family,” says Saunders. The feds say the change is necessary to help banks sell their loans, and manage liquidity and risk. This is the latest move by the administration that favors payday lenders. Recently the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau repealed rules that required payday lenders to make sure borrowers can afford to repay the loans. And the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation abolished its guidance to banks, limiting interest rates on small-dollar loans to 36% or less. Saunders said last year, California tightened up some loopholes to forbid interest rates of more than 100% on loans up to $10,000. “In reaction, three large payday lenders announced that they were going to ignore California law and team
The public has until Sept. 3 to weigh in on a proposal to loosen the rules on high-interest short-term loans. (Krosseel/Morguefile) up with banks to avoid the law because banks aren’t subject to state interestrate limits,” says Saunders. “They haven’t done that
yet, but this proposed rule would make it easier.” The public comment period on the proposed rule is open at regulations.gov until
September 3. The final rule, which comes out this fall, is likely to draw a legal challenge from consumer groups.
Action on Public-Lands Bills Urged During Latino Conservation Week By Desert Star Staff SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS, Calif. -- This week is the seventh annual Latino Conservation Week, and advocates for the environment are asking Congress to take action on several important bills. The Protecting Unique and Beautiful Landscapes by Investing in California, or PUBLIC Lands Act, would add

protections to public lands outside of Los Angeles, on the Central Coast and in the forests of northwest California. Christine Tamara, partnership engagement manager with Hispanic Access Foundation, said the San Gabriel Mountains in particular offer an important release for families who need a break from the asphalt jungle. “Being in SoCal, not everybody can afford to go
to Disneyland. But everybody can afford to visit their public lands,” Tamara said. “It is very cost-friendly for a large family to go and enjoy time together. And so having access to those public lands is super important for our community.” A second bill, the Great American Outdoors Act is set for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday. It would fully July 24, 2020
fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund and tackle a massive maintenance backlog at national parks. Jose Gonzalez, founder of Latino Outdoors, said Latinx communities have long valued public lands. “They are part of our cultural history,” Gonzalez said. “We have a connection to the land, and we can ensure that these continue
to stay protected.” Gonzalez noted access to nature is an important part of public health, wellness and recreation for urban populations especially during the pandemic when people tend to get isolated indoors. More information is available at latinoconservationweek.com.
