MH17 Plane Crash Ukrainian militia hands over MH17 flight recorders to Malaysia

By Desert Star Staff The Ukrainian militia have handed over to Malaysian experts the black boxes from the Malaysian Boeing-777 airliner that crashed in east Ukraine on July 17. The Donetsk People’s Republic’s (DPR) Prime Minister Aleksandr Boroday handed over the black boxes from the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 early on Tuesday. “Here they are, the black boxes,” Boroday told reporters. “According to the memorandum the Malaysian side must pass on

the boxes to the experts from the ICAO [International Civil Aviation Organization].” Both sides signed a document, finalizing the procedure. Colonel Mohamed Sakri of Malaysian National Security Council said that the two black boxes were “in good condition.” Earlier, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak said an agreement had been reached with militiamen at the scene of the crash that the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 black boxes will be handed over to Malaysian

authorities in Donetsk at 9pm Ukrainian time. The bodies of 282 victims are being moved by train before being flown to Amsterdam for repatriation. At least three refrigerated train carriages with bodies of those killed have departed from the town of Torez, near the site of the crash, to the town of Ilovaysk and are on their way to Donetsk. Malaysian aviation experts arrived in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, to investigate the crash Continues on Page 7

Swimwear on Runway Goes Sporty Chic By SUZETTE LABOY Associated Press MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) Surf’s up next summer. From rash guards to zipper-brief bottoms, sportychic looks made waves on the runway in Miami Beach for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, which celebrated its 10th year with more than a dozen shows ending Monday. The shows previewed summer 2015 swimwear. “Sport luxe is making a big impact into swimwear,” said Sue Di Chio, creative director of Suboo. She said customers are looking for more than triangle bikinis, and sportswear design “lends itself a lot to swimwear.” Prints and bright colors also will return next year, along with mesh, high-waist bottoms and laser-cut designs. DOLORES CORTES Dolores Cortes cited a mix of tribal and contemporary inspiration with laminated fabrics, glass beads and braid structures. Black-andwhite bikinis were paired with oversized gold-plated bracelets and earrings with 3-D animal

details. Other designs included multi-colored maillots with open backs and sides; a one-piece tube-top in a textured white design and zipper front; and a gold pantsuit. Showstoppers were bikinis made of tortoise shell. WILDFOX Party like it’s 1999 was the theme of the WILDFOX Swim show, with some models sporting Reebok high-tops and fanny packs. “Wild Thing” was printed on a tank bikini top paired with a bottom that had a paw scratch on the back. A red one-piece read “This Bod’s For You” with high-cut sides. The Barbie logo appeared on a soft pink one-piece and a blue terry-cloth bikini that tied in front. Crowd favorites included

a pastel-colored one-piece with pink belt and a bikini covered in oversized flowers. WE ARE HANDSOME Jeremy and Katinka Somers are the designers behind this Australian label. Prints included hummingbirds intertwined with pineapples in a kaleidoscope grid; mirrored cheetahs in red and blue; the brand’s signature big cat print; and maps, sails and palm trees reflecting the designers’ travel lifestyle. A cropped rash guard in bright yellow sported a tropical print on the back, racer bikinis and leggings paired with mesh tops. Bikini-clad models even held a live slithering snake. Male models sported trunks in prints.

TORY BURCH The Tory Burch swimwear was inspired by the sunbleached palette of Milton Avery, an American modern painter. Laidback looks included surf shirts, dresses and tunics, and button-down shirts that can be worn over bathing suits. A shortsleeved rash guard included a floral print called “Red Pepper

Issy” with short ruffles along the collar. Accessories included oversized marbled sunglasses and perforated leather shoes. Fan favorite: A white leather bag with long fringe. MIKOH Inspired by the travels of sisters Kalani and Oleema Miller, MIKOH opened with Tahitian dancers wearing custom pieces from the surf collection made from coated neoprene. There were sleek designs (neoprene maillot with a halter-style top) and new prints (crashing white water, palm trees, a Samoan print) and colors (rich greens and reds, coral, turquoise and neutrals). Bikinis were paired with multi-string and laser-cut bottoms.

MARA HOFFMAN SWIM A jungle-warrior theme at Mara Hoffman Swim offered bright colors and prints inspired by Guatemala. “The textiles are just incredible,” she said. Standouts included a onepiece rash guard swimsuit with a colorful print on the front and black and white checkered print on the sleeves, and a cropped, long-sleeved rash guard paired with high-waist bottoms. Other looks included cut-out onepieces with intricate beading, and black mesh pieces (bikini and tight knee-length dress) with sunburst texture. MAAJI SWIMWEAR Maaji Swimwear went to the races with looks inspired by horse riding and greyhounds. The models sported racing caps while holding whips. The “Royal Riders” collection included bustier bikini tops printed with plum greyhounds and red gingham; boy-short bottoms printed with fuchsia roses and orange horses; a crop top with cap sleeves for a surfer look printed with pastel envelopes and gray ropes; and a crop rash guard printed with orange horses and blue dots. Short trunks for men included similar prints and colors.

an animal print pant, yellow tropical blouse tied around the model’s waist, and matching visor. LULI FAMA Inspired by the ‘80s TV show “Miami Vice,” Luli Fama included pastels and neons along with tropical patterns and prints. The line is known for sexy, skimpy bottoms (ruched Brazilian cuts, cheeky bottoms and thongs), which caught the attention of singer LeAnn Rimes. “I like butts and they do a really good butt,” she said after the show, which she attended with husband Eddie Cibrian.

Suboo swimwear included zippers and mesh paneling; rash guards and high-waist bottoms; and bomber jackets not typically seen on swim runways, including a printed jacket outlined in black, and a white mesh jacket. 6 SHORE ROAD More high-waist bottoms were seen at 6 Shore Road, with colorful prints and thick side strings. Rash guards also made the runway along with colorful oversized bags, pantsuits and black mesh cover-ups. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com

CM CIA.MARITIMA The longest-running show at MBFWSwim is CM Cia. Maritima. “It’s a challenge because you have more competitors,” designer Benny Rosset said, adding that people used to say “bikini is not fashion,” but that’s changed. Among the looks: a long-sleeved yellow and pink orchid body suit with side cutouts; orange sunset print crop top in long sleeves paired with an orange Cozumel print pencil skirt; an orange palm zipper brief bottom (surfer style); and yellow tropical one-piece with July 25, 2014

When Nat discovers a magical library in a dusty old attic he makes friends with Alice in Wonderland and characters from “The Jungle Book,” “Pinocchio,” Puss in Boots,” “Jack and the Beanstock” and more, but he soon learns that his friends are in danger and the only way he can save them is for him to learn to read an ancient spell that will keep them alive for generations of children to come. On July 22 the Smithsonian Channel brings “Shark Collection” to DVD which allows you to dive in for a look under the skin and into the mind of the ocean’s perfect predator. It is man vs. shark, but who is the real predator? The 3 episodes from the TV series include: “Shark Girl,” which follows activist Madison Stewart’s mission to save the creature she loves by changing people’s minds about sharks. In “Great White Code Red,” two scientists dissect a shark to reveal what drives this fearsome animal and “Death Beach” investigates an abnormal string of shark attack off a South African coast. Not rated. Running time is approximately 138 minutes. Sharks are universally feared, but also widely misunderstood, and suddenly they are becoming endangered. This DVD will hopefully change public opinion about sharks before it’s too late.

The Golden Door Reinvents the Spa Experience

Continued from Page 1 private guestroom with a daily in room massage among other amenities included in the weekly rate. Add to this recipe for wellness their lavish 3- acre organic garden where you are serenaded with the soft sound of happy honey bees, daily skin care sessions, herbal wraps, and if you have time, a specialty massage in the Yama Koya ( mountain hut). Surrounded by citrus, olive and avocado groves without the urban interference of traffic, the ambiance is “heavenly” according to a comment in their guest book. Farm to table cuisine is the specialty and prepared daily under the guidance of Executive Chef, Greg Frey, Jr .. Our lunch featured lake caught salmon resting near a steamed bold red heirloom tomato. Beyond was mesmerizing, until dessert took over, fresh baked glutenfree cookies carefully placed on a stylish Japanese plate. The background music was provided by the rustling of oak trees and soft mountain breezes.

Absent of any intrusion from the outside world, there are issues here you need not to deal with, for example. A complete spa wardrobe is provided including sandals, sun hat and fanny pack for hikes. It’s all about the details at the side, leaving your mind free to fully participate in Golden Door exclusives from a weekly cooking class to a lantern lit labyrinth walk. Local marketing guru, Janet Newcomb recently remarked, “The newly expanded and enlightened Golden Door is setting the standard for conscientious stewardship of the land as well as for the physical and metaphysical needs of their guests. The beauty and tranquility, with hundred-yearold trees, an organic garden, and quiet hiking paths will lift your spirits and restore your equilibrium.” For information www. thegoldendoor.com or 800 424 0777. S P O RT S POWER makes Fifth Straight SCCBL Title Appearance BY DANIEL MARINELLI

PALM SPRINGS – After 16 leagues, and 42 games total, the Palm Springs POWER has clinched first place in the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League (SCCBL) and will be headed to the conference championship for the fifth straight year. The new-to-the-league Inland Valley Pirates (25-6 Overall, 12-4 in SCCBL) did exceptionally well in their inaugural season, finishing with an identical league record to the POWER (34-8 Overall, 12-4 in SCCBL). Team San Diego (23-21 Overall, 7-0 in SCCBL) finished in third, rounding out the final playoff spot. By defeating Team San Diego in a one-game playoff on Monday, the scrappy Pirates team advanced to play the POWER in the SCCBL championship series. Unlike previous years, winning the championship will not be a cakewalk for the dynastic POWER. The Pirates were a more than formidable opponent this year. The team that calls Cal Poly Pamona home has a competitive roster, equipped with the pitching needed to win a series against the Palm Springs Stadium residents. The teams split two-game series in 2014, meaning that the SCCBL’s final hurrah should be a dozy. Both POWER losses to Inland Valley came at the hands of pitcher Andrew Alverez (5-0, 1.17 ERA, 30 Ks). In his victories over the POWER, Alverez combined to pitch 16.1 innings, allowed five runs and struck out four. Lengthy ace Morgan Earman (4-1, .88 ERA, 39 Ks) is a sure

start in one of the games for the POWER; Brooks Kriske (5-0, 1.75 ERA, 36 Ks) is likely to take to the mound in the other game. A disconcerting fact, however, Alverez already bested Earman earlier this year. Thus, the Pirates’ go-to pitcher will likely be the favorite in whichever game he pitches. Back in June, Kriske won the only game he pitched against the Pirates. Because Alverez will likely

face off against Earman, Kriske will be going head-to-head against a lesser pitcher, and will probably to take the game he pitches from the SCCBL second-place finishers. Despite having to face Alverez, the POWER remains confident. “I think we’re going to win out,” Said Mitch Bluman, who got the save in Earman’s victory over the Pirates. “I mean I expect to, there’s no reason not to, were the best team every night we go out

there.” If the they defeat the Pirates, the POWER play the winner of the Orange County Collegiate Baseball League championship in the So Cal World Series. The So Cal World Series pairs the winner of the SCCBL On Tuesday, the POWER traveled to Cal Poly Pamona to start the best-of-three championship series with the Pirates. On Wednesday, the

POWER and Pirates head back to Palm Springs to conclude the series at Palm Springs Stadium. If the teams split the first two games, a third game will be held at Palm Springs Stadium on Thursday. Wednesday and Thursday’s (if necessary) games start at 7:05 pm. For more on sports in the Coachella Valley, follow @ dsmarine7 on Twitter.

C.O.D. Holds Football Camp for Youth

By Angela Monroe PALM DESERT -- The College of the Desert football program is working with valley coaches and youth football players for it’s first annual Roadrunner Football Camp held at the campus. Young football players from across the valley are getting the chance of a lifetime to work with college players and coaches to hone their football skills and build character. The COD head coach, Jack Steptoe, was on the field with his coaches and players to train the youth and coaches from the community. Everyone on the field volunteered their time to provide offense and defense learning opportunities for players and parents. Courtesy of KMIR www.kmir.com
