Danielle Brooks new EP, “Four.”

By Desert Star Staff Danielle Brooks just released her debut EP, FOUR. The EP includes the new original song “Seasons,” which is featured in the

final season of her critically acclaimed and Award-winning Netflix series Orange Is The New Black, which premieres this Friday, July 26. The GRAMMY Award-

winner brings her soulful and thoughtful voice to these original songs. The EP is a reflection and a reminder to never forget who you are, where you’ve come from.

Remember those who have held your hand along the way, and to always stay in gratitude. “My EP is four stories that reflect my being,” says Danielle. “While I was at Juilliard, I had a director who gave me the wonderful gift of defining the word ‘being’: a person is a complete and perfect state, lacking no essential characteristics, excellent, God-like. And I realized that this EP is exactly what its’ supposed to be, it’s truthful and comes from my heart.” Danielle says of the song “Seasons,” featured on FOUR, “I wrote the song for my Orange girls and built the song’s story by trying to incorporate as many of their names that I could. We are a family, and this song is my gift to them in honor of the love they have shown me and lifelong sisterhood we built together.” The four-track EP also includes “Black Woman,” which was released earlier this year, and plays homage to the power of being a beautiful, strong black woman. The R&B/Soul track song has a universal message about overcoming self-doubt and celebrating the peace we all find when we accept ourselves

Bill in ID to ‘Oppose’ Sharia Law Among Copy-Paste Legislation

By Desert Star Staff BOISE, Idaho – Does this bill sound familiar? An investigation of state legislation across the country finds Idaho is one of many states where identical bills aimed at preventing Sharia law in courtrooms has been introduced. A joint investigation by the Arizona Republic, Center for Public Integrity and USA Today finds “American Laws for American Courts” bills were introduced 40 times in 17 states over the past decade with text coming from the right-wing think tank Center for Security Policy. Dustin Gardiner, a reporter who was part of the investigation, says this copy-

paste type of legislation raises concerns about transparency and whether legislators are addressing an actual problem. “Are they just introducing things because an interest group has asked them to and have, they really done their research?” he states. “And it also raises the question of whether the bills they’re running are a response to organic concerns, and that was one of the criticisms with the anti-Sharia bill in Idaho.” Former state Rep. Eric Redman introduced the bill three times starting in 2016, but it never passed. Critics say lawmakers were targeting Muslims with the bills and the Council on American-Islamic Relations called it “governmentsanctioned Islamophobia.” Redman did not respond to a request for comment. The former lawmaker has criticized Sharia but has said the bill does not specifically name Islam in its text, instead proposing to prohibit “foreign laws.” No Idaho judge has made a decision based on foreign laws. For most Muslims, Sharia is a traditional code of conduct governing how to pray and

For their “copy, paste, legislate” investigation, Gardiner and his colleagues used software to analyze state legislation from the past eight years. For Film Fun Say SHAZAM! DC Comics first introduced the world to a young teenager with superpowers back in the late 1930s. He is now back in Warner Bros. fun-filled screen adventure “Shazam!” Billy Batson (Asher Angel of TV’s “Andi Mack) is a street smart 14-year-old who has been in many foster homes. The latest is run by a caring couple (Marta Milans of TV’s “Killer Women” and Cooper Andrews of TV’s “The Walking Dead”) who have five other kids in their care. Soon Billy is befriended by Freddie (Jack Dylan Grazer of “It”) who is obsessed with superheroes. But before the main story begins, there is a prologue where we meet two youngsters. One is a boy who desperately wants to be as unique to his dad as his big brother is. Instead, he’s belittled by both of them. When he matures, the boy becomes Dr. Thaddeus Sivanna (Mark Strong of the “Kingsman” movies), who is the villain of the piece. The prologue then cuts to

a small boy at a carnival with his teenage mother. When they become separated, she never tries to find him so young Billy is placed in foster care. At this point, the main story begins. At school, Freddie, who walks with a crutch, is bullied by two brothers. When Billy tries to rescue Freddie, he is quickly pursued by the two older boys. To escape them, he jumps into a subway car that takes him to the realm of an old wizard who is looking for a pure spirit so he can transfer his powers to him. With the magic word “SHAZAM!” the wizard transforms Billy into a man (Zachary Levi of TV’s “Chuck” and Disney’s “Tangled.”) This is where the real fun begins. Levi is able to give the adult superhero the innocence and sensibilities of a kid whenever Billy shouts out “Shazam.” Billy reveals his superhero side to Freddie, who is delighted. At this point, the two boys try to discover what powers Billy actually has. This is where the real fun begins.

By Desert Star Staff A Republican group has distanced itself from an altered movie poster that appeared on its Facebook page, depicting four progressive congresswomen as ‘The Jihad Squad’. The post sparked outrage

among local Democrats. The now deleted post appeared on the Illinois Republican County Chairman’s Association Facebook page on Friday evening. The image is a doctored poster from the 2013 film ‘Gangster Squad’, with the faces of Reps. Alexandria

Levi is adorable as he finds he can fly and shoot lightning bolts from his fingertips. He also becomes famous when Freddie puts his actions on Facebook and YouTube. This alerts doctor Sivanna who wants these powers for himself alone. Levi, as the manly hero who really is a kid inside literally, steals the movie, which is a good thing. However, the film directed by David F.

Sandberg, with a screenplay by Henry Gayden, could have been even better if some of the lengthy battle scenes were shorter in duration. But overall, “Shazam!” is loads of fun for adults and kids. “Shazam!” has a running time of 132 minutes and is rated PG13 for intense sequences of action and language. “Shazam!” is now

available on Blu-ray and DVD and contains more than 90 minutes of supercharged special features. They include an exclusive motion comic: ‘Superhero Hooky’ as well as an alternate opening and ending plus deleted scenes. And that’s not all. There’s a gag reel, audition footage, Shazam’s backstory and an on set feature with Zachary Levi.

Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) photoshopped onto the protagonists. “Jihad Squad,” the poster reads, with the tagline: “Political Jihad is their game. If you don’t agree with their socialist ideology, you’re racist.” It is unclear who created the poster, which circulated on social media for quite some time before an unknown GOP operative thought it would be a good idea to post it on the association’s official page. After the story broke in the local media on Sunday, the outraged Cook County Democratic Party demanded

an apology and that the post be taken down, even though it had already been deleted by then. The Democrats slammed it as “a racist and inflammatory attack” that “perpetuates the recent attacks by President [Donald] Trump.” The Illinois branch of the Republican Party was quick to distance itself from the post, saying it was “unauthorized” and promising to tighten up the “internal review process.” Local GOP leaders condemned the post, but also took the opportunity to criticize ‘The Squad’ for their “socialist policies” and “anti-Semitic language,” the Republicans’ usual line

of attack against them. Trump has faced accusations of racism for tweeting that the four congresswomen should “go back” to their own “broken and crime infested” homelands and later allowing the crowd at a rally to chant “send her back” for 13 seconds in reference to Omar. Taking heat from both Democrats and Republicans, Trump remained unruffled by the accusations and took another swipe at ‘The Squad’ on Sunday, demanding they “apologize to America (and Israel) for the horrible (hateful) things they have said.”

‘Jihad Squad’ meme with Omar & co. on Illinois GOP page angers Democrats

Immigrant-Rights Supporters Call for Volunteers to Monitor ICE Activity By Desert Star Staff Arrests and deportations of immigrants by ICE agents are on the rise, and the Wyoming Rapid Response Network is looking for more volunteers to help families understand their rights and to connect with attorneys and other resources. This Saturday, the network is offering free training in Casper. Antonio Serrano, an organizer with the ACLU of Wyoming, says communities across the state feel under attack, but there is a way for individuals to make a difference. “We need people to stand up now more than ever,” he stresses. “I think people just kind of get comfortable in their bubbles and we don’t see what’s happening to other families around us. “There’s a serious need for dedicated volunteers, for people who care and are ready to put in some work.” More information is available on the group’s Facebook page. Search for Wyoming Rapid Response Network.

After the trainings, so called confirmers will be dispatched to observe and document possible ICE incidents and help keep other family members up to date if people are taken into custody. Supporters of ICE detentions and deportations maintain that because immigrants entered the country without proper documentation, raids are justified. Serrano counters that volunteers actually are helping to ensure that people get fundamental constitutional protections. He says due process, including serving warrants signed by a judge before ICE can legally enter a home, and other constitutional protections apply to every person, regardless of his or her immigration status. Serrano says while he knows everyone might not see his group’s efforts in a positive light, he invites people who disagree to have a conversation. “I’m enforcing the Constitution,” he asserts. “Everyone is entitled to have

Mueller’s testimony was a major anti-climax.

By Desert Star Staff Democrats expected Russiagate fireworks from former special counsel Robert Mueller’s long-awaited testimony on Capitol Hill but were once again disappointed, witnessing only the last fizzles of a dying conspiracy theory. Many in the media had massively hyped Mueller’s appearance, believing that his confident and clear testimony would make for must-watch television. Yet, when Mueller finally appeared, he struggled to answer questions, constantly asked committee members to repeat themselves. He bumbled through the answers he did give (which were not particularly interesting and shed little new light on the Russiagate debacle). Watching the hearing was like watching paint dry – on a wall you’ve painted one-hundred times before. Democrats must finally be realizing that Mueller will never reveal himself to be the Trump-slaying superman they’d hoped for Better things to do? “It’s outside my purview,” “I can’t get into it,” “I refer again to the report.” Those were Robert Mueller’s goto answers throughout Wednesday’s hearing, during which it was clear that he had no interest in being there. Mueller appeared tired and dizzy and showed little enthusiasm for answering a barrage of questions from the House Judiciary Committee – nor for entertaining any of the elaborate grandstanding coming from both sides of the aisle. Of course, his reluctance was no surprise; the investigator had previously admitted he

did not want to testify and believed that his 450-page report should have been regarded as his only testimony. ‘No collusion’ deja-vu In his opening statement, Mueller confirmed (yet again) that his “extensive investigation” completed over two years “did not establish” that members of the 2016 Trump campaign conspired with Russia to steal the presidential election. “I do not intend to summarize or describe the results of our work in a different way in the course of my testimony today,” he said. It was a warning to Democrats in particular; perhaps Mueller’s way of encouraging them to abandon any lingering hope that he would suddenly rip into Trump in some newly dramatic fashion, calling for his impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors. Mueller also confirmed, once and for all, that he was not curtailed or hindered in his investigation by Trump and was essentially allowed to conduct it as he saw fit – another ‘ouch’ moment for Democrats. Not charged, but not exonerated? Pleasing to Democrats, however, will have been Mueller’s straightforward answer when asked if Trump was correct in his characterization of the results of the report as a “total exoneration.” “No,” Mueller quickly responded. Yet, here again, there is no new information. Everyone already knew that Mueller had refused to make any determination on the question of obstruction of justice and that the process had not “exonerated” Trump fully in this regard.

The issue of Trump’s claimed exoneration became one of the more exciting moments of an otherwise dull hearing when Texas Republican John Ratcliffe asked Mueller if the US Department of Justice had any policy that allows him to say that a person who is not charged is also “not exonerated.” When asked if he could think of an example, besides Trump, where “an investigated person was not exonerated because their innocence was not conclusively determined,” Mueller could not think of any, saying this was a “unique situation.” Forgetful Mueller It wasn’t merely that Mueller was seemingly disinterested in the whole charade; the stranger discovery of the day was that on many occasions during questioning, he appeared to have trouble recalling some basic facts from his report. Granted, the entire report is hundreds of pages long – no one could be expected to remember it all in crystalclear detail – but Mueller’s grasp of certain elements left a lot to be desired. On one occasion, he was unable to recall who’d provided one of the most reportedon and dramatic quotes in its pages (Trump’s alleged response to Mueller’s own appointment: “This is the end of my presidency. I’m f*cked.”) It wasn’t just reportspecific facts that Mueller failed to recall, either; he couldn’t even remember, when asked, which president had first appointed him to the position of US attorney general. It’s only a matter of time before

Trump starts calling him ‘Sleepy Robert’ on Twitter. Collusion or conspiracy? So shaky was he on some of the details, committee members inadvertently caught Mueller contradicting pieces of the report in his spoken testimony. Asked by Georgia Republican Doug Collins if “collusion and conspiracy” are “synonymous terms,” in the “colloquial context,” Mueller said no. Yet, in his report – as Collins swiftly pointed out – he stated that “even as defined in legal dictionaries, collusion is largely synonymous with conspiracy.” Rebuffing Democrats’ efforts It was back to the question of obstruction of justice when Democrat Hakeem Jeffries of New York began questioning Mueller, pressuring him to agree that Trump had committed

obstruction. On Twitter, many excitedly claimed that Jeffries was masterfully “establishing” that the “three elements” of an obstruction of justice charge were present – but he failed spectacularly when Mueller ultimately responded: “I’m not supportive of that analytical charge.” Impeachment-favoring Democrats did their best to force Mueller into agreeing with their personal characterizations of his report, but he repeatedly rebuffed their valiant efforts. Their ultimate goal was to nudge him into saying something which could be construed as his support for impeachment proceedings – but no matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get him there. To steal the analysis of MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, for Democrats, “on optics, this was a disaster.”

becomes the oldest Main Event champion in 20 years since Noel Furlong won the title in 1999 at age 62. He also becomes the third Iranian-born WSOP Main Event champion and the first in 27 years, joining Mansour Matloubi in 1990 and Hamid Dastmalchi in 1992. Ensan captured his very first World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet and the top prize in gaming’s richest and most prestigious event after a three-day finale telecast live on ESPN that concluded at 1:24 am in the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino’s Amazon Ballroom on Wednesday morning. He had zero previous flows of cash at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas heading into this event and was playing the WSOP Main Event for the very first time. He had cashed once at WSOP Europe in 2017 for 2,824 euros and also won a WSOP ring at a WSOP International Circuit event at King’s Casino

in Rozvadov, Czech Republic, near his home country in 2017, which earned him 184,812 euros. His total live tournament winnings sat at $2,673,206 leading into this year’s WSOP Main Event, and he managed to nearly quadruple that with his signature win in the 2019 WSOP Main Event. Born in Ahvaz, Iran, Ensan moved to Germany at the age of 25, where he has resided since. “I am so happy. I am so happy. I thank my fans at home in Germany, also in Iran and my fans, my buddies here,” said a smiling Ensan after the event. “This is the best feeling in my life. Unbelievable! I am so happy; I’m here with the bracelet in hand. What can I say?” The runner up was 32-year-old Dario Sammartino of Naples, Italy now living in Vienna, Austria. Sammartino entered the final table as the most accomplished player but was the short stack when play began Tuesday night. He managed to surge to the chip lead a couple of times, but couldn’t ultimately finish off Ensan. Sammartino does

earn the largest payday of his career, a hefty $6,000,000 for his second-place finish. He had more than $8,000,000 in tournament winnings entering this tournament, including 35 previous WSOP cashes for more than $3.3 million, and now adds the best finish by an Italian-born player in Main Event history. On the final hand of this 11-day poker game – the 301st hand of the final table -- in the wee hours at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Ensan was dealt, pocket kings and after a flop of ten of spades, two of diamonds and six of spades, and a nine of clubs on the turn, Sammartino check-raised, putting his remaining 140,000,000 chips in holding an eight and four of spades, drawing to a flush and a straight. But the river was a Queen of clubs, giving Ensan the victory. It was the first time in history pocket kings was the winning hand in the WSOP Main Event. Heads up play lasted 101 hands with Ensan holding 279,800,000 chips at the beginning while

Sammartino started with 235,000,000. The end came on hand number 301. Rounding out the final table was: 4th place: Garry Gates, 37, from Henderson, Nevada, $3,000,000 5th place: Kevin Maahs, 27, from Chicago, Illinois, $2,200,000 6th place: Zhen Cai, 35, from Lake Worth, Florida, $1,850,000 7th place: Nick Marchington, 21, from Hornchurch, United Kingdom, $1,525,000 8th place: Timothy Su, 25, from Boston, Massachusetts, $1,250,000 9th place: Milos Skrbic, 30, from Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, $1,000,000 The 2019 WSOP has attracted a record 187,298 entrants this year, exceeding last year’s record of 123,865 by an astounding 51 percent. A record prize pool has been awarded – more than $293 million. This year’s WSOP featured participants from more than 100 different nations.

All’s Well That Ensan Well By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS– Iranian-born and longtime German resident Hossein Ensan has closed out a historic 50thrunning of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) by capturing the world championship in the WSOP Main Event (officially Event #73) and the massive $10,000,000 first-place prize and the diamond-encrusted World Series of Poker gold bracelet. Though he started the tournament on July 5 with just 60,000 in chips, he ended up capturing all 514,140,000 of them, by outlasting the second-largest Main Event field in history – 8,569 entrants. The $10,000 buy-in WSOP Main Event is globally recognized as poker’s world championship and this year was a special edition, the 50th running. The event created the second-largest prize pool ever -- $80,548,600, of which the final nine players split up more than $30 million of it. The 55-year-old Ensan
