ISIS Kills Priest
Jacques Hamel, the 84-year-old Catholic priest slain in an ISIS attack in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, France.
‘Killers chanting in Arabic film priest’s throat-slitting’: Details about French church attack By Desert Star Staff An attacker that stormed a French church and slit an 84-year-old priest’s throat has been identified as Adel Keramiche. He was known to police and had travelled to Syria several times. A witness says the killers videoed the act while chanting in Arabic. Speaking anonymously, a nun told Le Figaro that the terrorists rushed in suddenly. “I left when they began to attack Father Jacques. I do not
even know if they realized that I was leaving,” she said. Another nun, Sister Danielle, told BFM TV that the attackers “recorded themselves.” “They did a sort of sermon around the altar, in Arabic. It’s a horror,” she said. Here is what is known about the atrocious murder so far. Attackers: Police say two people were involved in the attack. According to French prosecutor Francois Molin, one of
the attackers was named as Adel Keramiche, 19. The identity of the second perpetrator still remains unknown. According to Le Figaro, one of the assailants had vowed to commit such an act beforehand. “He talked about Islam and things like this should be done,” Le Figaro quotes a man, whose identity was not disclosed, as saying. “He told me – I’ll commit an attack on a church,” the man went on to say.
French channel BMF TV cited one of the witnesses as saying that both assailants spoke Arabic. Weapons and location: Police say the 84-year old priest was killed with a knife. One of the attackers was found to have been carrying an explosive belt made of aluminum foil and three knives, Molin said. Another also carried a weapon made of aluminum and a backpack containing a fake explosive device, he added.
The killing took place in the small town of St-Etienne-duRouvray, a suburb of the city of Rouen in northern France. French Leexpress reports that the town had been on the radar of authorities in 2014, when several people were arrested there for attempting to travel to Syria. Philippe de Villers, a former French presidential candidate, told RT that the fact that a place Continues on Page 6

This small intimate theatre brings so much to our valley. The first in the series was Peter Sprague and Leonard Patton on Sept. 21. Josh Nelson brought his amazing talent at the piano on Friday Sept 22 and Carl Saunders, and his quartet thrilled fans on Saturday night.
What better way to spend a hot summer night than to sit in a friendly setting and air conditioned theatres listening to such accomplished artists perform. I was fortunate to be able to listen to the talented fingers of Josh Nelson on the piano. He sounded like he had two extra hands while he played. His love for the movies spilled over into
his music. He played tunes from older TV shows and movies he loved. He joked that he must have been born in the wrong generation as his love of music from that era dictates his artistry. Josh played his interpretation of songs from movies like, Laura, China Town and Love letters, to name a few. Josh has won many awards for his compositions and performances during his career. Talents like Jeff Olson accompanied Josh on the Drums and Bill Saitta on the bass.
Siatta is also co-producing this summer’s Music Series. Both musicians have worked with famous artists in many different genres. The three musicians filled the theatre area with fantastic music. Jazz fans walked away from the concert fulfilled with the artistry of the night’s music. The basic music a rhythm, a mixed beats in a jazz format and a lot of original tunes. Josh sang one song, which was an original piece he wrote from a dream. The lyrics and song, How You Loved Me On

Avoiding the Long Term Care Nightmare by using a Simple Solution
By Janice Gough M a n y Americans cannot afford the cost of L o n g - Te r m Care Insurance (LTCI), nor do they think about purchasing a Critical Illness policy. A stand-alone product, they may be simply too costly for one’s budget. While most of these people have worked and established retirement savings, at retirement, they will roll those funds into a selfdirected Individual Retirement Plan, and that is almost always an annuity. illness occurs. Just like a fully insured Long-Term Care plan, a rider will trigger the benefits if you cannot perform 2 of the six activities of Daily Living (ADLs). The ADLs are Ambulating, Bathing, Continence, Dressing, Eating, and Transferring & Toileting. Cognitive Impairment is a single trigger. The cost of these riders can vary between companies, however, is less than 1 percent based upon the assets under management. Thus if your annuity value was $ 500,000, the cost of an LTC rider would cost $500 per annum‌ a relatively small amount to pay to receive a payout of 2-3 times over your annuity savings. When one faces this crisis, it is a blessing to have expert advice and counseling. The additional
benefits offered through having this protection are access to eldercare resources, referral and consultation services, and discounted long-term care services from a specified group of providers. With the enactment of the Pension Protection Act of 2006, these new hybrid products that combine annuities with longterm care were introduced. Beginning in 2010, tax-free distribution status was given to both annuity assets and long-term care rider benefits used for a qualified long-term care purpose. Under prior law, withdrawals taken from the annuity to pay the long-term care premiums were taxable and subject to a 10-percent penalty prior to age 59.5. Insurance
carriers have also developed true insurance benefits for longterm care, such as riders who double the lifetime withdrawal payment of a GLWB when the contract owner is confined in a nursing home. The Stand Alone Living Benefit Rider (SALB) was introduced in 2008. The SALB provides protection similar to that of the GLWB while adding flexibility with the various types of assets that can be protected. It is designed to be attached to a balanced fund by endorsement, primarily for use of an option in an employer-sponsored retirement plan. Development of the market for these products has been slow due to ambiguity around the fiduciary responsibilities of the plan sponsor in selecting
an insurance carrier, and issues around portability that makes it difficult for the plan participant to move the benefit when changing employers. Based on the analysis by the Department of Aging stating that 2/3 of those over 65, will require Long-Term Care after the age of 65, having this plan can be a blessing for you and your family. Border Protection – Observing Boundaries in the HOA By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Advising associations was for many years occasionally quite stressful, as I would sometimes advise clients which would reject that advice. However, one of the defining moments in my HOA law career was when I realized that is my role is to provide the best advice, and not to take on the obligation of compelling the association to follow my advice. It is not my home, and I do not vote. Once I learned my boundary, the role became less stressful. Here below are the fundamental general boundaries toward more healthy operation of common interest associations. Managers – Managers manage the association, giving important advice which helps boards comply with the Business Judgment Rule. Managers do not make decisions, except when the board specifically delegates something to the manager to handle. Managers stay out of association politics – managers, as any association service provider, may not meddle in the selection of directors. Boards – The board of directors is the association’s decision-making body. It DIRECTS the management and other HOA vendors. Boards should not co-manage the HOA, but should allow the manager to carry out the board’s directives. Officers – in non-profit mutual benefit corporations, individual officers (even Presidents) have little power. They have certain responsibilities under the bylaws, but sometimes confuse their nonprofit officer role with the more powerful role given officers in for-profit corporations. Individual directors- A single director, no matter how intelligent, wise, aggressive, and vocal, still only has one vote. Therefore the individual director has no power -the power rests in the board. Well-intentioned directors often
take on responsibilities which are not theirs, usurping the board’s role. Other directors may call that person a “renegade because that director takes actions which should be reserved for the board, such as instructing the manager or other vendors, or making unauthorized contract commitments for the association. Committees – Except for architectural committees, most committees are only advisory. Whether established by the governing documents or by the board, committees typically are assigned an ongoing important subject. Committees advise the board by issuing a “report, hopefully written, suggesting certain board actions. Committees do not make commitments to association vendors, and their meetings are less formal. Boards should avoid doing committee work in the board meetings, just as the committee avoids doing board work. Committee members – Oftentimes, a particular committee member is extremely interested and active in a particular committee, but steps outside their role by speaking for the committee when the committee
had not met. A committee of one is not a committee! Individual homeowners – Many homeowners feel they have the right to participate in board deliberations as if they were elected directors, even though they were not elected, are not held responsible for their input, and have not reviewed the meeting packet prepared by the manager. Listen, and let the board deliberate. Another other common homeowner boundary issue regards service providers, as homeowners often incorrectly feel they have the right to tell the landscaper or other vendor how to perform the vendor’s job. One of the great benefits of association

What moved Jennifer Aniston to tears
By Lisa Respers France CNN A soft-spoken teen touched Jennifer Aniston’s heart over the weekend. The actress was in Italy on Saturday at the Giffoni Film Festival to receive a lifetime achievement award, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Giffoni is one of Europe’s largest film festivals for children and teens. One young person in particular reportedly moved Aniston to tears. During a question and answer session, a young woman asked the former “Friends” star if she has ever experienced waking up in the morning and not knowing who she was. The star wiped her eyes as she told the audience, “There are not enough fingers and toes in this entire room to count how
many times that moment has happened to me.” “We’re all human beings at the end of the day, whether we’re a waitress or a baker or a student or whatever we are, at the end of the day you kind of hit walls and think I kind of can’t go any farther,” Aniston said. “Or this is too much. My heart can’t take it or the pain is too great, or am I good enough? Will I survive? And you just have to sort of somehow miraculously overcome. You just go, ‘I can’t, yes I can, yes you can.’ “ Aniston said she is not the only celebrity to feel that way. “And also know that your actors, your idols, your icons, whatever you call them, have all had that experience in their lives many, many times,” she added. “There’s nothing that separates us
from you, because we all started at the same place. We all came out of nowhere.” Aniston had some advice for those in attendance. “Don’t punish yourself if you feel that,” she said. “Go talk to people and seek help and always find something to inspire you.” The star who recently wrote an essay blasting the media for what she said was objectifying women also told the young crowd that “we need to empower women to not just be about dresses and beauty and selfies.” “We need to start having conversations and put our phones down and get out of social media, take social media brakes,” she said. “That’s why we’re not seeing the right stories being told, because everyone is stuck in their phones.” Source KMIR/CNN
Jennifer Aniston isn’t pregnant -- but she is “fed up” with the constant media speculation and “objectification” about her personal life that has led to years of rampant rumors, she says in a new essay.
Ohio Educator’s View from Democratic Convention
The Democratic Party platform rejects high-stakes testing and teacher evaluations based on student test scores. (Democratic National Convention) By Desert Star Staff PHILADELPHIA - An educational leader from the Buckeye State is among those at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. The president of the Ohio Education Association, Becky Higgins, is serving as a delegate, and said
she’s excited to get a glimpse at what the future of education will look like in the country should Hillary Clinton win the presidency. Higgins explained the National Education Association endorsed Clinton because she’s stood by teachers on universal pre-k and other issues.
“As a first grade teacher for the last 19, 20 years, I know how important it is that our students come to school ready to learn, have that background knowledge that they’re going to be able to be successful, so education issues are of primary importance to me this week,” she said.
By Desert Star Staff Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic Party’s governing organization, was booed off stage while speaking at the Florida delegation breakfast before delegates headed to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Philadelphia. Ahead of the DNC, Wasserman Schultz was introduced on Monday to Florida as “an unbelievable leader to the party,” but the crowd seemed to disagree. As soon as Wasserman Schultz – who currently serves as a US representative from the state – took the podium, constant booing from the crowd drowned out anything she tried to say. “I can see there’s a little bit of interest in my being here, and I can appreciate that interest,” she said, referring to her resignation that was announced in the
wake of a WikiLeaks scandal that indicated that Wasserman Schultz and the supposedly neutral Democratic National Committee was colluding with the Hillary Clinton campaign to ensure victory against antiestablishment Bernie Sanders in the party’s primary. Several delegates at the meeting could be seen holding signs reading “Division!” and “EMAILS,” referring to the scandal. “We have to make sure that we move forward together in a unified way,” Wasserman Schultz said over the unruly crowd. “We know that the voices in this room that are standing up and being disruptive, we know that is not the Florida that we know. The Florida that we know is going to make sure that we continue to make jobs.” Attendees began to chant, “Shame! Shame! Shame!” and Wasserman Schultz was quickly
escorted away from the podium. The embattled politician is slated to gavel in the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, even though her role in the event has been dramatically reduced after the email scandal. “You will see me every day between now and Nov. 8 on the campaign trail and we will lock arms and we will not stand down,” she told the booing crowd before leaving the stage. While her role at the DNC has been reduced to something relatively minor, some pro-Clinton Democrats are pushing for Wasserman Schultz to remove herself from the convention entirely. “It’s causing the distraction no one wanted at the convention,” one Clinton ally told The Hill. Top Clinton surrogate Ed Rendell said on Monday morning that he wouldn’t let Wasserman
The Democratic Party platform, released last week, rejects high-stakes testing and the use of student test scores in teacher evaluations, which is a departure from the Obama administration’s K-12 education agenda. The platform also supports community schools and greater accountability for charter schools. This is Higgins’ first time serving as a delegate, a role she said she’s honored to serve. And she notes it’s an emotional week for her given the historic nature of this year’s DNC. “I know that from now on when I ask my first graders, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ Little girls are going to believe that ‘Yes, I can be president,’” she added. “It is going to be possible because I’ve seen what’s happening this week.”
Higgins said she’s also speaking with other educators at the convention about the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act. She notes that in Ohio, community members, parents, teachers, elected leaders and the Ohio Department of Education will need to work together to develop a compliance plan. “And then how are we going to effectively implement it in the state? It is going to be absolutely key,” she said. “So right now we are having those discussions, many groups are working together to come up with a plan that is going to be successful for all the students in Ohio.” The act replaces No Child Left Behind and gives states more flexibility in developing educational standards.

Humidity Moves Into The Coachella Valley
By Vince Marino, Video Journalist you feel it the moment you step COACHELLA VALLEY outside. -Humid weather has made its “Its pretty extreme. It’s been way to the Coachella Valley and like that for a long time. Ever
since, we’ve arrived here. It’s taken a while to get used to. I’m not going to lie,” said Sam Edwards, a visitor from London.
“It’s pretty comparable to Florida, which I used to live in, so, I mean, it’s OK. But LA is on fire right now, so this is comparable,” said Egle Marcogliese of Los Angeles. While dry heat is the norm in the Coachella Valley, the monsoon season has been known to bring muggy conditions. “It’s just more of a moisture heat. More like Tampa but were a little bit more humid. Ours is a little bit more thicker,” said Tonya Haya, a visitor from Tampa Bay, Florida. “It’s been incredibly humid. Not really used to it because the weather back home is a lot cooler, especially this summer. So yeah, it’s been a bit of a struggle,” said Sophie Edwards, a tourist from London.
Humidity even affects local businesses. “Definitely slows it down. No one really sits outside. Everyone draws to the air conditioning or the misters. People walk by and they stop at the gate and they just stand there,” said Brianna Cardenas, a bartender at GyoroGyoro Izakaya. Health experts say to drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids and not to neglect vital minerals that are lost through sweat. “A good way to stay hydrated during the summer is to drink six glasses, pretty much eight ounces of water per glass. And it’s good to mix cucumbers with it for electrolytes,” said Chance Vincent of World Gym in Palm Desert. Source KMIR
By Julie Buehler, Video Journalist PALM SPRINGS, Ca. -When it’s 107 by 11 am, walking by Ben and Jerry’s on Palm Canyon could make even the most dedicated will power melt into a sweet treat. But when a faulty transformer in one of the SoCal Edison underground vaults blew, shutting off power to some businesses on Palm Canyon and shutting down Taquitz Between Indian Canyon and Palm Canyon, there was more than just will power melting. According to Palm Springs business owners, it’s a semicommon occurrence in the Coachella Valley-- a power outage. This time in downtown, Palm Springs and multiple businesses were affected as well as hotels. “We’re going to the Spa Casino that has air conditioning and we’re going to sit inside,” says Candace Watts, who is visiting Palm Springs from Huntington Beach for her 15th wedding anniversary. While some had options to help them through one of 3
power outages through Palm Springs and desert hot springs, not everyone did. “We’ve seen a lot of customers walking by and it was groups of people,” says Kierra Collins, a floor manager with Lush Couture. “So I felt like we’d have a lot of business and we ended up missing a lot of business.” The frequency of power outages in downtown Palm Springs concerns some local business owners, and Friday was another example of that. Ben and Jerry’s cleared out the freezers in the front of the store to house their ice cream in walk in freezers in hopes of preserving as much as possible. And while not all the businesses on palm canyon were affected, even the ones that had power were still affected by Taquitz closing down. Early Friday morning, a problem in one of the underground electrical hubs, or vault, that house the switchers and transformers, caught fire. SoCal Edison tells us it’s a
methodical process of repair that takes time and given the amount of firepower in these vaults, that can be a “very dangerous.” While Edison restored about 85% of the power by 1:00 pm, some were left with no AC, and no business well into the afternoon. “We’re hoping it comes back on,” says Watts. “We’ll be OK if it comes back on soon, otherwise, we’ll be sleeping in the pool.”
If that’s not an option for your family, SoCal Edison says the best way to prevent these kind of issues through the summer is conservation, pointing out refrigerators and AC units are the two biggest energy guzzlers in any home or business. While they say the power was restored after 2:00 Friday, the businesses KMIR spoke to closed down for the day. SCE tell KMIR it’s not a
supply issue that causes these outages, it’s the wear and tear on the equipment that’s running 24 hours a day for months on end. And they recommend turning the AC up to 78 while gone through the day, or setting it to turn off through the early morning hours to offer the system a much needed break. Source KMIR
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - On Saturday, firefighting planes had to halt operations for half an hour on the massive, deadly Sand Fire in Santa Clarita to track down a person flying a drone in the fire zone. On Monday, the federal government announced a program to make a dent in the problem. So far this year, drones have interfered with operations on more than 15 other fires. The Department of the Interior is partnering with private companies to get fire locations mapped out and sent to DJI, the country’s biggest drone manufacturer. Christie Wiley, the communications program lead for the office of Wildland Fire within
the U.S. Department of the Interior explained what happens next. “They put what’s called a geofence or a virtual boundary around that fire,” she said. “And so if you have a drone that goes across that boundary, then they send an alert to their drone operators.” The drone operators will get an immediate email or a text alert telling them to back off. Earlier this year, the government put a new system in place where fire managers report drones to the Federal Aviation Administration, which alerts law enforcement officers, who track down the violators. By law all hobby drones must be registered with authorities. Wiley said drones are very
dangerous because they can crash into a plane, and hurt even more people if either the drone or plane comes hurtling toward the ground. “They’re a hazard to the aircraft flying and they’re a hazard to the firefighters on the ground,” she added. “The fire managers do not shoot drones down. They will just discontinue the air operations.” Wiley said this new system is a prototype that will be improved and expanded by the 2017 fire season. ACLU Protecting Civil Rights of Protesters By Desert Star Staff PHILADELPHIA, Pa. Thousands of people have traveled to Philadelphia to rally and protest at the Democratic National Convention, and civil liberties advocates are on hand to be sure the protesters’ rights are protected. Initially the city tried to ban marches on a main street connecting City Hall and the convention center, and to deny rally permits between 3 and 6 p.m. But the ACLU sued, and the city backed down. Molly Tack-Hooper, a staff attorney with the ACLU of Pennsylvania, said her organization has received assurances that police will not interfere with lawful protests. “The message coming from Mayor Jim Kenney and the police commissioner has been that the department’s intent is to respect
the First Amendment rights of protesters,” she said. However, she advises that if police do overstep their authority, protesters should not push back on the street, but document the encounter as accurately as possible. To make that easier, the ACLU has created a Smartphone app called Mobile Justice PA. “It lets you record the police and it uploads that video directly to our servers so that if your phone is tampered with, if your videos are destroyed we will have a copy,” she added. The free app is available from app stores for both iPhones and Android phones. With thousands of people rallying on the streets of Philadelphia, Tack-Hooper points out the ACLU is not the only organization ready to help. “We are also working with

were mocked by conservative counter-protesters at the RNC. “Hate speech and all these sorts of negative views of people of color have been put out there already so the damage has been done,” Barrera said. “That’s why it’s important for people to go out and do actions and protest.” Grassroots Global Justice Alliance denounced the hardening of societal attitudes following a recent string of police shootings targeting black men, which were followed by targeted killings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge.
Ronald Flannery with the Southern Maine Workers Center lent his voice to the protests. “Now we’re facing a political storm of white rage, misogyny and hatred,” Flannery said. “And we know that the real solution must be built on unity, solidarity and love.” The groups also criticized American foreign policy, which they said is overly militaristic. Groups will take part in the March for Our Lives protest in Philadelphia Monday, and in the Black DNC Resistance March on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, many protesters are concerned about how the current police brutality against African Americans will affect future generations. Both young and old say the issue needs to be tackled now. “Most people don’t go out and do these things and it’s important that we do because we are the nest generation and we have to be involved in what is going on in our country,” young activist Cinthia Agredano said. Hundreds Participate in Black Lives Matter Protest in Palm Springs By Carlos Herrera, Video Journalist PALM SPRINGS, Ca. - The Black Lives Matter movement continued in Palm Springs, where protesters braved the scorching temperatures and took the streets of downtown tonight in a peaceful demonstration. About 250 protesters filled the sidewalks of downtown Palm Springs to voice their discontent on police brutality. Overall, it was a peaceful demonstration, but Black Lives Matters supporters hope it was enough to send a clear message to stop police brutality. “Everyone needs to focus in on the murder of black people in

It originally included a march along Palm Canyon Drive to Baristo Road, but the excessive humidity caused the route to be shortened. However, demonstrators braved the scorching temperatures and marched to Tahquitz Canyon Drive and back to Francis Stevens Park for a rally. “The message is love and infinite mind, we have to treat everyone the same,” Palm Springs

3 Home Upgrades that Offer Bang for Your Buck
By Desert Star Staff Putting dollars into a home remodeling project should be done with care. After all, your decisions could affect your home’s value if you sell it in the future. Here are three upgrades to consider.
Attic Insulation: For an affordable home project with a superb return on investment, start at the very top of your home and insulate your attic with fiberglass. This upgrade offers a 116 percent return on investment, according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2016 Cost vs. Value Report.
Not only will you see money on the table when you sell your home, this is one job that will prove to reduce energy bills now while improving home comfort. Fireplace: Make your home a hot property. New homebuyers ranked fireplaces as the number one most desired decorative appearance product in a new home, according to a National Association of Home Builders survey. “A fireplace can give you the competitive advantage you need to sell your home faster and at a higher value,” says Andy Tesch, brand director for Heat & Glo, an industry-leading fireplace manufacturer. Options abound to make a fireplace a possibility in any room of the house -- including kitchens and bathrooms, or even outdoors. And there’s a fireplace to fit your style and needs, whether you’re going for a contemporary look, want authentic masonry styling with the functionality of gas, like the TRUE series from Heat & Glo, or need a focal point for your outdoor space. You can even upgrade your wood-burning fireplace with an efficient gas
insert. Whatever you choose, a fireplace gives your home a “wow” factor. For free design resources and help selecting the right fireplace for your home, visit HeatnGlo. com. New Deck: To improve home value significantly and take better advantage of every square inch of your property, extend your living space outdoors. A deck is a dramatic addition that makes a statement. For a sound return on your investment, build with wood. Wood offers a 75 percent return, as opposed to composite material, which only offers a 64 percent return, according to the same Remodeling Magazine Report. While there are some maintenance costs associated with deck upkeep -- staining, pressure washing and furnishing -- doing it yourself can make this a worthwhile upgrade. Be an informed homeowner. Put your money where it counts with smart home upgrades that improve your comfort today and attract buyers tomorrow. StatePoint

When you think Facebook, you think Mark Zuckerberg. When you think Amazon. com, you think Jeff Bezos. These and other examples of celebrity corporate leaders show that a CEO’s personal brand can work in concert with the corporation’s brand, helping elevate both in the public’s eye. “Like it or not, today’s CEO has been pre-cast in the role of their company’s chief brand ambassador,” says Karen Tibor Leland, a branding expert and author of “The Brand Mapping Strategy: Design, Build and Accelerate Your Brand” (www. karenleland.com). “All CEOs have the daily opportunity and obligation to build their personal brand in service of their own and their corporation’s reputation.” Much of the public makes a direct connection between a corporation and its CEO. A study a few years ago by Weber Shandwick and KRC Research showed that 49 percent of a company’s reputation is attributed to the CEO’s reputation. That’s why it’s important for CEOs to take an active role in managing their reputations,
Leland says. Ways for them to do that include: • Claim your name. In the digital era, CEOs need to stake a claim to their names in similar fashion to the way miners staked their territory in the gold-rush days. One step in doing this is to register your name for a website, even if you have no immediate plans to create a personal-brand website, Leland says. That way you are protected from someone else hijacking your name and perhaps using it to damage your reputation. • Stay on top of search engines. It might seem like an act of vanity to type your own name into Google or another search engine, but it can be revealing to see what pops up. CEOs might find unfair comments, negative news articles or other less-thanflattering online chatter about them. They can’t remove that content, but they can take steps to move those items off the first few pages of the search results. For example, they can write blog posts and articles that use the same keywords as the negative content to drive those items off the first page. • Be a social CEO. A key

Mark Zuckerberg way CEOs can manage their reputation is to participate in social media. Many CEOs avoid social media, but that’s not wise, Leland says. Studies show that social media participation can make a significant difference in promoting a company’s brand. For example, BRANDfog’s 2014 “The Global Social CEO Survey” July 27, 2016
Jeff Bezos revealed that 71 percent of U.S. respondents viewed companies as more trustworthy if their top executives communicate about their core mission, brand values and purpose on social media. Of course, online isn’t the only place for CEOs to boost their personal brands. “Building your brand also
involves old-fashioned, faceto-face networking,” Leland says. “Go to a conference, take someone to lunch, attend a business workshop. This part of personal branding might seem a little more comfortable because it’s the type of branding you’ve probably practiced your entire career.” www.desertstarweekly.com
E N T E RTA I N M E N T Garry Marshall Remembered: He Made Us Laugh BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Theda Kleinhans Reichman and Garry Marshall Writer, director, actor, playwright Garry Marshall was born November 13,1934 in NYC, the Bronx. He died on Tuesday, July 19 in Los Angeles at the age of 81. During his illustrious career, he entertained us with his comedy writing, creating “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley,” and “Mork and Mindy.” for TV. He directed Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in “Pretty Woman” and wrote and directed countless other romantic film comedies. He was married for 53 years to his wife Barbara and in the end credits of every Garry Marshall film, he gives special thanks to Barbara Sue Wells. “Most studios discourage on-screen thanks,” Marshall told me, “but I have this written into my contract because I know I wouldn’t have a movie at
all without her help.” They have three children, Lori, Kathleen and Scott, who are also a film directors. When I first met Garry, I asked him what he would like to be remembered for, and he said, “As a writer. I really am a writer, and that’s what led to everything else. But the common thread is laughter. I also want to be remembered as someone who made people laugh, and used every tool at hand to do it... writing, producing, directing and acting. There’s always so much need for laughter. Somebody has to help to lighten the load.” However, even more important than show business was his love of family. In 2000, I had the pleasure of interviewing Garry for “Catholic Digest.” Even
though Garry was Protestant, the magazine considered him a worthy subject because of his values on and off the set. We met at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, which was designed by his youngest daughter, Kathleen. Before we began the interview, he pulled out an old picture from his wallet—a black-and-white photo of his parents in their youth. And on the wall, opposite his desk there was a picture of his dad, who was executive producer on “The Odd Couple” and “Laverne & Shirley” which starred his sister Penny. Success for Gary was not the main goal in life, though doing well was not to be sneezed at, even if you have 128 allergies— which he did. “Failure,” he said, “is not the worst thing that can

I have always tried to do things that were significant to me and have fun in the process.” One of his mottos was: “Life is more important than show business.” A c c o rd i n g t o G a r r y, “Your personal life has to take precedence over your professional life for you to achieve success in both. If I had the choice of attending a starstudded Hollywood premiere or an elementary school play where my kid wears a toga and says an inaudible line, I’d pick the play every time.” Gary also listened to ideas from his children. In fact, he credited the concept for “Mork & Mindy” to his youngest child Scott, an avid “Star Wars” film fan. He suggested that daddy should do a story on “Happy Days” about a space alien. When asked how, Scott said Richie Cunningham could have a dream about one. The nextday Marshall presented the idea to his writing staff. In the fateful episode introducing Mork from Ork, Robin Williams received a standing ovation when he came out to take his bow. Shortly thereafter, when asked to come up with a TV series idea for Paramount, Garry suggested doing a show about an alien. Who “visits earth, observes life here and reports back his finding to his planet.” Later that day he told his wife. Barbara he’d sold another show. When she asked him what it was about, he replied, “I’m not sure.”
A successful member of the West Coast entertainment industry were more marriages crash than cars, Marshall and his wife Barbara was married for more than 50 years. “What saved our marriage,” he told me, “aside from the fact that her medical training as a nurse has saved my life on more than one occasion, is that she’s not in show business, and she’s a better driver than I am.” Besides being a wonderful father and husband, he was a cherished friend to those who had the privilege of working with him. In tribute Henry Winkler, “The Fonz” on “Happy Days,” said, “He was the definition of friend” and Richard Gere, co-star with Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman” praised him, saying, “Everyone loved Garry. He was a mentor, a cheerleader and one of the funniest men who ever lived.” Another long-time friend is Hector Elizondo who worked with Garry in the 1984 film “The Flamingo Kid.” Since then Hector has been a fixture in all of Garry’s movies. Garry told me that he considered Hector “a good-luck charm.” Dear Garry, with all your special talents and infectious humor, you made the world laugh, but by leaving us on Tuesday, July19th, you’ve made us cry. Thanks for all the happy memories and “Happy Days” you‘ve left behind. To learn more about Garry Marshall and his wonderful life, check out his autobiography “Wake Me When It’s Funny.”
from the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The endangerment finding documents the magnitude of a problem that environmentalists have been urging the agency to tackle for almost a decade. According to Vera Pardee, senior counsel with the Center for Biological Diversity, under the Clean Air Act, the agency now is required to act. “EPA must set emission standards to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced by the thousands of aircraft crossing our skies every day,” she said. The EPA’s study found that U.S. aircraft are responsible for almost 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from all aircraft globally. If commercial aviation were considered a country, it would rank seventh in the world for carbon emissions, according to the Center. Pardee notes that a recent
Center for Biological Diversity report found that if nothing is done, aircraft will generate 43 gigatonnes of planetwarming pollution by 2050. “That number alone would put us far above what we can handle as far as not exceeding the temperature threshold that allows us to continue to live on this planet as we would like,” she added. Earlier this year the International Civil Aviation Organization recommended standards for carbon pollution for aircraft, but Pardee said they are far short of what can be done. A recent report from the International Council on Clean Transportation showed that some of the top 20 transatlantic air carriers could cut emission by up to 51 percent with existing technology and operational improvements.

Islands of Croatia – Sanctuaries of Beauty, Grace & Rejuvenation
Part 1: Getting There and Croatian Hospitality My family and friends are quite accustomed to me flying off somewhere on a press trip. However, when I mentioned that I was invited to Croatia, the reaction was quite universal: “I hear that it’s a beautiful country.” They also assumed I would be covering the capital city of Zagreb and as well as Dubrovnik. I mentioned that the select group of journalists invited on this trip would be covering Lošinj, one of the more than 1,000 islands located along the eastern coast of the pristine Adriatic Sea. Everyone said they had never heard of that island. Indeed, I must confess, neither had I. What awaited us was the discovery of a truly pristine, non-commercial setting of remarkable beauty, elegance, and tranquility. The island is known for the purity of its air and is a center for wellness and rejuvenation.
DAY 1 The trip began with a flight out of Los Angeles Airport with a connecting flight at JFK to Venice’s Marco Polo Airport. At the present time there is no direct way of getting to Lošinj, which is currently accessible by ferry or small plane. For me, that was part of the adventure. With ample time between flights, I was able to hang out at the Delta lounge and before I knew it, I was boarding the flight to Venice. When I arrived, I was met by Alan Horvat, the pilot of the tiny King Air plane

that would fly me to the Lošinj airport in thirty-five minutes. On arrival, I was checked through by Croatian customs. It’s a tiny building and unlike any port of entry I’ve experienced. Subsequently, we learned that plans for an expanded airport was in the works, which would accommodate larger planes and enhance tourism. The charming Lošinj, a well-kept secret, has a population of 10,000 and is as close to paradise as you can get. With its pure air, moderate climate, flora and fauna, and over 200 sunshinefilled days a year, this beautiful resort has been a mecca for therapeutic vacations going back centuries. There are over 1,000 plant varieties, with approximately 200 used for medicinal purposes, with special emphasis on respiratory diseases and allergies. Some of these healing plants include, lemon, palm, aloe, eucalyptus, magnolia, and myrtle. BELLEVUE HOTEL LOBBY: Our home for the next week was the spectacular Bellevue Hotel, which has earned the coveted five stars. The single rooms, junior suites, and the lavish presidential suite are all impeccably designed and include every amenity imaginable from hot tubs and heated bathroom floors, to elegantly furnished terraces overlooking the blue green Adriatic Sea or the verdant pine forest. A sumptuous breakfast is included in your stay and for those guests who take the ferry with their cars, parking is
free. If pampering is on your agenda, you’ve come to the right place as the hotel also has a state-of-the-art spa that offers many treatments. Additional amenities include a private beach, indoor and outdoor saltwater pools, tennis courts, and a gym. Having spent many hours traveling, lunch in the hotel’s restaurant Pin & Oli was quite appreciated. The meal began with a rustic soup, followed by eastern ox, a meat dish with parmigiano reggiano cheese. Dessert was a luscious cream of white chocolate with raspberries and pistachio crocante - small crunchy squares of caramelized pistachio - and a gracefully placed scoop of pistachio ice cream completing the plate. ROCKET LEAF SALAD: We settled in for the rest of the afternoon and before we knew it, we strolled off for dinner at the Veli Žal restaurant, which was a short walk from the hotel. The meal started with hot buns and a cold appetizer of marinated fillet of sea bream (fish,) anchovy fillets, shrimp salad, and cherry tomatoes, followed by dentex (fish) on fennel risotto. The meal was topped off with a deliciously light lemon cake. Of course the wines flowed freely and by the evening, California seemed like a far away planet. I might point out that in addition to the Bellevue Hotel, there are eight other four or five star hotels on the island, which are part of group owned and operated by the Lošinj Hotels & Villas, a hotel brand of Jadranka Hotels.

classic rock, prog-rock and Radiohead-worthy touches amidst Robinson’s articulate lyrics. Some albums demand to be heard along their entire run, and “Flux” is certainly one of those. Information: eaglerockent. com.
Artist: Rich Robinson Title: Flux (Eagle Rock Entertainmnet) You might like if you enjoy: The Black Crowes, the Record Company Tell me more: Rich Robinson’s “Flux” is rooted in the blues and roots rock, but the 13-track disc finds the talented founding Black Crowes guitarist mixing folk, gospel and experimental studio touches along the way. While “Flux” track listing is eclectic, there is also a cohesive sound and spirit that recalls the greatest of albums. “Music That Will Lift Me” starts as a breezy country-tinged folk ballad, that is lifted first with a powerful guitar solo, and then with an anthemic chorus. The psychedelic-tinged “Eclipse The Night” is the kind of song that Jimi Hendrix might have crafted if he had jammed with Jerry Garcia; “Ides of Nowhere” is an absorbing and completely original rock tune that blends
Artist: Tinsley Ellis Title: Red Clay Soul (Heartfixer Music) You might like if you enjoy: Robert Cray, Tommy Castro Tell me more: Armed with a stellar baritone voice, deft skills on guitar and his infectious songs, Tinsley Ellis taps into his Georgia roots across the aptlytitled “Red Clay Soul.” Ellis has the innate ability to fuse blues with soul and R&B (as evidenced by the emotive “Callin’,” “Hungry Woman Blues” and Robert Craystyled “Don’t Cut It”). He can also fuse his Southern fried blues with a rock edge; the straightforward “All I Think About,” slow burner “Circuit Rider” and Latin-flavored “Estero Noche” allow him to showcase his gifts to combine authentic riffs and strong lead guitar work. On the catchy “Givin’ You Up,” Ellis also adds some great blues harmonica
By Desert Star Staff Between new clothes and new school supplies, back-toschool season can put a strain on household budgets. In 2015, families planned to spend $630 on back-to-school items, according to the National Retail Federation, and this year’s numbers are also expected to be pricey. With a little planning, your family can get the most out of your school shopping budget -- by taking advantage of sales, comparison shopping, buying in bulk and simply by making sure you don’t buy things you already own. Here are some smart ways families can reduce costs as students head back to class this fall. End-of-Season Sales: Take advantage of end-of-season sales to stock up. This concept may not help you this fall, but it’s a great habit to adopt now for long-term savings. You can stock up on summer clothes
now and great fall items once the weather gets chillier. Stores will be offering deep discounts and clearance prices on items that eventually will come in handy for next back-to-school season. Remember to take into account that kids grow quickly! Add it Up: Bigger ticket school supply items can cost you a pretty penny if you don’t comparison shop. For example, required tools like a high-quality graphing calculator can come with a price tag of $75 or more! Get more for your money with an affordable model, such as Casio’s fx-9750GII, which retails for under $50. It offers useful features like a high resolution screen and compatibility with a personal computer. It is also permitted to be used in such major tests as the ACT and the SAT. You might like if you enjoy: The Blind Boys of Alabama Tell me more: Originally released in 2001, “Spirit of the Century” was the most commercially successful of the group’s albums to date (quite an achievement, since the American gospel group released its first record in the late 1940s). The deluxe edition of the album recently issued by Omnivore Recordings is the perfect way to rediscover a disc that earned the group a Grammy win for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album. Famed guests such as blues harmonica great Charlie Musselwhite, guitarist David Lindley, and bassist John Hammond add firepower to the group’s authentic vocals. The standout on the album is the group’s innovative version of “Amazing Grace” that blends that track’s iconic lyrics with the music of “House of the Rising Sun.” As if the original album wasn’t fantastic enough, the new edition features seven tracks recorded live at New York’s the Bottom Line in 2001. Whether singing introspective reworkings of modern favorites (Custis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” Prince’s “The Cross”) or old-time gospel (“Wade in the Water,” “Precious Lord”), there is a exuberant spirit and timeless joy in the group’s sound honed since 1944. The liner notes here are very detailed and add insight and understanding to the effort that went into the original 2002 release. Bonus materials on this expanded edition include seven tracks recorded on a “Morning Becomes Eclectic” session featured on radio station KCRW-FM in 2002. Information: omnivorerecordings.com.
Back-to-School Tips When You’re on a Budget

Don’t buy things you already own, and take advantage of bulk discounts for the stuff you need! Before making your shopping list take stock of what school supplies you already have in your closets -- and your child’s backpack -- from the last school year. From scissors to folders to unused or partially used notebooks, you may already have many things your kids need for the year ahead. For those necessities that kids will need all year long -such as tape, paper, pens, pencils, markers and more -take advantage of bulk sales at discount stores and online retailers. Buying more now can save you cash in the months ahead. Go Green: Brown bags, plastic baggies and plastic silverware are small expenses that add up quickly. Instead, opt for reusable lunch container alternatives and a one-time expense. It’s not only good July 27, 2016

Smart Tips for Kids Eat Right Month
By Desert Star Staff Nutrition is important for everyone, but especially for children, as it is directly linked to all aspects of their growth and development. Childhood obesity affects one in six children and adolescents in the
United States. Though associated with elevated risks of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, bone and joint problems, and sleep apnea, among other health problems, childhood obesity can usually be prevented. “August, which is Kids

There we visited an herb distillery where owner Kucic Guarino gave us a demonstration of how the herbs, such as sage, lavender, rosemary and juniper, are processed. It’s always fascinating to see how products that we buy off of shelves are produced. Another fun stop along the way was to a small shop that produces a variety of essential oils. The aroma from the different oils filled the air with delicious scents. Some of us dabbed a little bit on our wrists and behind our ears, the light fragrances lingering for the rest of the day. Eat Right Month, is an ideal time for families to focus on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles,” says Kristi King, registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson. “Parents can inspire kids to
eat healthfully by getting them involved in shopping and preparing your family’s meals.” Before You Head to the Store: Create a shopping list together, so kids feel like they are part of the decision making process. “Include food items from each of the ‘MyPlate’ food groups from the USDA, which include fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy,” says King. Before you head out the door, grab your reusable shopping bag to reduce waste. Wash your bag regularly to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria. At the Store: Once you get to the store, shop together and encourage children to pick a few new foods they would like to try. “Talk about foods’ colors, shapes, flavors and textures as you shop,” says King. “And take time to read the food labels. This not only helps kids understand nutrition concepts, but also gives them a chance to practice reading skills.” Back at Home: When
you return home, involve children in putting groceries away -- especially foods that require refrigeration or freezing. Refrigerate perishable food items promptly and properly. “Explain to your kids the importance of refrigerating perishable foods within two hours,” King says. “And remember, the clock starts when you pull an item from the refrigerated case at the store, so head straight home after your shopping trip if you have perishables in the car.” To learn more about Kids Eat Right Month and for healthful eating tips, recipes, videos and more, visit KidsEatRight.org. As role models, parents and caregivers play a vital role in children’s nutrition -- teaching children about healthful foods and making sure kids get enough physical activity each day. “Consult a registered dietitian nutritionist in your area to ensure your family is getting all of the necessary nutrients,” says King. On a sad note, it is said that once upon a time, when Osor was a walled city under the Austro-Hungarian empire, a malaria epidemic broke out, killing over 20,000 people or every third person living on the island. Ultimately, in order to try to control the spread of this disease, the wall was demolished to allow the entry and circulation of fresh air. It was a full, fascinating day and in typical Croatian warm hospitality, we were treated to yet another massage in the Bellevue spa. There are over 25 tiny villages on the island, some of which are not inhabited although there seems to be trend of people returning to some of the islands and restoring vacant homes. One notable fact is that there are no poisonous snakes on the island, although they can be found in the Kvarner area. The island has its own fresh water source from the pristine Lake Vrana, which is said to be the deepest fresh water lake in Eastern Europe, averaging roughly 243 feet at its deepest point. Impossible Foods Introduces Impossible Burger At Momofuku Nishi
By Desert Star Staff REDWOOD CITY, Calif., -- Impossible Foods Inc., announced today that it will introduce the Impossible Burger on Wednesday, July 27, at Momofuku Nishi in Manhattan. This is the first time the Impossible Foods “animal-free” burger will be regularly featured on a restaurant menu, and marks the commercial introduction of a new generation of delicious plant-based foods that promises to revolutionize the world’s food system. Opened in January 2016 in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood, Momofuku Nishi is part of the Momofuku Group of restaurants founded by worldrenowned chef David Chang.
“Impossible Foods is honored to have a chef of David Chang’s talent and vision as our anchor chef in New York,” said Patrick O. Brown, M.D., Ph.D., founder and CEO of Impossible Foods. “Under David’s skilled hand, the Impossible Burger is moving to the next level of taste.” The Impossible Burger looks, cooks, smells, sizzles, and tastes like conventional ground beef but is made entirely from plants. Among the breakthroughs that make the Impossible Burger unique is the discovery that a molecule called “heme” is the magic ingredient that makes meat look, cook and taste gloriously meaty. While heme is exceptionally
abundant in meat, it is a basic molecular building block of life on Earth, including plants. Impossible Foods uses a plant-based heme protein to give the Impossible Burger its irresistibly meaty taste. “I was genuinely blown away when I tasted the burger,” said chef and founder of Momofuku, David Chang. “The Impossible Foods team has discovered how to reengineer what makes beef taste like beef. We’re always looking to support people who are making the best products in the best ways possible and to me, the Impossible Burger is one more example. First and foremost, we think this makes a delicious burger.” Momofuku’s first restaurant on the West side of Manhattan, Momofuku Nishi, will serve a limited number of Impossible Burgers during lunch, brunch and dinner service starting Wednesday. The ‘Nishi Style Impossible Burger’ is topped with romaine, beefsteak tomato, pickles and special sauce and served on a Martin’s potato roll with shoestring fries. Guests may also add
cheese upon request. Impossible Foods’s mission is to produce delicious, nutritious, affordable plant-based foods with a lower environmental impact than raising animals for food. Producing the Impossible Burger requires approximately a quarter of the water used to produce the same burger from a cow, a twentieth of the land, and only an eighth of the greenhouse gas emissions, according to a lifecycle analysis conducted by Impossible Foods. “Two factors have made the Impossible Burger as good as it is,” said Harold McGee, author of On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen and other works about food science and its history. “One is Impossible Foods’s ambition to make a plant-based burger that’s just as delicious as a beef burger, with the same satisfying flavors and textures. The other is its pursuit of a deeper scientific understanding of meat itself, and how cooking makes it delicious. This research effort has generated major
new insights into the flavor of meat, and continues to drive the innovations that put the Impossible Burger in a category of its own.” The Impossible Burger’s key ingredients are water, wheat protein, coconut oil, potato protein and leghemoglobin (i.e., heme) plus natural flavors and micronutrients. The Impossible Burger delivers comparable protein and iron to conventional beef but contains no cholesterol, hormones, or antibiotics. Later this year, the Impossible Burger is also expected to become a regularly featured menu item at select restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Impossible Foods expects the price of the burger to decline as it scales up production, until it is at or below the cost of commercial ground beef. The company’s technology can be used to produce virtually any animal-based food, from steaks and chops to chicken and fish and dairy foods.

Ansbach attacker pledged allegiance to ISIS
By Desert Star Staff The attacker who left a bomb outside a bar in Ansbach, Germany, had enough materials to make another explosive device, according to police. The man also pledged allegiance to Islamic State in a video found on his phone. The attacker, identified as Mohammad D., possessed gasoline, chemicals, and other material that could be used to make a bomb, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Hermann said, as cited by AP. The attacker had also pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on one of his phones. “A provisional translation by an interpreter shows that he expressly announces, in the name of Allah, and testifying his allegiance to Abu Bakr alBaghdadi, a famous Islamist
leader, an act of revenge against the Germans because they’re getting in the way of Islam,” Hermann said at a news conference. “I think that after this video there’s no doubt that the attack was a terrorist attack with an Islamist background,” he added. IS has also claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Amaq news agency. Hermann said that two mobile phones were found that belonged to the man, along with multiple SIM cards and a laptop, Reuters reported. He said officers also discovered videos with “Salafist content” on storage devices seized from the man’s home. The 27-year-old attacker, originally from Syria, had been denied asylum in Germany and had twice been ordered to be deported to Bulgaria, his point of entry into the European Union,

By Terry Spencer FORT MYERS, Fla. - Gunfire erupted at a nightclub hosting a swimsuit-themed party for teens in Florida, leaving two teens dead and at least 17 other people wounded, officials said Monday. It was not immediately clear what triggered the violence, but Fort Myers police Capt. Jim Mulligan said the shooting was not an act of terror. Police detained three people and said the area around Club Blu had been deemed safe, Mulligan said. The slain teens were 14-year-old Sean Archilles and 18-year-old Stef’an Strawder, police said. Archilles lived about a mile from the nightclub, said his father, Jean Archilles. His son loved to play football and basketball, and was a star as a junior for Lehigh High School, averaging more than 15 points a game. “He liked to make people laugh. He’s a funny kid. He’s always joking,” Jean Archilles said. Four people were in the
hospital. Two were in critical condition and two in fair condition, said Lisa Sgarlata, the chief administrative officer at Lee Memorial Health System. All of the other patients were treated and released. The victims ranged in ages from 12 to 27. Police said they want to talk to some of the victims who were treated and released from the hospital and haven’t yet spoken with investigators. There were two active crime scenes - the club and a street in the area, which also remained closed as police investigated. The club is in a strip mall that includes a daycare center and is across the street from a large apartment complex. The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. Monday, just as the club was closing and parents were arriving to pick up their children. Syreeta Gary told WFTX-TV her daughter ran to avoid being shot. Her daughter was OK, but her daughter’s friend “got hit in the leg and luckily it’s just her leg,” she said. “Her dodging bullets and
running, dropping in between cars, it’s ridiculous that these kids have to go through this,” Gary said. “They can’t enjoy themselves because you have other people that have criminalistic minds and they just want to terrorize things.” Club owner Cheryl Filardi, who said she was in the back room when the shots rang out, said at least 10 security guards were hired for the party - two in the parking lot, one or two at the door and the rest floating inside. She said the club has had four or five teen parties over the past half-dozen years, and this was the second one this summer. She said the parties are something positive for a rough and often-violent neighborhood. “To be honest with you, every day someone’s getting shot in this area. These days in Lee County, somebody’s always shooting,” Filardi said. “If we do teen parties, we always have a ton of security and we’ve never had a problem.” Strawder was a star basketball player in the area,
who always took time to help other players. “Everyone was afraid to play against him because he was so good. He would guide you and give you advice on how to step up your game and how to guard him and things like that,” said 16-year-old Peyton Hebon who started playing against Strawder in travel basketball leagues in sixth grade. Strawder was always positive and energetic and was unstoppable on the court, Hebon said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. Law enforcement removed some of police tape by Monday morning, allowing the media and public to get closer to the entrance to Club Blu. There were bullet holes in concrete planters and wooden support beams. Sheriff’s evidence markers were still affixed to the holes. The letter “A’’ was attached near a post, while nearby “L,” ‘’M,” ‘’N” and “O’’ we’re marked near a planter filled with scraggly foliage. “It breaks my heart. No family
should have to endure this kind of pain,” said Sylvia Bargouthi, a mother who didn’t know any of the victims. “Children should be able to enjoy their life without being brutally murdered.” Bargouthi carried a small stuffed animal with her and placed it near the club’s entrance. State records online show the alcohol license for Club Blu was revoked June 7 because of an incident that occurred a year ago, but there were no additional details available, according to records from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The same records show that a complaint was filed in 2014 for “criminal activity” and that the club was given an official notice. The shooting comes more than a month after a nightclub shooting in Orlando that was the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history. The shooting at the Pulse nightclub on June 12 left 49 victims dead and 53 others wounded. Source KMIR/AP
By Desert Star Staff Hip-hop star Dr. Dre was searched, handcuffed, and issued a citation outside his California home after a man called police to report that Dre had pointed a gun at him. Police found no proof of the claim, which came after an alleged road-rage incident. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies said that they arrived at the Malibu home of Andre Young, known as Dr. Dre, on Monday after a motorist called law enforcement claiming
Dre had pointed a gun at him. Dre told the deputies that the man had blocked his driveway twice and that he had not made threats for which he was accused, the Los Angeles Times reported. Dre, 51, told the deputies that the man had followed him home following a road-rage incident, a source familiar with the sheriff’s investigation told the Times. Dre was cooperative with law enforcement, the deputies said, allowing them to handcuff
and search him. Deputies did not find a gun present, according to reports. Dre was eventually issued a citation, but not taken into formal custody. Video posted by TMZ shows Dre being searched. When Dre accessed his cellphone during the incident, the man reportedly said, “Here we go again, another black guy with a gun,” TMZ reported. Dre told deputies that the man had followed him home from the freeway, then parked his car directly in front of his
residence, blocking his driveway. Dre said he then asked the man to leave; the man did, but then quickly returned and parked at approximately the same location in front of Dre’s home. Dre then used a cellphone to record the man, who then responded by driving away. “Due to the nature of the call, the person was searched, handcuffed, and briefly detained in a patrol car while deputies investigated the incident,” said Sheriff’s Captain Chris Reed, who explained that in
Los Angeles County, a private person can request a citizen’s arrest involving an alleged misdemeanor crime even when a law enforcement officer was not present to witness what occurred. In order for the case to progress beyond a citation, the man who called police must take Dre to court, Deputy Mike Barraza told USA Today, which also reported that Dre’s attorney and publicist has not responded to request for comment.

THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that JOANNA AVERETT be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 039507CA. “Grey Gardens” The Musical At Center Theatre Group
L-R: Betty Buckley, Josh Young and Rachel York in “Grey Gardens”. Photo by Craig Schwartz By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic “Grey Gardens”, the musical currently on stage at the Ahmanson Theatre, received ten Tony nominations in 2007, going on to snare three wins. One each for Christine Ebersole for Best actress in a leading role and one for Mary Louise Wilson for Best actress in a featured role, and William Ivey Long for Best costume design. It was an immensely popular production, that it was reimagined in 2015 for a short run in Seattle by playwright Doug Wright, Scott Frankel the composer, and Michael Korie the lyricist, and then into a new 2016 production now in Los Angeles. “Grey Gardens” is once again being staged by the awardwinning director Michal Wilson who helmed the production back in 2007. His cast in this 2016 production stars a sensational Rachel York as ‘little’ Edie Beale/ Edith, and a terrific Betty Buckley as Edith Bouvier Beale. “Grey Gardens” in short, is the story of an alpha female mom, Edith Bouvier Beale played by Betty Buckley and her daughter Edie Beale played by Rachel York and the odd assortment of friends and eccentric relatives. It’s the classic tale of a love-hate
relationship between a celebrity mother and her daughter who happen to be very prominent people in New York society. It is also an inverse study of the ‘rags to riches’ story so popular in American culture. The Beale’s of toney East Hampton, Long Island, lived in a 28-room mansion and led a life of luxury, until the Wall Street crash of 1929 reduced the family to a lifestyle bordering on poverty and squalor behind their mansion walls. The production boasts a supporting cast of solid performers led by Bryan Batt as George Gould Strong, Edith’s staunch, supportive, and her effete piano-playing companion and friend, along with a wonderful Sarah Hunt as ‘little Edie’ in Act I. Josh Young portrays Joseph P. Kennedy (JFK’s older brother) in in this show who is about to become engaged to ‘little Edie (a creation of playwright Doug Wright that never took place in real life). In Act II, Young plays Jerry, a neighbor who helps around the crumbling house. Simon Jones plays JV ‘Major’ Bouvier, the curmudgeonly father of Edith who arrives to deliver some of the funnier lines like, “marriage is for the tax codes and Mormons.” Davon Williams plays the redoubtable butler

Speaking earlier about lovehate relationships, I harbor some misgivings about the production as to its overall impression. Yes, it’s a ten Tony nomination production, and yes, audiences lap it up. But if I had to sum up this musical show it would sound something like this: It’s a show that definitely has a Broadway successful look and feel to it. But it is way over produced; the
producers didn’t leave out one single cliché. Despite the music and lyrics which are necessary for a musical, the production is too long. Two hours and forty-five minutes including one intermission with 24 musical numbers tests the audience’s staying power. Director Wilson leads a creative team that includes Scenic Designer Jeff Cowie, who delivers a stunning visual stage space for the actors. In Act II the aging of the once luxurious mansion is almost worth the price of admission itself. The
costumes by Ilona Somogyi are pitch-perfect for two time periods that span 32 years, and the lighting designed Howell Binkley (he designed the lights for “Hamilton”) and the sound designed by Jon Weston are first rate. The production design is by Jason H. Thompson, with choreography by Hope Clarke. The music direction is under the baton of Kevin Stites. “Grey Gardens” performs at the Ahmanson Theatre through August 14, 2016.
