Big Bear Oktoberfest Big Bear Oktoberfest 2022 Season is Set for a Nine-Weekend Celebration By Desert Star Staff BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. – Today, Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest announced its 2022 season for a nineweekend stretch that starts September 10 and ends November 5, 2022. It’s nine

weekends of certain good times! If there’s one annual event in Big Bear that people look forward to attending, it’s undoubtedly Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest. The scenery that surrounds Big Bear is a relief from reality.

Still, when live Bavarian oom-pah-pah music is added to the mix, festive beer gardens that serve choice imported German beers, food courts that give off aromas of authentic German fare, and adrenaline-

fueled chicken dances, then it simply becomes a celebration like no other. “Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest is where all walks of life can come together, all under the same blue alpine sky, and leave

their reservations at the door, let their hair down, and flap their arms in unison to the chicken dance,” said Monica Marini, managing director of Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest. “This fall, we will again deliver a true Bavarian

in 1970, and Motherhood, Apple Pie & The Flag in 1971. Additionally, the identical twins appeared 135 times on “Hee Haw” between 1969 and 1985. With the appreciation and explosion of Americana and roots music over the past decade, it’s not a stretch to see there may very well be a new appreciation of The Hagers in 2022. The talents of the twins shine across the 30-track collection. The lovely “Loneliness Without You,” lively “I’m Her Fun,” affecting take on Buck Owens’ “Tender Loving Care,” soaring “Give It Time,” elegant “Flowers Need Sun Too” and nuanced cover of Merle Haggard’s “Silver Wings” are early highlights. Late disc standouts include the lovely “Second Fiddle,” lovely “I’m Miles Away,” countrified “Motherhood, Apple Pie & The Flag,” alluring “Four Strong Winds” and Everly Brothers-styled “California On My Mind.” Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Ward and Zooey Deschanel — are back with their first new full-length album since 2016, the delightful Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson. The new title features the duo’s signature blend of 1960s pop sheen and indie rock sensibilities, a perfect fit with Brian Wilson’s timeless songcraft. While She & Him cover a few of Wilson’s best-known hits, they more often stray off the beaten path across the 14-track set. The strength of the album spans from the uplifting “Do It Again” and “Good To My Baby” to the melancholyadorned “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Melt Away”

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL READ Title: The Wild World of Barney Bubbles Author: Paul Gorman Publisher: Thames & Hudson Pages: 240 pages; 580 illustrations Tell me more: Previously published in 2009 under the title Reasons to Be Cheerful, the just published The Wild World of Barney Bubbles is an expanded and immersive celebration of the visual work of pioneering graphic artist Barney Bubbles. The

240-page book penned by journalist-author Paul Gorman is bolstered by contributions from Peter Saville, Clarita Hinojosa, Billy Bragg and Art Chantry. The book features hundreds of seldom seen photographs, working sketches, notebook images and original artwork. Readers who journey through the book will appreciate how fully Bubbles — born Colin Maximilian Fulcer in 1942 — was able to use arresting graphic design as a bridge between fine art and music. Among the diverse field of music makers to feature Bubbles’ work were Hawkwind, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, the Psychedelic Furs, Carlene Carter and many more. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from spending time inside the pages of The Wild World of Barney Bubbles is how Bubbles’ work wonderfully avoided a single style while soaring no matter the discipline. Sadly, Gorman died in November 1983. He was only 41. Information: thamesandhudsonusa.com.

5 Tips for Creating an Ethical Will By Desert Star Staff Preparing a will is likely high on your list of priorities when you’re organizing your end-of-life affairs. What you may not realize is that there are different kinds of choices. A last will is probably what you think of first; it’s a legal directive about how your assets should be handled upon death. On the other hand, an ethical will isn’t a legal document. It’s a way for you to convey thoughts, life lessons learned, the intentions behind your choice, and wishes for your loved ones. If you think you’d like to prepare an ethical will, here are some tips from RememberingALife.com, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association, to guide you in the process: Decide on your format. An ethical will can be written, but it can also be delivered via audio or video. There’s not a right or wrong approach; it depends on how you’re most

comfortable communicating. One consideration is your comfort level with the audio or video editing. Unless you’re confident you can say what you want, the way you want, in one pass, you’ll need some basic editing skills to ensure your message is conveyed precisely as you wish. Determine your purpose. Ethical wills can serve many different purposes. You may use it to convey your love and appreciation to your loved ones or to mend fences you weren’t able to while alive. Your ethical will can also be a way to share your values, what you’ve learned in life, and your dreams for those you hold dear. It may even be your chance to share the secret ingredient in a beloved family recipe. Gather your thoughts. Drafting an ethical will can be emotional, so organizing what you’d like to say ahead of time can help keep you focused. Make notes about the points you’d like

to share, adding details or embellishments as you wish. However, avoid saying anything in your ethical will that contradicts your legal will. Start writing. Even if you ultimately plan to record your ethical will, writing out what you plan to say can be a good idea. Remember, this

isn’t a formal dissertation or award-winning novel, so convey your thoughts freely. Clarity is essential, but don’t be afraid to let your personality, humor, and other characteristics shine through. Edit yourself. Preparing an ethical will is no small undertaking; chances are,

over time, you’ll want to change or add to your original draft. Take your time and revisit your draft as often as you need to capture everything you want to say. Find more resources to support you and your family’s end-of-life planning at RememberingALife.com.

Rising HOA Insurance Rates and Broker Advice

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Hi Kelly: Thanks for all the great info on HOAs. Our community’s liability insurance policies are up for renewal soon. Some neighboring associations are reporting ten-fold increases in fire insurance premiums due to brushfire proximity concerns. Even though our community does not appear to be in a fire-prone area according to real estate sources, are we in for a huge shock? B.C., Rancho Santa Margarita.

continue to be a challenge.” I asked our experts, how can HOAs maximize their insurance dollars? Berg said HOAs should make sure their broker specializes in HOAs to make sure that the HOA has the right advice in making the business decision for their community. Litman suggested exploring changing the HOA’s approach to “bare walls” insurance, which often requires an amendment to the CC&Rs. He said this could reduce the premium about 5%, depending upon the insurance company. Bare walls insurance means the HOA only insures for the shell of the residence Dear B.C.: Many of my –the interior is only restored client associations have also had to the drywall, excluding an increasingly difficult time with fixtures (cabinets, sinks, etc), the rapidly increasing cost of insurance coverage protecting against damage to the property. To bring some insurance expert guidance into the discussion, I contacted Michael Berg, of Berg Insurance in Lake Forest, and Scott Litman of the Scott Litman Insurance Agency in Calabasas, two leading insurance brokers known for serving HOAs. As to the outlook for insurance premiums, Litman said “unfortunately, this is going to be a long-term problem. According to reports, claims for wildfires are increasing substantially each year.” Michael Berg explains that placement of property damage insurance is not hard for every community, but “only those that are experiencing a challenging claim history or located in wildfire hazard zones.” For those communities, he states “placement will www.desertstarweekly.com

finishes (carpet, wallcovering) and interior contents. Many of my condominium client associations have moved in that direction, but first the CC&Rs must be examined. As Mr. Litman stated, it may require a CC&R amendment to align the HOA’s insurance responsibility with its damage responsibility. Also, if the HOA adopts a “bare walls” approach, some reasonable advance notice should be provided to homeowners, so they are not exposed to major uninsured loss after the HOA insurance changes. Before pursuing bare walls as an insurance option, consult experienced HOA legal counsel on this important issue. Another technique many HOAs use is to reduce the

cost of insurance is to increase deductibles, and many HOAs already have pursued that strategy, requiring the HOA to be prepared to absorb a greater out of pocket loss. I asked the experts about common mistakes they see regarding HOA insurance. To Mr. Berg, “the biggest mistake is ignoring the business relationship with their insurance provider.” Scott Litman said, “we find a substantial amount of policies missing important coverages.” He recommended HOA boards and managers annually review their policies. There are many excellent insurance experts serving California HOAs. Thanks to Michael Berg and Scott Litman for sharing their

expertise and advice. HOAs are better served if lawyers and insurance brokers communicate regarding their mutual clients. HOAs should review their insurance coverage to confirm that it matches its governing document responsibilities for insurance and damage. Best regards, Kelly Kelly G. “If I Forget” A Top-Notch Production Despite Directorial Overreach

Samantha Klein (‘Sharon Fischer,’) Valerie Perri (‘Holly Fischer,’) Mattt Gottlieb (‘Lou Fischer,’) Jacob Zelonky (‘Joey,’) Valerie Perri, (‘Holly Fischer,’) Síle Bermingham (‘Ellen Jerry Weil (Howard Kilberg,’) and Jacob Zelonky (Joey Oren) – All gather to celebrate dad.’ Manning,’) and Jerry Weil (‘Howard Kilberg,’) With theatrical styles ranging from Naturalism, Expressionism, and Theatre of the Absurd, to Modernism, Postmodernism, and Classical, in trying to identify precisely what director Jason Alexander had in mind, your guess is as good as mine. However, if I could use the illustrative term “mixed metaphor” or, in this case, mixed theatrical styles that directly contradict each other, that would be closer to what was presented on the opening night of IF I FORGET at the multiaward-winning Fountain Theatre. Notwithstanding the inconsistent and sometimes confusing direction, this outstanding cast delivered riveting, nuanced performances servicing Steven Levenson’s wellwritten script. He won a Tony Award for writing “Dear Evan Hansen” book. Based on personal conversations with his family and friends, the crisp dialogue, packed with opposing ideas, explores the continuing impact the Holocaust has on Jews and family challenges. The action is set at the beginning of the 21st century. George Bush is president, and the Oslo Peace Accords between Israel and Palestine have collapsed. The setting is in a white, uppermiddle-class neighborhood in Washington, D.C., where the family gathers to deal with the mother’s recent death, which transitions to other family matters and hidden resentments. Levenson’s script sharply details the struggles of this family with pathos and humor, avoiding the pitfalls of turning it into “kitchen sink drama,” which generally revolves around the struggles of working-class families. On the rise, the entire cast walks on stage and holds in a tableau. Through an opaque door window, we

6

DesertSTAR

see a dancer doing shadowy gyrations. (More on that later.) After the stage is drenched in red lighting, the actors bring in the sparse set pieces, and the play begins. A device, usually seen in experimental theatre, is having the actors on stage all the time with those members, not in a specific scene, seated either on stage left or stage right, becoming part of the audience. No one uses that theatrical device more effectively than Jermaine to the script and Tim Robbins in his Actors Gang Theatre, known for experimental, avant-garde productions. The action finally begins with Michael Fischer, played by Leo Marks, who delivers a compelling, fascinating performance. He is talking to his wife Ellen, well played by Síle Bermingham, and they are discussing their daughter Abby, who suffers from mental issues, including an eating disorder, which is just the tip of the iceberg. She is currently in Israel, and given the unstable Middle East, dad is overwrought with her being there. A professor teaching Jewish History, he has written a book – “Forgetting the Holocaust” - scolding Jews over their obsession with that nightmarish event - a book that will eventually cost him tenure and make him un-hirable by any college or university. However, he defends the book because people misunderstood his point of view. We next meet his sister Holly, played by Valerie Perri, who, like the rest of the cast, mines the multilayers of her character. She is married to Howard, well played by Jerry Weil, a seemingly successful attorney with a few secrets and a new toy called a cell phone. A confused young Joey, nicely played by Jacob Zelonky, provides comic relief and a questionable

mental capacity. Samantha Klein plays Sharon Fischer, the sibling who spent the most time caring for their late mother. They have gathered to discuss the disposition of mom’s belongings, look at old photos, and reminisce about their childhoods. Their dad, Lou Fischer, is completing the family unit, wonderfully played by Matt Gottleib. He delivers a subtle, deeply felt characterization, especially his moving description of his experience as a World War II soldier encountering the prisoners at Dachau. Circling back to the mysterious dancer we saw at the top of Act 1, using ghost-like figures in plays is not a new theatrical device. Sometimes it’s comical as in Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit” or haunting as in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” where the protagonist encounters his father’s ghost. Why did this device work in those two examples? It worked because the ghost appearances were integral to the writing and not layered on for “effect.” The weakest part of this production is the

devices inorganically imposed on the script by Alexander. Furthermore, the jarring ghostly dance sequences by Caribay Franke as the troubled Abby are strikingly similar to Australian singer/ dancer Sia – right down to the short platinum blonde hair. In Act II, years have passed, and dad has had several strokes. There are discussions on how they can pay for needed aroundthe-clock help at $1,000 weekly. Their biggest asset is a clothing store that has been in the family since 1947 and is currently leased out at a fraction of the market rate. They discuss selling the building to pay for dad’s care which, like in Strindberg’s “Cherry Orchard,” is a vital part of their family history. Michael makes the strongest argument for its sale. Levenson’s brilliantly written script combines a family drama with social and political commentary as performed by this talented ensemble, all of whom deliver director-proof nuanced performances. By Desert Star Staff Multiple studies have confirmed that students across the country experienced significant learning loss during the pandemic. In Los Angeles, 108 community organizations and local agencies share $7.8 million in grant money to help kids catch up. The California Community Foundation just announced the grants as the final installment of a three-year program. Victor Dominguez, president and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles said the funds help support 45 summer camps across the region. “We’ve been able to engage more than 20,000 kids and teens in safe, high-quality sports, arts, fitness, civic engagement, and STEM summer enrichment activities,”

Dominguez outlined. The rapid response grants will also help the mayor’s office, Los Angeles Unified School District and the County Office of Education forge partnerships with community-based organizations in the future. The initiative is expected to help 86,000 kids, ages 5 to 17, right away and reach another 136,000 in afterschool activities this fall with tutoring, STEM classes, and mental health programs. Valerie Cuevas, director of education for the California Community Foundation, which oversees the grants, said the goal is to help restore some of what was taken away by the pandemic. “Our major effort was to make sure that youth maintain a connection to learning, connection to school; find a way to maintain joy, connection to peers,

despite the heaviness of everything happening around us,” Cuevas explained. She added that the summer learning initiative was made possible by huge

donations from multiple charitable organizations, including $3.3 million from the Ballmer Group. Disclosure: The California Community

J’s Deli, Restaurant, Bakery, and Bar Opens in Palm Desert

By Pamela Price It’s a challenging choice one has to make while perusing the bright red ninepage encased plastic menu handed to you at J’s Deli in Palm Desert, which opened in March of this year. Under Jay and Vanessa Rubenstein’s ownership, their Deli has a glamorous, photogenic bakery with irresistible choices from cinnamon rolls and freshly baked Danish to New York cheesecake to Janet’s Carrot Cake, all deserving of a separate article. Frankly, I don’t know where to start this review. I will open with page two, breakfast, which is “Served All Day.” Moving right into the Signature Omelets, which number sixteen, all share something in common, the price, $16. Whether you order the traditional Denver or move on to the Greek, you can depend on “three cagefree eggs with “the freshest ingredients” with your choice of bagel or toast, served with a potato latke, hash browns sliced tomatoes, cottage cheese, or fresh fruit. In case one of your favorite items added on is missing, there are 19 listed, from pico de gallo to maple turkey sausage, for an additional $1.50. Moving right along to Smoked Fish Plates, four choices will confront you, from “wild-caught smoked white fish or whitefish salad to their brunch for two, which is an original in desert dining, as it includes two smoked fish selections, two bagels, fresh whipped cream, potato salad, creamed herring, and creamed coleslaw which brings me to Jay’s eight soups, from traditional Chicken in the Pot www.desertstarweekly.com

(please allow 25 minutes preparation time) and Sweet & Sour Cabbage which is the closest to my grandmother’s version I have ever tasted. While I haven’t delved into the lunch or dinner menu pages as yet, I must Add J’s Early Specials ( six choices ), such as a roasted half chicken and beef brisket available for dinner, which is only $15 per person from 4 pm to 6 pm daily (chicken soup included by the way). Their Nosh Menu, available during Happy Hour from 3 pm to 6 pm daily, takes the cake; however, they take it. Choices range from $6 to $10. Consider The Rubinski Fries, pastrami, and corned beef topped with melted Swiss cheese, sauerkraut,

Russian dressing, and the fried chicken breast sandwich ( $10) served with French fries. Next on my menu will be a review of J’s bakery, revealing a range of baked masterpieces, from pecan caramel cheesecake to noodle kugel with personality. Watch out for rental scams when planning a party

message someone through a social media account that seems professional. Either way, the “vendor” promises to reserve your rental for the date you need it – if you pay a deposit first. They may also require you to fill out a contact form with your details. The date of your party arrives, and your rental tent, furniture, or other supplies don’t come. At this point, the “vendor” may tell you they’ve had an emergency and can’t deliver on their promise. However, the scammers will disappear completely when you ask for your money back. Other times, you can’t contact the rental company at all. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (855) 976-3916 or visit this Internet Web site https:// tracker.auction.com/sb1079, using the file number assigned to this case FHAD.077-273. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 976-3916, or visit this internet website https://tracker.auction.com/ sb1079, using the file number assigned to this case FHAD.077-273 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of the outstanding lien that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-477-7869, or visit this internet Web site www. stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 85848. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www.STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 85848 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid; by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code; so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. How to Create Connections with Your Child’s Teacher

By Desert Star Staff A new school year can feel like uncharted territory for children, parents, and teachers alike as they learn new things and meet unfamiliar faces. Building a relationship with your child’s teacher can help create a positive school experience for everyone involved. Teachers who connect with their classroom families help families feel seen, heard, and represented in the classroom. “When parents and teachers connect, they can create a stronger support system,” said Tyreca Elliott from KinderCare’s education team. “Bridging the gap between home and school gives children continuity, improves academic outcomes, and nurtures children’s social and emotional wellbeing. When families and teachers work together, children can succeed.” Building connections with teachers open lines of communication between home and school, allowing families to learn about their child’s day and helping

teachers feel supported. Consider these three tips from KinderCare teachers to help families create connections and build trust and collaboration with their child’s teacher. 1. Be Intentional. Ruby Villarreal, a preschool teacher of nearly 30 years, suggests meeting with your child’s teacher before the first day of school to introduce your child and your family. Share your child’s previous school experience, likes and dislikes, and any home issues that may impact your child’s mood or behavior, such as a new sibling, recent move, or divorce. Raise any concerns you may have - no matter how big or small. Your child is the teacher’s priority too, and they might have some tips and tricks to help you help your child. 2. Communicate About Communications. Dropoff and pick-up times can sometimes be too busy for more than a “hi” or “bye.” Ask your child’s teacher how they like to t communicate, and share your preference, too.

Let the teacher know if you would like a phone call during a lunch break for a quick update about your child or if you’d instead communicate via email or the school’s app. 3. Make a Big Difference with Little Chats. During pick up or drop off, try to leave time for a brief conversation. This could be a quick chat about

something fun your child did over the weekend or why they might be having a tough day. It could also mean asking, “What can I ask my child about on the way home?” or finding out about activities you could do to help your child keep learning at home. “Learning is a partnership between families and school,”

said Quiana Smith, a 15year prekindergarten teacher. “Your child will be excited about school and learning when he or she knows you’re excited about it, too.” To learn more about how to create connections between home and school, visit kindercare. com. Family Features
