CHP Fourth of July Weekend Enforcement Campaign Starts Today
NBC City News Services California Highway Patrol officers will be ramping up patrols on state highways and roads in Riverside County starting Friday to catch drunk and drug-impaired drivers as part of the agency’s annual Fourth of July crackdown. The CHP’s “maximum enforcement period” will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and conclude at 11:59 p.m. Monday, during which all available officers will hit the streets for targeted patrols. “Saving lives is a priority for our officers,” CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said. “Motorists will help make everyone’s holiday safer on the road by observing the speed limits, avoiding distractions, staying sober, practicing patience and being
courteous to other drivers.” The Beaumont, Blythe, Indio, Riverside and Temecula CHP stations will deploy on Inland Empire freeways, highways and unincorporated roads for the campaign. Ray said the objective is to send a zero-tolerance message to impaired drivers and all traffic violators. “Officers will be looking for anyone who is speeding or … posing a danger on the roadways,” she said. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and municipal police departments throughout the county will be carrying out targeted patrols of their own to snare DUI suspects. Source: NBC Palm Springs

Navigating Your Health Over 65 By Desert Star Staff Taking care of your health, especially over age 65, requires an understanding of your personal needs. Proper medical care isn’t one-size-fitsall, so finding the right services and providers may take some research and thoughtful consideration as it relates to your unique circumstances. Consider these tips from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to find the right care for you: Stay on top of your health. An important part of managing your health is being aware of any current medical concerns or those that might affect you in the near future. That’s why it’s important to stay on top of your health care needs – like preventive services that could help identify any issues early. Arming yourself with knowledge can help you be better prepared to make decisions about the type of doctors or health care providers you need and how they work with your health insurance. Shop around. Choosing a health care provider can be
time consuming and confusing. Medicare.gov makes it easy to find and compare providers like hospitals, home health agencies, doctors, nursing homes and other health care services in your area that accept Medicare. On your laptop, tablet or mobile device, enter your location to search for local health care providers and services. A clean and uniform design makes it easy to review and compare providers. Know what to look for. It’s important to understand everything you’re considering when searching for care for yourself or a loved one. Search filters allow you to personalize your search based on what’s most important to you, like services offered, quality ratings, inspection reports and doctor affiliations. Other features include suggested next steps and checklists to help choose the best provider for you. Knowing what providers accept Medicare can also give you peace of mind. Plan ahead. Don’t put off researching your health care provider options. When you’re
Photo courtesy of Getty Images feeling well is typically the best time to consider your health care needs. With a clear mind, you’ll be able to thoroughly explore pros and cons about providers and facilities and get the information you need to find the best fit for you, such as practice locations, specialties, contact information and more. You can also save your favorite health care providers to refer to later when you’re logged into
your online Medicare account. Make your wishes known. Whether you’re planning ahead for yourself or finding care for a loved one, it’s important to share your preferences with others who are part of your care team. This might include sharing which doctors you like, what hospital you prefer or selecting a nursing home close to family and friends. Planning for medical care
can seem like a challenge. By keeping tabs on your health and using available tools to research your options and compare providers, like the resources at Medicare. gov, you can create a plan that best fits your needs. Paid for by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Family Features

The Summer of Road Trips 5 tips to make your 2021 road trips successful and safe
I
FAMILY FEATURES
t’s officially summer road trip season, which means it’s time to pack your bags, pick a destination on the map and go. According to the U.S. Travel Association, while nearly 9 in 10 American travelers have plans to travel in the next six months, it won’t be overseas. With cities starting to loosen travel restrictions and more parks reopening, this summer offers the perfect opportunity to visit places you’ve always wanted to see and the people you’ve missed the most. As you get ready to pile into your car, there are a few things you should check to make sure your vehicle is ready to face both the miles and the elements. Automotive DIY experts Emily Reeves and ChrisFix recommend these tips before you step on the gas. Check your oil. Motor oil is the lifeblood of your car – it keeps your engine running smoothly and reduces wear and tear caused by the open road. For those driving older cars, it could be the determining factor between keeping your engine intact or a costly trip to the repair shop. Make sure you have the correct level of oil and that it’s fresh. Your vehicle should have a dipstick to help check the level, and the owner’s manual should contain details on when it’s time to change it.

Keep your engine cool. Coolant is crucial to keeping your car cool during your trip. It prevents your engine from overheating and protects it from the extreme temperatures that come with operating your vehicle. This includes extended time on hot pavement or stop-and-go traffic when passing through bigger cities. Also, when using your air conditioning, you are putting extra strain on the cooling system, so making sure it is in good shape is important to keep you cool as well. “I recommend PEAK 10x Antifreeze & Coolant as it not only helps keep your engine from overheating, but also has additive properties that help keep your coolant system healthy,” Reeves said. “Based on extensive research and development, the product has been developed to ensure it protects from the elements while also flushing out any residue from previous use.” Kick your tires. Make sure your tires have tread and appropriate air pressure. If they’re too low it, could create drag, which decreases fuel mileage and can wear the tires out. Also be sure to check the air pressure in your spare.

Keep the bugs and rain away. It’s important to ensure you have enough washer fluid and your windshield wiper blades are intact should you drive into a swarm of bugs or a surprise torrential rainstorm. “Maintaining clear visibility is extremely important when driving, whether it be keeping your windows clean or being able to see the road through rain,” ChrisFix said. “Keep your eyes on the road by using PEAK’s +32 BugCleaner Windshield Wash or +32 Summer Windshield Wash to help remove bugs and dirt from the glass.” Pack the essentials. Should the worst situation arise and you need an immediate fix, having car care essentials on-hand is a time and money saver. Packing extra washer fluid, coolant, a portable toolbox, tire patching solutions and a first aid kit can help avoid an emergency. While it can be a little costly upfront, a small jump starter kit earns its dividends should you stall out. For additional insights on how to maximize your car’s potential, visit peakauto.com.

Digital Wallets Becoming Favorite Target for Online Scammers By Mark Richardson/PNS Many Arizonans began using peer-to-peer payment apps - also called digital wallets - to pay for goods and services or their share of a dinner bill during the pandemic. But consumer advocates report as the use of apps such as PayPal, Venmo and Zelle have increased, so have the number of consumer complaints. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Complaint Database, the number of gripes about P2P apps has almost doubled over the past 12 months. Fund. He said users who don’t understand how the apps work can lose money. “People should understand the money is gone instantly when you push the button, and the money leaves your account,” said Mierzwinski. “It will rarely come back, and people don’t realize whoosh, it’s gone.” Mierzwinski said the most common issues listed in the report - Virtual Wallets, Real Complaints - are problems managing, opening, closing accounts, fraud or scams, and issues with payments, including unauthorized transactions. He said consumers have fewer legal rights with digital wallets than using debit or credit cards and emphasized that most P2P apps are not designed for retail shopping or buying merchandise online. “Consumers should use it for sharing a payment for a gift with their friends or coworkers, people that they trust,” said Mierzwinski. “They should not use it to buy things from strangers. So I certainly wouldn’t use it
A new report warns consumers that payments using peer-to-peer apps such as Zelle or Venmo can cause you to lose money if you don’t set them up correctly. (antonioguilliam/Adobe Stock) on Craigslist or eBay or any of those kinds of services.” He said by setting up the account properly and double-checking where you send payments, users can avoid many pitfalls of using digital wallets. “Do you realize your money is leaving your account, and it’s probably not coming back?” said
Mierzwinski. “So make sure user names are typed correctly, make sure you’re only using the account with friends and set your security and privacy settings tight. Set them to ‘private’; don’t set them to ‘public.’” Mierzwinski said it’s a good idea to put a small amount of funds in an account separate from your main
bank account and use it for peer-to-peer transactions. He said that limits the amount of money you can lose if something goes wrong. Karla Bonoff Signs With Melody Place LLC
By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, TN – RIAA Gold-certified recording artist and hit songwriter Karla Bonoff signed a recording agreement with Melody Place LLC, based in Nashville, TN. Melody Place President and noted producer (Jimmy Webb, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Mathis) Fred Mollin says, “It has been one of my great dreams to work with Karla, and with the solid concept that we are bringing to the album, it shows that dreams do come true.” Bonoff goes into the studio with Mollin in August to begin recording a new album with an anticipated release date of Q1, 2022. Since the early 1970s, Bonoff has been a prolific figure in music, writing songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt (“Someone To Lay Down Beside Me,” “Lose Again,” “If He’s Ever Near”), Bonnie Raitt (“Home”), Wynonna Judd (“Tell Me Why”), Lynn Anderson (“Isn’t It Always Love”) and many others. In 1977, Bonoff released her debut, self-titled solo album, recording many of her compositions, previously
released and made famous by some of the above artists. Stephen Holden, writing for Rolling Stone, called the album “an impressive debut” and concluded that “the consistency of the material confirms a major writing talent; the performances show a promising singer.” Her most significant commercial chart success came with her 3rd album, Wild Heart of the Young, July 2, 2021
released in 1982. The album spawned a Top 40 single, “Personally,” peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. In 1984, Bonoff recorded “Somebody’s Eyes,” featured on the film soundtrack to the hit ‘80s film, Footloose. Ten years later, she contributed “Standing Right Next To Me,” a duet with Vince Gill for the soundtrack to the film 8 Seconds. In the subsequent
decades, Bonoff has recorded a total of 6 studio solo albums, one live album, three compilation projects and toured internationally to great acclaim. This latest undertaking will only highlight her evergrowing talent as a multihyphenate force in the music business and the true definition of a timeless artist. A
lthough the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down, the rapid development of multiple vaccines has spurred hope that treatments – or even potential cures – may be found for other devastating conditions. One such candidate is Alzheimer’s Disease.
Understanding Alzheimer’s The Alzheimer’s Association defines the disease as a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior. While some degree of memory loss is common with age, Alzheimer’s symptoms are significant enough to affect a person’s daily life and typically only grow worse over time. Early signs of Alzheimer’s include trouble remembering new information, solving problems or completing familiar tasks. As the disease progresses, disorientation, confusion, significant memory loss and changes in mood or behavior may become apparent. Physical symptoms may include difficulty speaking, swallowing or walking.
Impact of Alzheimer’s
Among people aged 65 and older, 1 in 9 (11.3%) has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, meaning more than 6 million Americans live with it. Worldwide, the World Health Organization estimates there are nearly 50 million people living with dementia, and Alzheimer’s likely accounts for 60-70% of those. By 2050, this number could rise as high as 13 million. Less commonly noted are the numbers of early-onset (under 65 years old) Alzheimer’s patients within those figures. Up to 9% of
global Alzheimer’s cases are believed to be early onset, according to the World Health Organization. According to a Harvard School of Public Health survey, Alzheimer’s is second only to cancer among America’s most feared diseases. However, data from the Alzheimer’s Association shows Alzheimer’s is the sixthleading cause of death in the United States, a rate higher than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Beyond the personal impact for those battling the disease and their loved ones, Alzheimer’s Disease also takes a significant economic toll. The Alzheimer’s Association predicts that in 2021, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the nation $355 billion. By 2050, these costs could exceed $1 trillion if no permanent treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s is found. At the same time, more than 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, an estimated 15.3 billion hours of care, valued at nearly $257 billion.
Treatment Options
While there hasn’t been enough significant progress in discovering a treatment or cure in the more than 100 years since Alzheimer’s was first identified in 1906, early diagnosis and treatment may improve the quality of life for patients. The disease affects each patient differently, so therapies vary widely depending on how far it has progressed and which symptoms are most prevalent. Some therapeutic approaches can address symptoms like sleep disruption and behavior while medication may be beneficial for treating other symptoms. Founded in 2016 by Milton “Todd” Ault III, Alzamend Neuro, a preclinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, has been actively
seeking a cure for Alzheimer’s and concentrates on researching and funding novel products for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and psychiatric disorders. With two products currently in development, the company aims to bring these potential therapies to market at a reasonable cost as quickly as possible. Ault’s stepfather is currently battling Alzheimer’s, his mother-in-law died from the disease and he has three other family members suffering through it. “Even though work has been done to find a cure for Alzheimer’s, to me it hasn’t been a full-court press,” said Ault, whose many personal encounters with Alzheimer’s have further fueled his passion to find a cure. “While there are no profound treatments today for Alzheimer’s disease, we believe we can change that.”
Milton “Todd” Ault III, founder of Alzamend Neuro
To learn more about treatments and therapies in development visit alzamend.com.
Some basic changes in the approach to disease research could accelerate progress for diseases like Alzheimer’s, said Milton “Todd” Ault III, founder of Alzamend Neuro. Ault believes recent advancements in vaccines and medical technology, combined with these five approaches, can help advance the search for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
Encourage public-private partnerships
The collaboration of government agencies and private industries was integral to the COVID-19 vaccine development. The cross-industry partnerships enabled a vaccine to get to market in less than one year despite detractors. Ault believes this model can be replicated for other diseases and conditions.
Diversify the search
Because of its complexity, a cure for Alzheimer’s will require expertise from a broad range of organizations including health and defense, biopharmaceutical firms, academic experts and those involved in Operation Warp Speed, the federal effort that supported multiple COVID-19 vaccine candidates simultaneously to expedite development.
Share standards and data
Focusing on a shared goal is vital to succeeding. This means looking for ways to share standards and collaborate with colleagues and competitors regardless of proprietary data, patents and other limitations.
Become the catalyst for a cure
When political will and government funding are insufficient or unable to drive change, the private sector can inspire action. “The progress we are making is a result of the private investment dollars we secured and the way we have applied strategy and tenacity that comes from a successful business record,” Ault said.
Learning from past successes
Aside from the result, there is a great deal to learn from the successful development of past drugs and vaccines. Social awareness and cultural demand are potential ways to stimulate faster production and approvals between public and private entities. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

The dire consequences of a research animal shortage
By Matthew R. Bailey Scientists are concerned that new Covid-19 variants popping up around the globe will evolve and could thwart the treatments they’ve developed. Researchers are racing to develop new coronavirus vaccines and treatments, but many of them are running into a problem -- a shortage of monkeys. Medical advancement could grind to a halt unless the government acts to preserve our scientists’ access to nonhuman primates. Monkeys are essential for biomedical research. They’re the most similar nonhuman models to human research subjects. Rhesus macaques, the species most commonly engaged in medical research, share roughly 93% of their DNA with humans. In the case of Covid-19, scientists were able to glean how the coronavirus attacked the lungs and respiratory system by studying its expression in monkeys. It’s no wonder the vaccines Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech, and Johnson & Johnson developed all
have their genesis in research in nonhuman primates. But the pandemic has made nonhuman primates a scarce resource. At the beginning of the outbreak, China, the world’s top source of research monkeys, halted exports. That put many U.S. labs in a difficult spot. China provided more than 60% of the nearly 34,000 nonhuman primates that entered the United States in 2019. China probably won’t resume exports anytime soon since its scientists now face a shortfall. Just a few labs in Shanghai alone need nearly 3,000 more monkeys. Experts predict the Chinese shortage will grow 15% a year over the next five years. The message propagated by animal rights activists is that nonhuman primates are not essential for developing Covid-19 vaccines. Heeding their propaganda could spell disaster for the health and safety of Americans. The U.S. government has a few options for addressing the research monkey

shortage. It could work with other countries to increase the supply. The promise of more collaboration with U.S. scientists could prompt other countries to export more of them to the United States. Officials could also pressure airlines to transport more monkeys from abroad. Most have bowed to pressure from animal rights groups and refuse to transport research animals. Correcting misinformation about animal research would also help. PETA and other animal activists have been trying to convince the public
that research with monkeys is not just useless but inhumane and unethical. One solution may be to boost funding for primate research in America. Tens of millions of additional dollars represent a rounding error in the federal budget. But that investment would ensure U.S. scientists can quickly respond to future health crises. The mRNA technology employed by Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech and the viral vector technology used by Johnson & Johnson show potential against other diseases like cancer, multiple

sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, and even future coronaviruses. Repurposing these vaccines for other diseases will require additional research in nonhuman primates. CA Budget Opens Medi-Cal to Undocumented, Low-Income Seniors By Suzanne Potter/PNS SACRAMENTO, Calif. -The California State Assembly is set to approve a budget bill tomorrow to make California the first state in the nation to expand Medicaid health coverage to people age 50 and over who qualify, regardless of their immigration status. The expansion would allocate up to $1.3 billion for the program. Jose Torres Casillas, the legislative associate for the advocacy group Health Access California, spearheaded the Health4All campaign with the California Immigrant Policy Center, predicts it will reduce suffering for many Californians. “This is a groundbreaking thing,” Casillas asserted. “It’d be beginning May 1, 2022; rough estimates give it about 235,000 that would be newly eligible for the benefit.” Opponents of the change argued taxpayer dollars would be better spent directly on U.S. citizens. Still,
advocates of the expansion countered the state already pays when undocumented folks end up in emergency rooms, so it’s more efficient to provide comprehensive, preventive care. Jonatan Gutierrez, an immigration advocate from Santa Ana, said his undocumented parents have had to forgo medical care for chronic conditions like diabetes. “Sometimes, we’ll put aside our health problems because we are worried about the hospital bill, or we don’t have money for medicine at the moment,” Gutierrez explained. Cynthia Buiza, executive director of the California Immigrant Policy Center, said essential undocumented workers were some of the real heroes of the pandemic. Yet, they were only eligible for emergency health care. “Now is our opportunity to envision and create a state where everyone has a chance to thrive,” Buiza contended.

Ares Pours More Than $1B Into Sports Investments
By Desert Star Staff Sports are opening the door to private equity, and Ares Management is walking in. The Los Angelesbased investment firm with $227 billion in assets under management has invested more than $1 billion into sports teams, leagues, and media in the last six months. That sum doesn’t include Ares’ cofounder and chairman Tony Ressler’s principal ownership of the Atlanta Hawks.
This week, Atletico Madrid raised $216.9 million from Ares, which now holds a 34% stake in the LaLiga champions. That money will go in part to developing the area around the club’s stadium – a recent trend among major sports teams. Ares was part of a consortium led by MSP Sports Capital that acquired a 15% stake in McLaren Racing as part of a $255.4 million investment. The financiers valued McLaren at $773.1
million. The stake could rise to 33% by the end of 2022. Ares has lent an undisclosed amount to: The San Diego Padres The Ottawa Senators Rugby Australia The Professional Fighters League The firm also provided a $100 million credit line to help Rawlings fund its acquisition of Easton Diamond Sports and acquired a minority stake in Meadowlark Media.

FAMILY FEATURES
lthough a growing number of businesses are reopening their in-person office spaces, many are maintaining remote workforces or implementing hybrid schedules. While the shift signals steps toward more traditional, familiar work environments, it also presents some challenges. If your temporary remote work schedule is headed for a more permanent status, or if you’ll be straddling both worlds indefinitely, it may be time to make some changes to ensure your home office is up to the task.
Do Your Research
Before making any significant purchases, do some digging to learn all you can about the devices and equipment you’re considering, especially if you’re planning to create an efficient setup using smart technology. While many devices work well together, that’s not always the case. You should also be aware of the controls and how you’ll manage smart functions; choose the setup that’s most intuitive for you and fits best with your workflow.
Features: A basic printer simply prints documents, but if you need to also copy, scan and fax, there are many all-inone models that offer those capabilities, as well. Inkjet vs. Laser: If you normally print text with few images, opt for a laser printer. If your work involves a lot of graphics and photos, an inkjet printer may be a better choice. Supplies: Depending on how much you print, you may go through a lot of ink, and the cost can add up. Comparison
shop to find the best ink prices, which brands offer features like recycling for used cartridges and whether you can access a subscription to ensure you never run out of ink or paper before a big deadline. Cord Connections: Some printers require a wired connection to your computer while others can connect to your computer using Wi-Fi or an app like HP Smart App. Aside from personal preference, your decision may hinge on the space you have available.
Identify Unique Requirements

A successful home office needs to reflect the needs of your particular job, so you may need special equipment or tools specific to your role. For example, 63% of desk-based workers said having to collaborate with colleagues virtually is either a challenge or major barrier to working remotely, with 24% saying it is a major barrier, according to a survey by HP. If your job typically relies heavily on collaboration, you’ll probably need a video conference setup. Another common challenge: access to a printer. More than one-fourth of desk-based workers ranked having access to the office printer among the top three things they miss about the in-office experience. If your home office isn’t already equipped with a printer or you need to upgrade, you may be wondering where to start. Convenience is more important than everything else in a home printer, according to survey participants. You may also agree with the 52% of remote workers who indicated that if they were considering buying a new home printer in the future, it must be easy to use, and a simple set-up process was a leading demand. One convenient and simple option is the HP+ smart printing system, which is powered by a cloud-based ecosystem with enhanced security, productivity and sustainability features. Paired with an optional Instant Ink automated supplies replenishment subscription, an environmentally friendly solution to ensure you never run out of ink or toner, the system offers a perfect solution for hybrid workers and small businesses.

Start Small
Establishing a well-equipped home office takes time and money. Identify the equipment and essentials you need to get started then create a wish list with other items you can add over time. As you’re setting priorities, remember it can pay to invest in quality products from the get-go. If you have to make repairs, or upgrade or replacement equipment, you may actually spend more in the long run.
Get a Strong Network
At the office, you probably had an IT department responsible for keeping your network up and running. At home, you may still have some level of tech support, but your home connectivity is likely your own concern. A good network starts with a quality router. You’ll also want to shop for an internet provider with the best speeds at a rate you can afford. Just be conscious of any restrictions on volume or speed that could hinder your ability to do your job.
Keep Security in Mind
Smart devices collect a lot of information and because much of the technology is still so new, it’s relatively vulnerable to hackers. Get familiar with privacy settings on all your devices and adjust accordingly so you’re not divulging proprietary data or other information that could be used inappropriately.
