King of the Heap US named world’s top trash maker, risks being buried in its own garbage By Desert Star Staff While the US makes up 4% of the world’s population it produces 12% of its trash, more than both China and India. To make matters worse, it is also terrible at managing its garbage output, recycling a small percentage of waste. As trash continues to
saturate the world’s oceans and mount in developing countries where waste from the first world is offshored, the US could be headed for crisis as more and more countries begin to refuse to take America’s mountains of garbage. Unlike Germany, where 68% of waste is
reused, the US recycles 35%, making it particularly dependent on shipping the problem elsewhere, according to a new report (https:// www.maplecroft.com) “The US is the only developed nation whose waste generation outstrips its ability to recycle,
NBC PS News Staff An overnight cooling center that opened this week in Palm Springs will move to a new location starting Tuesday evening, according to a city spokeswoman. The cooling center that was at the Demuth Community Center will move to a city facility at 225 S. El Cielo Road, spokeswoman Amy Blaisdell said. Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs and Cathedral City formed a partnership with Riverside County to provide three overnight cooling centers for anyone in need in the western Coachella Valley. The centers opened Monday and will continue
operating through Sept. 30. The centers will operate seven days a week from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The other two cooling centers are located at: — World Life of Fellowship Center, 66290 Estrella Ave., Desert Hot Springs; and — Community Presbyterian Church, 38088 Chuperosa Lane, Cathedral City. The announcement of the cooling centers partnership was made following the “successful trial” of an overnight cooling center in Palm Springs in June, according to a statement from the office of Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. The county’s Homeless Emergency Aid Program was contributing $200,000
for the startup costs of the cooling centers, according to Perez’s office. In addition to providing overnight shelter, the cooling centers act as access points for people experiencing homelessness to receive social services. The Desert Healthcare District Foundation has also set up a Summer Homeless Survival Fund to solicit donations for operational expenses, and its board of directors agreed to establish a $50,000 matching fund program for any donations received. underscoring a shortage of political will and investment in infrastructure,” the report said. The disturbing statistics come from research by the UK-based global risk and strategic consulting firm Maplecroft, who measured the waste generation and recycling performance of 194

Birth Workers Call for Expanded Coverage of Pregnant Women For Kenda Sutton-El, who runs Birth in Color RVA, a network of doulas and birth workers, part of the problem is lack of access to care. “Medicaid typically stops at day 42 after delivering your baby, so these are the factors,” she said. “Postpartum depression doesn’t peak until almost 120 days. So, why aren’t we allowing them to have Medicaid up until a year after giving childbirth?” The Medicaid agency said it will work with other state agencies and managed-care organizations to strengthen early-childhood interventions, and launch an outreach campaign this fall to reach From 2009 to 2013, African-American maternal mortality rates ranged from 60 to 105 deaths per every 100,000 live more pregnant women. births, compared with 27 to 35 deaths among white women, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Campaign Makes Headway Targeting High Prescription Prices By Desert Star Staff DENVER - AARP is making headway on its federaland state-level campaign to stop drug companies from price gouging. Bob Murphy, AARP Colorado state director, said prescription drug prices are a leading driver of rising healthcare costs year over year, and U.S. consumers frequently pay twice as much for the same medicine as do patients in other countries. He said it’s time to implement some common-sense solutions. “We do think that Medicare should be allowed to negotiate prescription prices; they currently are prohibited by law from doing that,” he said. “That seems like a very reasonable first step.” In 2015, Medicare beneficiaries spent $27 billion
in out-of-pocket drug costs. Murphy noted that Medicare beneficiaries have a median income of $26,000, but many pay more than $13,000 a year out-of-pocket for medicine. Drug companies long have argued that high profit margins are necessary to fuel research and development, and have said those investments have led to significant innovations. AARP also is targeting so-called “pay-for-delay” deals, where companies pay generic competitors to keep lower-priced drugs off the market. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the deals cost consumers and taxpayers $3.5 billion in higher drug costs every year. Murphy said he understands that it takes a lot of research and development to develop ground-breaking medicines.
“But that doesn’t really answer the question of why the same drugs are less expensive in other countries,” he said, “and why they continue to have these cozy little deals between them to make sure there’s no competition.” AARP Colorado was a major force behind the passage of Senate Bill 5, which would allow the state to import less expensive pharmaceuticals from Canada. The measure, signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis, requires approval from the Trump administration before going into effect. More information on the campaign is online at aarp.org. The United States spends twice as much on health care as do other comparable countries, largely because of rising drug prices. (Galatas)
Bipartisan bill aims to tackle rampant child porn sharing By Desert Star Staff Congress is weighing up a bipartisan bill to crack down on the sharing of child porn on Defense Department computers after a watchdog group found the Pentagon’s network ranked among the top US ISPs for sharing the vile content. “The notion that the Department of Defense’s network and Pentagon-issued computers may be used to view, create, or circulate such horrifying images is a shameful disgrace, and one we must fight head on,” Abigail Spanberger (D-Virginia) said in a statement on Tuesday as she and co-sponsor Mark Meadows (R-N. Carolina) introduced

the End National Defense Network Abuse (END Network Abuse) Act in the House. The Defense Criminal Investigative Services (DCIS) will receive training in how to root out and successfully prosecute those using Defense Department equipment to access and trade child porn under the new legislation. The bill also integrates DCIS into a “multi-jurisdictional task force” with “federal, state, and local law enforcement,” social services, and child protection groups to help victims of child sexual exploitation – and to roll back the tide of filth engulfing Defense Department networks. Congress has known for
at least a decade that child porn trading on Defense Department computers was a problem. Immigration and Customs Enforcement identified 5,200 people “subscribed to websites that were known to contain child pornography” during 2008’s Project Flicker investigation, including hundreds of individuals “affiliated with” the Defense Department, some of whom even used their government email addresses and military post boxes to register on the offending websites. Worryingly, dozens possessed some form of security clearance. While a handful of the offenders caught in Project July 5, 2019
Flicker received jail sentences, thousands more – up to 80 percent of those identified in the ICE report – did not, as “combating child pornography was not one of DCIS’ investigative priorities,” Spanberger and Meadows lament. This investigative blind spot leaves the Pentagon vulnerable to “blackmail, bribery, and other threats,” should employees with high security clearances become compromised through their weakness for child porn or other illicit activities conducted over Defense Department computers. The Defense Department’s network ranked 19th out of
2,891 internet service providers for peer-to-peer trading of child porn in 2018, according to the National Criminal Justice Training Center, suggesting the problem has only gotten worse in the 10 years since Project Flicker wrapped up. A Senate version of the END Network Abuse Act was introduced in May by Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii). While neither chamber of Congress has set aside dates to discuss the measure, sponsors plan to pass it “both as individual bills and as amendments” to other bills, according to the Hill. Representatives TJ Cox (D-California) and Anna Eshoo (D-California) have also signed on to the House bill as co-sponsors. www.desertstarweekly.com
Blaze Burns More Than 250 Acres In Riverside Park
NBC PS News Staff A wildfire that broke out Tuesday in a south Riverside preserve blackened 273 acres and damaged a home before being fully contained. The non-injury blaze was reported about 12:30 p.m. on the east side of Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park, facing Speyside Road, according to the Riverside Fire Department. Crews from Riverside, Corona, Riverside County and other agencies deployed on the brusher, working to contain it with the aid of Cal Fire water- dropping helicopters. The fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped at 2:45 p.m., and the blaze was declared 100% contained just before 4 p.m.

Riverside Fire Department Division Chief Dave Bakas told City News Service investigators had been summoned to look at where the flames originated to identify a potential source. Bakas did not know whether arson might have been the cause. One property on Haddington Drive sustained minor damage when embers flew onto the rear deck, burning the wood, according to reports from the scene. Firefighters doused the flames and removed the charred pieces. Flames also reached shrubs and a palm tree adjacent to another property, but the home itself was not damaged. At one-point, Riverside motorcycle police officers were assisting fire crews with hosing down shrubbery adjacent to homes
on Lochmoor Drive. A voluntary evacuation warning was issued for residents in the area of Lochmoor Drive and Kirkmichael Circle, but the advisory was canceled an hour later. Police closed Central Avenue, between Canyon Crest and Lochmoor drives, as a safety precaution. The heavily used corridor was expected to re- open before nightfall. Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park is about 1,400 acres in size and features a riparian channel, mountain biking and hiking trails through a series of rocky hills. The last significant fire occurred there on July 4, 2013, burning 130 acres in the middle of the park. Source: NBC Palm Springs
Cockroach ‘superbugs’ evolve to resist pesticides By Desert Star Staff Cockroaches will soon be impossible to kill with standard pesticides, as they can develop cross-resistance to poisons they’ve never encountered within a single generation, an ominous new study has found. German cockroaches – the small, quick-scurrying type whose traces can be found in 85 percent of US urban homes – are rapidly becoming impervious to pesticide chemicals, developing cross-resistance to a variety of insecticides within a single generation, a study published in Scientific Reports has demonstrated. And even the researchers who conducted the experiment are creeped out by the evolutionary capabilities of the ubiquitous six-legged pests. “We didn’t have a clue that something like that could happen this fast,” Michael Scharf, chair of the Entomology Department at Purdue University and coauthor of the study, said in a statement last week. “Cockroaches developing
resistance to multiple classes of insecticides at once will make controlling these pests almost impossible with chemicals alone.” This is a previously unrealized challenge in cockroaches. One experiment in which 10 percent of cockroaches started off resistant to a particular pesticide actually saw populations grow over the six months during which the researchers sprayed, a disconcerting result in itself. But it was the multichemical experimental groups that really caused a stir – cockroaches who survived treatment with one insecticide developed immunity not just to that chemical, but to other chemicals they hadn’t even been exposed to – increasing their resistance “four- to six-fold in just one generation,” Scharf marveled. Cockroach populations targeted with multiple chemicals also tended to spread out, infesting adjacent apartments to those being tested – so not only did
King of the Heap
total population numbers not decrease as they were expected to, but entire buildings fell to six-legged armies that were once content with smaller domains. Only when the roach population had next-to-no resistance to the chosen insecticide, and only that insecticide was used, were the researchers able to exterminate the persistent creatures. While exterminators frequently rotate the types of insecticide, they use on the job in case some roaches in a population are resistant to one class of chemical, the experiment’s results indicate they will have to step up their game enormously if they want to have any impact on Blattella germanica. Scharf, whose lab is partially funded by pest control company Orkin, recommended traps, vacuums and improved sanitation alongside frequently rotated chemical pesticides, apparently unwilling to acknowledge that the lowly cockroach had all but outsmarted the arrogant two-legger in terms
of chemical resistance. He even blamed “widespread availability of ‘over-thecounter’ consumer products” for increasing pesticide resistance among cockroach populations – even though resistance was observed to all insecticides, not just the “old-school” pyrethroid types that have been producing pesticide-resistant cockroaches since they came into fashion in the 1950s. Female German cockroaches may lay up to 400 eggs in a lifetime, and the insects’ 60-day lifespan makes for a quick-evolving species. They thrive in human habitats – particularly where food is prepared – and rely on humans for shelter in cold climates, hospitality they repay by spreading disease through their feces, shedding body parts, and triggering allergies in susceptible people. They also have wings – but at least the humans can take some small comfort in knowing the species “very rarely flies,” according to Orkin.

A Baffling “Mysterious Circumstances” on Stage at the Geffen Playhouse
Hugo Armstrong, Helen Sadler, Alan Tudyk & Leo-Marks. Photo by Jeff Lorch Instead of a “Who done it,” this production of “Mysterious Circumstances,” could be subtitled “Who is it?” My reason? To be revealed in time, so read on. Matt Shakman’s staging of Michael Mitnick’s play, which was inspired by David Grann’s article published in The New Yorker entitled: “Mysterious Circumstances: The Strange Death of a Sherlock Holmes Fanatic,” is technically quite extraordinary, beginning with a top of the line inventive set design by Brett J. Banakis. With excellent lighting by Elizabeth Harper, E. B. Brooks’ period costume design, and Kaitlyn Pietras and Jason H. Thompson’s projections, the production is quite delicious to watch with the overall look clearly Broadway caliber. Apparently based on true events occurring in 1894 and 2004, a writer by the name of Richard Lancelyn Green, well played by Alan Tudyk, who also plays Sherlock Holmes, is totally obsessed with all things Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, characterized by the talented Austin Durant. Doyle, of course, created, one of the most famous literary characters of all time. Green is doing research on a book covering the life and times of Doyle, detailing the circumstances under which this incredibly successful author lived. He is determined to hunt down a box that is rumored to contain letters written to Holmes by fans seeking all sorts of advice as well the scribe’s original writings, and other memorabilia. But be forewarned. Something is afoot as poor Mr. Green becomes the target of an assassination for reasons that still remain a mystery. Hence, the title “Mysterious Circumstances.” As a result of Doyle’s series of books, Sherlock

Holmes becomes bigger than life, with rumors circulating that the character might actually be a real person. Fan clubs sprouted up, one of which was called “The “Sherlockers.” Tired of all things Holmes, Doyle decides to kill him off by having him go over a waterfall in the northern Swiss Alps. A hue and cry springs up with people demanding that the super sleuth be brought back to life. Even the Prince of Wales writes a letter asking that this famous detective be resurrected. There is a candle-lit scene wherein Doyle systematically burns a bunch of papers which we are to assume are from the next installment where Holmes is dead. Where is the box you might ask? It is in safekeeping with his aging, wheelchair-bound daughter Dame Jean, beautifully played

by Helen Sadler who, like the rest of the cast, plays multiple roles. In my opinion, she is the only member of the cast who endowed her different characters with specific physical and vocal characteristics that set each one apart from the other. Now, what would Holmes be without his ever-devoted sidekick Watson, played by Ramiz Monsef, who also plays multiple roles. The other cast members playing different characters include Hugo Armstrong as The American, John Bobek as Chester, and Leo Marks as Smith. Now to the problems: Mitnick’s script is riddled with endless monologues, which in many cases do not drive the action forward, but instead, foists upon the audience, words, words, and more words beginning with the opening monologue by Tudyk
as the writer Mr. Green. You might get the idea by now that the action moves back and forth between the present and the past where the actors make speedy costume changes to become another character. For example, the writer, (Alan Tudyk) who, upon donning a hat and a cape, morphs into Sherlock Holmes. The scenes move back and forth between the writer and his friends, or scenes with Holmes and his daughter, or scenes with Holmes and Watson. If you’re confused, you’re not alone, as it was not easy to follow the parade of different characters. A flow chart would have been helpful. Regarding the double and triple roles the actors played, one wonders why in a city like Los Angeles, which is overflowing with actors who would give up their day jobs to be in a play, that these
multiple roles could not be filled with additional actors, which would have avoided a lot of confusion and splitsecond costume changes. That said, I would be remiss if I didn’t praise the ensemble for their highly professional, polished performances which, coupled with the eye-popping set, might be worth a trip to the Geffen Playhouse. “MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES” Geffen Playhouse Gil Cates Theater 10886 Le Conte Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90024 Run: Tuesday – Friday: 8:00 pm Saturday: 3:00 & 8:00 pm Sunday: 1:00 pm & 6:30 pm Closing: July 14, 2019 Tickets: $30-$120 Box Office 310.208.5454 www.geffenplayhouse.com

Summer Wine Savvy
By Desert Star Staff 3 ways to upgrade your summer sipping routine Rosé slushies. Spiked seltzers. Boozy ice pops. Has young adults’ quest for the next party gimmick led to soulless substitutes for real, quality wines? It’s not hard to find wines with well-balanced natural flavors, according to Leslie Sbrocco, author of “The Simple and Savvy Wine Guide.” She recommends looking for wine from different international regions, like Wines of Sicily, which guarantee value and quality, and are made from more than 400 wineries across the island. Sbrocco also recommends these wines and entertaining tips to make your spread the center of the party for all the right reasons. • Bring a balanced red to the barbecue. It’s an art to craft a truly balanced wine that needs nothing more to be enjoyed than a wine opener and an open mind. In fact, Sicilian red wines are crafted to be as lively and bold as the island itself. The icon of Sicilian wine-making and hero red grape, Nero d’Avola, balances elegance with drinkability and can range from royal ruby with aromas of strawberry and sour cherry to a more fullbodied red with sweet spices and cocoa. Whether it’s a ribeye or a spicy rack of ribs, Nero d’Avola can elevate a weeknight summer dinner on the patio to an elegant event. • Freshen up summer whites. Grillo, Sicily’s most famous indigenous white grape, with an aromatic bouquet and lively citrus notes, is like a pair of fresh linen pants. When paired with delectable bites like bruschetta, ceviche or a wellcrafted charcuterie board, Grillo pulls out the salinity and savory notes that come from grapes grown in close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. The other predominant yet fuller-bodied white wine grape from Sicily is Catarrato. With notes of ripe citrus and herbal flavors, it makes for a delicious counterpart to a seasonal vegetable spread. • Act like a sommelier.

Veterans Head to Louisville from Across U.S. for Wheelchair Games
By Desert Star Staff LOUISVILLE, Ky. Hundreds of veterans will be in Louisville next week to compete in the 39th annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games. Men and women with spinal-cord injuries, amputations and other impairments will compete in a variety of sports. U.S. Army veteran Ted Rake is coming from Indiana to be part of the games. Rake was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in his 40s, and lost function on one side of his body. He said watching other veterans compete in the Wheelchair Games a few years ago made a strong impression on him and how he views his own abilities. Rake said it changed his life. “I was watching the ‘Super G’ event, which is essentially like an advanced wheelchair course, and there was a guy there, there was a Marine, was missing part of his leg,” Rake said. “And he would fail, and he would fail and he would fail -
and then finally, he’d overcome the obstacle. And then he’d get to the next obstacle, and he’d fail, he’d fail, he’d fail and then he’d overcome it. And he finally finished it.” This year, Rake is competing in Boccia, bowling, archery, discus and shotput. He said many veterans train for years to be able to compete in the games. AARP Kentucky and Paralyzed Veterans of America are recruiting local volunteers to staff the events and cheer the athletes on. About 3,000 volunteers are needed; more information is online at wheelchairgames.org. Jennifer Purser, who directs the games, said more than 600 veterans participate in nearly 20 different sports. She said the games first began in the 1980s. “The Department of Veterans Affairs started this because there was such a need for adaptive sports to help with rehabilitation for injured veterans,” said Purser,
