Start the School Year Off Right
By Desert Star Staff As kids head back to school, it’s important to provide them with the necessary resources to succeed. As a parent, you can take steps to put your kids on the path toward a successful school year. To help your children put the best foot forward, consider these suggestions from The Salvation Army, which operates hundreds of lowcost after-school programs for kids of all ages in low-income neighborhoods across the country and understands the importance of setting children up for success all year. Get back into a routine. During the summer months, family routines tend to slide, especially morning rituals and bedtime habits. A few weeks before school starts, begin transitioning your way back to a normal school schedule. A gentle progression toward earlier bed and wake-up times is easier on kids physically and mentally. Try adjusting by 15 minutes each day until you
reach the optimal schedule for your family. Remember that routines aren’t just about the clock, though. If there are certain steps that are part of the school year routine, such as packing lunches and laying out clothes for the next day before bed, make those part of your transition plan, too.
idea to research resources in your area that can help provide support outside the classroom. Your school likely has some options available, but it’s a good idea to also look into tutoring programs and other community services that encourage literacy and study skills as well as provide one-on-one Set a good example. assistance with homework Kids learn important behavioral and school assignments. lessons by watching the adults in their lives. The back-to-school season provides many opportunities to demonstrate compassion and social responsibility. For example, giving back to an organization like The Salvation Army helps provide funding for programs that support the educational needs of children who otherwise may not have access to the same resources.
Get organized. The first few weeks of school typically bring plenty of change and adjustment. You can help manage the stress by creating some structure. Use a wall calendar to keep track of school start and dismissal times, bus pick-up and dropoff times, after school activities and other appointments. Review lunch menus and plan ahead so you’re not finding out at bedtime that you need to pack a home lunch in the morning. Stock up on breakfast foods and make time to catch up on laundry before school begins so hunger and wayward socks don’t derail your mornings. Explore extracurricular programs. With the new school year comes numerous ways to enrich your kids’ social and cognitive development. Extra-curricular activities let kids continue practicing skills even after the school bell rings, but in a fun environment so they may not even realize they’re
still learning and cultivating healthy, safe relationships with friends. In addition to sports and clubs, a wide array of music and art education activities may be available that focus on everything from choir, band and dancing to drawing, writing and acting. Set goals. Begin the school year by encouraging your children to take ownership and pride in their learning. Talk about goals like reading a certain number of books each month or earning grades that reflect their highest potential. Get kids motivated by designing goal boards or charts that can serve as daily reminders and track their progress. For larger goals, consider setting milestones so they can celebrate progress along the way and stay motivated for a big finish. Casper Neighborhood a Finalist for Kindest Place in U.S. By Desert Star Staff CASPER, Wyo. – The Big Tree neighborhood on South Chestnut Street in Casper is one of 50 finalists in a national crowdsourced search for the Nicest Place in America. Jeremy Greenfield, a senior editor with Reader’s Digest, which is behind the effort, says in an era of cultural and political divides, the annual list puts a spotlight on places where people are kind and treat each other with respect. The Casper neighborhood stood out from more than 1,000 submissions because of how neighbors react after big snowstorms to make streets and sidewalks safe. “There is basically a race to see who can get out there early enough to snow blow the sidewalks, to snow blow the driveways, especially for those neighbors who maybe aren’t as mobile as

they used to be or have as much energy as they used to have,” Greenfield relates Neighbors make a similar race out of mowing each other’s lawns in the summer. Greenfield says stories from Wyoming and communities across the U.S. serve as a reminder that kindness is all around us, and if it’s not on your block it might be on the next block over. Polls to vote for the Nicest Place in America are open to the public online at RD.com/nicest. Votes must be cast by July 21. Greenfield says towns making this year’s list are not all wealthy enclaves. Stories include an addiction treatment center in Kansas, a food bank in Iowa, and a New Mexico town that greeted 1,600 asylum seekers it didn’t ask for with open arms. Greenfield says the project
is not just about inspiring readers, it’s about inspiring people to help change their community for the better. “You should really pay attention to what’s going on in this place, because it talks to something going on in the rest of the country, and it’s something that you can relate to, and hopefully it will inspire you to take an active role in making your community a ‘nicest place,’” he states. One of the project’s first stories involves a Rhode Island children’s hospital known for treating very sick children. At closing time, a staffer told a child who didn’t want to be alone at night that he’d flash the light on his bike, to show he’d be back next day when the child underwent treatment. The child responded by turning his room lights on and off. Now, every night around 8 o’clock, local businesses July 12, 2019

a ritual that Greenfield says has since spread to hospitals across the country.

Immigrant Rights Hotline Offers Broad Mental Health Benefits
By Desert Star Staff DENVER – As the Trump administration continues to threaten a roundup of undocumented immigrants, immigrant rights organizations in Colorado say they’re ready. Volunteers staffing a tollfree rapid response hotline are helping communities respond to raids by reminding them of their legal rights and sharing information and resources. That hotline number is 844864-8341, and Cristian SolanoCordóva, communications manager for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, encourages people at risk to call and make a family safety plan. Cordova says many of the hotline’s volunteers also are counselors.

“Some of them are connected with mental health institutions in their area, all across Colorado,” he explains. “So we help people connect to legal representation and we help people connect to mental health services, which are often needed for some of these young kids.” Cordova points to studies showing that threats of family separation and detention can create toxic stress in children, long-term traumatization, and can blunt childhood development. In addition to announcements of imminent deportations, President Donald Trump also has proposed fines of $750 a day for immigrants under order of detention and has worked to block asylum seekers from reaching U.S soil. A kudo goes to dialect consultant Joshua Weinstein for the ring of authenticity in the actor’s vocal deliveries. The action takes place over one night and is neatly wrapped up, without an intermission, in 90 minutes. In a side bar note: I had the opportunity to chat briefly with McElwee before the production. When I asked him what attracted him to write a dark serio-comedy about the ‘IRA vs. the Black and Tans’ with its tension-filled, never ending, political war of attrition stories, he said he grew up listening to similar tales from his relatives. He had an itch to grow as an artist and enrich his resume... so he scratched that itch. The result is an impressive production from a new playwright/ director to keep an eye on.

“The Champions” AOC wants victorious US women’s world cup team to be paid twice what male players get
By Desert Star Staff Outspoken Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez congratulated the US women’s football team on their World Cup victory by calling for the players to be paid double the men’s rate. A penalty from Megan Rapinoe followed by a goal from Rose Lavelle saw the US women’s team beat the Netherlands on Sunday to take home their fourth Women’s World Cup trophy.
o sooner had the match ended than USA Today journalist Nancy Armour reported fans chanting “Equal pay!,” a reference to the ongoing gender discrimination lawsuit filed by the team against the US Soccer Federation, claiming they are paid 38 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn. “At this point, we shouldn’t even be asking for equal pay,” Ocasio-Cortez chimed in, possibly joking. “We
should demand they be paid at least twice as much.” Demands for at least equal pay have echoed over social media throughout the France 2019 event. Democrat politicians jumped aboard the bandwagon too, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanding equal pay following the victory on Sunday, and Hillary Clinton throwing in her two cents earlier on Friday. Supporters of equal –or even higher– pay argue that the
fellow outspoken Trump critic, Chuck Schumer, telling him: “We’re very happy to accept your invitation to come.” Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, said that she had invited the team to the Capitol after heeding calls from “both sides of the aisle.” Rapinoe had previously stated that she was “not going to the f***ing White House” if the US won the World Cup,
a statement which provoked ire from the president. “Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her [and] the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!” Trump tweeted. Trump appeared unwilling to delve into the subject when pressed by the media, saying that his administration hasn’t “really thought about it” and “we’ll look at that”.
‘We don’t want to go’
By Desert Star Staff The victorious US women’s soccer team will turn down any invitation to visit the White House, according to co-captain Megan Rapinoe, though she says they will take up an offer from Senate Democrats to visit Congress. Rapinoe, a prominent figure during the recent women’s World Cup for her performances on the pitch as well as a series of outspoken comments, repeated statements that emerged during the tournament in which she said that neither she nor her teammates have any interest in being invited to visit Trump at the White House. It is customary in US sports for successful teams to be granted an audience with the president, though this appears to have changed during the Trump administration as several high-profile stars have refused to entertain the idea of visiting the head of state. “We don’t want to go to the White House, so I figure that’s why the invitation hasn’t come,” Rapinoe said to the media as the team landed in the US after defeating the Netherlands in the final. “Maybe he sent it by mail and it’s just sort of, slow to get here.” However, Rapinoe offered a much more favorable response to a similar invitation from the Senate Minority Leader and

women’s team has generated more revenue than the men’s since they last won the World Cup in 2015. Moreover, they have been more successful on the pitch. The men’s team failed to qualify for Russia 2018 and has yet to win a World Cup, counting a third-place finish in Uruguay 1930 as its best result. Nevertheless, an avalanche of comments flowed in. Some trolls joked that if the women’s team were to get a pay bump, so too should the FC Dallas
under-15’s boy’s team, who beat the national women’s team 5-2 in 2017. Others pointed out that until the women’s tournament closes the $5.9 billion revenue gap with the men’s competition, wages and prize money will remain lower. “People were able to get tickets to the @USWNT for $15 to the semifinals,” one wrote. “$15 will get you a beer for a men’s game.”

‘Toy Story 4’--A Treat For The Kid In All Of Us On Nov. 22, 1995 “Toy Story,” the first computergenerated animated film ever made, debuted on the silver screen. Over the years “Toy Story” features have earned nine Oscar nominations and in 2011 the third “Toy Story” won the Oscar for animation. Besides winning Oscar gold, the “Toy Story” franchise has also won the hearts of moviegoers--young and old and in between. “Toy Story 4” is no exception. The old gang is still on hand in “Toy Story 4” along with new toys that include Giggle McDimples (Aki Maki) who is Bo Peep’s new BFF, two plush toys named Ducky and Bunny (Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) plus the motor-cycle riding daredevil Duke Caboom (voiced by Keanu Reeves). Screenwriters Stephany Folsom and Andrew Stanton have also added a goofy looking new toy made from a spork named Forkie. The story begins nine years earlier as Andy’s sister is about to give away Bo Peep (Annie Potts) and her sheep. It’s a sad farewell for Woody who likes Bo Peep more than he realizes. Then the narrative switches to the present. Little Bonnie (Madeleine McGraw) now has all of Andy’s toys. They were given to her just before he left for college in “Toy Story 3.” Woody (Tom Hanks) is still one of her toys, but she doesn’t play with him
often anymore. However, he still worries about her, so when she leaves for her first day of kindergarten, he hides in her school bag to be sure she’s OK. After a little boy throws her art supplies in the wastebasket, Woody stealthily puts them back on her desk. Using a plastic spork, Bonnie makes a toy that she names Forky. However Forky thinks he’s trash and keeps tossing himself into a wastebasket. When Bonnie and her parents go on a road trip, Forky jumps out of the car followed by Woody who finally convinces him he is not junk-he’s a toy. On their way back to the car, Woody sees Bo Peep’s lampstand in an antique store window, so he and Forky go Inside to look for her. Bo Peep isn’t there, but a doll named Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) and four creepy ventriloquist dummies are. Eventually Woody and Bo find each other. She has become a worldly toy living on her own, but it’s clear that they both still have feelings for each other. Will they get together this time? At this point, Woody’s close pal Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) steps in and gives him some very good advice. “Toy Story 4” has a running time of 1 hour 40 minutes and is rated G.

Trump’s July 4 Extravaganza Siphons Money from National Parks
By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – The first ever “Salute to America,” being staged by President Donald Trump in Washington this Fourth of July will divert $2.5 million from national parks that already have a $12 billion maintenance backlog. Earlier this year, national parks lost $6 million in fee revenues due to the government shutdown. Theresa Pierno, president and CEO of the National Parks Conservation Association, maintains diverting funds from parks for the event is a breach of trust with the public. “Here again, we’re diverting fees, and this time for something that just seems so outrageous and in no way aligns with what’s in the best interest of protecting our national parks,” she states. In Minnesota alone, national parks need $17 million in infrastructure upgrades. www.desertstarweekly.com
The Washington event will include a display of military hardware, including tanks and flyovers by fighter jets, as well as an address by the president and an expanded fireworks show. Trump earlier floated a military parade on the Fourth of July or Veterans Day, inspired by parades on Bastille Day in France, but plans were scrapped when Washington, D.C. officials said it would cost upwards of $90 million. The Trump administration has declined to say how much the extravaganza will cost taxpayers, but Pierno argues the national parks should not be a source of funds. “They think $2.5 million isn’t a lot, but when you add that to the $6 million that was already lost in fee revenue when the federal government shut down in December, this continues to compound the problem,” she stresses. Pierno says more than
400 park sites have crumbling roads, eroding trails, unsafe campgrounds, and visitor centers that need repairs. “The reality is, when you pay your fees and you go into the national parks, I
think everybody expects that they’re going to be used as they’re supposed to be used,” Pierno states. National parks are a huge source of income for states. For example,

By Desert Star Staff Serena Williams’ quest for an eighth Grand Slam win at the All England Club remains intact as the American tennis star dominated Barbora Strycova to breeze in the Wimbledon final, where she will take on Romanian star Simona Halep. Williams met little resistance against the unseeded Czech on Centre Court, breezing past Strycova in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) under the afternoon sun in London to put her on the verge of what would be a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam victory. Last year’s losing finalist needed just 59 minutes to bypass Strycova, using her incredibly dominant serve to deny her opponent a foundation from which to mount a challenge of her own. It was a far cry from the stuttering performance Williams showed in her three-set quarterfinal against compatriot Alison Riske on Tuesday, who was able to drag Serena into the type of

dogfight Strycova - Johanna Konta’s conqueror in the quarters - was unable to muster. The 19 aces Williams managed against Riske were absent today, with just four serves winging past Strycova in the match, but Williams’ secondary game was fine-tuned to the point where she won 89% of her service points. After the first set blowout, Strycova briefly showed renewed vigor in the second as she attempted to gain parity, at least, from the vast array of shots coming her way. In the end, her resistance lasted for around four games before having the wind taken from her sails after Williams capitalized on a botched chip shot. From that point, the match appeared little more than a formality, but one suspects that Halep’s relentless pace will provide more of a challenge to the American as she attempts to carve out her own piece of history on Saturday.
