Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Air Museum held a D-Day program on June 6th, which is the 75th anniversary of the Allied Landing at Normandy, which we now refer to a D-Day. This was one of the most massive amphibious
military assaults in history. On June 6th, 1944, over 160,000 servicemen, 5,000 Allied Ships and 13,000 planes all came together to fight Nazi German forces. This day was the one day that started the end of the war and the liberation of Europe.
The movie, The Longest Day, was shown on TV on D-Day that showed the courage and bravery of our fighting forces in the hope for freedom and the end of the war. The Auditorium in the Air Museum was filled with people who wanted to hear
By Desert Star Staff LAS VEGAS– June 8, international superstar Celine Dion concluded her second groundbreaking residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Since Celine’s first residency debuted in 2003, more than 4.5 million fans attended 1,141 performances at the award-winning venue explicitly built for Dion, and every show of Ms. Dion’s final run this spring was soldout. The final crowd was treated to special moments throughout the show including a performance of Celine’s new song ‘Flying on My Own’ from her upcoming album,
Courage, due for release in November of this year. Touching moments included a photo collage backdrop set to ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ featuring images from Celine’s Colosseum shows from the very beginning, and photos of Rene Angelil, her late husband and former manager, and their three boys, who also joined Celine and her longtime orchestra and band on stage during the emotional final curtain call. “I’m both proud and humbled by what we’ve accomplished at The Colosseum since we began 16 years ago when René and
I first shared this dream,” said Celine. “This entire experience has been a huge part of my show business career… one that I will cherish forever. I have so many people to thank, but the most important ‘thank you’ goes to my fans, who gave us the opportunity to do what we love.” In March 2003, Celine Dion forever changed the landscape of Las Vegas entertainment with the premiere of her first residency A New Day… which played 717 shows from March 25, 2003, through December 15, 2007. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Unified School District, PSUSD, held a private screening of the muchanticipated movie, Rocketman, a biopic of the life of musical icon Elton John. Many guests arrived for a cocktail hour before the screening in large sequined glasses, colorful shoes, and jackets to honor their favorite idol, Elton John. Each person got a raffle ticket, free popcorn and a drink with their admission ticket. There was also a silent auction on the upper-level balcony of the Mary Pickford Theatre where the movie was shown. This was also a significant fundraiser for PSUSD Foundation for their many programs and scholarships. The event announced the Foundation’s Keisha D musical scholarship program which will be a permanently endowed fund to provide college scholarships to PSUSD high school seniors who want to pursue a career in music and the theatre. The Western Wind Foundation is matching all donations up to $25,000 for the fund. The Academy of Performing arts, AMP, brought several students who performed for the audience. Keisha D arrived wearing a huge headdress made of yellow and orange feathers. She spoke to the children performers and posed for photos. Keisha D makes her home in the Coachella Valley and performs regularly locally. Ellen Goodman from PSUSD spoke before the screening to alert guests about the programs PSUSD provides to local youth. Many local school kids can’t afford college, and they are so talented and miss out on their chosen careers in entertainment. Scholarships are their only way to their dreams, and that’s where PSUSD Foundation comes in to help. 25 Valley schools are represented at AMP. Young Adults are Wise to begin Financial Planning Early
By Janice Gough As advisors, we should help younger clients bridge that gap between what their life is today and what it may be like later. With young clients, the problem is that that they may not have yet accumulated enough assets in which they feel like a financial advisor is necessary, and their investments may not meet the minimum investment required by an advisor. When one begins to understand the importance of saving for a rainy day, it is a starting point and an important time in which they

need to invest themselves in learning. Most have never been trained to save or feel the need to, as most have comfortable live lives with all their needs filled by their parents. I applaud all parents today who make their children get jobs so that they can begin to pay their own way. More may be learned from working your way thru college, than the studies themselves. There are specific attributes that one gains in a struggle. They are appreciation, the pride of accomplishment, co-coordinating efforts with others, goal setting, time management, respectability, overcoming failures, and the ability to set goals. These traits will provide more security for a young person than having a ton of money to spend and a cushy life. It does not matter the amount that one can save out of every paycheck, it is far more critical to establish a habit of saving. Savings should be placed on autopilot because as soon as that hard cold cash reaches one’s hands, there are thousands of things on their wish list, and the idea that they spend the most time doing, the internet, will provide a gazillion more ways to consume efficiently. When our rainy day arrives, we all experience the rewards of saving and planning financially. When a younger person begins to make money, this is the most crucial time to become educated on
how remote the possibility may be. Over the age of 18, parents no longer have automatic rights to access medical records or to make legal or financial decisions on their children’s behalf. As financial educators, we help young adults envision how life will look 40 years from now, and visually place themselves in that picture. Most younger adults have experienced family medical situations and deaths. They have experienced the problems of what the caretakers and descendants have had to face when there has been a lack of planning and preparedness. Getting them to think about the importance of their own will is a starting point. Many youths believe that, if they’re young and do not have a lot of money, they don’t need
As a fiduciary of the association funds, the board must keep the members’ money secure and not subject to reduction. In the world of financial fiduciaries, if the fund shrinks, the fiduciary could be “surcharged,” meaning held personally liable for the reduction in the fund due to loss of funds. Loss of funds is not a risk with deposits in banking institutions insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), so long as no more than $250,000 is in any one institution. Many associations spread their reserve funds across multiple banks to keep their funds all insured within the limit. The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC, www.sipc. org) protects against a stock brokerage becoming insolvent or taking a client’s funds – but it expressly does not protect against declining investments. Associations are often tempted to place their reserve funds in stocks or stock funds, hoping for the possible increase in value. However, stocks are not guaranteed and can be quite volatile, and directors do not realize that if the stock market
drops, their liability rises. Stay safe- and in banks, Kelly

Investing, Growing, and Withdrawing Reserve Funds By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Kelly, I am a member of my HOA board. Our prior management company had done all of our investments (from our direction) for our reserve funds. FDIC insured CD’s were used as we understood that they were required by California law only to invest our funds in FDIC insured funds. We saw that the interest rate income from FDIC insured funds did not cover inflation increases and considered utilizing a financial firm to assist us to find some other opportunities that better protected our reserve assets using a combination of FDIC and SIPC insured securities. We have had some questioning from homeowners if it legal for us to utilize an SIPC insured fund (versus an FDIC fund). What type of investment opportunities are legal for HOA reserve funds? Cannabis Options to Treat Opioid Addiction
By Desert Star Staff ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Opioid-use disorder tops the list of several new qualifying conditions for people in New Mexico who want to enroll in the state’s Medical Cannabis Program. David Morgan, public information officer with the Department of Health, said New Mexico has reduced its drug-overdose mortality rate from second-highest in the nation to 17th. He said the Health Department believes expanding the qualifying conditions for cannabis use could help continue the state’s downward trend. “We are hoping that being able to add opioid-use disorder as a qualifying condition to the medical cannabis program can help further mitigate drug-overdose deaths in
the state,” Morgan said. At least eight other states, including California, recognize opioid dependency as a qualifying condition that some choose to treat using medical marijuana. Other medical conditions that now qualify in New Mexico are Alzheimer’s disease, autism spectrum disorder, and three degenerative neurological disorders, including spinal muscular atrophy. Morgan said all the new qualifying conditions are based on recommendations from the state’s Medical Cannabis Advisory Board. “To better help some patients out there be able to get some relief from their conditions that they may not be able to get otherwise through conventional medical means,” he said.
About 73,000 New Mexicans have enrolled in the state’s medical marijuana program since it was introduced in 2007. (health.harvard.edu) In their most recent session, New Mexico legislators again considered a bill to legalize marijuana for
recreational use in the state, but it failed to gain enough support. Nonetheless, in April, Gov. Michelle Lujan
Grisham signed legislation to decrease penalties for marijuana possession from a criminal to a civil violation.
Conservationists Oppose Moving BLM HQ to Western State
Cedar Mesa in Southern Utah is part of thousands of square miles of public lands in the Western United States. Federal officials are considering moving the BLM’s headquarters from Washington, D.C. to a western state to better manage public lands. (HannahCowan/BLM) By Desert Star Staff SALT LAKE CITY — Federal officials say they plan to reveal later this year whether they will relocate the Bureau of Land Management headquarters to a Western state. The stated goal is to
better manage federally owned public lands, which are mostly in the West. But conservation have questioned the Trump administration’s motives. States such as Utah, Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico and Colorado have been
most prominently mentioned for the relocation. Ashley Soltysiak with the Sierra Club of Utah said they see no real reason for the move. “I think that the current system is working - sort of that ‘if it’s not broke don’t fix
By Desert Star Staff CARSON CITY, Nev. — Gov. Steve Sisolak recently signed a trio of bills that make life easier on marijuana users now that the drug is legal for adults to possess. Assembly Bill 132 forbids employers from discriminating against job applicants if cannabis shows up on a preemployment drug test. THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, can be detected for weeks after someone uses it, so it is not a good indicator of whether someone will be under the influence on the job.
Chris Lindsey, senior legislative counsel with the Marijuana Policy Project, said it’s unfair to punish someone for using a legal substance. “It’s great news for Nevadans who aren’t going to be excluded from the workplace because they are consumers on their own time,” Lindsey said. A second new law, Senate Bill 430, adds forms of autism, anxiety and chronic pain to the list of conditions that qualify someone for a medical marijuana card. Previously, for example, only severe pain qualified, but not
persistent, chronic pain. Opponents of the bills argue that they encourage drug use. A third bill, AB 192, allows those with certain prior marijuana convictions to have their records sealed, so they won’t show up if a prospective landlord, employer or school searches a person’s record. Lindsey said no one should be denied housing, a job or an education for doing something that now would be considered legal. “And so it’s important, as we move away the days of prohibition and into one where
it’ mentality,” Soltysiak said. “But there are field offices throughout the West, and they communicate regularly with headquarters. And so, I don’t see a huge benefit to moving the headquarters west.” Soltysiak said the states being considered have large contingents of legislators and other interests who want the states to control federal lands. Conservation groups such as the Sierra Club and others have fought for years to keep public lands under federal control. They are concerned that those lands could be opened up for mineral leases or other development or might be sold outright to private interests. Currently, the federal government owns more than one-third of all the land in the five states, and controls more than 60% of both Idaho and Utah. Shifting control of public lands to sates has long been a goal of many westernstate conservatives, who
say the federal government controls too much of their land. Soltysiak said moving a large agency such as the BLM out of Washington could be an enormous and unnecessary expense. “There’s been no dollar sign that’s been placed on this reorganization,” she said. “And these types of changes don’t come without a pretty major cost, which could be massive for an agency that has already been underfunded and has limited resources.” Over the last two years, the Trump administration has acted aggressively to remove parts of national monuments and limit future designations. In Utah, a presidential order removed millions of acres of land from both the Bears Ears and Grand StaircaseEscalante monuments. Department of the Interior officials say September is their deadline to announce details of any decision to relocate the BLM.
we have a regulatory system, that we help these people get rid of the burden that can hold them back,” he said. The law would not
expunge convictions, meaning they would still be on a person’s record and could be viewed by a judge or law enforcement.

By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Nashville mother of two young girls is weighing in on an Environmental Protection Agency proposal to weaken rules that regulate mercury and other toxic air emissions from coal-fired power plants. The Mercury and Air Toxics Standards were put into place in 2012, but the EPA now says it’s too expensive for energy companies to comply with them. Zozan Noman traveled to Washington with a group of moms from across the country to testify at the agency’s only public hearing on reversing the rules. She’s concerned about the health effects of mercury pollution on women who are pregnant or are trying to conceive. “Within the last 10 months, I have had two miscarriages and cannot figure out why,”
Noman states. “As a mother and a wife who would love to conceive again, I would have to say that the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards are extremely important to me, as well as life-saving for adults.” Mercury from power plants pollutes the air and seeps into rivers and streams, where it ends up in marine life. Pregnant women in particular face serious risks consuming fish, as studies have shown exposure to mercury in the womb can harm a developing brain and nervous system. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation recently warned of elevated mercury levels in fish in East Fork Stones River in Rutherford County. Until the MATS rule, there was no unified set of federal laws designed to cap emissions from power plants. The EPA itself previously

Temperatures to Spike in Coachella Valley this Week NBC PS News Staff The hottest weather so far this year is predicted to take hold in the Coachella Valley this week, according to the National Weather Service. A high pressure system will bring triple digit temperatures to the Coachella Valley and the San Diego County deserts between Monday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The area is likely to see the highest temperatures on Tuesday. Palm Springs is expected to reach 108 degrees that day, and Thermal is
expected to see 107 degrees. Borrego Springs in San Diego County is predicted to reach 110 degrees on Tuesday. An excessive heat warning is set to go into effect Tuesday morning, which warns of temperatures as high as 114 degrees in the Coachella Valley. Temperatures in the 100s are typical for the desert region in June, but recent cooler-thannormal weather means people may not be accustomed to the heat, forecasters said. Residents are cautioned to stay hydrated, stay indoors if possible and check on
relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, according to the NWS. The heat warning is slated to expire Wednesday night. This week’s heat wave arrives in the wake of recordbreaking Sunday temperatures in the region. Riverside beat a 25-year record for June 9 with 104 degrees, while Ramona set a June 9 record of 102 degrees, and El Cajon reached 94 degrees, the NWS reported. Source: NBC Palm Springs

By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has announced signing an “important” part of an agreement on immigration with Mexico. The news comes a week into the neighbors’ row over tariffs and border security. Washington has “fully signed and documented another very important part” of the immigration deal with Mexico, Trump tweeted on Monday. He added that the details of the agreement will be revealed sometime soon, and it will have to be approved by Mexican lawmakers. The president said that he doesn’t expect the latter to be “a problem” but would reinstate tariffs if necessary. Last week, the nations signed a last-minute deal to avert the implementation of the tariffs Trump slapped on all Mexican goods. The president earlier argued that
the tariffs were to remain in place until the nation’s southern neighbor curbs the flow of migrants, mainly coming from Central America through Mexican territory. According to the deal, Mexico agreed to deploy 6,000 National Guard troops along its border with Guatemala. President Trump also claimed that Mexico will “immediately” start buying more US-made farm products. Commenting on his remarks, the Mexican envoy to the US, Martha Barcena Coqui, explained that the trade between the states would have increased even without the threat of tariffs. More than 132,000 migrants were apprehended at the US-Mexico border in May, which is roughly a 33 percent increase since April and the highest monthly total in 13 years.
Overall, nearly 396,600 people were apprehended in the US after illegally crossing the border during the fiscal year of 2018, the nation’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said. Tens of thousands of
people remain near the ports of entry. Many have arrived from the Central American nations of El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras, seeking asylum from criminal gangs, police brutality, and
domestic abuse at home. President Trump has long been accusing Mexico of “sending” illegal migrants across the border and vowed to build a border wall that Mexico “will pay for.”

He was sent to England and disembarked from the Dover area with the U.S.Army in ships crossing the English Channel. He
By Desert Star Staff CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Environmental groups in North Carolina have negotiated a settlement with Enviva, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood pellet fuel for power plants. The company has agreed to install pollutionreducing equipment at a plant under construction in the town of Hamlet, east of Charlotte. According to Daniel Parkhurst, policy manager with the group Clean Air Carolina, the controls will reduce harmful emissions by 95% during the dirtiest phase of production. He said Hamlet residents are already exposed to high levels of air pollution. “All four Enviva facilities in North Carolina are in the bottom 25 counties for health outcomes,” Parkhurst said. “So, you already have communities in the area who are particularly vulnerable to emissions and to pollution, and this just adds on to the things that they breathe, day in and day out.” In a separate settlement with the state Department of Environmental Quality, Enviva agreed to install similar airpollution control technology at a facility in Sampson County. Wood pellets are produced mostly in the southeastern U.S. where trees are harvested and turned into pellets that are sold and shipped to European Union
countries to fuel power plants. A few years ago, Enviva sought to modify its airpollution permit for the Hamlet plant, which is slated to open later this year. Attorney Heather Hillaker with the Southern Environmental Law Center said the proposed permit modifications would have circumvented federal and state regulations under the Clean Air Act. “When we saw that those modifications were going to result in exceedances of the emissions limits required under the Clean Air Act, we spoke with people in the community that were concerned about the impact of pollution from this facility on their health and their well-being,” Hillaker said. Wood-pellet production pollutes the air by creating volatile organic compounds - or VOCs - which have been linked to asthma, cardiovascular disease, lung disease and depression. Hillaker said the settlement, which will ensure most of the VOCs produced by the Enviva Hamlet facility don’t end up in the air, is a win for the health of Richmond County residents. The blunt trauma to the Helmet made him lose consciousness and was sent to a hospital in England, where he received the Purple Heart. The audience asked many questions about the Helmet and D-Day. A Direct quote from Allen Lechtman MD, the son of Hy Lechtman and the keeper of the Helmet, was given to Pam Price-Lechtman and went like
this. “I think it is much easier to understand the history and hopefully not forget it when you have something specific in your hand to illustrate it, that you can talk about as is my father’s Helmet that illustrates that point. Not only that, when you have someone’s life to discuss, who was intimately involved in the making of that history, it becomes a most memorable focal point for that discussion”.

‘Stan & Ollie’ --A Tribute to Laurel & Hardy Before comedy duos like Hope and Crosby or Martin and Lewis, there was Laurel and Hardy--Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Stan Laurel was born in Lancashire, England in 1890 and Oliver Hardy made his earthly debut in Georgia in 1892. Hardy had a variety of jobs in his youth before he headed to Hollywood with dreams of becoming an actor. In the 1920s their lives were creatively connected by studio head Hal Roach (Danny Huston) who teams them up. The result is comedy history. The film, written by Jeff Pope and directed by Jon S. Baird, begins in 1937 as the two men are cavorting on set. First, we see Hardy (John C. Reiley) munching on goodies provided by the studio before he joins Laurel (Steve Coogan) in a charming soft shoe dance. The film then cuts to 1953. Sixteen years earlier they had been the rage, starring in comedy classics like “Babes In Toyland” and “Sons of the Desert.” Now their once lauded film career is on the wane due to the
passage of time and the advent of television. To regain their popularity once again they have signed up with producer Bernard Delfont (Rufus Jones) for a series of stage shows throughout Britain and Ireland. The tour is intended to show the public that they are alive and well and still as funny as ever. In the beginning, they don’t draw massive crowds, but as their tour progresses, their audiences grow. We, like the onscreen theater patrons, are charmed by their comedy routines as they recreate famous bits from their films. One is the double door sketch where they keep missing each other as Laurel goes in one door and Hardy heads in the opposite direction through a different door. Then there’s a hospital skit. Hardy is in bed with a bandage over his head and his leg in an overhead sling. When Laurel comes for a visit, the results are hilarious for the audience but a disaster for the patient. Throughout their relationship, Laurel is the
one who writes the comedy material and lines up deals, while Hardy is more carefree. He likes to bet at the track and leave the business details to his partner. There are some scraps and misunderstandings throughout the tour, but it is evident that the two share a loving bond for one another. Their wives accompany them on their tour. Ida is Laurel’s fourth wife (Nina Arianda), and Lucille (Shirley
Henderson) is Hardy’s very protective third mate. She worries about his health, which by now is on the decline. The two gals don’t hit it off, but they seem to care about husbands and their welfare. Coogan and Riley are perfect as the delightful comedy team. Thanks to marvelous makeup and their personal acting skills, Laurel and Hardy come to life and make us laugh.
“Stan & Ollie” is rated PG for some language and for smoking. Running Time: 1 hour, 37 minutes. The movie is now available on DVD with featurettes that show you how Jeremy Woodhead’s hair and makeup and Mark Coulier’s prosthetic makeup effects transform actors Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly into Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The results are amazing.

By mixing and matching traditional grilled classics with options that have a variety of textures and flavors, you can shake up your at-home menu and add new favorites to your routine this grilling season. One ingredient to consider adding to your repertoire is Mrs. T’s Pierogies, which are available in 14 flavors. They’re stuffed with creamy
mashed potatoes, cheesy goodness and other big, bold flavors, and you can grill them right alongside your favorite barbecue fare. Consider these tips from grilling expert Susie Bulloch of “Hey Grill Hey” to add some new sizzle to your grill this summer by using pierogies. • Use good cooking oil to create a crispy exterior. Olive, avocado or canola oil can handle the heat of the grill. • Try two-zone cooking. Start by cooking on the lowtemperature side of the grill (known as indirect cooking) to slowly heat from frozen. Then move to the hot side of the grill (direct) to add a crisp texture and achieve a golden brown exterior. • Add layers of texture. With a soft interior and crispy exterior, pierogies pair well with juicy, chewy protein and a flavorful sauce, enhancing their texture and flavors. You can create these layers with a recipe like Grilled Pierogies with Steak and Chimichurri. • Don’t be afraid of color. Grilled to golden brown with aesthetic grill marks, you can add an extra crunch and boost of flavor. Find more grilling recipes and ideas at mrstspierogies. com. Family Features June 12, 2019

Celine Dion Concludes her Groundbreaking Las Vegas Residency at Caesars Palace
Continued from Page 1 March 15, 2011, she made a triumphant return to Caesars Palace with her second residency, Celine, which played 424 shows. Across the 16 years, Celine performed 1,141 shows to more than 4.5 million fans at The Colosseum. The residency was presented by Concerts West/AEG Presents and Caesars Entertainment and directed by legendary Grammy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich. “The incredible vision that Celine and Rene had almost two decades ago has completely re-written the history and future of entertainment in Las Vegas,“ said John Meglen, President & Co-CEO of Concerts West, a division of AEG Presents. “For this vision to materialize into a world-renowned success is remarkable, and we congratulate Celine and her entire team, cast, and crew. Caesars Palace has been an amazing home for Celine and her shows for all these years. We are honored to have been part of this extraordinary journey and excited for our future together.” “For an improbable 16 years, Celine Dion has reigned as the Queen of Las Vegas entertainment from The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, the home we built for her pioneering residency. On behalf of all of my colleagues at Caesars Entertainment, and of course the employees of Caesars Palace, we want to thank her and her late-husband René Angélil, and our partners at AEG/Concerts West, for their faith that Caesars Palace was the right place for Celine Dion to draw her millions of fans from around the world to see her perform,” said Gary Selesner, president of Caesars Palace. “We also want to thank the musicians, singers, dancers, technicians, ushers and security officers for their selfless contributions to what will surely go down in history as one of the longest-running and most successful shows ever. While it’s sad to see it end, it’s also a moment of triumph for everyone involved, and clearly, our hearts will go on, filled with memories of Celine’s stirring performances night after night after night at The

MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
New Music Essentials: Santana, Johnny Shines, and Buck Owens
Trailblazing guitarist/ bandleader Carlos Santana is back with one of the most exciting albums of his long career while a previouslyunheard live recording featuring bluesman Johnny Shines and a vital collection highlighting Buck Owens & the Buckaroos are also worth discovering. Artist: Santana Title: Africa Speaks (Concord Records) You might like if you enjoy: Santana, Gary Clark Jr., Buika Tell me more: “Africa Speaks” marks yet another incredible artistic step forward for legendary guitarist Carlos Santana. Long recognized and celebrated for his groundbreaking blend of rock, Latin, blues and jazz fusion, the 71-years-young Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has now added the signature sounds of Africa to his band Santana’s approach for a joyful and
spirited sonic adventure. The powerful production of Rick Rubin is notable here; just listen to Santana’s fiery and bristling fretwork on “Batonga,” “Yo Me Lo Merezco” and the affecting “Breaking Down the Door.” Equally important is the role of Spanish singer Buika, whose dynamic vocals are a match for Santana’s amped-up guitar play. The ambitious “Oye Este Mi Canto” begins gracefully and builds to an explosive peak before descending into tranquil bliss. “Blue Skies” blends jazz with African rhythms with bona fide style; the track finds Laura Mvula adding backing vocals to the ambitious track. “Paraisos Quemados is bolstered by Benny Rietveld’s funky baseline. “Africa Speaks” finds lyrics for some songs being sung in English and others in Spanish but to be sure the power and spirit of this album quickly casts its spell and doesn’t let go. Santana will headline at the FivePoint Amphitheatre in
Irvine on Thursday, June 20, and at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday, June 24. Information: concordrecords.com. Artist: Johnny Shines Title: The Blues Came Falling Down – Live 1973 (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Robert Johnson, Keb’ Mo.’ Tell me more: Countless memorable performances have been lost over time but thanks to Omnivore Recordings a previously-unheard 1973 concert recording featuring Memphis-born bluesman Johnny Shines is available for all to hear today. Born in 1915, singer-guitarist-songwriter Shines toured with Robert Johnson in the 1930s and played blues with the legendary likes of Robert Lockwood Jr., Little Walter, Willie Dixon, and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Recorded live at Washington University in St. Louis, “The Blues Came Falling Down –
Live 1973” is a 20-track set that fully captures the spirit and freewheeling Southern acoustic blues that Shines had mastered decades before. Listening to Shines’ version of Robert Johnson’s “Kind Hearted Woman Blues,” “I’m A Steady Rollin’ Man” and “Sweet Home Chicago” – the latter enhanced by Leroy Jodie Pierson’s acoustic guitar work – is to hear the magic of those blues classics come fully to life. Shines’ own material is just as formidable, as evidenced by the vocals-anchored “Have You Ever Loved A Woman,” and nuanced “The Blues Came Falling Down” and “Big Star Falling.” The aforementioned Pierson’s insightful liner notes provide a revealing look at the life and career of Shines (who passed away in 1992). Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com. Artist: Buck Owens & the Buckaroos
Title: The Complete Capitol Singles, 1971-1975 (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Buck Owens, Dwight Yoakam, Susan Raye Tell me more: Buck Owens & the Buckaroos’ newlyreleased “The Complete Capitol Singles, 1971-1975” is actually the third and final in a series of wonderful titles featuring the legendary country artist’s Capitol singles from the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. Taken from the original stereo masters, the 42song collection also includes the B-side to all 21 singles from that span. The breadth of material on the new set extends from a heartfelt reworking of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and the Owens-penned bluegrass gem “Ruby (Are You Mad)” to the winning country waltz “Great Expectations” and a number of fun musical curios (including “Too Old to Cut the Mustard,” “Full Time Daddy,” “On the Cover Of The Music City News” and “Big Game Hunter”). There are a score of terrific duets with Susan Raye (including the novelty cut “Santa’s Gonna Come in a Stagecoach,” joyful “One of Everything You Got” and tender “Cryin’ Time”) that showcase the pair’s toptier vocals. The detailed liner notes penned by author/ country music historian Scott B. Bomar provide welcome insight to this outstanding two-disc set. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Tips for adding personality to your leased living space
E
FAMILY FEATURES
ven if you don’t own the house you lease, there’s no reason you can’t make it feel like home by taking a creative approach to designing and decorating your space. More U.S. households are renting now than at any point in the last 50 years. That’s why Invitation Homes, the premier home leasing company in the United States, put together a team of design experts to create the “Make It Home design forecast with lease-friendly, affordable design and decor ideas created with renters in mind. Before starting any design, you need a plan. Here are a few tips to reimagine your rental home:
Embrace Color and Pattern
Emily Henderson, author of “Styled, a “New York Times bestseller, believes color gives a room life, but it doesn’t have to be on the walls. With rugs, textiles and furniture, you can have a lively, fun, lease-friendly room by choosing colors that are on the opposite sides of the color wheel to ensure balance.
Personalize Gallery Walls
Live Outdoors
Maximize your living space by creating usable outdoor settings. With the right combination of outdoor seating, pillows, shade and colorful planters, you can turn any patio into an outdoor oasis, said Rhoda Vickers, author of the “Southern Hospitality blog. Whether you treat the space as a garden retreat or an extension of your entertaining area where guests can spill out during a party, the right decorative elements can allow you to add livable square footage without any construction.
Reimagine Lighting
Set the tone of each room by incorporating LED bulbs to brighten up the space or smart home bulbs that allow you to change the ambience as you wish. Kevin O’Gara, the “Thou Swellâ€? blog writer, approaches design with the idea that every room should have a mix of lighting, including overhead, accent and task lights, so it’s the perfect opportunity to get creative with setting the mood. Take your design beyond basic by installing your RZQ Âż[WXUHV WKDW HQKDQFH WKH URRPÂśV OLJKWLQJ DQG add a decorative element that complements the overall aesthetic.
The gallery wall is still having a moment, and this decorative element is all about customization. All you need is a little wall space and some creativity to infuse your space with a heavy dose of you. Henderson suggests displaying your favorite photos, prints and unique items like personal mementos to give them the eye-catching showcase they deserve.
Give Space a Dual Purpose
Temporary Wall Coverings
Make it a Smart Home
A permanent wall texture or design may be a no-no in a rental, but removable wallpaper is a yes-yes and an instant way to add personality to your space. Brittany Hayes, author of the “Addison’s Wonderland blog, believes that bold and daring geometric patterns are perfect for creating an accent wall. Or simply incorporate your favorite colors to embrace a custom feel while you lease.
Unconventional Storage
Staying organized is key when living a leasing lifestyle. “Live Pretty on a Pennyâ€? blog writer Erin Marshall recommends using space-saving and unconventional items that are beautiful and functional to effectively store and organize items. Look for furnishings that are both attractive and practical so you can achieve the ORRN \RX ZDQW ZLWK WKH EHQHÂżW RI DGGHG VWRUDJH Options like nesting chairs or storage boxes that double as benches can add seating options with a modest footprint.

It’s all about maximizing your space when leasing, according to Brittni Mehlhoff, author of the “Paper and Stitchâ€? blog. Make the most of a space that can pull double-duty. For example, in a space such as your guest room, create a bookshelf that doubles as D GHVN DQG VHUYHV DV \RXU KRPH RIÂżFH DV ZHOO
Smart homes aren’t just for homeowners. Options like thermostats, doorbell cameras, smart locks, light bulbs and smart plugs all can be easily integrated into a rented property, said Meghan Giddens, design expert at Invitation Homes. In fact, nearly everything in your home can be connected to the internet and controlled by your smart device. Just keep any originals stored safely, and when it comes time to move out, swap out your devices.
Light and Bright Paint
Cooler paint tones and white trim can brighten a room and offer a timeless color scheme. Plus, they welcome of-the-moment decor. If your lease allows it, Giddens recommends creating a light and airy ambiance with paint to bring a rental space to life. If you’re unsure about your lease guidelines, talk to your property manager before painting. Visit InvitationHomes.com for more tips on how to make a rented house a home.

6 Ways to Help Your Dog Maintain Calm Behavior By Desert Star Staff Summer can be a stressful time of year for dogs who experience anxious behaviors, with triggers like fireworks, thunderstorms, summer travel and more taking a toll on pets. While you may not be able to prevent your pet’s anxious behaviors entirely, there are ways you can ease your dog’s apprehension and manage the behavior it can potentially cause. In a survey* by Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements, 62% of dog owners reported seeing regular anxious behaviors in their dogs, such as excessive barking, compulsive jumping and shaking or trembling. Yet 35% of owners surveyed believe their dogs’ personalities are among the primary causes of concerning behaviors. “It’s important to talk to your veterinarian if your dog is displaying undesirable behaviors,” said Jason Gagne, DVM, DACVN and director of veterinary technical communication for Pro Plan Veterinary Diets. “What might be perceived as a characteristic of a particular breed or part of a dog’s personality could really be an anxious behavior that needs attention.” Gagne suggests pet owners take these steps to help keep pets comfortable and calm.
Start preparing early: For stressful situations near your home, such as fireworks, help prepare your dog by exposing him or her to recorded firework or thunder sounds. Begin training several months in advance and gradually increase the volume while rewarding your dog for maintaining calm behavior. Create a safe space: Prepare a special area in your home where your dog can feel safe and secure during noisy instances. If crate trained, your dog may feel most secure there with a favorite toy to stay occupied. If not crate trained, put the bed in a quiet place during fireworks or thunderstorms, close the windows and play some music to help muffle sounds. Consider a probiotic: Pay your vet a visit to discuss your dog’s behavior and see if he or she could benefit from a probiotic that’s been shown to help dogs maintain calm behavior, like Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements Calming Care. This probiotic supplement, available through veterinarians, also helps dogs maintain positive cardiac activity during stressful events, promoting a positive emotional state. It may take up to six weeks to see results, so give
Photo courtesy of Getty Images yourself plenty of lead time. Make your dog comfortable: Giving your dog a special treat or favorite toy during a potentially upsetting event might help establish a positive association with these loud noises. Calming wraps may help for some dogs, too. Like swaddling for infants, these may help your dog feel secure during stressful situations. Make car travel a positive experience: If car rides bring out your dog’s anxious behaviors, get him
or her used to the idea of car travel before summer road trips. Use a crate or dog carrier that’s large enough for your dog to lay down comfortably. Use a reward such as a favorite treat or interactive toy to get him or her excited to get in the car and crate before taking a trip. Stay calm: Pets look to their owners for reassurance, so showing them a calm, relaxed demeanor helps them understand there is no real danger. For more information, visit Purina.com or speak
Bill to Decriminalize Sex Work Introduced By Desert Star Staff ALBANY, N.Y. — Some Albany legislators say criminalizing sex work between consenting adults only empowers sex traffickers and it’s time for a change. A package of bills called the Stop Violence in the Sex Trades Act has been introduced in both the Assembly and Senate. The first statewide bill of its kind in the country, it would decriminalize trade in sex between consenting adults. Nina Luo is a member of Decrim New York, a coalition
of more that 30 organizations spanning the LGBTQ, racial justice, harm-reduction and immigrants’ rights communities. She pointed out that many marginalized people are shut out of the formal economy by discrimination and turn to the sex trade to survive. “Whether it’s to pay bills or to feed their families or to pay for gender-affirming health care,” Luo said. “So, we don’t want to criminalize their form of survival, and that’s why we’re decriminalizing both the sale and purchase of sex.”
By Desert Star Staff ShortFest (Palm Springs International Short Film Festival & Film Market), one of the largest and most acclaimed short film showcases in the world, will take place in Palm Springs on June 18-24, 2019. ShortFest is the destination for international filmmakers to celebrate the art of cinema and network with filmmakers and industry experts from all over the world. Now in its 25th year, the seven-day competitive festival screens approximately 325 films from over 100 countries.
ShortFest is an Oscar® and BAFTA® and Los Premios Goya-qualifying festival and has presented more than 100 shorts that have gone on to receive Oscar® nominations. The concurrent ShortFest Film Market, the largest short film markets in the world, will feature a library of more than 5,300 film submissions available to industry guests, and the ShortFest Forum will feature three days of panels covering a wide range of emerging trends and new practices in the global film community.
Opponents of decriminalization say it would promote sex trafficking, pimping and organized crime. But supporters emphasize that the bill, if passed, would leave laws against human trafficking, rape, assault, sexual exploitation of minors and sexual harassment in place. Luo added criminalizing sex trade has forced those who engage in sex work into an underground, illegal environment that puts them at extreme risk. “People who do harm to
people who trade sex know that if sex workers try to report crimes, police are going to lock them up,” she said. “That’s what happens today.” Jessica Ramos, chair of the state Senate Labor Committee, said the legislation would help create safe workplaces by empowering sex workers to report violence. Decriminalization differs from legalizing and regulating sex work. Luo noted that Nevada has legalized sex work, as have Germany and the city of Amsterdam. But
to your veterinarian. *The survey data was collected by Relevation Research via an online survey from Aug. 15-19, 2018. Eighthundred-twenty-six nationally representative dog owners qualified for and completed the survey. Qualified participants were men and women age 18 and older, owned one or more dogs (age 13 months or older), were household members most responsible for taking the dog(s) to a veterinarian and had taken the dog(s) to a veterinarian in the past 12 months. Family Features
the sex workers themselves receive few of the benefits. “The licenses to own brothels are so expensive that only brothel owners can afford them, and so that empowers people who manage and own brothels rather than sex workers working by themselves or with other sex workers,” she said. With the legislative session ending on June 19, there is little chance the bill will pass this year, but Luo said introducing it now will encourage public discussion and education for its reintroduction in the coming year.

18th Century Feminist Comedy “Ladies” On Stage at Boston Court
Boston Court Ladies. Photo: Jenny Graham. By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Sometime it’s difficult to assign a genre to a play. Is it a drama or is it a comedy or is it a little of both? Often it depends on the skill of the playwright and actors or the mood and sensibilities of the audience, as to whether everyone “gets it”. I can’t speak for everyone in the audience on opening night, but I’m viewing the production through the lens that I am watching a comedy, achingly spiced with elements of drama and truth that is creatively woven into the on-stage feminist situations and dialogue of playwright Kit Steinkellner’s daring and scandalous, forits-day-play, “Ladies”, now on stage at Boston Court Theatre in Pasadena. Despite the success of the #Me Too movement of the 21st century, it’s taken centuries just to get us to a point where “partnership” is beginning to take on real meaning. It behooves men to pay attention. The Divine Right of Kings, era is over. The story is based on The Blue Stocking Society of 1750 London. It was a society of creative, sophisticated, and educated women; women who came together to discuss literature, philosophy, and art in their London homes. They sought to bring the conversations and opinions of the day that were happening in the men’s private clubs and coffee houses into the parlor room where women could participate as well. Ms. Steinkellner’s play has just four female actors ‘standing in’ as surrogates for the 1750’s society of women. They also double as men when required. In addition to the action taking place in London, the ladies also break the fourth wall (normally a no-no) to give their characters’ various takes of how the 21st century society views the mores of the Victorian era and comparing them to today’s free spirited antics. The comments on both www.desertstarweekly.com
society segments are laced (no pun intended) with plenty of adult language; tons of F-bombs are hurled from the stage along with simulated graphic sexual activity on it. Sensuality, literally drips from every character encounter ranging from full frontal nudity to pedestrian gossip, so leave grandma and the kiddies at home. Boston Court Theatre’s mission statement of dedication to create and present works that are innovative, diverse, vital and adventurous in an intimate setting has certainly been realized in their last production, the potent and impressive “The Judas Kiss” by David Hare, directed by Michael Michetti, and now with the Steinkellner-Kubzansky collaboration on “LADIES”. Boldly and deftly directed by Boston Court’s co-artistic director Jessica Kubzansky, “Ladies” stars the sharp and smartly executed ensemble talents of: Meghan Andrews as Elizabeth Montagu and Carrie Kawa as Elizabeth Carter, the titular heads of the Society, along with Jully Lee as Fanny Burney, a published novelist, and Tracey A. Leigh as Angelica Kauffman, a portrait painter who find herself being sexually drawn toward Mrs. Burney. Their relationship is slow and tender to develop but eventually is consummated. Contrary to what men may think when it comes to romantic love gambits, women are wired like electric heating blankets; measured in their ardor. Men however, are like the electric light switch, ready when the light flips on. These observations and ponderings by and large are very entertaining on the bright side of “LADIES”. On the not so bright side is the communication component of this otherwise creative and inventive production. If these highly skilled actors are to be appreciated for their obvious talent then this audience of one needs to understand what they’re saying to one another in their scenes; especially in their monologues to the audience. Remember… iftheactors aretobeappreciatedfortheobv ioustalentthattheyposessweh
avetounderstandwhatthey’re sayingtooneanotherandtothe audiencen’est-cepas? Say, What??? ... Precisely!!! Funny observations, ruminations and/or drama, as well as comedy performances in the hands of stand-up comedians are orchestrated for maximum impact. So also should be all of the spoken art forms. Too many of today’s performers “gabble” their way through performance at warp speed without stopping to breathe. Too much watching of talking heads on TV talk shows? Perhaps. Language is the currency of the theatre. Love it. Honor It. It’s too important to ditz it or slough it off. But, I digress. In the technical department, an all-female creative crew of artists led by director Kubzansky includes: Scenic Designer Sara Ryung Clement
