ROCKETMAN by PSUD

Rancho Mirage Councilman, Les Young, Ellen Goodman, and Michael Amaro. Photo by Pat Krause Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Unified School District, PSUSD, held a private screening of the muchanticipated movie, Rocketman, a biopic of the life of musical icon Elton John. Many guests arrived for a cocktail hour before the screening in large sequined glasses, colorful shoes, and jackets to honor their favorite idol, Elton John. Each person got a raffle ticket, free popcorn and a drink with their admission ticket. There was also a silent

auction on the upper-level balcony of the Mary Pickford Theatre where the movie was shown. This was also a significant fundraiser for PSUSD Foundation for their many programs and scholarships. The event announced the Foundation’s Keisha D musical scholarship program which will be a permanently endowed fund to provide college scholarships to PSUSD high school seniors who want to pursue a career in music

By Desert Star Staff EASTERN COACHELLA VALLEY – A traffic signal to replace the four-way stop signs at Grapefruit Boulevard and Avenue 62 will be installed this summer in a county transportation project. Over the years, there have been several deadly collisions at the intersection, which borders the Thermal and Mecca communities. Signalizing the intersection is expected to improve traffic and pedestrian safety where fatal collisions occurred in 2014 and 2012. “This is a much-needed improvement for traffic safety

in the eastern Coachella Valley, particularly at this intersection which warrants a traffic signal,” said Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. “We hope the equipment upgrade and physical infrastructure prevents further tragedies from happening at this intersection. That requires drivers to be attentive and drive responsibly so that everyone can arrive at their destinations safely and get home to their families.” The Grapefruit Boulevard and 62nd Avenue Traffic Signal and Safety Lighting Project will also

Riana Albert sang, Rocketman, while others in the AMP classes also sang and played instruments to the delight of the gallery of ticket holders. These children are very talented and perform like professionals already. AMP students

have performed at major venues all over the Desert. Keisha D arrived wearing a huge headdress made of yellow and orange feathers. She spoke to the children performers and posed for photos. Keisha D makes her home in the Coachella Valley and performs regularly locally. Ellen Goodman from PSUSD spoke before the screening to alert guests about the programs PSUSD provides to local youth. Many local school

kids can’t afford college, and they are so talented and miss out on their chosen careers in entertainment. Scholarships are their only way to their dreams, and that’s where PSUSD Foundation comes in to help. 25 Valley schools are represented at AMP. The movie, Rocketman, was something different in the way of telling about one’s childhood and rise to stardom. Continues on Page 3

Trump would ‘listen’ if foreigners offered dirt on 2020 opponents

By Desert Star Staff Donald Trump said he would welcome kompromat

on his political rivals from any sources – including foreign powers – without necessarily

telling the FBI, throwing new bait to Russiagaters so desperate to see him impeached.

Gathering dirt on political opponents is normal in politics, US President Donald Trump told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. “I think you might want to listen, there isn’t anything wrong with listening,” Trump said. “If somebody called from a country, Norway, [and said] ‘we have information on your opponent’ – oh, I think I’d want to hear it.” “It’s not an interference, they have information – I think I’d take it.” Trump equated this type of information to ‘opposition research’ – common practice in American political campaigns. If the information arouses suspicion, the president said he would probably call the FBI,

but otherwise, real life simply “doesn’t work that way.” Somebody comes up and says, ‘hey, I have information on your opponent,’ do you call the FBI?” he said. “The FBI doesn’t have enough agents to take care of it... You don’t call the FBI. You throw somebody out of your office, you do whatever you do.” Trump made the bold comments just months after Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded his nearly two-year investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election. Despite the hype, Russiagaters were left bitterly disappointed after the probe failed to establish any criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Minnesota Overtures to Cuba Curtailed by Travel Ban By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota was at the forefront of bringing a slice of American culture to Cuba in 2015, but any continuation of that effort was sharply curtailed last week when the Trump administration announced new travel restrictions to the country. Four years ago, the Minnesota Orchestra took the first direct flight ever from Minneapolis to Havana and became the first American symphony orchestra to perform there in 15 years. Arturo Lopez-Levy, a visiting professor at Gustavus Adolphus College, says in overturning President Barack Obama’s more lenient travel policy, President Donald Trump is trying to appeal to Florida voters with the 2020 election in mind. “Remember that there is only 90 miles between Key West and Havana, so

why Trump is doing this? I think for clearly electoral reasons,” Lopez-Levy states. In reversing the Obama-era travel opportunities to Cuba, the Treasury Department argued that the country continues to play a destabilizing role in the Western Hemisphere in places such as Venezuela. Critics say the Trump administration supports a change in government in Venezuela and blames Cuba for interfering. More than 250,000 American tourists cruised or flew to Cuba in just the first four months of this year, many for people-topeople visits, which included educational and cultural trips. Kaifa Roland, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado, has studied Cuba’s tourism economy and maintains the administration’s actions will rally

The Trump administration’s reinstatement of a travel ban to Cuba makes it far more difficult for Americans to visit, reducing tourism dollars local residents had come to rely on. (hoeldino/Pixabay) Cubans to their government rather than turn them against it. “We had a new class of Cubans that were coming into their own, they were gaining capital, they were becoming capitalists,” she points out. “But when the United States is

outside trying to squeeze the Cuban government, all they are winding up really squeezing are the Cuban people.” The U.S. imposed an economic embargo against Cuba in 1960, assuming deteriorating living conditions

would make the Cuban people overthrow the Castro government. That didn’t happen, but the long-standing economic blockade continued until 2014 when Obama began an effort to normalize relations.

Nationwide Presidential Impeachment Demonstration

support for Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. Greg White, who leads the New Mexico organization, maintains that findings in special

counsel Robert Mueller’s report suggest an impeachment process is appropriate. His group wants New Mexico congressional delegates to know if they go June 14, 2019

that route, local residents will have their backs. “We believe that enough time has gone by that there are enough proven reasons for impeachment to occur, and that it’s ethically the right thing to do for the United States,” White states. Nearly 60 House Democrats and one House Republican, Justin Amash of Michigan, say they support impeachment. That still leaves 158 more needed to impeach, although if that happened, it’s unlikely the Republicancontrolled Senate would vote to convict the president. Saturday’s Las Cruces event will be held at Johnson Park in front of the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library beginning at 1 p.m. White maintains that when Mueller spoke publicly last month, he made it clear that it’s

up to Congress to hold Trump accountable, but adds that voters – Republican, Democrat, independent and unaffiliated – deserve a voice in the process. “Regardless of ideology, impeachment and the discussions around it are of such national significance that it must be laid to rest,” he states. “Congress should act so that it has a basis of fact that it can share with the American public.” White says the Saturday demonstration will include guest speakers who will explain the impeachment process and provide examples of what community members can do if they’re in agreement. Some political analysts warn against pursuing impeachment of the president, maintaining the Democratic Party and its 2020 candidates would face a political backlash. www.desertstarweekly.com

Sioux Falls Hosts First-Ever LGBTQ Parade

By Desert Star Staff SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The annual Sioux Falls Pride Festival this weekend will include a first-ever downtown parade as part of the activities. Adam Jorgensen, communications associate for the ACLU of South Dakota, said he grew up in Dell Rapids and came out as gay when he was 7 years old. Jorgensen said it’s important for people in the LGBTQ community to share their stories. He said he believes there are many gay South Dakotans, both young and old, who still are afraid to be who they are. “We’ve gotten notes and messages from people, and kids especially, just saying that hearing people’s stories and

The parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday along Phillips Avenue, will include 33 floats and people walking. Additional events will be held Friday and Saturday at Terrace Park. One of the parade-route coordinators is Cody Ingle, who moved to South Dakota from Indiana to work at a Sioux Falls church. Farmworkers Strike Over Intimidation, Threats

By Desert Star Staff MATTAWA, Wash. – Workers on a farm in south central Washington state have gone on strike over what they see as threats from management to meet production standards. The laborers on King Fuji Ranch in Mattawa, a small town north of the TriCities, say they contacted the farmworker union Familias Unidas por la Justicia after repeated threats of firing. The strikers are in the U.S. on temporary H-2A guest worker visas, which allow foreign workers into the country.

Edgar Franks, an organizer with the farmworkers’ rights group Community to Community Development, is in Mattawa and says the men were met with intimidation if they didn’t meet production quotas, which they saw as unreasonable. “They were being threatened that if they didn’t reach those production standards that they were going to be put on a list to get taken back to Mexico, or also with the possibility of them not being able to get into the H-2A program again,” Franks relates. Last month, mumps broke out on King Fuji Ranch, leading

to the quarantine of more than 100 workers. However, Franks says that hasn’t been a big factor in this strike. King Fuji Ranch did not respond to a request for comment by this story’s deadline. Franks says Familias Unidas por la Justicia is helping to correct a power imbalance that favors the employer over its workers. “There’s still the ability for H-2A workers to be represented and organized, and if there’s abuses at work and they’re constantly being threatened with deportations or being blacklisted, there’s

now a union here that can help them exercise their rights as workers,” he states. In May, Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill that provides more oversight for the H-2A program, which has expanded to more than 30,000 workers in Washington state. However, Franks notes that law doesn’t go into effect until August. Elton John was a musical genius as a child. He was timid and had an unhappy childhood in his relationship with his parents. Some of the scenes were almost like a dream sequence, but it got the message across. His life of looking for love brought many trials along the way with drugs, partners, and self-doubt. It showed how he had to reinvent a charismatic, over the top character, with wild costumes and a different persona than other rock and roll musicians. Actor Taron Egerton did a superb job of playing Elton John and even singing the songs Elton made famous. The movie was produced by Elton Johns husband, David Furnish, with some creative liberties in the Riana Albert, William Sturgeon, Keisha D, William Walsh, Katrina Munoz, Sara Robbins. ‘Stan & Ollie’ --A Tribute to Laurel & Hardy Before comedy duos like Hope and Crosby or Martin and Lewis, there was Laurel and Hardy--Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Stan Laurel was born in Lancashire, England in 1890 and Oliver Hardy made his earthly debut in Georgia in 1892. Hardy had a variety of jobs in his youth before he headed to Hollywood with dreams of becoming an actor. In the 1920s their lives were creatively connected by studio head Hal Roach (Danny Huston) who teams them up. The result is comedy history. The film, written by Jeff Pope and directed by Jon S. Baird, begins in 1937 as the two men are cavorting on set. First, we see Hardy (John C. Reiley) munching on goodies provided by the studio before he joins Laurel (Steve Coogan) in a charming soft shoe dance. The film then cuts to 1953. Sixteen years earlier they had been the rage, starring in comedy classics like “Babes In Toyland” and “Sons of the Desert.” Now their once lauded film career is on the wane due to the

passage of time and the advent of television. To regain their popularity once again they have signed up with producer Bernard Delfont (Rufus Jones) for a series of stage shows throughout Britain and Ireland. The tour is intended to show the public that they are alive and well and still as funny as ever. In the beginning, they don’t draw massive crowds, but as their tour progresses, their audiences grow. We, like the onscreen theater patrons, are charmed by their comedy routines as they recreate famous bits from their films. One is the double door sketch where they keep missing each other as Laurel goes in one door and Hardy heads in the opposite direction through a different door. Then there’s a hospital skit. Hardy is in bed with a bandage over his head and his leg in an overhead sling. When Laurel comes for a visit, the results are hilarious for the audience but a disaster for the patient. Throughout their relationship, Laurel is the

one who writes the comedy material and lines up deals, while Hardy is more carefree. He likes to bet at the track and leave the business details to his partner. There are some scraps and misunderstandings throughout the tour, but it is evident that the two share a loving bond for one another. Their wives accompany them on their tour. Ida is Laurel’s fourth wife (Nina Arianda), and Lucille (Shirley

Henderson) is Hardy’s very protective third mate. She worries about his health, which by now is on the decline. The two gals don’t hit it off, but they seem to care about husbands and their welfare. Coogan and Riley are perfect as the delightful comedy team. Thanks to marvelous makeup and their personal acting skills, Laurel and Hardy come to life and make us laugh.

“Stan & Ollie” is rated PG for some language and for smoking. Running Time: 1 hour, 37 minutes. The movie is now available on DVD with featurettes that show you how Jeremy Woodhead’s hair and makeup and Mark Coulier’s prosthetic makeup effects transform actors Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly into Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The results are amazing.

Make Room for New Favorites on the Grill

By Desert Star Staff Whether firing up the grill for a pool party, barbecue or even just a weeknight meal, one thing’s for sure: summertime means grilling season. Grilling takes many forms and flavors from casual favorites like burgers and hot dogs to flame-kissed vegetables and the artistry of a perfectly done steak. However, the www.desertstarweekly.com

possibilities don’t end there. By mixing and matching traditional grilled classics with options that have a variety of textures and flavors, you can shake up your at-home menu and add new favorites to your routine this grilling season. One ingredient to consider adding to your repertoire is Mrs. T’s Pierogies, which are available in 14 flavors. They’re stuffed with creamy

mashed potatoes, cheesy goodness and other big, bold flavors, and you can grill them right alongside your favorite barbecue fare. Consider these tips from grilling expert Susie Bulloch of “Hey Grill Hey” to add some new sizzle to your grill this summer by using pierogies. • Use good cooking oil to create a crispy exterior. Olive, avocado or canola oil can handle the heat of the grill. • Try two-zone cooking. Start by cooking on the lowtemperature side of the grill (known as indirect cooking) to slowly heat from frozen. Then move to the hot side of the grill (direct) to add a crisp texture and achieve a golden brown exterior. • Add layers of texture. With a soft interior and crispy exterior, pierogies pair well with juicy, chewy protein and a flavorful sauce, enhancing their texture and flavors. You can create these layers with a recipe like Grilled Pierogies with Steak and Chimichurri. • Don’t be afraid of color. Grilled to golden brown with aesthetic grill marks, you can add an extra crunch and boost of flavor. Find more grilling recipes and ideas at mrstspierogies. com. Family Features June 14, 2019

California Sues to Stop Merger Between Sprint, T-Mobile

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. The proposed merger between T-Mobile and Sprint hit a big roadblock on Tuesday, as state attorneys general from California, New York and seven other states and the District of Columbia sued to stop the deal, citing antitrust issues. The two companies provide wireless service to 13 million Californians, including many lower-income families who depend on prepaid plans for internet and cell service. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said a merger would kill competition in an already tight market. “The new company would have more than 50% of the market share in some parts of our great state, including Los Angeles, but also in places like Imperial County,” he said. “That combined market share would exceed the threshold at

which mergers are presumed to violate antitrust laws.” Currently, four wireless companies dominate the U.S. market: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. The lawsuit claims that decreased competition inevitably would lead to higher prices. Becerra said studies done in Europe showed a 16% to 20% average price hike when mergers shrank that market from four major players to three. Sprint and T-Mobile have argued that the merger would allow them to roll out new 5G technology faster and bring it to underserved rural areas. However, Becerra said economic analysis by his office shows California consumers collectively would end up paying $4.5 billion more per year. “It would result in significant price increases for Sprint and T-Mobile customers, month

An estimated 20,000 hours lifespan with minimal brightness degradation means this is a gift that will last. High-Speed Internet Access Critical for Students and Job Seekers By Desert Star Staff The job market is rapidly changing, thanks to new and emerging technologies. As a result, job training has become highly specialized, even at the high school level. While young people living in urban and suburban communities often benefit from on-site access to the specialized education that they will need for future career success, those living in rural areas must sometimes rely on distance education to get the same training, as smaller rural schools can’t always realistically offer a wide range

of specialized coursework. With this in mind, a recent report from NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association, highlights the need for highspeed Internet access in every community nationwide to meet the demands of tomorrow’s job market. With two job categories poised for demand, middleskill and STEM jobs, experts say that reliable rural broadband access will help ensure that there are enough trained workers available to fill the next generation of American jobs, while also helping to expand job

opportunities for a greater number of young people. Rural broadband providers continue to play a vital role. By leveraging their networks and working closely with local educational institutions, they are providing fiber connectivity and broadband to schools in harder-to-reach locations. As a result of these initiatives, a greater number of communities and schools can offer specialized coursework, career guidance and more to their students, helping to build local career opportunities and strengthen local economies. Those who have

directly benefitted from rural broadband echo this sentiment. “High-speed internet service in my rural area allowed me to participate more fully in high school and gave me the chance to explore more opportunities after graduation. I am so grateful for the access it provided me, I am now actually working at a broadband company myself and plan to study business management and marketing at school,” says Devin Bryant, a young adult living and working in Abbeville, S.C. “Good

service allows me to stay in my rural area near family and friends and still pursue the job opportunities I want.” With an effort already underway by NTCA to build smart and connected rural communities, experts say you can expect to see expanded educational opportunities and strengthened local economies nationwide. To learn more about these efforts, visit ntca.org. Access to reliable broadband is vital for today’s young people in their search for education and job training. StatePoint
