Worst shooting spree in US history, surpassing 2007 Virginia Tech The massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida has left 50 dead including the shooter, and 53 injured, topping a long and sad list of fatal mass shootings in American history. Virginia Tech, 2007: 32 dead: On April 16, 2007, 32 people, including 27 students, were gunned down in a massacre at the Virginia Tech
campus at Blacksburg, Virginia. Seung-Hui Cho, the 23-year-old shooter who committed suicide, sent a video to the media in which he said that the attack was retaliation against rich classmates who bullied him. Sandy Hook, 2012: 27 dead: On December 14, 2012, a gunman made his way into

Cyprus: The world in one island
By Anthony Grant What’s more exotic than Greece, not as far off as the Middle East and the original home of both Aphrodite and a cheese that refuses to melt? If you guessed Cyprus, you’re right—and from mythology to gastronomy with lots more in between, this island nation is one of the most mesmerizing anywhere. Its location in the easternmost corner of the Mediterranean Sea has made it coveted by empires ancient and more recent too: Phoenicians, Achaean Greeks,
Romans, Alexander the Great, Venetians, the British and more have at one time or another sunk their teeth into this beguiling island treat. And frankly, who could blame them? Yes, I know that in antiquity love, pilgrims came from all parts to worship aphrodite, who arrived here naked in a seashell, and that Cyprus was a stepping stone to the Holy Land during the Crusade. I also know that the feeling of centuries of history landing smack in the middle of your salad dish is
one of the pure delights. This happened one recent, sultry night on the terrace of the Karatello Tavern in the bustling Cypriot town of Limassol, the island’s main port. There I was, in the dark shadow of the castle built by Guy de Lusignan in 1193 and the place where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre, the Cleopatra of her time (and oh; Cleopatra passed through Cyprus too, Egypt not being too far away, but that’s another story), when the plate arrived and on it was the Karatello Salad featuring fried halloumi (a delectable sheep’s cheese unique to the island), green salad
By Desert Star Staff Proof that the best show in Las Vegas doesn’t have to cost a dime came in the form of the spectacular demolition of a 26-story tower from the legendary Riviera Hotel and Casino. Made famous by its mob connections and headliners such as Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand, the Monaco
Tower’s destruction was witnessed from a number of “viewing parties” and parking garage rooftops, as well as broadcast and streamed live. The neighboring Barrymore Hotel hosted a nostalgic crowd as it bid farewell to the strip’s first high-rise casino. While the tower destroyed in “the wee, small hours” of Tuesday morning was built
in 1987, the Riviera originally opened in 1955 by none other than Liberace and appeared in several films like Casino and the original Ocean’s 11. At a time when the mob controlled the casinos of Vegas, the Riviera “always was the Chicago outfit’s crown jewel in the desert,” Geoff Schumacher from the Mob Museum in Vegas told ABC.
leaves, orchard tomatoes and pomegranate seeds in a carob syrup vinaigrette. These are foods of the Bible, all-organic and did I mention that Cyprus is where St. Paul succeeded in converting the Roman Proconsul Sergius Paulus to Christianity? In any event, when faced with food as divine as this, the religious and culinary blissfully, if fleetingly converge. In Pafos you can explore the 4th century A.D. Roman mosaics of the House of Aion, the jewel of an Archaeological Park, which would be a reason alone to put off that planned trip to Mykonos and come here instead (did I just say that? Yes, I did.) There are too many
evocative traces of antiquity in Cyprus for me to list in this space, so instead I will shift to a somewhat more sybaritic topic: your best hotel bets. One straddles aforementioned boardwalk and ranks as one of the best resorts in the Mediterranean: called Almyra, it’s a family-owned property that features a range of room styles, most of which face the sea and all of which exude a breezy, light-drenched charm that would make them the envy of many a Malibu mansion. I recommend booking one of the Kyma Suites. Kyma is the Greek word for wave— you’ll see what I mean.
In the ’60s, the casino was licensed to Ross Miller, a Chicago bookmaker closely associated with the Outfit. His son Robert would become governor of Nevada in 1989. Federal crackdowns on organized crime supposedly cleared the syndicates from Vegas in the ’70s and ’80s, opening the door to socalled “gaming” corporations
and right-wing billionaires like Sheldon Adelson. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, who plan to use the site to expand the city’s convention center, now own the Riviera, which closed in May 2015. A second implosion in August will see the end of the Monte Carlo Tower.

Longevity may alter Financial and Life-Path Planning
By Janice Gough The concept of increased longevity brings many new considerations for life planning and its implications are far-reaching. Evidence-based studies indicate that longevity is based on two major factors, genetics and lifestyle choices. Human lifespan can be related to genetics, with the rest due to individual behaviors and environmental factors, which can be modified. Some argue that molecular nanotechnology will greatly extend human life spans. The present male life expectancy in the United

States averages 74 for males and 80 for females. In developed countries, the number of centenarians is increasing at approximately 5.5% per year. People are living about 30 years longer on average than they did a century ago. A child born today could have a life expectancy of 130. Over the next 20 years, the number of Americans 65 and older is expected to increase by more than 50%. The impact of longer lives effects aspects of retirement living including health, home, family, giving, leisure, work and finances. Stanford Center on Longevity and Allianz Life conducted an online survey of 3,000 adults in March 2016 to explore the topic of longevity and how it is leading people to consider alternative life path possibilities. Respondents were divided evenly among baby boomers (ages 52-70), Gen Xers (ages 37-51) and millennials (ages 20-36). Younger generations were looking to try more gutsy things and desired to save for shorter-term goals. When asked to design their ideal longer life, nearly half of those surveyed said they would prefer a nontraditional model that is unique to their interests. Their considerations involved trying different things in no established order, which including where they might work, taking career breaks, going back to school, and volunteering. What do these
added years mean for financial planning? The gift of time could alter the traditional school-work-marriagekids-retirement timeline. The Allianz “Gift of Time” report found that people are generally very positive about the possibilities that may come with longer lives, but that process of self-reflection identified many regrets about chances not taken and dreams not realized. While more than half surveyed respondents said they would travel more extensively or live in a different place, and one third noted they would take more risks in life. Although baby boomers
who are in or near retirement may stick to more traditional timetables, younger people may be more inclined to travel now and settle down later. These new generations may want different things than previous generations. Longer life spans create multiple goals beyond retirement. More than 90% of the respondents agreed that with an extra 30 years, it is not enough to just put aside money for retirement. People would need a more specific plan that falls outside the confines of traditional financial planning. Many people understand that a new paradigm is needed
to think about, plan for and fund a longer life. By taking short- and mid-term goals into consideration while saving for retirement, people will have more freedom to try different things, pursue their passions and explore alternative life plans.
nobody has copies of the CC&Rs, they can be retrieved from the County Recorder (often through the help of your friendly local title company). If your title insurance does not reference CC&Rs, perhaps it never was a CID. If there is a CID, perhaps the homeowners can resurrect it and start doing things properly - benefitting all owners. The CID association is the tool which helps people share land or even share a building, to everyone’s mutual benefit. Without the “HOA”, there is no structure. Some small associations ignore their CID status, their governing documents, and the applicable legal requirements, handling everything informallywhich works great until the first disagreement. Those associations then suffer with huge legal problems. Unfortunately, the CID Act becomes more complicated each year, and so far the Legislature has not seen fit to develop a simpler and scaled down Act for the smaller associations - associations which cannot afford lawyers to guide and train them. Instead of ignoring the law
and documents, hire a good manager and count on them to know the documents and recognize the rare occasions when legal help is needed. It is unfair to expect volunteers to keep up on all the changes in the law, service providers, and management practices unless one does it regularly, as do the professional community managers. Best, Kelly
to review the information given to you by management and be ready at the start of the board meeting to deliberate and make decisions based upon that information. In that short turnaround, nobody could reasonably be expected to have reviewed the information - so how can the board prove it followed the Business Judgment Rule? Get that squared away soon - Board packets should be distributed 3 or 4 days before the meeting, soon after posting the agenda. Anything less than two days ahead is unfair to the volunteer community leaders. Thanks, Kelly

Forgotten Association, Late Board By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq.
Dear Mr. Richardson: The subdivision of single family homes where I live was built [about 20 years ago]. There may have been an HOA at that time, but by the time I bought my home several years later, one did not exist. At this point, nobody who was around then remembers what happened to the HOA. Some homeowners have been making inappropriate additions, neglecting their landscaping, and doing other things that lower our property values. Is there any way to resurrect an HOA? Or is there some better option? B.C., Chula Vista Dear B.C.: For an association to qualify under the Davis-Stirling Act as a “Common Interest Development” there must be a recorded declaration of covenants. Desert Hot Springs City Council Approves Walmart By Carlos Herrera, DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Ca. - After nearly six years of debate, Walmart is officially coming to Desert Hot Springs. The city council voted to approve the retail giant’s plan to build at an empty lot on Palm Drive and Camino Aventura. The approval comes after Walmart circulated a petition on it’s proposed store in early March. The retail giant surpassed the minimum number of signatures needed. Since Walmart circulated the petition, the council had the option to either accept the plan as it is or put the initiative to voters at an election in November. The council decided to accept the plan as it is, and
approve the plan. “There’s no doubt about the good things Walmart will bring to our city,” Desert Hot Springs Mayor Scott Matas said. Those who oppose the plan, argue small businesses will suffer. According Mayor Matas, the addition of Walmart brings more good news than bad, as it is expected to bring in half a million dollars in tax revenue. “Walmart generally goes against city business plans across the nation, but it suits the needs of our city,” Matas said. Despite some opposition, the new Walmart may be up and running as soon as next summer. Source KMIR

Sanders Vows to Fight On After California Defeat
By Kitty Alvarado SANTA MONICA, Ca. - “I am pretty good at arithmetic and I know the fight in front of us is a very, very steep fight,” said Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Bernie Sanders to a room full of supporters in Santa Monica, despite suffering major losses in California and most of Tuesday’s primary elections. Sanders vowed to fight on, “We will continue to fight for every vote and every delegate we can get!” His supporters welcome the battle. Political analyst Hank Plante says this is all part of the process, “Bernie Sanders is going through the seven stages of grief right now
including denial and he will get to acceptance. Remember eight years ago Hillary Clinton lost but it took her eight days before she endorsed Obama, it takes a while for this news to sink in not just for you but for your staff members and for your followers.” Despite Hillary Clinton’s historic win, she knows her path forward includes convincing Sanders supporters to join her cause. “I want to congratulate Senator Sanders for the extraordinary campaign he has run,” said Clinton after she declared the party’s nomination victory at her campaign headquarters in Brooklyn. Some of Sanders’ supporters say the fight
now is more about making sure his ideas are part of the Democratic platform. “I want him to keep fighting and keep pushing for our progressive agenda to help move this country forward,” says Palm Springs resident David Weiner. And they still dream of his name being on the ticket. “I would be open to a Sanders / Hillary ticket and if it’s a Hillary / Sanders ticket I would be okay with that as well,” says Weiner. And Sanders drives that hope by remaining defiant. “Thank you all the struggle continues,” shouted Sanders over a cheering crowd. Source KMIR
Oregon Among Top 10 Best State Economies
The shoe company Nike is headquartered in Oregon. (TonyTheTiger/Wikimedia Commons) By Desert Star Staff could be a star in the future. PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon The survey website is inching its way toward the WalletHub ranked top of state economies, and Oregon’s economy 10th
best in the country. Jill Gonzalez, an analyst for WalletHub, says the state government’s handling of
the budget is one of the most admirable facets of Oregon’s economy and a good sign overall. “When we’re looking at the state government surplus, one of the highest in the country at over $1.50 per capita,” she says. “Most states would love to be over a dollar surplus. Many of them actually have a deficit. So Oregon has a lot of things going for its own economy.” WalletHub measured three criteria in determining states’ rankings: economic activity, economic health, and innovation potential. Oregonians’ rise in personal income, as well as being home to prosperous companies such as Nike, placed Oregon in the top 10 for both economic activity and health. One of the strongest metrics of Oregon’s economy was its large increase in payrolls.
With the recent passage of increased minimum-wage legislation, Gonzalez says the state can expect those numbers to continue trending upwards. “Oregon already is really leading the way, for it had the fourth highest payroll change when we compared 2015 to 2014, at that 3.5 percent mark,” says Gonzalez. “So after passing that bill, we would probably see that increase even more.” Although Oregon’s economy showed many good signs, it was outpaced by its two West Coast neighbors. Washington and California ranked, respectively, two and three. Utah came in on top. Other studies have been kinder to Oregon. Earlier this year, a Bloomberg study said Oregon had the nation’s best-performing economy.
Day Symbolizes Pay Gap Between Moms and Dads
By Desert Star Staff SEATTLE – Just a week and a day after Mothers’ Day, comes Mothers’ Equal Pay Day, a date that marks how far into 2016 a mom typically has to work to make up for last year’s difference in income between moms and dads. The observance today is based on a National Women’s Law Center study that shows mothers make 73 cents for every dollar fathers make. Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, head of the organization Moms Rising, says another study, from Stanford University, illustrates how mothers are discriminated against when it comes to hiring and pay. “Moms are 80 percent less likely to be hired than nonmoms for the same job,” she points out. “And in fact they’re www.desertstarweekly.com
also – for highly paid jobs – offered $11,000 lower starting salaries. Dads on the other hand are offered $6,000 more.” In Washington state, mothers make less than 69 cents for every dollar fathers make. Annually, the gap amounts to $19,000 less for Washington mothers. Rowe-Finkbeiner says U.S. lawmakers should update the Paycheck Fairness Act so that wages in companies are more transparent and patterns of inequality can be identified. “When we’re talking about discrimination against moms, we’re talking about a lot about subconscious, implicit bias,” Rowe-Finkbeiner states. “There isn’t a committee of people saying, ‘Let’s pay moms less.’ It’s a lot of subconscious, small decisions
that significantly add up over time in a really big way.” Rowe-Finkbeiner says paid family leave, affordable child care, and easy access to health care can also help lower the wage gap. As head of Moms Rising, Rowe-Finkbeiner hears many stories from working mothers. In one case, a woman came to a sad realization when she looked around and found most of her coworkers were women. “She walked up and she asked the director, ‘Why are there so many women here?’” Rowe-Finkbeiner relates. “And he said, ‘Because I can pay them less.’ And then she wrote in and said the part that’s heartbreaking, which is ‘I hadn’t yet learned I was less valuable than a man.’” June 15, 2016

Medical Aid in Dying Becomes Legal in California Today
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Starting today, medical aid in dying, also known as assisted suicide, becomes legal in California. Mentally
competent, terminally ill patients are able to seek a prescription from their doctor that allows them to die peacefully in their sleep. Elizabeth Wallner, a single
mom from Sacramento with stage four colon cancer, said just having the prescription is a relief, whether she ends up using it or not. “Death itself doesn’t
really scare me,” she said. “What scares me the most is dying slowly and painfully and traumatizing my beloved son, Nathaniel, my parents and siblings and the other people in my life, whom I love.” End-of-life advocates expect 1,500 Californians to ask their doctor for the prescription right away and another 34,000 patients a year to inquire about the process. Matt Whitaker, California state director, of the nonprofit group Compassion and Choices, said patients in California no longer have to move to another state to pursue this option. “Feel empowered to begin these conversations with your physician now,” he said. “Feel empowered to talk about your wishes around your end-of-life process. By Desert Star Weekly CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Carbon pollution from power plants would increase across the West if a proposal to merge California’s energy market with PacifiCorp goes forward, according to a new study by the California Independent System Operator. Shane Levy, senior press secretary for the Sierra Club, says the move would result in an increase in the use of older coal-fired power plants that have higher greenhouse gas emissions. “A production modeling was released that shows
this proposed merger would result in more carbon emissions, more carbon pollution and more coal pollution in air and water across the West,” she states. Operators say coordinating energy grids is key to keeping costs down, enhancing reliability and helping states meet clean energy requirements. According to a Casper Star-Tribune report, Wyoming legislators and Gov. Matt Mead worry the plan could allow California to import its policies of getting at least 50 percent of its electricity from
clean sources by 2030. An initial feasibility study found merging western grids could save customers almost $9 billion over the next 20 years. Levy says the new report underscores why details matter in how regional markets are designed. “A proposed merger could, in turn, prolong the life of some of the dirtiest plants in the
West,” he maintains. “So, yes, there are potential benefits, but we need to make sure that a market is developed in such a way that ensures that carbon emissions continue to decline.” Levy says fast-tracking the merger could provide a lifeline for Pacificorp’s coal-fired power plants, which make up 60 percent of its energy production. “We should really look

Facts behind deadliest US mass shooting in Orlando The Orlando nightclub gunman, 29-year-old US citizen Omar Mateen, who voiced his allegiance to Islamic State, was able to legally purchase an entire arsenal of guns and perpetrate the massacre despite several FBI interrogations over alleged links to terror suspects.
ISIS-inspired attack Following the deadly shooting spree in Orlando, Florida, local FBI chief Ron Hopper acknowledged that New York-born US citizen Mateen had professed his Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ ISIL) allegiance during a 911 call he made from the nightclub at the time of the attack. The IS propaganda machine was also quick to claim responsibility for the mass shooting by distributing a message via Amaq News that the atrocity was “carried out by an Islamic State fighter.” However, the IS claim may be nothing more than a propaganda move to capitalize on a massacre perpetrated by a lone-wolf attacker who could have had no direct links to the terror group, security experts told RT. The suspect’s former wife described him as abusive and emotionally and mentally unstable, and said that her family had to “rescue” her from her ex-husband during their divorce. Meanwhile his former coworker noted that Omar Mateen frequently “talked about killing people” and made racist and homophobic comments, but the company refused to act because it did not want to be accused of Islamophobia. Gunman long known to FBI While confirming that Mateen had not been under active investigation at the time of the deadly Sunday assault, Hopper revealed that the 29year old, who was brought up by a family of first-generation Afghan immigrants, had been on the FBI’s radar for years. In 2014, Mateen was interviewed by FBI agents over
his alleged contacts with Moner Mohammad Abu-Salha, likely the first ISIS-inspired American suicide bomber in Syria. Mateen had allegedly visited the same Mosque as AbuSalha, but the federal agents determined that the 29-yearold’s contact with the jihadist was “minimal.” The case was then closed, Hopper said. A year earlier, the FBI interviewed Mateen twice about “inflammatory comments” the suspect allegedly made to a coworker about possible ties to international terrorism. Unable to “verify” the comments, the FBI was forced to close the case, Hopper said, adding that in both cases the gunman cooperated with investigators.
Guns purchased legally Because the suspect had been cleared after being interviewed by the FBI, it allowed him to legally obtain a Glock handgun and an AR-15 rifle. Following the deadly shooting a Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives said that Mateen purchased the guns he used in the assault in Florida within the “last few days.’” The attacker had worked for the world’s largest security services firm G4S since 2007 and carried a gun as part of his duties, the company said, adding that the company has been trying to ascertain whether any guns used in the attack were related to Mateen’s work. Florida law requires a mandatory three-day waiting period for handgun purchases, but no permit, registration or licensing is needed to buy or own rifles, shotguns or handguns. Condemning the horrific attack, US President Barack Obama said that the tragedy is a reminder “of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on” a weapon. Deadliest mass shooting in US history With at least 49 killed and 53 injured, the Orlando massacre has become “the
most deadly shooting in American history,” according to Obama. The US president called the shooting an “act of terror and an act of hate,” conducted by an individual “filled with hatred.” Initially police announced that 50 people had been killed, apparently mistakenly counting Mateen as a victim. The second deadliest US shooting spree was the Virginia Tech assault of April 2007. An outburst of gunfire at a Virginia Tech dormitory followed two hours later by a string of attacks at a classroom building, killed 32 students, faculty and staff and left 17 others injured. The Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre closes the top three deadliest US shooting rampages. A total of 26 people, including 20 schoolchildren, were killed at the school on December 14, 2012. The shooter, Adam Lanza, 20, also killed his mother at their home. Tragedy immediately politicized, reignites gun-control debate As world leaders, from Washington to Moscow and Vatican, expressed their deepest condolences over the tragic loss of life, US politicians rushed to capitalize on the tragedy for their political aims. Republican presidential hopeful, Donald Trump initially took to Twitter to say he was “right” about the danger of radical Islam in America: “Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don’t want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!” “Because our leaders are weak, I said this was going to happen - and it is only going to get worse,” Trump said in a longer statement released on Sunday afternoon. “I am trying to save lives and prevent the next terrorist attack.” “We can’t afford to be politically correct anymore,” added Trump, once again slamming Obama who “disgracefully refused to even
say the words Radical Islam.” Trump’s opponent, Clinton called the shooting “an act of terror” that calls for more efforts to combat terrorism and introducing stricter gun controls. For now, we can say for certain that we need to redouble our efforts to defend our country from threats at home and abroad. That means defeating international terror groups, working with allies and partners to go after them wherever they are, countering their attempts to recruit people here and everywhere, and hardening our defenses at home,” Clinton said in a statement on Sunday. Responding to Trump’s attack, Clinton’s communication director Jennifer Palmieri wrote that, the Republic has offered “no real plans to keep our nation safe and no outreach to the Americans targeted, just insults and attacks.” Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders stayed out of the political bickering, just saying “our ... hopes go out to all those who were shot that they can recover.” “Twenty-five years ago, I believed that in this country that we should not be selling automatic weapons which are designed to kill people,” Sanders said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” early Sunday. “We have got to do everything that we can on top of that to make sure that guns do not fall into the hands of those who should not have them: criminals, people who are mentally ill. So that struggle continues.” For his part, the Libertarian party’s presidential nominee Gary Johnson called the Orlando shooting “both cowardly and infuriating” as he warned against politicizing the slaughter: “We must allow the authorities to do their jobs, understand how this attack came about, and then respond accordingly. It is not a time to either politicize or jump to conclusions.”

You will now feel there is more than enough inner strength and energy to meet all the expectations and demands of work and the world, both self imposed and from others. You will bring beauty and balance, prosperity and connectivity to your work. Also, detail, order and organization. These you will teach and then ask of others as well. Careful. Be patient.
TAURUS It’s time to tend to yourself now. To spend time where you live in order to order and organize both inner and outer realities. It’s been a long long time (years?) since you’ve been able to assess needs in your personal life. Since you’re been focused outwardly, saving the world, things as home are quite in need. Seeking assistance is practical. For there is much work to do. Afterward there may be a move.
GEMINI Consider your needs for a while. Allow yourself to think of all the things you need in all aspects of your life. Consider the state of your home and family, your relationships and money, your communication and sense of well-being. Are all these as they should be? Do you offer comfort, calmness and ease to others? Do this life assessment, observing quietly over time? Allow

emotions to be acknowledged should they appear.
CANCER It’s good for you to seek, ask for and assess the truth, available to you from your feelings and senses. Then it is good to share with people what you feel about everything, and why. When we speak the truth about something, sincerity and integrity enter every relationship and interaction. When speaking the truth, be neutral, ask questions, be kind and courteous. Truth sets everyone free. You, too.
LEO You are being very responsible. Your creative endeavors are being applied to daily life situations. Daily life is transformed. Is there something else or different you would like to be doing in your life allowing you to be out and about into the wilds, serving the animal (or bird or fish) kingdom, offering them food, shelter, medicine and comfort? Do you want to be elsewhere? However, you are here. Needed here.
VIRGO You have new vital energy. You’re active, self-confident, happy, purposeful and enthusiastic (filled with God). You’re so busy, there’s no time for relaxation. When you’re not working night and day, counting your blessings, notice how
you’ve expanded into a new sense of self confidence. It’s been growing all along. Notice too past life gifts coming forth.
LIBRA A spiritual essence (message) begins to stream into your daily life. It expands you and provides the gift of understanding. It is alleviating all judgments you may be carrying since childhood. Those judgments affect your present life and although you think you’re happy, the shadow of judgment is eventually projected upon those around you. Even in the best relationships. Forgiveness releases us in the same way truth does.
SCORPIO What expansion is occurring in your life? Does it feel like a revolution? What new direction is being taken along with the seeking of a new self-identity, new focus and activities? Everything’s changing for you. It’s not just your perception. Things you’ve sought eventually appears. Now all you have to do is begin to prepare without feeling overtaken, overwhelmed or dissolved. Remain poised at the center.
SAGITTARIUS Remember to do your work with composure, inner poise, exhibiting no pressure toward self or others. You are being
watched (scrutinized) as to your ability to create Right Relations, balancing leadership, friendship, keeping the two separate with finesse, elegance, grace and skill. This is quite a job. You most likely already display all of this. Now more is called for.
CAPRICORN Many days, weeks and months of work reach a summit. If you look back on the autumn of last year, something began. Now it has reached a point of manifestation, of being seen in the world. Perhaps this is you, who is presently always in a state of transformation and transfiguration. There are perhaps lots of thoughts concerning travel, going far away, experiencing new cultures, foods, people. Yes, go. There’s a place for you.
You shift between pain and feeling wounded, grieving and being comforted. It’s such an interesting polarity. Both can be felt as extremes. However, you seek the way in between, q point of poise and you realize it’s a “razor’s edge.” Yes, it is. A crossroads is coming up. A decision, too. You need sensitive handling. Tend to yourself, your money and resources with great care. You reach out to family and bring everyone who is separated together. AQUARIUS Tend to money carefully. Put money away for future needs. Always do this second, when money comes in. Tithe some of it first. This assures you a constant supply in terms of your life needs. When we give, more is returned. Humanity is yet to learn this. That the new materialism is the new Sharing Society. You could be leading humanity in this endeavor. You’ll say to others, “Don’t worry, be happy!”

‘Voice’ star Christina Grimmie dies after shooting at Orlando concert
By Desert Star Staff Singer Christina Grimmie, the former YouTube star who rose to fame on ‘The Voice’, was shot dead at her concert in Orlando, Florida. She was earlier reported to be fighting for her life. The shooter took his own life at the scene. “It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn’t survive the gun shot wounds. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning. If you’d like to give back to Christina’s family in her memory, please consider donating to the families GoFundMe page in their time of need,” her representative said in a statement, as cited by ABC. Grimmie, 22, was performing the show at The Plaza Live concert venue with her pop band Before
You Exit when the shooting happened. The actual incident took place as she was signing autographs after the show. The unidentified gunman, whose motive remains unclear, reportedly managed to fire off five bullets before the singer’s 22-year-old brother tackled him. The assailant somehow managed to fatally shoot himself afterwards. Orlando police officials said at a conference the singer was shot around 10:45pm on Friday. According to the statement, the shooter had two guns in his possession. No further information was provided. Witnesses told the Orlando Sentinel of hearing five gunshots. Josh Call, who worked a vegan hot dog stand outside the venue, was among the first to rush in after hearing the shots. He saw Grimmie’s body on the ground, with blood streaming from her head, and another person injured nearby. He added that a man was
also lying in a pool of blood, his face “completely disfigured. “I don’t think anyone expected something like this to happen. It was horrifying,” he said. Grimmie was earlier reported in critical condition, before her representative
confirmed the bad news online. The New Jersey native first entered America’s hearts at the tender age of 15, when she started shooting videos and posting them on YouTube. She did covers of popular songs from the likes

of Adele and Miley Cyrus, before finally making it big on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ in 2014, where she finished in third place. Maroon 5’s Adam Levine coached the budding star.

Millions Of Animals Living In World’s Zoos And Aquariums To Be Afforded New Protections And Humane Standards By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, -American Humane Association, the country’s first national humane organization, and the first to create historic protections for animals on farms and ranches, film and television, and other environments where animals live in human care, is announcing today the launch of a global program
dedicated to helping ensure the welfare and humane treatment of the remarkable, endangered and disappearing animals living in the world’s zoos and aquariums. In the face of what scientists are calling a “Sixth Extinction” with species disappearing at a rate 8-100 times higher than expected since 1900, zoos and aquariums are playing an
outsized role in preserving the vital web of life on Earth. Serving as arks of hope for endangered animals and powerful ambassadors for conservation, these institutions are drawing more visitors each year than all sporting events combined. And as people become increasingly aware of and invested in the fate of the world’s creatures, more and more are rightly demanding that the millions of creatures who live in zoos, aquariums and conservation centers be afforded good treatment and welfare. To help achieve this, American Humane Association, which has been at the forefront of virtually every major advance in the protection of animals over the past 140 years, has developed the first-ever independent, scientific and evidence-based third-party humane certification program focusing solely on the wellbeing of the animals living
in these institutions. The program’s comprehensive standards were created by an independent Scientific Advisory Committee made up of the most well-respected, iconic names in animal welfare, animal ethics, and the conservation community, and cover everything from good health to good housing, good feeding, good management, appropriate behaviors, including the display of natural behaviors at the individual and group levels, the lack of abnormal behaviors at the individual and group levels, social interactions between animals and the ability to self-separate, positive, healthy and humane interactions between animals and handlers, physiology, activity levels, use of space, disease and mortality, meeting of federal and state regulations, thermoregulation, lighting/ shade needs, environmental quality issues, staff knowledge and training, veterinary,
operational procedures, animal husbandry procedures, environmental enrichments, choices and options for animals, safety measures, nutritional needs, food quality, food safety, air quality, water quality, appropriate sound levels for animal life, consideration of diurnal/ seasonal patterns, appropriate veterinary/health plans, plans to recognize adverse medical trends, treatment protocols/ management plans for emergency medical situations (injuries, escapes, etc.), training of staff interacting with animals, use of positive reinforcement in any animal husbandry/training programs, transparency and openness of daily operations and animal care, and much more. Adding to the rigor of the program, the implementation of the required standards is verified by independent auditors.

50 Years After Miranda: A Look at IL’s Juvenile Justice System
By Desert Star Staff Today marks 50 years since the U.S. Supreme Court made Miranda warnings mandatory, and legal experts say Illinois is taking small but positive steps in bolstering those rights for young people accused of crimes. The Miranda ruling states every person must be informed of his or her rights when arrested. But juvenile justice advocates say many
times young people waive those rights without really understanding them. University of Chicago law professor Randolph Stone is praising parts of Senate Bill 2370, which would require a simplified Miranda warning for minors. “It’s the same thing that we want for our children or any child, that the child be properly educated about the rights that they are getting ready to waive, and we found
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The practice of “direct file,” in which a prosecutor decides to file adult criminal charges against a youth, varies widely by county and disproportionately affects young people of color, according to a new report. Researchers from three nonprofit groups that work on juvenile justice also found that Yuba, Kings, Sutter, Napa and San Joaquin counties have the highest rates of direct file and San Francisco has the lowest -- because there, all juveniles are granted a fitness hearing before a juvenile-system judge. “What this highlights is that it’s not being used consistently by prosecutors,” said Maureen Washburn, one of the report’s co-authors and a policy analyst for the Center
on Juvenile and Criminal Justice, “that it’s being used kind of at the discretion of a prosecutor and doesn’t align with rates of crime that are happening in that county.” An initiative on the November ballot called the Public Safety and Rehabilitation Act of 2016 would eliminate direct file for youth. It would extend opportunities for good time credits and parole to adult prisoners. The ballot measure is the subject of a joint hearing of the Public Safety Committees of the state Senate and Assembly today in Sacramento. Washburn said youthful defendants deserve a fitness hearing because the juvenile system offers a much better chance of rehabilitation. “It touches both the
that in many instances the kids just have no idea what they’re giving up,” he states. That law is currently sitting on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s desk awaiting his signature. Stone and other reform advocates, however, say Illinois could do more to protect juvenile rights by requiring legal counsel for all accused offenders under age 18. Current Illinois law only requires a defense lawyer for children 13 or younger.
The new bill would extend the legal counsel requirement to children up to age 15 during custodial interrogations. But that would only apply to serious cases, such as murder or sex offenses. Stone argues that having a lawyer present for all juveniles would reinforce the Miranda protections. “The police in their interrogation techniques often cause kids to waive their rights and then sometimes to even falsely confess to crimes
that they didn’t commit,” he points out. “It’s even more important that they have some legal representation at this critical stage.” According to the Illinois Juvenile Justice Initiative, only about 20 percent of young people understand what their Miranda rights are, and the least understood warning is their right to talk with a lawyer before being questioned by police.

MUSIC Genre-spanning titles celebrate the old and new BY ROBERT KINSLER
A number of recent reissues, as well as highlyanticipated returns mark some strong recent album releases.
Artist: The Rides Title: Pierced Arrow (429 Records) You might like if you enjoy: Stephen Stills, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Kim Wilson Tell me more: Lightening strikes twice for the Rides, the supergroup (featuring singer-guitarist Stephen Stills, singer-guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd and keyboardist Barry Goldberg), whose new sophomore effort is a topnotch followup to 2013’s “Can’t Get Enough. Armed with a collection of soulful originals (the blues-rocker “Kick Out of It, smooth soul rocker “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination and bluesy “Game On among the great tracks) and a cover of Willie Dixon’s “My Babe, the trio is rounded out by drummer Chris Layton and bassist Kevin McCormick. One of the most powerful songs on the set is “Virtual World, whose Buffalo Springfield-styled musical
palate and right-on lyrics of the emotional cost of living in a technology-immersed society should be required listening. Information: 429records.com.
Artist: Glen Campbell Title: For the Good Times (Varèse Sarabande Records) You might like if you enjoy: Glen Campbell, Keith Urban, Alan Jackson Tell me more: Although Glen Campbell is best known for a string of timeless crossover hits he scored in the 1960s and ‘70s, the singerguitarist had a busy decade in the 1980s focusing on country music. Standouts and previously-unreleased material from that decade is featured on the newly-issued “For the Good Times,â€? a 16-track collection that includes the theme song from the 1980 hit film “Any Which Way You Can,â€? an affecting previously-unheard version of Dave Loggins’ “Please Come To Bostonâ€? and a beautiful banjo-anchored take on JD Souther’s “Faithless Love,â€? the latter showcasing Campbell’s high-soaring tenor
vocals. Campbell’s talent was always such that he could make songs penned by others his own; listening to a tender version of Jimmy Webb’s “Do What You Gotta Do serves as a painful reminder of the 80-year-old Campbell’s absence from the music scene (he suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease). Information: VareseSarabande.com
Artist: The Muffs Title: Blonder and Blonder (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: The Pixies, the Pandoras Tell me more: The deluxe re-release of the Muffs’ “Blonder and Blonder is a fan’s dream come true. Not only does the original 14-track 1995 release sound better than ever, but the new version includes seven bonus tracks (two U.K. B-sides and five previously unissued Kim Shattuck demo recordings). The straight-up post-punk album includes so many great songs, stretching from the opening blast “Agony and scream-laced “Oh Nina to the crunchy rocker “Red
Eyed Troll and tuneful “Just a Game. Omnivore Recordings has issued “Blonder and Blonder on audio CD, as well as on baby-blue vinyl. The 20-page full-color booklet that comes with the CD is wonderful, providing extensive liner notes, photos and even a song-by-song reflections by Shattuck. Information: omnivorerecordings.com.
Artist: Band of Horses Title: Why Are You Ok (Interscope) You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Band of Horses’ 2010 album “Infinite Arms Tell me more: If Neil Young and Crazy Horse had joined forces with members of Oasis and the Shins it might sound something like the dreamy expanse minded so masterfully by Band of Horses. The quintet’s new album “Why Are You Ok is a beautiful triumph, with the ambitious “Dull Times/The Moon growing from an ethereal soundscape to a raging rocker. The lush “Solemn Oath,
introspective “Hag, countrystyled “Throw My Mess and driving “Casual Party are among the other masterfully penned and performed songs on the disc. Information: bandofhorses.com.
Artist: Garbage Title: Strange Little Birds (STUNVOLUME) You might like if you enjoy: Garbage, the Pretenders Tell me more: Garbage’s sixth album “Strange Little Birds finds the rock quintet exploring the better part of its electronica and alt rock personalities with equal zeal. Singer Shirley Manson remains one of modern rock’s greatest lead vocalists, and she is backed by a quartet of talented musicians able to unleash powerful and affecting songs that are never anything less than original. The ethereal “Blackout, propulsive “Empty and alluring electronica-tinged “Night Drive Loneliness provide more than enough reasons to pick up Garbage’s brilliant “Strange Little Birds. Information: garbage.com.

Orlando shooter had ‘gay tendencies’, claims his ex-wife
By Desert Star Staff The rapidly-shifting theories behind what motivated Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen suggests he may have been struggling with his sexuality and frequented the nightclub he eventually attacked. Several witnesses have come forward saying they frequently spotted Mateen in gay bars and on a gay messaging app, while his former wife Sitora Yusufiy had
told Brazilian television that he had “gay tendencies”. Speaking to SBT Brazil on Monday, with her fiancé Marco Dias translating in Portuguese on her behalf, she also said Mateen’s father called him gay in front of her. She claims she was told by the FBI not to tell this information to the US media. The revelations come amid allegations that Mateen was a regular at Pulse nightclub,
the scene of the massacre, and had asked out one former classmate on a date. Speaking to the Palm Beach Post, the unidentified man who attended a police academy with Mateen said he believed he was gay, but not open about it. We went to a few gay bars with him, and I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer,” the source said in reference to Mateen’s
supposed request for a date. He described Mateen as “socially awkward” and not liked by many people. Four regulars at Pulse nightclub told the Orlando Sentinel that they saw him drunk at the club before. Cord Cedeno claimed Mateen had been a regular for years and had witnessed violent outbursts by him. “Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent,” Pulse regular Ty Smith said. Smith and his husband dismissed Mateen’s father’s claim that the gunman had been outraged when he once saw two men kissing in Miami. “That’s bullcrap, right there. No offence. That’s straight-up crap. He’s been around us,” he said in an interview at the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida on Monday. “Some of those people did a little more than (kiss) outside the bar,” Smith said. Another regular at Pulse,
Kevin West, handed over his phone to the FBI when photos of Mateen were released after the shooting. Speaking to the LA Times (LAT), West claims he had been messaging Mateen on the gay chat and dating app Jack’d for a year before the shooting. They never met until the night of the shooting when West said he recognized Mateen when he was dropping friends off at the club. “He walked directly past me. I said, ‘Hey,’ and he turned and said, ‘Hey,’” West said, according to LAT, adding, “I could tell by the eyes.” Accusations about Mateen’s sexuality and alcohol consumption would be at odds with the organization by which he was supposedly inspired. NBC reported that the FBI are investigating the claims that Mateen visisted the nightclub before the shooting. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) issued strong homophobic statements after the attack and has a strict no-alcohol policy.
10 videos of hooligans hijacking Euro 2016
By Desert Star Staff A spike in violence at the Euro 2016 championships in France have forced harsh rhetoric and measures from political and football officials – but looking at the videos of fans clashing in France, one would ask: will one suspended disqualification do the trick? The most violent clashes took place in Marseille between Russian and English fans, preceding the game on Saturday. The brawls restarted with particular fury right in the stadium immediately after the 1:1 draw. On Tuesday, the Russian Football Union was fined €150,000 ($168,000) while UEFA also warned that the national team will be expelled from Euro 2016 if Russian fans are involved in more violent episodes. Media have been reporting how some 150 well-organized Russian fans opposed several thousand Brits and sent them fleeing into the streets around the stadium. The French and UEFA will rightly be asking themselves searching questions about how the segregation of fans within the Vélodrome stadium broke down,” UK Home Secretary Theresa May said Monday. The British minister acknowledged, however, that some England fans had also behaved “inexcusably.”
Seven English football fans, three Frenchmen and an Austrian have received prison sentences in France for taking part in the violence. The Russian fans, dubbed “ultra-violent” by Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin, have so far been punished with two arrests, both for pitch invasions and not related to violence on the streets. But this may change as on Tuesday AFP reported a group of 29 Russian fans were searched in a hotel near Marseille and may be deported. At the same time, a bus with some 50 other supporters
going to Lille was stopped on its way with those on the bus also fearing deportation. While Moscow was clearly not thrilled with the Russian supporters and called on them not to give in to provocations, numerous videos have been posted online highlighting the scale of violence in France. Like these two, where chairs are flying high between Russian and England supporters: And this one, where again British fans set a café on fire: This one, where local French youth get involved in nasty fight with a couple
of days ahead of the match involving Russia in Marseille: And this one, where German fans are purported to be kicking people carrying Ukrainian flags and later taunting them on the streets. While Russia has already got its suspended disqualification and fine, UEFA is also looking into the violations by Croatia’s and Turkey’s supporters, who set off fires during the match two days ago (Croatia won 1:0). Meanwhile, France has banned alcohol near Euro 2016 venues. The tournament will finish on July 10.
By Carlos Herrera The nation’s obesity epidemic continues to grow and it’s now led by an alarming increase among women. According to new health statistics, for the first time, more than 4 in 10 women in the United States are obese. An alarming new study reveals there are now more obese women in the U.S. then there are men. According to experts, it all comes down to how women take care of other people before themselves. According to new numbers reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 4 in 10 women in the U.S. are obese. Obesity rates for men and women in the country had been the
same for almost a decade. But, in recent years, women have surged ahead and now over 40 percent are obese, compared to 35 percent of men. Experts say although they are not surprised, the new statistics are scary. They believe unhealthy eating habits are to blame. “The pattern of how we eat and taking care of everybody else instead of feeding ourselves nutritious food really is part of why women have a higher rate than men,” Dr. Jeralyn Brossfield, medical director of the Wellness Institute at Eisenhower Medical Center, said. For Dr. Brossfield, the reason why the problem is getting worse for women is a mystery. She says issues
in our society, such as toxins in the environment and emotional eating contribute to the rising problem, but she says it is not only happening in the U.S. “The predictions have been that we are going to have a trajectory that will continue unless we do something drastic,” she said. According to the World Health Organization, 15 percent of women worldwide are obese, that is compared to only 11 percent of men. As for theories that women’s hormones are to be completely to blame for weight gain, Dr. Brossfield says it is only part of the problem. Meanwhile, Dr. Brossfield says the nation’s leading public health problem is not increasing as dramatically as
it was, but the new numbers show it is not improving either. “Diet is really our key component and eating diet that is filled with healthy fats, proteins and vegetables is the key to weight loss and look at ways to reduce stress and reasons that drive emotional eating in our society,” she said. Researchers also looked at obesity rates among different races and found disparities that have existed for many years. Obesity continues to be most common among black women with about 57 percent being obese. That is compared to 47 percent of Hispanic women, 38 percent of white women, and 12 percent of Asian women. What’s up at Apple
Apple’s next-generation Mac operating system, coming this fall
By Desert Star Staff macOS Sierra, coming in the fall, is the new name of Apple’s Mac operating system. It includes features like auto unlocking via Apple Watch and Siri integration. macOS Sierra is the new name of Apple’s nextgeneration Mac operating system, unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 13. The macOS name, which does away with Apple’s long-standing OS X naming scheme, brings the name of the Mac operating system in line with iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. macOS Sierra includes some impressive new capabilities, including Siri, an automatic unlocking feature, universal Clipboard support, new iCloud integration, Apple Pay for the web, and more. Siri on the Mac is accessible through dedicated icons on the dock or the menu bar and it features functionality unique to the Mac like the ability to search through documents to find specific files and an option to pin search results to the Notification Center or drop them into files. Siri can also do things like search through Photos, make phone calls, set reminders, add meetings to calendars, initiate FaceTime calls, and more. Deeper iCloud integration makes all of the files on the Desktop and Documents folder of a Mac available on all of a user’s devices, including other Macs and the iPhone and the iPad. On iOS devices, files stored in these locations will be available in the iCloud Drive app, and they’ll be available through iCloud.com and on Windows machines through the iCloud for Windows app. Universal Clipboard, a new Continuity feature on macOS Sierra and iOS, lets users copy content on one device and paste it on another device. Another Continuity feature allows an authenticated Apple Watch to automatically unlock a Mac when in close proximity, doing away with the need to enter a password on a password protected Mac. Tabs are expanding beyond Safari and will be available in all Mac apps that www.desertstarweekly.com
support multiple windows, like Maps, Mail, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and more. Tabs will also be available in third-party apps. Tabs will let users do things like browse between multiple locations in Maps, copy and paste between Pages documents, or jump between multiple email drafts in Mail. As with iOS 10, macOS Sierra supports Apple Pay in the web browser, letting users pay for purchases made on the web with Apple Pay. Payments are authenticated through either a connected iPhone or a connected Apple Watch. A new “Memories” tab in Photos is designed to create curated collections of images like from a first birthday party or family vacation. Photos uses new deep learning algorithms to recognize people, places, and things in images using facial, object, and scene recognition, utilizing the information to group images into intelligent collections. There’s an album that features People and a “Places” option to display all images on a world map to see where they were taken. macOS Sierra will run on an entirely new Apple File System (APFS) that’s built around SSDs and other flash-based media. It was engineered with native encryption as a “primary feature,” with three levels of protection from no encryption to single-key encryption to multi-key encryption. Alongside the new file system, there’s a feature called Optimized Storage that frees up space when a Mac starts getting full by deleting infrequently used items in iCloud and offering reminders to delete app installers, duplicate downloads, caches, logs, and more. Messages will now support rich links for previewing web links and watching video clips within the app, and it will support iOS 10 sister features like bigger emoji and “Tapback” options for responding to messages with quick icons like a heart or a thumbs up. Other new features in macOS Sierra include Picturein-Picture for watching videos while doing other tasks and a redesigned Apple Music app.
macOS Sierra is available for developers starting today, and Apple plans to release a public beta in July. The
operating system, which will be free to download, will see a public release this fall. macOS Sierra will run on MacBooks and iMacs
produced in 2009 and later and MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Mac Pro models made in 2010 or later.

Smoking is a popular choice because it infuses flavor throughout the meat, while extended cook times at low temperatures make it extra tender. Another advantage is the chance to create a wide range of unique flavors using wet and dry rubs, as well as seasoned wood chips and planks.
Choose your cut
Virtually any meat can be smoked, but the most popular cuts of meat to smoke are brisket, ribs, pork shoulder or turkey, all of which are typ ically large in size. Guarantee a great experi ence with Omaha Steaks Brisket for smoking or Whole Pork Butt, which were created with the competitive barbecue and smoking circuit in mind.
Dry meat and prepare rub.
Ready your rub
Rubs are often used to add flavors and surface texture to a cut of meat. For best results, brush meat with cooking oil or another liquid ingre dient (such as yellow mustard) before adding the rub. Spread the rub on a clean plate and place the meat on it. Coat both sides with the rub by gently pressing the meat on the plate.
Set up the smoker
Some pit masters consider their equipment as vital an ingredient as the meat or flavorings they choose. Preparation varies from one recipe to the next, but one constant is the importance of maintaining a steady temperature. As you prepare your charcoal, be conscious of where you’ll place any wood chips or other flavor enhancers for maximum impact.
Coat meat generously with rub.
Slow and steady
Sensational flavor takes time to build, so plan to dedicate several hours to your task. Often, smoked foods require foil wrapping for at least a portion of the cook to retain moisture. Plan to check in at regular intervals to restock wood chips, flip or rotate meat and apply a fresh coat of seasoning or spices.
