MUSIC
BY ROBERT KINSLER
Roots, Americana And Blues Music On Tap
Roots and blues music are celebrated on a trio of outstanding new releases. Artist: Michael Ubaldini Title: Rabbit Foot Carnival (Blackwater Records) You might like if you enjoy: Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones’ “Exhile on Main Street” Tell me more: Acclaimed singer-songwriter Michael Ubaldini is back with Rabbit Foot Carnival, a bona fide masterwork that finds the acclaimed artist using rich melody-adorned songcraft to ignite his literate observations on life, love, death, faith, the
frayed American dream and the uncertain forces that propel each of us toward an uncertain tomorrow. Effortlessly dipping into roots rock, Americana, country blues, folk and gospel across 14 original songs, Ubaldini uses that vast sonic canvas along with his signature songwriting to zero in on these especially troubled times. Early standout cuts on the album include the irresistible rocker “Lazarus Blues” (bolstered by the terrific gospel vocals of Julie Harris), spirited celebration of faith “Free If You Want It,” rollicking old school rocker “Rats In Your Attic” and haunting acoustic blues sortie “Roadside
Prayer.” The magic continues with late disc standouts like the driving Rolling Stonesflavored “Sabre Jet,” poignant “General Store,” and “Love Up Close,” and rollicking blues rocker “Black Diamond Train.” Information: rocknrollpoet.com. Artist: Sass Jordan Title: Bitches Blues (Stony Plain Records) You might like if you enjoy: Grace Potter, Janis Joplin, Sass Jordan Tell me more: Following up on her 2020 album Rebel Moon Blues, Canadian songstress Sass Jordan is set to release her latest foray
into the enduring genre via the wonderful Bitches Blues. The album puts the celebrated singer’s powerful soprano front and center, with her signature vocals enhanced by the work of an amazing cast of players (guitarists Chris Caddell and Jimmy Reid, bassist-harmonica great Steve Mariner, drummer Cassius Pereira, keyboardistbacking vocalist Jesse O’Brien). The album features eight enticing electric blues tracks, including the blistering opener “Still Alive and Well,” heartfelt piano-anchored blues ballad “Even,” compelling “Still The World Goes Round,” Deltaflavored “You Gotta Move,” infectious “Ain’t No Big Deal On You” and yearning “Change Is Coming.” Bitches Blues will be available June 3 via Stony Plain Records. Information: StonyPlainRecords.com. Artist: Ghost Hounds Title: You Broke Me (Maple House Records) You might like if you enjoy: Buddy Guy, Dennis Jones
Band, Vintage Trouble Tell me more: Fans of both Chicago and Southern blues will find plenty to love about Pittsburgh-based troupe Ghost Hounds. I was fully impressed when I caught the band open for The Rolling Stones in Austin last year, and the sextet fully delivers on the energy they displayed in concert via their new album You Broke Me. Lead singer Tre Nation’s potent lead vocals are the central attraction, but the contributions of the rest of the band shine bright across the wonderful nine-track disc; guitarist Johnny Baab, guitarist Thomas Tull, bassist Bennett Miller, drummer Blaise Lanzetta and keyboardist Joe Monroe add magic on every track. The mighty blues cut “Through Being Blue Over You,” smoking title track, infectious blues rocker “Baby We’re Through” and blistering version of Howlin’ Wolf’s 1956 classic “Smokestack Lightning” are among the highlights on You Broke Me. Ray Liotta, ‘Goodfellas’ star, dead at 67
By Desert Star Staff According to reports, Ray Liotta, the legendary star known for his careerdefining performance in crime traditional “Goodfellas,” passed away in his sleep while filming a movie in the Dominican Republic. He was 67. Liotta, who also starred in the seriously acclaimed movie “Field of Dreams,” had been shooting the upcoming flick “Dangerous Waters” on the island before he passed away. His rep, Jennifer Craig, confirmed to the Hollywood Press reporter. His cause of death and other details were not immediately known Thursday. According to the outlet, his fiancé, podcaster and
business owner Jacy Nittolo, 47, had been with him on the motion picture shoot when he died. The pair got engaged around Christmas 2020. The last known image of the star shows the actor holding Nittolo’s hand as they headed to an early dinner at Spruzzo, an Italian restaurant in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, on May 1. Known for his icy blue eyes and tough-guy persona, the New Jersey-born actor was renowned for his role in the 1990 Martin Scorcese flick, “Goodfellas,” where he played mob rat Henry Hill, alongside co-stars Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. However, in reality, Liotta was a gentle guy who had
never really been in a fight. “ I do not go around beating people up,” Liotta told The Post in October 2021. “I’ve never been in a fight. I avoid it at all expenses.” Liotta initially made a splash in the Jonathan Demme-directed motion picture “Something Wild,” making him a Golden World nomination in 1987. In 2005, he won a Primetime Emmy for his guest function on ER as an alcoholic ex-con, Charlie Metcalf, who concerned the hospital with a cirrhosisrelated disease. He also appeared in the motion pictures “Police officer Land,” “Corrina Corrina,” and “Unforgettable.”.

Are Americans Shifting to Working with Smaller Companies? By Janice Gough In the past, We have assumed that small and locally owned businesses were going to charge a premium over the same goods you can find at the big-box stores. People used them because they were local, and people chose them over driving miles, which ended up costing more due to gas prices. Big Box stores are losing sales, and it may be a paradigm shift for Americans! This week, I was shopping at one of our locally owned hardware stores (Builders Exchange). I asked the manager why several items were lower than the big box store charged.

I was stunned that the prices here were 10% to 20% lower than you would pay with their competitor. Why is that? I got curious and asked the manager. He explained that their payroll may be lower and other business expenses. He stated that he had local employees, and labor costs could be lower in our city. Their store is purchased from companies with the same “low cost” structure. Used by big stores. Their network of wholesalers is well established. But their expense ratio for running the business could be lower. This store has always benefited local contractors who buy from them, as our sales taxes in our town, DHS, are the lowest in the Valley. As a result, their business is booming as never before. However, realities seem to have flipped: the small companies are thriving while big ones are suddenly under enormous pressure due to inflation, while larger retailers are experiencing falling sales and less consumer demand; we must question Why? Due to retail shifts and the inability to find cost savings within the corporate structure itself. This is a potentially momentous change. It could mean that the future of American enterprise could be switching to smaller companies rather than the larger ones. Of course, it could take years
for this to become obvious, but it is already happening with many large retailers. Most of these vast companies got that way in good times when there seemed to be no limits to growth. But, unfortunately, those times have changed decisively. Even on the current level, stagflation puts enormous pressure on companies who have benefitted from decades of the loose-money wave toward riches. Now they are dealing with a potential nightmare: trying to sustain a vast corporate empire in the face of consumer revolt against higher prices! It’s remarkable to consider the possibility that the stagflation could create the most significant restructuring of American enterprise in our lifetimes. Large retailers are being struck right now because of shifting consumer behavior. So it’s wake-up time for companies to realize how hard personal finances are taking a hit. Many of these large retailers have been unable to find ways to avoid costshifting to lower costs on the retail side. As a result, all the most prominent retailers face falling sales, which translates to lower stock valuations. This is a good wake-up call that inflation can be hell for consumers…but just as rough on producers. The economy is one extensive network, and
breakage in one area can break everything else too. Why do these large retailers seem entirely unable to internally shift costs to anywhere but the consumer? In the past, high inflation would lead internal assessments to find waste. Whether it could be caused by underperforming and overpaid employees or by supplier contracts that needed to be reassessed. This seems not to be happening for now. And the reason has to do with a deeper level of stagnation at the corporate level that no- one really wants to talk about… namely, that many corporate positions are overpaid. Somehow their system is broken. Hire and hire, pay more and more, and never fire! Employees in these firms. have formed their own protection, and the stockholders have little to say about it. Corporations have been saddled with countless mandates to provide an endless array of benefits to employees, far more than mere health care and extending to every aspect of life. No one wants to admit it, but Covid became, for millions, the great excuse for not working. This is one reason the “threat” continued for as long as it did. People simply did not want to go back to the office, and Covid offered an officially approved excuse. It
was like a “sick pass” given to a whole country, and people took advantage. They still are! And since no one is looking over your shoulder, a more significant effort is placed on doing whatever it takes to get paid…whether you are working. These companies’ “Human Resources” division is entirely out of control. They are becoming a proxy effectively for government itself within the private sector. Insurance against litigation is an enormous expense. Compliance with diversity mandates has puffed up the workforce so much that changing that has become almost impossible, if not outright illegal. Smaller companies do not have to face the high cost of keeping up with all the compliance or lazy employees. Instead, their employees show up to get paid! As a result, they can keep tight control over expenses and, in turn, make their products more competitively priced. Shopping locally helps your community thrive. Hopefully, this change will benefit us all. Janice Gough is a Financial Consultant located at 1111 E. Tahquitz Cyn.Bldg.#120, Palm Springs. A Big Week for Otters in California
By Suzanne Potter/PNS This week, in honor of World Otter Day, conservation groups are looking to raise awareness about efforts to restore sea otters and more areas of the California coast. Right now, sea otter populations are mainly concentrated on the Central Coast, between Santa Barbara and an area just south of San Francisco, hemmed in by predatory white sharks. Andy Johnson, the California representative for Defenders of Wildlife, said they used to live all the way up the north coast. “We’d like to, at some point, maybe shift some otters northward and get them into cooler waters, where sea otters used to be before they were hunted to near extinction,” Johnson explained. “Let them maybe help restore some of the kelp along the north coast and improve the biodiversity of those habitats.” The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s surrogacy program has successfully reintroduced sea otters near Elkhorn Slough. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will release a report to Congress this summer on the feasibility of expanding the program. Otters save
kelp beds by eating sea urchins, which can devour the kelp if not kept in check. Johnson noted that the otter population has rebounded over the past century but has a long way to recover fully. “We think that there were between 16,000 and 20,000 otters historically on the California coast,” Johnson reported. “Right now, there are about 3,000 animals. There were only about maybe 50 otters back in the early 1900s.” This week, the California
State Assembly also passed a resolution to proclaim the 20th annual Sea Otter Awareness Week, from Sep. 18-24. Disclosure: Defenders of Wildlife contributes to
our fund for reporting on Climate Change/Air Quality, Endangered Species and Wildlife, Energy Policy, and Public Lands/Wilderness.

HOROSCOPES ARIES
The month ahead sees you as a hard worker, working towards and within your values. If you don’t actually know your values, then observe yourself – actions, focus, communication. Note you’re faster than usual, as Mars has entered your sign. Take extra care with what you love. Note everyday what you value. Note your desires, your ambition, expectations, your impatience or impulsiveness. Your senses are more alive. You may need to eat more. You are veiled with the rays of Taurus.
TAURUS As Aries takes on your qualities, you take on the dynamic qualities of Aries and the meditative qualities of Pisces. You still have Vulcan’s ability to make gold out of iron (the personality). You have so many abilities, you can share a few, yes? Notice being more energetic, active, forceful and even, at times, aggressive (shocking!). For a moment or two it’s ok for you to be overly assertive. Rarely are you this way. You move between action and reflection, work and rest, selfobservation and observing the world. You are the alchemist.
GEMINI It’s your birthday month and you have become more of a Pisces. Meaning? More sensitive, more reluctant to push the river, a sense that confidence has taken a different path. You’re working more in

secret, can be blamed for things you didn’t do, there’s stronger instincts and intuition that the past is somehow merging with the present and everything becomes more private. Dreams (day & night) appear, imagination becomes creative. Music (more of it), please.
CANCER It’s most important to think about cooperation and how you impact a group. With all your emerging thoughts and ideas, you may be inclined to talk louder over others, attempt to dominate everyone and everything. Perhaps not outwardly, but internally and in your thinking. it’s best to think and work cooperatively, with team effort towards the goal of Goodwill. It’s also important to focus on preparing daily agendas, schedules, plans and goals. They become your context and protection.
LEO You are the leader, the one everyone looks to, hopes to be, learns from, emulates, wants to be like. (Be grateful.) Your accomplishments are recognized. This pleases you. I have written before that for a Leo to evolve others must see, recognize and praise their efforts, gifts, abilities. Praise is how (especially) Leos can more fully identify themselves as creative, saying, “I AM because I create (and you see it).” All of this occurs. You also may have thoughts of travel. Follow up on this idea. It’s an indication of things to come.
VIRGO Boldness sweeps over you, a hunger for expansion, a journey, an adventure, a restlessness that won’t accept no for an answer. Your mind and heart do need expansion and actually new experiences, too. All the energy you’re feeling will propel you into travel, new studies, new interests, new books and people, along with clear thoughts and opinions. This may lead to dialogues and discussions. Allow yourself to shine forth and share what you know. You know so much!
LIBRA Do keep these words in your mind and heart for the entire year...to love more. Careful with projecting suppressed anger (from long ago to present) toward others, especially those close to your heart. You may be unaware of this. The issues are joint money and resources, conflicts and crisis concerning different values. You can no longer keep hidden that which you turn away from. This is both subtle and overt. Careful of consequences. Begin with knowing your true needs. Then love them (and others) more. Life moves easily from then on.
SCORPIO Everything may become challenging, especially interactions with coworkers, partners or intimates. Should you encounter conflict, it’s a reflection of the need for more awareness, more growth and harmony. This is
why conflicts occur. Conflict contains information. If you struggle long enough a new level of harmony emerges. Be as dynamic, truthful and cooperative as possible. Everything will be conflictual, then it resolves, then there’s rapprochement, then there’s harmony, then there’s love. Help someone in the meantime.
SAGITTARIUS Interesting new (more) energy is available affecting daily routines, work schedules, workloads. When not working focus on health - exercise, diet, walking, running, yoga, etc. You must have a daily regime of physical activity or frustration, restlessness, mental and emotional distortions result. It may be difficult working with others. Harmony slips in and out of your work world. Be aware of this. Don’t dispute anything. Recite silent Ohms. Laughter is the best form of meditation.
CAPRICORN Questions. Do you have lots of energy with an equal need for contemplation and rest? Are you beginning a new level of creativity of creativity? Tend to loved ones, especially your partner (first). Have no expectations as to results at first. Later, you will experience more play, pleasure, fun and more sleep. It looks like you need some new things for the home. Something new and beautiful. What is it? Is your home comfortable? Or does it need more comfort? You need comfort, too.
AQUARIUS Note how you feel more instinctive, protective and have the need for deep security. Are events occurring concerning family, home, homemaking, repairs? Are you thinking about family matters? Are you far away? Moodiness, restlessness can occur so you construct a shell over your daily life. If past issues emerge, talk with someone who love you and listens deeply. Always you are asking, “Where is my home?” You are from the future. That means your home is different than others’ homes.
PISCES Work slowly on goals and believe in their outcomes. Create more efficiency in daily life. Consider professional needs. It’s soon time to share with everyone your ideas, plans, projections, wants and needs. Communications may be somewhat difficult. Allow this to occur, step back, observe impatience and/or impulsiveness. This is Mars at work, pushing things forward. Tend to hands and feet with care. Sew and draw, garden and paint. Use your mind to make beauty and order. Neptune continues its journey through Pisces. Why Are the GOP Politicians So Scared of the NRA? By Desert Star Staff For decades, professional politicians have cowered in fear of the NRA, but now millions of people are no longer frightened by the organization’s financial might and ability to influence elections. Instead, they participate in politics online as part of their daily routine. But who are the people in charge of the organization? It’s easy to see why the NRA is a target for critics and how much money it makes for members of Congress. While the NRA aims to educate the public about gun control and the right to own firearms, its political arm has been extraordinarily influential for years. Political arms of the NRA pour millions into Republican campaigns, and they target candidates who advocate tighter gun laws. However, the NRA is not the only lobbying organization. And the NRA does more than influence elections. It even has an op-ed section that writes editorials for conservative publications, and they are notorious for spreading anti-gun propaganda. Some NRA leaders have made themselves targets of the gun lobby. The notorious Wayne LaPierre sparked outrage after the 2012 Newtown school shooting
when he argued that more guns should guard schools and that more restrictions on assault weapons were unnecessary. The NRA’s meeting with LaPierre drew the ire of gun safety advocates. Houston mayor Sylvester Turner criticized the NRA’s convention, claiming that it showed “poor taste.” Wayne LaPierre is the NRA’s chief executive. He has a habit of disappearing during times of high stress. In the summer of 1998, he was absent from his wedding ceremony. Why did he go missing on his wedding day? This is one of the many questions he answers in his research on American life. The NRA is a lobbying organization that has an influence over government policy. In 2018, NRA’s political power declined as more members turned anti-gun, and the NRA turned harderline. It argued that guns are intrinsically tied to patriotism and that efforts to restrict access to guns were a “plot to seize firearms.” Trump, meanwhile, is the NRA’s ‘former president.’ Despite the NRA’s recent rebuke of gun control, Trump spoke at the Houston annual event convention in Houston three days after the Uvalde school shooting. Donald
Trump rejects gun regulations and calls for a school safety overhaul. Trump’s suggestion that school buildings should have just one entrance echoes calls from US Sen. Ted Cruz earlier this week. School and safety experts say that such a measure is unrealistic, as many schools have thousands of individuals who could take hours to go in and out of buildings. As a result, a single entrance could also pose a fire hazard. Older schools would also need to spend significant money renovating their buildings to meet such a standard.
Its infighting and lawsuits have hampered the organization’s budget and reputation in Washington. However, it has also opened the door for more extreme groups to gain traction. Although the NRA is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit social welfare organization, it’s not required to disclose its donors. However, a large portion of its funding comes from membership dues. Some significant contributors to the NRA include the “Ring of Freedom” donors. Some NRA magazines also feature prominent advertisers, such
as Springfield Armory. The NRA ILA lobbies Congress regularly and files quarterly reports to Congress. The NRA has been under fire after many mass shootings in the United States. However, it’s worth remembering that despite the NRA’s savvy marketing, many of these gunrelated tragedies were not committed by NRA members. The NRA is a powerful political force, and millions of dollars are funneled to their political campaigns. Many Republican politicians are intimidated by the NRA’s tactics to position themselves as an authority.
Vote Expected on CA Bill to Phase Out Plastic Mail Packaging
By Suzanne Potter/PNS The California State Assembly is expected to vote this week on a bill that would phase out some of the plastics used in online shipping because they clog up landfills and harm marine life. Assembly Bill 2026 would force companies mailing packages to and from California to find more sustainable packaging and phase out plastic mailers, bubble wrap, air pillows, molded polystyrene and loose-fill such as packaging peanuts. Ashley BlacowDraeger, Pacific policy and communications manager for the nonprofit conservation group Oceana, said most of these items never get recycled. “The majority of that is landfilled and makes its way into the environment where it harms marine life,” she said, “and it also interferes with the ability to recycle, as it contaminates recycling. It gums up the machines.” Friday is the deadline to pass any and all bills out of the Assembly. Opponents have said manufacturers would have to spend money switching over to new packaging types, resulting in www.desertstarweekly.com
higher prices for consumers. Supporters have noted that Amazon has already moved to eliminate plastic packaging in India and announced plans in Germany. Blacow-Draeger said a huge amount of plastic ends up in the ocean, where it can lead marine life to suffocate or starve. “They can choke on the plastic pieces when ingested, or it can create a false sense of feeling full,” she said. “And
so, they feel like they’ve been eating their natural food in the ocean - but in fact, their stomachs are being filled with plastic pieces.” The bill would make exceptions for plastics used in shipping certain medicines, medical devices and some types of food. Manage Heart Health for Stronger Brain Health By Desert Star Staff The same risk factors that contribute to making heart disease the leading cause of death worldwide also impact the rising global prevalence of brain disease, including stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia. The global death rate from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is increasing even more than the rate of heart disease death, according to the American Heart Association’s Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics 2022 Update. Globally, more than 54 million people had Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in 2020, a 37% increase since 2010 and a 144% increase over the past 30 years (1990-2020). In addition, more than 1.89 million deaths were attributed to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias worldwide in 2020, compared to nearly 9 million deaths from heart disease. “The global rate of brain disease is quickly outpacing heart disease,” said Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D. M.S., FAHA, the past president of the American Heart Association (2020-21), a professor of neurology and epidemiology at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and
Surgeons and an attending neurologist at New YorkPresbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. “We are learning more about how some types of dementia are related to aging and how some are due to poor vascular health. As a result, it’s becoming more evident that reducing vascular disease risk factors can make a real difference in helping people live longer, healthier lives, free of heart disease and brain disease.” According to the statistics update, people with midlife hypertension were five times more likely to experience impairment in global cognition and about twice as likely to experience reduced executive function, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, the risk for dementia associated with heart failure was nearly two-fold. Experts recommend maintaining a healthy weight, managing your blood pressure and following other hearthealthy lifestyle behaviors that support good brain health. At the same time, studies show maintaining good vascular health is associated with healthy aging and retained cognitive function. Optimal brain health
Photos courtesy of Getty Images includes performing tasks like movement, perception, learning and memory, communication, problem-solving, judgment, decision-making, and emotion. Cognitive decline and dementia are often seen following a stroke or cerebrovascular disease and indicate decreased brain health. Consider these steps to live a healthier lifestyle and protect your heart and brain health: * Don’t smoke; avoid secondhand smoke.
* Reach and maintain a healthy weight. Be mindful of your eating habits; eat foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, sodium and added sugars. * Be physically active. Start slowly and build up to at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity (brisk walking) each week. As an alternative, you can do 75 minutes of vigorous physical exercise, or a combination of the two, to improve overall cardiovascular health.
* Get your blood pressure checked regularly and work with your health care team to manage it if it’s high. * Have regular medical checkups and take your medicine as directed. * Decrease your stress level and seek emotional support when needed. Support for Caregivers Means Better Care for Loved Ones with COPD By Desert Star Staff You know someone who takes care of a sick parent or spouse. You may even know someone who cares for a person with COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD is a lung disease that makes it hard to breathe and worsens over time. Like other diseases, it often affects more than the person living with it. COPD can affect the whole family. Joel Africk found this out firsthand. “I watched my mother serve as the main caregiver for my father with COPD,” said Africk, president of the Respiratory
Health Association (RHA). “The follow-up appointments, the coordination of his care with his care team, the supervised exercise - my mother juggled it all. She was the driving force in my dad’s care.” Luckily, because of his work, Africk said, “I was able to put our kitchen table conversations in front of a dedicated team of patients, caregivers and providers, and ‘The COPD Caregiver’s Toolkit’ was created. We worked to simplify some of the most complicated parts of being a COPD caregiver and provide resources to help.” Caregivers who feel
confident about what to do often provide better care for their loved ones. “The COPD Caregiver’s Toolkit” offers advice on various topics for patients and caregivers, including how to prepare for doctors’ appointments, navigate changes in home life, provide help after a COPD flare-up or hospital stay and stay mentally and physically healthy through it all. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) Learn More Breathe Better(r) program recently partnered with RHA to update and make the toolkit more broadly available online. Learn More Breathe Better works to improve the
lives of the millions of people living with COPD and other lung conditions. In addition, NHLBI reaches patients, providers, researchers, and caregivers through its educational efforts. According to Jim Kiley, M.D., director of NHLBI’s Division of Lung Diseases, “COPD is a complex disease that over time can become debilitating. That’s why early diagnosis, treatment and disease management are so important. In addition, it can be overwhelming for many patients and their families.” To help with disease management challenges, “The COPD Caregiver’s Toolkit”

It was a hot day but with an occasional brisk wind to keep everyone cool outside as they waited for the flower drop. People stayed inside and toured all the areas of the Museum. Finally, a Desert Hot Springs High School Color Guard and two Bagpipers brought the big plane out on the runway. Fred Bell, Vice Chairman, spoke to the vast crowd. He named all the planes that would be in the air for the missing man formation. The planes flew overhead many times. All vintage warplanes

The planes flew over, did the Missing Man Formation and the people were allowed on the grounds for the Flower Drop. It was a windy day, and the expected flower drop was a miss as most of the flowers landed on the Museum roof. People on the roof were throwing carnations into the crowd. It was a beautiful Memorial Day for all; one man said it was a lot to see for so little money; he said it was well worth it.
Veterans Say Battling Climate Change is Key By Suzanne Potter/PNS This Memorial Day, state and local leaders are called for climate change, the battle of our time crucial to national security. Advocates called on President Joe Biden to invoke the Defense Production Act to speed up the transition to renewable energy and phase out dependence on fossil fuels. Mayor Daniel Lee of Culver City is a veteran of the Air Force and the California Air National Guard who currently works as project director at the James Lawson Institute. He said the invasion of Ukraine is being financed by Russian oil and gas. “The war in Ukraine is a resource war,” said Lee. “And the more the world doesn’t rely on Russian oil for electricity for heating or cooling, the less we are apt to engage in resource wars and the more we can slow down the effects of climate change.” Russian oil and gas make up 40% of Europe’s energy consumption, but countries are working to reduce that dependence as quickly as possible. www.desertstarweekly.com
New Mexico State Rep. Debbie Sariñana D-Albuquerque - also is an Air Force veteran. She noted that climate change fuels extreme drought and massive wildfires across the West - so leaders must act to slow the damage. “We have people dying for our country,” said Sariñana. “And what kind of country do we have if climate change continues? Our planet can’t sustain this much longer. So we’re just borrowing the world from our grandkids.” Five hundred state and local leaders, including Lee and Sariñana, have signed a petition from the group “Elected Officials to Protect America” calling on the administration to declare a climate emergency and implement a clean-energy plan. They both serve as members of the group’s leadership council. Disclosure: Elected Officials to Protect America contributes to our fund for reporting on Climate Change/ Air Quality, Energy Policy, Public Lands/Wilderness.

The Unseen Mental Health Effects of the Pandemic
Photos courtesy of Getty Images
Eating disorders are on the rise and treatment can help FAMILY FEATURES
S
ince the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic, increases in mental health issues have been widely documented. While diagnoses like anxiety and depression are more common, other problems, such as eating disorders, have not been discussed as frequently. Eating disorders have also increased in the past two years and can be life threatening, especially if left untreated. Today there are more treatment options available and more access to care for those who need help. “Eating disorders are on the rise, and medical science is advancing in this area to continually improve treatment outcomes,” said Dr. Margherita Mascolo, chief medical officer at Alsana, a leading eating recovery community and treatment provider. “Our patients consistently report a decrease in eating disorder symptoms after treatment, and just as importantly, our survey data shows they also report a much better quality of life post-treatment. This data is very encouraging for patients and their families.” Eating disorders affect people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, races and socioeconomic statuses. An estimated 20 million women and 10 million men in the United States have an eating disorder, and by 2030, there will be a 5% increase in the number of people with eating disorders, according to the Academy for Eating Disorders. One of the challenges in treating eating disorders is finding treatment options and models of care that work with individual needs and schedules. For example, college athletes, young mothers and women with careers all have distinctly different lifestyles, so a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment is impractical and unlikely to succeed. One potential solution is an approach that treats the whole person, such as The Adaptive Care Model at Alsana, which meets clients where they are in recovery. This holistic approach strives to create an inspiring healing experience that focuses on the patient’s total health. Creating a compassionate community of care is key to this treatment model. The program is based on five core areas:
Medical Treatment
Someone working to overcome an eating disorder must build health resilience and establish a physical foundation for recovery. A collaborative and compassionate approach allows for your medical issues to be monitored and addressed by specialty-trained physicians. The medical dimension seeks to empower

you by educating you on the organic causes of your symptoms and how to overcome them.
Relational Exploring and growing your own sense of purpose and self-expression can empower you to connect on a deeper level with yourself, others and your sense of purpose or true calling. This means rediscovering your true self, feeling confident in expressing your potential and working toward your goals. Instilling hope, inspiration and motivation along your healing journey can provide you with the tools and knowledge to thrive long after completing treatment so you have a positive outlook for the future.
Nutrition
Proper nutrition plays an important role in recovery, as you must learn to balance nourishment and pleasure on a physical and emotional level to restore a nurturing relationship between food and your body. Guidance and exposure to balanced food choices and real-life eating experiences helps build confidence and promotes enjoyment of meal experiences, not just the food itself.
Movement
Physical activity can be healing for both the mind and body. Listening and responding to the body creates a strong foundation of body awareness. Movement is an avenue toward achieving optimal health, but it’s also a way to learn to appreciate and connect with your body on a deeper level.
Therapeutic
Through therapy, you can work to heal from trauma, negative feelings, fears, and challenges that may be standing in the way of recovery. Practices that treat the person (not the disorder) can prove effective. No treatment plan is one-size-fits all, and finding the right care is essential to recovery. “Focusing on the patient’s total health is an innovative treatment model that is proving effective,” Mascolo said. “Our caregivers provide personalized care, compassion and support to complement the medical, nutritional and psychological therapies in a holistic treatment model.”
How to Identify an Eating Disorder The first step in effective treatment is identifying a problem. Discussing the answers to these questions with your doctor may help you pinpoint an eating disorder and get you on the path toward recovery. Take the survey to find out if you may have an eating disorder at alsana.com/survey.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW. STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 084832-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp. com, using the file number assigned to this case 084832-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Amateurish Production of MAN OF GOD at the Geffen Playhouse
L-R: Albert Park as the Pastor in a duel with Shirley Chen as Samantha in Man of God at Geffen Playhouse. Photo by Jeff Lorch. Once in a while, you see a play that is so bad you ask yourself if you should even review it. I decided “yes,” as my readers need to be encouraged to spend their theatre dollars on another play. What’s wrong with this production, you might ask? How about everything, beginning with Anna Ouyang Moench’s poorly written, sophomoric script and unimaginative, infantile direction by Maggie Burrow,s, by the way, did a great job in “TRAYF,” also recently presented at Geffen Playhouse’s intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis stage. Unfortunately, her list of impressive credits was not reflected in this production. As a director, her job is to help the actors create a fully actualized, believable performance, which she failed to do. Most of the cast, except Erin Rae Li (Mimi), who does have theatre credits, the rest of the ensemble are primarily cinematic actors who seriously overacted in this production. Not every actor can make the leap from film to stage, and Burrows’ direction shaped performances that bordered on high school or middle school level with lots of yelling with some of the actors not getting past line readings at times. As for subtext, well, just forget about that. So, what’s the story? Four young girls who are members of a Korean Christian Girls’ Youth Group are on a religious mission in Bangkok organized by their Pastor, played by Albert Park, who definitely deserves better. Mimi, discovers a hidden camera in their bathroom and, realizing that it is their church’s property, concludes that the Pastor must be the one who planted it for his viewing pleasure. Angry and disappointed over this betrayal of their trust, the girls begin to devise a plan to punish him. They fantasize about several

different ways of killing him, one of which is a sword fight between Samantha (Shirley Chen) and the Pastor, nicely choreographed by Fight Director Thomas Isao Morinaka and enhanced by Lap Chi Chu’s candy-colored lighting design. Original music and sound design by Jonathan Snipes nicely augment the action taking place on Se Oh’s simple set design, reflecting a pretty cheap hotel room, with the girls dressed in Denitsa Bliznakova’s colorful, age-appropriate teenage costumes. Another fantasy scene takes place in a bar with the Pastor and Mimi (Erin Rae Li) seated at a table. As she leaves, she turns around and shoots him in his head. The time has come for the Pastor, who we assume is naked in the tub, to get his punishment. The girls, including Jen (Emma Galbraith) and Samantha (Kyung-Hwa), are dressed in medical uniforms, and we are to assume they have performed a radical circumcision, more than a little off the top, and have removed one kidney and are about to remove the the second one. Billed as a funny feminist play, let me assure you there is nothing funny about these proceedings nor feminist unless you think frequently dropping the “F-Bomb” from these supposed nice Christian girls, some of whom would fit into a gang, is feminism. The only laughable thing is the woefully poor direction by Burrows, whose staging frequently has the girls jumping from bed to bed, sometimes shouting or alternatively swallowing their lines. I’m reminded of that old show biz axiom when I get back to the script: “If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage.” This production reflects that trope but on steroids. Make no mistake. Sexual predators are a real and present danger to women of all ages

and deserve to be treated seriously. That said, taking a serious subject and exploring it in a comedic manner is a familiar, interesting theatrical approach. Still, it must begin with an excellent script and a director who can guide the production and elicit the best possible performances from the cast. In the case of MAN OF GOD, the attempts at comedy fell like lead balloons with only occasional snickering from the audience. I should point out that MAN

OF GOD had its World Premiere in 2019 at East West Players, the nation’s first professional Asian-American theater. In 2020, the production moved to the Geffen Playhouse but, due to COVID, closed after only nine performances. In this case, Artistic Director Matt Shakman should have let sleeping dogs lie, which is derived from Geoffrey Chaucer’s “It is nought good a slepying hound to wake.”
