Cavaliers Win!
LeBron James and Cavaliers win thrilling NBA Finals Game 7, 93-89 By Janie Mccauley OAKLAND, Calif. - LeBron James cradled the shiny gold trophy and struggled to sum up what might be his sweetest championship yet, the one he is so proudly bringing home to his native northeast Ohio just as he promised to do when he returned to the Cavaliers two summers ago.
Later, flanked by his three children on Father’s Day, a cigar between his lips and winning net as a necklace with the lingering stench of champagne, James began to understand the magnitude of his accomplishment for Cleveland after a half-century wait. “I’m coming home with what I said I was going to
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic It’s the largest short film festival in North America and its being held right here in Palm Springs. This year marks the 22nd time short films take center stage over their longer full length feature film cousins from the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) held in January every year. The short film genre is a format geared to telling its creative story in a matter of minutes. For fans of short films this is what draws them to short film festivals. To view the talent and creativity of filmmakers is the all-important fan ingredient required, and this year’s lineup of films from
54 countries is no exception. The festival will screen over 325 films from all genres and subject matter at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs, beginning Tuesday, June 21st at 6:30 pm and will run until Monday, June 27, 2016. The 87 minute Opening Night film program consists of six short films from awardwinning filmmakers that range in a screening time of between 11 to 20 minutes, and come from filmmakers in UK/Kenya, Netherlands, France, Kyrgyzstan/UK, and two films from the USA. All opening night films are award winners from the world’s top film festivals

vow to his home state and brought the Cavs back from the brink as they became the first team to rally from a 3-1 finals deficit, beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors 93-89 on Sunday night to end a 52-year major sports championship drought in Cleveland. “I’ve never seen a man in
my life tell an entire state: ‘Get on my back, I got you. Get on my back and I’m going to carry you. I don’t care if we fail, I’m going to wake up the next morning and I’m going to start working out and prepare for the next year,’” Richard Jefferson said. “... He was like, Continues on Page 7

Cooling off in cool Brittany
By Anthony Grant Flung like a defiant forearm against the Atlantic, Brittany is as near to New England literally and figuratively - as France gets. Its vast, windbitten littoral is the province of old salts and a magnet for nature lovers, and is mostly unsuited for the sorts of gentrified seaside resorts one finds up the coast in Normandy. Brittany is all cliffs and wide, deserted beaches, villages with sturdy granite houses, and fractured coasts of pink granite. There are nearly 800 meandering miles of coast. Take a TGV train from Paris to Rennes and from there rent a car. Less than an hour’s drive up route N137 puts you just outside of Jacques Cartier’s hometown of St.-Malo, a fine place to begin a tour. Near it, the 14th-century fortress Fort la Latte is the coolest castle I have ever seen, and not just be cause the 1957 swashbuckler flick “The Vikings,” starring
Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas, was filmed there. Its cylindrical keep is perched on a rocky promontory surrounded by a swirling blue-green sea, and to access it you have to cross two drawbridges. The castle has undergone medieval sieges, served as a coastal defense site under Louis XIV, and as a prison during the French Revolution. Beyond the fort is the Cape Frehel, which, with its reddish-black cliffs plunging nearly 300 feet to the luminous ocean, is one of the most spectacular stretches of the Breton coastline. The bracing air and views are best appreciated by taking a halfhour walk along the cliff top paths. Though it was too foggy for me to see it, on a clear day you can see 30 miles west to the Ile de Brehat, which I had intended as my next stop. As I made my way up route D786, the allure of the sea was too strong to resist, however,
and just beyond the village of Plouha, I made a stop at a bluff overlooking the pristine expanse of Bonaparte Beach. Though you would hardly have an inkling of it today, the beach was the site of clandestine Allied naval operations from 1942 to 1944. A plaque and
stele commemorate them. As small as it is gorgeous, Ile de Brehat is like Nantucket, the coast of Maine around Bar Harbor, and a fantasy vision of pastoral Ireland, all rolled into one. No cars are allowed on the island (there are parking lots at the port of Arcouest, from where a ferry makes regular 15-minute crossings), leaving one free to amble around the patchwork of little lanes. Everywhere are green fields and roses and hydrangeas of every hue, interrupted only by the occasional renovated medieval manor that some lucky Parisian calls a second home. Follow the signs to the Phare du Paon (Peacock Lighthouse) at the pinkgranite-covered northern tip of the island. At this site, the color of the granite changes according to the light and is at its most ethereal at twilight, which arrives around 10 p.m. in June. The lighthouse is also made of luminous soft pink granite, but it’s worth noting that the Germans blew
up the first one in 1944. I could have lingered in Brehat for a week, but then I wouldn’t have had time to stroll the Sentier des Douaniers, a pathway of ravishing beauty about 25 miles west at Ploumanac’h, the heart of Brittany’s Pink Granite Coast. Against a backdrop of deepgreen umbrella pines, smooth pink boulders in all sorts of fantastical shapes tumble down to the ocean. The coastal path takes about three hours to walk up and down. St.-Jean-du-Doigt, or St.-Jean of the Finger, is so named for the index finger of St. John the Baptist said to have found its way to the 15th-century church here. I looked everywhere for the sacred phalange but couldn’t find it, prompting me to ask a local greengrocer, who said it had been moved to a bank for temporary safekeeping. I satisfied myself with a tray of locally grown sweet strawberries - practically a religious experience in itself.

Obamas’ Yosemite Visit Prompts Call for Cultural Diversity in Parks By Desert Star Staff YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. -- President Obama, the First Lady and their daughters are visiting Yosemite National Park this weekend, and a group known as the “Next 100 Coalition” is hoping he’ll touch on the need for cultural diversity in managing the nation’s public lands. The visit comes ahead of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service this summer. Changes in Reverse Mortgage offer new tools for Retirement -Part 1
A new study by Northwestern Mutual states that two-thirds of Americans believe there is a chance they will outlive their savings, while 83% wish to remain in their home as long as possible forcing consumers to revisit reverse mortgages. Prior to 2011, reverse mortgages were expensive and really only made sense in the case of financial hardship. Due to increase in property values and a change in rules regarding reverse mortgages, your home equity should be considered as a new tool to aid in retirement issues. It’s undeniable that the

reverse mortgage industry has been plagued with a sleazy image thanks to its outdated celebrity pitchmen, aggressive sales tactics and occasional horror stories of widows being forced out of their homes. But the industry landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years. Reform of the federally insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) program has increased consumer protections, introduced underwriting to weed out unsuitable candidates and significantly lowered costs. The Reverse Mortgage Stabilization plan of 2013 now prevents reverse mortgage borrowers from using too much equity too soon and protects spouses who are too young to be co-borrowers on the loan, by ensuring they can remain in the house after the older spouse dies. However, they are not able to borrow additional money. HECM borrowing limits are based on available home equity, the age of the youngest borrower, interest rates and lender margin. Depending on their age, homeowners can tap about half of the home’s appraised value up to a maximum home value limit of $625,500. The older the borrower and the lower the interest rate, the higher the available loan amount. Distributions are tax-free and can be taken as monthly payments for a fixed period of time, as long as the borrower remains in the house, as a line
of credit or as a combination of payout options. Interest accrues monthly only on the amount borrowed, not on unused lines of credit. No repayment is required until the last borrower sells the house, moves out permanently or dies. Because it is a nonrecourse loan, the borrower or heirs can never owe more than the home is worth, even if that value is less than the loan balance. Today, the costs of implementing a reverse can be on par with a traditional home mortgage. But unlike a traditional mortgage or home equity line of credit, borrowers do not need to meet income qualifications, which can be challenging for retirees, and a reverse mortgage line of credit cannot be frozen, reduced or cancelled, as what happened in the past to many traditional mortgage borrowers during
the housing crisis. Reverse mortgages allow older homeowners to convert the equity in their primary residence into a liquid, usable resource. Borrowers must be 62 or older and must either own their home outright or use the proceeds of the reverse mortgage to pay off the balance of their existing mortgage. They retain ownership of the home and must continue to maintain it and pay their property taxes and homeowner’s insurance. There is great value for clients in opening a reverse mortgage line of credit at the earliest possible age, particularly in a low-interest-rate environment like today. Once established, the available line of credit continues to grow each year, even if the underlying value of the house does not appreciate. If the first impulse is to wait until the portfolio is
depleted before establishing a HECM line of credit, you have outdated advice. It is also important to create a spreadsheet to analyze and compare offers from various reverse mortgage lenders. Some lenders will covered all the upfront costs in exchange for a slightly higher lender margin. An Equity Line of Credit offers an immediate loan in an emergency. Next week I will explore the many ways the reverse mortgage can be utilize to save your earnings, reduce taxes, help in healthcare emergencies and pay off the mortgage. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. The Open Meeting Act is a law within a law, found within the DavisStirling Common Interest Development Act at Civil Code Sections 4900-4955. A common misconception is that common interest developments are subject to the “Brown Act” (located at Government Code Sections 54950-54963), but it only applies to the “legislative body,” meaning public or publicly controlled entities. The HOA “Brown Act” is the Open Meeting Act, which now is extensively detailed regarding association meetings. The apparent aim of the Act is valuable - to make the governance of associations more open and accessible to members. Here are a few of the more common violations of the Open Meeting Act. Discussing items not on agenda. Civil 4930 bars boards from discussing non-emergency subjects unless announced on a posted/published agenda at
least four days prior to the meeting. There are some narrow exceptions to this rule, but a frequent problem the reluctance of a board to wait until the next meeting to handle a new issue. If it truly cannot wait four days, it may be an emergency. Otherwise, hold off. Your agenda is probably already full for the meeting, and some delay gives management time to gather information and advise the board. Unknowing board meetings. Per Civil 4090, any time a quorum of the board is at the same time discussing any association topic, that is a “board meeting”, triggering the Open Meeting Act. When three of five directors happen to be at the pool, or attending a committee meeting, and any of the directors speaks, it then becomes a “board meeting” under this statute. Email deliberation. Email is so much part of our lives, that the temptation to discuss association business is almost irresistible - and often boards erroneously discuss association business in emails instead of during board
meetings - this expressly violates Civil 4910(b). It is acceptable to relay information via email, but discussing that information needs to wait until a proper board meeting. Closed Session Abuse. Closed session is for the narrow categories of items which would damage the association (or others) if they were openly discussed. The short list of permissible topics is found in Civil 4935. While it is tempting to discuss other matters in closed session, that practice abuses the trust of the community. Do everything in open session except those narrow discussions which cannot be open. Interrupting open forum. A common source of disorderly board meetings is member interjections. Oftentimes, the disruption is mutual - because the board also interrupts during member open forum. Let people have their 2 or 3 minutes. Do not interrupt or respond during their time. Respect their time, and insist they respect yours. Discussing open forum remarks. Members can discuss anything in open
forum, but not the board. Per Civil 4930(b)(c), a director can briefly answer a statement or question, refer the matter to management or a committee, or make an announcement. Failure to make draft minutes available. Under Civil 4950, draft minutes of completed meetings must be made available to members no later than 30 days afterward. If minutes go beyond the legal requirements and note comments, it can be a chore for the secretary to complete them, which often means they are late. How does your association measure up on these points?

Bridge Over Thermal Railroad Crossing Opens to Traffic Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Scheduled June 29
By Desert Star Staff THERMAL – A new overpass, built to improve traffic and safety at the intersection of Airport and Grapefruit boulevards in Thermal, is completed and was open to traffic Monday morning. Supervisor John J. Benoit and the Riverside County Transportation Department invite the public to attend the ribbon cutting, to be held at 9 a.m. June 29. The event will take place at the U.S. Post Office in Thermal, 87-200 Airport Blvd.
“The completion of this beautiful bridge is exciting for the Thermal community and visitors who will benefit from this much-needed improvement to traffic and safety,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “This project, one of the most significant transportation investments in the eastern Coachella Valley, is transformative for Thermal, an area primed to be epicenter of future development in our rapidly growing county.” The Airport Boulevard/ Grapefruit Boulevard Grade
Separation Project constructed a four-lane bridge, raising Airport Boulevard over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Grapefruit Boulevard in Thermal. Construction of the $29.5 million project began in March 2014. Diverting traffic around the railroad crossing eliminates the wait for lengthy trains to pass. It improves rail safety, mobility, air quality, and response times by emergency vehicles as well as makes the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport more accessible and
vital from a business and economic standpoint. The project was funded from $12.8 million in state Proposition 1B Trade Corridor Improvements funds, $11.9 million in local funds as the local share from the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, $4 million from county redevelopment funds and $782,000 from utility companies. The bridge incorporates aesthetic features, including Thermal community logo signs on the bridge railing and airplane silhouettes that highlight the area’s longtime association with
aviation and the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport, a vital economic development asset for the county, the community of Thermal and the eastern Coachella Valley. Supervisor John J. Benoit is the chairman of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, representing the eastern twothirds of Riverside County as the 4th District Supervisor. The 4th District stretches from Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs, south to the Salton Sea and east to Blythe and the Colorado River. Supervisor Benoit’s office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Indio Water Authority expands outdoor watering policy
By Desert Star Staff INDIO, CA – Indio Water Authority (IWA) has expanded its outdoor watering hours to before 6 a.m. and after 6 p.m., seven days a week. This is an increase from the agency’s previous Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday watering schedule. The Drought Penalty Surcharge will remain in effect to further encourage water conservation, but will only apply to residents who
exceed their water budget. The decision to ease restrictions was based on local and statewide water supply conditions, as well as the State Water Resources Control Board’s decision to change the way percentage savings requirements are calculated for water agencies throughout California. “Our residents have made great strides in a collective effort to conserve water,” said
By Desert Star Staff VENTURA, Calif. -California conservation advocates this week are traveling to Washington, D.C., to join a national push for passage of several wilderness protection bills. They are praising President Obama for declaring three new national monuments in the Southern California desert in February: Sand to Snow, Mojave Trails and Castle Mountains. Now they’d like to see Congress establish wilderness protections in the central coast area and along more of the Golden State’s shores. Jack Dyer, who cofounded Topa Topa Brewing Co. in Ventura, said local consumers and business owners value the open space because it preserves
their lifestyle, which includes biking, hiking and kayaking. “We’ve built our brand around those activities and we draw people in every day to come and enjoy a pint after they’ve done those,” he said. “People are very much outdoor enthusiasts in this region, and our business fuels off that.” Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., introduced the California Coastal National Monument Expansion Act last summer to protect more than 1,100 miles of islands, rocks and geological formations along and off the California coast, but it has not come up for a vote. Dyer said he wants members of Congress to act before they adjourn in July to stop development from encroaching on these pristine areas. “There’s been numerous
threats over the years that have come and tried to disturb the wilderness as it exists, and some of those have been successful,” he said. “We’d like to make it harder for them to be successful.” Another priority for
conservationists is the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act, which would safeguard 245,000 acres in the Los Padres National Forest and the Carrizo Plain National Monument, protect wild and scenic rivers and designate
a national recreational trail. The texts of Boxer’s bill, Senate Bill 1971, are online at congress.gov. The texts of the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act, House Resolution 4685, are at capps.house.gov.

Don’t Let These 5 Missteps Trip Up Your Plans For Retirement
By Desert Star Staff About 10,000 Americans retire each day and millions more are lined up right behind them, waiting for the day when they can finally enjoy a little relaxation after a lifetime of toil. But many of those people could be headed for retirement disaster if they don’t develop a better understanding of what their financial needs will be once their working years come to an end. “Studies show that most Americans are way behind in saving what they will need for retirement,” says Bryan Slovon, founder and CEO of Stuart Financial Group (www.Stuartfg.com). “But that’s just one of the problems. Many people also tend to misjudge the amount of expenses they might face when they retire.” Slovon says common missteps people often make when planning for retirement include: • Their retirement strategy
is sketchy or non-existent. People often stash away money for retirement without any clear strategy about how much they should be saving and what their projected expenses in retirement might be. A carefully planned strategy will help you determine what percentage of your income you should save. If you already have a strategy, Slovon suggests reviewing it every three years to make sure you’re still on track to achieve your goals. • They live beyond their means. Perhaps all that excessive spending is working out for now while you’re fully employed. But when the regular paychecks stop there could be trouble. Slovon says it’s important in retirement planning to create a budget and stick to it. • They assume they’ll always be healthy. Many people either don’t factor in healthcare costs at all or they underestimate how much those costs might be.
One study estimated that a 65-year-old married couple who retired in 2014 would need about $220,000 to pay for healthcare costs in retirement. • They don’t save enough to cover inflation. This is an easy mistake to make – but a costly one. The amount of money you’ll need in year one of retirement isn’t the same as what you’ll need in year five and year 10, even assuming that nothing about your lifestyle changes. Inflation can chip away at your retirement nest egg, causing you to come up short. • They fail to plan for the possibility of long-term care. Most people who think ahead to retirement dream about beaches, cruises, hobbies or time with the grandchildren. They don’t give much thought to the likelihood that at some point they will require longterm care, yet that’s the case according to a survey by for 70 percent of those over Genworth Financial Inc. 65. The average nursing “It can’t be stressed home costs $6,844 a month, enough how important it is to
For babies and young children, high quality sleep is crucial for development and overall health. By adopting good, safe sleep habits early, the entire family can get the rest needed to thrive. “I’ve heard it quoted that anyone who says they ‘sleep like a baby’ has never been a parent! Ask most parents and one of their top priorities is for both kids and parents to get more sleep,” says Dr. Deena Blanchard, a partner at Premier Pediatrics in NYC. However, any sleep children do get should be as safe as possible, as sleeping presents hazards just like any
other activity. With that in mind, Blanchard is offering parents great tips for helping young ones sleep soundly and safely. • At around six to eight weeks of age, infants start to develop circadian rhythms. At this point, create a consistent routine before bedtime, such as dimming lights. Your baby will start to pick up on these habits as sleep cues. • For safety, the crib should be free of bumpers, blankets, pillows, wedges and stuffed animals. • Sleep safety evolves as your child develops, so consider developmental milestones. Once your little
one rolls over, make sure that she is no longer swaddled. It’s always best to put your baby on her back to sleep, but once your baby rolls over, it’s not necessary to go into the room and flip her onto her back. Likewise, when your child starts to pull to stand, make sure the crib mattress is adjusted to the lowest level and there are no nearby items that she can pull into the crib. • Go green. Choose paint, furniture and a baby mattress for your child’s bedroom that are free of harmful chemicals. Read labels carefully. Conventional and even organic mattresses typically
Healthy Sleeping Tips for Young Children have waterproof covers that contain PVCs that children breathe in all night. However, a mattress made from fibers woven to create air pockets offers maximum breathability. For example, the Newton Wovenaire Crib Mattress, does not emit chemicals, and is a safe option that does not compromise comfort. Its breathable design prevents overheating and in an independent scientific study, the mattress demonstrated significantly lower suffocation risk as compared to other crib mattresses. More information can be found at www.newton.rest.
have a good strategy in place as you save and plan,” Slovon says. “You can’t leave financing your retirement to chance.”
• Children tend to make a mess. Keep bedding clean and avoid build-up of bacteria or mold. Wash linens regularly and seek out a washable mattress. “One of the most important things I`ve learned as a parent is that there are many things you don’t have control over,” says Dr. Blanchard. “However, creating a safe and comfortable sleep space is something you can control, and doing so can help your whole family sleep more soundly.” StatePoint

change. At the center of it all is the ability for individuals to create their own video, photo and written content that allows them to express opinions and thoughts in real-time.
It is estimated that while average millennials will take 25,000 selfies in a lifetime, they are replacing the static selfie with self-produced videos to express themselves more fully. Users are taking to multiple platforms -- including Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook Live -- to share richer details of their everyday lives through streaming video content as a way of cultivating their own personal brand to their followers. “Millennials are attracted to selfies and mobile videos as a way of sharing their opinions and voices,” says Jarret Streiner, CEO and President of Selfeo, an immersive, interactive video distribution platform that encourages users to engage with one another. “Self-produced video and picture content brings June 22, 2016
about a whole new form of expression to users.” Users are offering real-time reactions on a variety of topics from the must-watch series finale to the big game. In this election year, new trends -and controversies -- have also emerged. For example, the socalled “selfie-ballot” has become a popular way to celebrate civic engagement -- whereby voters post Election Day pictures and videos to their social media accounts; however some states are banning the practice due to general restrictions on photography in the voting booth. “Video-distribution platforms are taking on a growing relevance in the lives of individuals, because they provide an alternative platform to mainstream media. Society is dealing with the resulting
changes,” says Streiner. Brands too are getting in on the trend, using social media platforms to connect with consumers via mobile video. While only 24 percent of national brands are now using online video to market to consumers, according to Kantar Media, that percentage will likely grow. “Brands’ mobile video is taking a central role in influencing our purchasing decisions,” says Streiner. With these types of social media capabilities so readily available to consumers, and a growing number of people looking for active engagement with one another on the hot topics of the day, experts say that mobile video and selfies are here to stay StatePoint

Federal Court Backs FCC’s Treatment of Internet as Utility
A win in federal court for consumers, say advocates of net neutrality. (Greg Stotelmyer)
By Desert Star Staff WHITESBURG, Ky. – A federal court has upheld the Federal Communication Commission’s decision to treat the Internet like a utility – a victory for consumers say advocates of net neutrality. The 2-to-1 ruling came Tuesday from the U.S. Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C. Marty Newell, a member of the Rural Broadband Policy Group, says the court ruling is “part of the march” to treating broadband the same way we treat telephone service. “It’s not optional,” he stresses. “It’s not a luxury. There was a time when Internet access might have been considered a luxury, but it’s not
now. That time has passed. “It’s a necessity in the same way that we looked at the telephone once upon a time.” The cable and telecom industries and their allies argue that the FCC’s rule is overreaching and would stifle investment and customer choice. But Newell and other advocates say web users need more protections from providers. Newell says the ruling is especially important in rural areas of the country that are underserved by broadband. Take Kentucky for example, where Newell says around one out of every four households does not have
access to broadband services. “We don’t have as much choice,” he points out. “The competition is not nearly as great. “It is critical that this communications tool that it is absolutely essential to do business in the 21st century, that it be an open system.” The Rural Broadband Policy Group says of the 19 million Americans who don’t have broadband, more than 14 million live in rural parts of the country. Noting a lot of money is at stake, Newell says he knows the legal challenges will continue, something the industry giants have promised.

She told ‘Fox News Sunday’ that such an amendment would give the federal government the ability to stop a sale to somebody on the terror watch list. Its drawback, she noted, is that it doesn’t give the government the flexibility and authority it needs to protect the classified information it would use to deny a sale if potential buyers exercise their constitutional rights to an appeal.
Cornyn’s amendment also has the implied support of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Another potential gun control option may be in the pipelines. Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a moderate Republican with a history of compromise and who is not up for reelection in 2016, is working with both her fellow party members and some Democrats to write a bill that would prevent people on the federal no-fly list from purchasing guns, Fox News reported. However, she does not have the GOP’s
blessing, so it’s unclear if her bill would get a floor vote. On the House side of Capitol Hill, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) told NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ that he’s in no rush to vote on gun control. “We’re going to take a deep breath and make sure that this is done correctly, so that the policy of making sure that the authorities know, and have time to respond to if a person who was on a terrorist watch list is trying to buy a gun, that they’re notified,” Ryan said Sunday.
Senate to vote (no) on gun control measures By Desert Star Staff Just over a week after the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the Senate is set to vote on four gun control amendments. With Democrats and Republicans entrenched in their respective corners, however, none are expected to pass. All four proposals are offered as amendments to a Justice Department spending bill set to hit the Senate floor on Monday. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) sponsored an amendment that would allow the Department of Justice to deny a gun sale to anyone if the agency has a “reasonable belief” that the buyer is likely to engage in terrorism. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is offering a competing amendment, which would require that law enforcement be alerted when anyone on the terror watch list attempts to buy a gun from a licensed dealer. If anyone who has been investigated for terrorism within the last five years tries to purchase a firearm, the DoJ would be able to block a sale for up to 72 hours while prosecutors go to court to show probable cause to permanently block the transaction. The National Rifle Association has offered its support for this measure. An amendment proposed by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) tackles the issue of mental health and buying guns. His measure would clarify current language regarding mental health and make it more difficult to add mentally ill people to the background check database, which would give those people suspected of having serious mental illness a process to challenge that determination. The amendment would also boost funds for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and ensure that the correct records are uploaded into the

system in a timely manner. Finally. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) sponsored an amendment that would close the so-called “gun show loophole” by requiring every gun purchaser to undergo a background check, even during private sales or at gun shows. The measure would also expand the background check database. Even Murphy admitted that it’s highly unlikely any of the amendments would pass because they would need 60 votes to overcome a potential GOP filibuster. Instead, he focused on the public’s response to his nearly 15-hour filibuster last Wednesday and Thursday. “I admit that the background checks bill is going to be tough to get 60 votes on, but we still have hope that we can get Republicans to support the bill, stopping terrorists from getting weapons,” Murphy told ABC’s ‘This Week’. “But in the final analysis, what may be most important is that our filibuster helped galvanize an entire country around this issue.” “It wasn’t just that 40 senators came to the floor and supported my effort to get these votes but there were millions of people all across the country who rose up and who joined our effort,” he said on Sunday. Bills that would have closed the gun show loophole failed after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Connecticut and after the 2015 terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California. The NRA is opposed to requiring private sellers to be licensed, which would require them to perform background checks on any sales ‒ even if a person only ever sells one firearm. The guns rights group is also opposed to cracking down on internet gun sales, saying that it would be a violation of both the First and Second Amendments,

‘I’m going to come back home because I promised them that I would do something.’ And he carried us the whole way.” In a testy series of blowouts - and a few blowups - the winner-take-all Game 7 provided the thrilling finale with James as the finals MVP disarming two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry and his record-setting Warriors. The native of Akron rattled off moments from the lengthy list of Cleveland sports heartbreak and said what it meant for him to personally bring the Cavaliers their first championship. Playing his sixth straight finals, James almost singlehandedly carried the Cavs back into this series and finished with 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs gave their city its first major sports winner since the Browns won the NFL title in 1964. He also had three blocked shots, including a key one of Andre Iguodala on a fast break in the final minutes. An emotional James fell to the floor when this one ended with a second win in a week on Golden State’s imposing home floor, surrounded by his teammates. Only moments earlier, he went down in pain with 10.6 seconds left after being fouled by Draymond Green while going for a dunk, then came back out to make the second of two free throws. After four successful seasons in Miami and two titles with the Heat, James came back to the Cavs in hopes of winning the title this franchise and championship-starved city so coveted. It took a second try against Golden State after Cleveland lost to the Warriors in six games last year. www.desertstarweekly.com
“I was calm. I was focused. I was locked in,” James said. Cleveland did it after a coaching change, with Tyronn Lue taking over in January for the fired David Blatt. “We made history tonight,” Lue said. “Cleveland, Ohio, we’re coming back, baby!” Kyrie Irving scored 26 points to cap his brilliant finals, including a 3-pointer over Curry with 53 seconds left. Curry sat briefly on the bench to take in the scene after the Warriors made their last basket with 4:39 left. “It hurts, man,” Curry said. “Just proud of every single guy that stepped foot on the floor for our team this year. ... Hopefully we’ll have many more opportunities to fight for championships and be on this stage because this is what it’s all about.” Green had 32 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists, but the Warriors’ recordsetting season ended without the only prize this close-knit “Strength In Numbers” crew cared about from way back in the beginning - through the record 24-0 start as Coach of the Year Steve Kerr was out, Curry’s second consecutive MVP campaign, and the 73 regular-season wins to break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ mark. As Cleveland celebrated in the trophy ceremony, Green returned to the floor to congratulate the Cavs. He stopped by the winning locker room, too, and Warriors general manager Bob Myers brought in the freshly cut nets. Golden State might always be remembered as one of the best teams ever that couldn’t close it out, and Green is taking at least a good share of the blame after he sat out

E N T E RTA I N M E N T ‘Disney.Pixar: Finding Dory’--Just Keep Swimming BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
It’s been 13 years since Dory, a very forgetful little blue tang fish, joined forces with Marlon, an orange and white striped clown fish, to find his lost son Nemo. And the good news is— your favorite fish trio is back again on the big screen, but in terms of their story, only one year has gone by under the sea. As their saga begins, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) suddenly realizes she has a family besides Marlon and Nemo (vocals by Albert Brooks and Hayden Rolence respectively), and she is
determined to find her longlost mom and dad. Reluctantly, Marlon agrees to leave the safety of their reef and swim across the ocean to California’s prestigious Marine Life Institute, a rehabilitation center and aquarium, in an effort to find Dory’s mom and dad (Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy). Once they arrive in California, Dory also enlists the help of three of the most endearing residents at the rehab center— Hank (voice of Ed O’Neill from TVs “Modern Family”) a cantankerous octopus that no longer wants to return into the
ocean, Bailey, a beluga whale (voiced by Ty Burrell, also from “Modern Family” fame) and Destiny (Kaitlin Olson) a near-sighted whale shark. As Dory begins to remember more and more events from her past life, will she and her pals be able to locate her mom and dad? After all it has been a whole year since they last saw one another. One friend worries that they might no longer be alive. Faced with many obstacles, Dory is determined never to give up. She is going to keep on swimming, swimming, and
By Desert Star Staff In an age of constant communication and connectivity, it can be difficult to take a break. But drive time is when your phone should take a backseat to safety, say experts. “You don’t need to be texting to be distracted by your phone,” says Kelly Nantel, vice

as “inattention blindness,” similar to tunnel vision. While multitasking is valued in today’s culture, researchers find that the human brain doesn’t actually perform two tasks at the same time but rather switches attention between tasks. At your desk, this can be an effective and efficient way

There are many charming, playful creatures in the film, including sea lions, sea birds and loads of adorable sea otters being an otter fan myself, the sea otters practically steal the show along with Hank the octopus with only seven legs, but loads of heart (three hearts, in fact). Bet you didn’t know that, but somehow Dory did. She may be forgetful, but she’s definitely not dumb... “Finding Dory” is rated PG for mild thematic elements. There are some scenes of jeopardy throughout which might be a little scary for the very young, but older kids from eight years old and up will find the adventures exciting and fun. .

You are in for a very special treat if you see “Finding Dory” at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Before the film begins there is a stage show presented by “The Bubble Guy” who forms big and small bubbles on stage in a “bubble extravaganza.” He also uses little tykes from the audience during his show...The day we saw his performance, he momentarily captured a little

Upstairs there is an aquarium filled with lovely colorful fish. Next to this aquarium, there is a plaque to help you identify each fish and there is also a representative from the Aquarium of the Pacific to answer any questions you or the kids might have...Also upstairs in the lobby area, there is a large blue replica of Dory. So be sure to bring a camera or phone so you can take photographs. Downstairs there’s an additional display from the Aquarium of the Pacific featuring many brightlycolored fish, including one jaunty little guy who even had blue fangs. to work, but behind the wheel, “multitasking” can be deadly. From checking GPS, to firing up a drive time playlist, there are countless smartphonerelated reasons why people take their mind off the road. And newer in-vehicle systems allow drivers to call, text, email, update social media and browse the Internet, despite research showing these systems cause distraction that can linger after the driver finishes the task. One of the major reasons drivers today are so distracted is one of the most surprising -- pressure from your family. Indeed 82 percent of Americans feels their family pressures them the most -- above friends or employers -- to drive distracted, according to a recent NSC survey. “It is a sad irony that the people we love are actually jeopardizing our safety the most,” says Nantel. “If you really care, don’t call to say, ‘I love you,’ instead encourage your family to set everything else aside, disconnect and focus only on the road.” To prioritize safety and reduce your risk of being involved in a crash, turn your commute into “me time,” and your car into a safe sanctuary. The National Safety
Council is offering some tips to take back your drive. • Turn off your phone when you get in the car. • Tell your family (and anyone else expecting to hear from you) that you will be driving and will call or text them when you are parked at your destination. • Send emails and texts before you start driving. • Return the favor. When friends, family or colleagues are driving, refrain from placing distracting calls or sending texts. Driver distractions have joined alcohol and speeding as leading factors in fatal and serious injury crashes. In recent years, thousands of people have died in crashes when drivers used cell phones. The issue has started capturing the attention of political leaders nationwide and some are taking action to improve laws that promote safe driving, though no law goes far enough, say safety experts, because no law prohibits hands-free use. To learn more about the dangers of distracted driving and efforts to end this public health crisis, visit distracteddriving.nsc.org. Driving contains enough risk. So put the phone away and encourage those you love to do the same. StatePoint

MUSIC Musical riches showcased on four new titles BY ROBERT KINSLER
Two essential live albums and several releases from retro-minded up-and-comers are among the field of highlyrecommended titles that will satisfy music lovers from across the spectrum.
Artist: Neil Young + Promise of the Real Title: Earth (Reprise) You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young and Crazy Horse Tell me more: Neil Young is truly rock’s most enduring explorer, challenging himself and his audience with songs bolstered by socially-minded lyrics and expansive rock that incorporates folk, alt-country, blues and other styles. On his latest album “Earth,” Young + Promise of the Real (a group headed by Lucas Nelson and Micah Nelson, Willie Nelson’s sons) utilize 2015 concert recordings and studio overdubs adorned with sounds both
tranquil and jarring (mostly animal cries, but also sonics captured in the city) that add up to something that is never less than captivating. The 13-track recording fills two CDs, and includes an ambitious 26-minute take on “Love and Only Love.” Other standouts include the beautiful harmonica- and organ-anchored “Mother Earth,” melodic country rocker “My Country Home,” and lush “Western Hero.” Information: NeilYoung.com.
Artist: Asia Title: British Live Performance Series (Rainman) You might like if you enjoy: Yes, John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes Tell me more: Recorded at Central Television Nottingham studios in 1990, Asia’s “British Live Performance Series”
concert release is a wonder. Capturing the supergroup as they performed highlights from their first decade together, the 13-track set includes virtuoso prog-rock (“Wildest Dreams,” “Time Again”), tuneful anthems (“Voice of America,” “Days Like These”) and energetic takes on their biggest hits (“Sole Survivor,” “Don’t Cry,” “Only Time Will Tell,” “Heat of the Moment”). “British Live Performance Series” is a must-have for fans of Asia. Information: rainmanrecords.com. Artist: Charlie Faye & the Fayettes Title: Charlie Faye & the Fayettes (independent) You might like if you enjoy: She & Him, the Shirelles, the Ronettes Tell me more: Some of today’s most exciting artists are those who have tapped
into a retro vein and made it their own. Indeed, She & Him, Gary Clark Jr. and St. Paul & the Broken Bones are among the ‘00s breakout acts who have artistically balanced old and new. Now comes Austin’s Charlie Faye & the Fayettes (Faye is lead vocalist, and is joined by backup singers BettySoo and Akina Adderley). The glorious “Green Light,” haunting “Loving Names,” Burt Bacharach-styled “Carelessly,” and rock ‘n’ soul romp “Eastside” are among this writer’s faves. Information: charliefayeandthefayettes.com.
Artist: The Record Company Title: Give It Back to You (Concord Music Group) You might like if you enjoy: Moreland & Arbuckle, 7Horse Tell me more: Los Angeles-based trio The Record Company has been
doing for blues-rock what Vintage Trouble has done for rock ‘n soul. The Record Company (singer-guitaristharmonica player Chris Vos, bassist-vocalist Alex Stiff and drummer-vocalist-piano player Marc Cazorla) have released a debut, “Give It Back to You,” that not only harkens back to some of the group’s influences (John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, the Rolling Stones), but equally establishes the threesome as a contemporary and fully contemporary voice. The performances are energetic and the songs are explosive. The blistering “Off the Ground,” heavy bassfilled hypnotic rocker “On the Move” and gospel-infused “Hard Day Coming Down” are undeniably catchy, and everywhere the sparse but intoxicating arrangements are a delight. Why Neglecting Your Personal Brand Can Torpedo Your Career
By Desert Star Staff AT&T understands the importance of promoting its brand. So do Toyota, Disney and McDonald’s, just to name a few. But individuals often don’t understand just how critical it is for them to promote their personal brands as well. In fact, their careers depend on it. “No one from the CEO to the secretary can afford not have a strong personal brand (online and off), if they want to succeed in today’s job climate,” says Karen Tiber Leland, a branding expert and author of “The Brand Mapping Strategy: Design, Build and Accelerate Your Brand” (www.karenleland.com). Leland points out that personal branding is not a new idea. She notes the article that Tom Peters wrote in 1997 titled “The Brand Called You” which helped give rise to the popular

idea that an individual can be just as much a brand, as a soft drink or laundry detergent. She also points out that people such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin were carefully nurturing their brand images decades and even centuries before it became fashionable. “Even though personal branding has been with us for decades,” says Leland, “the advent of social media as a daily part of all our lives, has brought it to the forefront and made it a priority in today’s wired world.” Leland says there are several reasons why it’s important for everyone to follow Churchill and Chaplin’s lead and cultivate a personal brand.
A few of those reasons include: • You need to outshine the competition. The job market is a competitive place and it’s easy to get lost in the clutter of all those other applicants. You can stand out from the crowd by carefully crafting your brand with elements that can range from the way you dress to the way you tell the story about the accomplishments you have achieved. • Social media is forcing your hand. “It’s critical to make sure your online presence (including Facebook, LinkedIn etc.) represents you in the most powerful and professional way,” says Leland. Why? Because potential employers will check them out to check you out. According to a 2015 June 22, 2016
CareerBuilder poll, 52 percent of employers use social networking sites to research job candidates. And not having social media accounts isn’t a good option because 35 percent of those employers say they are less likely to interview someone who doesn’t have an online presence. • A negative image could undermine your career goals. While social media sites can help promote your personal brand, Leland says, they can also be your worst enemy. That same CareerBuilder study reported that 48 percent of employers chose not to hire someone based on social-media content. So ditch inappropriate photos, references to drinking, critical
comments about former employers and anything else you wouldn’t want a prospective employer to see. “Anyone who plans to wait out the personal-branding trend until it passes needs a new plan,” Leland says. ““It’s no longer an option in career management. If you don’t define your personal brand, someone else will define it for you.” About Karen Tiber Leland: Karen Tiber Leland is a branding expert and author of “The Brand Mapping Strategy: Design, Build and Accelerate Your Brand” (www.karenleland.com).

Manage Mosquitoes While Enjoying the Great Outdoors By Melinda Myers Don’t let disease-carrying mosquitoes keep you indoors this summer. Instead, employ these eight tips to protect yourself and manage these pests in your yard. Do a bit of yard and garden clean up. Remove weeds, manage neglected gardens and keep the lawn properly mowed to reduce resting spaces for adult mosquitoes. Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed. Drain water that collects in buckets, kids toys, tarps, pool covers, clogged gutters

and downspouts. Clear the gutters and downspouts so water can drain freely. Store items that tend to collect water in a shed or garage. Evaluate drainage patterns in your landscape. Improve drainage by amending the soil with organic matter. Install French drains; drain tiles and other drainage systems if needed. Or turn it into a water feature. Consult your municipality first for any relevant guidelines and restrictions. Manage water in birdbaths, fountains, ponds and rain barrels. Change
water weekly in birdbaths and wading pools. Add a pump to keep water moving and prevent breeding. Or use an organic mosquito control like Mosquito Dunks and Bits (SummitResponsibleSolutions. com) in rain barrels and water features. The Mosquito Bits quickly knock down the mosquito larval population, while the Mosquito Dunks provide 30 days of control. They are both safe for pets, fish, wildlife and children. Add a fan to your outdoor décor. The gentle breeze keeps these weak flying insects June 22, 2016
away. Consider taking one to the garden when weeding. Provide short-term relief when entertaining outdoors with the help of citronella oil or scented candles. Scatter lots of these throughout the area and within a few feet of your guests. Cover as much of your skin as possible with loose fitting, light colored clothing. Mosquitoes are less attracted to the lighter colors and can’t readily reach your skin through loose clothing. Further, protect yourself from disease-carrying mosquitoes by using a personal
repellent. For those looking to avoid DEET, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has also approved products with the active ingredient picaridin, IR3535, and the synthetic oil of lemon and eucalyptus. Avoid products that contain both sunscreen and insect repellents, as you need to apply the sunscreen more often than the repellent. Implement some of these strategies and then get ready to enjoy the outdoors mosquito-free all season long. Myers’ website is www. melindamyers.com.

US Supreme Court turns down challenge to assault weapons ban in 2 states
By Desert Star Staff The US Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to laws in two states that restrict ownership of semiautomatic firearms. On Monday, justices rejected an appeal of an October decision by the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld laws in Connecticut and New York that prohibit civilians from owning certain semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines. The laws bar access to the same gun used by Omar Mateen, the man who killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a terrorist attack on an Orlando nightclub last week. A federal ban enacted in 1994 had similar prohibitions on certain semi-automatic firearms and magazines that
were defined as high-capacity, but that law expired in 2004. The bans in Connecticut and New York were enacted in response to the Sandy Hook massacre, where a shooter with a semi-automatic rifle killed 20 children and six teachers at an elementary school in 2012. Five other states and Washington, DC also have bans on semi-automatic rifles. The two states’ gun laws were originally challenged in two cases from gun rights organizations and individual gun owners. The appeals courts consolidated the cases into one and upheld the law. The Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that individuals have a right to possess guns in their home for self-defense, but has since refused to strike down state and local laws that
enact restrictions on activities. Those restrictions include requiring guns to be locked or disabled when not in use, banning ownership for those under age 21, and bans on carrying firearms in public.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Pet Happy and Healthy

I’ve been crying a lot lately, looking to the past at old pictures and wishing so hard that I could go back. Life is no longer the fun it used to be. You see; I am a very creative person. My favorite things to do are. Play theatre games, make plays and film them, have karaoke nights and pretend I am a performer at a concert, etc.. I used to do that kind of stuff all the time with my sisters and cousins. I had the time of my life! But now, everyone’s moved on. I go to my cousin’s house now and all she does is. Watch TV. I never have really hung out with people from school because as a kid, I’ve always been with my family. It’s what I’m used to. I want to hang out with kids my age, but no one likes to do the kinds of things I like to do. Only my 12-year-old sister still does. I look forward to her coming over all week so we can do stuff together. But when my sister’s not over I just sit there at home depressed. I want this summer to be different, and I don’t want to just sit at home but I just wish with people my age liked to do the things I like to do. It’s the only time I am truly myself and happy. begins to open up and present you with a multitude of exciting options. It’s so wonderful to hear about your interests and your creativity. Good for you. These gifts are a blessing, and they will reward and enrich your life immeasurably. As a little kid, you were fortunate to have close family members who shared your sense of creative adventure. Together you had the freedom to dream and explore your imaginations. Very soon you will unlock the freedom to join clubs and activities full of people very much like you. There are plenty of kids who STILL share your passions. It’s just that they are a bit spread out, and you will find them when they too join performing arts activities at your school or within your community. Rather than wasting energy wishing that people would change, spend it instead of finding the people who love what you love. This can be a fantastic summer! RIGHT NOW, with your parents, Google the words “theater” “film” “youth” and the name of your town. See what is out there for you to join. Very often the YMCA or the Boys & Girls Club or Girls Inc. will have summer programs for teens that involve music, film, theater and all of the performing arts. Whenever you feel like you have reached the end of one road, that’s your cue to look around for turns and corners. Where else are you supposed to be? Where else would you feel truly yourself and happy? Go there! Friends are fantastic, but you do not need them to be creative. Use your alone time to learn or improve your talents. Make your own movie this summer! Start today.

Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it is illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. Toll free numbers may or may not reach Canada. California law requires that contractors taking jobs that total $500 or more (labor and/ or materials) must be licensed by the Contractors State License Board. State law also requires that contractors include their license number on all advertising. You can check the status of your licensed contractor at www.cslb. ca.gov or 800-321-CSLB

How inmates practice advocacy journalism from inside prison
By Desert Star Staff When a transgender prison inmate hanged herself last year, her story of being denied medical and psychological care was told by a journalist already situated close to the scene – another inmate. Christopher Zoukis, serving time at the medium-security Federal Correctional Institution Petersburg in Virginia, is one of several inmates throughout the country who contribute to Prison Legal News, an independent monthly magazine that focuses on prisoner rights, court rules and other news about the criminal justice system. “In most areas of public debate, there are two sides to every story, yet when it comes to prisons, too often the only voices heard are those of government and law enforcement, along with the victims,” says Zoukis (www. ChristopherZoukis.com), a prison-education advocate who has authored two books – “College for Convicts: The Case for Higher Education in American Prisons” and “Prison Education Guide.” “The total exclusion of prisoners results in badly
slanted stories that don’t give a full picture.” One of Prison Legal News’ roles is to be an advocate for inmate rights. But the publication is first and foremost a serious news outlet, he says, and inmates are a significant part of its core readership. “Prisoners are starved for information relevant to their existence,” Zoukis says. “Prison Legal News fills a void.” An inmate named Paul Wright, who was serving a sentence on a first-degree murder charge in Washington State, founded prison Legal News in 1990. In 1987, Wright tried to rob a cocaine dealer, but the dealer pulled a gun. Wright shot and killed the man. He was unsuccessful in pleading self-defense. Wright was released in 2003. By then Prison Legal News had been around 13 years and he continued the work, using the magazine as an advocacy tool for improving the prison system. Wright also heads the Human Rights Defense Center, a nonprofit that advocates for the human rights of people behind bars. About 65 percent of Prison Legal News, subscribers are
state and federal prisoners, but readers also include attorneys, journalists, government officials, academics, family members of prisoners, and university and law school libraries. Zoukis says incarcerated writers face challenges that the average newspaper or magazine reporter doesn’t. “Prison officials are often unsympathetic to prison journalists,” he says. “They tend to subject us to enhanced scrutiny and retaliation.” Securing source materials and doing research also presents problems. Zoukis says everything must be mailed into the prison or emailed through a monitored email system that permits limited quantities of text. He can’t submit a finished article directly to the publication. Instead, he emails the article to an outside contact, who submits it on his behalf. “Despite the official censorship and the limitations, I find that there is a great duty,” Zoukis says. “There is an obligation to continue even when the going is tough and the world appears to be crumbling down. It’s this sense of purpose that drives
prison journalists on.” About Christopher Zoukis: Christopher Zoukis, author of “College for Convicts: The Case for Higher Education in American Prisons” (McFarland & Co., 2014) and “Prison Education Guide” (Prison Legal News Publishing, 2016), is a leading expert in the field of correctional education.
He is founder of www. PrisonEducation.com and www.PrisonLawBlog.com, and a contributing writer to The Huffington Post, the New York Daily News and Prison Legal News. He is incarcerated at the medium-security Federal Correctional Institution Petersburg in Virginia.
Fried Eggs on the sidewalk and baked cookies in cars
By Stephen A. Cooper, Esq. /OP-Ed In Arizona this past weekend -- where temperatures muscled their way to 120 degrees -- folks were frying eggs on the sidewalk and baking chocolate chip cookies in cars giving new meaning to the term “outdoor kitchen.” Today where I live in Woodland Hills, California, in the San Fernando Valley – a neighborhood my disapproving realtor informed me was nicknamed “Woodland Hell” because of the heat – the mercury topped out at 113; unlike in Arizona, where my house is you can only get your street-cooked eggs overeasy and the cookies, while warm, just aren’t as chewy. What I am 100 percent
sure of (though I’m tempted to hyperbolize and call it 113 percent) is: It’s hot. While I don’t expect my global warming denying friends to agree with either me or the Boston Globe’s Bill McKibben (“The mercury doesn’t lie: We’ve hit a troubling climate change milestone,” March 5, 2016), I hope we can all acknowledge that when it’s 113 degrees and the “dog days of summer” lie far, far ahead, it’s worrisome to think just how hot it’ll get, isn’t it? Speaking of dogs, my wife and I have three and they’re hot. They’re so hot they’re not even being mischievous inside where -- having heard how dangerous this apocalyptic heat
can be for humans and animals alike -- we brought them from their usual backyard terrain. We’re blessed to have air conditioning as long as the power grid holds but last month when we got our electricity bill, we were even hotter under the collar than we are now. I’m thinking it may be a good time to eat a cool refreshing Klondike Bar. True, I enjoy ice cream when it’s not nearly this hot -- like when the mercury is just a measly 100 degrees -- but its even tastier knowing I can burn those wasted calories just by stepping outside into what you might call my “outdoor sauna.” There I can bask like one of the big lizards I’ve seen creeping around lately.
Is Your Water Safe to Drink?
By Desert Star Staff Although many Americans are aware of the water crises taking place in different parts of the country, such as Flint, Michigan and New Jersey, most believe themselves to be far removed from these situations. Experts caution however, that what’s happening there could
happen anywhere, anytime to whole neighborhoods, individual streets or even just to a specific house. Indeed, plumbing components still could legally contain up to eight percent lead as recently as January 2014. The good news is there are steps you can take to protect your family.
“The most important thing individual families can do to improve water quality is to filter it at home,” says Joseph Harrison, former chief of the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Branch. Harrison says there are filters that require installation, but the easiest option is to purchase a filtering system available at a local retailer that you fill with water and put in your fridge. Such systems come in various shapes and sizes, making them a good option for any size family or fridge. For example, ZeroWater offers the only portable gravity-fed pour through filtration device that reduces the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) measurement down to virtually zero and are certified by the NSF for lead reduction and other heavy metals to a safe level. By removing 99.6 percent of all total dissolved solids, the filters get a 000 measurement on the digital water meter, which is equivalent to purified bottled water. They also
Query: Has anyone noticed that this otherworldly heat is making the reptiles bigger and meaner lately? Is anyone looking into this phenomenon? Because I saw Jurassic Park, and while entertaining, it wouldn’t be if it were real. At least I’ve got my dogs to protect me. Just one problem though: The heat. It’s made them lethargic. Plus, although my dogs love me fine, I’m afraid I have to admit that if pressed between choosing to save me from a lizard attack and all the aromatic cookies and eggs now simmering on the ground outside, truly my goose is cooked.

This is because lead toxin exposure primarily affects developing brains and causes reduced intelligence, learning disabilities, developmental delays and fetal deaths. To learn more about water filtration and how to test your water for lead, visit ZeroWater.com. You don’t have to accept your local water quality as-is. By filtering your water, you can improve both its quality and its taste. StatePoint

Ayad Akhtar’ Powerful/Funny/Angry Play On Social Discourse
By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic One can get away with a lot when the weapon of biting social discourse is comedy. Remember, ‘God of Carnage’? Yazmina Reza’s four seemingly-intelligent adults meet to sort out a schoolyard incident involving their young sons, only to have the meeting explode into hand-hand combat when a casual remark sets off a firestorm of recriminations. In playwright Ayad Akhtar’s blistering comedy, “Disgraced” the playwright explores the dark underbelly of the politically correct subject matter of antisemitism and Islamophobia that is simmering just beneath the surface at first only to boil over later on, dragging its five characters into open verbal warfare. “Disgraced”, directed by journeywoman (see; politically correct) director Kimberly Senior, first premiered in 2011 in Chicago, then transferred to New York’s Lincoln Center, then onto Broadway capturing a Pulitzer Prize for Akhtar and a Tony nomination for director Senior in the process. The play written in 2012 is eerily prescient for events unfolding in 2016. The action is set in New York City during 2011 and 2012 takes place over a nine month period. Pakistani-American lawyer Amir (Hari Dhillon) at the urging of his American painter wife Emily (Emily Swallow) reluctantly agrees to offer ‘assistance’ to a local Imam who has run afoul of the law for comments he made about the “9/11” attacks. Emily has come to know the Imam while gathering research into
Islamic art for a series of her paintings she will be showing at a fashionable art gallery. At a hosted dinner party for friends Issac (J. Anthony Crane) a curator friend of Emily and Amir - has more than a business interest in Emily - and his wife Jory (Karen Pittman) who works at the same law firm as Amir settle in for an evening of cocktails, pleasantries and a delicious dinner prepared by Emily. After consuming too much alcohol the conversation turns to office business talk and then to the hot button issues of the day: politics, religion, and whatever other alcohol-fueled deep feelings held by all, begin to surface during the inevitable moments of truth. Amir, a self-proclaimed apostate from Islam makes a case for secularism saying” The Koran is like one long hate-mail letter to humanity”. Which prompts Isaac to calm the waters with a sincere assessment saying “Islam is rich and universal (as viewed through his curator lenses), part of a spiritual heritage we can all draw from.” Amir then admits “… to having felt some pride on September 11th.” Which produces gasps from the audience. Now the stage is set for the infidelity slings and arrows when Amir and Jory returning from an errand, find Isaac and Emily in a close encounter. The play may be full of predictable clichés and the direction of the story, but no one can deny the talent and solid performances of the actors working on the stage. Sometimes the situations get overcooked with everyone yelling. But, after all there are a lot of truths being hurled all about, with each character making a

Abe Jensen played by Behzad Dabu, is an angry young man. Abe is Amir’s nephew who in an effort to assimilate, changes his name from Muslim to Anglo. Further frustration and disappointments prompt him, however, to change it back again at the end of the play. He gets to summarize, at least for me, the driving ideology and role Islam plays in the overall scheme of things
on this planet. The ending of the play is deliberately left ambiguous, however, I felt an uneasy, gnawing feeling that there is more in store for the characters and for a secular society as we know it. Binder, and Sound design by Jill BC Du Boff. The Fight Direction choreographed by Unkledave’s Fight House, is one of the best fight design efforts is so authentically executed, I had some concern for Ms. Swallow’s safety. But, of course, I shouldn’t have worried. “Disgraced” is a powerful play that delivers a potent message, yet is funny and enjoyable at the same time. It is performed without an intermission at the Mark Taper Forum through July 17, 2016.
