Southwest Announces Nonstop Flights from PSP to San Jose

By Desert Star Staff Palm Springs, California – Southwest Airlines continues to grow at Palm Springs International Airport and has announced yet another nonstop route, adding daily year-round service to San Jose from Palm Springs.

Southwest’s new San Jose service starts on Sunday, November 6, 2022, and will operate once daily on one of their 737 family aircraft. With this new route, Southwest offers nonstop service to nine airports from Palm Springs.

Six routes, including San Jose, operate on a year-round basis, and three operate on a seasonal basis.

“Our new daily service to San Jose brings a third northern California airport with nonstop service for our Palm Springs Customers,” said Adam Decaire, Vice President of Network Planning, Southwest Airlines. “This new link connects the Peninsula and Coachella Valley with the time savings, value, and Hospitality that only the People of Southwest can deliver and underscores the kind of investment in California air travel that’s made Southwest the largest carrier within the Golden State for two decades and counting on.”

The band has released 36 albums since its formation in 1989, including several that reached gold or double-gold status.

Originally known as “Banda Cuisillos Musical de Arturo Macías,” the group’s style has evolved considerably over the last 30 years—moving from Colombia-infused “cumbias” to more romantic ballads. Unlike most brass bands, they incorporate a piano and electric guitar into their music.

in the day, folks in Europe would pay a fortune for it.

And maybe the Dutch traders were the first to say, “The spice must flow.”

They also traded textiles, gems, you name it!

The Dutch did much of this trading with the Portuguese and wanted to cut out the middleman. At the same time, Holland was struggling against oppressive Spanish rule, So how do you pay for a war? Capitalism!

The Dutch came with this great idea — the Dutch East India Company, abbreviated in their own language as VOC. Public stock trading began shortly afterward, and it became the first multinational corporation.

The VOC was vital to financing Holland’s fight against Spain. And its stock was so popular that the Dutch built a place where people could come and trade stock at regular hours and not just by appointment. This is how stock markets began. The Dutch were financial pioneers.

They also created public bond floats, stock options and more. And all this was based on the commodities trade.

Anywhere the Dutch merchants sailed, towns sprang up, financial systems started, mines began, and jobs were created. So, naturally, this made the Dutch very popular.

The stock market became even more popular because it

allowed investors to share risk and return. Anyone could buy a small share of the cargoes sailing between the spice islands and Europe. Profits were shared, and losses were manageable. This turned into the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (AMX), which is now part of Euronext. I got to visit the bull in front of the AMX during my visit years ago.

The Dutch have a bull in front of their stock exchange, just like the one down the street from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). That bull is The Charging Bull and was initially placed there in secret, in 1989, by Italian-American artist Arturo Di Modica. This was when the world was reeling from the 1987 Black Monday stock market collapse, and being a creative artist, Di Modica wanted to give the world Hope after such a financial disaster. I think it worked.

Di Modica did the same outside the AMX in 2012 amid Europe’s financial crisis.

It did, pr hope. It did provide hope. People rub the bull’s horns for luck so often that they’ve changed color! Funny correlation, right? Well, it makes perfect sense ...

The Dutch founded New York, calling it New Amsterdam, but that changed when English settlers took over.

But first, in the 1600s, Dutch settlers erected a wall on the southern tip of Manhattan Island to keep the British out.

It did not work, and the wall was never used for defense.

But it gave its name to a street in Manhattan: Wall Street.

And that’s where colonists gathered to trade stocks and commodities. So, the Dutch helped give us Wall Street, too!

The Dutch gained a reputation for many things ... financial acumen was a big one, but they’re also known for tolerance and welcoming refugees. Over the years, this has taken Amsterdam’s already busy economic activity and kicked it into overdrive and a new Fronteer.

Record numbers of foreign businesses open offices in the Netherlands, too. That’s why the Netherlands is ranked 69th in the world in terms of population but 17th in economic size.

All this from a place that was basically reclaimed swampland several hundred years ago.

The Dutch are also known for sharing wealth and looking after the less fortunate. In other words, they’re capitalists, but they’re not jerks about it. A robust social safety net allows people to start new businesses more readily. And indeed, Holland leads Europe in new business starts.

So, what can we learn from the Netherlands and its first-of-its-kind stock market?

1. Financial innovation is good. Before the Dutch did, no one had imagined a stock market with regular hours and open-to-all access. It

also helped them fund their major problem of the day: paying for war against Spain.

2. Tolerance and openness help capital grow. Amsterdam is a great place to do business, and foreigners are welcome. That sure kicks an economy into a higher gear.

3. Share the wealth, share the risk. The Dutch make sure to spread the wealth around. Taxes are higher than in the U.S., but services are top-notch. And the safety net gives budding entrepreneurs the confidence to start new businesses.

It’s appearing more and more likely that the historic bull market we’ve all enjoyed for over a decade is out of steam.

Meanwhile, we have a threshold from a world of stability to a world on the brink of chaos.

The biggest threat could be to your wealth. This could also be a time of growing your wealth or a time of loss. It is a time to be tax-efficient and budget efficient, so one can invest a portion of their portfolio in working for their prosperity.

Can our management company ban installation of solar because of that reason or do the new regulations override that argument?

Thank you. D.D., Cypress Dear D.D.: Civil Code Sections 714 and 714.1 do not provide for HOAs to ban solar installations because they allegedly void roof warranties.

However, keep in mind that the HOA can hold you responsible for damage to the roof. So, the HOA cannot reject your solar installation request because of the roof warranty, but it may hold you responsible for damage to the roof. Also, management doesn’t make decisions, they carry out board decisions. Best regards, Kelly.

My HOA requires installation of pigeon deterrents or critter guards, at a cost of well over $1,000 extra. We think that ”pigeon deterrent” should be at owner’s option and cost and the HOA shouldn’t make it compulsory for approval.

Please advise when the installation of pigeon deterrent becomes a condition for solar installation. What kind of procedure does the HOA follow to set it as a condition for solar installation? J.M., San Jose Dear J.M.: Per Civil Code Section 714(d)(1)(B), an association cannot impose a requirement which adds more than $1,000 cost to the system.

However, the HOA can hold you responsible for damage to the roof if the installation allows pigeons or other animals to damage the roof, per Civil Code Section 714.1(a)(4). Even though the HOA cannot force you to have the guards, if it prevents damage to the roof

the area over their home as their “fair share” of the common area roofs, it is more likely that the HOA will be forced to allow solar installations on townhouses. Behavioral Health Tips for Older Adults

By Desert Star Staff According to experts, older adults experience behavioral health issues such as anxiety or depression. They May be embarrassed and think they need to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps,” but helping them seek help can empower them to live their best lives.

“Everyone is different, but there are tools for better health, including therapy, medication and self-care,” said Dr. Lindsay Evans-Mitchell, medical director for behavioral health for Cigna Medicare Advantage.

Behavioral health disorders affect one in five adults over 55. Older men have the highest suicide rate of any age group or gender. Among men 75 and older, the suicide rate is 40.2 per 100,000 – almost triple the overall rate.

The most common behavioral health disorder in older adults is dementia, and its incidence is growing as the Baby Boomer generation ages.

Experts project that more than 9 million Americans 65 years or older will have dementia by 2030. Anxiety disorders and mood disorders are also common among older people.

Dealing with a behavioral health issue? These selfcare tips can help: 1. Find a Provider.

“Cognitive disorders, such as

dementia and mood disorders, often look the same,” Dr. Evans-Mitchell said. “Only a trained professional can make an accurate diagnosis.”

For help finding a provider, reach out to your primary care physician or health plans, such as Medicare or Medicare Advantage. Also, consider virtual therapy. It’s easy to schedule and offers the convenience of seeing a therapist without leaving home.

2. Nurture Yourself. Good nutrition feeds the body and mind. If you have questions about food for older adults, consult your physician or a registered dietitian. Additionally, drink water throughout the day. “Dehydration can worsen cognitive issues,” Dr. Evans-Mitchell said.

3. Sleep Well. Like all adults, older people need nightly seven to nine hours of sleep. The feds are getting ready to hold a lease auction in August or September for sites off Morro Bay to build floating wind turbines.

Andy Pease, a member of the San Luis Obispo city council, said the potential for offshore wind on the Central Coast and Humboldt County is huge; enough to power 1.6 million homes.

“There’s no reason to be having new gas extraction permits or any fossil fuels,” Pease contended. “We need to leave those in the ground.

We’ve got the capability.

Let’s make it happen.”

Newsom has already pledged to cease all fracking permits by 2024. Groups fighting climate change would like him to take the next step and block any oil drilling expansion. Opponents want oil and gas to remain part of the energy mix and say jobs in the field are at risk.

Local LA Women Win Grants from Grape-Nuts to Climb Everest

By Desert Star Staff Local LA women Meghan Buchanan and Sara Safari were chosen as two of nine incredible pioneering women to receive a $12,500 grant each from Grape-Nuts cereal to use toward their dreams of climbing Mount Everest.

Meghan is an aerospace engineer and motivational speaker. She has been overcoming adversity from a young age when she was

diagnosed with dyslexia.

Meghan later suffered a lifethreatening snowboarding injury that broke her femur and made doctors think Buchanan may never walk without a cane. However, she has since climbed Kilimanjaro.

Sara is the founder of Climb Your Everest, nonprofit supporting marginalized women through leadership programs.

She first attempted Everest in 2015 but was forced to

turn back after an earthquake made conditions on the mountain too dangerous.

Both women are working toward completing the Explorer’s Grand Slam— climbing the Seven Summits and skiing to the last degrees of the North and South Poles—

and just returned from their climbs of Mount Everest.

From Crafton to Harvard: One student’s journey to the Ivy League

By Desert Star Staff Crafton Hills College (CHC) transfer student José Aaron Rosales is packing his bags and heading to Harvard University in the fall.

The Rialto resident received the news via email on March 31 while having dinner with family at a Texas Roadhouse.

“It was such a hard week after burying my grandmother, and here I am bawling,” the 33-year-old recalled after opening his acceptance letter on his cell phone. “I turned the phone to my wife and showed her what it said. She gave me a big hug. So few people knew I applied because it was not a guarantee I’d get in.”

Rosales is a firstgeneration college student, and he credits the height of the COVID-19 pandemic for changing the trajectory of his life. Rosales said the pandemic was “an eye-opener.”

“I was limited in what I could do to help without a

medical background,” he said.

“So, my wife and I talked about me going back to school.”

Rosales connected with two nonprofits dedicated to providing military veterans like him with an accelerated, clear path to college. He decided on CHC after hearing about their high transfer rate.

“Lisa Mills, a counselor at the Veterans Resource Center, picked up the phone on the first ring, and that’s how my journey at Crafton started,” Rosales said.

Rosales quickly immersed himself in classes focused on his major, Physics, taking as many courses as possible. He knew his next steps would be transferring to a four-year university.

Rosales connected with CHC’s Veterans Resource and Transfer Center and the nonprofit Service To School for help. School service is dedicated to supporting service members and veterans looking to accomplish their

next leadership chapter by helping them gain admission to the best college or graduate school possible.

Rosales said both resources worked with him to prepare application requirements for consideration. As a result, 954 applicants were accepted into Harvard, and Rosales was one of only 18 veterans.

Rosales is preparing to move back east to attend the university with his wife, Christina, and eight-yearold daughter Audreyana. He expects to graduate with the Harvard Class of 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in Physics. After graduation, Rosales plans to attend medical school and give back to the veteran community.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my family, the nonprofits I worked with, and Crafton,” Rosales said.

“It was a team effort.”

SB Symphony Concert Under the Stars with Fireworks July 2

Expert Advice for Families Exploring Plant-Based Options A

growing number of families are interested in plant-based choices for themselves and their children. For parents, that means introducing foods thoughtfully to ensure kids are getting maximum nutrition, including plant-based protein.

Today’s plant-based eaters span a wide spectrum, from flexitarians, who only occasionally eat meat or fish, to vegans, who avoid consuming animalbased products at all.
