Congressman Ruiz brought his wife and twins Sage and Sky; the President held one of the Congressman’s three-month-old babies. Story and Photos by Pat Krause President Obama made his second annual Fathers Day Trip to our Valley on Sat. June 20th. Air Force one touched down at 11:00 after a short visit to LA and San Francisco. On hand to greet the President was Tribal Chairman Jeff Grubbe, Rancho Mirage Mayor, Dana Hobart, and Congressman Raul Ruiz.
President Obama stood at the door of the plane and waved as he made his way down to greet them. Obama saluted the servicemen that waited for him on the ground. Congressman Ruiz told the President that he had brought along his wife and 2 little newborn twins. The President said he needed some baby time and said
they should all go over and meet the little twins. President Obama held Sky Ruiz and patted Sage Ruiz on the head and greeted Monica Ruiz. Photographers had a field day with that photograph. Presidential staff photographers all made a mad dash over to the press area to get the photos of the President and the babies. All the the security also had to follow
Dick Van Patten dies at 86
‘Eight is Enough’ star died Tuesday in Santa Monica, CA By FRAZIER MOORE AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Dick Van Patten, the genial, round-faced comic actor who premiered on Broadway as a child, starred on television in its infancy and then, in middle age, found lasting fame as the patriarch on TV’s “Eight is Enough,” has died. Van Patten died Tuesday in Santa Monica, California, of complications from diabetes, said his publicist, Daniel Bernstein. He was 86. Born in New York, the veteran entertainer began his
career as a model and child actor, making his Broadway debut in 1935 at the age of seven, billed as “Dickie Van Patten.” He would go on to appear in 27 other Broadway plays, acting alongside such giants as Melvyn Douglas, Tallulah Bankhead and, for three years, as the son of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in “O Mistress Mine.” In 1949, he began a sevenyear run on one of TV’s earliest series, the CBS comedy “Mama,” playing one of the sons of a Norwegian-American family in early 1900s San Francisco.
Van Patten’s greatest TV success was as Tom Bradford, a widower and father of eight who met and married Abby (played by Betty Buckley), with whom he set up a loving if chaotic household. The ABC comedy-drama aired from 1977-1981. “Every day on set he was a happy, jovial person, always generous and ready to play, tease and always keep us all laughing,” said Buckley. “He was the consummate professional, a wonderful actor, master of comedy, and a kind and Continues on Page 7

Ruiz said that was what is so great about our country when a poor boy from parents who toiled in the fields can rise to be a congressman and have your children meet the President. This can only happen in America. Monica Ruiz said her
mother would be excited beyond words to see the President holding one of her grandchildren. The President leaves the desert
Story and Photo by Pat Krause President Obama made this a very short trip only to have to leave again on Sunday afternoon. He made use of the two days here in the Desert to play a little golf on this personal outing. This was a whirlwind trip as, he was attending a fund-raising event on Thursday in Los Angeles. On Friday, he flew to San Francisco for another fundraiser at a private residence. He made a few speeches at the functions, some on global warming. He flew into Palm Springs on Sat. Morning. President Obama managed to get off a couple of rounds of golf while he visited the Desert on his MINI Fathers Day vacation. He played golf with friends at the private Porcupine Creek golf course on Sunday
Morning. He brought along his golfing partner buddies again this year as they play together frequently. He played a bit on Sat. afternoon after he landed. He spent Saturday night at a private home in Thunderbird Country Club. The pool reported he exercised at a facility near Thunderbird Country Club early on Sat. Morning. His days here were filled in his time away from the White House. He was scheduled to leave Sunday afternoon at 1:20. He was delayed until he flew off at 3:00. Even the heat didn’t seem to deter his determination to get off a round of golf at his favorite golf courses here in the Desert. Let’s hope he continues to make stops in our Valley to play golf and meet other world leaders.
Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 2015 Palm Springs Shortfest held its opening-night films with a happy theme. The title for the opening nights films were “Make Em Laugh” and they chose films that actually would make people laugh and put them in a good mood to start the festival. The films came from around the world and included shorts from France and Belgium. The Festival will screen more than 330 films that included 77 worlds, 65 North American and 19 USA premiers. Opening night’s first film was called, Love is Blind, and was about young couples that are having an affair when her deaf boyfriend comes home unexpectedly. The couple yell back and forth about his getting out of the house knowing her boyfriend cannot hear. The boyfriend then gives his girlfriend a surprise when he opens the door, and she sees all her hearing friends with shocked looks upon their faces as they heard it all. Other films were very short and dealt with many funny ideas. The final film was Albertine that showed an elderly couple. Pre-nuptial Agreements-A Wise Financial Decision
By Janice Gough When you are in love with someone and plan to co-habitat, romantically disturbing decisions can be awkward to discuss.

However, the best time to have a discussion about how your money is best managed is prior to tying the knot or moving in with your partner. Why do couples avoid clearly defining in writing what their wishes are in regard to their accumulated wealth? Clearly, they fear repercussions of addressing these questions. There are stories found in every form of media about notables, who are divorcing, and the problems that are derived from not establishing a prior agreement. Having this mediation with your partner will prove to become the wisest financial decision of your union. If raising the issue might be a problem, the one who wants a pre-nuptial may soften the decision by saying, “‘my financial advisor told me that I should have one”. Having this discussion may reveal in depth each partner’s attitude about money, how they handle their assets, and how effective they are in communicating. Whether your plan is to co-habitat or to marry, it is important to get your agreements in writing. Additionally, the timing of the agreement can be very important. Cases have arisen where an agreement that was executed too close to the wedding was held to be invalid because it was said to be procured under duress. A pre-nuptial should be finalized and signed well before the wedding.

the children of the first marriage. Such agreements basically say, “What’s yours is yours and what’s mine is mine. We’ll pool some resources to enjoy the time we have together but our respective wealth will remain in our own bloodline.” In another scenario, highnet-worth parent’s son is about to get married. If the wealth at issue is held by a parent of the bride or groom, using a trust can make a lot of sense. That’s frequently an elegant solution. Parental assets can be placed in trust for the child without the consent or perhaps even the knowledge of the future

is unnecessary and the board is trying to include too much commentary or discussion in the minutes. Taking minutes, while important, should not be a major task. Minutes are the record of what actions the corporation took at a given meeting. If it isn’t reflected in the minutes, then it didn’t happen. However, the function of minutes is to record what actions were taken, not to record what was said. In a nutshell, minutes should reflect: Which directors attended, what reports were received, what motions were made, and what was the outcome of each motion. Therefore, proper minutes are very concise and short. Secretaries should be able to focus on the deliberations, and not have to worry about creating a transcript or summary of the discussion. Best regards to all board Kelly, I’m V.P. of my board. You secretaries, Kelly had an article about no recording of meetings. School boards can Kelly: Is there any law that video their meetings for heaven’s prohibits a board member’s sake. When I have to sub for our brother to be hired as a manager secretary, I miss a lot. Y.O., Torrance M.B., Pasadena Dear Y.O.: Dear M.B.: Hiring a director’s brother is When meetings are being not expressly a conflict of interest recorded, most of the time it under the minimal standards
found in Civil Code Section 5350. Furthermore, it is not a contract in which the director has a “material financial interest”, triggering disclosure under Corporations Code Section 7233. However, this is an example of something which, although not illegal, should be avoided. Hiring a member or relative can lead to questions regarding the board’s integrity. Even where the member or relative offers a price substantially better than other bidders, there will always be neighbors who worry about whether the member or relative had an inside track to the contract. Hiring the brother of a director is even more questionable- the integrity questions and potential discord are not worth any savings which might be obtained. Best regards, Kelly

In the case of co-habitation,” implied and oral” agreements may or may not hold up in court, depending on the circumstances, however any attorney who has ever tried a palimony case can tell you that they are not easy cases to win. Since California is a community property state, our state laws determine 50/50 percent ownership of all assets accumulated during the marriage, when there is no prenuptial established. A sound pre-nuptial agreement can specify the financial arrangements in case of a future divorce, as well as at either spouse’s death. Constructing a pre-nuptial that will withstand a possible challenge, may be fairly straightforward. Both parties should have their own attorney, and there should be full financial disclosure on both sides. Even if the “wealthier” spouse offers to pay attorney fees for the other spouse, the other spouse’s lawyer should act in the partner’s best interest. An examination of recent tax returns can help assure to the ‘to-be-weds’, that assets and income have been reliably reported. Pre-nuptials are often used when the parties are older, entering into a second marriage, with children from the first marriage. In those cases, the idea of the agreement generally is caring for the surviving spouse during his or her widowhood while protecting an inheritance for
the property to be bound by the agreement, but a future owner may not be informed of the agreement and could dispute it. If the association is allowing a permanent alteration to common area, or something else which involves shifting responsibility to the requesting homeowner, the agreement can be styled as a recordable agreement, i.e., an agreement which can be filed with the County Recorder office. Once filed with the Recorder (aka “recorded”) it is a “covenant running with the land” and automatically binds all later owners of the residence. Recordable agreements should be drafted and approved by your association attorney. Since this agreement is intended to last a long time, you want to get it right. Thanks, Kelly

Cyril Neville’s “Don’t Look Back
Written By: Carolyn W. Gaines Aaron Neville’s baby brother named Cyril Neville is full of blues and Soul full Funk music fire ‘Don’t Look Back’ feel the message for a good reason. The Grammy Winner has been singing professionally for several years his first debut solo single, Gossip and “Tell Me What’s On Your Mind. Neville has cowritten songs with Bono of U2, Taj Mahal. Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Dr. John Tab Benoit, and Willie Nelson have featured him on recordings. Let’s Chat With A Star & See What Happens: Question 1: “Don’t Look Back who are you speaking to and why? Cyril said, “Don’t Look Back is the first song idea I got from Bart Walker (guitarist in Royal Southern Brotherhood). At the time, I was dealing with a lot of frustrations stemming from behind-the-scenes intrigues that were happening, so when I saw the name of the first song idea from Bart I just burst out laughing because I saw it as a clear and a positive sign that things were going to be alright. And, when I heard the chorus, He had written for it, that confirmed my feelings because it was exactly what I needed to hear at that point in time. I also thought that this song could wind up being the title song of the CD, and that’s just what happened! Go figure!
Question 2. Do you think your Blues sound is different than Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Eric Gales, B.B. King, and my father Roy Gaines? Cyril said,â€? I think the Blues is a Universal Feeling and is expressed differently by everyone who loves and plays it. I also think that the Blues is the basis of all American music? What would this world be without the music of BB. King, without Bobby Blue Bland doing his thing? Without Muddy Waters and Howl’ in Wolf to grow up on, the Beatles and the Stones may have never left home. There’d be no Elvis or Jerry Lee. And a young Eric Clapton may have never crossed the sea. So, I’d say the Blues is the roux of America’s musical gumbo and what makes it so tasteful to people across the planet. Question 3: Do you consider your band a Blues and Rock group‌. and Why? The Entertainer said,â€? We’re a Blues-based Spiritual, Jammin, Jazzy, Reggae, Zydeco, Roots, Rockin, World Beat, Soulful Funk Fusion Dance Band!â€? Question 4: How often do you practice, How many hours a week and is practicing good for your band? He said, “We practice as often as we can. Every sound

Well three of us were already signed to Ruf when the idea arose to join forces so no, it wasn’t a struggle at all.â€? Question 7: Why is it the Radio Stations or not playing Blues music? Just a special note Buddy Guy speaks out about Blues not being played on the Radio Stations. The radio is going through the same changes that record companies were forced to deal with. Young people don’t buy records the way their parents and grandparents did so the entire industry had to regroup. Question 8: Could you send a message to the children, teenagers who are not listening to the Blues or Performing Blues on stage today? Cyril Neville said,â€? I’d tell any young person playing music today that the Blues is the basis for every other style of American music, the Root of it all. So, no matter what you call what you’re playing: it’s still the Blues when you get right down to the nitty, gritty of it all. Bill Cosby’s lawyers ask judge to toss out defamation suit By PHILIP MARCELO Associated Press SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Bill Cosby’s lawyers have asked a federal judge to throw out a defamation lawsuit filed by three women who accuse the comedian of decades-old sexual assaults. His lawyers said Monday that the actor was merely acting in “self-defense” when his representatives responded to the allegations through statements to the media. They say some comments are protected speech while the statute of limitations has expired in others.

Parents Play a Big Role in Keeping Teen Drivers Safe
By Desert Star Staff For teens, getting behind a wheel can seem like an exciting taste of freedom. But too much leeway too soon can have dangerous results. Car crashes are the number one killer of teens, and half of all teens will be involved in a car crash before graduating high school, reports the National Safety Council (NSC). Luckily, states with a Teen Safe Driving Coalition are helping change the game. The Coalitions -- comprised of state and local government, law enforcement, public health agencies, traffic safety and injury prevention organizations, academia, businesses, teens, parents and crash survivors -- were established by NSC and The Allstate Foundation. They have

worked at the grassroots level for the last four years to educate parents and teens about the risks of teen driving. Coalitions exist in California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas to offer solutions for parents to help teens be safer. The results have been effective. Crashes involving 15to 17- year-old drivers in Coalition states have dropped nearly 34 percent since the Coalitions were established four years ago, whereas non-coalition states have experienced just a 19.5 percent drop, according to NSC analysis of federal fatality data. The Coalitions’ success is in part because they promote a program that indisputably saves lives. Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL), a proven
method of reducing teen drivers’ crash risk by 20 to 40 percent, works by maximizing experience while minimizing common driving risks teens face, such as nighttime driving and carrying teen passengers. This allows new drivers to gain experience with less exposure to high-risk scenarios. All 50 states and D.C. have implemented some form of GDL. “Beyond legislation, parents have a role to play as well,” says Kathy Bernstein, senior manager of teen driving initiatives, NSC. “As the number one resource when it comes to teaching teens to drive, parents should stay involved well after teens get their licenses.” With that in mind, Bernstein is offering some life-saving tips to families with new drivers: June 24, 2015
• Parents should drive with teens regularly even after they receive their license. A minimum of 30 minutes weekly can help ensure that safe driving skills are being employed. • Talk with teens about managing distractions, such as phones -- both handheld and hands-free -- the radio, other young passengers, and even beautiful roadside scenery. When teens are driving, they must stay focused on the task at hand. • Mile for mile, 16 and 17 year-old drivers are about three times as likely to be involved in a fatal car crash at night than during the day, according to “Injury Prevention,” a peer review journal. Parents should give teens opportunities to learn nighttime driving skills with an adult supervisor in the car.
• One of the best ways for teens to learn to drive is by example. So practice safe habits always. • Visit the Drive it Home site at www.DriveitHome.org for resources, such as weekly driving lessons and the New Driver Deal, a contract which parents and teens can create together that outlines household driving rules and the consequences for breaking them. “Remember, it’s not whether teens are ‘good kids’ or ‘responsible.’ New drivers share one thing in common -- lack of experience,” says Bernstein. “The more practice driving teens get, the better.” StatePoint

In the Committee’s opinion, all of

They help make the Coachella Valley a major center of philanthropy and home to the more than 800 nonprofits that are so integral to desert life,” Willison continued. Younger entrepreneurs from the high-tech world gave big in 2014.
This increase in giving continues to make up lost ground from the economic downturn in 2009,” Packer continued. Each year NPD provides an opportunity to celebrate the endless daily contributions of individuals and organizations across the world made to countless causes and missions. NPD is celebrated in all fifty states and Canada, offering an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of charitable giving and the spirit that makes such generosity possible.

An animal enthusiast, he co-founded Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet Foods in 1989 as well as founding National Guide Dog Month, which began in 2008 to raise awareness and money for nonprofit guide dog schools in the United States. In a 2003 interview with The Associated Press, he explained that his love of animals was born while growing up in New York: “If I was good each week, my father would take me to June 24, 2015
a different pet store each Saturday,” he said. “I had a snake, horny toads, turtles, lizards, rabbits, guinea pigs. ... I kept my alligator in the bathtub until it got too big. “We didn’t take a bath for years,” he joked. He is survived by his three actor sons - Nels, Jimmy and Vincent - as well as Patricia Van Patten, his wife of 62 years (and a former June Taylor Dancer) whom he first met, and fell for, at age 14 when seated next to her in class at their professional children’s school.

Parents: Tips to Support Healthy Hydration
By Desert Star Staff Parents often wonder how to maintain their kids’ health. One important step that may be overlooked is to ensure that young children are properly hydrated. It can also be a challenge for parents to create a menu kids will enjoy that meets the recommended Daily Value (DV) of vitamins and nutrients. “By including U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-certified organic fruits and vegetables in your children’s diets, you can help ensure your child is staying hydrated from the water in them, while also consuming the necessary vitamins, minerals and protein that they need to grow healthy and strong,” says Dr. Deena Blanchard, Pediatrician at Premier Pediatrics in New York City and a consultant for Ella’s Kitchen brand, which makes organic food for babies, toddlers and kids. “Nutritional shakes provide proteins, vitamins, and minerals, the necessary building blocks of a healthy immune system, to supplement kids’ daily diets for complete nutrition; and electrolyte waters with naturally-occurring electrolytes can also help keep kids hydrated.”

DesertSTAR
Dr. Blanchard recommends the following tips to help parents make good choices for their children. • Hydrate children, especially when sick: When children are sick, the importance of proper hydration cannot be overestimated. If eating or drinking is difficult, try giving your child smaller amounts, more frequently. Choose water, 100 percent juice or drinks that contain naturally occurring electrolytes and other components that help support kids’ immune systems. • Choose wisely: Watch out for artificial flavors, colors and preservatives as well as the amount of added sugars in sports drinks and other beverages. It is important to provide kids with beverages that are free of artificial ingredients and contain fruits and vegetables. You can be sure you’re avoiding those additions when you choose USDA organic beverages, such as Ella’s Kitchen Organic Coconut Water Electrolyte Drinks or their new Smoothie Drinks, which provide one full serving of fruit per 8 fluid ounces. • Don’t forget to hydrate when playing sports: Kids can become dehydrated while playing
sports or engaging in other physical activity. At the ballpark or playground, it is important to keep drinks on hand. Good choices include organic fruit and veggie purees, which contribute significant water to the diet and naturally-occurring electrolytes for natural rehydration. • Supplement: Though vital to proper growth and development, meeting the recommended daily intake of vitamins and nutrients can be tough, especially for little June 24, 2015
ones who are picky eaters. A tasty, protein-packed nutritional shake can help parents ensure kids get the calories and nutrition they need. Consider trying Ella’s Kitchen Coconut + Milk Nutritional Shakes, which are made with certified USDA organic low-fat milk, fruit + veggie purees and coconut water, providing 44 percent of the recommended DV of protein, 30 percent DV of calcium, as well as vitamin B12, riboflavin, iodine and electrolytes.
Made with ingredients parents recognize, these shakes provide a boost of nutrition with a taste that kids will enjoy. Visit EllasKitchen.com for more options for healthy hydration and nutrition for the little ones. In the warmer months, proper hydration is especially crucial. Parents should seek out choices for kids that support a healthy immune system. StatePoint

Cathedral City Makes History
Robert Hillery

By Pamela Price Robert A. Hillary, the first elected mayor of Cathedral City and author of Cathedral City, The Early Years 1925 to 1981 signed copies of his book at Bonta Restaurant and Bar on June 14th. The Cathedral City Historical Society organized the event. A nonstop flow of Mr. Hillary’s friends and fans was on hand to congratulate he and his wife Kay for this colorful and clever story describing Cathedral City, which began in 1925 and concludes when it was incorporated on November 16, 1981as the 18th city in Riverside County.
Mr. Hillary has been curating a meticulous collection of historical images capturing the spirit of Cathedral City page by page. His vignettes include “Memorable Residents During the Early Years” with an homage to Artist Agnes Pelton (18811961) who resided in The Cove where “ she found the tranquility required to produce her magnificent abstractions,” which were exhibited at the Palm Springs Desert Museum In 1995.” Her home at 677 E. Street in the Cove is intact. However, E. Street is now called Agnes Pelton Way, in her honor.
Mr. Hillary’s historical narrative reveals that Ripley’s Believe it or Not featured Cathedral City in a syndicated column dated December 9, 1939 stating, “There is no church in Cathedral City, CA. It is named after a canyon,” referring to it as an “unincorporated village near Riverside.” Fascinating topics include the once chic Dunes Club built on a twenty-acre tract during the 1930s where Maine’s lobster and Kansas City steaks were entrees “at $5.00 with all the trimmings.” A casino down the steps where croupiers were in

full dress kept guests occupied well into the night. At that time, the location, at Date Palm and Gerald Ford was in the middle of nowhere. The gradual growth of Cathedral City post WWII is chronicled with precision with the author combining his memories with historical facts in a conversational style, making this page turner. Unexpected were profiles of residents during the 1930s such as Kate Price famous for her earlier career as Mrs. Kelley in the silent movie series, The Cohen’s and the Kelley’s. A ramble through Cathedral
City’s history through Mr. Hilary’s eyes identifies the eclectic people who lived here while telling the stories about the streets named for them from DaVall, Plumley and Van Fleet to Wonder Palms Road, which became Frank Sinatra Drive. The Whacky World of “Murder for Two”
By Beverly Cohn Murder for Two is an Agatha Christie-style whodunit on speed. With an original fun book and entertaining music by Joe Kinosian and book and lyrics by Kellen Blair, under the superb split-second timing and staging by director Scott Schwartz, fasten your seat belts for a nonstop 90 minutes of unabashed, high spirited, comic antics. Originally performed by Jeff Blumenkrantz as the multiple “The Suspects,” and Brett Ryback as the fumbling wannabe detective, this award-winning show was named one of the “8 Best Off-Broadway Shows” by NewYork.com. In this performance, an outrageously funny, gifted actor, understudy John Wascavage took on the daunting task of playing the role of “The Suspects.” He played thirteen different characters, endowing each of them with specific vocal and physical characteristics, bringing each one to life in swift, mercurial transitions. In this two-hander tourde-force, both talented actors take turns playing the piano and belting out the catchy score – occasionally trying to upstage each other at the piano in deliberately stylized, comedic movements. You would never think that just hitting one note on the piano could be funny, but indeed it is. The plot revolves around the murder of Arthur Whitney, a famous novelist who is killed in his home on the night of his birthday celebration. The planned surprise festivities were put together by his unpleasant wife, with the guest list consisting of people who, coincidentally,
appeared as characters in some of Whitney’s novels – not all the depictions being complimentary. One by one the guests “appear” and with his rubber face and elastic body akin to Jim Carey or the famous physical comedian Frank Gorshin, Wascavage shifts into each of the characters in a nanosecond. For example, with only a single prop of granny glasses, Mrs. Whitney springs to life wearing a far out southern accent. In the blink of an eye, he is now a prima ballerina and assumes a selection of exaggerated, elongated ballet poses, including pursed lips. Meanwhile, the invisible dead body lies downstage center with everyone careful not to step on it. Poor bumbling Marcus grills each of the guests, taking prodigious notes. As he continues his investigation of the guests, they actually seem to “crowd” the stage, thanks to the remarkable Wascavage’s ability. Some of the other invisible guests included, Whitney’s nextdoor neighbors, a shrink who knows everything about everyone and is willing to spill the beans, and little nine-year-old Timmy, a member of a 12-boy chorale with only three members. For this character, Wascavage walks on his knees and of course changes his vocal sound. There’s also a firefighter, and the niece of the dead novelist, on whom Marcus develops a crush. The more suspects Marcus interviews, the more he realizes that just about everyone has a motive for wanting the novelist dead, making it difficult to eliminate any of the suspects. In addition to creating all the characters, imaginary props were
L-R: Brett Ryback and Jeff Blumenkrantz as the original dynamic, sometimes competing for center stage duo, in “Murder for Two.” Photo by Joan Marcus
also created, including a book represented by Wascavage’s hand. When Marcus says it’s hard to read, Wascavage turns his hand in the other direction, indicating Marcus was holding the invisible book upside down. In one brief scene, Marcus talks to his boss who is depicted in projected silhouette bearing an uncanny resemblance to the famous profile of Alfred Hitchcock. Laughter abounds throughout the evening with one particularly amusing running gag, which was the sound of a cell phone ringing. Wascavage broke character, as well as the fourth wall, admonishing the audience with: “You were told to turn those things off.” Phone keeps ringing. “I’ll wait.”
This happened several times throughout the evening, much to the delight of the audience some of whom, I’m sure, worried that it might really be their phone. Lest you are worry that the murderer will get away with, well, murder, just like in Agatha Christie’s many books, there is a satisfactory resolution which is revealed in a most surprising way, but that’s all I’ll say about that. The technical values of this cabaret-style production are as perfect as the performances. The interior of the mansion set design by Beowulf Boritt is an excellent frame for the non-stop zany antics, with the lighting design by Jason Lyons nicely splashing color on stage reflecting the prevailing action. The proscenium arch is encircled by lights, which light up at appropriate times in the action,
with a single bulb lighting up whenever Marcus has an idea. Jill BC DuBoff’s amusing sound design added to this show’s success, as well as Wendy Seyb’s choreography and Andrea Lauer costume design. This delightfully entertaining show has been performed all over the country. How lucky we are that it landed on stage at the Geffen Playhouse. subject matter embedded in the premise and dialogue of “Bad Jews”, a new modern comedy written by acclaimed young playwright Joshua Harmon. The ambiguously titled and talky play currently on stage at the Geffen Playhouse is directed by Matt Shakman, who helms his production with one directorial foot planted in “tradition” and the other directorial foot solidly rooted in the secular 21st century.
What’s a young, talented, cast to do when faced with the dichotomy of a comedy/mellowdrama with such parameters? Why, just act the hell out of it and let the chips fall where they may. The story revolves around ”good Jew?” Daphna Feygenbaum (Molly Ephraim) who swears to one and all that she is the most devout Jew in her family. T H E AT R E ‘Phantom of the Opera’ -- He’s Back! BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved musical “The Phantom of the Opera,” based upon the French novel “Le Fantome de lOpera” by Gaston Leroux, crossed the pond from London to Broadway, starring Michael Crawford in the title role, with Sarah Brightman as Christine Daae. The show was an immediate smash hit, winning seven Tony Awards in 1988, including Best Musical. Now, nearly thirty years later, this ‘phan-nomal’ musical still thrills audiences in New York, making the “Phantom of the Opera” the longest running musical in Broadway history. If you missed seeing the show in the past, Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular brand new production of “The Phantom Of The Opera” will be at the Hollywood Pantages through August 2nd as part of a brand new North American Tour. The updated production features a new scenic design by Paul Brown with Tony Award-winning original costume design by Maria Bjornson, lighting design by Tony Award-winner Paule Constable, fresh choreography by Scott Ambler and new staging by director Laurence Connor. This updated production, overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Macintosh, as well as features many exciting special effects, including the show’s legendary chandelier (always a show ‘highlight’). Chris Mann, Christina Aguilara’s finalist on NBCs “The Voice,” stars as the mysterious and elusive phantom with Katie Travis and Storm Lineberger as Christine Daae and Raoul. In the story the elusive, mysterious, disfigured phantom, known also as the Opera Ghost, dwells in the dark labyrinth beneath the Paris Opera. He has become enamored with a lovely young soprano, Christine Daae and is determined to make her
a star. This causes problems for Raoul who has been in love with Christine since their childhood days. It also frustrates the opera’s new owners, Monsieurs Andre and Firmin, played by Edward Staudemayer and David Benoit respectively and infuriates the opera’s Prima Donna, Carlotta (Jacquelynne Fontaine). When the phantom’s plans and desires are thwarted, things turn deadly and dangerous for all concerned. In the new production, additional dialogue and lyrics by Richard Stilgoe to the original book and score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Charles Hart have strengthened the storyline. The changes give added dimension to the characters as this dark, romantic tale unfolds amid tension and beautiful music that include such memorable songs as “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask Of You” and “Masquerade.” As striking as the new set and additional dialogues are, one change is not necessarily for the better. The second act still opens with the melodious “Masquerade,” but this time there is no vast staircase on which elaborately clad performers descend in unique costumes and masks. Instead, the act begins in a lavish ballroom with dancers wearing beautiful formal clothes of the period that is not as striking and flamboyant as the original. However, if you have never seen the show before, you won’t be disappointed since the dancing is now more elaborate and lovely to watch, and the phantom still makes a dramatic appearance in the midst of the party goers in order to give Andre and Firmin a list of his demands for the new opera he has written for Christine. He then disappears magically in a flurry of flames. If you are in the front row you, along with the revelers on stage, will feel the heat generated by his abrupt departure. At the Pantages Theatre

can be entertaining, at times, but only when viewing it from outside the war zone. One character, Jonah Haber (Raviv Ullman), the younger cousin is calmly and emotionally detached from the heated, invective-filled debate - lots of f-bombs being tossed - between his brother and Daphna. “I do not want to become involved at this time” Jonah frequently says while resisting the urge to be drawn into the family squabbles when asked for his opinion. “Bad Jews” is an off-putting title and it’s misleading as well. It may dissuade some from attending a crackling energetic production. That would be a pity, because

“ Wild Tales,” an Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, is now available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital HD as of June 16. The film, produced by Pedro and Agustin Almodovar and written and directed by Damian Szifron, is divided into six individual stories that deal with people who cross the line of civility into madness or rage when faced with perceived injustices. This dark comedy is often hilarious, particularly in the segment devoted to an undeserved parking ticket. I personally was able to identify with this one wholeheartedly as things go from bad to even worse for our hapless hero who tries unsuccessfully to cope before taking action. The opening story is also very clever and takes place on a crowded airliner. Suddenly the passengers discover they are all on this flight for a reason. Uh, oh!
A lover’s betrayal, discovered at the couple’s wedding reception, unleashes a violent reaction on the part of the distraught bride, and the road rage vignette will serve as a cautionary tale for anyone who tends to get angry with fellow drivers on the freeway.
If you think, only animals can behave in a beastly manner, this wildly imaginative sextet of stories will not only make you laugh, it will encourage you to think twice before flying off the handle. Rated R for violence, language and brief sexuality. The DVD comes with bonus material.
one would the miss seeing four fantastic actors performing at the top of their games: Molly Ephraim is maddeningly effective as Daphna, despite that high-pitched screeching delivery. Ari Brand is a controlled IED device just waiting to be stepped on. Both Ephraim and Brand deliver exquisite performance gems. Also, Lili Fuller shines in her understated girlfriend portrayal caught between the feuding Ari and his cousin Daphna. Raviv Ullman is a bit of the mystery man in the proceedings but he has a very special moment just before the curtain comes down. In the technical department the creative team led by director Shakman has his set designer
John Arone, render a one-set, messy apartment; strewn with bed-sheets, blankets, and clothing that provide the look that twenty somethings just seem to relish. Lights by designer Elizabeth Harper deliver just the right amount of light in order to see the on stage action and the costumes of designer E.B. Brooks. If I had to be picky about one aspect of this stellar production it would be to ask the director to modulate and lower the volume and vocal delivery of Daphna and Liam. When one begins the play with everyone at the top of the ceiling it’s tough for the actors to grow. They’re already at the top and the narrative flow begins to
sound like it’s a Johnny one-note performance with everyone yelling. On exiting the theatre, one could hear snatches of patron conversation. “Did you think the young Jewish girl was right?” to “I thought the quiet brother was really involved without saying much.” I spoke to a patron who said “Boy, the young actress was really a despicable person, but that’s what the playwright wanted her to be I guess”. When plays produce comments like these, one knows the actors are doing their job in Spades and loving every minute of it. “Bad Jews” performs at the Geffen Playhouse and runs through July 19, 2015.

Thought provoking comedy has audiences talking dialogue and theatrical craftsmanship at its finest. It is talky; but everything that needs to be said is accomplished in 87 minutes. There is no intermission. One doesn’t have to be Jewish either, in order to relate to the verbal fisticuffs and comedic poison-tipped darts being hurled by a proactive Daphna toward a non-receptive Liam and his girlfriend Melody (Lili Fuller). We’ve all seen either relatives, husbands and wives (Albee’s George and Martha come to mind) and friends perform their comic and sad verbal dances of animus. Tips to Throw Delicious Summer Birthday Parties for Kids
By Desert Star Staff Nothing beats the anticipation of your birthday when you are a child. But once school’s out, it can be tough to gather all your child’s friends due to summer camps and family vacations. To combat this perennial summer birthday concern, some parents throw a big party during the school year and another smaller family shindig on the actual date. Others make sure the day is full of surprises, including yummy, unforgettable treats. Here are some great ideas to make the day extra delicious, from three lifestyle and entertaining experts:
Berry, Berry Good: “Every family has their special touches that turn children into excitement charged little bees buzzing around practically giddy with anticipation. For me, that was a can of whipped cream,” writes food and lifestyle expert Coryanne Ettiene, reflecting on her childhood in a recent posting on her “Kitchen Living with Coryanne” blog. “The moment I would open the fridge door and see that bright red top, my heart would nearly burst from happiness while I let dreams of whipped cream swirl in my head.” With this in mind, a favorite easy recipe for birthday party strawberry shortcake gives the dessert a mini makeover with
individual frozen shortcake bites, says Ettiene, whose nostalgia for her sweet childhood memories led her to partner with Reddi-wip on their summer #PartyReddi promotion, which challenges partiers to create recipes with the whipped topping. You can make Ettiene’s frozen bites by slicing strawberries across the waist (so the hole appears in the center), cutting small squares of angel food cake, and stacking them together with colorful paper straws through the middle. Place them in the freezer for up to an hour and serve with a small bowl of Reddi-wip for dipping. Or for even quicker birthday treats, add a slice of berry and a slice of angel food
cake to serving spoons and top with the whipped topping. Sundae Tea Party: Inspired by the spirit of the tea parties most girls love so dearly, Dawn Sandomeno and Elizabeth Mascali, co-founders of The Party Bluprints Blog, are sharing tips for a tea party with an ice cream sundae twist. This birthday party idea is perfect for summer and can be hosted indoors or out. Set a table with personal sundae stations for each guest. Each setting should have its own parfait glass with ice cream and three soup spoons or tasting spoons with toppings. Choose traditional options like sprinkles, minimarshmallows, and flavored
syrups or try something new like fresh fruit, pretzels or popcorn. Then add some fun by placing several cans of Reddi-wip on the table so each child can spritz her sundae herself. Just beware: whipped topping with real cream can go fast, especially with sugared-up fingers on the button, so have enough on hand. For a fun setting, build your tablescape on a coffee table and provide colorful pillows for seating. Polka dots and stripes can evoke the vibe of a retro sundae shop. Above all, show your child how special he or she is by celebrating the big day together. These memories can be the biggest treat of all. StatePoint

Solving Jail Overcrowding Through Public Partnerships
By Eric Granof Jail overcrowding here in California has been an ongoing problem for many years. However, it has been greatly exacerbated by AB109, the prison realignment initiative, which has pushed increasing numbers of convicted state prisoners down to our local jails. The influx of these individuals has overwhelmed community leaders, who are at a loss as to how to handle inmates that county jails were never intended to accommodate. County jails were originally designed to house persons awaiting trial (pretrial populations), as well as those serving sentences of one year or less. Those with longer sentences were sent to a state prison. Because of AB109, county jails have been turned into a broad incarceration solution for individuals with sentences
ranging from short to long term, including both violent and nonviolent inmates. Seemingly lost in the chaos of AB109, have been the pretrial populations that reside in every county jail. These individuals are being utilized as a sort of flow control, released whenever jails require more bed space for those already convicted of presumably more serious or dangerous charges. The traffic jam of persons flowing through our jails has created a tremendous demand for solutions to get the pretrial population through the system as efficiently and safely as possible. Jails have become extremely crowded and something has to give. The commercial bail industry has been made a target by some looking to lay blame for the problem. As the argument goes, jails are overcrowded because the folks sitting in them
can’t afford a bail bond. This may sound reasonable, but is patently untrue. To illustrate, let’s look at the possibility of completely eliminating commercial bail – frequently suggested as an easy solution. Persons awaiting trial would simply be released on their own recognizance. In one easy step, the overcrowding problem would be gone, right? Probably not. Oregon, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kentucky are among states dealing with significant jail overcrowding issues. Yet, none have commercial bail. Obviously, bail cannot be the root cause of the problem. To come up with a realistic solution to jail overcrowding, it’s first necessary to understand the actual purpose of pretrial release, which is to guarantee the appearance in court of an individual who has been charged with a crime. If a judge feels that an arrestee is a flight risk and may not show up for trial, he
has the ability to hold him without bail. Alternatively, bail can be set at a higher dollar amount. This is to provide an incentive for the defendant to show – or risk losing the entire amount of the bail. More than any other method of release, commercial bail industry excels at guaranteeing a defendant’s appearance in court by providing for accountability. Numerous studies, including those conducted by the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, have proven this to be true. However, entering into the equation are defendants who are extremely low risk and/or who may have extraordinary needs. These persons (typically the indigent or those with substance abuse issues) might require special assistance. Public sector pretrial programs exist to help these individuals who can’t otherwise help themselves. Unfortunately, these same public sector programs have been utilized with increasing frequency for dealing with defendants without special needs. Getting someone into an alcohol abuse program is very different than ensuring someone will show up for court! Different needs in the criminal justice system require different solutions. The logical solution to jail overcrowding lies in allowing the private sector commercial bail industry to do its job, moving defendants through the system. While public sector pretrial service agencies perform a vital role in helping the truly indigent
and those who are functionally incapacitated, allowing them to handle all forms of pretrial release is inefficient. Not only is commercial bail a far more effective method of release, it bolsters public safety by holding defendants accountable. As the ramifications of AB109 continue to play out, the need to address the resulting jail overcrowding issue in a meaningful way has become urgent. Both private and public entities are important components of the criminal justice system, so it’s time that all parties to come together to find the best way to fix our problems. The stakes are far too high to delay the resolution of this critical issue. Eric Granof serves as Vice President of Corporate Communications for AIA/ ExpertBail (www.ExpertBail.com). The AIA family of companies is the nation’s largest underwriter of bail and has been partnering with agents across the country for over a century. Formed in 2003, AIA is an alliance of the industry’s leading insurance companies Allegheny Casualty, International Fidelity Insurance Company and Associated Bond. ExpertBail is a national network of bail bonds agents, which sets professional standards of integrity and conduct for agencies throughout the country. Created by AIA, ExpertBail also serves to educate the public on how bail, properly handled, supports the criminal justice system and increases public safety.
Worker Gets Probation for Burglarizing PS Restaurant
By KMIR News Staff INDIO, Ca. - A former Palm Springs restaurant worker whole stole $2,000 before setting fire to the eatery while about 100 customers were inside was sentenced today to probation and ordered to enroll in a mental health program, despite the objections of his ex-employer and a prosecutor. Upon his release from county jail on June 23, Ripp Trammell Goforth, 53, must enroll in a year-long county mental health probation program commonly known as ``mental health court’’ and will be on probation for five years. The plea deal also requires the defendant to pay $14,000 in restitution, and carries a 12year suspended prison sentence, which Goforth could be required to serve if he commits additional crimes. The plea deal was opposed by Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth Tucker, who told Superior Court Judge James S. Hawkins that the prosecution wanted a prison sentence, and by the defendant’s former employer.

Twin Palms Bistro & Lounge owner Pat Daltroff told the judge he fears Goforth is a danger to the community. ``I’m blown away by what’s going on right now,’’ Daltroff told the judge, adding: ``He (Goforth) actually tried to kill me that night, and he’s going to walk away scot-free.’’ The Cathedral City man pleaded guilty to one count each of burglary and arson of an inhibited structure and admitted a sentence-enhancement for using an accelerant -- gasoline -- to start the fire on Feb. 25. He also pleaded guilty to an unrelated drunken driving charge, and was given credit for time served. Daltroff said he was standing in a puddle of gasoline as Goforth started the fire, and thought the defendant should have been charged with attempted murder. ``I can’t even explain to you why I didn’t burn up,’’ Daltroff said. `If he can do this to me, there’s no telling what else he’s capable of.’’ The business owner
described Goforth as a oncetrusted employee and friend, whom he assigned to fill whatever role the restaurant needed at a given time. He said he was at a loss to explain Goforth’s motives and suggested he receive mental health treatment before being set free, not afterward. Defense attorney Anthony Valente said after the hearing that Goforth had no prior criminal history and that a team of mental health experts who thoroughly investigated the case and interviewed numerous fellow employees and relatives recommended the probation. ``He’s going to be receiving the treatment that even the victim stated he needs,’’ his lawyer said. ``The outcome here is going to benefit the public tremendously. We have employees who supported him and corroborated that he needs help.’’ Most terms and conditions of Goforth’s mental health probation are confidential, and it was unclear whether the program is inpatient or outpatient. His attorney said he was unable to disclose details except to say June 24, 2015
that Goforth is ``going to be highly supervised in that program so he does not reoffend.’’ Goforth is due back in court Sept. 14, when representatives of the program will update the court on his progress. Goforth has remained in county jail since his arrest, roughly two hours after the blaze
was reported at the restaurant at 1201 E. Palm Canyon Drive. No one was hurt in the fire, which forced the evacuation of customers and 28 employees. The owner had largely doused the flames by the time firefighters arrived, and the restaurant reopened two days later. Source KMIR www.desertstarweekly.com

Featherstone worked at Union for 43 years, inventing hundreds of products in that time and rising to the position of president before his retirement in 1999. “People say they’re tacky, but all great art began as tacky,” Featherstone said in a 1997 interview. He was forever humble about the flamingo, and in fact, his wife often brought it up in conversations with people they would meet, bringing a sheepish smile from her husband, she said. The flamingo even made an appearance on the silver screen. A pink flamingo, dubbed Featherstone of course, was a major character in the 2011

Creator of pink plastic lawn flamingo dies at 79
By MARK PRATT Associated Press BOSTON (AP) - Don Featherstone was a classically trained painter, a talented sculptor and artist who became famous for creating the pink plastic lawn flamingo - the ultimate piece of American suburban kitsch. And it didn’t bother him a bit. Featherstone, who died Monday at 79, embraced the fame the invention brought him. He died at an elder care facility in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, after a long battle with Lewy body dementia, his wife of 40 years, Nancy, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. “He was the nicest guy in the world,” Nancy Featherstone said. “He didn’t have a selfish bone in his body. He was funny and had a wonderful sense of humor and he made me so happy for 40 years.” Featherstone, who studied art at the Worcester Art

animated movie “Gnomeo & Juliet.” “The thing that thrilled him the most was that movie,” Nancy Featherstone said. “Humble” is how Marc Abrahams, editor the Annals of Improbable Research magazine, remembers Featherstone. The magazine hands out an annual spoof on the Nobel Prizes known as the Ig Nobels. Abrahams became good friends with Featherstone after he won the Ig Nobel for art in 1996. Featherstone kept his real artistic talent under wraps to everyone except those closest to him, Abrahams said. “He decided it would destroy the illusion and pleasure for people who knew him for the flamingo, so he only let those very close to him see his work,” he said. The flamingo almost met its demise in 2006, when Union
went out of business. But the company was eventually bought by Cado Products Inc., which to this day proudly manufactures the ornaments in Fitchburg, retailing for about $14.99 a pair. “We still sell thousands of them a year,” said Bruce Zarozny, president of Cado, noting that the company’s packaging refers to them as “The original Featherstone pink flamingo. He’s not sure how many have been sold over the years, but it’s in the millions. “They say there are more plastic Featherstone flamingos in the world than real flamingos,” he said. In addition to his wife, Featherstone is survived by two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A wake is scheduled for Friday with a funeral Mass scheduled for Saturday at St. Joseph Church in Fitchburg.

Morrissey, Bloc Party, Frank Ocean to Headline 12th FYF Fest
By Dan Marinelli LOS ANGELES – With a stellar musical lineup and some of the best food trucks Southern California has to offer, Los Angeles’ Exposition Park is getting ready to host the 12th running of FYF Fest on August 22 and 23. Morrissey, Bloc Party, Frank Ocean, Flume and Chet Faker are a few of the many artists set headline what some have dubbed a “mini Coachella.” Getting top-notch artists each year has resulted in an increase in FYF’s popularity over the years, drawing a large laid-back hipster So Cal audience. It has gotten so crowded to the point that FYF needed to change the venue from LA
State Historic Park to its current, larger location. Now, the festival has become one of the most anticipated events of the summer for Angelinos and it’s esteem is evident by how outrageously packed the Exposition Park was last year. Despite the move to a larger space, there were still some organizational issues present in 2014. There was a cluster walk attendees had to endure from the entrance to the main stage (the only walkway between the two); which happened to be stage farthest from the entrance. Additionally, festivalgoers were denied entrance to the Sports Arena because of capacity limitations. This year, things have been
restructured for the better. Recently, FYF released a map for 2015 with a second walkway added between the entrance and the main stage, which will definitely cut down on foot traffic. Unfortunately, due to fire hazard, there is still no entrance guarantee to the Sports Arena but organizers are aware of what happened last year and will likely do what they can to allow the maximum amount of attendees inside. Even with the minor complications in 2014, the overall atmosphere of FYF remained fun and positive. In fact, all tickets for this year are likely to sell out and the single-day option is already sold out – so there was obviously no bad taste
left in the mouth of the fans. Though the Coachella Valley already has a flagship festival, it would be fabulous to see FYF travel east for the desert crowd. Until then, all of us will make the
trip west because FYF Fest is definitely one a summer event not to miss. For more on entertainment in Southern California, follow Dan on Twitter @dsmarine7.
Queen Elizabeth II begins state visit to Germany
By Gregory Katz And David Rising Associated Press BERLIN (AP) - Queen Elizabeth II began a state visit to Germany on Tuesday that will include her first trip to a former Nazi concentration camp. The 89-year-old monarch and her husband Prince Philip, 94, received a red-carpet welcome as they left their jet at Tegel airport on a grey Berlin evening. A German military honor guard lined their route to their car, while artillery fired a 21-gun salute and fighter jets overflew the area in tribute.

The two shook hands with the British ambassador and others before walking to their waiting limousine to take them to the capital’s Hotel Adlon, which overlooks the historic Brandenburg Gate. The state visit will focus on Berlin and Frankfurt, but the queen and Philip also plan to visit the Bergen-Belsen camp where diarist Anne Frank and her sister Margot died just weeks before the British liberated it on April 15, 1945. She will visit a memorial dedicated to the sisters and to
meet with aging survivors and liberators of the notorious Nazi camp. “It is fitting the queen should go,” said Bernard Levy, 89, who helped liberate the camp as a young soldier and has been asked by the queen to attend the wreath-laying ceremony. “Holocaust education is so paramount, and many kids of today don’t really know about it. The queen going there lends credence.” He said many who saw the horrors at the camp, or suffered as prisoners, tried to put the June 24, 2015
experience behind them but are now finding that they want to talk about it. “After 70 years, there’s been a revival of people who want to say something before they die,” said Levy, speaking on behalf of the Holocaust Educational Trust. Elizabeth and Philip are planning a strenuous schedule. Elizabeth will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Wednesday after a boat trip along the River Spree. They will also meet with President Joachim Gauck.
Thursday will be spent in the financial hub of Frankfurt, with time blocked out for the queen to meet the public in the city’s central square. On Friday, the royal couple plans to meet with residents of Berlin in Pariser Platz before traveling to Lower Saxony for the concentration camp visit. The queen and Philip also made state visits to Germany in May 1965, May 1978, October 1992 and November 2004. Katz reported from London. Source KMIR www.desertstarweekly.com
Inspiring World Premiere Musical At La Jolla Playhouse

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic One never knows where the next small exquisite gem of a play or musical will come from. Story ideas are all around us just waiting to be discovered by talented and creative people. Whenever the La Jolla Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley, gets wind of a new and fresh project, it’s a pretty safe bet that Playhouse audiences are going to be in for a special treat. The musical “Come From Away” by the Canadian husbandand wife team of Irene Sankoff and David Hein, directed by Ashley made its World Premiere debut at the Sheila and Hughes Poitier Theatre last weekend to thunderous applause and standing ovations. Big things often have small beginnings. For America, nothing was bigger and more horrifying than the Terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. It’s been a defining moment in modern American history. How to expiate the demons of that day and its immediate aftermath, hasn’t really been addressed by many American writers yet. The scars are too deep. Yet, there are stories to be told. And some no doubt with unexpected or a particular point of view. In “Come From Away”, the story informs the audience in song, dance, and narrative about the generosity and compassion of our Canadian neighbors north of the of the 45th parallel. When the first-ever national “ground stop” of all aviation
in US airspace took place, 38 jetliners were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, along with 7000 passengers from countries all over the world; sitting for five days in an airport that most probably never heard of. How a city that sported two policemen, a small fire department, one library, a one person SPCA unit, and a nononsense mayor who galvanizes the town residents into becoming the most hospitable and compassionate of hosts is the stuff that becomes a legend over time. Director Chris Ashley has a penchant and a winning track record in sending La Jolla Playhouse productions on to, not only Broadway (“Memphis”, “Peter and the Starcatchers”, “Jersey Boys” etc.), but onto Regional stages around the country as well. One of the most interesting aspects of this unique production is that the show is chock full of adult singer-actors; many of a certain age. One also gets the feeling of Canadian verisimilitude the minute the curtain goes up. The song “Welcome to Newfoundland” gives one insight into the warm and winning character of our Canadian “cousins”. The splendid ensemble cast of twelve performers, who portray multiple characters, immediately lay out the story plot in their musical intro’s and dialogue exchanges. person onstage orchestra led by musical director and conductor Ian Eisendrath is a plus in helping to propel the somber backstory toward an uplifting conclusion employing the healing elements that come at times with humor. The inspired cast led by Joel Hatch, playing the Mayor, generate enough energy to light the city of La Jolla and surrounding areas. Large casts are not always conducive
to naming each performer, but this excellent ensemble cast deserves the honor: The aforementioned Joel Hatch; Jenn Colella; Petrina Bromley; Rodney Hicks; Lee MacDonald; Allison Spratt Pearce; Caesar Samoya; O. Smith; Sharon Wheatley and Astrid Van Wieren, are nothing short of terrific. Such musical numbers as “Stop the World”, “Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere” and the
finale by Hatch and the company is proof that our society, despite its uglier sides and moments, just might be worth saving after all. “ C o m e F ro m Aw a y ” performs at the La Jolla Playhouse Potiker Theatre and runs through July 12, 2015.
