PS ShortFest at Camelot

22nd Annual Palm Springs International Short Film Fest Launched By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic It’s the largest short film festival in North America and its being held right here in Palm Springs. This year marks the 22nd time short films take center stage over their longer full length feature film cousins from the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) held in January every year. The short film genre is a format geared to telling its creative story in a matter of minutes. For fans of short films this is what draws them

to short film festivals. To view the talent and creativity of filmmakers is the all-important fan ingredient required, and this year’s lineup of films from 54 countries is no exception. The festival will screen over 325 films from all genres and subject matter at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs, beginning Tuesday, June 21st at 6:30 pm and will run until Monday, June 27, 2016. The 87 minute Opening Night film program consists of six short films from awardwinning filmmakers that range in a screening time of

between 11 to 20 minutes, and come from filmmakers in UK/Kenya, Netherlands, France, Kyrgyzstan/UK, and two films from the USA. All opening night films are award winners from the world’s top film festivals and make up this delightful package of films, which, are designed to spotlight the most talented emerging international film directors. All the screenings are formatted into subject genres in such a way as to present six or eight short films in one sitting that run approximately 90 minutes. Over the six days of

By Desert Start Staff As the Republican majority called an early vacation and left town, Democrats ended their 24-hour protest that called for gun control by occupying the floor of the House of Representatives. Congress is officially in recess until after the July 4 holiday. Representative John Lewis (D-Georgia), ended the sit-in at 1:04 p.m. Thursday, just over 24 hours after he began the protest by taking the floor. The protesting Democrats had camped out on the floor of

the House for over 24 hours. After the Republican leadership cut the official camera feed from inside the chambers on Wednesday, the cable channel C-SPAN began broadcasting the Periscope and Facebook Live feeds recorded by the sit-in participants. The stated goal of the protest – to force the Republican leadership to put gun control measures up for a vote – was rendered moot on Thursday, however, when Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) declared

the House in recess until after Independence Day. Though Ryan ordered television cameras to cut their feed to the network, since this is 2016, the live streaming platforms helped Democrats continue their media stunt throughout the night and into Thursday morning. The attempt to censor the opposition had a reverse effect, by inspiring the hashtag #NoBillNoBreak which is now trending online.

the festival the public will view over 325 films. Festival Director Helen du Toit says “Our program team has scoured the planet for powerful stories that represent new takes on an age-old storytelling tradition. Drawing on our wide range of tastes, experiences and individuals expertise, we have shaped a program full of films that will take you on journeys from the profound, to the sublime.” The Short Film Festival attendance packages are varied to suit all tastes and pocketbooks. For information on purchasing individual tickets

or any of the various packages like the Opening Night, The Reel Deal 6 – Pack, the Awards Night, The Insider Pass, and the Chairman’s Pass packages, please call the festival box office at 760-778-8979, or go online to www.psfilmfest.org, or purchase tickets directly from the Camelot Theatres, box office located at 2300 E. Baristo Road, Palm Springs. Hours of Operation: 10 am to 5 pm. This fun, intriguing, and thought-provoking festival comes just once a year. I promise, you won’t be disappointed. Don’t Miss It!

Our own Congressman Raul Ruiz also joined his colleagues to force the house vote. “I believe that drastic times need bold action and we demand speaker Ryan to simply let us vote for the bill that would not allow terrorists to purchase guns,” Congressman Ruiz said. “They could vote no if they want to, but let us vote.”

Cooling off in cool Brittany

By Anthony Grant Flung like a defiant forearm against the Atlantic, Brittany is as near to New England literally and figuratively - as France gets. Its vast, windbitten littoral is the province of old salts and a magnet for nature lovers, and is mostly unsuited for the sorts of gentrified seaside resorts one finds up the coast in Normandy. Brittany is all cliffs and wide, deserted beaches, villages with sturdy granite houses, and fractured coasts of pink granite. There are nearly 800 meandering miles of coast. Take a TGV train from Paris to Rennes and from there rent a car. Less than an hour’s drive up route N137 puts you just outside of Jacques Cartier’s hometown of St.-Malo, a fine place to begin a tour. Near it, the 14th-century fortress Fort la Latte is the coolest castle I have ever seen, and not just be cause the 1957 swashbuckler flick “The Vikings,” starring

Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas, was filmed there. Its cylindrical keep is perched on a rocky promontory surrounded by a swirling blue-green sea, and to access it you have to cross two drawbridges. The castle has undergone medieval sieges, served as a coastal defense site under Louis XIV, and as a prison during the French Revolution. Beyond the fort is the Cape Frehel, which, with its reddish-black cliffs plunging nearly 300 feet to the luminous ocean, is one of the most spectacular stretches of the Breton coastline. The bracing air and views are best appreciated by taking a halfhour walk along the cliff top paths. Though it was too foggy for me to see it, on a clear day you can see 30 miles west to the Ile de Brehat, which I had intended as my next stop. As I made my way up route D786, the allure of the sea was too strong to resist, however,

and just beyond the village of Plouha, I made a stop at a bluff overlooking the pristine expanse of Bonaparte Beach. Though you would hardly have an inkling of it today, the beach was the site of clandestine Allied naval operations from 1942 to 1944. A plaque and

stele commemorate them. As small as it is gorgeous, Ile de Brehat is like Nantucket, the coast of Maine around Bar Harbor, and a fantasy vision of pastoral Ireland, all rolled into one. No cars are allowed on the island (there are parking lots at the port of Arcouest, from where a ferry makes regular 15-minute crossings), leaving one free to amble around the patchwork of little lanes. Everywhere are green fields and roses and hydrangeas of every hue, interrupted only by the occasional renovated medieval manor that some lucky Parisian calls a second home. Follow the signs to the Phare du Paon (Peacock Lighthouse) at the pinkgranite-covered northern tip of the island. At this site, the color of the granite changes according to the light and is at its most ethereal at twilight, which arrives around 10 p.m. in June. The lighthouse is also made of luminous soft pink granite, but it’s worth noting that the Germans blew

up the first one in 1944. I could have lingered in Brehat for a week, but then I wouldn’t have had time to stroll the Sentier des Douaniers, a pathway of ravishing beauty about 25 miles west at Ploumanac’h, the heart of Brittany’s Pink Granite Coast. Against a backdrop of deepgreen umbrella pines, smooth pink boulders in all sorts of fantastical shapes tumble down to the ocean. The coastal path takes about three hours to walk up and down. St.-Jean-du-Doigt, or St.-Jean of the Finger, is so named for the index finger of St. John the Baptist said to have found its way to the 15th-century church here. I looked everywhere for the sacred phalange but couldn’t find it, prompting me to ask a local greengrocer, who said it had been moved to a bank for temporary safekeeping. I satisfied myself with a tray of locally grown sweet strawberries - practically a religious experience in itself.

“Native Americans, Latinos, African Americans, veterans, young, old -- everyone.” Coalition members said they also would like Obama

to issue a presidential memorandum on the occasion of the Park Service’s centennial on Aug. 25.

Obamas’ Yosemite Visit Prompts Call for Cultural Diversity in Parks By Desert Star Staff YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. -- President Obama, the First Lady and their daughters are visiting Yosemite National Park this weekend, and a group known as the “Next 100 Coalition” is hoping he’ll touch on the need for cultural diversity in managing the nation’s public lands. The visit comes ahead of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service this summer. Xavier Morales, executive director of the Praxis Project, a nonprofit group that promotes environmental justice, praised the president for creating Cesar Chavez National Monument in the nearby Central Valley, but said there’s

much more to be done. “By not protecting areas of significance of diverse histories,” Morales said, “we’re really not telling the full story of the United States.” Rangers at Yosemite tell the story of Chinese cook Tie Sing, who fed members of the U.S. Geological Survey in the early 1900s as they explored Yosemite Valley. They also recall the work of the Buffalo Soldiers, an all-AfricanAmerican regiment stationed in the park around that same time. Steve Dunwoody, California director of the Vet Voice Foundation, said the nation is increasingly diverse, and the parks ought to reflect that. “We’d love for the

president to really take up the cause of advancing diversity in our public lands that cover all the groups that enjoy them,” he said,

E N T E RTA I N M E N T ‘Disney.Pixar: Finding Dory’--Just Keep Swimming BY THEDA KLEINHANS REICHMAN

It’s been 13 years since Dory, a very forgetful little blue tang fish, joined forces with Marlon, an orange and white striped clown fish, to find his lost son Nemo. And the good news is— your favorite fish trio is back again on the big screen, but in terms of their story, only one year has gone by under the sea. As their saga begins, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) suddenly realizes she has a family besides Marlon and Nemo (vocals by Albert

Brooks and Hayden Rolence respectively), and she is determined to find her longlost mom and dad. Reluctantly, Marlon agrees to leave the safety of their reef and swim across the ocean to California’s prestigious Marine Life Institute, a rehabilitation center and aquarium, in an effort to find Dory’s mom and dad (Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy). Once they arrive in California, Dory also enlists the help of three of the most endearing residents at the rehab center— Hank (voice of Ed O’Neill from TVs “Modern Family”) a cantankerous octopus that no longer wants to return into the ocean, Bailey, a beluga whale (voiced by Ty Burrell, also from “Modern Family” fame) and Destiny (Kaitlin Olson) a near-sighted whale shark. As Dory begins to remember more and more events from her past life, will she and her pals be able to locate her mom and dad? After all it has been a whole year since they last saw one

another. One friend worries that they might no longer be alive. Faced with many obstacles, Dory is determined never to give up. She is going to keep on swimming, swimming, and swimming until she finds them. There are many charming, playful creatures in the film, including sea lions, sea birds

“Finding Dory” is rated PG for mild thematic elements. There are some scenes of jeopardy throughout which might be a little scary for the very young, but older kids from eight years old and up will find the adventures exciting and fun. .

••••••••••••••

You are in for a very special treat if you see “Finding Dory” at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Before the film begins there is a stage show presented by “The Bubble Guy” who forms big and small bubbles on stage in a “bubble extravaganza.” He also uses little tykes from the audience during his show...The day we saw his performance, he momentarily captured a little boy inside a giant soap bubble much to the kid’s delight. After the film and the stage show take time to enjoy several exhibit’s courtesies of the Aquarium of the Pacific. Upstairs there is an aquarium filled with lovely colorful fish. Next to this aquarium, there is a plaque to help you identify each fish and there is also a representative from the Aquarium of the Pacific to answer any questions you or the kids might have...Also upstairs in the lobby area, there is a large blue replica of Dory. So be sure to bring a camera or phone so you can take photographs. Downstairs there’s an additional display from the Aquarium of the Pacific featuring many brightly-colored fish, including one jaunty little guy who even had blue fangs. Someone from the aquarium is also on hand to answer any of your questions about the fish on display or questions you or the kids might have about the marine life in the film like the beluga whale or the octopus. DEMOCRATS END 24-HOUR GUN CONTROL SIT-IN

Due to Extreme Heat KMIR News Staff TWENTYNINE PALMS, Ca. -Joshua Tree National Park is temporarily closing a popular hiking trail for safety purposes due to the excessive heat and dry conditions. Park management closed 49 Palms Oasis to visitors and has limited the hiking trail to approximately a half of mile. “While we hesitate to close a popular hiking area in the park, dwindling water sources make it necessary,” Park wildlife ecologist, Michael

Vamstad said. “Desert bighorn sheep will not come down to drink if visitors are in the area.” Along with the heart warnings, the park is trying to get the population of desert bighorn sheep access to water at 49 Palms Oasis. All other water sources have dried up in the northern area of the park. The area’s reopening is dependent upon rainfall, otherwise the trail will remain closed for safety purposes during this heat wave.. Visitors are encouraged

to be aware of the excessive heat warnings in effect and Park Rangers are recommending visitors keep in mind their health and fitness before hiking. Visitors are also reminded to bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and appropriate clothing and headgear. The park is also telling visitors that dogs are not permitted on the trails due to their vulnerability to this excessive desert heat. Source KMIR

Don’t Let These 5 Missteps Trip Up Your Plans For Retirement

By Desert Star Staff About 10,000 Americans retire each day and millions more are lined up right behind them, waiting for the day when they can finally enjoy a little relaxation after a lifetime of toil. But many of those people could be headed for retirement disaster if they don’t develop a better understanding of what their financial needs will be once their working years come to an end. “Studies show that most Americans are way behind in saving what they will need for retirement,” says Bryan Slovon, founder and CEO of Stuart Financial Group (www.Stuartfg.com). “But that’s just one of the problems. Many people also tend to misjudge the amount of expenses they might face when they retire.” Slovon says common missteps people often make when planning for retirement include: • Their retirement strategy

is sketchy or non-existent. People often stash away money for retirement without any clear strategy about how much they should be saving and what their projected expenses in retirement might be. A carefully planned strategy will help you determine what percentage of your income you should save. If you already have a strategy, Slovon suggests reviewing it every three years to make sure you’re still on track to achieve your goals. • They live beyond their means. Perhaps all that excessive spending is working out for now while you’re fully employed. But when the regular paychecks stop there could be trouble. Slovon says it’s important in retirement planning to create a budget and stick to it. • They assume they’ll always be healthy. Many people either don’t factor in healthcare costs at all or they underestimate how much those costs might be.

One study estimated that a 65-year-old married couple who retired in 2014 would need about $220,000 to pay for healthcare costs in retirement. • They don’t save enough to cover inflation. This is an easy mistake to make – but a costly one. The amount of money you’ll need in year one of retirement isn’t the same as what you’ll need in year five and year 10, even assuming that nothing about your lifestyle changes. Inflation can chip away at your retirement nest egg, causing you to come up short. • They fail to plan for the possibility of long-term care. Most people who think ahead to retirement dream about beaches, cruises, hobbies or time with the grandchildren. They don’t give much thought to the likelihood that at some point they will require longterm care, yet that’s the case according to a survey by for 70 percent of those over Genworth Financial Inc. 65. The average nursing “It can’t be stressed home costs $6,844 a month, enough how important it is to

have a good strategy in place as you save and plan,” Slovon says. “You can’t leave financing your retirement to chance.”

Ayad Akhtar’s “Disgraced” on Stage at Mark Taper Forum

By Beverly Cohn Amir, (Hari Dhillon) an American who was raised as a Muslim, and Emily, his beautiful blond wife, (Emily Swallow) have it all. They are a happily married couple living the good life. He is a successful corporate attorney in a predominantly Jewish law firm and she is a gifted artist on the verge of having her work exhibited in an upcoming show. They live in a swanky apartment on New York’s tony upper east side and are very supportive of each other. Their good friends Isaac, (J Anthony Crane) who is curating Emily’s show, and his wife Jory, (Karen Pittman) Amir’s colleague at the law firm, have been invited for dinner in celebration of Emily’s upcoming exhibit. What begins as friends drinking champagne and eating delicious food turns into a blood bath of accusations and recriminations. These are the dominant characters in Ayad Akhtar’s mesmerizing 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Disgraced.” The playwright strips away socially acceptable layers of behavior revealing, sometimes comically, the darkest side of one’s childhood’s religious training. The unraveling of this ideal American couple begins with a newspaper story about an iman* who is in prison for his alleged terrorist activities. A team of public defenders, none of who is Muslim, is representing him. Emily, whose art is heavily influenced by the Islamic culture, cajoles her husband to become part of the team so that the iman has at least one Muslim representing him. Amir is adamant that it would hurt his career and steadfastly refuses to become involved. He goes on a rant

denigrating the teachings of the Koran saying that it was all man-made and had nothing at all to do with God. He cites some passages such as the treatment of a wife. If she errs, first you talk to her. If that doesn’t work, then you punish her. If that doesn’t work, beating her is appropriate. He also comments on the use of veils, which again, he maintains in change to is man-made in order to oppress women. It seems that Amir, gave up any connection between he and the religion into which he was born and it appears that he likes it that way, at least on the surface. Keeping within the brilliant writing of Akhtar’s play, Amir decides to show up at the courthouse to listen to the proceedings, not intending to become part of the team. However, probably because of his Muslim name, he winds up being listed in the newspaper as a member of the defense team. Thus, the loving, idyllic lifestyle he and his wife have been enjoying, begins to crack. During the earlier discussion, young Abe (Behzad Dabu) arrives for a visit. His real name is Hussein, which he changed in order not be branded a Muslim. Some pleasant, friendly banter between he and uncle Amir ensues. He playfully questions the young man’s reasons for denying his heritage. One of the outstanding elements in this play is that Abe, along with each of the other characters, has a definite arc with surprising transitions. The backlash begins at work, with some of the partners questioning Amir about where he and his parents were born. It seems the association with the iman is not something

the partners of this law firm particularly endorse. When Amir arrives home, he is quite rattled by the inquisition and is worried about his future, which was his concern from the beginning. Isaac and Jory arrive for dinner. All is fun and lighthearted, for a while at least. Then, the socially taboo discussion of religion and politics ensues. At first, his position is definitely anti-Koran, but Akhtar delves deeply into the protagonist’s subconscious and awakens training he received at an early age. Fortified with an abundance of alcohol, Amir confesses some true feelings about horrendous acts of terror, which totally shocks Emily and their guests. Tempers rise and something is revealed concerning the relationship between Emily and Isaac, which leads to a shocking, barbaric act. Akhar’s script, delves into the heart of what he perceives as the truth about a person indoctrinated from a young age on the belief system in the Koran. One might argue that this is probably true of any religion. He walks us through both sides of the issues, which could be summed up as “damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.” The consequences of what seemed to be an innocent act of just showing up, eventually becomes the tumbling down of a life evidently built on a house of cards. Under the highly skilled direction of Kimberly Senior, each of the actors gives a stunning performance as people with secrets that are revealed in the harshest manner, with the 90-minute play flying by in a flash. The production values are

excellent beginning with John Lee Beatty’s scenic design, augmented by Christine A. Binder’s lighting design, Jill BC du Boff’s sound design, and Jennifer von Mayrhauser’s costumes. “Disgraced” premiered at the American Theater Company in January 2012, was staged at Lincoln Center in October 2012, premiered in London in 2013, and made its Broadway debut in 2014. The play has travelled extremely well and is perhaps, in view of the current state of political affairs, including the rise of a dangerous, racist Donald Trump, is even more timely now as the play illuminates the darkest side of human nature perhaps hidden in the deep recesses of the unconscious.

By Desert Star Staff AT&T understands the importance of promoting its brand. So do Toyota, Disney and McDonald’s, just to name a few. But individuals often don’t understand just how critical it is for them to promote their personal brands as well. In fact, their careers depend on it. “No one from the CEO to the secretary can afford not have a strong personal brand (online and off), if they want to succeed in today’s job climate,” says Karen Tiber Leland, a branding expert and author of “The Brand Mapping Strategy: Design, Build and Accelerate Your Brand” (www.karenleland.com). A personal brand – much like those corporate brands – tells the world about you. It’s a way of selling yourself and your image in a way that leaves a positive impression.

Leland points out that personal branding is not a new idea. She notes the article that Tom Peters wrote in 1997 titled “The Brand Called You” which helped give rise to the popular idea that an individual can be just as much a brand, as a soft drink or laundry detergent. She also points out that people such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin were carefully nurturing their brand images decades and even centuries before it became fashionable. “Even though personal branding has been with us for decades,” says Leland, “the advent of social media as a daily part of all our lives, has brought it to the forefront and made it a priority in today’s wired world.” Leland says there are several reasons why it’s important for everyone to follow Churchill and Chaplin’s lead

and cultivate a personal brand. A few of those reasons include: • You need to outshine the competition. The job market is a competitive place and it’s easy to get lost in the clutter of all those other applicants. You can stand out from the crowd by carefully crafting your brand with elements that can range from the way you dress to the way you tell the story about the accomplishments you have achieved. • Social media is forcing your hand. “It’s critical to make sure your online presence (including Facebook, LinkedIn etc.) represents you in the most powerful and professional way,” says Leland. Why? Because potential employers will check them out to check you out. According to a 2015 CareerBuilder poll, 52 percent of employers use social networking sites to research job candidates. And not having

social media accounts isn’t a good option because 35 percent of those employers say they are less likely to interview someone who doesn’t have an online presence. • A negative image could undermine your career goals. While social media sites can help promote your personal brand, Leland says, they can also be your worst enemy. That same CareerBuilder study reported that 48 percent of employers chose not to hire someone based on social-media content. So ditch inappropriate photos, references to drinking, critical comments about former

employers and anything else you wouldn’t want a prospective employer to see. “Anyone who plans to wait out the personal-branding trend until it passes needs a new plan,” Leland says. ““It’s no longer an option in career management.
