Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Short Film Fest is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. They screened more short films this year than ever before. This festival just keeps growing larger each year and is now considered the most premier Short Film Festival in North America. They took
in over 5500 short films for consideration for the festival. That was a lot of movies to watch and judge for content and creativity. Over 360 films were shown at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs. Some of the most prominent filmmakers to go on to make full-size films and have garnered Oscar
nominations and wins started with short films. That is what makes this festival so unique as it gives a platform to show their movies. Filmmakers can grow with panels, discussions, and learning from each other. Professional Film Makers gave round table discussions and panels. I talked to many directors,
producers, screenwriters, and even costume designers who traveled from countries near and far just for this short fest. They are looking for recognition for their art and also to be able to learn more. The opening night short films captured what the rest of the week was like. It encompassed all types of
cinema from severe, comedy, cartoons, and other topics like love, hate, anger, family, LGBTQ, every emotion and circumstance in our everyday world. Movie lovers can sit in a beautiful cool theater for sometimes up to 90 minutes and never know what kind of Continues on Page 2
First home restaurant in the United States gets permit California mother-of-two is the first to be granted a permit to open a home restaurant By Desert Star Staff Eastvale, California: Meghan McConaghy Chane of Riverside County, California is the first Home Cook to be granted a permit to open a home restaurant in the United States. Chane found her passion for cooking after working full time as a therapist. She quickly came to love cooking but was unsure how to profit from her passion. “I was too afraid to work on a food venture before this,” said Chane, “We’d talked about a food truck, catering, or a restaurant. The fear of the financial, risk,
and the money you need up front, as well as all of the regulation and hoop jumping, felt really overwhelming.” Chane learned about the opportunity to open a Home Restaurant, when she received support from the food-focused startup, Foodnome. Their platform brings Home Cooks and Diners together and allows them to easily explore diverse cuisines in their local community. Foodnome is also dedicated to helping Home Cooks navigate the legal waters to become permitted. Continues on Page 5
