Story and Photos by Pat Krause The Palm Springs Short Film Fest is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. They screened more short films this year than ever before. This festival just keeps growing larger each year and is now considered the most premier Short Film Festival in North America. They took
in over 5500 short films for consideration for the festival. That was a lot of movies to watch and judge for content and creativity. Over 360 films were shown at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs. Some of the most prominent filmmakers to go on to make full-size films and have garnered Oscar
nominations and wins started with short films. That is what makes this festival so unique as it gives a platform to show their movies. Filmmakers can grow with panels, discussions, and learning from each other. Professional Film Makers gave round table discussions and panels. I talked to many directors,
producers, screenwriters, and even costume designers who traveled from countries near and far just for this short fest. They are looking for recognition for their art and also to be able to learn more. The opening night short films captured what the rest of the week was like. It encompassed all types of
cinema from severe, comedy, cartoons, and other topics like love, hate, anger, family, LGBTQ, every emotion and circumstance in our everyday world. Movie lovers can sit in a beautiful cool theater for sometimes up to 90 minutes and never know what kind of Continues on Page 2
First home restaurant in the United States gets permit California mother-of-two is the first to be granted a permit to open a home restaurant By Desert Star Staff Eastvale, California: Meghan McConaghy Chane of Riverside County, California is the first Home Cook to be granted a permit to open a home restaurant in the United States. Chane found her passion for cooking after working full time as a therapist. She quickly came to love cooking but was unsure how to profit from her passion. “I was too afraid to work on a food venture before this,” said Chane, “We’d talked about a food truck, catering, or a restaurant. The fear of the financial, risk,
and the money you need up front, as well as all of the regulation and hoop jumping, felt really overwhelming.” Chane learned about the opportunity to open a Home Restaurant, when she received support from the food-focused startup, Foodnome. Their platform brings Home Cooks and Diners together and allows them to easily explore diverse cuisines in their local community. Foodnome is also dedicated to helping Home Cooks navigate the legal waters to become permitted. Continues on Page 5

5 Reasons Kids Should Play Outside More By Desert Star Staff Whether it’s dance lessons, computer projects, art class or yoga, kids these days are busy bees. And while such activities are enriching and fun, experts say that many kids aren’t spending enough time doing something much simpler and every bit as important as structured programming: playing outdoors. “Finding time for the kids to play outside can be such a challenge for parents,” says Keri Wilmot, a pediatric occupational therapist and an expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org. “As a parent I worry about ‘stranger danger’ or whether my kids will be able to navigate social issues on their own.
Without spontaneity, playtime has lost some of it’s fun.” Outdoor play is necessary for healthy child development, according to The Genius of Play. The initiative, whose mission is to raise awareness about the importance of play and help parents make play a critical part of raising their kids, is sharing five benefits of unstructured outdoor playtime: • Physical Development: Research has shown that physically active kids tend to be leaner and healthier, while an inactive childhood can lead to a sedentary (and likely unhealthy) lifestyle in adulthood. Furthermore, physical play builds gross and fine motor skills necessary for success in school and beyond. Hanging
from the monkey bars, for instance, helps kids develop the hand muscles needed to grip a pencil. • Risk-Taking: Through outdoor play, children are given the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and try new things. While taking risks won’t always lead to success on the first try, moments like a first bike ride without training wheels, or the first trip down the big slide in the playground, are critical for building the confidence and resilience needed to pursue a future career, start a business, or handle life’s many challenges. • Social Skills: Childhood games played outdoors can help build social skills and teach kids to follow directions.
From games as simple as tag, to those with more complicated rules, like “Kick the Can,” “Capture the Flag,” and sports like soccer and basketball, communication, teamwork and other important social skills are developed during outdoor play. • Problem Solving: Children’s imaginations are often stimulated by the world around them. Being outside widens their horizons and can encourage kids to tap into their creativity in order to come up with solutions to challenges, such as learning how to build a sandcastle or figuring out how to climb up a jungle gym. • Reducing Stress: So much outdoor play involves physical activity, thrilling
moments and a sense of freedom, all of which can boost endorphins, helping to lower stress levels and reduce anxiety and depression. Interestingly, simply touching dirt when creating mud pies or digging for worms can be beneficial. According to a Bristol University study, certain types of “friendly” bacteria in soil have been found to activate the group of neurons that produce serotonin, which contributes to a feeling of well-being and happiness. So, don’t be afraid to let your kids get a bit dirty out there! For play ideas, expert advice and other play resources, visit TheGeniusOfPlay.org. Playtime is essential for children. To promote health, happiness and confidence, be sure some of it is spent outdoors. StatePoint

How Much Money is needed to Retire?
By Janice Gough Most people are unaware of what they will need to retire, but according to a Schwab survey of 1,000, 401(k) plan participants between the ages of 25 and 70, the average amount was $1.7 million; unfortunately, few are likely to attain that goal. Other evaluations in the survey showed that 60% of respondents said their 401(k) plan was their most significant source of retirement savings. Unfortunately, 51% of responders are currently contributing less than 10% of their salary to their 401(k), with the average annual contribution

totaling $8,788. Only a quarter of those surveyed reported contributing the maximum allowed in their 401(k) plans, which may leave them having to delay retirement. (The current maximum annual contribution for employees is $19,000 for employees under 50 and $25,000 for those 50 and older). Even though contribution levels are low, close to 90% of these employees, consider a 401(k) account, their most important benefit, …..… almost as necessary as health insurance coverage. These people all had a realistic target for retirement, however without a good plan, many aren’t likely to be on track to get where they want to go. To change this, we must look at the reasons that people are not saving or not saving enough to ever retire. One of the primary reasons for not saving more is DEBT. After paying off debts owed on Credit Cards, paying monthly bills, or paying money spent for unexpected expenses or for health issues, there is little extra money left to add to retirement savings. There are also other reasons that employees aren’t saving enough for retirement. Many, start saving too late in life, which makes it almost impossible to reach $1.7 million in assets. This study found that if employees start saving at age 45, they need to invest
as much as 35% of their salary in reaching their retirement goal, but if they start saving in their 20s, a 10% to 15% salary contribution should suffice. Early Education about Retirement planning is needed. We need to begin looking at the Big Picture in our lives and have better solutions. By designing a Lifetime Projected Income and Expense plan, it can enable us to produce a Realistic and attainable retirement outcome. More than half of those in the survey felt their financial situation would be better by receiving professional advice, and 95% said they would feel more confident in their financial decisions if they worked with an advisor. Financial planners have tools to help you see the Big picture; showing where you are now, and what your income is projected to be later, in retirement. They can also advise you the Best products to use to meet your goals. To assist in doing this, there are many terrific financial calculators today. One new calculator provides a complete economic lifetime roadmap. It evaluates which debts are paid off first and how to use debt reduction to help provide extra funds to save for retirement (based on implementing the roadmap’s plan). Their plan is to reduce taxes and interest payments. The average person

Sanders slams Trump on Iran: ‘He set fire and then put it out’
By Desert Star Staff Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has taken a swipe at US President Donald Trump, saying he does not deserve credit for preventing a possible war with Iran, because he is the one who has driven the US to its brink. In a an interview with CBS’ ‘Face the Nation’ host Margaret Brennan, the senator from Vermont could not suppress a smirk when mocking the notion that Trump somehow deserves recognition for defusing tensions with Iran with his last-minute decision to not proceed with an attack on its military sites in retaliation for the downing of a US highaltitude drone earlier that day. Sanders argued that it was Trump’s fault that the situation has flared up to the point that he had to hit the brakes. “It’s like somebody setting fire to a basket full of paper and then putting it out. He helped create the crisis, and
then he stopped the attacks.” Trump on Saturday attempted to clarify his decision to call off the strike, tweeting that he “never called the strike against Iran ‘BACK,’” but “just stopped it from going forward at this time.” Trump previously said that he decided against the attack some 10 minutes before it could be launched, when American warships and military planes were just waiting for the green light. Sanders also pulled no punches in responding to Brennan when she suggested that Trump “was just doing a limited strike,” which, according to the US president himself, could have claimed 150 Iranian lives. “Oh… just a limited strike! Oh, I’m sorry, I just didn’t know that it’s okay to simply attack another country with bombs. That’s a limited strike? That’s an act of warfare,” Sanders said. The famously anti-war senator lashed out at Trump
further for normalizing the idea that going to war with Iran “is something that might be good for this country.” Trump has been upping the ante on Iran, having sent a carrier strike group, a battery of Patriot missiles, nuclear bombers and some 2,500 extra troops to the area, while citing a growing “threat” from Tehran. Invoking
the same Iranian menace, Trump sidestepped Congress to clear $8 billion worth of weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE last month. Apart from flexing its military muscle at Iran’s doorstep, the US has blamed the Islamic Republic for attacking oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, without providing hard proof of its involvement, while
simultaneously squeezing its economy with fresh rounds of punitive economic sanctions, which Tehran labeled an “act of economic terrorism.” While he has decided not to pound Iran with missiles just now, Trump announced “additional sanctions” against the country that are due to take effect from Monday.
By Desert Star Staff US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing new “strong sanctions” against Iran in response to Tehran’s downing of an American drone last week. Trump said the latest sanctions would target Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday that Khamenei and his associates would be denied
access to financial resources by the new sanctions. The sanctions, Trump said, represent “a strong and proportionate response to Iran’s increasingly provocative actions. “The US will “continue to increase” pressure on Tehran, he added, saying that the fresh sanctions would have been imposed regardless of the incident with the downed drone. The new sanctions come a day after the
US claimed it launched massive and successful cyber strikes against Iranian military computer systems, although Tehran claimed Washignton’s efforts failed. Trump said on Friday that he had called off a military strike on Iran which would have killed 150 people, saying that he does not want war, but promising “obliteration like you’ve never seen before” if the US does decide to attack Iran. Earlier this month,
the US accused Tehran of being behind attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, but even US allies Germany and Japan have cast doubt on shaky evidence presented by the Pentagon. US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Trump’s executive order will lock up billions of dollars more in Iranian assets. Mnuchin also promised that Iranian Foreign Secretary Javad Zarif will be hit with sanctions
later in the week, adding that the US has not consulted with its allies on the specifics of the planned measures. Meanwhile, Iran has said it is prepared to shoot down American drones “again and again” if they violate its airspace. The US has claimed that the surveillance drone was shot down in international airspace, while Iran claims its was destroyed over its own territory.
By Desert Star Staff Former CIA director David Petraeus was considered for secretary of state, but there were “red flags”: he was against “torture” and a “military solution in Syria,” according to leaked vetting documents from Trump’s transition team. A trove of internal vetting documents, compiled by the Republican National Committee (RNC) at the behest of then-presidentelect Donald Trump’s team, were leaked to Axios, which reported the scoop on Sunday. While there is nothing unusual in a vetting process during which candidates’ histories are checked for potential problems, the documents give a glimpse into Washington’s “swamp,” and have been picked apart for eye-catching quotes by commentators and Twitter ‘pundits.’ Some were dumbfounded by the RNC choice of that
particular concern. For instance, four-star general Petraeus, who was mooted for the secretary of state job, had many red flags in the eyes of those who combed through his biography – and one of them was that the former CIA chief was opposed to torture. Petraeus’ argument that there can be no military solution to the Syrian conflict was also marked as a possible non-starter in the report, as well as his criticism of Brexit and the hardline approach to Russia. People who ultimately got the top government jobs also had some interesting red flags on their files, according to Axios. Former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley was flagged for saying that Trump is everything “we teach our kids not to do in kindergarten.” Mick Mulvaney, now Trump’s acting chief of staff, reportedly
considered the president “is not a very good person.” Former US secretary of state Rex Tillerson, who Trump fired in March last year, received a black mark from the RNC vetting team for having a history of doing business with Russia, supposedly as the head of ExxonMobil. “Tillerson’s Russia ties go deep,” his form stated. Former EPA head Scott Pruitt caused concern over “allegations of coziness with big energy companies.” Most of the information in the leaked documents was compiled from news reports. Many noted that the leaked documents show what everyone knows: that Washington politics remain a swamp, despite Trump’s promises to drain it. Addressing the leak, the White House hailed Trump’s ability to pick the right people, calling his administration “an incredible team” of
professionals. White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley also lashed out at the source of the leak, labeling it “cowardly,” suggesting that those behind it were “disgruntled, establishment, DC swamp creatures.” Despite her sharp criticism of then-US-president-elect Donald Trump, it appears that current Democratic presidential hopeful Tulsi Gabbard, a US army veteran, was deemed suitable by Team Trump to head the Department of Veteran Affairs. Gabbard’s file
is relatively thin. It suggests grilling the Hawaii Democrat on her support for Bernie Sanders and a controversy over her skipping a Veteran Affairs hearing to go “extreme surfing” back in 2014 instead. It was reported at the time that Gabbard met with the president-elect and his transition team officials in Trump Tower, and was considered for jobs at the Defense Department, State Department and the United Nations.

4 Ways to Beat the Summer Heat
By Desert Star Staff If you love summer and sunshine, you may be looking for ways to beat the heat that don’t necessarily
involve escaping indoors to air conditioning. Here are four ways to make the most of the summer season while staying
cool and comfortable. 1. Homemade popsicles. Get the entire family involved in making homemade popsicles -- a
sweet treat that can be much healthier than the storebought variety, depending on what ingredients you include. Consider pineapple chunks, coconut shavings, berries, lime juice, kiwi, yogurt and other fresh flavors for a delicious, nutrientpacked way to cool down on hot summer nights. 2. Get on the water. Keep cool with outdoor water activities. Whether you’re doing something active like kayaking and swimming or just lazing on the river for a day of tubing, be sure you have the right tools onhand, like the WSD-F30 Pro Trek Smart Outdoor Watch, which is water-resistant up to 50 meters and includes apps for activities like swimming and surfing. 3. At mealtime, select items like gazpacho or smoothies and opt for snacks that have a high-water content, like watermelon, cucumbers and apples. 4. Dress right. The fabrics and colors of your summer wardrobe can make a big difference in the way you feel. Stick to light, loose garments or tech fabrics specifically designed to wick moisture. 3 Ways to Make the Most of Summer Produce
Always clean fruits and vegetables to remove pesticides, wax and soil. By Desert Star Staff Summer can be all too fleeting, but one of the best ways to ensure you make the most of the season is by enjoying the generous harvest of fruits and vegetables it brings. Here are three simple ways to make the most of summer produce: Get Produce at Its Peak: Produce tastes best when enjoyed during its peak season. Before shopping,
check produce guides to see what’s at its peak near you. A few easy ways to be sure you’re getting the cream of the crop are to join a CommunitySupported Agriculture (CSA) group, visit a farmer’s market and to simply look for the local label at your supermarket. In a culinary rut? Because CSA members don’t always have the option of selecting the exact items they receive, a subscription is a particularly good idea for those with
By Desert Star Staff CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A nature group in North Carolina is leading hikes and other outdoor activities this summer for people of color. Ali Steele, along with a few friends, started Issa Vibe Adventures a few years ago, when they realized there weren’t many outdoor groups for people of color. Steele says, despite wanting to experience nature, people of color may not have the opportunity to explore North Carolina’s pristine mountains, hiking trails and waterways in a welcoming space. “I believe there are a lot of great opportunities in North Carolina,” says Steele. “When it comes to POC – People of Color – we lack the knowledge of what’s available to us, because we feel like it’s a stereotype that we’re not
supposed to be there, or we’re not supposed to be involved.” A 2016 poll by New America Media and the Next 100 Coalition surveyed 900 African-American, Latino and Asian Pacific-American voters, and found 57% said they had visited national public lands. Respondents also said a major barrier is lack of knowledge – not knowing where state or national parks are, how to access them, or cost. Steele says first-time participants often come away with the profound experience of connecting with nature. “I always like the ‘wow factor’ from people,” says Steele. “They just are amazed by the views; they’re amazed by the access to come and participate in something like that for free; they are just amazed that they haven’t
adventurous spirits looking to expand their horizons. Be Safe: In your efforts to feed your family nutritious produce this summer, be mindful that many fruits and vegetables contain contaminants like pesticides, wax and soil on their outer layer. While independent studies show that washing produce with water or bleach solution still leaves behind large traces of pesticides, there is now a better way
to protect your family. With just a spray and rinse, Arm & Hammer’s Fruit & Vegetable Wash safely eliminates more than 90 percent of residue from the commonly used pesticide thiabendazole, when used as directed -- four times better than water alone. Made with pure and simple ingredients like Arm & Hammer baking soda, water, salt and lemon oil; and free of harsh chemicals, it’s easy to stock your kitchen with it and make it a part of meal prep. For more information, as well as cleaning tips, visit armandhammercleans.com. Use it Up: Don’t let any produce go to waste. Here are five fun uses for fruit and vegetables: • Fruit popsicles: Chop fruit into small chunks and mix with juice and even a bit of honey. Pour the mixture into a popsicle mold and freeze. You’ll have a delicious, healthful snack for later. • Fruit or veggie kebabs: The grill is not just for burgers and dogs. Make veggie skewers using mushrooms,
zucchini, green peppers and onions. For a light dessert, grill pears and peaches to be eaten on their own or topped with a bit of ice cream. • Pesto: Go beyond the classic basil recipe to get creative with your pesto sauces. From cilantro to spinach to mint, many of summer’s richest green herbs and vegetables make great stand-ins. • Cold soups: The weather may be hot, but that doesn’t mean you need to put soup on the back burner -- or any burner at all. From gazpacho to borscht served chilled, you can cool down with soup this summer. • Preserves: Certain fruits -- such as strawberries -- can technically be found any time of year, but are absolutely unparalleled in summer. Capture that magic for the months ahead by turning your favorite fruits into jams. With a bit of planning, you can thoroughly enjoy the vast array of fruits and vegetables harvested during the summer months. StatePoint

WITH LADY BEVERLY COHN
“Anne” – A Re-Imagined Concept on the Iconic “The Diary of Anne Frank”
Timothy P. Brown (The Publisher) and Ava Lalezarzadeh (Anne Frank) who, in this version, lives to tell the tale. Photo: Michael Lamont What can you say about Anne Frank, one of the most famous people of the last century, that hasn’t already been said? Her diary, “The Diary of Anne Frank,” contains the ruminations of a young German Jewish girl who went into hiding in Amsterdam in 1944 with her family and friends desperate to escape the Nazi slaughter of Jews. Living in cramped quarters for two years, this energetic young lady kept her sanity by writing to “Dear Kitty” in her diary every day, recording her hopes, fears, dreams, philosophy, and even her optimistic outlook, as well notes on the dawning of her sexual awakening. As recorded history has shown us, the Nazis eventually found the hiding place and everyone was arrested and carted off to concentration camps where Anne and her sister Margo died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen camp just several weeks before the Allies liberated the camps. Her father Otto Frank, the only surviving member of the family, posthumously published his daughter’s incisive wit, witticisms, and observations contained in her diary in 1947. First printed in Dutch, and subsequently translated into 67 languages, this slim book has sold over 31 million copies. A play, based on Anne’s diary, made its Broadway debut in October 1955 and ran for 717 performances, winning a Pulitzer Prize. Subsequently, it was made into a film directed by George Stevens, winning three Academy Awards, including the Best Supporting Actress nod going to Shelley Winters, who donated her Oscar to the Anne Frank Museum. The film is listed as eighteenth in AFI’s Top100 of the most inspiring American films. So, I’ll pose that question again: What can you say about Anne Frank that hasn’t already

been said? In an attempt to alter the famous narrative, “Anne,” currently on stage at the Museum of Tolerance’s Pelz Theatre, is a fantasized interpretation written by Jessica Durlacher and Leon de Winter, based on Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl adapted by Nick Blaemire. Directed by Eve Brandstein, in this version, Anne (Ava Lalezarzadeh) survives the concentration camp and is now a young lady in her twenties determined to get her story published. She meets with a publisher (Timothy P. Brown) who is interested in her experience. With the ensuing action sticking very closely to the original text as penned by Anne, he silently observes the events unfolding on stage replicating the life and times as experienced by the people co-existing in that infamous hiding place. The ensemble does a credible acting job in bringing

these characters to life. The cast consists of Rob Brownstein as Anne’s dad Otto, Andrea Gwynnel as Edith Frank, Marnina Schon as Margot Frank, Aylam Orian as Hermann van Pels, and Mary Gordon Murray as Mrs. van Pels and Miep, the good Samaritan who provides the group with food and hope. Tony DeCarlo also plays multiple roles, with Kevin Matsumoto playing Peter van Pels, the young boy with whom Anne falls in love. Technically, given the limited space and production budget, Desma does an excellent job with her set design depicting the Frank family home in Amsterdam and the Annex hiding place where the inhabitants try to live some semblance of a normal life. Other production values consist of Lighting Design by Ian James, Derek Christiansen’s Projection & Sound Design, and Florence Kemper
Bunzel’s Costume Design. This June, Anne Frank would have celebrated her 90th birthday. Just think what the world would have benefitted from her talent had she survived. Just remember also about what 6,000,000 murdered Jews could have contributed to humanity. With the world Jewish population at around 13.3 million, almost close to half-life is divided between America and Israel, which has become a world leader in such fields as science, technology, medicine, chemistry, physics, agriculture, and water conservation.* Today, the mighty “Never Again” battle cry has tiny cracks in it given the escalation of antiSemitic acts being committed around the world and at home, sprouting from the explosive, divisive political climate permeating our country. We need not look any further than “The Diary of Anne Frank” to
be reminded of the potentially catastrophic consequences of singling out a group of people and making them “the enemy of the people.” *Israel’s top 45 greatest inventions of all time | ISRAEL21c New Israeli Cancer Vaccine Triggers Response In 90% Of Cancer. “ANNE” Pelz Theatre Simon Wiesenthal Center 9786 West Pico Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90035 Sundays: 3:00 pm & 7:00 pm Mondays: 8:00 pm Closing: Monday, July 22, 2019iesenthal Plaza General Admission: $40 Seniors: $25, Students: $20 Family Pack: $100 (two adults and up to three children) 310.772.2505 or museumoftolerance.com

Entertaining Camp Comedy Musical “Ruthless”
Jaci Davis, Robbie Wayne, Dana Adkins, Lizzie Schmelling, Christine Tringali Nunes, Leanna Rodgers. Photo by Mike Thomas By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Desert Rose playhouse of Rancho Mirage premieres a glitzy, glamourous, hilarious musical comedy production of the campy homage to Hollywood’s tortured, driven, divas of celluloid and of Broadway who would do “anything” to get that perfect starring movie or Broadway role. “Ruthless”, written some 25 years ago by librettist and lyricist Joel Paley, with music by Marvin Laird, has been produced around the globe. Now the comedy romp has arrived in the Coachella Valley at Desert Rose Playhouse, directed by long time actor/director Loren Freeman. Freeman starred in the 1993 Los Angeles production as Sylvia St. Croix that ran for nine
months. His role is now being played by current Desert Rose Artistic Director Robbie Wayne. In musical comedy, the plots are thinly drawn, but energetically performed. The more over-the-top the performances are for farces and spoofs the more audiences enjoy the show. “Ruthless” is blessed with a cast of experienced farceurs and comedy actors who can sing, and singers who act and dance. What more does one need from a musical comedy in order to enjoy a hilarious evening in the theatre? “Ruthless”, is a story that chronicles eight-year old, gifted child actress Tina Denmark’s (Elizabeth Schmelling) rise in the world of show business. How Tina achieves her goal of stardom has echoes of the plays and movies of “The

Bad Seed”, “Kind Hearts and Coronets”, and “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder”, that serve as clues along Tina’s road to her goal of stardom at any cost. Ms. Schmelling is a mesmerizing, formidable and skillful performer with great comedy timing, as are all of her co-stars. Robbie Wayne stars as uber-agent Sylvia St. Croix who guides the career of young Tina, is hiding something. Shakespeare also made a career of hiding information and look how he turned out. Christine Tringall Nunes, cleverly and neatly plays Tina’s Stepford Wives-liked mother, who also harbors secrets and desires (in comedy, secrets are a must to keep until the eleven o’clock number). Miss Thorn, (a wonderful Dana Adkins) who runs the
acting academy attended by Tina, displays Adkins’ terrific comedy acting chops that we have missed in the desert theatre scene over the last several years. Jaci Davis as Lita Encore, brings her outstanding Ethel Merman voice impression as Mama Rose from “Gypsy” (at the Palm Canyon Theatre, with her co-star Elizabeth Schmelling, as Gypsy Rose Lee) is a joy to watch. Leanna Rodgers as Louise/ Eve, brings her energy and passion to both roles with outstanding timing. I mention the timing gifts of this solid ensemble because timing can’t be taught. Either one has it or one doesn’t. And his cast definitely has it! But no spoiler alerts from me. Audiences will just have to come and see this fun show for themselves.
In the technical and creative department led by director Freeman, “Ruthless” features a colorful, functional set design by Bruce Weber, who also designed the gorgeous costumes with assistants Rusty Waters and Ruth Braun. Lighting Designer Phil Murphy once again cleverly gives the performers lighting that shows them at their best. Sound Designer Adrian Niculescu, provides the sound that Board operator Miguel Gomez executes. Please Note: there are multiple gunshots fired a various points during the production. Steven Smith is the Musical Director. “Ruthless”, is fun-filled musical production that performs at the Desert Rose Playhouse in Rancho Mirage through July 14th. It’s a must see production!
5 Delicious Low-Carb Recipes Perfect for a Cookout
By Desert Star Staff Food on the grill, carb-loaded side dishes and high-sugar desserts are at the center of most seasonal cookouts. But this doesn’t mean you need to avoid those countless neighborhood barbecues to ensure you stay on track with your healthy lifestyle. Courtney McCormick, manager of Clinical Research & Nutrition for South Beach Diet, recommends these five lower-carb recipes that are great to bring along to any cookout.
• Shredded Chicken Chili: Just toss some chicken, beans, tomatoes and a combination of chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and oregano in your slow cooker and let that magic machine do all the work. Six hours later, you’ll have perfectly cooked chicken and plenty of flavorful fixings for fewer calories than a chicken prepared in a sugary or cheesy sauce. • Avocado Tuna www.desertstarweekly.com
Sandwiches: Mix lemon juice, avocado, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper in a small bowl and add canned tuna fish. Scoop onto a slice of whole grain bread with arugula, sliced cucumbers and red onions and you’ve got yourself a delicious sandwich to eat in place of that hamburger. • Skinny Shrimp Fajitas: You won’t miss the tortilla with this recipe! Combine shrimp, onion, bell pepper, olive oil and dry fajita spices such as chili powder, garlic, onion, cumin and paprika in a large bowl. Pour into a veggie basket or place on skewers and let the grill do the work for you. • Pesto Cilantro Dip: Bake walnuts at 275 degrees until golden brown, then chop cilantro, garlic, and walnuts in a food processor for about 25 seconds. With the machine running, pour olive oil in a steady stream. Add sour cream, lemon juice and salt. Pulse a few times to combine and you’re done! Serve with fresh veggies. “This recipe is quick and
simple,” says McCormick. “It contains minimal ingredients and it is packed with healthy fats. Plus, it keeps five days in the refrigerator and freezes for up to a month.” • South Beach Coleslaw: Coleslaw is a BBQ staple and this recipe for a lighter version of it is easy as 1-2-3! Doctors’ Orders: Kids Need a Dose of Daily Playtime
By Desert Star Staff At your child’s next checkup, don’t be surprised if your pediatrician recommends a healthy dose of play. Beyond the typical preventive care strategies for healthy child development, more pediatricians are recognizing play’s multifaceted benefits. Play is fundamentally important for developing 21st century skills, including social, emotional, language and cognitive skills, according to a recent clinical report by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends play for children to buffer toxic stress, build parental relationships and improve executive functioning. For these reasons, The Genius of Play is on a mission to enable parents to use the power of play to help raise a happier, healthier, and more productive next generation. To help ensure your kids get their daily dose of play, they are offering these fun ideas you can do together as a family. • Take me – “in” – to the ball game: With the long tube from a roll of wrapping paper as a bat and a balloon as a ball, you can safely play “baseball” indoors. Simply designate four pieces of furniture or other markers as bases and you’re ready to go. A great game for kids 4 years and up, it’s also a useful way to build cognitive skills, improve hand-eye coordination and, most importantly, have fun indoors. Is the sun shining? Take the fun to the backyard, with a real T-ball or softball set and use trees, bird houses and other markers as bases. • Worlds of imagination: Kids are not yet able to express their emotions as adults would. But when they create imaginary scenarios during play, they can act out their current emotional states, which in turn helps them learn to express and regulate their feelings. Through the use of toys such as dolls, action figures and playsets, children are able to express emotions like fear, frustration, anger or aggression, in situations they control, as well as build empathy and understanding. • It’s no cake walk: Get some exercise while building social skills. Show children how to walk like crabs: hands and feet on the floor, stomach facing up. See if they can balance something on their stomachs, such as a bag of beans, while they move. To make it competitive, have everyone race to a marked finish line. Or, organize a relay race to encourage teamwork and cooperation. • Puzzle it out: Brainteasers, puzzles and strategybased games are not just good old-fashioned fun, they strengthen critical thinking skills by facilitating a child’s

ability to strategize and focus. From jigsaw puzzles to fast-paced board games with buzzers and egg timers, such types of play sharpen children’s planning skills and lengthen their attention spans. And, when children are faced with a problem during play, the situation can test their reasoning and judgment -and ability to find a solution. For more play ideas as well as information about the benefits of play, visit TheGeniusofPlay.org. Make life more fun by creating time for play every day and encouraging more of it. Artist: The Rolling Stones Title: Bridges To Bremen (Eagle Vision) You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones Tell me more: With the Rolling Stones having just embarked on their highlyanticipated “No Filter Tour” (which arrives in Southern California in late August), fans might want to catch up on the British band’s legacy and unequaled discography via the newly-released “Bridges to Bremen.” Available on digital, DVD + 2CD, Blu-ray + 2CD, triple vinyl and digital audio, the multi-format release chronicles the band’s Sept. 2, 1998 performance in Bremen, Germany. Performing before a relatively-intimate crowd of 40,000 fans, the Stones’ 155-minute concert was filled with favorites and rarities all offered up with persuasion and firepower. Dipping back to their early ‘60s to get the concert started, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Let’s Spend The Night Together” provide a one-two punch. “Gimme Shelter” features some of Mick Jagger’s strongest vocals of the set, and that turn is enhanced by Lisa Fisher’s high-reaching vocals. Standouts keep comin. A rocking “Paint It Black,” freewheeling “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It),” heady “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and celebrative “Brown Sugar” are among the cuts that help make this title something special. As if that wasn’t enough, there are four bonus performances from a concert in Chicago as part of that same tour – great versions of “Rock and a Hard Place,” “Under My Thumb,” “All About You” and “Let It Bleed.” Information: eagle-rock.com. another fantastic album. The Alarm’s stellar “Sigma” (set for release on June 28) bristles, soars and flat out rocks with a collection of heartfelt and infectious originals that equal the band’s best efforts from the ‘80s and ‘90s. “Blood Red Viral Black” finds the Alarm joined by legendary Cult lead guitarist Billy Duffy for a fiery opening. The U2-flavored “Brighter Than The Sun” finds Peter’s incredible voice offering up the probing verses in a low baritone; the dramatic choruses are marked by his voice lifting to the heavens with power and fervency. The mid tempo and introspective “Time” is one of the album’s standouts with Peters powerfully noting our time here is short and it’s best to make each moment count. Original Alarm lead guitarist Dave Sharp returns for a earnest plea for world peace via the luxurious “Equals.” The album closes out with a reprise of the gorgeous “Two Rivers,” the track that launched 2018’s fantastic “Equals” (which was the Alarm’s first new album in eight years). If you have lost touch with the Alarm or simply need an introduction to the troupe, listen to both “Sigma” and “Equals,” and make plans to catch the band when they tour the U.S. this summer. Report Spotlights Challenges Facing LGBT Coloradans By Desert Star Staff DENVER – Colorado’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents face unfair and avoidable challenges when it comes to financial stability, housing, mental health and substance use issues, according to a new issue brief from the Colorado Health Foundation. Rita Lee, an associate professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, says the report’s findings spotlight significant disparities in health outcomes. “They are at increased risk for mental health issues like depression, anxiety, increased risk for suicide,” she states. “They are more likely to report overall poorer health compared to the general population.” Even in Colorado’s strong economy, 42% of LGBT residents say they’re worse off financially than a year ago, and nearly 6-in-10
worry they’ll lose their homes because they can’t pay their rent or mortgage, compared with just 25% of their peers. Nearly half of LGBT Coloradans said they or a family member couldn’t access mental health services when they needed it. Clinical psychologist Sarah Burgamy says when LGBT people are rejected by family or feel unsupported at work, they can develop a negative view of themselves and the future, which can lead to a sense of hopelessness. She says LGBT people also experience increased rates of stress compared with the general population. “They experience marginalization and prejudice and bias that non-LGBT people don’t experience,” she explains. “So we’re already walking around with the stressors that everyone else experiences in day-to-day life, but now
A 2018 survey of 1,800 Coloradans found LGBT Coloradans experience increased rates of stress compared with the general population. (Pixabay) we’ve upped the ante.” Lee says stigma remains a barrier for accessing medical and mental health care. She maintains additional education starting in medical school would help
mitigate bias, and get health professionals up to speed on the LGBT population’s specific medical needs. “They need to be trained on how to communicate effectively with LGBT patients
in a way that is inclusive and doesn’t assume that somebody is straight or heterosexual or assumes that they have a particular gender identity,” she states.
abortions,” she relates. In the early 1990s, Kentucky had nine abortion clinics. It is now one of seven states with only one provider. That facility, located in Louisville, has recently been at the forefront of a legal battle involving a law, passed in 2017 and signed by Gov. Matt Bevin, mandating that doctors in Kentucky show patients an ultrasound and describe it in detail before performing an abortion. The American Civil Liberties Union argues the legislation violates doctors’ free speech rights. With “The Abortion Monologues,” Sexton says anyone, regardless of her or his views on the procedure, is welcome to work with the production to share individual stories. “We did have a story of regret this year,” Sexton states. “She was an international student that studied here in Kentucky,
and she became pregnant. She actually wanted to have her baby 100%, but her family basically forced her into having an abortion. “She mentioned in her story that she’s still pro-choice. Even though she didn’t want to have an abortion, she supports other people’s rights to have it, because abortion is illegal in her country.” Because the rhetoric surrounding abortion has become increasingly fierce and contentious, Sexton says people often forget that women who have chosen to have an abortion are women they know – their daughters, mothers and aunts and even grandmothers. She says one of this season’s most powerful stories comes from a granddaughter who wanted to tell the story of her grandmother, who died from a botched self-abortion more than half a century ago.
Theatric Performance Aims to Reduce Abortion Stigma for KY Women
Cast and crew of the Kentucky storytelling project “The Abortion Monologues.” (Jess Wren) By Desert Star Staff LEXINGTON, Ky. – A grassroots storytelling production focused on women’s experiences with abortion performs its final show of the season Thursday night in Lexington. A few years ago, when Kentucky was left with only
one abortion provider after a Lexington clinic closed, Stacie Sexton started “The Abortion Monologues,” a theaterbased storytelling project that aims to lessen the stigma for women who wanted to share stories related to choosing – or not choosing – to terminate a pregnancy.
“You know, this is a storytelling project, but it became even more important to tell these stories and talk about the fact that access had been reduced to one clinic – one clinic serving the entire state – because the Planned Parenthoods in Kentucky don’t perform
Title IX Complaint Takes Aim at Transgender Teen Athletes By Desert Star Staff HARTFORD, Conn. – A conservative religious law firm has filed a civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Education on behalf of three Connecticut girls who maintain that allowing transgender girls to play school sports on girls’ teams is a violation of Title IX. The complaint singles out two girls in particular – Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood – saying that because they were assigned male at birth,

they shouldn’t be allowed to play on the girls’ teams. Dan Barrett, legal director at the ACLU of Connecticut, says the complaint and some of the media narrative surrounding it have only perpetuated stereotypes. “This complaint mirrors, I think, some of the transphobic advocacy that’s been done in other arenas – you know, public access to bathrooms, where we were told without any evidentiary basis that people would
use the opportunity to go into the bathroom to prey on other people,” he states. “It makes no sense.” Barrett says while the complaint isn’t harmless, he doesn’t think it will result in a policy change. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference’s current policy is to follow the state’s anti-discrimination law, which says students should be treated in school according to the gender June 26, 2019
with which they identify. The complaint says allowing transgender students on a sports team could take championships and scholarships away from other girls. It was drafted by the Alliance for Defending Freedom, a group that has posted what Barrett calls misleading statements on social media, such as: “Female athletes challenge Connecticut policy that abolishes girls-only sports.”
Barrett says he worries that complaints like this could lead to the government policing gender identity. “Trans girls are girls, for all purposes that the government has any business worrying about,” he stresses. Barrett adds that if a policy change were to come from this complaint, it would mean transgender girls and boys would be banned from playing on the girls’ and boys’ teams respectively – forcing them to either deny who they are, or forgo participation in school sports altogether. www.desertstarweekly.com

Oregon GOP trolls Democrats with ‘siege’ of Capitol Building
By Desert Star Staff The Oregon GOP official Twitter account has been mocking Democrats as Republican senators avoided a legislative session to sabotage a climate bill. Police was ordered to bring in rebel lawmakers amid protests.
The bizarre political drama in the Beaver state centers around House Bill 2020, which would reduce fossil fuel emissions by 2050. Democrats hold an 18-12 majority in the State Senate, but they need 20 people for a quorum to pass legislation. And 11
republicans went into hiding on Thursday, thus disrupting every session since then. While the state police are searching for senators at the request of the governor, the official GOP Twitter account has been provoking a heated online row.
“Heavily armed militia lays siege to Oregon’s Capitol as Senate Democrats cower in fear,” read the viral message. While the state police are searching for senators at the request of the governor, the official GOP Twitter account has been provoking a heated online row. “Heavily armed militia lays siege to Oregon’s Capitol as Senate Democrats cower in fear,” read the viral message. Ubiquitous Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez(D-NY) joked that this is the way Republicans deal with “Sunday Scaries,” and pledged to find them a “therapist.” The Oregon GOP doubled down later with a tweet showing children at the steps of the capitol, saying there were “more scary militia people” (sic) and it was “no wonder Senate Democrats left.”
Protests against the legislation that would limit carbon emissions in the state and allow companies to exchange emission “allowances” continued on Sunday as rural communities are concerned that it would drive fuel prices up and hurt small businesses, farmers and loggers. The next legislative session is on Monday, but there’s no indication that Republican lawmakers would show up. Tensions between the coastal and inland communities are not new in Oregon. Back in 2016, land rights activists occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in protest at the federal government’s mistreatment of landowners. Nevada ranchers Ammon and Ryan Bundy led the group that took over the refuge, kicking off a 40-day standoff with Oregon and federal police.
Tennessee Opioid Prescriptions On the Decline By Desert Star Staff NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Opioid prescriptions in Tennessee dropped by about one-third between 2013 and 2018, according to new data released by the Tennessee Medical Association. The figures show a steady decrease in the numbers of opioid prescriptions filled statewide – from more than 8.5 million in 2013, to almost 5.7 million last year. Dr. Elise Denneny, president of the Tennessee Medical Association, says while the reduction is a step in the right direction, state health professionals and lawmakers should be focusing on the bigger picture. “Opioid use disorder is just a symptom of what
plagues our society,” she states. “We still have a problem with alcohol in our nation, and it’s even greater.” In 2017, Tennessee legislators passed some of the most restrictive opioid supply laws in the country. Senate Bill 2257 put restrictions on dosages, and requires dispensers to check the state’s Controlled Substance Monitoring Database prior to handing out opioids the first time a patient fills a prescription. The database is used to spot over-prescribing and make it harder for patients to “doctor shop” for drugs. Denneny points out that many physicians are beginning to advocate for approaches to pain treatment that don’t
involve highly addictive drugs. “Physicians definitely have treatment of pain on the radar,” she states. “There’s not just one way to treat pain, because not all pain is the same kind of pain. So, multi-modality
approaches for management of pain is really important.” Some doctors say they feel pressured to give in to patients’ demands for immediate pain relief. However, one study published earlier this year
found that U.S. doctors who received direct payments from opioid manufacturers were more likely to prescribe opioids than doctors who did not.

Addressing Chronic Pain Amidst a National Opioid Crisis By Desert Star Staff Chronic pain is among the most prevalent and debilitating medical conditions in the U.S. and opioids are the most commonly prescribed class of medications that are frequently relied on for the management of chronic pain. The high risk for dependence on these drugs and their frequent abuse has results in a national epidemic.

World Premiere Thriller “Mysterious Circumstances”
Hugo Armstrong, Helen Sadler, Alan Tudyk & Leo-Marks. Photo by Jeff Lorch By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association Sherlock Holmes, the world’s greatest fictitious private consulting detective sprang from the fertile brain of English writer Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. Two years later he was knighted becoming the darling of London society and a literary icon in the English-speaking world. Conan Doyle by today’s standards became the equivalent of a Rock Star back in the Victorian era of England. He created the brilliant, but quirky, sleuth Sherlock Holmes, who along with his friend and biographer Dr. John Watson, solved the thorniest of mysteries employing Holmes’ extraordinary powers of observation coupled with forensic science and the logic of deduction. Scotland Yard scoffed at first but never-theless welcomed his analysis of the crime scene when the police hired him to consult on especially tough cases. So convincing was Conan Doyle’s creation at the turn of the 20th century both Holmes and Watson were believed to be real people. So much so that the city of London actually turned Holmes’ fictional living quarters at 221- B Baker Street into a physical replica in a building located at 221-B Baker Street; due to the demand of tourists wanting to visit the famous detective’s home. The London County Council wisely obliged by recreating the Holmes and Watson apartment as described in Conan Doyle’s stories down to the last detail; turning a tidy profit in the process over the years The story may be apocryphal but when I lived for three years in London in the early ‘50’s. I was often asked where it was located. Maybe that’s where Walt Disney got the idea for Disneyland and America’s love affair with nostalgia. But I digress. Playwright Michael Mitnick was inspired by the 2004 www.desertstarweekly.com
New Yorker magazine article “Mysterious Circumstances: The strange death of a Sherlock Holmes fanatic” by David Grann. Speculation ran high as to what caused the death of Richard Lancelyn Green, considered the world’s largest collector of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia and a recognized scholar on all thing Holmesian. Green was found dead from asphyxiation on the floor his London apartment in 2004. The police could not establish any foul play, yet they have kept the “Richard Lancelyn Green” file open as of this date. The Geffen’s producing artistic director Matt Shakman, in collaboration with playwright Mitnick, has crafted a play-with-in-a-play format employing a fictitious narrative concerning the mysterious death of a real person. It’s not easy to pull off one of the theatre’s long standing conventions: the play-within-a-play format. Non-linear plays place larger expectations on audiences, thanks to shorter attention spans these days. Also, it doesn’t help that focusing on the ‘story’ now must compete with projection designs and other technical wiz bang components that make up todays’ productions. The cast under the deft direction of Matt Shakman is universally solid. Seven actors portray multiple roles based on true events that occurred in two different time periods in London; 1894 and 2004. However, quick scene changes, lightning fast changes both in costume and new identities amid sometime brief scenes has the feel of a TV episode rather than a theatre presentation. Alan Tudyk portrays Sherlock Holmes in the back story scenes and as Richard Lancelyn Green in the 21st century time period. As Sherlock Holmes he brings the brusque, superior confidence and assurance that one expects from “Sherlock Holmes”. As Green we see a more measured

individual, scholarly at times but obsessed with the life of Sherlock’s creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It’s nicely done. Ramiz Monsef as Dr. Watson, brings a fresh approach as the crimesolving partner and friend of Holmes. Other stand outs include Helen Saddler as Touie, Dame Jean and others, Hugo Armstrong, portrays the American, plus multiple characters, Austin Durant as Conan Doyle, plays Chief Investigator, and others, Leo Marks portrays Superintendent, Private Eye, Dentist and others, and John Bobek as Chester, and other roles complete this stellar cast. Mitnick’s writing for me is the weakest part of the production. I know it’s picky

but details do matter. For example, it’s a bit jarring and anachronistic to hear a Brit describe a time period as ‘two weeks’, rather than the more commonly used expression “fortnight”, especially in the Victorian-era scenes. The creative team led by director Shakman almost unbalances his production with too many technical touches: projection designs, directorial choices in staging the production from a richly textured set design created by Brett J. Banakis, to the outstanding and spot-on costume designs of E.B. Brooks. The Lighting design by Elizabeth Harper lends authenticity to both time periods. The Projection Designs are by Kaitlyn Pietras. I still remember Mr.
Shakman’s impressive production and direction of the comedy “Bad Jews” at the Geffen in June of 2015. Now, he is the artistic director of the Geffen and I believe he is the best choice to lead the theatre. Besides no one hits a home run every time at bat. “Mysterious Circumstances” is an intriguing puzzle worthy of a case that even Sherlock Holmes himself would probably enjoy, were he to be called upon to assist in helping Scotland Yard solve the mysterious death of Richard Lancelyn Green. “Mysterious Circumstances” now performing at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles runs through July 14, 2019.
