By Desert Star Staff The first Democratic debate saw 10 largelyinterchangeable candidates square off to trade platitudes in a free-for-all plagued with technical difficulties, mysterious shifts into Spanish, and belligerent posturing. President Donald Trump didn’t seem too worried about being unseated in 2020 by any of the ten candidates duking it out on the first night of the Democratic primary debates in Miami, leveling a characteristically acerbic tweet in lieu of detailed analysis. Others declared him the winner of the debate.
Republican senator Lindsey Graham gave a sarcastic thanks to NBC for the technical difficulties that forced the station to go to a commercial early, and even the left-leaning Daily Show poked fun at the forgettable showing of a large chunk of the candidates, showing them turning into, well, a large chunk. Summer Bees are Buzzing, But for How Long?
The rusty patched bumblebee, Minnesota’s new official state bee, has lost 90% of its historical range and experienced a dramatic population decline. (nrdc.org) By Desert Star Staff ST. PAUL, Minn. – One out of every three bites of food you eat is dependent on pollinators doing their jobs – and threats to those pollinators
are at an all-time high. About 400 native pollinator species live in Minnesota, including the rusty patched bumblebee, recently named the official state bee. For decades, it was
one of the most commonly seen bumblebees in the Midwest, but it’s now limited to only a few spots, mostly around urban areas, including the Twin Cities. Daniel Raichel, a staff
attorney for the Pollinator Initiative of the Natural Resources Defense Council, says the main reasons bee populations are declining globally can be traced to pesticides, loss of habitat and climate change. “We’re recording the highest winter losses for honeybees ever, and those are an indicator species, right?” he points out. “That’s kind of the canary in the coal mine.” Raichel says upwards of 75% of plants require animal pollinators, such as bees or butterflies. In an effort to boost their populations, Minnesota’s governor signed a law this month that provides nearly a million dollars for the Lawns to Legumes program to pay homeowners up to 75% of the costs of converting their turf lawns to native pollinator-friendly habitat. In Minnesota, $60 million
of agriculture products depend on pollinators. But Raichel says the widespread use of new pesticides known as neonicotinoids or neonics, has proved lethal to bees since their introduction around 2006. “That’s almost exactly the same time that you see widespread use of these neonic pesticides across the country, and that’s use in agriculture, home gardens, use on golf courses,” he states. The European Union has banned the use of three neonics for outdoor use, while France has banned five. The rusty patched bumblebee was the first bumblebee to be designated as an endangered species but remains under threat as the U.S. Interior Department continues efforts to weaken protections for listed species.
Reclaiming the Big Oyster By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – The efforts to restore shellfish to New York Harbor and Long Island have made real progress, but there’s still a long way to go. Long before New York City was The Big Apple, it was known as The Big Oyster. New York Harbor once had more than 200,000 acres of oyster reefs and Long Island was a major source of clams and oysters. But by the early 1900s, the New York Harbor oysters were gone, the reefs were dredged or covered with silt and Long Island shellfish were seriously depleted. Then in 2017, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a $10.4 million project to restore shellfish populations. According to Chris Gobler, chair of Coastal Ecology and Conservation at Stony Brook University, that marked a turning point. “With the launch of that
program, it took the whole region from a position of recognizing a problem to devising and implementing a solution,” he states. This month, the restoration project reached a milestone with approximately half of the 1.6 million adult clams planned for the Bellport Bay shellfish sanctuary stocked. In New York Harbor, there’s an ambitious effort to restore 1 billion oysters by 2035. Pete Malinowski, executive director of the Billion Oyster Project, says that working with a specialized high school on Governors Island they’ve restored 28.5 million oysters so far. “We only have 971.5 million oysters to go before we reach our billion,” he states. “So, we’re making good progress, but we need to restore oysters at a much larger scale in
order to reach our goal.” Malinowski says the Billion Oyster Project has the ability to restore 25 million oysters a year. But while the governor’s support has helped the project, the scale of restoration has been limited by state regulations. Clams and oysters also have a tremendous cumulative impact on water quality. Each one filters several gallons of water each day. Aaron Kornbluth, an officer with The Pew Charitable Trusts, notes that New York has emerged as a national leader in restoring shellfish populations. “The next step is to bring together all of the various groups that are working on this to scale up and achieve the longterm goal of self-sustaining wild shellfish,” he states. Kornbluth says when shellfish restoration-efforts are complete and with a boost
By Desert Star Staff SALEM, Ore. – Could the death of the cap-andtrade bill in the Oregon Senate be an opportunity for the state to design stronger action on climate change? Senate Republicans haven’t returned to Salem, even after Democratic Party Senate President Peter Courtney announced the proposal no longer had the votes to pass. But the measure has faced attacks not only from the right. Some groups on the left have been critical as well.
Jim Walsh, an energy policy analyst for the advocacy group Food and Water Watch, says a marketbased approach that still allows pollution through the use of offsets and other policies isn’t good enough to reduce carbon emissions. “Under the cap-andtrade program in Oregon, we would have had a number of dirty energy policies including carbon-capture sequestration and the use of bio-fuels that would have extended the use of fossil fuels and other dirty, polluting
industries,” he points out. Walsh says sound policy would reduce carbon emissions at the source and halt plans for new fossil fuel infrastructure in the state. Supporters of the capand-trade bill say it would raise money for the state to transition away from fossil fuels. Opponents on the right say costs would be passed on to Oregonians and damage the economy. Since the start of the legislative session, groups such as the Center for Sustainable Economy, OPAL Environmental
The oyster populations from Maine to Florida has shrunk to less than 10% of its historic size. (nulovetoyo/Adobe Stock) from oyster farming, New York will be able to reclaim its title as oyster capital of the world.
Support for this reporting was provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts.
Justice Oregon and Unite Oregon have argued that lawmakers should focus on an Oregon Green New Deal rather than cap-and-trade. They say a Green New Deal would offer a chance at a transition that doesn’t disproportionately affect low-income communities and communities of color. Walsh says there’s evidence that California’s cap-and-trade program has led to greater emissions near disadvantaged communities because companies can pay to pollute.
“We don’t need to have pollution decisions come down to a balance sheet on a corporate ledger,” he states. “What we need is states to take steps forward to actually reduce emissions at the source and force those emissions down.” Walsh says the state should provide more support for the renewable energy sector, noting that the rapidly growing industry could be a source for jobs in manufacturing, technological development and energy efficiency.

’Mysterious Circumstances’ Unfold at the Geffen
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are fictional super sleuths brought to life by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. From 1887 to 1893 they were the primary characters in Sir Arthur’s detective novels which were overwhelmingly popular with readers. Then suddenly, Doyle decides to stop writing about Sherlock and Watson to focus on more substantial subjects like British history and poetry. Despite protests from his publisher, he kills off Holmes in “The Final Problem” published in 1893. With them dead, he would no longer

have to write about them. It is said that fans were so devastated by Sherlock’s death, they wore black armbands in mourning. However, after an eightyear hiatus, Doyle relented and wrote “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” a story that predated Sherlock’s death. After that, other novels were penned about the smart detective. “It was elementary” and satisfied a world of fans yet again. A future fan was Richard Lancelyn Green, considered one of the most exceptional scholars on Conan Doyle and his creations, Sherlock Holmes and Watson. The play “Mysterious Circumstances” at the Geffen, written by playwright Michael Mitnick and directed by Matt Shakman, focuses on Green’s obsession and his mysterious death. Was it a suicide, or was it murder? To this day, the case has not been solved.

inspired to write “Mysterious Circumstances” after reading David Gran’s 2004 article in the New Yorker about Richard Green’s death. Mitnik begins his play as two friends knock on Green’s door. When there is no answer, they enter and find Green’s body on the floor. The story intercuts from past to present as we learn about Doyle and his wife, Touie (Helen Sadler) who is dying but still maintains a happy outlook on life. Sadler also portrays every other woman in the play from Doyle’s now elderly daughter Dame Jean to Coroner Bartleby and a policewoman. There is a large cast of characters on stage, all brought to life by just seven actors. And just like Sherlock’s nemesis Moriarty, Green also has a potential foe in the form of an American Holmes scholar played by Hugo Armstrong. The American is certainly not a friend, but could he be a killer? At one point, Green can visit with Doyle’s daughter Jean who possess a chest that contains priceless Doyle memorabilia like letters and unpublished stories. She allows Green to look through the chest for a few minutes, then takes it away. She tells him she does not want family members to get ahold of the contents because they would auction off the items piece by piece to collectors for money. Instead, she intends to give everything to the British Museum. But after her death, it is announced that there will be an auction. Horrified Green works tirelessly to stop the sale. Could that be the reason he is murdered? Brett J. Barnakis designed the sets with lighting by Elizabeth Harper. Original music and sound design are by Jonathan Snipes with costumes created by E.B. Brooks. “Mysterious Circumstances” is playing at the Geffen Playhouse, 10886 Le Conte Ave, Los Angeles, through July 14. Phone (310) 208-5454.

By Desert Star Staff Whether it’s dance lessons, computer projects, art class or yoga, kids these days are busy bees. And while such activities are enriching and fun, experts say that many kids aren’t spending enough time doing something much simpler and every bit as important as structured programming: playing outdoors. “Finding time for the kids to play outside can be such a challenge for parents,” says Keri Wilmot, a pediatric occupational therapist and an expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org. “As a parent I worry about ‘stranger danger’ or whether my kids will be able to navigate social issues on their own.
Without spontaneity, playtime has lost some of it’s fun.” Outdoor play is necessary for healthy child development, according to The Genius of Play. The initiative, whose mission is to raise awareness about the importance of play and help parents make play a critical part of raising their kids, is sharing five benefits of unstructured outdoor playtime: • Physical Development: Research has shown that physically active kids tend to be leaner and healthier, while an inactive childhood can lead to a sedentary (and likely unhealthy) lifestyle in adulthood. Furthermore, physical play builds gross and fine motor skills necessary for success in school and beyond. Hanging
from the monkey bars, for instance, helps kids develop the hand muscles needed to grip a pencil. • Risk-Taking: Through outdoor play, children are given the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and try new things. While taking risks won’t always lead to success on the first try, moments like a first bike ride without training wheels, or the first trip down the big slide in the playground, are critical for building the confidence and resilience needed to pursue a future career, start a business, or handle life’s many challenges. • Social Skills: Childhood games played outdoors can help build social skills and teach kids to follow directions.
From games as simple as tag, to those with more complicated rules, like “Kick the Can,” “Capture the Flag,” and sports like soccer and basketball, communication, teamwork and other important social skills are developed during outdoor play. • Problem Solving: Children’s imaginations are often stimulated by the world around them. Being outside widens their horizons and can encourage kids to tap into their creativity in order to come up with solutions to challenges, such as learning how to build a sandcastle or figuring out how to climb up a jungle gym. • Reducing Stress: So much outdoor play involves physical activity, thrilling
moments and a sense of freedom, all of which can boost endorphins, helping to lower stress levels and reduce anxiety and depression. Interestingly, simply touching dirt when creating mud pies or digging for worms can be beneficial. According to a Bristol University study, certain types of “friendly” bacteria in soil have been found to activate the group of neurons that produce serotonin, which contributes to a feeling of well-being and happiness. So, don’t be afraid to let your kids get a bit dirty out there! For play ideas, expert advice and other play resources, visit TheGeniusOfPlay.org. Playtime is essential for children. To promote health, happiness and confidence, be sure some of it is spent outdoors. StatePoint
By Desert Star Staff The US Federal Aviation Administration has found some new problems with Boeing’s narrow-body 737 MAX line of passenger aircraft, which have been at the center of controversy following two suspiciously similar fatal crashes. The FAA identified additional “potential risks” that the aircraft manufacturing giant should address before the fourth-generation jet grounded in March could return to service, the agency told Reuters. The nature of this new alleged defect has not been revealed. It was discovered during a simulator test last week, according to some unnamed sources. “On the most recent issue, the FAA’s process is designed to discover and highlight potential risks. The FAA recently found a potential risk that Boeing must mitigate,” the FAA said in a statement. This is a new setback
for Boeing, which is now expected to delay a certification test flight of the 737 MAX until at least July 8. For now, the company only said that it is “working closely with the FAA to safely return the MAX to service.” The MAX is the newest iteration of the 737 design, which was originally introduced in the 1960s. Boeing found itself in hot water following two deadly crashes involving the planes, however, which claimed a total of 346 lives. Both the Lion Air crash in Indonesia and the Ethiopian Airlines crash were linked to the improper work of the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), designed to prevent the plane from stalling, which instead sent the aircraft into nosedive. Boeing later admitted that an ‘optional’ set of indicators it sells separately could potentially have helped
prevent the tragedies, but only 20 percent of the MAX jets had them. The company also did not alert FAA about the issue until the first crash,
even though it allegedly knew about it since 2017, when the MAX line was introduced. All 737 MAX aircraft were grounded internationally three
months ago, and Boeing was required to upgrade its onboard software a present a new system to safety watchdogs for re-certification.

Trump Hotel in Washington Charged Secret Service $200,000
NBC PS News Staff During the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, the Trump International Hotel in Washington charged the Secret Service more than $200,000 in taxpayer money, including a bill topping $30,000 for two days of use, according to expense documents obtained by NBC News. The documents, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request covering Secret Service expenditures, detail money the agency spent at the property from September 2016 to February 2018, which came to a total of $215,254. While the nature of the charges were not disclosed in the documents, the hotel five blocks from the White House has become a goto venue for Trump and his supporters for various events, including a fundraiser the president attended Tuesday for his re-election campaign. These type of events inevitably require Secret Service detail and heavy use of the property and food services to accommodate and feed personnel. The agency paid $33,638 for unspecified charges over two days in June, which coincided with Trump’s first re-election campaign fundraiser. Guests paid $35,000 a plate, according to The Washington Post. Other charges paid out by the Secret Service include a bill for $14,900 for two days in June 2017 and another for $11,475 for two days the next month, according to the documents obtained by NBC News. The Secret Service said in a statement Wednesday that it could not discuss costs or resources used to carry out its work. Trump’s decision to patronize his own property while holding office has raised red flags not just around an ethical conflict of interest, but also what some say is a violation of the Constitution’s emoluments clause, which bars federal officials from accepting benefits from foreign or state governments without congressional approval. Trump’s lawyers deny that the president has violated the emoluments clause, contending that the constitutional provision only bars compensation made in connection with services provided in his official capacity with a foreign or domestic government. Although Trump put his business holdings into a trust for the duration of his tenure in office, he still stands to gain from profits brought in by his various enterprises, including his hotel in Washington. According to Trump’s financial disclosure forms, the hotel generated revenue of over $40.8 million in 2018, up

from $40.4 million in 2017. The Trump Organization did not respond to a request for comment by NBC News. In addition to the Secret Service, several other federal agencies have incurred considerable expenses at Trump International Hotel. After sending FOIA requests to more than 70 government agencies, NBC News reported last August that almost $56,000 in taxpayer dollars was spent at the hotel between 2016 and 2017, more than $29,000 of which was paid by the Department of Defense. Almost $12,000 was spent by the Department of Agriculture, more than $9,000 by the Internal Revenue Service, and more than $1,700 by the General Services Administration, which oversees the lease with the Trump Organization. The Trump Organization,
including the Washington property, also appears to have taken in a significant amount from at least 22 foreign governments, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Cyprus. Trump promised to donate any profits from foreign governments, and the Trump Organization has sent $343,000 to the U.S. Treasury for 2017 and 2018. However, the organization did not release underlying numbers to support that figure. The questionable patronage by these outside governments is the subject of two pending federal lawsuits against the president for allegedly gaining from illegal foreign payments. On Tuesday, a federal judge greenlighted a lawsuit filed by 200 congressional Democrats that alleges Trump’s financial interests in his properties violates an anti-corruption
provision of the Constitution. Another pending lawsuit, filed by the attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia, argues that patrons’ desire to use Trump
International Hotel to curry favor with the president gives it an unfair advantage over competing businesses in Washington and Maryland. Source: NBC Palm Springs

educators and classified staff.” A UCLA study found that the ratio between white male students and teachers in California is 15-to-1. For black males, it is 54-to-1, 77-to-1 for Asian males and 114-to-1 for Latino males. The hearing is to convene at 10 a.m. at the State Capitol. The committee is expected to continue studying the issue and could propose legislation for next year to implement the report’s recommendations. Williams said a study from Johns Hopkins University found black students are more likely to graduate if they have even one black teacher. “In fact, having an AfricanAmerican teacher - for African American students and for other students is a benefit,” he said. The report also recommends training teachers and staff on racial equity and unconscious bias, and forming partnerships with trade unions to funnel kids

cultural appropriating (or “outreach”) and triggering some eye-rolling among spectators - especially the Spanish-speaking ones. One Twitter user joked that “if [Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth] Warren” - a.k.a. “Pocahontas - “rain dances, then the pandering will be complete tonight.” The candidates tried their best to sound tough without alienating antiwar voters, but some were better at it than others. Every candidate except New Jersey senator Cory Booker – who once told an AIPAC crowd that he and the Israeli lobbying group “text message back and forth like teenagers” – vowed to rejoin the Iran nuclear deal, while Hawaii congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard condemned the warmongering of Trump’s “chicken hawk” cabinet. Ohio congressman Tim Ryan insisted the US “must be engaged” in Afghanistan, even though he’d prefer to spend that money at home, because otherwise “the Taliban will grow.” When Gabbard pointed out that every country that had tried to “squash” the Taliban had failed, Ryan – who has spent 17 years in Congress – raised a few eyebrows with his response. “When we weren’t in [Afghanistan], they started flying planes into our buildings!” he declared. Gabbard pointed out that it was al-Qaeda, not the Taliban – but Ryan can be forgiven for making the same

mistake the entire US foreign policy establishment did. The biggest geopolitical threat to the US, according to the candidates? “Donald Trump,” Washington governor Jay Inslee declared, to raucous cheers. O’Rourke volunteered climate change, while Gabbard suggested nuclear weapons, and Booker hedged his bets by declaring both nuclear proliferation and climate change were scary. But the clear crowd favorite among the threats was Russia, which New York mayor Bill deBlasio
declared with a smirk “[has] been trying to undermine our democracy and they’ve been doing a pretty damn good job and we need to stop ‘em!” The crowd, most of whom had paid $4,500 for their seats, cheered wildly. According to Google, Gabbard was the winner of the debate, beating out every other candidate in search frequency. Booker came in a close second, while Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar and Maryland congressman John Delaney were tied for last place.
Several online polls, including at the Drudge Report, the Washington Examiner, Heavy. com, and NJ.com, also had Tulsi taking the top spot, averaging a sizable 30 to 40 percent of the vote.
