Senate and Assembly Reach Agreement on $30 Million Oasis Mobilehome Park
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, CA) This evening, both the Senate and Assembly budget committees agreed on the inclusion of Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia’s (D-Coachella) $30 million budget request to support the residents of Oasis Mobilehome Park to help resolve this urgent public health and housing crisis in the Eastern Coachella Valley. “The $30 million we requested to serve the residents of Oasis Mobilehome Park has been officially included in
both the Senate and Assembly budget proposals. This is a major feat, and we want to recognize Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability and all our local and statewide partners who lent their voices to this important cause. I especially want to credit the Oasis Mobilehome Park residents who have been their own best advocates defending their rights. We are very close and must continue our advocacy to bring these funds across the legislative finish line and sent to Governor Newsom
for a signature on the final state budget,” said Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia. “California is stepping up to support our regional housing solutions, including the severe public health and affordable housing concerns we are encountering in the Eastern Coachella Valley. The $30 million will address an urgent public health crisis, prevent homelessness, and provide access to safe, secure, and dignified housing

NFL Leads The Way on Mobile-Only Tickets By Desert Star Staff When the NFL season kicks off in September, the fans will be back, but the paper tickets won’t. The league is mandating that all tickets be digital for the 2021 season, codifying a shift that accelerated under the pandemic. Instituted as a safety measure, mobile ticketing also helps the league track the secondary market, cut down on fraud, and target fans for marketing purposes. The NFL is eager to maximize revenue after a $4 billion drop from $16 billion in 2019 to $12 billion last year. But, unfortunately, attendance dropped from 17 million to just 1.2 million, as well.
While the NFL may be the first league to require digital ticketing, the writing has been on the wall. • The universities of Michigan and Connecticut will exclusively use digital tickets with limited exceptions for their sporting events. • Many teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, and Tennessee Titans, are also going cashless at stadium concession stands. • Barclays Center recently unveiled a contactless shop in partnership with American Express in which fans can scan a card at the entrance and be charged for whatever items they walk out with. All of the digital the expansive data transactions allow for collection on fans.

Oral Care Tips for Parents by the Ages
good time to find a pediatric dentist for your child and schedule an appointment.
By Desert Star Staff Proper oral care is essential to overall wellness. Here are a few tips and strategies for each stage of your child’s development: Teething: Even before your child’s first tooth appears, good oral care matters. While some discomfort is associated
with teething, you can help alleviate it by being prepared. When it comes to teethers, look for smart designs, keeping in mind that a teether can only do its job if your baby can hold onto it. Check out new solutions, like the Not-Too-Cold-ToHold Teether, which features a handle that stays room temperature while the gel-
filled teethers are chilled to go to work. The teethers come in four specially designed shapes with different textures to massage and stimulate gums in the front and back and reach all new teeth types. The American Dental Association recommends a dental visit within six months of the appearance of a child’s first tooth, so this is also a
Babies and Toddlers: “It’s important to instill good habits at a young age. Even when your child still has a gummy smile, you can introduce the brushing gesture and oral hygiene habits with a toothbrush,” says Dr. Misee Harris, a pediatric dentist based in Arkansas. “One good option I like to recommend to parents is the Frida Baby GrowWith-Me Training Toothbrush Set because it’s designed specifically for this purpose with it’s triple angle bristles.” Dr. Harris points out that the set contains both a training toothbrush for babies to provide sore gum relief and basic brushing training, as well as a training toothbrush for toddlers that helps continue to build good brushing habits and nurture their growing independence with your help. to return to total capacity when the season starts.
getting little ones to enjoy and engage in oral hygiene,” according to Dr. Harris. Elementary-Aged Kids: By this age, kids should be well on their way to proper brushing techniques and oral care habits. Encourage them to keep up the good work by giving them a bit of control and independence. Let them select their own toothbrush and toothpaste, and help them create a routine that aligns with their dentist’s recommendations. This is also a good time to instill good nutrition habits, as this can play a big role in oral hygiene. Indeed, cavities are one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So try to make snacks and beverages with added sugars more of a special treat than part of your child’s daily diet. Also, be sure to include plenty of foods that build strong teeth and gums. Through each age and stage of your child’s development, you can play an important role in helping foster a healthy smile. *StatePoint

fans. In a normal year, its events generate more than $510 million annually for the Indiana economy. But even at 40% capacity for the 105th running — won by Brazilian driver Hélio Castroneves for his recordtying fourth title — the 500mile race always has a major economic impact on the city. • Speedway High School pulls in nearly $20,000 from parking fees on race day. • Airbnb hosts earned close to $750,000 in combined supplemental income from the 2019 race.
Hotels in the area are more or less completely booked surrounding the race. Last year’s purse for the race was reduced by 50%, with the winner Takuma Sato taking home $1.3 million. Castroneves pocketed $2 million on Sunday. “Great moment for everyone. Especially after last year being so difficult with the pandemic,” Castroneves told reporters after his victory. “It’s not full percent everyone here, but very, very nice for everyone to celebrate.” June 5, 2021

to Salt Lake City in eighth. While these cities ride well across most categories, the Pacific Northwest especially sets itself apart in safety. Oregon and Washington cities claim four of the top 10 slots in this category. Feel free to cruise the streets of Portland — our safest city — without Highlights and Lowlights: putting yourself in harm’s way West Coasting to a Win: (just follow the traffic rules). When it comes to finding a nice A Mixed Bicycle Bag place to bike, pedal toward (Lanes, Yes; Climate, the sunset. Cities from all over No): Many big cities have the Western U.S. dominate the invested in biking intop of our ranking. We start frastructure that’s reflected on the Pacific Coast in San in our ranking. Washington, Francisco, our No. 1 biking city, D.C., for example, has the up through Oregon — Eugene fourth highest share of bike at No. 4 and Portland at No. commuters and the second 2 — and continue north to best bike score in the country. Seattle at No. 6. We then head Boston is No. 5 in safety, in-land toward Boise, Idaho, while New York City ranks in ninth place and back down fourth in bike-trail access.
It’s climate that has our ranking pulling the brakes on these cities: New York City lands at 176 in precipitation and 138 in the number of very cold days (a bad combo if you’re out-side in bike shorts). Boston has similar weather problems. While Washington has some-what fewer very cold days, there are plenty of hot days, as well. If commuters are deciding whether to strap on a helmet and pedal through the elements, it turns out the weather matters, which keeps these otherwise great biking cities from riding high on our list. Uneasy Riders in the South: It’s no surprise that Southern cities tend to find themselves at the bottom of our ranking. Biking requires
a lot of outdoor time, which isn’t as easy in a place like Montgomery, Alabama, with an average of 85 very hot days in a year and a whopping 53 inches of monthly rain. Warm and wet don’t mix well with cycling. It also makes sense that many of these same Southern cities — such as Jackson, Missis-sippi, or Shreveport, Louisiana — have few bike trails and bike commuters. Why invest in the infrastructure if the weather’s not good for biking? But don’t let that stop you. If you really love cycling enough to hit that wet pavement when the air is thick as soup, ride on. We are grateful to have earned the support of Assembly Budget Chair Ting, Assembly Budget Subcommittee 4 Chair Carrillo, and Senate Budget Chair Skinner on this critical priority and on several other local requests we have submitted.” The privately-owned Oasis Mobilehome Park is located on tribal land within federal jurisdiction. Issues over jurisdiction have made the severe public health and safety situation at Oasis Mobilehome Park challenging to navigate. Despite these challenges, it was important for Garcia to take action to protect residents at the state level. Garcia’s budget request was submitted in collaboration with residents, the Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability, and with the support of dozens of local advocates and organizations. The Legislature must approve the final 2021-22 California Budget by June 15. Upon approval, the budget will be sent to Governor Newsom for his signature.

Children’s cartoon Blue’s Clues features an LGBTQ pride parade
By Desert Star Staff A popular children’s television show, Blue’s Clues, has been accused of brainwashing its young viewers after releasing an LGBTQ singalong with lyrics many adults don’t even understand in celebration of ‘Pride Month.’ Published on the show’s
YouTube channel, the video, titled “The Blue’s Clues Pride Parade Sing-Along,” features a cartoon version of Nina West, an American drag queen, who leads the children in a song set; to the tune of ‘The Ants Go Marching.’ Floats with animals waving rainbow and transgender flags pass by on the screen as West sings.
The song features words such as “queer,” “trans,” “bi,” as well as “pan” and “non-binary,” with the lyrics displayed at the bottom of the screen so that children can sing along. For example, as a group of beavers decked out in LGBTQ and trans regalia ride by, the drag queen sings:
“Families marching four by four hurrah! Hurrah! Families marching four by four hurrah! Hurrah! / Trans members of this family / they love each other so proudly / and they all go marching in the big parade.” One cartoon beavers are shown with visible “top scars” – scars from surgery
that transgender men undergo to remove breast tissue. The detail was confirmed by Snopes, which “fact-checked” whether Nickelodeon intended for the pixelated lines on the beaver’s chest to represent such scars. But there were plenty of others who criticized putting such content in a cartoon meant for small children. One commenter described it as “indoctrination,” while another said it was a sign of the “end times.” Another reply said that content related to gender identity shouldn’t be “pushed” on children who simply want to watch cartoons. The criticisms led some to claim that “rightwingers” were overreacting to the animated parade. Pride Month, which begins on June 1, has prompted many brands and companies, some of which market to children, to show their support for the LGBTQ community. Last month, Kelloggs released a special edition of “Together With Pride” cereal, featuring rainbow-colored hearts “dusted with edible glitter.”
Report: Amazon Employees Face High Workplace Injury Rates By Lily Bohlke/PNS A new report finds that Amazon’s focus on speed comes at a cost to the company’s workforce. An analysis of OSHA data by a coalition of four major labor unions finds the rate of workplace injuries at Amazon is nearly two times that of other non-Amazon warehouses and storage facilities. Eric Frumin - director of health and safety with the Strategic Organizing Center - noted that multiple warehouses have injury rates even higher than the national rate in Illinois. For example, at a fulfillment center in Waukegan,
it’s more than 5.5 times the national non-Amazon rate. “The company has very, very demanding workloads and schedules and discipline systems for the people who work in its warehouses,” said Frumin. An Amazon spokesperson told CNBC that the company is learning and seeing improvements through various safety programs, from nutrition and mental-health guidance to a “Working Well” initiative, including stretching and guided meditation. At the start of the pandemic, Amazon made operational changes that
reportedly reduced production pressure on workers. But Frumin noted those changes were later reversed. The report also finds that injuries are even more common among workers at delivery stations and delivery contractors. In addition, it notes delivery drivers report intense pressure to meet the company’s ambitious delivery deadlines, sometimes in bad weather or other poor conditions. Fruman urged Amazon to make significant changes. “Unfortunately,” said Frumin, “we see these terrible results where so
many more workers in Amazon warehouses suffer injuries than in other warehouses, never mind in the workplace in general.” More than 40% of Amazon workers who responded reported pain or injury from
their job that required them to miss work - as well as nearly half of the delivery drivers. And more than 80% of workers said their pain or injury was related to production pressure or speed.
Around 42% of respondents to a survey of Amazon workers reported pain or injury from their job that caused them to miss work. (Mike Mareen/Adobe Stock)

Attract More Birds to Your Backyard By Desert Star Staff With all the constraints people lived through in 2020, many turned to their own backyards – nature, in particular – for hope, solace, wonder and even entertainment. Despite the worldwide crisis, nature’s normalcy remained intact; flowers continued to bloom, bees continued to pollinate and birds continued to fly and forage food. Feeding birds can be enjoyable for any age group and provide stress relief for all who partake. A University of Exeter study, focused on nature’s impact on humans in suburban and urban areas, found lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress were associated with the number of birds people saw during afternoons at home. The benefits of birdwatching come from seeing lots of birds – quantity not “quality” – the study found. People “felt relaxed and connected to nature when they watched birds in their gardens,” researchers said. These feelings increased with the level of bird feeding in the yard. For millions working and schooling from home, this stress reduction was an unintended bonus. Data from 2020 shows sales of bird feed, feeders,
nesting boxes and bird houses spiked as interest in backyard birds soared while people spent more time at home. Interest in birding isn’t slowing down. If you haven’t tried attracting birds to your backyard, now is a perfect opportunity to start. The experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products Co. offer these bird feed and feeder basics to attract more birds to your backyard.
Feeders: A variety of bird feeder types placed at different heights attract more birds than one feeder featuring one seed type. Start with two feeder types that accommodate most feed options. Bowl feeders serve not only seeds but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet. An option like Cole’s Bountiful Bowl Feeder comes with an adjustable dome cover you can raise or lower to prevent larger birds and squirrels from getting to food and protect it from rain. Traditional tube feeders are all-purpose options for bird feeding, especially for small birds that cling. For example, the Terrific Tube Feeder is made with state-of-the-art materials to prevent warping and discoloration and includes a quick-clean, removable base to make cleaning fast and easy. Just push a button
and the bottom of the feeder pops off for easy access to the inside. Rinse the feeder with soapy water, dunk it into a water-bleach solution at a concentration of 9-to-1, rinse, dry and reattach the bottom. Regular cleaning of feeders is essential for preventing mold, germs and disease. Popular Foods: Birdseed: Not all birdseed is created equal. Look for quality blends without cheap filler like red millet and oats. All-natural seed containing no chemicals or mineral oil is safe and more appealing to birds. Top seed picks include all-natural black oil sunflower and Cole’s “Hot Meats” (sunflower meats
infused with habanero chili peppers that birds love and squirrels dislike). Or an option like Special Feeder blend, packed with favorites including black oil sunflower, sunflower meats and pecans, attracts the greatest number of wild birds. Offering a wide variety, Cole’s feed is researched and specifically formulated to attract certain bird species, the largest number of birds and the greatest variety of birds. Insects and Worms: A healthy, lush lawn is one of the best ways to feed birds that prefer insects and worms. You can supplement birds’ diets by serving dried mealworms in a packaged variety that’s easier to feed and less
messy than live mealworms. Mealworms are packed with energy and contain essential nutrients, fat and protein. Fresh Fruit: Apples, orange halves and bananas are favored fruits. Suet: Perfect for insecteating birds, suet is a high-fat food that provides abundant calories, rich nutrition and is a high-energy treat. Using the right feeders and high-quality feed can enhance your backyard and entice more birds, bringing stress relief and enjoyment. Big Vote in Battle Over Bay Area Air Quality By Suzanne Potter/PNS SAN FRANCISCO - A long battle to clean up the air around oil refineries comes to a vote before the Bay Area Air Quality Management District board. At issue is whether to require oil refineries to install technology to scrub the air they release and remove harmful pollutants.
Richard Gray, a longtime advocate with the group 350 Bay Area, said the asthma rate in Richmond, near the refineries, is 25% - almost twice the asthma rate statewide. “So, there’s really bad asthma, heart disease; there’s lung disease, low birth weight, dementia,
cancer,” he said. “All of these health issues are caused by inhaling particulate matter.” The board will decide whether to require the Chevron and PBF refineries to add what is known as wet gas-scrubbing technology to their fluid catalytic cracking units or “cat crackers.” The technology would reduce the amount of particulate matter emitted by 70%. The federal government already required the Valero Refinery to install the equipment. PBF has said a retrofit would be prohibitively
expensive and has threatened to shut down its facility in Martinez, which employs 600 people if the board votes to require installing the equipment. However, gray pointed out that estimates on the cost vary widely. “There’s a huge difference between how much the refineries say it’s going to cost to install this - $800 million - and the amount that the air district says it’s that going to cost: $250odd million,” he said. Groups that want to

California Becomes the Latest “Age-Friendly” State
California is implementing dozens of initiatives to make the state a more “age-friendly” place to live. (AARP) By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. California is now officially an
“age-friendly” state thanks to a new partnership between the California Department
of Aging and AARP. The nonprofit is lending its expertise to help implement
the state’s new Master Plan for Aging, released in January. Kim McCoy Wade, director of the California Department of Aging, said the master plan has five overarching goals. “The first goal is housing for all ages and stages,” said McCoy Wade. “California needs to build many more diverse and affordable types of housing. The second goal is health reimagined. We know folks want help that allows them to stay at home and live independently. “ The other goals include policies to support inclusion and equity, support caregivers, and lower living costs for older Americans. Research shows that by 2030, one of every five people in the U.S. will be 65 or older. And by 2035, the number of adults aged more than 65 will be greater than the
number of children under 18. McCoy Wade says AARP’s roster of public policy experts has informed the debate on various topics. “That expertise and that network has been enormously helpful in shaping the plan and now will help us to make it a reality,” said McCoy Wade. More than 50 California communities are also part of the program. It shares best practices on ways to make their towns more livable for all ages, informing decisions on housing, transportation, green space and more. The other states and territories in the Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities include Colorado, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Groups, Cities Fight Bills to Speed 5G Wireless Broadband Expansion By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Community activists are urging California lawmakers to reject two bills that would limit local control to clear the way for 5G small-cell wireless equipment near homes, schools and businesses. Supporters of the bills have cited the economic benefits of improved high-speed broadband. However, multiple cities are fighting the 5G rollout, citing concerns about health, safety and property values. Doug Wood, founder and director of the nonprofit Americans for Responsible Technology, noted that the League of California Cities opposes both bills. “It gives the telecoms free rein to install this equipment pretty much wherever they want and puts unreasonable time limits on a city’s permitting process,” he said. “The only people benefiting
from these bills are the telecoms, not Californians.” Senate Bill 556 would require municipalities to make space available at low rates for communications service providers. It passed the Senate and is now in two Assembly committees. And Assembly Bill 537 would force cities to go to court if they want to deny a permit for a location. It has passed in several Assembly committees with bipartisan support. The telecom companies have argued that installing 5G statewide will give lowincome communities a leg up. But Larry Ortega, with the nonprofit Community Union, said wired municipal broadband is a better option. He added that these bills do nothing to address the cost to the consumer. “You know, many of our kids are not going to afford 5G,” he said, “so, there’s

Hands-Only CPR Training Could Save More Latino Lives
By Nadia Ramlagan/PNS This week is National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Week. In North Carolina, community groups are working to boost handsonly CPR training in Latino communities, where residents are at higher risk for out-ofhospital cardiac arrest. Research shows people living in Latino communities are 39% less likely to have bystander CPR performed on them during an emergency and 44% less likely to survive. Anne Miller, regional executive director for the Triangle and Eastern North Carolina American Heart Association, said the disparity is costing lives in Black and Brown communities. “Even in children, too, compared to white children,” said Miller. “Bystander CPR was 41% less likely for Black kids, and 22% less likely for Hispanics.” Nationwide, nearly 400,000 people experience cardiac arrest each year, and
most heart attacks happen at home. Unfortunately, less than 10% of individuals survive the trip to the hospital. The American Heart Association is working with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, and El Centro to spread the word about handsonly CPR training. Miller said the pandemic hadn’t stopped community health workers from reaching residents. “The health promotes workers were onboarded during the pandemic over Zoom, but have been in-person training,” said Miller, “giving out masks or providing needed blood-pressure information and CPR to those who are interested in learning and taking that information back home.” Miller says many people are intimidated by the technique. Still, she explains the research shows chest compressions alone can circulate oxygen and be as effective as rescuebreath CPR for the first few minutes during cardiac arrest. “And it’s easier than you
The American Heart Association estimates that 100,000 to 200,000 lives nationwide could be saved each year if CPR were performed promptly during cardiac arrest. teach others around you.” The American Heart Association estimates that 100- to 200-thousand lives could be saved each year if CPR were performed early
during an emergency. Disclosure: American Heart Association of North Carolina contributes to our fund for reporting on Health Issues.
How Parents Can Help Children Build Social Skills
By Desert Star Staff While adults may joke about needing to relearn how to be around others in a postpandemic world, children can also benefit from a refresh of certain soft skills – especially young children who may not remember pre-pandemic life. Building on these skills can also help children prepare for a successful return to school. In fact, data from Mintel shows parents’ top learning priorities for their children prior to entering grade school are how to play well with others (67%) and good manners (66%). “Summertime is a great time for families to help their children focus on social skills that may not have gotten much attention this past year, particularly if families were social distancing or in quarantine,” said Taunya Banta, inclusion services manager for KinderCare Learning Centers. “Parents

can set their children up for success when school starts again in the fall by helping them work on these soft skills in relaxed settings like family gatherings and on the neighborhood playground. Consider these ways parents can help their children build social skills. Name emotions: Naming emotions is an important part of learning how to regulate them. If your children don’t understand what emotions they’re experiencing, they may be confused or upset by how they feel and that could amplify the feelings and make it more difficult to regulate the emotions. Talk with your children about your own feelings, or the feelings of characters in books, to help them learn to identify emotions and appropriate ways to address those feelings. For example, “I’m sad, but I know a hug will help me feel better,” or
“I’m mad and that’s OK. It’s not OK to hit, but I can punch a pillow or stomp my feet to get the feelings out of my body.” As a family, try practicing some simple emotion regulation strategies

like deep breathing. To help younger children breathe deep, hold up two fingers and ask them to smell the flower as they inhale (one finger) and blow out the candle as they exhale (the other). Play with other children: Play gives children an opportunity to freely express their emotions and thoughts, work out feelings and explore relationships in a safe, lighthearted way. If you feel comfortable and can follow health and safety guidelines, visit a playground or set up play dates with other children of similar ages then take a step back to let the children play together. If your children aren’t ready to play with others, allow them to stay close to you until they feel ready to join the other children. Once the children are playing together, observe their
interactions and talk with your children (in the moment or later) about how they felt. If they had fun, ask what they enjoyed. If disagreements or awkward moments came up, help your children problemsolve ways they could address those situations next time. “Most importantly, remember children of all ages have an incredible capacity for resiliency,” Banta said. “Just knowing they have a steady base to return to, a safe place where they’re loved and appreciated for who they are, can give children the courage they need to face the challenge of a new or uncertain social situation with self-confidence and courage.” For more tips to help your children build or improve their social skills, visit kindercare. com.
