Standouts of Ubaldini’s 11-song set included the timely “Free Speech Blues,” haunting “Song Of Our Time,” rockabilly-mining “Don’t Say Goodbye” and tender “The General Store.” He ended his set with a powerful take on “The Offended,” a powerful song aimed at those unwilling to listen or consider anything beyond their own limited view. Verheyen — best known for his role as lead guitarist in Supertramp and as a session player recording for the likes of the Bee Gees and Dolly Parton — impressed with a set of songs and instrumentals displaying his top-tier guitar

Highlights of his fastmoving set (that attracted a big crowd) included the blues-rock original “Stealing Gasoline,” bouncy “Queen Bee” (a new song enhanced by a cool guitar intro) and “Clawhammer Man,” the latter a track from his latest album Sundial featuring some especially soulful vocals from Verheyen. HOROSCOPES ARIES
You are known for individuality and freedom of expression. Only Aquarius rivals you in this. In times to come, the urge for individual creativity and freedom becomes more pronounced. Because you must initiate changes in the present culture, events in our world are radicalizing and revolutionizing you. Expect unexpected changes - part of the Divine Plan to “make all things new,” for which you’re partially responsible.
TAURUS You need to be out and about in the air, in gardens, on long walks, in order to access your natural intuition - the Rain Cloud of Knowable Things. Often you find the need to work alone so your investigative gifts can be fully accessed. As usual you avoid anything that feels like an opposition, attempting instead to flow with the accepted reality. Uranus, in Taurus, keeps shattering your calmness. It is not comfortable, yet it’s needed. Keep going. Keep sharing and directing the wind.
GEMINI Everything you say has importance. All that you do has importance. Your hopes, dreams, wishes, friends, groups and associates are important. Living with like-minded people, realizing ideas from the past need updating in order to build the new Aquarian culture and civilization. To be successful in the future one must know and live the new Aquarian Laws & Principles. Unanimity, Goodwill, Right Human Relations are a few of them. Leo is the completion of Aquarius.

banking, insurance and investments. Make sure they are safe and secure. The economy may begin to behave erratically, with sudden ups and downs in the future. Attempt to stabilize all resources. Consider investing in gold and silver even when the market shifts and changes. Maintain precious metals in safekeeping (special safes). You are intuitive enough to understand these things. Banning Solar Installations in Our HOA? By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL Hi Mr. Richardson: Can a HOA prevent us from placing solar panels on the roof of our townhome? We are in an older condominium association and the roofs are hard, flat shingles that were just replaced. If we agree to be responsible for the repairs needed due to our solar panels (not the ultimate roof replacement in another X years or whatever), do we have the right to place solar panels on the roof above our townhome? Looking forward to your answer. M.F., Carmel Valley. Dear Kelly: Can my HOA deny me from installing solar panels on my roof? M.H., Rancho Santa Fe. Dear Mr. Richardson: I submitted a formal application to my HOA Architectural committee for the installation of solar panels on my roof,

This means that, even though a townhouse condominium roof is normally common area and not individually owned by the unit owner, the HOA cannot completely ban solar installations on those common area roofs. Build Friendship Skills for Back-to-School Success By Desert Star Staff When thinking about the back-to-school season, most people naturally think of academics. However, it’s just as important to focus on social and emotional skills. Children of all ages are still learning to manage their emotions and get along with others. As they learn these skills, behaviors that make academic learning more challenging for everyone else in the classroom may be seen. Social and emotional skills are crucial to a child’schild’s academic success, but they aren’t inherent, said Carter Peters from the KinderCare’s inclusion services team. Teachers tell us repeatedly that starting the school year with a grasp on social-emotional learning is just as important as knowing academic concepts. Children who are struggling to manage their emotions and transition into the classroom may not be able to focus on academics. Consider these three skills families can teach their children before school starts to help build friendships.
Turn Transitions into Games: Making a game out of stressful transitions can help you and your child reframe your mindsets and reduce stress. For example, ask your child: Can you hop like a bunny while getting your school things together? Or playing a listening game like Simon Says can help your child develop executive function skills such as impulse control. You could also give them choices. For example, tell your child You can put your shoes on yourself, or I can help you, which lets them feel a sense of autonomy and control when choosing the desired solution.
Take Turns: One thing younger children often struggle with is the concept of sharing. Adults can forget that to young children, sharing implies giving something up, Peters said. If your child works to share, try introducing the concept of taking turns: It’s Mariah’s turn for the slide. When she’s done, then you can go, for example. Help your child practice how to have conversations with playmates about taking turns.
Play a What if Game: Help school-age children build a growth mindset by problem-solving responses to common friendship issues. Ask your child What would you do if? They or help them practice responses. Thinking of reactions ahead of time gives your child a rehearsed playbook to choose from at the moment. The more they practice these responses, the
less they will see unwanted behaviors such as yelling or hitting. By giving children the autonomy to choose their own answers, you demonstrate your trust in them, which can provide children with a powerful sense of their own abilities to act maturely. The need to practice impulse control and selfregulation skills will remain a challenge throughout childhood as executive
function skills continue to develop into a person’s mid20s, Peters said. It’s not that children don’t know better; it’s more than their brains are still learning these vital social and emotional skills. Building these social skills now can help your children start the school year ready to learn and grow. Find more tips to build children’s social and emotional skills at kindercare. com. Heather Hanlon Named Riverside County Teacher of the Year By Desert Star Staff To add to the energy of the last day of school on Friday, June 3, at Dorothy McElhinney Middle School, friends, family, and colleagues gathered to surprise Mrs. Heather Hanlon at her classroom/dance studio. Amazed and teary-eyed, Mrs. Hanlon listened as Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edwin Gomez, announced that she was the fourth 2023 Riverside County Teacher of the Year. “Today, we recognize your hard work, innovation, and expertise,” Dr. Gomez said. “You have used your love and passion for dance to guide instruction and cultivate foundational goals for all of your students.” Mrs. Hanlon will join Autumn Khong Lundblad from Sundance Elementary School in the Beaumont Unified School District, Beth Schwandt from Lake Hills Elementary School in Alvord Unified School District, and Anthony Gomez from Jurupa Middle School in the Jurupa Unified School District to represent Riverside
County in the 2023 California State Teacher of the Year competition later this year. “I honestly don’t do this by myself ever,” Mrs. Hanlon said to her studio full of colleagues and family members after the surprise announcement. “I can’t thank everyone enough for their support over the years. It’s the only way I got here.” Mrs. Hanlon was asked to continue her celebration in the school gymnasium following her announcement. Instead, she was surprised by a cheering tunnel of students chanting her name and waving hand-crafted posters. Michigan-born Mrs. Hanlon and her family moved to the Temecula area of Riverside County during her 7th-grade year of school. “Coming to sunny California was a culture shock, to say the least.” Struggling with the change, she forged a connection with her language arts teacher, Mrs. Skumawitz, who gave her the courage and confidence to press forward. “She was a bright light and is why I went into teaching.”
Mrs. Hanlon works tirelessly to facilitate a program with open arms to all students. “I always thrive on making dance accessible to those for whom it had not been before,” said Mrs. Hanlon. “I want to normalize boys dancing, connect with all students, and make my room a safe place.” All four teachers of the year will represent Riverside County in the 2023 California Teacher of the Year competition, where at least one Riverside County teacher has been selected as a California Teacher of the Year in eight of the last nine years: 2022 – Nichi Aviña, Cielo Vista Charter School, Palm Springs USD 2021 – Keisa Brown, University Heights Middle School, Riverside USD, and Allison Cyr, Lyndon B. Menifee native serves at Naval Air Technical Training Center By 1st Class Anna-Liesa Hussey PENSACOLA, Fla. – Airman Recruit Joseph Yniguez, a native of Menifee, California, serves the U.S. Navy at Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) in Pensacola, Florida. As a student at NATTC, Yniguez is serving among sailors and Marines, developing the skills needed to be successful naval aviation warfighters. Students at NATTC are taught the requirements and skills needed to succeed in their new careers. NATTC instructors are experts in the subject matter
they teach, and they provide cutting-edge technical training that transforms students into mission-ready sailors. Yniguez joined the Navy one year ago. Today, Yniguez serves as an aviation electronics technician. “I felt college just wasn’t for me,” said Yniguez. “I was working at a restaurant and started thinking about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Then, I had friends that joined the Navy, and their sea stories inspired me to join.” According to Yniguez, the values required to
succeed in the Navy are similar to those in Menifee. “Growing up, I learned that working hard and striving to do your best will lead to great things,” said Yniguez. “It’s the same way serving in the Navy. The harder you work, the more rewards you receive.” Naval Air Technical Training Center’s mission is to provide world-class professional aviation “good care of our people, families and being good neighbors and stewards in Pensacola and the surrounding region. NATTC’s leaders and experts develop, deliver and leverage technology to optimize the performance of our Navy, Marine Corps and foreign national students. Additionally, we provide the most up-to-date and relevant
training available to our sailors and Marines, ensuring Naval aviation’s success. Serving in the Navy means Yniguez is part of a team taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “The Navy is important to national defense because we help keep our seas safe from piracy and help free trade,” said Yniguez. Yniguez and the sailors they serve with have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service. “I am proud of myself for joining the Navy,” said Yniguez. “That decision will lead me to many life experiences. excited for what lies ahead.” As Yniguez and other sailors continue to train and perform the mission they are tasked with, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy. “To me, serving in the Navy means having a secure future when I decide to have a family,” added Yniguez. “It will also give me the opportunity to travel and see the world.” The Naval Education and Training Command is the U.S. Navy’s Force Development pillar and largest shore command. Through its “Street to Fleet” focus, Naval Education and Training Command recruits civilians and transforms them into skilled warfighters ready to meet the current and future needs of the U.S. Navy.

“Practical Uses of California Native Plants” By Yanina Aldao Galvan There was a better way before humans developed agriculture and the agricultural practices we all know today. Humans used to be stewards of the land; they gently coax nature to thrive by channeling water to certain trees or plants. It was a practice that married foraging with horticulture. The way we extract food from nature today is the leading cause of climate change, soil depletion, and hunger. By cultivating native plants in our gardens, we help native pollinators and the soil. Still, we also reduce the amount of water used and prevent wildfires, all while enjoying the gifts of fresh foods and cosmetics right at our fingertips. Yanina Aldao Galvan was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, on her father’s family-owned cattle ranch. She moved to the city of Cordoba with her mother and brother at the age of 5. In Cordoba, she pursued a career in Agriculture Science, following in the footsteps of her father’s family. In 2007 she came to the USA as part of www.desertstarweekly.com
a cultural exchange program and spent the next 7 years in Washington D.C. She studied Ecotourism. In Philadelphia, she worked as an Outdoor School Instructor for REI Inc. After moving to Joshua Tree in 2015, she worked as a Land Steward for the Mojave Desert Land Trust. She was the first recipient of the Minerva Hoyt Internship, which has allowed her to devote an entire semester of work to studying the ecology of various species in Joshua Tree National Park. Now, she is pursuing a career in plant ecology at U.C. Riverside. Join “Yani” at the Old Schoolhouse for this inperson lecture series at the 29 Palms Historical Society, 6760 National Park Drive, on Friday, June 10, at 7 pm. Admission is $5 at the door. Doors open at 6:15 pm. For further information call: The Desert Institute 760-819-4714 or email desertinstitute@ joshuatree.org

State Budget Deal Allocates Millions to CA Small Business
By Suzanne Potter/PNS Small business groups celebrate the new budget deal reached between California state legislators. Next up comes
final negotiations with Gov. Gavin Newsom. The deal includes more than $1 billion to offset the cost of paid sick leave and help cover
“Small businesses still need capital and technical assistance,” said Martinez. “So, we are happy to see that the governor’s office and the legislators are committed to continued support for the small businesses.” The budget must pass by June 15 and be signed into law by July 1. The budget includes $50 million for the California Investment and Innovation Fund, $8 million for Women’s Business Centers, and $500 million for the California Small Business Hard-Hit Industries grant program. be able to shepherd many more budding entrepreneurs. “We cannot only provide capital to the small businesses,” said Ramos, “but also nurture them in that whole process, just to ensure that that capital is used efficiently and effectively.” The budget also includes $150 million for COVID-19 small business grants, $75 million for droughtrelief grants for small agricultural businesses in the state, and $1 billion to be distributed over four years by the California Energy Commission as grants to companies headquartered in California. Maggie Lindemann “break me!” By Desert Star Staff Arrived just a few short weeks after Maggie Lindemann’s recent single “how could you do this to me” (feat. Sleeping With Sirens’ Kellin Quinn). The alt/ rock songstress has released her latest collaborative video/track, “break me!” featuring siiickbrain. “break me!” is from Maggie’s forthcoming debut album, SUCKERPUNCH is expected to drop later this year. Directed by siiickbrain, “break me!” is a chaotic, industrial-tinged video that explores the feelings of “fear and adrenaline” vs. “the calmness and peace” that come with being in an altered state, be it from drugs, alcohol or love, according to Maggie. “‘break me!’ featuring
siiickbrain is about being intoxicated,” Maggie shares. “It’s all the feelings it gives you, that rush of fear and adrenaline, and the calmness and peace. The video conveys the juxtaposition of the two – one moment you’re euphoric, and the next you feel like you’re broken, suffocating, and your heart is decaying.” In April, Maggie announced the title of her full-length with an official website for the album that unlocks unique content (liner notes from Maggie, BTS videos, song demos, release dates, music video trailers, etc.) upon completing puzzles/ciphers. The site is conceptualized by Maggie with inspiration from the American horror film SAW. Having accumulated
more than a billion streams since she began releasing music in 2015 and following the release of her massively successful single “Pretty Girl” in 2017. Maggie’s sound shifted to align with her own musical inspirations and motivate a generation of young women searching for their own voices while putting her unfiltered and uncompromising approach on full display. Maggie’s aim is to overcome adversity placed on women in music and create music that speaks to her – not a music executive at a label. At 23 years old, Maggie has uncovered her authentic voice as a songwriter and injected a lethal dose of vulnerability and honesty regarding anxieties, obsessions,
and insecurities into her new material. Her latest collection of tracks featured on SUCKERPUNCH picks up where PARANOIA (>117million streams)
left off—with Maggie unapologetically spearheading a generational movement of breaking boundaries and societal expectations.
By Desert Star Staff Poor oral health is common among American adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 65 million Americans have periodontitis, the most advanced form of periodontal disease. According to Harvard Medical School, people with periodontal disease are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and dementia. Incorporating measures to help protect you from severe health conditions becomes increasingly essential as you age. However, many people overlook a crucial contributor to whole-body health:
the mouth. The health of your mouth is directly related to critical aspects of your overall health. Bad breath, cavities, bleeding gums and gum disease are all signs your mouth is not as healthy as it should be. Fighting the harmful bacteria in your mouth that causes these health issues and more isn’t difficult, but it does require ongoing effort. Brush and floss. Keeping up on the basics is essential. Brushing twice daily and flossing at least once a day helps keep plaque in check and loosens debris that can promote harmful bacteria growth, causing bad breath and cavities and gum concerns.
When brushing, aim for at least 30 seconds per quadrant and use circular motions with moderate (not aggressive) pressure. When flossing, maneuver the floss down to your gums, then scrape the edges of each tooth with repeated upward and downward motions. Restore good bacteria. Crowding out harmful, disease-causing bacteria your toothbrush and floss can’t reach can help restore your mouth’s natural balance. “Oral-care probiotics are designed specifically to balance the bacteria in the mouth, similar to how traditional probiotics work in the gut,” said Sam Low, D.D.S., M.S., M.Ed.
and professor emeritus at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. “Oralcare probiotics can be one of the easiest and most effective ways to maintain good dental hygiene.” For example, ProBiora’s line of oral-care probiotics contains strains of good bacteria naturally found in the mouth that, when dissolved in the mouth, allow the probiotic bacteria to migrate to the nooks and crannies of your teeth and gums, where they compete with your pathogens or harmful bacteria. So adding the once-a-day lozenge to your oral care routine can help support healthier gums and teeth, fresher breath and whiter teeth.
Schedule regular cleanings. Like many health conditions, the earlier you catch a problem with your oral health, the better your prognosis. Detecting and correcting small cavities is far less invasive than large cavities and other oral health problems like gum disease, which can be treated more effectively when caught in the early stages. Aim for a dental visit at least every six months, or more often if you’re experiencing pain or other concerning symptoms. caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 084832-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 084832-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”- An Exciting Hit at Ruskin Group Theatre
DINNER won’t match the acting of the original cast, rest assured the director assembled a highly professional ensemble who deliver fully actualized performances, mining the various layers of their respective characters. The play is performed on John Iacovelli’s stunning set, which expanded the limited space into multiple playing areas. It revolves around two families and the maid Matilda or Tilly, wonderfully played by Vickilyn Reynolds, whose character provides comic relief. Christina Drayton, exquisitely characterized by Lee Garlington and her husband Matt, played by Brad Greenquist, whose performance is equally remarkable, comes faceto-face with their liberal beliefs when their daughter Joanna (Mary Pumper) falls in love with Dr. John Prentice, a successful black man. He is rich, intelligent, and handsome and has traveled the world to conduct research. Tackling a part played by Sidney Poitier is no easy task, but rest assured that Vincent Washington
II has a strong stage presence and delivers a compelling, multi-layered performance. The story begins with Christina’s art gallery manager, Hillary St. George, played by Mouchette van Helsdingen, bringing paintings to the Drayton’s home in preparation for dinner with a well-known art collector. The opinionated maid, who is somewhat of an “enforcer,” is busy setting the table and catches Matt, who owns a newspaper, sneaking a phone call to his office. Knowing he’s under strict doctor’s orders to slow down, Tilly rips the phone out of his hand and tells him to go play golf with Monsignor Ryan, well played by Carl Paul Denk Jr. Joanna arrives with her black boyfriend, Dr. John Prentice, taking her mother by surprise and announcing that she and the good doctor are in love. Trying to take it all in, mom says, “I need to sit down,” and is immediately faced with whether or not she is a hypocrite with her liberal beliefs. Joanna shares she met John at the hospital; he
is eleven years older and that his wife and child were killed in a car accident. She continues saying, “There’s one more thing,” at which point mom says, “Shall I lie on the floor first?” One more thing is Joanna’s announcement that they plan to marry and will leave for the airport that evening. However, John insists they won’t marry without her parents’ approval, which may not be forthcoming. In the meantime, Christina orders a background check on John and much to her chagrin, he is who he says he is, including authoring a book. In the meantime, Tilly is as shocked as mom and attacks John verbally, accusing him of being up to something. She immediately calls Matt to come home, and in short order, he’s brought up to date on the situation. He goes on a rampage expressing why he’s totally opposed to this union, predicting they will endure a miserable life in the face of society’s laws against mixed marriages. Matt decides to get to know the suitor a bit more, and there is a male-bonding scene in which they discuss Joe Louis’ famous fight with Max Schmeling and who were the best dancers on American Bandstand – the white kids or the black kids. One startling surprise is enough, but Joanna cooked up another and unbeknownst to John, she invited his parents to dinner. Enter John Prentice Sr., skillfully played by Dan Martin, and his wife Mary, a veteran of the stage Renn Woods, who knows how to recover a character when you accidentally knock over a set-piece. Act II reveals the rage and disgust John Prentice Sr. has toward the dangerous idea of his son marrying a white girl, at one point yelling: “Is this Candid Camera?” Where’s the white guy hiding?” John’s mom is equally distressed and

William Rose’s original screenplay was adapted for the stage by Todd Kreidler and is brilliantly directed by singer/songwriter and playwright Lita Gaithers Owens. She is co-author of the Broadway hit musical “It Ain’t Nothing But the Blues,” which was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Musical of 1999. Should you be concerned that the current iteration of GUESS WHO’S COMING TO
later expresses her feelings in a poignant monologue, one of several delivered throughout the play by different characters. Matt acknowledges that this situation is quite a surprise, with John Sr. bellowing: “A surprise is a retirement party. This is an ambush!” Finally, he storms out and says he’ll be in the car but returns shortly, “I was afraid I would be arrested.” Throughout the well-written play and spot-on direction, tense moments are mitigated with humor. However, despite its pathos and comedy, the underlying theme is a test of principles when they come knocking on your liberal door and Mrs. Prentice’s comment about knowing their place in the world and that they would never have crossed social paths with the Draytons. For those not familiar with the original film, you are probably wondering if the two sets of parents will ultimately give their approval or if the love between the young couple will be eradicated by prejudice from both sides. To find that out, dear readers, I would suggest you buy a ticket as soon as possible; this play is a hit, and you’re in for an evening of theatre at its finest, thanks in no small part to Artistic Director John Ruskin and Managing Director/ Producer Michael R. Myers.
