The Eagles at Acrisure Arena

Don Henley and Joe Walsh

Story and Photos by Pat Krause

The Acrisure Arenas hosted the iconic Eagles Band on two special nights. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24th and 25th, to a sold-out crowd. The Arena ice rink was covered with seats, and the whole

Arena was filled to hear this iconic band. The Eagles had several original band members. Renowned artist Vince Gill has joined the group for this tour.

The band started the night with the well-known song, Hotel California. They

continued the night with more of their famous songs. The crowd loved that. Some pieces were New Kid in Town, Life On The Fast Lane, and Wasted Time. They continued with some of their most famous hits. Take it Easy, Peaceful

Easy Feeling, Lying Eyes, Witchy Woman, and more.

I heard they played for 3 hours, so all guests got their money’s worth. I read that Deacon Frye, son of deceased member Glen Frye of the Eagles, played with

the band and sang; Vince Gill did a duet with Joe Walsh. I also read that the band did a number with the Desert Symphony. High-tech videos were shown on the screen.

Tell me more: Gorillaz’ eighth studio album Cracker Island is another enthralling journey showcasing singersongwriter/multi-instrumentalist Damon Albarn’s otherworldly talents fusing art pop, electronica, hip hop and other styles into a signature brew as accessible as it is artistic. On this disc Albarn directs the world’s most beloved virtual band to stratospheric heights

with collaborations that surprise and expand the project’s sonic reach. Surprises abound; just listen to the shimmering “Oil,” a track featuring the duel vocals of Albarn and Stevie Nicks.

“Silent Running” is a majestic mid-tempo track co-written by Albarn and producer Greg Kurstin featuring guest vocalist Adeleye Omotayo. The hypnotic trip hop romp “New Gold” features the tandem talents of Tame Impala and Bootie Brown to up the quotient. Bad Bunny brings a palpable Latin zest to “Tormenta.” The collaboration with Beck, “Possession Island,” is a decidedly gorgeous song with a soundscape complete with mellotron, synthesizer, vibraphone, pump organ and acoustic guitar providing the perfect musical backdrop for

You might like if you enjoy: Jason Falkner, Beck, Tom Petty, Roger Joseph Manning Jr.

Tell me more: Paul McCann’s new album Alter Ego is a beautiful and deeply affecting listen inspired by the Irish artist’s emotions surrounding the death of his father in late 2018. The themes explored across the 12-track album include loss and love, with McCann extending his expert musical touch to other areas of grief including anger and confusion as well. Recording the album during the global pandemic was a challenge, but this singular moment in time also afforded McCann the opportunity to reach out to a number of legendary musicians to guest on the project; guitar great Jason Falkner (St. Vincent,

Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish, Beck, Air), Charlotte Hatherley (Bat for Lashes, Ash) and Gary Lucas (Jeff Buckley, Captain Beefheart) all guested on Alter Ego. The strong opener “The World Keeps Turning” offers up a melancholy-draped soundscape with layers of nuanced guitar and burgeoning vocal textures adding to the magic. The driving “Lost In This Moment” is an immediate connection; the alluring original blends reflective lyrics and a

propulsive power pop sound that lures in the listener with a single listen. The lovely acoustic Baroque ballad “Love Is All That Matters” and explosive melodic rocker “Divide and Conquer” are other early standouts on the album. The funk-flavored “Where Has The Music Gone,” elegant “Red River Run,” ambitious “Call Off the Dogs,” euphoric “Something Has Changed” and progressive closer “Weight of the Bow” impress on the disc’s last half. Entertaining Easter tips to make holiday hosting simple

Easter signals springtime and provides an opportunity to gather with loved ones to celebrate. However, hosting the get-together - whether brunch, lunch, or dinner - requires planning and preparation to ensure the event is enjoyable.

Consider these steps to prepare for Easter hosting duties, from the guest list and menu to the decor and activities for the kiddos.

Make a Guest List

When planning your gathering, consider how many people your space can accommodate. Ensure there’s a place for everyone to sit and eat, even if that means bringing in extra tables and chairs or designating a “kids’ table” so all the adults can sit together.

Once you know how many people you can invite - and have a seating plan - send out festive invitations or create a group on social media with your preferred guests to gather RSVPs.

Take Inventory of Necessities

Once your guest list is set, take inventory of serving dishes, utensils, linens, and glassware. Depending on the number of guests, you may need to invest in extra supplies or borrow from a friend or relative to ensure you have everything. If you don’t have enough of one set of plates and flatware, mixing and matching is trendy and can serve as an additional decor aspect.

Plan the Menu

Traditional favorites like ham or lamb are always a

hit when setting your menu. However, consider any diet accommodations that may need to be made for any vegan or vegetarian guests. Dishes featuring eggs, carrots, ginger, and other ingredients that call spring to mind, like quiches, soups, galettes, and more, can perfectly complement the traditional main course. Serving the meal family-style with platters and bowls for everyone to share or hosting a potluck with guests bringing assigned dishes can help reduce the stress of preparing the entire meal yourself.

Decorate in Advance

From a seasonal wreath on the front door to a welldressed table complete with place settings and a festive centerpiece, getting your decorating done early can reduce stress on the day of your event and get you into the proper mindset for the celebration. A pastel or lightcolored hue can add to the springtime vibes, and flowers, seasonal fruits in bowls, and decorated eggs can all add to the tablescape.

Keep the Kids in Mind

While the meal is likely a

highlight of the event for many, the younger guests often look forward to the activities, such as decorating eggs or an Easter egg hunt. You can hard-boil eggs in advance and set up a decorating station, complete with dyes, markers, stickers, and more. Or, while you’re finishing up inside, designate another adult or older child to hide pre-filled plastic eggs around the yard (weather permitting) and manage the hunt.

Fighting Human Trafficking

As part of a joint investigation through the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force (SDHTTF), California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the results of Operation Better Pathways today. As a result of the multi-day operation, 48 individuals were arrested for alleged human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and other criminal offenses, and 41 individuals — including eight children — were offered support services. Two firearms were recovered, including a ghost gun. The arrests have been referred to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, San

Diego City Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California for potential criminal prosecution.

“Human trafficking and sexual exploitation destroy lives,” said Attorney General Rob Bonta. “Through Operation Better Pathways, we’re fighting to hold perpetrators accountable and help survivors get a fresh start. I’m thankful to all of our partners on the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force for their collaboration, and I’m proud of our office’s work to help uplift vulnerable Californians. When we work together, we get results. At the California Department of Justice, we’re always ready to answer the call regarding standing up for public safety.”

“The San Diego Police Department is a proud member of the Human Trafficking Task Force. We will use every tool to rescue survivors and hold traffickers accountable,” said San Diego

Police Chief David Nisleit.

“Operation Better Pathways is a reminder that the fight against human trafficking is an endeavor that requires continued collaboration and our ongoing commitment.”

“I personally visited the National City and San Diego City locations that this

operation targeted, and what I saw was appalling,” said San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan.

“Young women being openly trafficked in broad daylight, with individuals paying for sex lined up like they were going through a fast-food drive-thru.

If you or someone you know is a victim of human trafficking or is in immediate danger, call (888) 373-7888 or text BeFree (233733).” Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 if you, or someone you know, has suffered sexual abuse.”

Groups Pressure Feds to Tighten Air-Quality Standards

is taking public comment through the end of March.

Patrick Drupp, director of climate policy for the Sierra Club, said the World Health Organization has called for an even lower standard of five.

“We have the solutions to address it; we have scientific evidence to address it. We have all the moral imperative to address it,” Drupp stressed. “This is something they really have to do to ensure that people actually breathe clean air.”

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing new rules on soot to clean up the nation’s air.

Advocates say it is a step in the right direction but does not go far enough. The current rules allow 12 micrograms per cubic meter. The EPA wants to take it down to nine or 10, but clean-air groups want it lowered to eight.

Monica Embrey, California energy campaign director for the Sierra Club, said a standard of eight micrograms would save 24,000 lives a year.

“Soot is a deadly mix of metals, chemicals, and substances that are so small, they can be inhaled into our lungs and enter our bloodstreams,” Embrey pointed out. “Which can cause various health issues,

including respiratory diseases, cancers, and death.”

The fine particulate matter that can trigger asthma comes from vehicle exhaust, heavy industry, oil and gas sites, wildfire smoke, and blowing dust. The Trump

administration overrode scientific recommendations and left the standard unchanged. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said tighter standards would stifle manufacturing and hurt the economy. The agency

Tens of millions of Californians live in counties already exceeding the existing air-quality standard, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Diego counties in Southern California; Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, and Tulare counties in the Central Valley; and Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties in the Bay Area.

ESOTERIC ASTROLOGY AS NEWS FOR WEEK MARCH 1 – 7, 2023

PISCES - REVEALING THE LIGHT OF TRUTH

Monday at sunset the Hebrew feast of Purim begins. This is the feast of Queen Esther as she tells the truth of her culture and identity. Her truth saves her people. T he twelve signs of the zodiac each reveal a different level, angle and pathway of Light. In Pisces, the work of the Soul is revealed in the words “Pisces is the Light of the world, ending the darkness of matter”.

Pisces is the last zodiacal sign, holding all gifts, abilities and seeds of the preceding signs. Pisces offers those seeds to Aries at spring equinox. Pisces also holds the sufferings of humanity which explains the otherworldliness of Pisces. Often, we see this otherworldliness in the behaviors of the those born under the light of Pisces (Sun, moon, ascendant).

Pisces is the sign of love, sacrifice and of giving. Pisces does not feel at home in the world of matter. Their keynote is “I have left the Father’s House of Oneness, & turning back (to earth, to humanity), I save.”

The true spiritual history of our world is that long ago, each of us responded to the sacrificial call, symbolized by Pisces, to “to and maketheself a useful instrument and save the world”. And so we “went forth, descended into matter, making ourselves instruments of Goodwill for the purpose of radiating to humanity, the kingdoms and Earth, the Love the world seeks. Pisces produces that love. And thus “saves.”

Festival of Truth and Joy. Monday, at sunset, the Jewish feast of Purim begins. It is the “feast of truth and deliverance”. Queen Esther, in 5th century Persia, by revealing the truth about her culture and identity, saved her people from death. During Purim, a sweet pastry (filled with prunes, apricots or poppy seeds) called

RISA’S STARS

Hamantaschen (Haman is the villain in the story of Esther) is eaten. During Purim, there is joy and gratitude for the saving grace of G-d. In celebrating Purim, humanity, in our present times, must learn to save itself. It begins with the unveiling and recognition of truth, knowledge, our true history, identity and real science.

Tuesday, following the full moon (Pisces solar festival), Saturn enters Pisces. In Pisces we realize we must now recognize ourselves as the World Disciple and, as world saviors out task is to, “restore the Plan on Earth”. Saturn in Pisces next week. Here is a recipe for the sweet filled cookie Hamantaschen - https://www. bonappetit.com/recipe/ hamentaschen

ARIES: Rest and relaxation is most important. Retreat and a bit of solitude continue to be a need. No matter what you attempt, veils drop in front of you. That is the purpose of Pisces, a state of protection. Should you push forward, you only find clouds of confusion. Go slowly, use your heart, slip into a comforting environment (and shoes), and join in with Thich Nhat Hanh’s Bell Chant. And the Tibetan monk’s Oms. https:// plumvillage.org/library/chants/thegreat-bell-chant/

TAURUS: Your entire focus is on education, group work and the creation of a new era community. This is correct for it will be through intentionally working with community that humanity will be saved in the coming years. Only a few understand that Aquarius is humanity in community. There is also a need to tend to health and vitality to assure that the vision and leadership you offer to others

continues. Oxygen, homeopaths, cell salts, pure water and the Sun are needed.

GEMINI: The planets in Aquarius (serving the world), Pisces (saving the world), and in Aries (creating all things new) all call to you to enter into needed world work. This is how you are truly recognized, seen and remembered. If unable to be in the world you can offer daily invocative prayers for humanity’s salvation. During this upcoming full moon, care for, serve and tend to those around you with focus, dedication and love. Consider what it means to “live ardently and artfully.”

CANCER: Maintain simplicity this week. Tend to easy chores, seek help if needed. You must maintain vitality, health and strength. You’re called to create all things new. There’s a possibility however of restriction walking or accomplishing tasks or getting from here to wherever. Tend to knees, ankles and feet. The times call each of us to have strength of character and to focus on priorities. If traveling, be sure to wear the best of shoes.

LEO: Mars is not out of its retrograde shadow until March 17. Have you found yourself thinking, talking and working slower, having to redo, review, reassess and create a calm and patient sense of inner strength since October? What is occurring with you spiritually? Something unexpected, expansive, confusing or illuminating? It seems that soon traveling may be on the agenda. Wherever you travel, a new identity emerges creating new states of creativity. VIRGO: When the full moon is in Virgo, the Sun is in your opposite sign of Pisces. Oppositions creates

integrations. And so an integration takes place between your inner and outer worlds, between yourself and others – with those close to you, intimate friends, with those you work and live with and even enemies. Virgo and Pisces, like all opposite signs, shadow each other. The gifts each one possesses, the other needs. Thus the shadows of the moon eventually integrate into the light of the Sun. Then one is complete.

LIBRA: Is the unusual occurring in your life? With multiple Aquarius, Pisces and Aries planets, the elements of air, water and fire seem to be rushing into your life and workplace. You could be engulfed in aspirations or a flood of tears for something sad or joyful occurring. You could be learning to swim or fly in the air. You could be turning into one who saves the world. You could be lost, confused or realize you’re being refined, purified and prepared. What’s happening? You could realize you love someone you finally forgive!

SCORPIO: A new creativity should have slipped into your life, taking you by the hand, leading you to new interests and goals. Perhaps you are being asked to mingle a bit more among the world of artists, writers, musicians, performers so that you begin to identify more specifically as a highly creative person yourself and not just a dark stranger behind sunglasses wearing a long black coat in the bright and radiant sunlight. Spring is almost here. The daffodils are blooming. Can you see them?

SAGITTARIUS: Many opportunities for creativity should be flowing into your life. So many these days, you may feel overwhelmed. Don’t be. Some opportunities you will understand, some you won’t. Not yet.

Some are good, some maybe not. Some are for now, some later. As they continue to appear, you find yourself at home, or in the studio, creating protective barriers. Sometimes we just need to retreat, hide under covers and simply swim in warm waters towards a state of tranquility. A good idea indeed!

CAPRICORN: Because you are the zodiac’s traditionalist, I suggest following Purim traditions of making food and flower baskets, offering them to family and friends; giving (alms, money, three half-dollar coins) to the poor; and baking Hamantashen (https://www. bonappetit.com/recipe/ hamentaschen) cookies, threecornered pastry filled with poppy seeds or apricots or nuts and honey while reading from the Book of Esther, the only Old Testament book that does not mention G-d’s name.

AQUARIUS: Should you feel overtaken by money or finances, by health and healing, or by any sort of confusion in any area area of life, give yourself time to acclimate because something within you that is vital is unfolding and being refined. Create a daily schedule of activities and exercise. Keep close and careful tabs on money and finances. It’s possible you’ll be taken over by a sense that your life is transforming quickly. It is. Soon Pluto (the transformer) enters Aquarius. Life will never be the same after that.

PISCES: This full moon brings the hidden out into the open. It may be a new self-identity. Pisces offers something more than veils. It offers refuge. Speaking of veils, Pisces hides behind them for protection, peering out at times in order to know what’s real, what’s ahead, what came before and what just passed you by. Like Libra there may be floods of something new offered. It’s international. Get yourself thick boots, a warm sweater and a new car. A new expansive direction will be taken.

President Imposes Additional Discipline; Can President Scream?

Dear Kelly:

I had a hearing regarding a rules violation. I thought it was unfair and asked for an internal dispute resolution (“IDR”) meeting. My punishment from the board was a suspension of privileges. At the IDR, the President (the one that pursued the violation against me) showed up with the member I asked for, to conduct the IDR. The president then added to the board’s discipline by adding a fine, ordering me not to attend board meetings, and said all this would also apply to my wife! Is this Legal? I feel that I was tried twice - Once by the board and then by the president. B.G., Palm Desert

Dear B.G.: If the President was the complaining party, then the president should not have participated in the disciplinary hearing or the IDR meeting due to the president’s personal conflict of interest on the matter.

As to the additional disciplinary measures, the president has no individual authority. Per Civil Code Section 5855, only the board can impose discipline after written notice and a hearing. Also, many HOAs are erroneously suspending member voting rights as a disciplinary measure, but that is not allowed pursuant to Civil Code Section 5105(g)(1). Sorry B.G., but your board may need to remind the president that the board runs things, not

the president. Best, Kelly.

Dear Mr. Richardson: I spoke for my time in open forum inquiring about the status of some incomplete projects. The president screamed at me, calling me a liar and saying I was spreading misinformation to homeowners. Is this proper conduct for a president in Open Forum to scream at a homeowner? D.S., Irvine.

Dear D.S.: Open forum is the time for the board to listen, not argue or respond. The president’s response indicates a misunderstanding of the function of open forum. Yelling in a board meeting should never be acceptable behavior, no matter how strongly someone might disagree. Remember, you’re all neighbors, and you have to live together in peace. How is that possible when if the HOA allows such behavior?

Meeting conduct rules would help your HOA, and such conduct rules should apply to all attendees – including the president. HOA leaders need to model a high level of civility, and it sounds like this is not occurring in your association. Best to you and your association, Kelly.

Hi Kelly, is it true that a homeowner is accused of a violation cannot sue the HOA?

My HOA is accusing me of something that I didn’t do, and they want to fine me. I need to take them to court if necessary. I will not be fined

for something that I did not do. Is there a court remedy? Thanks, C.C., Redwood City.

Dear C.C.: You can sue your HOA for declaratory relief if you disagree with a disciplinary decision. However, before you take such a drastic step, consider if it’s truly worth it. Pursuant to Civil Code Section 5975, the prevailing party in

a dispute over enforcement of the governing documents is to be awarded their reasonable attorney fees. This could be a very expensive gamble. Consider the overall picture and decide whether the expense of your own attorney and the risk of an expensive adverse outcome, is worth it. Sincerely, Kelly.

California is Capturing & Storing Water from Storms

SACRAMENTO –

California is continuing to leverage recent actions and a historic $8.6 billion investment to ensure that water from storms is captured and conserved to help preserve supplies for communities, wildlife and the environment, and water users if dry conditions return – actions aligned with California’s Water Supply Strategy:

1. EXECUTIVE ORDER TO CAPTURE & CONSERVE

MORE WATER: Last week, Governor Newsom signed an Executive Order to help accelerate state efforts to capture storm runoff in wet years by facilitating groundwater recharge projects and other conservation measures.

2. FAST-TRACKING GROUNDWATER RECHARGE: The state is expanding groundwater recharge by at least 500,000 acre-feet in potential capacity – streamlining permits and $1 billion for groundwater recharge

projects for 88,000 more acre-feet per year.

3. MAXIMIZING STORMWATER CAPTURE: $176 million for 67 stormwater projects and streamlining permitting to take advantage of significant storm events.

4. EXPANDING STORAGE ABOVE & BELOW GROUND: California supports seven locally driven water storage projects that would expand the state’s capacity by 2.77 million acre-feet – about three times as much water as water Folsom Lake can hold. And California is working on expanding San Luis Reservoir by 135,000 acre-feet to store more storm runoff.

5. ADVANCING CLEAR, AMBITIOUS TARGETS: 142 actions to improve water resilience, bolster water supplies, and a roadmap for expanding urban stormwater capture capacity by 250,000 acre-feet adding 4 million acre-feet of water storage capacity.

6. MODERNIZING WATER INFRASTRUCTURE:

California is working on updating aging water conveyance systems across the state to safeguard longterm water reliability and help carry winter storm runoff into storage.

Leveraging a historic $8.6 billion committed by Governor Newsom and the Legislature to build water resilience, the state is taking aggressive action to prepare

for the impacts of weather whiplash on the state’s water supplies. Governor Newsom proposes an additional $202 million for flood protection and $125 million for drought-related actions.

The state will continue to optimize water storage to support environmental needs in the summer and allow for carryover storage for next year if the spring becomes

extremely dry. Additionally, the forecasted allocation could be adjusted if extreme dry conditions warrant. In addition to optimizing water storage, California continues accelerating investments in habitat restoration, including $52 million in grants announced last week to help restore and protect fish and wildlife habitats throughout California.

‘Immigrants Are Essential’ Fund to Support CA Immigration

California is home to 10.5 million immigrants, and the nonprofits serving them said they have been stretched to the limit over the past few years.

A new fund called “Immigrants are Essential” has been established to combat burnout in the sector. The Weingart Foundation and the California Community Foundation have each contributed $250,000 to start the fund, aiming to raise $1 million.

Rosie Arroyo, senior immigration program officer for the California Community Foundation, said the grants would help immigrants’ rights groups in the Los Angeles area support wellness programs, therapy, and more.

“Advocates express interest in receiving additional support by helping alleviate the

caseload for individuals, coaching opportunities, having a more flexible work schedule, compensated self-care,” Arroyo outlined.

The idea for the fund stems from a report released in December, which found widespread burnout among workers in immigrantserving nonprofits, leading to more significant staff turnover. The report also noted the sector is stretched thin. There are only about five immigrant-serving organizations per 100,000 noncitizen immigrants living in Los Angeles County.

Arroyo pointed out researchers interviewed 106 staff members from multiple immigrant organizations. More than half of those surveyed said they feel financially insecure, and 43% said they lack sufficient savings.

“About 70% of those surveyed expressed just exhaustion, personally

and professionally,” Arroyo reported. “Also, 60% of them also feel emotional exhaustion.”

The new fund

hopes to start accepting applications from nonprofits later this spring.

Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind Visits the Desert

“The Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind is the only accredited guide dog program serving Israel’s 24,000 blinded and visually impaired citizens, and the only such program in the entire Middle East,” said Mr. Leventhal. This year’s annual luncheon drew more than 150 guests. During the last 13 years, local supporters of this unique event once again gathered to hear about the latest developments at the Guide Dogs of Israel’s innovative training center in Israel.

Participating in the event were David Attal and his guide dog, Yellow, who traveled with him on the flight between Tel Aviv and Los Angeles.

Their innovative training techniques have had impressive results since the first “Guide Dog team” was launched in 1991. Since then, the Center has established 739 Guide Dog partnerships for people who cannot see, 17 PTSD Services for soldiers who have seen too much, and 382 Emotional Support Dogs for children. “That’s 1,138 lives that have been directly affected because of these amazing animals, but many others

The success of the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind goes to Rancho Mirage resident Helen Varon; she has brought the Guide Dogs of Israel to the desert since 2009. She graciously welcomed guests as they arrived for the luncheon and program, narrated by Dan McGrath, who once again served as Israel Guide Dog Centers emcee.

“The luncheon was more like a reunion, as it had been three years since the last event because of COVID requirements,” remarked Phyllis Eisenberg, a loyal supporter of the Israel Guide Dog Center.

guitar and sang along. This Arena is a super venue for these high-profile concerts.

Jimmy Buffett is coming up on March 7th, March 18th brings Grupo Arriesgado, and on March 24th, there will be big names in the Free Style Explosion concert. This is a super venue for these highprofile concerts; everyone has a good seat. Videos are shown of the band too.

New Bill Would Allow Compensation for Victims of Police Violence

Criminal justice reform groups are rallying behind a new bill that would make it easier for people hurt in encounters with police to get support from the California Victim Compensation Board.

Right now, most claimsaside from domestic violence or sexual assault - require that the person be identified as a victim in a police report.

Michelle Monterrosa’s brother Sean died at the hands of Vallejo Police in 2020. The officer was fired but never charged.

Monterrosa said the bill would help families like hers cope.

“And unfortunately,” said Monterrosa, “because our loved ones were killed the way they were, we’re not considered victims; they are not considered as victims. So therefore, we’re continuing the cycles of trauma and harm. The whole household is also a victim, you

know - we’re the ones who deal with the loss every day.”

The bill would exclude cases where the person inflicted “great bodily injury” in a law enforcement encounter before being killed.

Families or survivors could use evidence other than a police report to access the program, which assists with burial costs, medical bills, and counseling. The victim would be eligible regardless of whether the officer is arrested or convicted.

Cristine Soto DeBerry, founder and executive director of the nonprofit Prosecutors Alliance, oversaw a similar program in San Francisco and said the system needs to be more flexible and compassionate.

“We see families having to turn to GoFundMe pages and car washes to try and cover the cost of burying their loved one after an incident like this,” said Soto DeBerry.

“And that, to us, seems

inhumane and unnecessary.”

The California District Attorneys Association opposed a similar bill in last year’s legislative session, arguing the law would allow compensation

to perpetrators of crimes.

Soto DeBerry argued that the outreach is a win-win.

“Supporting families through this process is a smart public safety strategy,”

said Soto DeBerry, “and one that strengthens legitimacy rather than undermining it.” Senate Bill 838 is currently in the Senate Rules Committee.

District Lead Security Officer named Riverside County Educator of the Year

–Dwight Taylor served in multiple campus security roles in the Moreno Valley Unified School District. In 2017, he was named the MVUSD Classified Employee of the Year and was ultimately selected as the 2017 Riverside County Classified Employee of the Year.

Six years later, Dwight now serves as a District Lead Officer (Campus Security Officer II) and was recently selected as MVUSD’s 2023 Site Support Employee of the Year. On Wednesday, he was surprised that he is being recognized again at the county level as the 2023 Riverside County Site Support Employee of the Year.

“Thank you to everybody in this room, and for always helping me to be positive,” said Dwight Taylor to the gathered crowd of family, colleagues, and board members immediately after receiving the award.

“For all those, we serve in this district, we know what they face, and I try to be somebody who does something.”

Dwight Taylor - 2023 Riverside County Site Support Employee of the Year

In his position, Dwight Taylor supports the educational efforts of the students and staff by providing a safe and secure place for teachers

to teach and for students to learn. Dwight’s personalized approach includes serving as a coach and a mentor who advocates, de-escalates, and collaborates while building his skills as an empathic listener, restorative justice supporter, and servant leader. He is also involved as a 2nd Vice President for CSEA Chapter 410 in MVUSD and serves as a Freedom Writer teacher. The Riverside County Educators of the Year are selected from the more than 36,000 educational employees. The rigorous application process starts with nominations by teachers, classified employees, and school district administrators throughout the county. Applications are then submitted to the Riverside County Office of Education, where an outside selection committee selects the honorees before the county superintendent’s announcement.

Along with the 2023 Riverside County Teachers of the Year named previously, all 2023 Riverside County Educators of the Year will be honored at the Celebrating Educators Luncheon, set for Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the Riverside Convention Center.

NFL Legend Emmett Smith at the Rancho Mirage Speakers Series

Story and Photos by Pat Krause

National football legend

Emmett Smith became the second celebrity in the 2023 Rancho Mirage Speakers Series, Legends of Sports. This event was held at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa on Tuesday, February 21st. Chairs were set up on the floor in front of the stage. Everyone had a close view of Emmett and his interviewer.

Sibley Scoles did an excellent job as an interviewer. She questioned Emmett Smith about his life and career. He talked about his records as a runner. He noted that records are meant to be broken. His records stand today. He said his dream as a young boy was to be a Cowboy football player. He could not have

envisioned then what his life would be like as a man.

Smith said, first, he wanted to thank everyone for being here and for asking to be a part of this series. He said he felt blessed to be asked. He mentioned his father passed away last week, and the funeral would be Friday, only a few days after he was here. He was very thankful for all his father’s help before and during his career. Words of wisdom he imparts to his kids.

He said no one makes it alone to be on top of their chosen field. It takes the grace of God and the help of family, friends, and a village of other people. He said it was the help of many for a kid from humble beginnings to achieve all he did. He discovered that his

dad was also a good running back but did not have the opportunities he had. His dad’s teachings make him the player and the man he is today. He said he had a dream, and it took lots of hard work to make it come true. He said it was a dream come true when he was recruited by the Cowboys. He was intimidated by all the great players and wondered why he was chosen. At 5 foot 9, he was considered too small for the sport. He had to prove them wrong. Courage, determination, and God’s grace allowed him to do what he loved and excel. They talked about his time on Dancing with the Stars. Once he figured out the steps, he said it was easy. You have to understand whatever you

do to know how to do it. He learned that when he had to learn the football playbooks. He spoke about his son, who he says has great potential as a football player. He always encouraged his kids to do the things they love and are good at. His son was born on his birthday, so birthdays are for him, and he doesn’t celebrate his own anymore.

Smith spoke about his retirement and how he knew it was time. He said he cried once in the locker room when he saw the jerseys. He said he was offered 3 million dollars to return to Football and play for a different team. He turned it down, and that’s when he knew it was time to quit; besides, Buffalo is too cold. He loves retirement

and plays miniature golf in his downtime. Enjoys the time with his family now. The questions and answers kept everything lively. Emmett has a great sense of humor and kept the audience laughing throughout the event. He left the stage with these words. Love yourself, be confident in who you are, and run your own way. Don’t let others limit you, and have faith. His words make him a great mentor to all. The winner of three super bowls, MVP awards, and honored by the Hall of Fame in 2010. His next step should be to be a motivational speaker. He spoke with such knowledge about life, the ups and downs people experience, and how to deal with them.
