Wilde’s canon is a bit of a short read compared to England’s other literary giants. But the plays he wrote became classics

of Victorian polite society; and the play genre known as comedy of manners and drawing room styled plays. A brilliant intellect, and a master of wit infused with a poet’s appreciation for words, Wilde relished elegant dialogue, and sophisticated situations both on and off the stage. He was a true sybarite. Which unfortunately, led to his fall from grace.

Is “Medicare For All” for You?

If you are familiar with our health care system, you know that it relies heavily on the private sector. Even the Affordable Care Act uses private health insurance companies to offer these health plans. According to a recent Gallup poll, over 11% of the US population still does not have health coverage. sponsored programs like Medicaid, CHIP, and Medicare that provide subsidized or free health care to those who qualify using taxpayer dollars. Many of the un-insureds do not sign up for coverage until they reach a hospital. Bernie plans to make these government programs available to everyone, not just those who are eligible under current laws. “Medicare for all” and “single-payer” are synonymous. The end goal of both is to have the healthcare industry run and regulated by the government and take private health insurance companies out of the mix. This would be achieved by using taxpayer money to completely fund all medical costs in the US, giving everyone access to health care. The most important question to answer is “Are we willing to destroy a system which has provided the Best healthcare in the world?” & “Will the long wait times for care be viewed as satisfactory in our country, who is known for wanting everything yesterday?” Spanning over two decades, to see how wait times are affected by a single-payer system. Canada found that in 2017, the average wait time after getting referred from your general practitioner to a specialist was about 21.2 weeks. In Sweden wait times to see a specialist are from 30-90days. Imagine placing 328 Million people in the US, into those wait lines. Couple this with reports of Doctor shortages. Due to long wait times in other countries, many people who have serious illnesses come to our country to get more timely healthcare and to save their lives.

Today, health care is not considered a right in the US (which is a debate within itself). The single most significant benefit of switching over to “Medicare For All” is that everyone has health coverage and access to the coverage they need without having to worry about the costs, however, there is a Cost attached to everything. Is Canadian healthcare free? Reportedly Canadians pay 42.5% of their income in taxes. There is no “Free Lunch.” Since our tax system is complex and one in which the Rich can hire consultants to lower their cost for taxes, it would appear to me that the average Americans, who are not privileged to have experts find tax loopholes, would be left with paying more than their fair share. The money has to come from somewhere, right? If you think you pay too much in taxes now, imagine how much it would cost the government to provide health coverage to the entire population of the US, (328 Million). We only have to compare our Country’s tax rates to those who have singlepayer systems. A single-payer health care system would be financially draining on the government. Not only would more money be distributed, but there would be additional costs and positions needed within the government to run and manage the healthcare sector. This would take funds away from other vital programs like education and infrastructure. Government run programs will never be less compared to Companies competing in Open Competition. Entirely shifting the health

care system in the US is no easy task. There are so many moving parts under the current system that even the slightest change in policy can set off a chain reaction, which is something we saw with the Affordable Care Act. The government administered the portion of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has taken years to become more accessible to navigate. The “wait times” to speak with a representative have been improved; however, this was a nightmare for a few years, especially during Open enrollment each year, a short period between Oct. 15th and Dec. 7th, when the entire country must enroll. The pros would include Coverage for All, and by having access to Preventative care services, which is a proven way to help reduce significant illness, however with the many programs offered now, we already have this access. Single Payor would be the highest tax shift ever in the US. The majority of Americans have health insurance through their employer. Employersponsored coverage is mandatory under the Affordable Care Act if a company has 50 or more employees. For larger corporations, these additional costs may be feasible. Single payer would eliminate Employer-sponsored coverage and be the death of competition. The take away is that Competition drives innovation; it’s the sole reason that the US has come so far in terms of science and technology. Every medical provider wants to have the newest and best medical technology to increase their

Ethiopian Airlines announced that it will temporarily ground its fleet of four 737 MAX 8 planes as a “safety precaution.” The aircraft, which was virtually brand new, crashed just five months after an identical Boeing model operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air plummeted into the Java Sea, killing 189 passengers and crew. Shared concerns over the 737 MAX have prompted China’s Civil Aviation Administration to place a temporary halt on MAX flights. Bloomberg reported last year that the plane is prone to making “abrupt dives” due to a faulty flight-monitoring system. The potential defect prompted two pilot unions to accuse Boeing of failing to properly explain a safety feature on the 737 MAX 8 aircraft in their manuals. The company has since issued a safety update in November, warning of a possible fault in the plane’s sensor that could send the aircraft into a violent nosedive.

After a Women’s Day tweet sticking up for her “transgender sisters,” Milano was asked whether she is transgender herself. The actress responded, saying she’s all that and then some. “I’m trans. I’m a person of color. I’m an immigrant. I’m a lesbian. I’m a gay man. I’m the disabled,” she tweeted. “I’m everything…. Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know or understand. No one wants to hurt you. We are all just looking for our happily ever after.” Even uber-woke leftists took a shot at Milano. “Oppression and intersectionality isn’t an outfit that you decide to put on whenever you like,” activist

Zellie Imani tweeted. Milano hit back at the critics. “I’m glad this tweet invoked conversation. I’m sorry it offended some,” she wrote. “Nuance is important and literal interpretation is not always intended. And I can identify with and not identify as. Both are powerful.” Milano has been an activist almost as long as she’s been an actress, advocating for AIDS relief in the 1980s and 90s, then for vegetarianism and vaccinations in the 2000s and the #MeToo movement more recently. Milano has also been a vocal opponent of President Trump, calling the president a “piece of sh*t” over his immigration policy, and the iconic red ‘MAGA’ hat “the new white hood.”

Former Soldiers Battle Administration Over Climate Change By Desert Star Staff JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Hurricane Florence left approximately $3.6 billion of damage at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. And a group of former military leaders and advisers say the partisan battle over climate change could harm our troops and national security in the future. Retired Rear Admiral David Titley will testify before a Congressional panel on Wednesday. He is one of 58 who penned a letter pushing back against what they say is the administration’s attempt to downplay the impact of climate change. The review by the 12-member panel will be led by climate-change critic William Happer. The administration’s official position is that climate change is a threat to national security. But Titley and his comrades say the appointment of Happer to the National Security Council and a leaked document say otherwise. “The internal documents that were leaked show, in the

administration’s own words, that this so-called review is meant to be adversarial in nature and to undermine the well-established fundamental scientific underpinnings of climate science which have been established for well over a century,” Titley said. Titley provided training and recommendations for a U.S. Army tactical unit based in Fort Bragg while others toured damage to Camp Lejeune caused by Florence last September. The former meteorologist said it’s important to prepare soldiers for extreme weather events that are impacting bases and installations in a number of ways, including increased damage from flooding. Extreme weather events and warmer temperatures have the potential to affect base training and testing by causing more “black flag” days when outdoor training is suspended, Titley said. He said a lack of training and preparation presents dangerous conditions for troops, and it’s important for national security that

Arkansas Awaits Details of Trump’s HIV Prevention Program

By Desert Star Staff LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Public-health advocates in Arkansas are still waiting to hear the details of a recently announced federal initiative aimed at ending new HIV infections in the U.S. During his State of the Union address in February, President Donald Trump announced a plan designed to cut new infections by 75 percent in five years and 90 percent in 10 years. Arkansas is one of seven states with high rates of the deadly virus where the program will be focused. Cornelius Mabin, president and CEO at the health education group Arkansas RAPPS, said while the state does have one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the country, they have only heard sketchy details of what exactly the plan entails. “The plan that the Trump administration is talking about is to really look out into more of the rural parts

of Arkansas or the rural parts of the state, where we do have some issues with people finding care, and continuing in care and finding clinicians and facilities out in those areas,” Mabin said. Arkansas RAPPS is a foundation that operates programs across the state to treat and prevent HIV/ AIDS, hepatitis C and other infectious diseases. The president’s program is aimed at preventing new cases of HIV/AIDS, focusing initially in Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and South Carolina, as well as 48 “high-burden” counties. Mabin said the rate of HIV/AIDS in Arkansas falls disproportionately on minority and LGBTQ populations. “According to our epidemiologist, we have 5,380 individuals who live with HIV here in Arkansas,” he said. “We do know that primarily people of color, blacks,

Ten more have opened since then, and another three are in development or newly launching. Federman says most SSPs provide a number of other services that keep the public healthier, including disease testing and Hepatitis A and B vaccinations. However, she notes most

AZ Prosecutor Convicts Legal Marijuana Patients on Drug Charges By Desert Star Staff PRESCOTT, Ariz. — A technical glitch in Arizona’s medical marijuana law is landing some card-carrying cannabis patients in jail. But a proposed new law could address that pitfall. Law enforcement officials in Yavapai County have arrested and convicted at least two people carrying stateissued medical marijuana cards on drug charges. But Analise Ortiz, campaign communications strategist with the ACLU of Arizona, said a bill pending in the state Legislature would resolve this legal technicality. “Yavapai County Attorney Shelia Polk has continued to stand by these prosecutions, so people are still at risk of arrest and

prosecution,” Ortiz said. “This bill proposes amending that definition, so that there is no distinction between marijuana and cannabis.” Ortiz explained the prosecutor is interpreting the current law as allowing the medical use of marijuana in its plant form, but not products made from it, which are classified as illegal cannabis. She said Yavapai County, a mostly rural area between Phoenix and Flagstaff, is the only jurisdiction in the state March 13, 2019

Ortiz added Polk was an outspoken opponent of medical marijuana when the measure was put on the ballot through a citizen’s initiative. “We believe that when the voters passed the Medical Marijuana Act in 2010, that they intended for patients to be able to use this medicine in the form that’s most helpful to them and the easiest for them to consume,” she said.

“And so, we believe that needs to be corrected.” Of the two people charged, one was convicted and is serving a three-year sentence, while charges are pending against the other. If convicted, that person could face up-to 10 years in jail. The bill, HB 2149, has passed out of committee and is pending in the Arizona House of Representatives.

Report: Biofuels Policy Backfires, Hurts Environment

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A new report on the nation’s Renewable Fuel Standard shows multiple ways the policy has had major unintended consequences

for the environment. Researchers from University of California-Davis, Kansas State University and the University of Wisconsin found that promoting the biofuel ethanol drove up the

prices of corn and soybeans – which led farmers to plant a lot more of those crops. David DeGennaro, agriculture policy specialist with the National Wildlife Federation, says that led to

the conversion of 1.6 million new acres into farmland between 2009 and 2016. “By taking what was wildlife habitat and putting that into industrial crop production, you release a huge amount of carbon from the soil that has been stored there for decades,” says DeGennaro. “You destroy wildlife habitat, and the process of farming sends a lot of fertilizers and soil and other pollution downstream.” The Environmental Protection Agency is about to revamp the RFS, as it’s known, and will issue a proposal this spring and a final rule by this fall. Supporters of the existing standard say the higher corn and soybean prices have increased incomes for farmers and that ethanol has reduced U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Aaron Smith, professor of agricultural and resource economics at UC Davis, says he hopes this study will inform

the debate over how to fix the RFS – and encourage policymakers to de-emphasize ethanol and promote alternative biofuels, such as those made from grasses, waste oil and waste wood. “Debates within EPA surrounding the Renewable Fuel Standard have been mostly debates between Big Corn and Big Oil, and the environmental interests have been left out,” says Smith, “even though by law, EPA is required to account for the environmental cost when it is recommending changes to the policy.” The report estimates that the plowing over of virgin land has sent as much carbon into the atmosphere as the annual output of seven coal-fired power plants. Researchers also found the policy has led to the destruction of thousands of acres of milkweed, which is the primary food source for monarch butterflies.

Report Calls Biofuels Standard an Environmental Disaster By Desert Star Staff NEW YORK – A new report says the push for biofuels is causing serious environmental damage. The Renewable Fuel Standard or RFS was intended to reduce reliance on oil imports and cut air pollution. It requires that all gasoline for transportation sold in the United States contain at least 10 percent ethanol. But the report from the National Wildlife Federation says that has led to the conversion of 1.6 million acres of grassland,

shrubland, wetlands and forests to agricultural production, including land here in New York. Aaron Smith is an agricultural economics professor at the University of California, Davis. Smith says that conversion has serious environmental consequences. “That means that you are converting habitat that may have been inhabited by various species into cropland,” says Smith. “That means you’re using more water, using more nitrogen, both of which contribute to pollution.”

Supporters of the Renewable Fuel Standard say it has reduced oil imports and boosted farm income, but critics note that the land-use changes are releasing 14 million metric tons of carbon a year, accelerating climate change. According to David DeGennaro, agriculture policy specialist for the National Wildlife Federation, when the RFS was established in 2007, corn and soybeans were supposed to be bridges to the development of cleaner fuels. “The original law had

envisioned that we would start using an array of other things, such as grasses or wood waste or waste oils, that wouldn’t have the same impact on the landscape,” says DeGennaro. “But that transition has never occurred.” The report says, in addition to converting new cropland to corn and soybeans, the RFS led farmers to switch existing cropland to corn on almost seven million acres a year between 2008 and 2016. DeGennaro points out that the Environmental

Protection Agency must reset the standard for ethanol in gasoline by November 30 of this year. “They could use that as a real opportunity to improve the program and move it in the right direction,” says DeGennaro. “Or, they could double down and say we haven’t been getting those other fuels, so we’re just going to focus on the corn- and soybased fuels, and that would be a real step backward.” The EPA’s proposal for a new standard is expected to be released this spring.

Federal Protections On the Way Out for Gray Wolves By Desert Star Staff LARAMIE, Wyo. - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it will remove Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in all lower 48 states. Gray wolves in the Northern Rockies were officially delisted in 2008, and in Wyoming it is legal to kill wolves outside the Yellowstone ecosystem, or in about 90 percent of the state. In many parts of the western United States, said wildlife biologist Eric Molvar, director of the Western Watersheds Project, wolves essentially are absent, and the animal is just starting to be re-established in limited areas. “But across most of the United States, wolves are incredibly rare,” he said, “so, taking them off the

endangered species list before they’ve been fully recovered is, from a scientific standpoint, ludicrous.” Historic gray wolf populations in North America reached 2 million, but were nearly driven to extinction by the early 1900s. The species won federal protection in 1974 and, today, roughly 5,500 wolves live in the continental United States. The Trump administration has decided the species has fully recovered and no longer needs protections, and groups representing farmers and ranchers have praised the move. Molvar said the livestock industry has been working to delist wolves for years because native predators threaten their profitability on public lands, especially

in western states. “On Western public lands,” he said, “the livestock industry needs to learn to coexist with wolves and every other native species that the public has an interest in having out on our public lands.” Molvar added that the absence of wolves across much of the West is in part responsible for ecological imbalances and the spread of chronic wasting disease. When wolves were brought back to Yellowstone, he said, deer and elk populations dispersed, allowing for rebounds of streamside willows, cottonwoods and songbirds. ‘The Favourite’ Now On DVD

Queen Anne was the last Stuart monarch to rule. She suffered from gout, eye problems and though she had 17 pregnancies, none of her offspring survived. On August 12, 1714, she died of a stroke at the age of 49. She was a Queen, but her life was not one to be envied. In the Oscar-nominated film “The Favourite,” now on DVD, England is at war with the French. The monarch, Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), is frail due to gout and ill health, so her friend and companion Sarah (Rachel Weisz) handles much of the governing duties. Things change when Abigail Hill (Emma Stone) enters the picture. Due to her father’s gambling debts, Abigail has been reduced to menial jobs, and now she’s been sent to work at the royal palace. She is first assigned to work in the kitchen. She is clever, hardworking and pleasant and eventually, Sarah takes her under her wing. In time Abigail also becomes close to the queen which upsets Sarah. Then it is a tug of war for Anne’s affections.

Who will be her “favourite?” Besides the reimagined drama that ensues in the threeway feminine relationships, the film cleverly takes a humorous look at what might have happened at court. For example, the men do all sorts of strange things like racing ducks in the hallways and betting on which duck will be victorious. In the 18th century, cultivated men wore more makeup than the women and sported fanciful oversized wigs. This look is more accurate than the storyline and intrigue featuring the queen, Abigail, and Sarah. And while Queen Anne, Sarah and Abigail were actual people, the storyline in “The Favourite” ain’t necessarily so. The director and screenwriters have cleverly reimagined their relationships and intrigues. The director also creates a dance sequence that is humorous, but not in tune with the time period. Olivia Colman garnered the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Anne. Her performance in “The Favourite” was nuanced, a

blend of comedy, drama, and sorrow. Her Oscar was well deserved, even though Glenn Close was predicted to win this time after seven nominations. When she was given the golden trophy, Coleman looked out into the audience and sincerely said, “Glenn Close, you’ve been my idol so long, and this is not how I wanted it to be.”

“The Favourite” was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) with a screenplay by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. The lush production design was by Fiona Crombie with period costumes by Sandy Powell. “The Favourite” is rated R, with a running time of 1 hour 59 minutes. The DVD was just released

for “The Favourite” this month and features interviews with the stars, the director and others who worked on the film. If you haven’t had the chance to see the nominated films, many are now available on DVD. You can rent or buy DVDs for “A Star Is Born,” “Black Klansman,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Black Panther.” Hopefully “Vice,” “Roma” and “Green Book” will be released on DVD soon.

won efforts are recognized. March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, highlighting the contributions people with disabilities are making in Iowa, and across the country. That can often mean

working and thriving in the community you call home, according to Brooke Lovelace, executive director of the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council. “We’re all people first, and no matter what type of background or what type of abilities you do have, that’s important to keep in mind, that we’re people first – before you can attribute anything else to a characteristic of the person,” she states. More than 350,000 Iowans live with a developmental disability, which is defined as a condition developed before age 22

Awards, Awards & More Awards – The Other Ceremonies Awards weekend kicked off Friday in an informal, but elegant luncheon on the patio of the Mondrian Hotel where the International Press Academy (IPA) under the leadership of its President, Mirjana Van Blaricom, held its 23rd Annual Satellite Awards honoring the outstanding achievements of 2018. IPA is a global association of professional entertainment journalists representing a multitude of print, broadcast, and digital media. On the next day, after years of rain and windy conditions, the sun god thankfully smiled upon the beautiful Santa Monica beaches where a cluster of tents seemed to spring up overnight for the 34th Film Independent Spirit Awards, honoring the best independent films of 2018. This annual celebration recognizes independent, artistdriven films with a unique vision and made with limited budgets. The subject matter is often provocative and embodies originality, which many times cannot come to fruition under the auspices of a big studio. The Independent Spirit Awards recognizes these achievements and promotes the finest films of the year to a wider audience. Televised live from the main tent, this is a much more informal event where stars are not required to arrive bedecked in thousands of dollars in designer gowns and outrageously expensive jewelry. This annual event, which began as a small grassroots program, has grown into one of the most anticipated film events of the year. Honorees, presenters, guests, and journalists show up from all parts of the globe to honor these outstanding

men and women at this assemblage of talented writers, producers, directors, and actors. This year’s host was the adorable Aubrey Plaza, whose wit and charm were a delight as compared to the year Sarah Silverman hosted who brought the proceedings down to a below the gutter level. Plaza was lots of fun and kept the proceedings moving in a brisk, never a dull moment format. The attendees, most of whom walked the Red Carpet, could kick back and relax and actually enjoy themselves much more so than the more formal Academy Awards ceremony, which would take place the next day. A sampling of some of the winners includes, Glenn Close, who won for Best Female Lead for The Wife, Ethan Hawke won for Best Male Lead for First Reformed, Barry Jenkins picked up another win for his If Beale Street Could Talk, Boots Riley scored for Best First Picture with Sorry To Bother You, which he wrote and directed, Alfonso Cuarón received yet another prize for Roma in the Best Foreign Language category, Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade got the Best First Screenplay nod, Regina King scored Best Supporting Female for If Beale Street Could Talk, with

“The Judas Kiss”

Continued from Page 1 the English law books in 1967. “The Judas Kiss”, written by playwright Hare, is deftly directed by Boston Court’s co-artistic director Michael Michetti, and, boldly explores Hare’s raison d’etre for his roman a clef story. Act One of the play is set in the Cadogan Hotel in London, in 1895. At curtain up, Michetti’s staging sets the tone of Hare’s drama and its relationship with the world of. sexuality We find hotel bellman Arthur (Matthew Campbell Dowling and fetching housemaid Phoebe (Mara Klein) ‘starkers’ beneath the sheets of the suite rented by Oscar Wilde (Rob Nagle, in a fabulous, performance). A knock on the door, sends Phoebe and Arthur scrambling to retrieve their clothes; scattered about the floor. Sandy Moffat (Will Dixon), Concierge-extraordinaire enters and sternly surveys the room giving Arthur and Phoebe glowering looks and instructions to clean up the suite before abruptly turning on his heel leaving Oscar’s first lover an anxious Robert Ross (Darius De La Cruz); patiently waiting outside the door for Oscar to arrive. Ross is making sure that the reluctant-to-leaveEngland Oscar, is safely away into exile on the Continent before the police can arrest him to stand trial for breaking England’s ‘gross indecency’ statute of homosexuality. Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas, a spoiled, petulant, weak, young man of privilege and the current lover of Wilde (Colin Bates) bursts into the suite looking for Wilde with important information involving their relationship. When Wilde eventually does arrive he informs everyone that he has no intention of fleeing to France. He’s staying put despite the risks. To divulge any more of Act One would diminish the impact of Hare’s story and Michetti’s, crisp, creative directorial touches. Suffice it to say, there are plenty of moments of declarations and recriminations by Wilde, Lord “Bosie”, and Ross for the audience to relish. Act Two takes place two years later in 1897 in The Villa

Giudice, in Naples Italy. Wilde has served his prison sentence. Now, however, we see a weary, chastened, and resigned Oscar, who is in a mood to review his life in discussions with “Lord Bosie” (his betrayer) and Bosie’s new

boy-toy Galileo Mosconi (Kurt Kanazawa) who speaks only in Italian. Nagle’s highly nuanced, immersive, tour de force performance including gestures, pacing, and his modulated vocal delivery, are gems in

their own right and worth the price of admission alone. It’s obvious that Oscar’s zest for the world of endless parties, gourmet food, and the lifestyle of a hedonist is now behind him. What Wilde also left behind for us to enjoy are his epigrams and a plethora of witticisms. Two of my favorites of his are: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken” and “I can resist everything except temptation”, words he really took to heart. He died in 1900 at the tender age of 46 from meningitis. For me, the meat and beauty of this intriguing play and production lies is the performance of its talented ensemble cast who are always in their on-stage moments. However, as talented as this cast is the evening belongs to Rob Nagle as Oscar Wilde. His astonishing performance is a true star turn worthy and of the great Noel Coward’s comment about talent. One has to have “star quality” to make it in this business. Nagle’s stamina is stunning in its execution. He

is on stage in Acts One and Two for over an hour and a half; delivering an actor master class on how to hold an audience in his thrall. Good writing is a must for actors. Great writing elevates the performance of everyone in the production. The technical credits for “The Judas Kiss” are first rate. The creative team led by director Michetti includes a set design by Korean designer Se Hyun Oh; the outstanding Costume designs of Diane K. Graebner are highly detailed and spot on for the Victorian period. The lighting design is provided by David Hernandez, with Peter Bayne, composer and Sound Designer, Courtney Lynne Dusenberry as Props Designer; Shannon Hutchins, Wig Designer, and Accent Coach Nike Doukas complete the creative team. “The Judas Kiss” is an impressive production that makes for a splendid evening of theatre that performs at the Boston Court Theatre, Pasadena, through March 24, 2019.

Chinese Soybean Tariff Spells Trouble for Ohio Farmers By Nathan Reineck/ Broadcast version by Mary Schuermann Kuhlman Reporting for the Kent State-Ohio News Connection Collaboration Nearly a year after the start of a dramatic trade war between the U.S. and China, high tariffs are preventing Ohio farmers from selling many of their soybean crops, costing farmers their largest export to China. “Just in our industry, that one commodity has cost farmers millions of dollars on lost income and revenue,” says Jack Irvin, a federal lobbyist with the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. The trade war started last March with President Donald Trump’s introduction of steel tariffs, which he enacted with the intent of boosting the U.S. steel industry. Chinese trade officials responded with a 25 percent tariff of their own on U.S. soybeans. The tariff came as a shock to many farmers across the nation after 25 years of China’s increased purchasing of soybeans. Every third row of soybeans was going there, says Ben Klick, an Ohio farmer and member of the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association. China has consistently relied on large amounts of U.S. soybeans to supply its pork economy. Soybeans are commonly used in feed for pigs throughout the country. Klick says he was lucky

to get his soybeans to market before the tariffs were enacted. He says he still has other products he can sell, but unfortunately, some other farmers didn’t share in his luck. Those who didn’t get their yields out in time have kept most of their soybeans in storage, waiting for the tariffs to be dropped. Now, China has moved to buying soybeans from Argentina and Brazil, countries with growing agricultural sectors. Klick says the vast amount of soybeans imported to China from these two countries could boost them into top spots. Klick adds he is worried because Argentina and Brazil can already plant crops more often than the U.S. and, with a few infrastructural improvements, they could take most of the market share. “I know this trade war will end eventually, but, when it does, the issue that I see is will we, as farmers, be able to regain our access to China’s soybean import market,” Klick says. This would prove a drastic setback, as Ohio farmers would lose a third of their buyers if they can’t win Chinese buyers back. As farmers are getting ready to plant the next crop of soybeans, they don’t know if they can expect any trade with China, since the two countries have reached no trade deal. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture

show soybean exports are down more than 90 percent under the trade dispute and U.S. farmers lost nearly $8 billion in the past year. Steel production in the U.S. rose about 5 percent last year after tariffs on foreign steel were increased 25 percent. While the tariffs have helped the U.S. steel industry grow, their impact reaches beyond just farmers. Irvin points out agriculture creates $120 billion in economic activity and 12 percent of jobs are related to the industry. The average U.S. citizen will see price increases on all kinds of products until a deal is reached. “Some people can come out ahead if you’re protected, but it spills over in lots of other ways to lots of other firms and lots of other

people,” says C. Lockwood Reynolds, an economics professor at Kent State. If a trade deal isn’t resolved between leaders by early March, farmers will likely see even higher tariffs introduced. “They both [U.S. and China] want what they want, and they look out for their people and they’re not going to give to each other,” Klick says. Chinese buyers want U.S. soybeans, Klick notes, but won’t buy them until the tariffs are removed. Klick says he believes in the president and that’s why he voted for him, but says it’s unfortunate to be on the losing end of the deal. And Klick notes there is only a matter of time before the president shifts his focus back to re-election in 2020 and trade is not at the top of his priorities anymore.

“I know there’s a greater good behind what we call this ‘market strategy’ but if I had to sit down with some Chinese grain buyers right now, I would ensure that if things get back to what I would consider normal that we would be ready with open arms to work side by side with them and get some great quality soybeans back into their country,” he says. “A very wise man once told my grandfather one time ‘You don’t fight with another country over food, they don’t forget stuff like that.’” The Agriculture Department approved about $12 billion to assist farmers impacted by tariffs. By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL This year Sacramento presents another spring season full of ideas for HOAs – some bad, some good, and some well-intentioned but needing revision. Senate Bill 323 is a recycle of last year’s SB 1265, a bill vetoed by Governor Brown in September 2018. SB323 would add burdensome new elements to the HOA election process and dictate to HOAs who could or could not serve as directors. The bill is as bad an idea this year as it was last year. As Governor Brown wrote while vetoing its predecessor, SB323 “takes a once-sizefits-all(sic) approach, but not all homeowner associations are alike. If changes to an election process are needed, they should be resolved by the members of that specific community.” Associations should set their board eligibility standards, not Sacramento. SB652 addresses the conflict between architectural conformity and religious

observance. Does a Jewish Mezuzah or Christian cross violate rules banning alteration of doorways? SB652 would add a new Civil Code 4706, prohibiting associations from limiting or prohibiting display of religious items on entry doors of a member’s residence. There is no limitation on size, number, or appearance of doorway decorations, so long as they are religious. Perhaps some reasonable limit could be stated. Coauthored by sixteen legislators, it awaits committee assignment. SB434, authored by Senator Archuleta of Southeastern L.A. County, proposes to add a new Civil Code 5382. The proposed statute would require managing agents to produce the association’s records and property (manuals, transponders and keys, for example) within a certain

time after termination and/ or association request. Managers could not hold association records hostage, if, for example, they claimed the HOA owed them money. There is no penalty for noncompliance, and managers would not be required to produce email correspondence unless it had previously been given to the association. The bill is a good idea but should include correspondence as part of the HOA’s “records.” The bill has been assigned to the Judiciary and Housing Committees for hearing. SB754, authored by Senator Moorlach of Orange County, would make technical amendments to Civil Code 4230. Section 4230 currently allows association boards after 30 days’ notice to the membership to delete CC&R provisions which relate only to developer marketing or

completion of the project. SB754 would increase the required notice to 60 days and also allow deletion of provisions solely related to the developer’s planning of the project. The bill awaits committee assignment. SB222 proposes to add a new protected class, “veteran or military status,” to California’s anti-discrimination laws by amending several Government Code Sections. Authored by Senator Hill of the San Francisco area, it awaits hearing in the Judiciary Committee. Assembly Bill 446 would if adopted add a new protected class, “domestic violence victim status,” to California’s antidiscrimination statutes. However, the bill does not define “domestic violence victim status.” Civil Code 1946.7 allows domestic violence victims to break their leases, and perhaps

that statute might somehow lead to a definition, to avoid a vague and therefore less helpful statute. Authored by Assembly Member Choi of Irvine, it is pending hearing by the Housing and Community Development Committee. Fathers in Spotlight During National Social Work Month

By Desert Star Staff OMAHA, Neb. – As Nebraskans tip their hats to social workers during National Social Work Month, Nebraska Children’s Home Society is celebrating one year of Fatherhood P³, a father-to-father, community-based service. Program coordinator David Pollack says fathers carry anxiety about all the social factors they faced before they had children – concerns about financial stability is a common theme – in addition to new challenges as parents. Pollack says the 12 week course aims to give dads the tools they need to get involved, and stay involved, with their children. “When they have children or they have newborns, a lot of fathers, they’re like blindsided, like deer in the headlights, so to speak, and they really don’t know what to do,” Pollack states.

Groups of 10 or so dads would meet once a week for dinner, provided at no charge, and frank discussions on the challenges of fatherhood. The program focuses on three pillars of fatherhood: purpose, presence and participation. Pollack says after a strong first year, working with fathers already connected to the Society through other programs, the group will extend its outreach to the greater Omaha area. The program helps fathers manage their anxiety by helping them define their unique purpose, which Pollack says can instill a grounding focus, which also allows dads to be truly present with their children. He adds that participation, playing games or asking questions is vital for a child’s emotional and educational development. “Children feel a sense of connectivity when the

Communities Strive to Be More Livable, Age-Friendly By Desert Star Staff Large or small, urban or rural, any community can strive to be more livable â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and for the third year, AARP South Dakota is offering grants to help them achieve those goals. The grants are given for quick action projects through AARPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Challenge Grant initiative. They can be related to housing, transportation, smart cities and public space. Lindsey Holmquest, director of community outreach with AARP South Dakota, says the three projects funded in the state last year were all about building momentum. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The projects in Rapid City, Vermillion and Sioux Falls have improved accessibility of parks and bike trails, they built community pride and connectedness,â&#x20AC;? she points out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So, really, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all up to the community. They come up with ideas based on what would help their

community be more livable.â&#x20AC;? Holmquest says rural areas are especially encouraged to apply for quick action grants, because they often have a high number of older residents whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d benefit from accessibility improvements that would otherwise be cost prohibitive. Quick action means the project can be completed within the year. Communities can see the rules and apply online at aarp.org/livable. Making a place more livable often means making it more age friendly. Sioux Falls recently received that designation from AARP, becoming the first city in South Dakota to join a network of 300 other communities and three states. Holmquest says residents of an age-friendly community can live a full life, and whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good for an eight-year-old, is typically also good for an 80-year-old. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know that most

The entire company is charged with trying to fit too much public and private information into its two hours and fifteen minutes of the Libretto and the music score. Some judicious trimming is order to allow the audience to fully process and narrow the focus as a way of becoming fully

engaged in the very compelling and heart-felt Princess Diana story. It’s not easy to throw one’s baby out with the bathwater. We are also looking to discover where the illusive “soul” of this production really is. “Diana” the musical, performs at the La Jolla Playhouse’s Mandell Weiss Theatre and runs through April 14, 2019.
