The next “BIG SHORT”
By Janice Gough More and More we hear about the closing of stores, particularly in the retail sector. Anchor chains, like Macy’s and J.C. Penney, are closing stores causing many malls in our country to become default of their mortgage loans. After retailers had one of the worst Christmasshopping seasons in memory, there is good reason to be pessimistic. J.C. Penney said in February it plans to close up to 140 stores. Macy’s decision last year to close some 100 outlets and

Sears’s move to close about 150 locations. Delinquencies on retail loans have risen to 6.5 percent. It’s no secret many mall complexes have been struggling for years as Americans do more of their shopping online. Could Commercial loans on Malls be the next “Big Short”? The trade itself is similar to those that Michael Burry and Steve Eisman made against the housing market before the financial crisis of 2008. Their story was made famous by the book and movie “The Big Short.” Along with the academy award winners, it made them very wealthy. Often referred to as credit
protection, buyers of these contracts, otherwise referred to as shorting the market, bet against these commercial mortgage-backed securities. It wasn’t that long ago in, October, 2008, that the housing bubble occurred. As large retailers, close store, some malls may soon buckle under their debts, much the way many homeowners did nearly a decade ago. Mortgage bonds are similar to the securities issued during the subprime mortgage crisis. These securities have a higher concentration of loans to regional malls and shopping centers. Hedge investors are betting
against these commercialbacked mortgage bonds. If the loans taken out by beleaguered mall and shopping center operators go into default, firms are positioning to profit from a collapse. This could spur a wave of defaults. The death of retail will lead to big losses as defaults start occurring. Mall loan losses have been meaningfully higher than other mortgages. Many malls may continue to limp along, earning just enough from tenants to pay their loans. This bubble would not compare, by any degree, as the subprime home loan bubble, however Mall closures are beginning to happen. An example is the closing of the Hudson Valley Mall, in Kingston, New York. It used to house J.C. Penney
By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. Hello Mr. Richardson, Your articles are a wonderful resource for all involved with CIDs. I try to never miss an article. This past year we got a new manager and there has been a huge increase in violation letters. Some for items like patio chairs on walkways, water hoses not coiled in specific areas, and unit numbers that have been replaced decades ago with non-matching designs. None of these are spelled out anywhere in any governance document. The board has gone so far as to state that those with outstanding fines will not be able to vote in our upcoming election. What level of detail should the board publish and if they fail to publish it are there consequences? Thank you, A.S., Whittier
This is a very broad definition, and it needs to be so, because it is impossible to anticipate all the ways a neighbor may “interfere with the comfortable enjoyment” of neighbors. However, if the issue in the hearing is “nuisance,” the notice of hearing should indicate how the member was allegedly a nuisance. Another very common HOA deficiency is the failure to have a written schedule of fines. Under Civil 5850, associations must have a written “schedule of fines” and 5850(c) bars an association from imposing a fine which is more than the fines in the published fine schedule at the time the alleged violation occurred. The schedule of fines is also required to be published annually as part of
the Annual Policy Statement, per Civil 5310(a)(8). As to eligibility to vote, some associations have bylaws which bar owners from voting (or serving as directors) if they are delinquent in assessments or have unresolved violations. If an association does not have such a provision in its bylaws, the board may hold a hearing to suspend the voting rights of members. Corporations Code 7341 prescribes the procedure for suspending membership rights. It is important to note that this statute requires fifteen days’ notice prior to the suspension, unlike the normal HOA disciplinary hearing notice of ten days minimum. So, if the association wishes to be able to consider suspension as an option, it would need to give notice at
and Macy’s. But both left, and the businesses that depend on Anchor stores left also. In January, the mall was sold for less than 20 percent of the original $50 million loan. Mortgagebond holders exposed to the loan were partly wiped out. Cracks have started to appear. Some malls are dying, and we see very limited prospect of a turnaround in performance. This year could be a tipping point.
least 15 days ahead of the hearing, or wait until 15 days from the notice to commence the suspension (if the hearing was sooner than that). Also, if an association has not enforced a rule but plans on starting to enforce a rule, it is a good idea to give notification to the membership in advance. Thanks for your question, Kelly

HOA Homefront – Enforcing Unwritten Rules?
Dear A.S.: Operating rules are, per Civil 4350(a), written. The association cannot enforce unwritten rules. This is why Civil 5855(b) requires notice of a disciplinary hearing to specify the “nature of the alleged violation.” Before a board pursues disciplinary action, it should first check the rules or CC&Rs – what specific section was violated? If a specific section cannot be found covering the issue, then perhaps the board should reconsider the disciplinary hearing. Most associations have a prohibition in the CC&Rs or rules banning “nuisance.” “Nuisance” is defined by Civil Code 3479 as: “Anything which is injurious to health… or is indecent or offensive to the senses, or an obstruction to the free use of property, so as to interfere with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property.”

Healthy Babies, Toddlers Must be Higher Calif. Priority
A new report recommends ways that California policymakers could improve outcomes for the state’s children and toddlers. (ulkare/istockphoto)
By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Less than 10 percent of California toddlers and infants who are eligible for subsidized child care actually get it. That’s one statistic in a new report that spells out ways to improve the growth and development of the state’s youngest residents. The research is from the nonprofit group Children Now, where managing director and co-author Stacy Lee says the state’s complex web of programs is disjointed. She says that makes it difficult for families to enroll, and the report calls for a more comprehensive approach. “So, it’s taking more of an equity lens and prioritizing those who are most vulnerable first,
making the systems more streamlined and coordinated,” she explained. “And then, we obviously need to find some additional revenue, because this age group is pretty poorly invested in.” The researchers found that 62 percent of California’s two million babies and toddlers were born into low-income families. The state ranked 47th out of 50 in the most recent Kids Count report for economic well-being, affected by factors such as numbers of children in poverty, parents with unstable employment and high housing costs. Lee says the state cut a billion dollars from childcare and preschool programs during the Recession and still hasn’t fully restored
the cuts. She’s convinced that Governor Jerry Brown hasn’t made this issue enough of a priority. “We are at the bottom tier of a lot of measures when it comes to access and quality of services for children in the early years,” she said. “And that’s unfortunate because, with a state that has such a robust economy, with innovative leaders across many sectors, it’s a problem we can solve.” Lee says she hopes that agency heads across state government will follow the recommendations in the report to improve coordination and make the system easier to use, so it can reach more children in need.

Red Cross Reminder: Turn and Test Smoke Alarms for Daylight Saving Time
By Desert Star Staff WASHINGTON, -- Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 a.m. this Sunday. This is the best opportunity for the American Red Cross to remind everyone that it’s a good time to TEST the batteries in their smoke alarms as they TURN their clocks ahead an hour. This weekend is also a good time for everyone to take these additional steps that can help save lives and prepare households for emergencies. Practice fire drills at home. Fire experts agree that people may have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late. Every household should create a fire escape plan and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Escape plans should also include at least two ways to escape from every room, and a safe spot where family members can meet after leaving the home.
Check smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying from a home fire by half. Test smoke alarms once a month. Change the batteries at least once a year – if your model requires it. Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Launched in October 2014, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign is a national initiative to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires. With the support of thousands of local partners, the Red Cross has helped to save at least 197 lives and installed more than 702,000 smoke alarms in 9,100 communities nationwide. The campaign has made 294,000 households safer and helped create more than 248,000 home fire escape plans. In addition, through programs like The Pillowcase Project, the campaign has helped teach more than 707,000
young people about home fire preparedness and safety. Too Many High School Suspensions Cost California Billions

By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California could save billions of dollars by reducing the number of high school suspensions and favoring rehabilitation over punishment, according to a new study by the California Dropout Research Project. Researchers followed more than 100 randomly chosen 10th graders from across the state for three years, and found that suspension reduced the chances of graduation by almost 7 percent. What’s more, lead author Russell Rumberger, professor emeritus at UC Santa Barbara, calculates that each dropout costs society almost March 15, 2017
$570,000 over a lifetime. “They’re less likely to get a job, and if they do they have lower earnings over their entire lifetime,” he points out. “They’re also more likely to engage in criminal activities, which has a cost to taxpayers and to private citizens. They typically require more public health assistance, and finally they’re more likely to be on welfare.” The report suggests that districts work on the root cause of the bad behavior rather than simply meting out punishment. It praises districts such as the Los Angeles Unified School District that fund restorative justice programs and use positive behavioral
intervention and supports. Rumsberger says California is moving forward – recently including suspension rates in districts’ annual evaluations. “Schools and districts are now going to be formally accountable for their suspension rates, so we think it’s going to give incentives for places to reduce their suspension rates,” he states. The report endorses programs that work to address some of the factors that lead to bad behavior in school, including stresses at home, frustration over academic failure and a feeling of being disconnected from the school community.

US nuclear triad too old to fight Russians, Pentagon says By Desert Star Staff The US military urgently needs to modernize all three legs of the “nuclear triad” because its existing weapons are getting old and won’t be able to breach Russian air defenses in the very near future, senior Air Force and Navy officers told Congress. There are “scheduled realities” to the US nuclear weapon systems, US Air Force General Paul Selva, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday. Ohio-class submarines, Minuteman III ballistic missiles and B-52 strategic bombers are all rapidly approaching the end of their useful lifespan, according to Selva and three other senior officers testifying. “Our nuclear deterrent is nearing a crossroads,” Selva said. “We are now at a point where we must concurrently modernize the entire nuclear triad and the infrastructure that enables its effectiveness.”The B-52 fleet was built in the 1950s, and the bombs and missiles
they use were designed and built in the 1970s with a 10year lifespan, Selva said. “We know today they remain relevant, but we can’t continue to maintain them,” he told lawmakers. “A decade from now, those weapons will not be able to penetrate Russian air defenses, and therefore there is an urgency to their replacement.” There is “almost no slack” in the schedule for replacing the Ohio-class submarines with the new Columbia-class, and it will cost almost as much to extend the life of the Minuteman III missiles as it would to develop a replacement, he said.Selva’s assessments were seconded by Air Force’s Vice Chief of Staff General Stephen Wilson, Vice Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Bill Moran, and US Strategic Command (STRATCOM) head General John Hyten. While STRATCOM could go to round-the-clock operations tomorrow, in theory, the question in practice is how long the aged B-52s could withstand that tempo, Hyten told lawmakers. “When you’ve
By Desert Star Staff Attorneys for eight US states with Democratic majorities are pushing to prevent President Donald Trump’s new travel ban from taking effect. California’s attorney general has announced he will join the lawsuit, calling the measure unconstitutional. California will be joining Washington, Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon, New York, and Massachusetts in challenging the travel ban before a federal judge, Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Monday. Last month, our courts put a lid on the unconstitutional and un-American Trump Muslim travel ban because Americans stood up and demanded it,” Becerra said in a statement, quoted by the Los Angeles Times.
“The victory for lawful permanent residents and current visa holders was welcome news for everyone, especially the victims’ families. But the fight for fair and lawful treatment of all who would seek permission to enter our country is not over,” he added. Though the new ban includes numerous exemptions, including for lawful permanent residents and visa holders, Becerra said this was not good enough. “The Trump Administration may have changed the text of the now-discredited Muslim travel ban, but they didn’t change its unconstitutional intent and effect,” he said. “It is still an attack on people — women and children, professors and business colleagues, seniors and civic leaders — based on their religion and national origin.”
US Air Force Boeing B-52 Stratofortress strategic bomber © Tim Chong / Reuters got airplanes that old, the question is how long they’ll fly.” Wilson explained that the B-52 will be a 90-yearold design by the time it is scheduled for retirement in 2050. The B-2 bombers will be in their mid-60s by then as well. The Air Force’s B-21 Raider bomber is still on the drawing board at Northrop Grumman. The Navy’s Ohio-class
submarines “can’t go beyond 42 years” in service, said Moran, and were originally designed with a maximum lifespan of 30 years. The Columbia-class project is “on time and on schedule,” he added. Construction on the first new missile sub is supposed to start in 2021. The Obama administration put the price tag of modernizing
the US nuclear arsenal at $355 billion by 2023. Critics have said the actual figure could rise to over $1 trillion. President Donald Trump has called for the US to “greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability,” though he criticized the Obama administration’s costly modernization program during the election campaign.
Trump’s executive order temporarily restricting immigration from six Muslimmajority countries – Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – is scheduled to go into effect on Thursday. The administration is citing national security and the absence of proper security procedures as reasons for the suspension. Democrats are calling the measure a fulfillment of Trump’s campaign promise to ban all Muslims from entering the US, and therefore discriminatory. The Republican president’s first attempt at restricting immigration – which applied to Iraq and impacted green card holders – foundered in January after federal judge James Robart granted a request for injunction from Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson and several other Democratic AGs. A 9th Circuit
Court of Appeals panel upheld Robart’s stay. Rather than challenge the issue before the eight-member Supreme Court, the White House opted to issue a revised order. Ferguson and his colleagues filed to extend the original injunction to the new executive order, claiming it was identical in several respects, but Robart declined the request on Friday, saying he would need a proper procedural complaint against the new measure. The Justice Department has argued that the new order “falls outside the scope” of the
original injunction. Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the travel ban a lawful and proper exercise of presidential authority and vowed to enforce and defend it, adding that US attorneys who disagreed were welcome to leave. On Friday, Sessions asked for the resignations of 46 Obama administration holdovers. In addition to the pending challenge from seven states, Hawaii filed a separate lawsuit last week. That case is due for a hearing on Wednesday.

NC Lawmakers Attempt to Limit Protests, Free Speech
By Desert Star Staff RALEIGH, N. C. – As historic numbers of North Carolina citizens are engaging in the political process, some state lawmakers are looking for ways to criminalize protesting. House Bill 249, known as the “Economic Terrorism Bill,” would outlaw acts of protest such as disrupting traffic or business, or taking part in actions that might intimidate law enforcement. Similar legislation has been introduced in 16 other states. Mike Meno, communications director for the ACLU of North Carolina, says protecting First Amendment rights is not a partisan issue. “That’s something that should be concerning to all Americans, regardless of our politics,” said Meno. “These are not only protected by the Constitution, but they’re fundamental American values.” If the legislation passes,
people who are found in violation of the law would face Class A-1 misdemeanor charges – the category with the longest jail sentences. Supporters of HB 249 say it’s meant to protect the general public and property in the event of a protest, but Meno and others point out that there already are penalties for harassment or destruction of property. Orange County resident Tom High has been arrested three times for civil disobedience at Raleigh protests. He insists that, for him, casting a ballot isn’t enough – and says it’s worth the risk to assert his rights. “You have to be engaged, you have to educate yourself, and it’s not just about going out to vote,” High said. “You have to participate, in some form or fashion, beyond that.” The ACLU and others have taken the stance that bills such

“Law enforcement has the authority to carry out the law. It’s always dangerous when we give power to the government to limit rights.” The legislation also would allow local governments to sue people convicted of
riot, unlawful assembly or traffic-obstruction charges to recoup the cost of law enforcement. Gov. Roy Cooper has yet to issue a statement on whether he would sign or veto such a bill.

There are conflicting reports as to whether OutVets will accept the belated invitation, but Scanlon is sure he knows what Veterans For Peace would do. “If it were the other way around, and we were in solidarity with them, I can tell you, we would not walk, because we will not leave anyone behind,” he said. “Just like, we wouldn’t leave the LGBT community behind.” To Scanlon, the worst part is that it is fellow veterans who are excluding his veterans group.

Veterans for Peace Still Excluded from Boston St. Pat’s Parade
By Desert Star Staff BOSTON – It was frontpage news this weekend when a gay veterans group was given permission to march in the Boston St. Patrick’s Day
Parade – although another group of veterans still is prohibited from joining the walk. With just days to go until Boston is bathed in green, Pat Scanlon and his
national group Veterans For Peace still are on the outs, and won’t be allowed to join the parade again this year. “I’m a decorated Vietnam veteran, I was in military

Incredible.” In an emergency meeting on Friday, the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council decided to allow the gay veterans group OutVets to march next week. But Scanlon said they have made no change in their decision to block his group from participating. Scanlon explained it is all about the name, and said his group is accustomed to rejection. He pointed out that the same South Boston veterans have held the same stand against Veterans For Peace for seven years. “And the parade organizer said to me when I asked, ‘Why do they refuse to accept us in the parade?’ Quote:

‘Give a Dog a Job’ Campaign
By Desert Star Staff Chrysler brand is launching a new online social initiative in partnership with Canine Companions for Independence®, the largest non-profit organization for assistance dogs in the U.S. The initiative will help raise awareness and support for the training and placement of Canine Companions for Independence assistance dogs under the organization’s “Give a Dog a Job” campaign, a fundraising and awareness campaign that helps place them with adults, children and veterans with disabilities. Consumers will first meet Canine Companions puppy Foley, a Golden Retriever, Labrador cross (and the Chrysler brand’s first official PacifiPuppy!) on Monday, March 13, and follow him as he goes through his formal training with his recently
assigned puppy raiser. Fans can engage with Foley with the #RaisingFoley and #FoleyFriday hashtags on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “Through our partnership with Canine Companions for Independence, the Chrysler brand is able to help bring awareness to its ‘Give a Dog a Job’ program through our new online social initiative,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars, Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA North America. “As we follow Foley through his journey, fans will get a firsthand look at watching him grow and learn, from puppy training to becoming a fully trained assistance dog, and also gain an understanding of the huge amount of time and resources it takes to train these amazing dogs.” “Our partnership with Chrysler Pacifica, BraunAbility and our ‘Give a Dog a Job’
campaign brings our mission, the stories of our remarkable graduates and the adventures of Canine Companions puppy Foley to a whole new audience across the country,” says Paul Mundell, CEO of Canine Companions for Independence. “We are deeply grateful for the commitment made to us by these two leaders in adapted vehicles. The upfitted Chrysler Pacifica provides greatly enhanced independence for people with disabilities, especially those who utilize wheelchairs.” Fans will be able to follow Foley (named in honor of actor Scott Foley, an ardent supporter of Canine Companions for Independence) as he starts his path in life to being matched with a person with a disability, including: Getting acclimated to the puppy raiser’s home, including new sights and sounds Grooming, cradling, playing with feet, ignoring food on the ground Celebrating important days like #NationalPuppyDay (March 23), Veterans Day (November 11), and Canine Companions National Graduation Days (May 5, August 4 and November 3) Learning early commands, including “shake,” tracking his growth (against a growth chart in the all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivan) Adventures to the park and play dates with other Canine Companions puppies Visits to the vet and vaccinations First field trips and learning basic commands at puppy class “Because of highly trained
assistance dogs like my dog Mork, people like me are able to lead more full and independent lives,” said Wallis Brozman, Corporate Marketing Assistant, Canine Companions. “Mork was trained by Canine Companions’ professional instructors in 40 spoken commands and has since learned American Sign Language and approximately 15 new commands. This campaign is educating the public on the unique contributions our service dogs make in the lives of adults, children and veterans with disabilities. The program will also raise funds to allow us to place more exceptional dogs like Mork with people like myself. Without Mork’s help, I didn’t feel like I could safely leave my home. Mork is my independence on four legs.” Under the “Give a Dog a Job” campaign, trained service dogs across the country are empowering wheelchair users daily by completing everyday activities, including getting in and out of their wheelchairaccessible vehicles. Hundreds are currently on the waitlist to receive a trained assistance dog, which is provided to a person with a disability free of charge. It takes two years to fully train a Canine Companions assistance dog, including six to nine months of professional training. To raise, train, place and support a certified assistance dog amounts to a $50,000 investment. Followers can donate at www. driveindependence.org. Chrysler brand and BraunAbility recently joined forces to design a wheelchairaccessible Chrysler Pacifica minivan providing the largest interior space as well as the widest door opening and sideentry ramp in the industry.
Watchdog Group Calls for Clarity from White House By Desert Star Staff INDIANAPOLIS – There’s a call for the White House to release its policy on how it will keep from interfering in law enforcement matters. Less than two months into the new administration, Ian Bassin, executive director of the legal watchdog group United to Protect Democracy, says there have been three reported instances of the White House appearing to do just that. The group is made up of former Obama administration lawyers who helped craft rules of conduct, and Bassin says since Watergate both parties have abided by guidelines when it comes to contacts with federal enforcement agencies such as the Department of Justice and the FBI. Bassin stresses the Trump administration needs to make public its plans to avoid even the appearance of inappropriate political interference. “These rules are incredibly important to protecting the health of our democracy,” he www.desertstarweekly.com
A watchdog group wants the current administration to avoid political interference in law enforcement issues. (whitehouse.gov) stresses. “They are hallmarks of the difference between healthy democracies around the world and more authoritarian forms of government.” United to Protect Democracy has issued a memo on the importance of policies governing the White House’s contacts, saying the American people need to know that the Trump administration will abide by these rules. It’s also reminding Americans of why the rules were established in the first place.
Bassin says there’s no law preventing someone from the White House from speaking to the FBI, for example, about a current investigation that’s under way. But he adds that’s something normally left up to the White House Counsel’s Office. He says there have been extensive studies about democratic decline around the world. “It’s not always unlawful activity by an executive that really undermines the March 15, 2017
democracy,” he points out. “It’s the slow unraveling of oftentimes legal activities, and it’s incredibly important that we pay attention.” Bassin says the U.S. should be setting an example of what a healthy democracy should look like, and says it’s hard for this country to do that if it isn’t abiding by its own guidelines. He says not doing that lowers the standards and hurts the democratic movement around the world.

They are important and will stabilize your actions and self-identity in the coming challenging times. View and interact in groups with discrimination. Sometimes you’re far away from home tending to life and death situations or medical emergencies. CANCER You may be remembering the many friends and groups you affiliated with, perhaps at work. There was a recognition, a call to leadership, an ability to teach and to help others in need. Do you have a future wish and hope to be fulfilled? Are you considering travel, people far away? Is there a community interaction you will participate in? Over the years you’ve developed discrimination, ethics and ideals. How is your garden. Share what you grow.

Members of Congress Not Expected at Town Hall This Week By Desert Star Staff CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Organizers still hope to see West Virginia’s U.S. senators and congressional representatives at a town hall in South Charleston Thursday night, although none has said he or she will attend. Cathy Kunkel, an organizer with Rise Up
West Virginia, says voters are frustrated and are not getting answers about health care legislation, immigration, ethical conflicts and Trump campaign contacts with Russian officials. She says the state’s elected leaders haven’t been holding open public meetings in West Virginia. “We were really
disappointed that despite all the calls into our senators and congress folks that they have not held or scheduled any in-person public townhall meetings, and so we decided to schedule one for them,” she states. Kunkel says Rise Up West Virginia invited Sens. Joe Manchin and Shelley
Moore Capito, and Rep. Alex Mooney. None has said he or she will attend or send staff. Kunkel says if not, her group will collect comments and questions to pass on. Manchin has said he will attend a health care town hall next month. Angry crowds criticized members of Congress in other states during the last recess. Some lawmakers charged paid political opponents derailed the events. But there is little or no evidence of paid protesters. Kunkel says all five West Virginia members of Congress did go to a public reception in Washington. But she says they haven’t been holding open meetings back home. Kunkel says voters should press them to do what she calls a basic
part of holding public office. “This is not rocket science here,” she states. “This is the bare minimum responsibility of their job. Continue to call these senators and congress peoples’ office, and ask them to hold town hall meetings, and I would also encourage folks in the Charleston area to come out to the town hall.” The town hall is Thursday evening at the LaBelle Little Theater in South Charleston. Mooney is not originally from West Virginia and often has been criticized for not spending time in his district. He has held a number of what his office calls telephone town halls, where he takes screened questions.

Guests would cheer when they heard about a favorite song that they had written. One of my favorites was a Grammy winning song written by Tim Nichols, Live Like You Were Dying, and sung by Tim McGraw. All of these songwriters have had hits
that top the charts, including many number-one hits. The songs they have written are sung by top names in the country that include, Carrie Underwood, Sheryl Crow, Montgomery Gentry, Tim McGraw, Kenney Chesney, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley and so many more. Some of these songwriting artists have made their own CDs. Patrick Warburton spoke
to the crowd and said this is special because you will hear the leading songwriters in the industry in one place. When guests entered the tent, they saw drawings by the children of St. Jude that started with A and ended with Z. These posters spoke about their battle with cancer and how St. Jude has helped them in so many ways.Very emotional posters that come from the heart.

Edward Albee’s “At Home at the Zoo”
rants, has been listening intently as Peter spouts such phrases as “Kindness and cruelty” or “What is gained is lost.” After rambling on and on, Jerry asks his new friend if he would like to know why he planned on going to the zoo. “I went to the zoo to see how people and animals co-exist.” He wanted to see children and balloon sellers. But, our esteemed playwright had no intention of making this a “Sunday in the Park With George,” but more a Sunday in the park with an unhinged man meeting a seemingly “hinged,” gentle man who is content with the life he is living. But no. that is not what happens. It’s about here that Albee takes a dramatic fork in the road and quite unexpectedly Jerry turns very dark and begins to argue with Peter. Jerry makes fun of Peter’s dreary life and before long, hits him on the arm demanding that he move away from him on the bench. Taken aback, Peter keeps moving until he reaches the edge of the bench saying, “I can’t move any further.” It’s under these circumstances, when Peter is being bullied into giving up his favorite bench, that the base, smothered violent tendencies lurking beneath the surface, rears its ugly head. He yells back saying he’s not going to give up his bench at which point Jerry produces a knife and a violent struggle ensues. So, in a flash, Peter goes from a mild-mannered, rich publishing executive, to a man in a life and death fight, which he could have avoided by, yes, simply giving up the bench and going home to his comfy life. Albee makes a point that under the right circumstances, a controlled, normal exterior could mask a violent streak waiting to be unleashed especially when it involves a territorial imperative. What struck me in particular, is Albee’s use of the dog, who survived being poisoned, as a metaphor for how we engage with each other in life. We love. We hate. We destroy. We repent. We are redeemed. There’s a lot to ponder but heck, that’s what makes for a great evening of theatre and, despite the weakness of “Homelife,” “The Zoo Story” is just the play to stimulate your imagination and perhaps question what’s around you.
Theatre’s production of “Spring Awakening,” which garnered beautiful reviews that resulted in a Broadway production. Act Two is “The Zoo Story” and the acting, to a lesser extent, almost matches the energy and excitement of “Spring Awakening.” I suspect part of that is because all four actors are on stage at the same time so that we can see the part being played simultaneously by both the signing and hearing actors. The action takes place on a park bench in New York’s Central Park recreated through a splendid fall setting by Karyl Newman, which makes up for the most uninteresting set in Act 1, which in no way suggests the upper middle class lifestyle of Ann and Peter. Following the confrontational nature of the conversation with Ann in Act One, Peter goes off to the park to sit on his favorite (L-R) Peter (Troy Kotsur ) listens as Jerry (Russell Harvard) talks about his pathetic life. bench. San Diego and Los Angeles both had buses like this but there was none in the Coachella Valley. She thinks of the snipbus as a community bus, but it needs to be supported by the community and local businesses to keep it running so they can continue to cover
all the areas of the desert where animals need help. The Scherers also established Luke’s Legacy Foundation and Melanie, as president of the Board of Directors, has committed her fundraising expertise to raising funds and donating to many nonprofit rescue centers, which also includes the Snipbus. The ultimate goal is to guarantee that these centers have the necessary financial resources to ensure that the abandoned or unwanted animals receive adequate medical care, including neutering or spaying, and, foremost, find a forever home in a loving family environment. There are many good reasons for spaying and neutering. The first is when female cats and dogs are in heat, this causes males to travel long distances to follow the scent, in many cases unsafely. And don’t forget the hungry coyotes that can smell it a mile away. Neutering male animals is also important not only to keep
the population down, but to calm aggressive behavior. Scherer added, “We live in a year round warm climate and because of this our dogs often bear young twice a year while cats can give birth three times. We have many cats that are brought to us for spaying that are still lactating and discover that they are already pregnant with the next litter. Unfortunately, they can’t just walk into our bus and ask for help if they have had nine unwanted litters in five years, so we have to accept the responsibility to help them. “We can all make a difference in saving lives and controlling countless unnecessary deaths of innocent cats and dogs. We are all responsible to spread the word and educate the public on controlling the population, so please make an appointment at a clinic right away.” www.Snipbus.org or www.LukesLegacyFoundation .org for more information on how you can help.

Delightful Eugene O’neill Comedy at a Noise Within Theatre By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Eugene O’Neill, America’s only Nobel Laureate in Literature (1936) is a giant of the American theatre. He’s arguably one of the four greatest American dramatists of the 20th century, along with Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albee. O’ Neill, is best known as a highly-regarded dramatist who explored the dark and rougher side of the American experience, as a way of expiating the “sins” of his troubled family history. O’Neill, a prolific writer and dramatist, only wrote one comedy play - “Ah, Wilderness” - over his storied career. “Ah, Wilderness”, O’Neill’s paean to the youth he never experienced, is a sweet, nostalgic, coming of age comedy that had the good fortune to land in the capable and caring hands of director Steven Robman, and a cast of exceptional performers. It’s a fitting production to stage for the highly acclaimed A Noise Within theatre company, now celebrating their 25th anniversary season. The theatre, co-founded by Geoff Elliott and Julia Rodriguez-Elliott have earned their reputation over the last twenty-four years, as a classical repertory company, dedicated to staging the great works of theatre. The story centers round the middle-class Miller’s, their extended family members and their children, that takes
place in a small town on the Connecticut shore at the turnof-the 20th century. Most of the action in the play occurs in the house of Nat and Essie Miller, winningly played by Nicholas Hormann and Deborah Strang, respectively) Nat owns the local newspaper, and his oldest son Richard (Matt Gall in a terrific performance), a budding 17 year-old poet and writer (the alter-ego of O’Neill) is in love with Muriel McComber, (a lovely Emily Goss), the daughter of Nat’s largest advertiser. Muriel’s ultra conservative father David (nicely and stuffily played by (Marcelo Turbet), is outraged when he learns that Richard has been discussing the ‘scandalous’ books of George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, and the 12th century poet Omar Khayyam with Muriel. As a result, the young people are forbidden to see each other. Yes, yes, it was definitely a different society one hundred years ago. When Richard mistakenly thinks, Muriel has agreed to end their relationship, he goes to a local tavern and gets drunk for the first time, causing an uproar when he gets home. The next day he learns that Muriel still cares for him and they meet in secret that night at a deserted local beach, where they finally profess their youthful devotion to each other. Life in America back at the turn of the 20th century was, to co-opt the words of our forty-first President George
Ensemble of Ah, Wilderness!. Photo by Craig Schwartz. Herbert Walker Bush, a ‘kinder and gentler America’. Large and connected families like the Miller’s in the play include three sons: Richard, Arthur (Ian Littleworth) and Samuel Genghis Christian, and one daughter Mildred (Katie Hume), an Uncle Sid, Essie’s brother (wonderfully portrayed by Allen Blumenfeld), and Nat’s sister Lilly Miller (Kitty Swink), the love interest of Uncle Sid for sixteen years; with no marriage plans in sight due to Sid’s drinking problems. The idea of a loving, caring, family unit was the bedrock of American society, and one that O’Neill missed desperately. The audience on opening night, was probably 60 % over 50 and 40% under, with both age groups lapping up the performances and ‘getting’ the play’s nuances
through the lenses of people who lived over a hundred years ago. Young people, today are the audiences of the future and this audience appeared to appreciate what came before them. Both age groups aren’t quite ready to toss the ‘nostalgia baby’ out with the bathwater, if the responses to “Ah, Wilderness”, I heard on opening night are any indication. Great stories and great theatre will always have a place in the memories of theatre-goers, and the need to revisit them from time to time is crucial. In the technical department, director Robman leads the creative team of Scenic Designer Frederica Nascimento, Lighting Designer Tom Ontiveros, whose lighting allows the audience to see and appreciate the costumes
of Designer Garry D. Lennon, and that wonderful turn-of-the century look. The redoubtable Cricket S. Myers provides the sound, and Danielle Richter designs the Hair, Wigs and Makeup. “Ah, Wilderness”, also is blessed with cast that sings three and four-part harmony under the musical direction of Jonathan Tessero. Radio was a couple of decades in the future, so and the source of family entertainment then was a piano, and family members who gathered around it and sang and played musical instruments. Almost an unthinkable way to entertain families today. “Ah, Wilderness” is a splendid and charming evening of theatre that performs at A Noise Within theatre in Pasadena, and runs through May 20, 2017. Don’t’ miss it!

Saudi prince goes to Washington for Trump meet By Desert Star Staff Saudi Arabia’s royal court said the kingdom’s second in line to the throne will meet President Donald Trump at the White House this week. It will be the pair’s first meeting since Trump took office in January. Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman – the kingdom’s defense minister and responsible for its reforms – will meet with Trump and several US officials to discuss “the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries and regional issues of mutual interest,” a royal court statement read, announcing the prince’s departure for the US on Monday, according to AP. There were no details given on when he would meet Trump. Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter and the biggest buyer of American-made arms, is also part of the US-led coalition’s bombing campaign against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Syria. Key issues on the agenda with Trump are likely to include discussions on global energy prices, as well as the conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition with Washington backing has been bombing Iran-backed Shiite rebels for nearly two years. The Russian Foreign Ministry spoke out on Monday about a Saudi-led
coalition plan to launch an assault on Yemen’s biggest port-city, Al Hudaydah, warning such an operation could significantly worsen the humanitarian situation in the war-torn country. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement published on the ministry’s website that battles in that area “would not only inevitably lead to a mass exodus of the [local] population but would also de facto cut the capital of Sanaa from…food and humanitarian aid supplies.” Saudi relations with Washington cooled under President Obama after his administration secured a nuclear deal with regional rival Iran. The deal has been heavily criticized by Trump. During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly accused Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton of being the recipient of Saudi money. “Crooked Hillary says we must call on Saudi Arabia and other countries to stop funding hate,” Trump wrote on June 13, 2016. “I am calling on her to immediately return the $25 million plus she got from them for the Clinton Foundation!” Analysis by PolitiFact however found Saudi Arabia contributed several times to the Clinton Foundation, and in 2014 is alleged to have
Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman given under $10 million. Whether that generosity will have any effect on the direction of talks at the White House this week remains to be seen. The kingdom has expressed optimism about rebuilding its alliance with Washington and working with the Trump administration to contain Iran’s reach in the region. In a call between Trump and King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud in January, the two agreed to back safe zones in Syria and Yemen, according to a White House statement. Prince bin Salman oversees the kingdom’s efforts
to revive state finances by diversifying away from reduced crude oil revenues. Under the plan, which seeks to promote the private sector and make state-owned companies more efficient, Riyadh aims to sell up to 5 percent of state oil giant Aramco in what is expected to be the world’s biggest initial public offering. The country, an absolute monarchy and follower of Wahhabism, underwent an austerity drive last year to reduce state spending after a surging budget deficit due to slumping oil prices. “By freeing the kingdom from the statist model of
its past, bin Salman hopes ultimately to create new private sector jobs for younger people in a country where half the population of 21 million Saudis – there are also 10 million expatriates – are estimated to be under 25,”according to Reuters. “Younger Saudis face entrenched unemployment, a skills shortage, a lack of housing and growing pressure on living standards as the kingdom’s oil income grows ever less able to finance the needs of a rising population,” the news agency stated.
Sanders blasts GOP healthcare act’s ‘disgraceful’ tax breaks for the wealthy
Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders By Desert Star Staff The Republican plan to overhaul the US healthcare system is “far worse” than Obamacare, according to Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, and represents a disgraceful effort to “give massive tax breaks” to the wealthy. Last week, the Republican Party released new healthcare legislation aimed at dismantling the “skyrocketing costs” of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), signed into law by Barack Obama in 2010. The House Republican’s American Healthcare Act (AHCA) strips away mandates on individuals and employers, www.desertstarweekly.com
while certain subsidies and taxes will be binned. Speaking on CBS Face the Nation on Sunday, former presidential candidate Sanders hit out at changes that he said will give a “$275 billion tax break to the top 2 percent” of earners. “It is an absolute disaster, it is a disgrace and this really has nothing to do with healthcare. What this has everything to do with is a massive shift of wealth from working middle income people to the very richest people in this country,” Sanders said. The act has already provoked the ire of the American Medical Association, which says it “cannot support”
the move in its current guise. Under the amendments, a much-maligned Obamacare individual mandate which saw people taxed for not having health insurance will
be stricken from the system. Meanwhile, Medicaid, a social welfare program providing low income earners with greater access to medical services, would be frozen in 2020. The AHCA also repeals the high-income Medicare tax, which required people earning more than $200,000 to pay a 0.9 percent tax on their wages. A second 3.8 percent tax on “unearned income” like investment revenue will also be abolished. “They’re going to decimate Medicaid, which is why the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association oppose it. This is a disgrace,” Sanders said. Asked by CBS host John Dickerson how the ACA could continue in its “rickety” financial state, Sanders admitted the legislation is not perfect but said
that, under Republican plans, up to 10 million people may soon be without health insurance. Sanders added: “It is very hard for [Paul Ryan] or anybody not to deny that what Republicans are bringing forth is far, far worse than Obamacare and that its primary purpose is massive tax breaks to the very wealthiest people in this country.” n what could be considered a message to reluctant conservatives still on the fence about backing the act, Ryan said he agreed with President Donald Trump that next year could be an electoral “bloodbath” for Republicans if the new legislation fails. Appearing on the same Sunday show, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said Obamacare was collapsing and that he expected the new legislation to pass in the Senate.

MUSIC Songwriting on display via four masterworks BY ROBERT KINSLER
Potent songwriting is at the heart of four noteworthy new collections released in early March. Artists: R. Stevie Moore and Jason Falkner Title: Make It Be (Lost Colony Music & Bar/None Records) You might like if you enjoy: XTC, Beck, Jellyfish Tell me more: It is hard to think of a recent collaboration as interesting, eclectic and ambitious as the new “Make It Be” from indie hero R. Stevie Moore and singer-songwriter/ guitarist Jason Falkner. The perfect mix of brilliant original songwriting, experimental spoken word pieces and several beautiful instrumental guitar interludes captivate across the fast-paced 18-track collection that is as accessible as it is groundbreaking. Those who love traditional power pop-styled songs featuring shimmering harmonies will find themselves immersed in the sonics of “Another Day Slips Away,” “I Love Us, We Love Me” and “Sincero Amore,” as
well as the lush “Horror Show.” Driving garage rock is given its glory on the art damage rocker “Stamps” while the psychedelic folk song “Play Myself Some Music” and experimental piano-meets-electronica foray “Passed Away Today” are late album highlights. There is also a just-for-fun take on Huey Smith & the Clowns’ rollicking 1958 single “Don’t You Just Know It.” Across the disc, the wide-ranging talents of Moore and Falkner as vocalists and musicians dazzle bright. Information: bar-none.com. Artist: The Shins Title: Heartworms (Columbia) You might like if you enjoy: The Shins, Broken Bells Tell me more: The Shins are back with their fifth studio album (and first since 2012’s outstanding “Port of Morrow”). The newly-released “Heartworms” finds singersongwriter James Mercer and company building on an established sound that is a hybrid of indie rock and dream and synth pop. Romantic
dreams are celebrated via the electronica Erasure-flavored “Cherry Hearts,” while the Shins somehow fuse authentic Americana into their sonic brew via the magical “Mildenhall.” The magnificent “Rubber Ballaz” and propulsive “Half A Million” are bolstered by dance floor-worthy rhythms without sacrificing lyrical and melodic elegance. “So Now What” finds Mercer’s high-reaching tenor perfectly positioned against a symphonic expanse where he sings of painful new beginnings as a long-term relationship ends. Information: theshins.com. Artist: Cindy Lee Berryhill Title: The Adventurist (Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: Kerry Getz, Emmylou Harris, Cindy Lee Berryhill Tell me more: Cindy Lee Berryhill’s welcome return “The Adventurist” is an amazing listen to be sure. The songs here resonate powerfully, part of a song cycle for Berryhill’s late husband Paul Williams whose traumatic brain injury
ultimately led to a number of medical challenges including dementia; he died in March 2013. Berryhill began writing the first of the songs that appear on “The Adventurist” in 2011, and her ability to share the most intimate of emotions is at the heart of “The Adventurist.” The joys and challenges of deep love and loss are articulated with beauty, a touch of humor and uncommon depth at every turn by Berryhill, whose songs are lavishly enhanced by a talented group of players who add cello, vibraphone, violin, glockenspiel and many more voices across the 14-track journey. The soundscape used by Berryhill to paint her musical portrait runs from indie rock (“American Cinematography”) and baroque pop (“Somebody’s Angel,” “Thanks Again”) to dream pop (“Gravity Falls”) and indie low-fi rock (“Deep Sea Fishing”). Information: omnivorerecordings.com. Artist: Guy Clark Title: The Best of the Dualtone Years
(Dualtone Records) You might like if you enjoy: Guy Clark, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard Tell me more: Acclaimed singer-songwriter Guy Clark, who died on May 17, 2016, is celebrated on the essential “The Best of the Dualtone Years.” The twodisc is comprised of stellar material from his final three studio albums, his 2011 live set “Songs and Stories,” along with three previouslyunreleased songs offered up as intimate demo recordings. The complete 19-track collection is gold, filled with Clark’s insightful and descriptive lyrics sang with a lived-in-the-world baritone. Against a rich musical backdrop as rich and vast as his native Texas, the range of Americana-styled nuggets includes the sumptuous “Rain In Durango,” magical musical tale “The Guitar,” the ultimate tale of escape (“L.A. Freeway”), and the romancethemed acoustic ballad “My Favorite Picture of You.” Information: dualtone.com.
CA Advocates for Working Families Push to Keep State-Based Savings Accounts By Desert Star Staff SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Advocates for working families are fighting to keep a proposed state-sponsored retirement savings program called Secure Choice, even as some in Congress are trying to undermine this type of plan. The U.S. Senate is expected to vote soon on a bill to reverse Labor Department rules that establish a state’s right to run “work and save” programs. Designed for people who don’t have workplace retirement plans, the state deducts money from workers’ paychecks and selects a firm to invest it. Marisabel Torres, a senior policy analyst for the National Council of La Raza in California, said she’s disappointed that the U.S. House already voted to gut

She said they could help California’s working poor salt some money away for their golden years. “Regardless of where they work, they’ll be able to save long-term for retirement,” she said, “and that policy could really go a long way in helping to stave off the retirement crisis.” An estimated 7 million Californians and 55 million Americans work for companies that don’t offer retirement plans. Opponents of the state-run plans have said government should stay out of the financial sector and have noted that people are free to open their own 401(K) plan with a private investment firm. This St. Patrick’s Day, Plan Before You Party
By KMIR News Staff Coachella Valley Region St. Patrick’s Day has become one of the nation’s favorite holidays to celebrate and party. Unfortunately, too many people are taking to the roads after drinking, making the holiday one of our most dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 252 people lost their lives in drunk driving-related crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period from 2011-2015. More than a fourth of them were killed in drunk driving crashes that occurred in the early morning, post-party hours (midnight to 5:59 a.m.).
That’s why the Palm Desert Police Department and the California Office of Traffic Safety are teaming up to reach all drivers with an important life-saving message and warning: Don’t Drive Impaired by Drugs or Alcohol. The Palm Desert Police Department will deploy additional officers on special DUI Saturation Patrols at times specifically selected to stop and arrest drivers showing signs of alcohol or drug impairment. In addition to this St Patrick’s Day enforcement effort, all police, sheriff and the CHP will be on heightened alert ready to stop and arrest any impaired driver throughout the long weekend.
“These needless deaths can be prevented,” said Sergeant Koser, Palm Desert Police Department. “Planning a sober ride home before the party begins is the first step in staying safe on St. Patrick’s Day. Don’t wait until you’ve already been drinking to make your transportation decision. Designate your sober driver in advance, and never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.” If you plan to celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day, follow these tips to stay safe: • Before celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year, decide whether you’ll drink or you’ll drive. You
can’t do both. “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving” • If you’re planning on driving, commit to staying sober. If you’ve been out drinking and then get behind the wheel, you run the risk of causing a crash or getting arrested for a DUI. • Drugs such as many prescription medications, marijuana or illicit drugs can also lead to impairment and unsafe driving, leading to a DUI. When mixed with even a small amount of alcohol the affects can be compounded. • If you have been drinking, call a taxi or sober friend or family member, use public transportation or you can download the Designated Driver VIP free mobile app, “DDVIP,” for Android or iPhone. The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober
driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more. The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-Designated Driver to call Uber, Lyft or Curb. • Help those around you be responsible, too. Walking while impaired can also be deadly, as lack of attention could put you at risk of getting hit by a vehicle. If someone you know is impaired by alcohol or drugs, do not let them get behind the wheel and help them find a sober ride home. This enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who reminds everyone to be alert and ‘Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911’ if you see a dangerous driver call immediately! Powerful award winning drama on stage At CV Rep
Elizabeth Saydah, Maya Lynne Robinson, Arash Mokhtar, Joel Polis. Photo by Jim Cox By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Playwrights can get away with a lot when it comes to biting social discourse when those verbal exchanges are in the form or comedy or satire. Remember ‘God of Carnage’? Yazmina Reza’s blisteringly funny tale of four seemingly-intelligent adults who meet to sort out a schoolyard incident involving their young sons, only to have the meeting explode into hand-to-hand verbal combat when a casual remark sets off a firestorm of recriminations. Playwright Ayad Akhtar takes a more dramatic approach in his searing drama “Disgraced”, now on stage at CV REP, in Rancho Mirage. Akhtar explores the dark underbelly of the politically correct subject matter of antiSemitism and Islamaphobia that is always simmering just beneath the surface of social discourse. The problem is that the situation inevitably boils over later on, and in this case, dragging his five characters into open verbal warfare that will alter the lives of all involved. “Disgraced”, staged and insightfully directed by Joanne Gordon, at CV REP, first premiered in 2011 in Chicago, then transferred to New York’s Lincoln Center, then on to Broadway capturing a Pulitzer Prize for Akhtar. The play was the most produced play in America in 2015. The drama written in 2011 is eerily prescient for events now unfolding in America in 2017. The action set in New York‘s Upper West Side in 2011 and 2012 takes place over a nine month period. The story centers round successful Pakistani-American lawyer Amir (Arash Mokhtar) and his painter wife Emily (Elizabeth Saydah). Emily has been creating a series of painting with Islamic themes. At the urging of www.desertstarweekly.com
Emily and Abe (Kamran Abbassian) Amir’s nephew, Amir reluctantly agrees to offer “some assistance” to a local Imam who has run afoul of the law for comments the Imam made about the “9/11” attacks. During a hosted dinner party for their friends Issac (Joel Polis), a curator friend of Emily’s who is producing a showing of her works at a fashionable art gallery in the upper East Side, and Joel’s wife Jory (Maya Lynne Robinson), a lawyer at Amir’s firm. All settle in for an evening of cocktails, gossip, and a delicious dinner prepared by Emily. After consuming too much alcohol the conversation turns to office business talk and then to the hot button issues of the day: politics, religion, and whatever other alcohol-fueled, deep-seated feelings held by all, begin to rise to the surface. Amir, a self-proclaimed apostate from Islam makes a case for secularism saying “The Koran is like one long hate-mail letter to humanity.” Which prompts Issac to calm the waters with a sincere assessment saying “Islam is rich and universal (as viewed through his curator’s lens) part of a spiritual heritage we can all draw from.” Amir reacts and admits to all …” to having felt some slight feeling of pride on September 11th.” The dialogue produced gasps from the audience. Now the stage is set for the incendiary narrative of infidelity accusations along with vindictive, hurtful charges by all. “Disgraced” may be full of clichés, but no one can deny the talent and solid performances of the actors working on the stage. Sometimes the situations get overcooked with everyone yelling. But, after all there are a lot of deep-seated feelings being hurled all about with each character making a case for his or her position. There is another character,
however, that demands our attention as well. Abe Jensen, the nephew of Amir, played by Kamran Abbassian. Abe is an alienated angry and bitter Muslim young man who tried to assimilate into American society, even changing his name to a more Anglo version of his birth name; but
without success. He gets to summarize (at least for me) the driving ideology and role that Islam hopes to play in the overall scheme of things on this planet. Abe’s speech near the end of the play offers a vexing harbinger, perhaps, of things to come, or things for thoughtful introspection as our secular society comes to grips with our diverse population. The beauty of this powerful and insightful play lies in the potent performances of its talented ensemble cast: Arash Mokhtar, Elizabeth Saydah, Joel Polis, Maya Lynne Robinson, and Kamran Abbassian. Each actor has their moment to shine, and there are many such moments As a side bar note: due to the relevance and sensitivity of the play’s subject matter, Artistic Director Ron Celona has arranged for a Q & A discussion with the director and the cast following each performance. The opening night performance Q & A produced such audience comments as “We should all just follow the ‘Golden Rule’ in order to get along”, to “There is no simple explanation or one rule. Life’s just too complicated”, to
“This play made me think”, and lastly, “Prejudice is in our DNA.” And who says Art doesn’t reflect life? Resident Set Design wizard Jimmy Cuomo, never ceases to amaze on how he and his team continually solve all of the story’s set design challenges in such an intimate performing space. His Upper West Side apartment sparkles, and the front door design is proof that on stage doors can indeed, slam shut without making the walls shake. Lighting Designer Moira Wilkie Whitaker’s clever design enhances the overall moods that the actors create on stage. Aalsa Lee’s costumes are spot-on and eye-catching and sexy when the ladies are on stage. Award-winning Cricket S. Myers, a Tony nominated Sound Designer, supplies the sound, and Karen Goodwin, manages the sound tech. Making sure the back stage crew and scene changes are on point is Production Manager and Assistant Designer, Doug Morris. “Disgraced”, now on stage at CV REP Theatre in Rancho Mirage, is an emotionallycharge theatre experience that is not be missed!
