By Desert Star Staff A group of Girl Scouts were the victims of an attempted armed robbery in Tacoma, Washington. The girls were selling cookies outside a store when two men pulled a gun on them. The Girl Scouts were outside a Fred Meyer store when the incident occurred at about 6.20 pm on Saturday, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said, the News Tribune reports. Two men in their 20s pulled a gun on the girls in an attempt to rob them. The pair left without taking any money, or cookies. “We are saddened and disheartened to share that there was an attempted robbery at a Girl Scout booth site in Tacoma

this evening,” the Girl Scouts of Western Washington said in a statement on their Facebook page. “We are grateful that no one was harmed, although of course they are shaken.” This isn’t the first time Girl Scouts have been the target of armed robbers. Last February, a Girl Scout and her mother were held at gunpoint outside a supermarket in Union City, California. The gunman first posed as a customer, then came back holding a pistol and stole all the cookie money, the East Bay Times reports. Girl Scout cookies cost about $5 per box, and the average scout sells about 150-200 boxes of cookies per season.

Immigrant-Rights Groups Speak Out as Trump Visits CA By Desert Star Staff LOS ANGELES – Even as President Donald Trump wraps up his first visit to the Golden State since the election, immigrant-rights groups are embracing California’s new nickname as the “State of Resistance.” Last September, the president ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows work permits for people brought to the United States as children. However, a federal judge kept it going while litigation proceeds. Frank Sharry, founder and executive director of the nonprofit America’s Voice, described himself as very pessimistic that this Congress will cut a deal to help the Dreamers. “The Trump administration has declared war on refugees and immigrants; they are determined to kick out people who are here, either with no status or with an uncertain status,” Sharry insisted. “So, this is a historic challenge to those of us who believe that America should be a welcoming nation.” Trump has defended his

policies, saying the increases in immigration raids and deportations will protect jobs for U.S. citizens. He visited prototypes for a border wall and maintained that national security depends on its construction. Attorney Joshua Rosenthal with the National Immigration Law Center said he supports comprehensive immigration reform, but noted there is no provision to help people who hadn’t yet applied for DACA. “It does leave out people who were not able to obtain DACA before the Trump administration ended the DACA program, because they were too young, or they hadn’t finished enough education,” Rosenthal explained. “And unfortunately at this point, those people are unable to apply for DACA.” California’s “sanctuary state” laws prevent local authorities from handing over immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unless the people have been convicted of a serious felony. Employers also are forbidden to grant access to their workplace or to employee

By Desert Star Staff DENVER – The Colorado House Local Government Committee on Wednesday is set to decide the fate of the “Right to Rest Act.” House Bill 1067 would roll back local laws that make it illegal to sit or sleep in public spaces. Terese Howard, an organizer with the group Denver Homeless Out Loud, says all people, regardless of their economic or social status, have the right to exist in public places without fear. “This bill would stop the

inhumane, ineffective and unconstitutional practices of ticketing, harassing and arresting people who are sleeping, sitting down, basic acts of survival,” she states. Colorado communities have passed more than 350 ordinances that make it illegal for people to ask for charity, sleep or rest on a public bench or even in their own, parked car. Similar bills have died in the past three legislative sessions. Opponents maintain the policies are necessary to move people off the

(Mani Albrecht/Wikimedia Commons) records without a warrant. The feds are suing over the issue, but Sally Kinoshita with the Immigrant Legal Resource Center is convinced the laws are constitutional. “There’s nothing in federal law that mandates that states or localities use their own resources to aid federal immigration agents to arrest people or identifying people,” said Kinoshita, ILRC

deputy director. “The federal government cannot require the state to participate in a federal deportation program.” And Hector Salvador with the California Labor Federation in Los Angeles is organizing rapid-response networks, sending teams of supporters to workplaces during raids. “Though there is fear and a lot of anxiety because of all these increased levels of

ICE raids and threats from this administration, there are groups of immigrants and allies that are fighting back,” said Salvador. Immigrant-rights groups are calling on voters to register their opinions at the ballot box in this fall’s midterm elections, in hopes of voting in a new Congress that could be more amenable to the plight of immigrants.

streets and into shelters. Howard says when police force people to move, they actually end up going farther away from shelters, and that makes it harder for outreach workers to find them. She says the solution to ending homelessness is to invest more tax dollars in affordable housing, not spend money incarcerating people for sitting or sleeping. “The theory that these ordinances help connect people to services is completely unfounded, and in fact it’s the exact opposite,” she states. “It

makes it harder for folks to get into housing, get into services and get their lives together.” Howard adds that many Coloradans are only a divorce or job loss away from experiencing homelessness. According to the Economic Policy Institute, a single adult

in Denver needs to earn more than $41,000 a year, or nearly double the current minimum wage, just to meet basic needs such as housing. A single parent with one child has to earn $72,000 dollars to get by in Pueblo, and $59,000 in Grand Junction.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause Desert Town Hall presented by The H. N. , and Frances C. Berger Foundation presented its Speakers Series with Caroline Kennedy, Daughter of President John F. Kennedy. The Desert Townhall always includes a session with teenaged students from all the area high schools. Usually, about 150 teens are given the opportunity to hear the speaker and ask questions. Kids are very into politics

and ask some fascinating and informed questions. She did tell the kids that she would only answer specific questions about her life and job as an ambassador to Japan. She didn’t want gun control questions. She spoke candidly after each question stating they were excellent questions. She smiled a lot at the children. One of the young boys was so shy asking his matter that she told him he was doing fine and

continuing. Caroline Kennedy had requested poems by the teens, and he had written one he wanted to read to her. His poetry was moving and brought a standing ovation from everyone in the room. Probably the highlight of the event. About a dozen young teens got to ask a question before time ran out. Before the Q&A with Caroline Kennedy, the winner of the poetry contest was announced. The judge

was a renown poetess, Jill Alexander Essbaum, who spoke to the children about poetry and what it means in their education. There is usually a speaker before the main Townhall speaker arrives. These speakers are essential as they provide more educational topics for the teens. The winner of the Poetry Contest was JahJaira Telles who arrived with her mother, Araceli Ciriaco. Telles was

interviewed on KMIR news and showed her intelligence at such a young age. The event lasts for about an hour. The teens are then offered a buffet dinner. These teens are called Youth Ambassadors. One Youth Ambassador, Justin Wickstrand, had the honor of introducing Caroline Kennedy to the stage and you could see how excited he was. These speakers offer life-changing ideas for today’s youth.

‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri!’ Now on DVD Actress Frances McDormand took home the coveted Oscar in 1997 for her portrayal of a feisty lady sheriff in “Fargo.” This year she won another golden statuette for her brilliant performance as Mildred Hayes, a grieving mother whose daughter was raped and murdered. Months have passed, and the killer has not been brought to justice. In desperation, she scrapes up enough money to rent three billboards just outside of Ebbing. In bright red letters she has them inscribed: “Raped While Dying.” “And Still No Arrests?” “How Come, Chief Willoughby?” Supporting Actor nominee, Woody Harrelson, plays Chief Willoughby. A compassionate man, he comes to Mildred, assuring her that everything has been done to find the rapist-killer. She acknowledges he is a good man but till the murderer is arrested her billboards will remain standing.

This accusation upsets the townspeople, even though they sympathize with Mildred’s pain. Sam Rockwell garnered the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal as Officer Dixon, the chief’s right-hand man. Dixon is a hot-headed racist who still lives at home with his Mama. But he is devoted to his job and the Chief. He is determined to take down the billboards if Mildred will not. Adding to Mildred’s anger and distress is the fact that her ex-husband (John Hawkes) is dating a sweet, but genuinely dense girl (Samara Weaving) young enough to be his daughter. Many other exciting characters are living in this small town, like James (Peter Dinklage) who describes himself as “...a midget who sells used cars and has a drinking problem.” He’s a pleasant guy who has a crush on Mildred. And there’s

Mildred’s teenaged son, Robbie (Lucas Hedges) who is being ignored at home and embarrassed at school by his mother’s actions and fixation on her daughter’s murder. The film takes many twists and turns, but in the end, all the story threads

intertwine in this compelling tale about small-town life in a place called Ebbing. The film was written and directed by Martin McDonagh, who also penned the quirky, smart play “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” which was performed in L.A. at the Mark

Hotel Paseo Opens Its Doors

KMIR Lauren Day Palm Desert, CA - After months of construction, the luxury Hotel Paseo opened its

doors on Monday. “We are a 150 room, life-style and luxury hotel right in the heart of the El Paseo shopping district. We

have nine specialty suites, a seven-treatment room spa,” said Gil Reyes, the general manager of Hotel Paseo.

The billiard suites come with a personal pool table and record player. The fourstar Hotel Paseo also offers a trailer guests can stay in. “When you’re walking around it’s like, ‘Woah, that’s pretty neat,’” Reyes explained. Eliot Raymond was one of the first guests to stay overnight at Hotel Paseo. He said he was impressed with the amenities. “It is very nice having beautiful views out here, and having the whole back yard out here is just gorgeous,” Raymond said. The mayor of Palm Desert, Sabby Johnathan, said this is a chance for other businesses along El Paseo to thrive. “The vacancies, we’ve now determined are around 11%, which is not bad, but we want to improve on that. as we see new businesses, especially ones that add to the whole mix of El Paseo, and there’s others planned. We are trending in a very good direction,” he said about the grand opening of Hotel Paseo. Deborah Quinn is the owner of Fix on El Paseo. Quinn said many businesses owners have been waiting a long time for Hotel Paseo to open. She said she expects Hotel Paseo to draw more foot traffic to the area. “I was told that the hotel should be booked for summer time as opposed to just winter time, so I think that will be a big boost for us,” she said. Hotel Paseo is also a boost for jobs. “98% of our staff is from the Coachella valley, and it was important for us to incorporate that into our day to day,” Reyes said. Source: KMIR

President Trump to Make First California Visit KMIR Vince Marino San Diego, CA - President Trump will make his first visit to California Tuesday since he took office. People in San Diego have already begun protesting and more protests are on the way. “When someone such as Trump comes to our communities promoting hateful, spiteful and violent policies we have to demonstrate our www.desertstarweekly.com

unity,” said a protester. “I think this is the most divisive president we have ever had in my lifetime. He’s not trying to build bridges. He trying to build walls,” said a retired woman who attended Monday’s protest. Trump is planning to personally inspect eight border wall prototypes. While protesters plan to continue their demonstrations on Tuesday, Trump supporters

here in the Coachella Valley say they welcome the president with open arms. “He knows about construction. He knows about building things. And I think he’s going to be in the right place at the right time,” said Trump supporter Ed Yoe. The president is scheduled to make a stop at Miramar Air Station where he will speak to all five branches of the military and will wrap March 16, 2018

up his visit with a campaign fundraiser in Beverly Hills. “I’m all for him. I don’t think he’s a democrat. I don’t think he’s a republican. I think he’s a businessman who does whatever he wants and it’s freaking out the world. And I think that’s great,” said Yoe. “Trump, do understand that your wall is not going to be built because we are going to fight, and we are going to do whatever it takes

to ensure that it doesn’t get built,” said a protester at Tuesday’s demonstration. The president has long criticized the state for its sanctuary status and his visit comes only a week after the Justice Department announced it is suing the state of California for not following federal immigration laws. Terrific “Sister Act” Musical On Stage At Palm Canyon Theatre By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic Member American Theatre Critics Association When it comes to big, glamourous, gorgeously costumed, musical productions in the Coachella Valley, then we’re definitely talking about the Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) of Palm Springs. They have more than twenty years of experience and know-how in producing all forms of theatre, but specialize in Musical Theatre productions. Depending on how long you’ve been a patron of the theatre there have been many memorable productions over the years. Beginning with their first production “The Desert Song”, 21 years ago, to their current production “Sister Act” the musical, there have been many audience favorites such as: “Man of La Mancha”, “Jekyll and Hyde”, “Cats”, “Les Miz”, “In the Heights”, “Evita”, “West Side Story”, “Hello Dolly” and “Young Frankenstein”. My apologies to all if I’ve omitted your favorite Palm Canyon musical. I left out quite a few of my favorites as well. Which brings us to the current PCT production “Sister Act” the Musical that owes its theatrical existence to the movie “Sister Act”, starring Whoopy Goldberg. Popularity begets popularity. The movie was then turned into a musical

written by Alan Menken and Glen Slater, from a libretto by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner, with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane. The result is a musical Blockbuster which I believe is one of the best musicals ever produced by the Palm Canyon Theatre. Wonderfully staged by Robbie Wayne, who also choreographs and performs as an actor in this high energy musical production that features a cast of thirty performers led by a theatrical force of nature - actor, singer, performer, and star - Nicole Tillman. And, boy can she sing and belt her numbers. Ms Tillman was last seen at PCT in “Avenue Q”; we hope it won’t be her last production at PCT. She brings to her performance of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, such energy and talent; including the sass and self-assurance that’s required to fuel and drive this disco beat production. Despite her brassy, breezy, ‘take charge’ way, we see her vulnerability and her softer, empathetic, side as well. She’s a character we care about and actively root for. If an audience fails to root for the protagonist, or even the anti-hero, in a stage or movie, then that’s a ‘problem’ production. Audiences need to pull for someone, if not

on their toes thanks to stage manager Rob Weidert, where if glitches occur the audience will be none the wiser. Enough cannot be said about the gorgeous costume designs of resident designer Derik Shopinski, and his costume design assistants: Kathy Ferguson, Virginia Sulick, Colleen Walker, Mat Tucker, Katie Fleishman, and Lisa Goldberg. All of the costumes glitter and sparkle. And the nuns’ costumes are primly appropriate for a group of singing and dancing nuns. Musical plot lines are usually simple with some stretching plausibility a bit, but in general, the music and lyrics, usually smooth over any bumps in the story plotline. In “Sister Act”, the comedy story and plot can be boiled down to a case of a disco diva (Ms. Tillman) on the run from her gangster boyfriend and his thugs, finds herself in a police witness protection program in a convent… don’t rationalize, just go with flow and enjoy. The characters and the performers in this splendid musical certainly are. It’s a hilarious, entertaining ride courtesy of a group of committed and dedicated performers. There isn’t space to list all of the cast, however, there are always standouts

and this stellar production is no exception. Amanda Burr as Mother Superior, Elizabeth Schmelling as Sister Mary Robert, Morgana Corelli as Sister Mary Lazarus, and Jasmine Shaffer as Sister Mary Patrick, score vocally as well as in their acting scenes. The convent scenes are highly entertaining. Who knew nuns could be so entertaining and funny? Not to be outdone by the ladies in the production, fine performance come from Tenor Ben Reece as a helpful Police Officer Eddie Souther, Anthony Nannini, a wonderful dancer and comedian, plays TJ one of Curtis Jackson’s thugs, and Terry Huber as Monsignor O’Hara, perform the heavy comedy lifting on the Men’s side. In the music department, “Sister Act” benefits from the talents of the accompanying orchestra led by music director Jaci Davis on piano, David Bronson, on drums, Daniel Gutierrez, 2nd Keyboard, and Larry Holloway on Bass. “Sister Act”, the musical, performs at the Palm Canyon Theatre Thursdays through Sundays through March 25, 2018. For reservations and ticket information call the box office at 760-323-5123.
