Over 10 Feet of Snow

March 15, 2023 – Mother

Nature has tremendously benefited Big Bear this winter season. Big Bear has received over 14 feet of natural snowfall this winter, including more than 10 feet of fresh snow from the most

recent mega snowstorms. In addition, this season’s multiple winter storms and Big Bear Snow Play’s snowmaking efforts have amassed over 20 feet of snow at Southern California’s largest snow-tubing park. These ideal conditions make it the preferred location

for families to get away this spring break. Several Southern California school districts begin spring break in late March and early April. Big Bear Snow Play’s tubing hills make it an easy choice for parents seeking a fun-filled spring break escape with their kids.

Big Bear Snow Play is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and anticipates staying open through Easter weekend in April. In addition, big Bear Snow Play will expand its glow-tubing night sessions to remain open daily from Friday, March 24 to April 8, from 5 p.m. to 9

p.m. (weather permitting).

“We have tons and tons of snow right now, which will make for great fun during spring break,” said Big Bear Snow Play General Manager Kim Voigt. “When the kids are off school for a week,

Riverside County Advances More Affordable Housing

RIVERSIDE – The Riverside County Board of Supervisors today

unanimously approved a funding allocation of $1.3 million towards creating 108 new affordable apartments in the City of Coachella.

The funding will go to Chelsea Investment Corporation for the Tripoli Affordable Housing Project located in Coachella. The Tripoli Apartments will add 108 apartments on approximately 2.8 acres of vacant land at 51392 Cesar Chavez St.

The $1.3 million commitment by the county, which comes from the county’s HOME funds, is in addition to $1 million that the county approved

last year, also from HOME funds. As a result, Riverside County is contributing $2.3 million in funding support for this future housing.

“Riverside County is a partner in the development of affordable housing developments such as the future Tripoli Apartments and many others,” said Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. “When Riverside County commits these funds, it helps secure the other funding needed to make these happen and build housing for residents and our communities. Affordable housing is needed when people are homeless, when individuals and families struggle to afford rent, and when people live in unsafe

3 Ways Parents Can Encourage Social-Emotional Learning

Consider these three ways parents can encourage social and emotional learning in their children:

Most parents would agree that the quality of their children’s education is crucial to their overall development. However, while parents are optimistic about the future of education, they also recognize that children have educational

needs beyond what is considered the standard.

A Harris Poll survey on behalf of KinderCare found that 83% of parents believe it’s essential for children to be raised with socialemotional skills, 84% think it’s important for children

to learn to treat others the way they want to be treated, and 83% believe kindness should be a core value in the way children are educated. Now, parents want a focus on social-emotional skills, mental health, kindness, and understanding differences.

1. Practice Emotional Literacy at Home: Disagreements among parents and siblings are almost inevitable at home. While this can seem challenging to handle, it can serve as an opportunity for children to practice emotional literacy by identifying their feelings and the feelings of others. It also allows children to practice their listening skills and put themselves in the other person’s shoes. Using these skills, children can develop a more vital empathy and understand how their emotions drive their actions.

2. Practice Mindfulness with a Relaxing Activity: Mindfulness can help children understand and regulate their emotions, especially when it becomes a regular

habit. Parents can instill this habit in their kids by picking a set time to do activities in a calm space at home every day, such as reading a book, listening to calm music, or something as simple as deep breathing.

3. Provide Unplugged Opportunities to Connect with Other Children: Activities that don’t revolve around a screen and encourage inperson socialization with peers can allow children to practice building their social-emotional skills. For example, programs like KinderCare’s Champ Camp include indoor and outdoor group activities and field trips designed to help children use their natural creativity and curiosity to learn and develop critical social skills. CA’s Unpaid Caregivers Contribute 4 Billion Hours

According to a new report, some 4.4 million family caregivers in California provide more than four billion hours of uncompensated care each year, work worth about $81 billion.

Researchers from AARP also found that those unpaid contributions have increased by $18 billion since 2019.

Donna Benton, research associate professor in

the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California, said caregivers dedicate, on average, more than 18 hours a week.

“None of us anticipate how difficult it can be to work with medications, physicians and nurses -- and appointments and transportation -- and fighting social services, and understanding limited

income,” Benton outlined.

California has a network of 11 taxpayer-funded Caregiver Resource Centers to ease the burden of legal services, case management, family consultation, and education programs. In addition, groups like AARP and the California Coalition on Family Caregiving advocate for the state’s caregivers in Sacramento. California lawmakers are

considering two bills to improve the state’s paid family leave program. Assembly Bill 518 would allow family-of-choice caregivers, not just relatives, to take job-protected, paid time off to care for a loved one.

Benton noted it is essential for members of the LGBTQ community, who may not have children or other immediate relatives, to care for them.

“And you would want them

to be there to care to help you, but they can’t because the law doesn’t allow that,” Benton explained. “We must have more choices because family structures are different. But the best care is provided by somebody who knows you and wants to be there for you.”

Advocates are also pressing for the passage of state Senate Bill 616, expanding paid sick leave from three days to seven.

go to Big Bear to play in the snow. I’m sure kids and their parents will agree that snow tubing gets straight A’s across the board!”

Big Bear Snow Play grooms its eight runs nightly to maintain optimum sliding conditions, just like ski resorts. The groomed snow creates an evenly spread corduroy surface for downhill fun. However, one of the most excellent perks that the snow-

tubing park provides is two Magic Carpet uphill lifts. These large, moving conveyor-belt transporters give easy access to the top of the slopes.

Big Bear Snow Play is open daily for snow tubing from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and is projected to remain open through Easter weekend in April. Glow Tubing is every Friday and Saturday night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Glow Tubing hours of operation, however, will remain open each night during the height

funding to advance future housing, including:

$6.7 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding for the Palm Villas at Millennium Housing Project in Palm Desert. Palm Villas is a two-phase, 241-apartment community in the City of Palm Desert, located on Gerald Ford Drive between

Cook Street and Dinah Shore Drive, and will be built by Palm Communities.

$2 million for the Avenue 44 Apartments Housing Project in Indio, funded by the county’s Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA). This housing community will bring about 180 apartments at Avenue 44 and Golf Center

Parkway in the City of Indio and will be built by Pacific West Communities, Inc.

The county also accepted an additional $5.5 million for the Palm Springs Navigation Campus, which will provide 80 housing units and wraparound services as a comprehensive approach to address homelessness.

of spring break, March 24 to April 8 (weather permitting). Big Bear Ropes Course, an aerial adventure with over 30 obstacles, is another thrilling attraction on site. Big Bear Snow Play is located at 42825 Big Bear Blvd. (three miles east of Big Bear Village, next to Motel 6). 6 tips for promoting pet health

FAMILY FEATURES

When four-legged friends are feeling under the weather, pet parents may feel helpless pinpointing exactly what’s wrong. Nurturing your pet’s gut health is one way to protect his or her immune system and to promote overall well-being.

Improve your pooch’s gut health with these tips from the pet experts at Solid Gold:

Recognize the Signs of a Potential Gut Health Problem

While many problems are readily apparent, gut health isn’t one of them. There may be some tell-tale signs like diarrhea or vomiting, but other symptoms like bloating or constipation may be harder to spot. Other signs of gut trouble might include fatigue, frequent licking, restlessness, changes in coat quality and luster, and weight fluctuations. Be sure to talk with your vet promptly if you observe any concerning symptoms.

Pay Attention to Ingredients

Choose a dog food with ingredients that promote gut health. For example, Solid Gold’s Hund-N-Flocken dog food is powered by NutrientBoost, a proprietary blend of ingredients packed with protein and nutrients that help canines thrive. It features crave-worthy taste and ingredients like amino acids, probiotics and proteins that support digestion, immunity and nutrient absorption. Each bite is made with a blend of high-fiber ingredients such as carrot, pumpkin and pearled barley to support digestive health.

Be Conscious of Allergens and Food Intolerance

Dogs can experience allergies just like people. Allergies that affect a dog’s skin are common, but you might also find your dog has trouble digesting certain foods, which can create inflammation and irritation in the gut. Allergy testing or an elimination diet (removing one potential allergen source at a time) can help pinpoint the problem.

Feed Probiotics to Promote Good Bacteria

Just like humans, dogs need a well-balanced microbiome. Probiotics build the microflora in your dog’s system, promoting the good bacteria that wages war on infections and harmful bacteria when needed. Probiotics can be especially helpful if your dog is prone to diarrhea or gas, or if he or she has recently received an antibiotic treatment that may have affected the natural gut flora. You can find probiotics in the form of food or supplements like Solid Gold’s Mellow Belly Gut Health Supplement, which is made with a powerful combination of natural digestive enzymes and probiotics to aid in proper digestion. The entire collection of food and supplements are made with superfoods and probiotics to help support your pet’s immunity and get the most out of every day to keep him or her thriving.

Don’t Forget the Prebiotics

Many people are at least somewhat familiar with the role probiotics play in gut health, but not everyone knows about prebiotics. Prebiotics, which are a form of dietary fiber, function as a fertilizer or food source for probiotics, allowing helpful bacteria to multiply. Look for prebiotic treats, capsules, drops, powder and even specially formulated foods.

Manage Stress with Play and Exercise

If you’ve ever experienced digestive issues as a result of stress, you know mental and physical health go hand in hand. The same is true for dogs, so managing your dog’s stress level is an important step in helping regulate his or her gut health. Exercise is beneficial for your pet’s health in a variety of ways, including suppressing cortisol, which is an inflammatory hormone that may weaken the immune system.
